A hybrid wave energy conversion (WEC) system, integrating a backward bent duct buoy (BBDB) with an oscillating buoy (OB) via a flexible mooring chain, is introduced in this study. Unlike existing hybrid WECs, the proposed system dispenses with rigid mechanical linkages and enables flexible offshore deployment. Flared BBDB and buoy models with spherical, cylindrical, and semi-capsule shapes are designed and tested experimentally in a wave flume using both regular and irregular wave conditions. The effects of nozzle ratio (NR), coupling distance, buoy draft, and buoy geometry are systematically examined to investigate the hydrodynamic performance and energy conversion characteristics. It is found that NR at 110 under unidirectional airflow produces an optimal balance between pressure response, free surface displacement, and energy conversion efficiency. Energy extraction is significantly influenced by the coupling distance, with the hybrid system achieving maximum performance at a specific normalized spacing. The semi-capsule buoy improves power extraction ability and expands effective bandwidth due to asymmetric shape and coupled motion. These findings provide valuable insights into the coupling mechanism and geometric optimization for hybrid WECs. Full article

This study investigates a novel heat pipe integrated cooling system designed for thermal management of Tesla’s 4680 cylindrical lithium–ion batteries in electric vehicles (EVs). Through a comprehensive approach combining experimental analysis, 1-D AMESim simulations, and 3-D Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) modeling, the thermal performance of various wick structures and working fluid filling ratios was evaluated. The experimental setup utilized a triangular prism chamber housing three surrogate heater blocks to replicate the heat generation of 4680 cells under 1C, 2C, and 3C discharge rates. Results demonstrated that a blended fabric wick with a crown-shaped design (Wick 5) at a 30–40% filling ratio achieved the lowest maximum temperature (Tmax of 47.0°C), minimal surface temperature deviation (ΔTsurface of 2.8°C), and optimal thermal resistance (Rth of 0.27°C/W) under 85 W heat input. CFD simulations validated experimental findings, confirming stable evaporation–condensation circulation at a 40% filling ratio, while identifying thermal limits at high heat loads (155 W). The proposed hybrid battery thermal management system (BTMS) offers significant potential for enhancing the performance and safety of high-energy density EV batteries. This research provides a foundation for optimizing thermal management in next-generation electric vehicles. Full article

This study proposes a coupled constitutive model that captures the anisotropic failure characteristics and damage evolution of nickel-based single-crystal (SX) superalloys under various temperature conditions. The model accounts for both creep rate and material damage evolution, enabling accurate prediction of the typical three-stage creep curves, macroscopic fracture morphologies, and microstructural features under uniaxial tensile creep for specimens with different crystallographic orientations. Creep behavior of SX superalloys was simulated under multiple orientations and various temperature-stress conditions using the proposed model. The resulting creep curves aligned well with experimental observations, thereby validating the model’s feasibility and accuracy. Furthermore, a finite element model of cylindrical specimens was established, and simulations of the macroscopic fracture morphology were performed using a user-defined material subroutine. By integrating the rafting theory governed by interfacial energy density, the model successfully predicts the rafting morphology of the microstructure at the fracture surface for different crystallographic orientations. The proposed model maintains low programming complexity and computational cost while effectively predicting the creep life and deformation behavior of anisotropic materials. The model accurately captures the three-stage creep deformation behavior of SX specimens and provides reliable predictions of stress fields and microstructural changes at critical cross-sections. The model demonstrates high accuracy in life prediction, with all predicted results falling within a ±1.5× error band and an average error of 14.6%. Full article

