Upon reaching stabilized production in waterflooded reservoirs, waterflood performance curves are conventionally used to predict technically recoverable reserves (TRRs). However, as reservoirs enter high water-cut stages, the relationship between the relative permeability ratio and saturation becomes nonlinear, causing deflection in waterflood performance curves. This leads to systematic overestimation of both predicted TRR and ultimate recovery factors. To overcome these limitations in conventional TRR prediction methods, this study establishes a novel relative permeability ratio-saturation relationship based on characteristic relative permeability curve behaviors. The proposed model is validated for three distinct fluid-rock interaction types. We further develop a permeability-driven forecasting model for oil production rates and water cuts. Comparative analyses with a conventional waterflood curve methodology demonstrate significant accuracy improvements. The results show that while traditional methods predict TRR ranging from 78.40 to 92.29 million tons, our model yields 70.73 million tons—effectively resolving overestimation issues caused by curve deflection during high water-cut phases. This approach establishes a robust framework for determining critical development parameters, including economic field lifespan, strategy adjustments, and ultimate recovery factor. Full article

Accurate forecasting of tropical cyclone (TC) tracks is critical for disaster preparedness and risk mitigation. While traditional numerical weather prediction (NWP) systems have long served as the backbone of operational forecasting, they face limitations in computational cost and sensitivity to initial conditions. In recent years, deep learning (DL) has emerged as a promising alternative, offering data-driven modeling capabilities for capturing nonlinear spatiotemporal patterns. This paper presents a comprehensive review of DL-based approaches for TC track forecasting. We categorize all DL-based TC tracking models according to the architecture, including recurrent neural networks (RNNs), convolutional neural networks (CNNs), Transformers, graph neural networks (GNNs), generative models, and Fourier-based operators. To enable rigorous performance comparison, we introduce a Unified Geodesic Distance Error (UGDE) metric that standardizes evaluation across diverse studies and lead times. Based on this metric, we conduct a critical comparison of state-of-the-art models and identify key insights into their relative strengths, limitations, and suitable application scenarios. Building on this framework, we conduct a critical cross-model analysis that reveals key trends, performance disparities, and architectural tradeoffs. Our analysis also highlights several persistent challenges, such as long-term forecast degradation, limited physical integration, and generalization to extreme events, pointing toward future directions for developing more robust and operationally viable DL models for TC track forecasting. To support reproducibility and facilitate standardized evaluation, we release an open-source UGDE conversion tool on GitHub. Full article

Accurate micro gas flow measurement is critical for medical ventilator calibration, environmental gas monitoring, and semiconductor manufacturing. Laminar flowmeters are widely employed in micro gas flow measurement applications owing to their inherent advantages of high linearity, the absence of moving components, and a broad measurement range. Nevertheless, due to the low measurement accuracy under micro gas flow caused by nonlinear errors and a relatively complex structure, traditional laminar flow measurement devices exhibit limitations in micro gas flow measurement scenarios. This study proposes a novel micro gas flow measurement method based on a single capillary laminar flow element, which simplifies the structure and enhances applicability in the field of micro gas flow. Through structural optimization with precise control of the capillary length–diameter ratios and theoretical error correction based on computational analysis, nonlinear errors were effectively reduced while improving the measurement accuracy in the field of micro gas flow. The proposed methodology was systematically validated through computational fluid dynamics simulations (ANSYS Fluent 2021 R1) and experimental investigations using a dedicated test platform. The experimental results show that the relative error of the measurement system within the full measurement range is less than ±0.6% (1–10 cm3/min; cm3/min means cubic centimeter per minute), and its accuracy is superior to 1% of reading (1% Rd) or 1.5% of reading (1.5% Rd) of conventional laminar flowmeters. The fitting curve of the flow rate versus the pressure difference derived from the measurement results maintains an excellent linear correlation (R2 > 0.99), thus confirming that this method has practical application value in the field of micro gas flow measurement. Humanoid robots have attracted considerable attention for their anthropomorphic structure, extended workspace, and versatile capabilities. This paper presents a novel humanoid upper-body robotic system comprising a pair of 8-degree-of-freedom (DOF) arms, a 3-DOF head, and a 3-DOF torso—yielding a 22-DOF architecture inspired by human biomechanics and implemented via standardized hollow joint modules. To overcome the critical reliance of zeroing neural network (ZNN)-based trajectory tracking on the Jacobian matrix derivative, we propose an integration-enhanced matrix derivative observer (IEMDO) that incorporates nonlinear feedback and integral correction. The observer is theoretically proven to ensure asymptotic convergence and enables accurate, real-time estimation of matrix derivatives, addressing a fundamental limitation in conventional ZNN solvers. Workspace analysis reveals that the proposed design achieves an 87.7% larger total workspace and a remarkable 3.683-fold expansion in common workspace compared to conventional dual-arm baselines. Furthermore, the observer demonstrates high estimation accuracy for high-dimensional matrices and strong robustness to noise. When integrated into the ZNN controller, the IEMDO achieves high-precision trajectory tracking in both simulation and real-world experiments. The proposed framework provides a practical and theoretically grounded approach for redundant humanoid arm control. Full article

