This study presented an application of thermomechanical processing consisting of cold rolling and subsequent annealing in SP2215 heat-resistant steel to investigate the effects of thermomechanical processing parameters on the evolution of grain boundary character distribution (GBCD) and to elucidate the relationship between GBCD and creep properties. The experimental results show that the optimal process, characterized by 10% cold rolling reduction followed by annealing at 1100 °C for 10 min, was determined to significantly increase the fraction of low-Σ coincidence site lattice (CSL) boundaries up to 74.27%, and effectively disrupt the connectivity of the random boundary network, as corroborated by the highest average twin-related domain (TRD) size of 42.58 μm and average number of grains per TRD of 7.28. Such a modified GBCD leads to a notable enhancement in creep performance, resulting from the induction of a high fraction of low-Σ CSL boundaries and the disruption of the random boundary network, which effectively inhibits intergranular crack initiation and propagation during creep deformation. With the rapid transition of power transmission systems toward higher capacity, longer distance, and improved efficiency, aluminum alloys from the 6xxx (Al–Mg–Si) and 8xxx (Al–Fe) series have become key structural materials for overhead conductors and power cables due to their low density, cost effectiveness, and favorable strength–conductivity balance. Compared with traditional steel-reinforced conductors, optimized aluminum alloy conductors can reduce structural weight by approximately 30–40% and installation cost by about 20–30%, while maintaining comparable current-carrying capacity. This review systematically focuses on modification methods and research progress of aluminum alloy cores for electric wires and cables. The strengthening characteristics of 6xxx alloys (heat-treatment responsiveness and precipitation strengthening) and the creep-resistance stability of 8xxx alloys are comparatively analyzed. Four core performance requirements—high electrical conductivity, mechanical strength, creep resistance, and corrosion resistance—are summarized as evaluation criteria for conductor applications. Particular emphasis is placed on three major modification strategies: (1) microalloying (e.g., Zr, Sc, rare earth elements) for precipitation and dispersoid stabilization; (2) thermomechanical process optimization for grain refinement and strength–conductivity balance; (3) composite reinforcement for high-temperature and ultra-high-strength applications. Quantitative literature data indicate that microalloying and process optimization typically achieve 15–40% strength improvement with conductivity variation within 3–5% IACS, while composite strategies may provide 30–80% strength enhancement but often at the expense of 5–20% conductivity reduction. The distinct applicability of 6xxx and 8xxx alloys under different service conditions is clarified, providing guidance for conductor material selection. Finally, future research directions—including precise composition–process integration, advanced thermomechanical control, and scalable modification technologies—are proposed to support high-performance, cost-effective, and large-scale deployment of aluminum alloy conductors. Thermal excursions during post-weld heat treatment (PWHT) and on-site fabrication frequently compromise the integrity of Grade 92 steel. While hardness fluctuations are documented, the correlation between initial properties and long-term creep stability remains controversial. This study aims to evaluate the relationship between thermal history and subsequent creep performance. Heat treatments of T92 steel across a wide temperature range (760–1000 °C) were performed, followed by creep tests at 600 °C/130 MPa and microstructural characterization. Results reveal a non-monotonic evolution of hardness and strength, reaching a minimum at 850 °C due to martensitic lath recovery into ferrite, but nearly doubling the as-received (AR) values above 900 °C due to fresh martensite formation. Creep life drops to a minimum at 850 °C and recovers to the AR level at 950 °C. A significant “decoupling” occurs at 1000 °C, where the sample possesses the highest hardness but only exhibits one-fourth the life of the 950 °C sample. Superior performance stems from the retained M23C6 and its dynamic precipitation, which pins dislocations to form micro-lath structures. Conversely, 1000 °C facilitates full carbide dissolution, accelerating dislocation recovery. These findings emphasize precise PWHT control and demonstrate that a 950 °C rejuvenation treatment can restore over-tempered or damaged components. Full article

Steel slag is a major solid waste generated by the steelmaking industry. Its characteristics, including high hardness and large specific surface area, offer the potential to replace traditional mineral fillers in asphalt mixtures. However, the high alkalinity of unmodified steel slag often leads to unbalanced rheological properties and insufficient moisture stability in asphalt mastic. In this study, a modified steel slag filler was prepared using a process involving crushing and screening, water washing for dealkalization, and surface modification with a silane coupling agent. Using limestone powder and hydrated lime as control groups, the modification effects on base asphalt mastic were systematically investigated. Rheological properties were characterized using a dynamic shear rheometer (DSR) and bending beam rheometer (BBR). Interfacial performance was evaluated through pull-off tests and water immersion dispersion tests. Furthermore, mechanisms were elucidated using X-ray Fluorescence (XRF), BET specific surface area analysis, and surface free energy (SFE) tests. The results indicate that the modified steel slag significantly