In this study, a novel direct laser beam turning (DLBT) approach is proposed for the precision machining of AISI 308L austenitic stainless steel, which eliminates the need for cutting tools and thereby eradicates tool wear and vibration-induced surface irregularities. A nanosecond-pulsed Nd:YAG fiber laser (λ = 1064 nm, spot size = 0.05 mm) was used, and Ø1.6 mm × 20 mm cylindrical rods were processed under ambient conditions without auxiliary cooling. The experimental framework systematically evaluated the influence of scanning speed, pulse frequency, and the number of laser passes on dimensional accuracy and material removal efficiency. The results indicate that a maximum diameter reduction of 0.271 mm was achieved at a scanning speed of 3200 mm/s and 50 kHz, whereas 0.195 mm was attained at 6400 mm/s and 200 kHz. A robust second-order polynomial correlation (R2 = 0.99) was established between diameter reduction and the number of passes, revealing the high predictability of the process. Crucially, when the scanning speed was doubled, the effective fluence was halved, considerably influencing the ablation characteristics. Despite the low fluence, evidence of material evaporation at elevated frequencies due to the incubation effect underscores the complex photothermal dynamics governing the process. This work constitutes the first comprehensive quantification of pass-dependent diameter modulation in DLBT and introduces a transformative, noncontact micromachining strategy for hard-to-machine alloys. The demonstrated precision, repeatability, and thermal control position DLBT as a promising candidate for next-generation manufacturing of high-performance miniaturized components. Full article

This study presents the first investigation into the application of ultrasonic vibration-assisted electrical discharge machining (UV-EDM) using graphite electrodes for external cylindrical surface machining—an essential surface in the production of tablet punches and sheet metal-forming dies. A custom ultrasonic horn was designed and fabricated using 90CrSi material to operate effectively at a resonant frequency of 20 kHz, ensuring stable vibration transmission throughout the machining process. A Box–Behnken experimental design was employed to explore the effects of five process parameters—vibration amplitude (A), pulse-on time (Ton), pulse-off time (Toff), discharge current (Ip), and servo voltage (SV)—on two key performance indicators: material removal rate (MRR) and surface roughness (Ra). The optimization process was conducted in two stages: single-objective analysis to maximize MRR while ensuring Ra < 4 µm, followed by a hybrid multi-objective approach combining NSGA-II and the Analytic Hierarchy Process (AHP). The optimal solution achieved a high MRR of 9.28 g/h while maintaining Ra below the critical surface finish threshold, thus meeting the practical requirements for punch surface quality. The findings confirm the effectiveness of the proposed horn design and hybrid optimization strategy, offering a new direction for enhancing productivity and surface integrity in cylindrical EDM applications using graphite electrodes. In the rapidly evolving fields of materials science, catalysis, electronics, drug delivery, and environmental remediation, the development of effective substrates for molecular deposition has become increasingly crucial. Ordered mesoporous silica materials have garnered significant attention due to their unique structural properties and exceptional potential as substrates for molecular immobilization across these diverse applications. This study compares three mesoporous silica powders: MCM-41, SBA-15, and SBA-16. A multi-technique characterization approach was employed, utilizing low- and wide-angle X-ray diffraction (XRD), nitrogen physisorption, and transmission electron microscopy (TEM) to elucidate the structure–property relationships of these materials. XRD analysis confirmed the amorphous nature of silica frameworks and revealed distinct pore symmetries: a two-dimensional hexagonal (P6mm) structure for MCM-41 and SBA-15, and three-dimensional cubic (Im3¯m) structure for SBA-16. Nitrogen sorption measurements demonstrated significant variations in textural properties, with MCM-41 exhibiting uniform cylindrical mesopores and the highest surface area, SBA-15 displaying hierarchical meso- and microporosity confirmed by NLDFT analysis, and SBA-16 showing a complex 3D interconnected cage-like structure with broad pore size distribution. TEM imaging provided direct visualization of particle morphology and internal pore architecture, enabling estimation of lattice parameters and identification of structural gradients within individual particles. The integration of these complementary techniques proved essential for comprehensive material characterization, particularly for MCM-41, where its small particle size (45–75 nm) contributed to apparent structural inconsistencies between XRD and sorption data. This integrated analytical approach provides valuable insights into the fundamental structure–property relationships governing ordered mesoporous silica materials and demonstrates the necessity of combined characterization strategies for accurate structural determination. Ice accumulation on exposed surfaces presents substantial economic and safety challenges across various industries. To overcome