Understanding vehicle emissions is essential for developing effective carbon reduction strategies in the transport sector. Conventional emission models often assume homogeneity and linearity, overlooking real-world asymmetries that arise from variations in vehicle design and powertrain configurations. This study explores how machine learning and explainable AI techniques can effectively capture both symmetric and asymmetric emission patterns across different vehicle types, thereby contributing to more sustainable transport planning. Addressing a key gap in the existing literature, the study poses the following question: how do structural and behavioral factors contribute to asymmetric emission responses in internal combustion engine vehicles compared to new energy vehicles? Utilizing a large-scale Spanish vehicle registration dataset, the analysis classifies vehicles by powertrain type and applies five supervised learning algorithms to predict CO2 emissions. SHapley Additive exPlanations (SHAPs) are employed to identify nonlinear and threshold-based relationships between emissions and vehicle characteristics such as fuel consumption, weight, and height. Among the models tested, the Random Forest algorithm achieves the highest predictive accuracy. The findings reveal critical asymmetries in emission behavior, particularly among hybrid vehicles, which challenge the assumption of uniform policy applicability. This study provides both methodological innovation and practical insights for symmetry-aware emission modeling, offering support for more targeted eco-design and policy decisions that align with long-term sustainability goals. This study synthesizes and comparatively investigates two squaric acid-based phthalocyanine-like dyes, SNF and its long-chain alkylated derivative LNF, to systematically elucidate the influence of peripheral hydrophobic groups on their third-order nonlinear optical (NLO) properties. The NLO characteristics were comprehensively characterized using femtosecond Z-scan and I-scan techniques at both 800 nm and 900 nm. Both dyes exhibited strong saturable absorption (SA), confirming their potential as saturable absorbers. Critically, the comparative analysis revealed that SNF exhibits a significantly greater nonlinear absorption coefficient (β) compared to LNF under identical conditions. For instance, at 800 nm, the β of SNF was approximately 3–5 times larger than that of LNF. This result conclusively demonstrates that the introduction of long hydrophobic alkyl chains attenuates the NLO response. Furthermore, I-scan measurements revealed excellent SA performance, with high modulation depths (e.g., LNF: 43.0% at 900 nm) and low saturation intensities. This work not only clarifies the structure–property relationship in these D-A-D dyes but also presents a clear strategy for modulating the NLO properties of organic chromophores for applications in near-infrared pulsed lasers. The integration of large-scale wind power clusters significantly reduces the inertia level of the power system, increasing the risk of frequency instability. Accurately assessing the equivalent virtual inertia of wind farms is critical for grid stability. Addressing the dual bottlenecks in existing inertia assessment methods, where physics-based modeling requires full control transparency and data-driven approaches lack interpretability for inertia response analysis, thus failing to reconcile commercial confidentiality constraints with analytical needs, this paper proposes a symbolic regression framework for inertia evaluation in doubly fed wind farms with limited control information constraints. First, a dynamic model for the inertia response of DFIG wind farms is established, and a mathematical expression for the equivalent virtual inertia time constant under different control strategies is derived. Based on this, a nonlinear function library reflecting frequency-active power dynamic is constructed, and a symbolic regression model representing the system’s inertia response characteristics is established by correlating operational data. Then, sparse relaxation optimization is applied to identify unknown parameters, allowing for the quantification of the wind farm’s equivalent virtual inertia. Finally, the effectiveness of the proposed method is validated in an IEEE three-machine nine-bus system containing a doubly fed wind power cluster. Case studies show that the proposed method can fully utilize prior model knowledge and operational data to accurately assess the system’s inertia level with low computational complexity. Full article

