Planetary health recognizes that human health, well-being, and sustainable development depend fundamentally on the integrity of natural ecosystems that regulate climate, maintain biodiversity, secure food and water resources, and protect populations from environmental risks. As environmental degradation increasingly threatens this life-support system, there is a growing need for economic indicators that explicitly recognize the value of natural capital alongside conventional measures of development. Gross Ecosystem Product (GEP) has emerged as comprehensive metric for quantifying the monetary value of ecosystem services and informing evidence-based policy. This study estimates India’s GEP for the period 2011–2012 to 2020–2021 using an ecosystem accounting framework aligned with the System of Environmental Economic Accounting (SEEA). The analysis integrates provisioning services (timber, non-timber forest products, fuelwood, and fisheries), regulating services (carbon sequestration), and cultural services (nature-based tourism) using market price, replacement cost, and benefit transfer methods based on secondary data from national and published sources. India’s total GEP is estimated at US$207.05 billion, highlighting the substantial but under-recognized contribution of ecosystems to the national economy and societal well-being. Regulating services dominate GDP, with carbon sequestration alone accounting for US$166.73 billion, followed by provisioning services, while cultural services contribute a relatively smaller share. These findings reveal a significant gap between ecosystem contributions and their representation in conventional metrics such as Gross Domestic Product (GDP), underscoring the limitations of growth-centric development frameworks. By integrating ecosystem values into national accounting, GEP provides a practical tool for advancing planetary health, strengthening climate resilience, conserving biodiversity, supporting ecosystem-based management, and guiding policies that align economic development with ecological sustainability and long-term human well-being. The sustainable restoration of tropical dry forest (TDF)—one of the planet’s most threatened ecosystems—is constrained by low community integration and limited cultural relevance, particularly in Afro-descendant territories, where the erosion of oral tradition and forest degradation reinforce one another. This study proposes a quantitative framework to systematize the biocultural memory embedded in oral tradition as an input for socially grounded, sustainable TDF restoration. A corpus of 401 works from the Afro-descendant community of the Patía Valley (Cauca, Colombia) was coded in a multidimensional database of 10 categories, and three indices were computed: the Biocultural Density Index (IDBC), the Biocultural Vulnerability Index (IVB), and an adaptation of Winter’s flora framework (IVBw), in a total version and a version restricted to wild/native species. The framework identifies the works of greatest biocultural density (IDBC max. = 84) and separates cultivated/introduced species of high cultural value (Limón, Yuca, Caña de azúcar), ones relevant to food sovereignty, and from wild/native species (e.g., Caña brava, Cañafístula, Guayacán, Ceiba) that constitute the restorable core. Cultural practices are the hubs of the system, traditional medicine is the most at risk of loss, and food security concentrates 43% of the flora records. These replicable tools link Afro-descendant knowledge to measurable, monitorable restoration priorities, advancing sustainable land management, biodiversity conservation and cultural sustainability. Cryptic biodiversity presents an ongoing challenge to the accuracy and effectiveness of biodiversity assessment and conservation. To address this, we developed a non-lethal genetic monitoring framework for the subterranean rodent, European lesser blind mole rat (BMR), Nannospalax leucodon species complex, which encompasses multiple chromosomally diversified and reproductively isolated cryptic-species and subspecies. Our workflow combines species and sex detection through: karyotyping, Inter-Simple Sequence Repeat (ISSR) PCR profiling, and Sry-based sex determination of 33 individual samples from five BMR cryptic-species collected at 25 localities in Serbia. As conventional karyotyping protocols for BMR required animal sacrifice, we developed the first non-lethal fibroblast culture-based karyotyping approach from BMR skin biopsy, producing high-quality metaphase chromosomes across five cryptic-species. Among twelve tested ISSR primers, three yielded reproducible, species-specific DNA profiles that resolved four of the five cryptic-species. The Sry assay accurately determined the sex of all examined individuals. Our findings demonstrate that integrating fibroblast culture-based karyotyping, with fast, cost-effective ISSR-PCR species identification, and Sry-based sex determination, provides a reliable approach for identifying and monitoring cryptic BMR species without sacrificing individuals. This framework has potential applications in conservation programmes and contributes to an integrative taxonomy approach essential for the study and protection of other cryptic taxa. Full article