limitations associated with traditional anti-icing methods, such as the use of nanoparticles, this study introduces a novel and facile approach for fabricating superhydrophobic and anti-icing microstructures using cost-effective LCD 3D printing technology. The influence of diverse pillar geometries, including square, cylindrical, hexagonal, and truncated conical forms, was analyzed to assess their effects on the hydrophobic and anti-icing/icephobic performance in terms of wettability, ice adhesion strength, and icing delay time. The role of microstructure topography was further investigated through cylindrical patterns with varying geometric parameters to identify optimal designs for enhancing hydrophobic and icephobic characteristics. Furthermore, the effectiveness of surface functionalization using a low surface energy material was evaluated. Our findings demonstrate that the synergistic combination of tailored microscale geometries and surface functionalization significantly enhances anti-icing performance with reliable repeatability, achieving ice adhesion of 13.9 and 17.9 kPa for square and cylindrical pillars, respectively. Critically, this nanoparticle-free 3D printing and low surface energy treatment method offers a scalable and efficient route for producing high-performance hydrophobic/icephobic surfaces, opening promising avenues for applications in sectors where robust anti-icing capabilities are crucial, such as renewable energy and transportation. Wave deformation and sediment transport nearest the shoreside are among the main reasons for sand erosion and beach profile changes. In particular, identifying the areas of incident-wave breaking and longshore current generation parallel to the shoreline is important for understanding the morphological changes of coastal beaches. In this study, a two-phase incompressible flow model along with a sandy sloping topography was employed to investigate the wave deformation and longshore current generation areas in a circular wave basin model. The finite volume method (FVM) was implemented to discretize the governing equations in cylindrical coordinates, the volume-of-fluid method (VOF) was adopted to differentiate the air–water interfaces in the control cells, and the zonal embedded grid technique was employed for grid generation in the cylindrical computational domain. The water surface elevations and velocity profiles were measured in different wave conditions, and the measurements showed that the maximum water levels per wave were high and varied between cases, as well as between cross-sections in a single case. Additionally, the mean water levels were lower in the adjacent positions of the approximated wave-breaking zones. The wave-breaking positions varied between cross-sections in a single case, with the incident-wave height, mean water level, and wave-breaking position measurements indicating the influence of downstream flow variation in each cross-section on the sloping topography. The cross-shore velocity profiles became relatively stable over time, while the longshore velocity profiles predominantly moved in the alongshore direction, with smaller fluctuations, particularly during the same time period and in measurement positions near the wave-breaking zone. The computed velocity profiles also varied between cross-sections, and for the velocity profiles along the cross-shore and longshore directions nearest the wave-breaking areas where the downstream flow had minimal influence, it was presumed that there was longshore-current generation in the sloping topography nearest the shoreside. The computed results were compared with the experimental results and we observed similar characteristics for wave profiles in the same wave period case in both models. In the future, further investigations can be conducted using the presented circular wave basin model to investigate the oblique wave deformation and longshore current generation in different sloping and wave conditions. To meet the growing demand for space launches and overcome the limitations of land-based launches, the scientific research community is committed to developing safer and more flexible offshore rocket launch technologies. Their core carriers—marine platforms—are directly exposed to the dynamic and variable marine environment. The complex coupling effects of wind, waves, and currents impose severe challenges upon these platforms, causing complex phenomena such as severe rocking. These phenomena pose severe threats to and significantly interfere with the stability and normal execution of offshore rocket launch operations. This study employs CFD simulation software to analyze liquid sloshing within a cylindrical tank, both with and without baffles. Following validation of the natural frequency, the analysis focuses on the suppression effect of different baffle positions and configurations on tank sloshing. The numerical simulation results indicate the following: Incorporating baffles alters the natural frequency of liquid sloshing within the tank and effectively suppresses the free surface motion. The suppression of the wave surface motion improves as the baffle is positioned closer to the free surface and as the number of perforations in the baffle increases. However, when the number of perforations exceeds a certain threshold, further increasing it yields negligible improvement in the suppression of the sloshing wave surface motion. Full article