Neural networks (NNs) achieve breakthroughs in computer vision and natural language processing,yet their “black box” nature persists. Traditional methods prioritise parameter optimisation and loss design, overlooking NNs’ fundamental structure as topologically organised nonlinear computational systems. This work proposes a complex network theory framework decoding structure–function coupling by mapping convolutional layers, fully connected layers, and Dropout modules into graph representations. To overcome limitations of heuristic compression techniques, we develop a topology-sensitive adaptive pruning algorithm that evaluates critical paths via node strength centrality, preserving structural–functional integrity. On CIFAR-10, our method achieves 55.5% parameter reduction with only 7.8% accuracy degradation—significantly outperforming traditional approaches. Crucially, retrained pruned networks exceed original model accuracy by up to 2.63%, demonstrating that topology optimisation unlocks latent model potential. This research establishes a paradigm shift from empirical to topologically rationalised neural architecture design, providing theoretical foundations for deep learning optimisation dynamics. The aircraft nose-wheel steering system serves as a critical component for ensuring ground taxiing safety and maneuvering efficiency. However, its dynamic control stability faces significant challenges under complex operational conditions. Existing research predominantly focuses on single-discipline modeling, with insufficient in-depth analysis of the coupling effects between hydraulic system dynamics and mechanical dynamics. Traditional PID controllers exhibit limitations in scenarios involving nonlinear time-varying conditions caused by normal load fluctuations of the landing gear buffer strut during high-speed landing phases, including increased control overshoot and inadequate adaptability to abrupt load variations. These issues severely compromise the stability of high-speed deviation correction and overall aircraft safety. To address these challenges, this study constructs a digital twin model based on real aircraft data and innovatively implements multidisciplinary co-simulation via Simcenter 3D, AMESim 2021.1, and MATLAB R2020a. A fuzzy adaptive PID controller is specifically designed to achieve adaptive adjustment of control parameters. Comparative analysis through co-simulation demonstrates that the proposed mechanical–electrical–hydraulic collaborative control strategy significantly reduces response delay, effectively minimizes control overshoot, and decreases hydraulic pressure-fluctuation amplitude by over 85.2%. This work provides a novel methodology for optimizing steering stability under nonlinear interference scenarios, offering substantial engineering applicability and promotion value. Full article

To investigate temporal deformation mechanisms of hydraulic asphalt concrete slope flow under evolving temperatures, this study developed a novel temperature-controlled slope flow intelligent test apparatus. Using this apparatus, slope flow tests were conducted at four temperature levels: 20 °C, 35 °C, 50 °C, and 70 °C. By applying nonlinear dynamics theory, the temporal evolution of slope flow deformation and its nonlinear mechanical characteristics under varying temperatures were thoroughly analyzed. Results indicate that the thermal stability of hydraulic asphalt concrete is synergistically governed by the phase-transition behavior between asphalt binder and aggregates. Temporal evolution of slope flow exhibits a distinct three-stage pattern as follows: rapid growth (0~12 h), where sharp temperature rise disrupts the primary skeleton of coarse aggregates; decelerated growth (12~24 h), where an embryonic secondary skeleton forms and progressively resists deformation; stabilization (>24 h), where reorganization of coarse aggregates is completed, establishing structural equilibrium. The thermal stability temperature influence factor (δ) shows a nonlinear concave growth trend with increasing test temperature. Dynamically, this process transitions sequentially through critical stability, nonlinear stability, period-doubling oscillatory stability, and unsteady states. Full article