Wool is often regarded as a low-value by-product of Alpine sheep farming, despite its potential to convey the ecosystem services (ESs) generated by these systems. This study examines how awareness and perception of these services are associated with consumer attitudes towards locally produced wool in the Lanzo Valleys in Northwestern Italy. A convenience sample of 400 adults familiar with the study area completed an online questionnaire. Principal Component Analysis identified two orientations towards wool products—Sustainability Orientation and Product-Value Orientation—which together explained 69.33% of the variance. A TwoStep Cluster Analysis based on the component scores identified four profiles within the study sample: Sustainability-sensitive (22%), Disinterested (14.25%), Eco-aesthetic (36%), and Aesthetically aware (27.75%). Sustainability-oriented respondents attributed greater importance to ES related to biodiversity, native-breed conservation and animal welfare, whereas aesthetic and experiential attributes represented an additional, distinct dimension of product evaluation. Residence status was not significantly associated with cluster membership. Given the non-probabilistic sampling design, these profiles should be interpreted as exploratory attitudinal patterns. The findings may inform differentiated communication and wool-valorisation strategies linking environmental, cultural, aesthetic and functional values. Full article

Protected Designation of Origin (PDO) products play a vital role in preserving cultural heritage, supporting rural economies, and promoting local breed biodiversity. However, few studies have validated instruments capable of assessing consumer knowledge, perceptions, and trust regarding PDO labels and authenticity cues. This study validated and optimized a survey instrument designed to evaluate consumer attitudes towards PDO cheeses, using Majorero and Palmero cheeses from the Canary Islands as case studies. A total of 539 valid questionnaires were collected before and after structured educational sessions. Cross-validated Canonical Discriminant Analysis techniques were employed to assess the reliability, discriminatory capacity, and predictive accuracy of survey items. Results revealed significant improvements in consumer knowledge and perceptions following the educational intervention. Participants demonstrated greater understanding of PDO regulations, increased confidence in sensory evaluation, and enhanced ability to identify authenticity cues. The discriminant model achieved a classification accuracy of 96.23% (AUC = 0.9925), confirming excellent predictive performance. Consumer attitudes were primarily influenced by territorial attachment, familiarity, and trust in certification rather than technical knowledge. These findings support educational and marketing strategies to strengthen origin labeling, improve consumer literacy, reinforce authenticity perceptions, and promote PDO products’ cultural and economic sustainability while providing a validated framework for future consumer research. The Annonaceae family in Mexico comprises a wide diversity of species with economic, cultural, agricultural, and pharmacological importance; however, research on this group remains fragmented. Therefore, this study analyzed the scientific output on Annonaceae in Mexico using a bibliometric approach. A total of 342 articles published between 1980 and 2025 in the Web of Science were retrieved and analyzed using VOSviewer version 1.6.16. The results showed a sustained increase in annual scientific production; approximately 90% of the articles were published in Q1 journals, with impact factors ranging from 1.3 to 13.4, highlighting the scientific relevance of this family. The main research areas were plant sciences, agriculture, biochemistry and molecular biology, entomology, and food science and technology. Emerging topics focused on the antitumor potential of species such as Annona muricata, A. cherimola, A. coriacea, and A. purpurea. Research on Annonaceae in Mexico has expanded in a multidisciplinary manner, although limited interaction between different areas and institutions persists. This field offers opportunities for biodiversity conservation, sustainable use, and the development of biotechnological and pharmacological applications. Full article

Pines (genus Pinus) are a diverse group of conifers widely distributed across the Northern Hemisphere, comprising more than 110 species worldwide. In Europe, pines are a defining component of forests, occupying environments that range from dry Mediterranean lowlands to high-elevation alpine zones. They support a wide spectrum of ecosystem services, from timber and non-wood products to protection, biodiversity, and cultural values. In this review, we bring together ecological traits, silvicultural practices, and management considerations for ten European pine species. This review examines ten major European pine species, including Scots pine (Pinus sylvestris), maritime pine (P. pinaster), stone pine (P. pinea), Aleppo pine (P. halepensis), black pine (P. nigra), mountain pine (P. mugo), Swiss stone pine (P. cembra), Turkish pine (P. brutia), Bosnian pine (P. heldreichii), and Macedonian pine (P. peuce). Together, these