Traditional approaches in tunnel lighting have been directed toward the installation of appropriate luminaires in the intermediate and transitional sections with the simple objective of diminishing the effect of delayed visual accommodation during daylight hours. Such efforts run in parallel with the target of keeping the huge electrical use at the lowest level. Nevertheless, inadequate attention has been conceded to the interior areas, whose noticeable longitude in several instances, and subsequently the duration of occupancy of the users, can produce discomfort in the majority of the tunnel or underground passageway. It is in this region where the flicker effect presents a more remarkable impact. Although such effect is in fact uncomfortable, the strategies to eliminate it efficiently have not been developed in depth and the result is still deserving, especially in terms of sustainability. The reasons for this neglect, as well as some particularities and solutions, are exposed and discussed in the present article. Specifically, it is proved that the use of sunlight can be an adequate initiative and a positive energy input into design and retrofit tunnels capable of hampering or totally avoiding such unwanted effect. The innovative tunnel geometry explained in this manuscript is not cylindrical, and it is not based in revolution forms. Thus, it prevents the appearance of such unnerving visual effects, which compromise sustainability and endanger security. We are in the position to explain how the vector field generated by the normal to the points of the novel surface displayed remains non-parallel, ensuring appropriate diffusivity and, consequently, an even distribution of radiated energy. In the same manner, the notion of the tunnel is extended from a linear system to a veritable network of galleries, which can traverse in space bi- or even three-dimensionally. Accordingly, we will offer diverse instances of junctions and splices that further enhance the permeability into the terrain, augmenting the resilience capabilities of this disruptive technology. With all the former, a net reduction of costs reaching 25% can be easily expected with revenues. Full article

Fused Filament Fabrication (FFF) enables the manufacturing of complex polymer components. However, surface finish and dimensional accuracy remain key limitations for their integration into functional assemblies. This study explores the potential of conventional turning as a post-processing strategy to improve the geometric and surface quality of PLA reinforced with carbon fiber (CF) parts produced by FFF. Machinability was evaluated through the analysis of cutting forces, thermal behavior, energy consumption, and surface integrity under varying cutting speeds, feed rates, and specimen slenderness. The results indicate that feed is the most influential parameter across all performance metrics, with lower values leading to improved dimensional accuracy and surface finish, achieving the most significant reductions of 63% in surface roughness (Sa) and 62% in cylindricity deviation. Nevertheless, the surface roughness is higher than that of metals, and deviations in geometry along the length of the specimen have been observed. A critical shear stress of 0.237 MPa has been identified as the limit for interlayer failure, defining the boundary conditions for viable cutting operation. The incorporation of CNC turning as a post-processing step reduced the total fabrication time by approximately 83% compared with high-resolution FFF, while maintaining dimensional accuracy and enhancing surface quality. These findings support the use of machining operations as a viable and efficient post-processing method for improving the functionality of polymer-based components produced by additive manufacturing. The precursors used were tetraethyl orthosilicate, aluminum nitrate, and zirconium, and polyvinylpyrrolidone was added to electrospun nonwoven fibrous membranes. The membranes were sintered, decorated with silver nanoparticles. The enhancement substrates were made of fibers of cylindric morphology with an average diameter of approximately 190 nm, a smooth surface, and 9 nm spherical particles decorating the surface of the fibers. The enhancement capacity of the substrates was tested using pyridine, methyl