enhances the high-temperature deformation resistance of the asphalt mastic. At 58 °C, the complex modulus reached 7.3 MPa, representing increases of 43.3% compared to limestone powder mastic. At −18 °C, the creep stiffness increased by only 3.0%, suggesting that low-temperature cracking resistance remained fundamentally stable. The water immersion dispersion loss rate was 2.12%, and the attenuation rate of pull-off strength after water immersion was 12.5%, indicating that its resistance to moisture damage is superior to that of limestone powder and comparable to that of hydrated lime. Mechanism analysis reveals that the large specific surface area of the modified steel slag strengthens physical adsorption, while the basic oxides undergo a weak acid–base reaction with the acidic components of the asphalt. Additionally, surface modification improves compatibility. The preparation process for modified steel slag is simple; it can be used as a standalone substitute for traditional mineral fillers, balancing both performance and environmental benefits. Thermal and nuclear power systems require materials capable of sustaining high mechanical and thermal loads over prolonged service durations. Among these, 9Cr heat-resistant steels are particularly attractive due to their superior mechanical strength and extended creep rupture life, making them suitable for extreme environments. In this study, multiple machine learning models were explored to predict the creep rupture life of 9Cr heat-resistant steels. A comprehensive dataset of 913 samples, compiled from experimental results and literature, included eight input variables—covering chemical composition, stress, and temperature—and one output variable, the creep rupture life. The optimized artificial neural network (ANN) model achieved the highest predictive accuracy with a regularization coefficient of 0.01, 10,000 training iterations, and five hidden layers with 30 neurons per layer, attaining an R2 of 0.9718 for the test dataset. Beyond accurate prediction, single- and two-variable sensitivity analyses were used to elucidate statistically meaningful trends and interactions among the input parameters governing creep rupture life. The analyses indicated that among all variables, test conditions—particularly the test temperature—exert a pronounced negative effect on creep life, significantly reducing durability at elevated temperatures. Additionally, an optimization module enables identification of input conditions to achieve desired creep life, while the Index of Relative Importance (IRI) and quantitative effect analysis enhance interpretability. This framework represents a robust and reliable tool for long-term creep life assessment and the design of 9Cr steels for high-temperature applications. Full article

This study examines initial and repair welds between creep-resistant steels, P22 and P91, using ER90S-B3 and ERNiCrMo-3 steel-based and nickel-based filler materials, respectively. TIG welding with and without PWHT was applied. Microstructural evaluation revealed martensitic transformation in HAZ, decarburization in repairs, and the presence of Laves phase. Ni-based filler welds showed greater inhomogeneity. Hardness profiles confirmed softening in P91 HAZ and improved uniformity with PWHT. Steel-based filler provided better compatibility, especially in repair scenarios. The results support the use of ER90S-B3 with PWHT for enhanced reliability. Our findings align with EPRI guidelines and standards for weld integrity in high-temperature piping applications. Full article

Owing to their lightness, high strength, flexibility, and design adaptability, cables have been extensively employed in architectural engineering. As cables are primary load-bearing components in long-span spatial structures, a profound understanding of their mechanical behavior is essential for structural design and safety evaluation. This paper presents a systematic review of the physical and mechanical properties of cables commonly used in building structures, offering reference data for key performance indicators. The mechanical responses and influencing factors pertaining to major types of cables—such as semi-parallel wire strand (SPWS), Galfan-coated steel strand (GSS), and full-locked coil wire rope (LCR)—are thoroughly examined. This review covers five critical aspects: fundamental cable characteristics, stress relaxation and creep, mechanical performance under high temperatures, corrosion-induced degradation, and post-fracture behavior after fatigue-induced wire breaks. It identifies key mechanical parameters, including elastic modulus, axial stiffness, bending stiffness, and the coefficient of thermal expansion. The degradation behavior of cables under high-temperature and corrosive conditions is examined, highlighting the superior corrosion resistance of LCR and GSS. Furthermore, the redistribution of stress and residual capacity after the rupturing of steel wires is elucidated. Based on recent studies, prospective directions are suggested to address current knowledge gaps and advance design strategies focused on durability and performance for forthcoming cable-supported structures. The long-term flexural performance of steel-concrete composite beams after creep is influenced by multiple factors such as the degree of shear connection, cross-sectional form, and boundary conditions. The engineering community has an ambiguous understanding of the coupling effects of these factors. To address this issue, this paper conducts systematic experimental research: six simply supported beams (three box-shaped, three I-shaped) and four continuous beams (two box-shaped, two I-shaped) were designed with three degrees of shear connection (0.57, 1.08, 1.53). These beams first underwent simulated creep tests (24 °C, 80% relative humidity, 10 kN load, 