Adaptive Ensemble Learning for Financial Time-Series Forecasting: A Hypernetwork-Enhanced Reservoir Computing Framework with Multi-Scale Temporal Modeling

Financial market forecasting remains challenging due to complex nonlinear dynamics and regime-dependent behaviors that traditional models struggle to capture effectively. This research introduces the Adaptive Financial Reservoir Network with Hypernetwork Flow (AFRN–HyperFlow) framework, a novel ensemble architecture integrating Echo State Networks, temporal convolutional networks, mixture density networks, adaptive Hypernetworks, and deep state-space models for enhanced financial time-series prediction. Through comprehensive feature engineering incorporating technical indicators, spectral decomposition, reservoir-based representations, and flow dynamics characteristics, the framework achieves superior forecasting performance across diverse market conditions. Experimental validation on 26,817 balanced samples demonstrates exceptional results with an F1-score of 0.8947, representing a 12.3% improvement over State-of-the-Art baseline methods, while maintaining robust performance across asset classes from equities to cryptocurrencies. The adaptive Hypernetwork mechanism enables real-time regime-change detection with 2.3 days average lag and 95% accuracy, while systematic SHAP analysis provides comprehensive interpretability essential for regulatory compliance. Ablation studies reveal Echo State Networks contribute 9.47% performance improvement, validating the architectural design. The AFRN–HyperFlow framework addresses critical limitations in uncertainty quantification, regime adaptability, and interpretability, offering promising directions for next-generation financial forecasting systems incorporating quantum computing and federated learning approaches. Identifying habitat characteristics is essential for conserving critically endangered species. When quantifying species habitat characteristics, ignoring data types may lead to misunderstandings about species’ specific habitat requirements. This study focused on the critically endangered Chinese pangolin in Guangdong Province, China, and divided the study area into 600 m × 600 m grids based on its average home range. The burrow number within each grid was obtained through line transect surveys, with burrow numbers/line transect lengths used as direct indicators of habitat utilization intensity. The relationships with sixteen environmental variables, which could be divided into three categories, including topographic, human disturbance and land cover composition, were quantified using the GAM method. We also converted continuous data into binary data (0, 1), constructed GAMs and compared them with habitat utilization intensity models. Our results indicate that the habitat utilization intensity model identified profile curvature and slope as primary factors, showing a nonlinear response to profile curvature (Edf = 5.610, p = 0.014) and a positive relationship with slope (Edf = 1.000, p = 0.006). The presence–absence model emphasized distance to water (Edf = 1.000, p = 0.014), slope (Edf = 1.709, p = 0.043) and aspect (Edf = 2.000, p = 0.026). The intensity model explained significantly more deviance, captured complex nonlinear relationships and supported higher model complexity without overfitting. This study demonstrates that habitat utilization intensity data provides a more ecologically informative basis for in situ conservation (e.g., identifying core habitats), and the process from habitat selection to habitat utilization should be integrated to reveal species’ habitat characteristics. Modeling the Abrasive Index from Mineralogical and Calorific Properties Using Tree-Based Machine Learning: A Case Study on the KwaZulu-Natal Coalfield