species span a wide range of European environments, with Pinus sylvestris showing the broadest distribution. Despite the extensive literature on pine species, information on their ecological, silvicultural, and management attributes remains fragmented across disciplines. To bridge this gap, this review draws on an expert-curated core of scientific and technical literature complemented by a structured literature search adapted from the PRISMA framework, compiling within a single framework their main ecological and silvicultural characteristics, altitudinal range, growth patterns, stand diversity, and management practices and the principal goods and ecosystem services they provide. The comparative analysis highlighted distinct functional groups among European pines, illustrating contrasting adaptive strategies across environmental gradients, with altitudinal distributions ranging from sea level to 2400 m. Mediterranean species, such as P. halepensis, P. pinaster, and P. brutia, generally showed higher drought and fire adaptation, whereas mountain taxa such as P. cembra, P. mugo, and P. heldreichii displayed greater cold tolerance but increased vulnerability due to restricted climatic niches and slow regeneration. Broadly distributed species, such as P. sylvestris and P. nigra, exhibited intermediate ecological strategies, with responses strongly influenced by regional climatic conditions. By integrating evidence on distribution patterns, functional traits, growth patterns, and management practices, this review provides a comparative framework to support adaptive forest management and informed species selection, helping to safeguard forest functions and their associated benefits under ongoing climate change. Lardizabala biternata is an endemic vine and the sole species of the monotypic genus Lardizabala, distributed across central–southern Chile and producing edible fruits traditionally harvested from wild populations. Despite its cultural relevance, potential agronomic value, and evolutionary singularity, its conservation status remains poorly understood because of incomplete distributional knowledge and historical nomenclatural inconsistencies. Here, we conducted a preliminary record-based spatial conservation assessment of L. biternata using a taxonomically and geographically curated occurrence database integrated with Kernel Density Estimation (KDE), Extent of Occurrence (EOO), Area of Occupancy (AOO), overlap analyses with Chile’s protected-area network (SNASPE) and the Chilean Winter Rainfall–Valdivian Forests biodiversity hotspot, and ecological representativeness assessments based on mapped vegetation-class units. Our analyses revealed substantial spatial and ecological conservation gaps. Most documented occurrence records were located outside protected areas, while KDE-derived occurrence-record density patterns were concentrated within the biodiversity hotspot, a region characterized by high endemism and intense anthropogenic pressure. Although EOO indicated a relatively broad geographic extent, AOO indicated restricted occupancy based on documented records. In addition, several mapped vegetation-class units intersecting the 95% KDE-derived occurrence-record density area lacked formal conservation coverage entirely. Together, these findings suggest that L. biternata may warrant greater conservation attention than previously recognized. This study provides the first integrated record-based spatial conservation assessment of the species and establishes a baseline framework for future conservation evaluations, ecological studies, and ex situ conservation strategies. The sustainability of Coffea arabica L. production in Oaxaca, Mexico, is increasingly threatened by climate change, biodiversity loss, and pest pressure, along with other factors that undermine the responsiveness of small-scale producers in the state, such as trade restrictions and coffee-related regulatory frameworks. These challenges are particularly acute in mountainous regions like Oaxaca, where coffee cultivation plays a central role in rural livelihoods, cultural identity, and territorial development. Studies demonstrate that localized models are vital for rural improvement, reducing the carbon footprint, and maintaining economic viability. Despite extensive research on agronomic, environmental, and market factors, sustainability strategies for coffee production often remain fragmented and insufficiently integrated. This systematic review used the Scopus Review database, searching by title, abstract, and keywords such as “sustainable coffee production” from 2015 to 2026. A total of 1085 documents were retrieved and processed using VOSviewer software to generate a bibliographic map in which frequently used words are grouped by color to show their relationships. Using Oaxaca as a regional case study, the article synthesizes the key factors influencing coffee productivity and quality, examines the main socio-environmental challenges, and proposes a conceptual framework that integrates agroecosystem management with socioeconomic processes under external climate and market pressures. The proposed framework highlights the central role of agroforestry systems and ecosystem services in improving climate resilience, conserving