orange, methylene blue, crystal violet, and Eriochrome black T at different concentrations with Raman spectroscopy to determine whether the size and complexity of the analyte has an impact on the enhancement capacity. Enhancement factors of 2.53 × 102, 3.06 × 101, 2.97 × 103, 4.66 × 103, and 1.45 × 103 times were obtained for the signal of pyridine, methyl orange, methylene blue, crystal violet, and Eriochrome black T at concentrations of 1 nM. An analysis of the working surfaces of cylindrical gears after scuffing shock tests allowed for the assessment of the effect of loading conditions on the form of damage to the tooth surfaces. Unlike the method of scuffing under severe conditions, where loading is applied gradually, the presented tests employed direct maximum loading—shock loading—without prior lapping of the gears under lower loads. This loading method significantly increases the vulnerability of the analyzed components to scuffing, enabling an evaluation of their limit in terms of operational properties. To identify the changes and the types of the teeth’s working surface damage, the following microscopy techniques were applied: scanning electron microscopy (FE-SEM) with EDS microanalyzer, optical interferential profilometry (WLI), atomic force microscope (AFM), and optical microscopy. The results allowed us to define the characteristic damage mechanisms and assess the efficiency of the applied DLC coatings when it comes to resistance to scuffing in shock scuffing conditions. Tribological tests were performed by means of an FZG T-12U gear test rig in a power circulating system to test cylindrical gear scuffing. The gears were made from 18CrNiMo7-6 steel and 35CrMnSiA nano-bainitic steel and coated with W-DLC/CrN. Full article

This study presents a multi-objective optimization framework for designing cylindrical triply periodic minimal surface (TPMS) lattices tailored for bone implant applications. Using an artificial neural network (ANN) as a surrogate model trained on simulated data, four key properties—ultimate stress (U), energy absorption (EA), surface area-to-volume ratio (SA/VR), and relative density (RD)—were predicted from seven lattice design parameters. To address anatomical variability, a novel implant size-based categorization (small, medium, and large) was introduced, and separate optimization runs were conducted for each group. The optimization was performed via the NSGA-II algorithm to maximize mechanical performance (U and EA) and surface efficiency (SA/VR), while filtering for biologically relevant RD values (20–40%). Separate optimization runs were conducted for small, medium, and large implant size groups. A total of 105 Pareto-optimal designs were identified, with 75 designs retained after RD filtering. SHapley Additive exPlanations (SHAP) analysis revealed the dominant influence of thickness and unit cell size on target properties. Kernel density and boxplot comparisons confirmed distinct performance trends across size groups. The framework effectively balances competing design goals and enables the selection of size-specific lattices. The proposed approach provides a reproducible pathway for optimizing bioarchitectures, with the potential to accelerate the development of lattice-based implants in personalized medicine. The surface topography of the rolls used in skin-pass cold rolling determines the surface finish of rolled sheets. In this sense, work rolls can be intentionally textured to produce certain topographical features on the final sheet surface. The maskless electrochemical texturing method (MECT) is a potential candidate for industrial-scale application due to its reduced texturing cost and time when compared to traditional texturing methods. However, there are few studies in the literature that address the MECT method applied to the topography control of cold rolling work rolls. The present work aims to analyze the viability of surface texturing via MECT of work rolls used in skin-pass cold rolling. In this study, we first investigated how texturing occurs for tool steel using flat textured samples to facilitate the understanding of the dissolution mechanisms involved. In this case, a specially designed texturing chamber was built to texture flat samples extracted from an actual work roll. The results indicated that the anodic dissolution involved in tool steel texturing occurs preferentially in the metallic matrix around the primary carbides. Then, we textured a work roll used in pilot-scale rolling tests, which required the development of a special prototype to texture cylindrical surfaces. After texturing, the texture transfer from the work roll to the sheets was investigated. Rolling tests showed that the work roll surface textured with a dimple pattern generated a pillar-shaped texture pattern on the sheet surface, possibly due to a reverse extrusion mechanism.