Accurate prediction of the coal abrasive index (AI) is critical for optimizing coal processing efficiency and minimizing equipment wear in industrial applications. This study explores tree-based machine learning models; Random Forest (RF), Gradient Boosting Trees (GBT), and Extreme Gradient Boosting (XGBoost) to predict AI using selected coal properties. A database of 112 coal samples from the KwaZulu-Natal Coalfield in South Africa was used. Initial predictions using all eight input properties revealed suboptimal testing performance (R2: 0.63–0.72), attributed to outliers and noisy data. Feature importance analysis identified calorific value, quartz, ash, and Pyrite as dominant predictors, aligning with their physicochemical roles in abrasiveness. After data cleaning and feature selection, XGBoost achieved superior accuracy (R2 = 0.92), outperforming RF (R2 = 0.85) and GBT (R2 = 0.81). The results highlight XGBoost’s robustness in modeling non-linear relationships between coal properties and AI. This approach offers a cost-effective alternative to traditional laboratory methods, enabling industries to optimize coal selection, reduce maintenance costs, and enhance operational sustainability through data-driven decision-making. Additionally, quartz and Ash content were identified as the most influential parameters on AI using the Cosine Amplitude technique, while calorific value had the least impact among the selected features. To enable safe and effective human–robot collaboration (HRC) in smart manufacturing, it is critical to seamlessly integrate sensing, cognition, and prediction into the robot controller for real-time awareness, response, and communication inside a heterogeneous environment (robots, humans, and equipment). The proposed approach takes advantage of the prediction capabilities of nonlinear model predictive control (NMPC) to execute safe path planning based on feedback from a vision system. To satisfy the requirements of real-time path planning, an embedded solver based on a penalty method is applied. However, due to tight sampling times, NMPC solutions are approximate; therefore, the safety of the system cannot be guaranteed. To address this, we formulate a novel safety-critical paradigm that uses an exponential control barrier function (ECBF) as a safety filter. Several common human–robot assembly subtasks have been integrated into a real-life HRC assembly task to validate the performance of the proposed controller and to investigate whether integrating human pose prediction can help with safe and efficient collaboration. The robot uses OptiTrack cameras for perception and dynamically generates collision-free trajectories to the predicted target interactive position. Results for a number of different configurations confirm the efficiency of the proposed motion planning and execution framework, with a 23.2% reduction in execution time achieved for the HRC task compared to an implementation without human motion prediction. Fatigue Life Prediction of CFRP-FBG Sensor-Reinforced RC Beams Enabled by LSTM-Based Deep Learning

Amidst the escalating demand for high-precision structural health monitoring in large-scale engineering applications, carbon fiber-reinforced polymer fiber Bragg grating (CFRP-FBG) sensors have emerged as a pivotal technology for fatigue life evaluation, owing to their exceptional sensitivity and intrinsic immunity to electromagnetic interference. A time-series predictive architecture based on long short-term memory (LSTM) networks is developed in this work to facilitate intelligent fatigue life assessment of structures subjected to complex cyclic loading by capturing and modeling critical spectral characteristics of CFRP-FBG sensors, specifically the side-mode suppression ratio and main-lobe peak-to-valley ratio. To enhance model robustness and generalization, Principal Component Analysis (PCA) was employed to isolate the most salient spectral features, followed by data preprocessing via normalization and model optimization through the integration of the Adam optimizer and Dropout regularization strategy. Relative to conventional Backpropagation (BP) neural networks, the LSTM model demonstrated a substantial improvement in predicting the side-mode suppression ratio, achieving a 61.62% reduction in mean squared error (MSE) and a 34.99% decrease in root mean squared error (RMSE), thereby markedly enhancing robustness to outliers and ensuring greater overall prediction stability. In predicting the peak-to-valley ratio, the model attained a notable 24.9% decrease in mean absolute error (MAE) and a 21.2% reduction in root mean squared error (RMSE), thereby substantially curtailing localized inaccuracies. The forecasted confidence intervals were correspondingly narrower and exhibited diminished fluctuation, highlighting the LSTM architecture’s enhanced proficiency in capturing nonlinear dynamics and modeling temporal dependencies. The proposed method manifests considerable practical engineering relevance and delivers resilient intelligent assistance for the seamless implementation of CFRP-FBG sensor technology in structural health monitoring and fatigue life prognostics.