biodiversity, and supporting quality-oriented value chains. These processes generate feedback loops that influence farmers’ livelihoods, food security, and territorial sustainability. While grounded in the context of Oaxaca, the socio-ecological review and conceptual framework presented here are applicable to other Arabica-producing regions facing similar challenges, providing a structured basis for future research, policy design, and integrated sustainability strategies. Land-use and land-cover (LULC) change is a major driver of ecosystem degradation and ecosystem service loss in tropical landscapes. This study assessed the impacts of LULC changes between 1985 and 2023 on the potential of different LULC classes to supply ecosystem services in the Upper Rio Pardo Basin (Rio Pardo and Rio São João do Paraíso watersheds), northern Minas Gerais, Brazil. LULC data from the MapBiomas Project were used to quantify transitions among LULC classes within the study area. The potential supply of ecosystem services was assessed using the Burkhard matrix, adapted to local environmental conditions and informed by expert knowledge, while the relative importance of ecosystem services was evaluated through a participatory assessment involving local communities. The expansion of pasturelands and commercial forest plantations was identified as the primary driver of ecosystem service loss in the study region. Native ecosystems showed the highest potential to provide regulating, supporting, provisioning, and cultural ecosystem services, particularly water regulation, soil protection, carbon sequestration, and biodiversity conservation. In contrast, anthropogenic land uses were primarily associated with provisioning services and showed limited capacity to sustain regulating and supporting services, indicating clear trade-offs between production and ecosystem functioning. Local communities identified water-related services as the highest priority, followed by climate regulation, soil fertility, and food provision. These findings demonstrate the value of integrating expert-based and participatory approaches to ecosystem service assessment and provide a basis for territorial planning strategies that prioritize the conservation and restoration of native vegetation, particularly in hydrologically sensitive areas. Shansha Bay, southeastern China, is a typical semi-enclosed bay facing intense anthropogenic pressure, with mariculture production reaching approximately 660,000 tons annually, predominantly driven by the large yellow croaker (Larimichthys crocea) industry. To assess how these pressures influence biodiversity detection, we employed eDNA metabarcoding targeting the 12S rRNA gene to survey fish diversity across 10 sites, integrating both surface water and sediment matrices. A total of 40 species belonging to 16 orders, 27 families and 32 genera, were identified. Among them, L. crocea, Bostrychus sinensis, Clupanodon thrissa and Siganus fuscescens are the dominate species, which comprised over half of all OTUs. Comparison with historical trawl surveys revealed 30 newly recorded species, including the Japanese eel (Anguilla japonica) and oarfish (Regalecus glesne). Alpha diversity was low (Shannon: 0.69–1.93), with significant spatial disparities driven by freshwater runoff and hydrodynamics. While eDNA effectively captured the dominance of cultured species like L. crocea, the extreme biomass signal poses challenges for detecting wild populations. Insects are fundamental to ecosystem functioning and human welfare, yet their multifaceted contributions to ecological services, food security, rural livelihoods, and cultural heritage remain insufficiently represented in mainstream scientific research and policy. Despite growing global recognition of insect decline and the potential of entomophagy to address food system challenges, integrated evidence linking global ecological knowledge with community-level indigenous practices is lacking, particularly in sub-Saharan African contexts. A narrative bibliometric review was conducted through systematic searches of Web of Science, Scopus, and PubMed databases, supplemented by FAO, IPBES, and MDPI Insects repositories. Searches were conducted between January 2024 and May 2026 using keyword combinations spanning entomophagy, ecosystem services, insect decline, indigenous knowledge and edible insects in Africa. Four thematic dimensions are synthesised: (1) ecological services, (2) nutritional value and food security, (3) economic contribution and livelihoods, and (4) socio-cultural and ethnomedicinal significance. The Venda region of Limpopo Province emerges as a compelling case study of how insect–human relationships intersect with biodiversity conservation, food security, and rural development. Actions include integrating indigenous knowledge with scientific research, strengthening sustainable community-based insect harvesting practices, and incorporating edible insects into South Africa’s food, nutrition, and biodiversity policies in alignment with global sustainability and biodiversity goals. The principal critical issue in the production of Vin Santo passito wine is the high likelihood of fermentation arrests or sluggish fermentation, resulting in low sensory