180 days), followed by monotonic bending tests. The results indicate: (1) A high degree of shear connection (1.53) reduces creep deflection by 15–20% compared to partial connection (0.57) and delays the initiation of interface slip to 30% of the ultimate load; (2) Box sections exhibit 10–15% lower creep deflection than I-sections, though both experience 40–60% stiffness reduction after creep; (3) Continuous beams show a 25% improvement in crack resistance in the negative moment region and a 50% increase in flexural capacity at mid-span compared to simply supported beams; (4) After creep, the elastic modulus of concrete decreases by 40–60% (inversely related to the degree of shear connection), with fully connected specimens retaining 55–61% of their strength, while partially connected specimens retain only 43–49%. This study quantifies the degradation patterns of concrete performance, clarifies the influence mechanisms of key structural factors, and provides theoretical and experimental support for the long-term performance design of composite beams. Shear connection design is crucial for mitigating creep effects. Full article

P92 martensitic heat-resistant steel is widely used in ultra-supercritical (USC) thermal power units due to its excellent creep resistance and high-temperature strength. However, prolonged exposure to high temperatures induces significant microstructural degradation, compromising mechanical properties and operational safety. This study investigates the evolution of microstructure and mechanical properties in P92 steel extracted from main steam pipelines after service durations of 30,000 h, 47,000 h, 56,000 h, 70,000 h, and 93,000 h. Comparative analyses of impact toughness, tensile strength, and creep strength were conducted and advanced characterization of SEM and TEM was used to investigate the microstructural evolution. The results reveal a progressive decline in mechanical properties with increasing service time. Specifically, impact toughness decreased by approximately 66.8%, room-temperature tensile strength reduced by 9.62%, and high-temperature tensile strength at 610 °C declined by 31.6%. Notably, the 105 hour creep rupture strength exhibited a 10.4% decrease compared to as-received material. This decline is attributed to microstructural changes including precipitate coarsening, martensite lath boundary degradation, dislocation reconfiguration, and severe grain coarsening. The coarsening of precipitates weakens their bonding with the matrix, while the widening of martensite laths reduces resistance to crack propagation and dislocation movement, jointly contributing to strength deterioration. Substantial time-dependent deformation and support failure in deep tunnels through water-rich red-bed soft rock present critical engineering challenges, yet the underlying mechanisms under hydro-mechanical coupling remain inadequately quantified. This study integrates wireless remote monitoring, laboratory testing, and theoretical analysis to investigate the stress-deformation behavior of surrounding rock and support structures. Results reveal that deformation evolves through four distinct stages as follows: sharp, slow, stable, and creep, with the creep stage—governed by pore-water pressure—accounting for over 40% of total displacement. Groundwater-induced clay mineral hydration and stress redistribution significantly weaken rock self-support capacity. Support elements exhibit degraded performance; rock bolts suffer interfacial bond failure, steel arches yield asymmetrically, and the secondary lining resists transmitted deformation pressure. A novel deformation rate-based failure criterion is proposed, revealing a progressive “local breakthrough-chain transmission–global instability” failure pathway. These findings provide a theoretical basis for stability control in deep buried tunnels under hydro-mechanical coupling. Full article

Sanicro 25 (X7NiCrWCuCoNb25-23-3-3-2) steel is specifically designed for use in superheater components within the latest generation of conventional power plants. These power plants operate under conditions often referred to as super-ultra-supercritical, with steam parameters that can reach up to 30 MPa and temperatures of 653 °C for fresh steam and 672 °C for reheated steam. While last-generation supercritical power plants still rely on fossil fuels, they represent a significant step forward in more sustainable energy production. The most sophisticated facilities of this kind can achieve thermodynamic efficiencies exceeding 47%. This study aimed to conduct a detailed analysis of the initial precipitation processes occurring in Sanicro 25 steel within the temperature range of 700–900 °C. The temperature of 700 °C corresponds to the operational conditions of this material, particularly in secondary steam superheaters in thermal power plants that operate under ultra-supercritical parameters. Understanding precipitation processes is crucial for optimizing mechanical performance, particularly in terms of long-term strength and creep resistance. To accurately assess the microstructural changes that occur during the early stages of service, a digital twin approach was employed, which included CALPHAD simulations and experimental heat treatments. Experimental annealing tests were conducted in air within the temperature range of 700–900 °C. Precipitation behavior was simulated using the Thermo-Calc 2025a with Dictra software package. The results from Prisma simulations correlated well with the experimental data related to the kinetics of phase transformations; however, it was noted that the predicted sizes of the precipitates were generally smaller than those observed in experiments. Additionally, computational limitations were encountered during some simulations due to the complexity arising from the numerous alloying elements