quality. A potential solution is to select indigenous yeasts from well-conducted spontaneous fermentations. In this study, a novel mixed starter culture consisting of two indigenous strains, Saccharomyces cerevisiae Ris III and Zygosaccharomyces rouxii Zr186, was evaluated. After selecting the strains and testing their compatibility, the mixed culture was used as a starter in the winemaking process of dried grapes, which was conducted in barrels of various sizes. The fermentations were monitored microbiologically for a period of 100 days to verify the ability of the inoculated strains to dominate and thus facilitate the fermentation process. Both strains dominated the fermentations: S. cerevisiae showed a 100% isolation rate immediately, while Z. rouxii achieved dominance within a month. The mixed starter demonstrated a 25% improvement in fermentation purity for the same barrel size. Sensory analyses revealed that the wines produced with the mixed starter were very consistent with one another, contrasting with those obtained through spontaneous fermentations, and received the highest scores for gustatory descriptors. In conclusion, this mixed culture represents an effective strategy for standardizing fermentation and improving the sensory quality of Vin Santo. Full article

Coffee cultivation offers benefits such as biodiversity conservation, economic sustenance for farmers, and health advantages. This quantitative, microsociological, and applied study, with a non-experimental, cross-sectional design and explanatory level, aimed to evaluate the impact of agronomic practices and socioeconomic factors on coffee yields among farmers in the Monzón Valley (Huánuco, Peru). Using the hypothetico-deductive method, logit and probit regression models were employed, employing an ordered probabilistic model with multiple responses. Data were collected through simple random sampling, surveying 152 producers. The probit model proved most suitable for explaining yield levels, classified as low (<0.60 Tn/ha/year), medium (0.61–1.00), and high (1.01–2.20). The most influential indicators were biological and cultural control, crop age, organic farming practices, altitude, cultivation of more than one variety, seed selection, monetary income, and farmer experience. The study concludes that the probit model adequately explains the relationship between the agronomic and socioeconomic variables that determine yield. The findings provide valuable evidence for the design of local agricultural policies and producer support programs. Furthermore, the study explicitly contributes to the advancement of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly SDG 1 (No Poverty), SDG 8 (Decent Work and Economic Growth), and SDG 12 (Responsible Consumption and Production), by identifying factors that link sustainable coffee productivity with the socioeconomic well-being of farming communities. Fruit mites, particularly Panonychus ulmi, Tetranychus urticae, and eriophyid mites, are among the most economically important arthropod pests in apple orchards, causing significant reductions in photosynthetic efficiency, fruit quality, and yield. Their management has traditionally relied on chemical acaricides; however, the widespread development of resistance, adverse effects on beneficial arthropods, and increasing environmental concerns have highlighted the limitations of pesticide-dependent control strategies. This review critically evaluates current advances in the management of major fruit mite species affecting apple orchards, with particular emphasis on Panonychus ulmi, Tetranychus urticae, and eriophyid mites. The biology, ecology, and economic significance of these pests are examined together with contemporary chemical control strategies, mechanisms of acaricide resistance, and sustainable resistance management. Particular attention is given to predatory mites, conservation biological control, habitat management, and ecological engineering as essential components of Integrated Pest Management (IPM). The review also examines the integration of biological, chemical, and cultural control measures within IPM programs and provides a regional perspective on fruit mite management in Southeastern Kazakhstan, highlighting local challenges, knowledge gaps, and opportunities for implementing ecologically based IPM systems. Emerging approaches, including precision agriculture, digital monitoring, molecular diagnostics, and climate-adaptive pest management, are also assessed. The available evidence indicates that sustainable fruit mite management requires a transition from pesticide-centered control toward integrated, ecologically resilient orchard protection systems in which biological control and IPM serve as the foundation, while chemical control functions as a targeted supporting tool. To our knowledge, no previous review has comprehensively integrated biological control, acaricide resistance management, ecologically based IPM, and region-specific challenges for fruit mite management in Southeastern Kazakhstan into a unified framework while also identifying key research priorities for Central Asia, including resistance surveillance, biodiversity conservation, climate adaptation, and digital decision-support technologies.