present in Sanicro 25 steel. AISI 347H stainless steel is widely used in high-temperature environments due to its excellent creep strength and oxidation resistance; however, its corrosion performance remains highly sensitive to thermal oxidation, and the effects of thermal history on its passive film stability are not yet fully understood. This study addresses this knowledge gap by systematically investigating the influence of solution treatment on the corrosion and oxidation resistance of AISI 347H stainless steel. The specimens were subjected to solution heat treatment at 1050 °C, followed by air cooling, and then evaluated through electrochemical testing, high-temperature oxidation experiments at 550 °C, and multiscale surface characterization techniques. The solution treatment refined the austenitic microstructure by dissolving coarse Nb-rich precipitates, as confirmed by SEM and EBSD, and improved passive film integrity. The stabilizing effect of Nb also played a critical role in suppressing sensitization, thereby enhancing resistance to intergranular attack. Electrochemical measurements and EIS analysis revealed a lower corrosion current density and higher charge transfer resistance in the treated samples, indicating enhanced passivation behavior. ToF-SIMS depth profiling and oxide thickness analysis confirmed a slower parabolic oxide growth rate and reduced oxidation rate constant in the solution-treated condition. At 550 °C, oxidation was suppressed by the formation of compact, Cr-rich scales with dual-distributed Nb oxides, effectively limiting diffusion pathways and stabilizing the protective layer. These findings demonstrate that solution treatment is an effective strategy to improve the long-term corrosion and oxidation performance of AISI 347H stainless steel in harsh service environments. Epoxy Resin System (ERS) steel bridge pavement, which comprises a resin asphalt (RA) base layer and a modified asphalt wearing course, offers cost efficiency and rapid installation. However, the combined effects of traffic loads and environmental conditions pose significant challenges, requiring greater high-temperature stability than conventional pavements. The thermal sensitivity of resin materials and the use of conventional asphalt mixtures may weaken deformation resistance under elevated temperature conditions. This study investigates the thermal field distribution and high-temperature performance of ERS pavements under extreme conditions and explores temperature reduction strategies. A three-dimensional thermal field model developed using finite element analysis software analyzes interactions between the steel box girder and pavement layers. Based on simulation results, wheel tracking and dynamic creep tests confirm the superior performance of the RA05 mixture, with dynamic stability reaching 23,318 cycles/mm at 70 °C and a 2.1-fold improvement in rutting resistance in Stone Mastic Asphalt (SMA)-13 + RA05 composites. Model-driven optimization identifies that enhancing internal airflow within the steel box girder is possible without compromising its structural integrity. The cooling effect is particularly significant when the internal airflow aligns with ambient wind speeds (open-girder configuration). Surface peak temperatures can be reduced by up to 20 °C and high-temperature durations can be shortened by 3–7 h. Full article

Fire safety design for steel beams is crucial in the construction of steel structures. However, there remains a significant gap in the fire resistance testing of insulated steel beams. This study focuses on full-scale experimental research examining the fire resistance performance of steel beams with varying fire protection methods, cross-sectional dimensions, and heating curves. During the tests, the furnace temperature, specimen temperature, and deflection at mid-span were measured. The test results indicated that specimens mainly failed in lateral–torsional buckling. Additionally, a markedly non-uniform temperature distribution was observed across the cross-section, and the predictions made by GB 51249-2017 were found to be unsafe. The use of fiber cement board for fire protection may be ineffective, as it tends to become brittle at elevated temperatures, making it susceptible to breakage and detachment when the beams begin to bend. Furthermore, due to potential creep deformation, specimens subjected to longer heating durations exhibited lower critical temperatures compared to those with shorter heating durations. Finally, the design method outlined in BS EN 1993-1-2 and ANSI/AISC 360-22 was evaluated against the test results, indicating an accurate prediction of these methods for specimens with shorter heating durations, but an unconservative prediction for specimens with longer heating durations due to ignorance of creep deformation. Oxide dispersion-strengthened (ODS) steels are emerging as leading candidate materials for next-generation nuclear reactor components due to their exceptional resistance to creep, fatigue, and irradiation, combined with high strength at elevated temperatures. This paper investigates the microstructural mechanisms underpinning these superior properties, with a particular focus on the critical role of nano-oxides in enhancing performance. Various manufacturing techniques, including powder metallurgy and additive manufacturing, are reviewed to assess their impact on the structural and mechanical properties of ODS steels. Recent case studies on their application in nuclear environments highlight the potential of ODS steels to significantly extend component longevity without necessitating major reactor redesigns. Nevertheless, further research is necessary to assess their reliability under extreme environmental conditions and to determine optimal, scalable manufacturing processes for large-scale production.
