Non-food geographical indications (GIs) are emerging as strategic policy instruments in the European Union after Regulation (EU) 2023/2411 extended protection to craft and industrial products. While the literature on agri-food GIs is extensive, empirical and comparative evidence on non-food GIs remains scarce and fragmented. This study addresses this gap by constructing a harmonised dataset, combining 132 registered and 380 potential non-food GIs identified by EUIPO (512 in total across the EU). Using secondary institutional data, descriptive and comparative statistics, and a hierarchical clustering (Ward, squared Euclidean distance) on normalised indicators total GIs, GIs per million inhabitants (GI/POP), and GIs per € billion of GDP (GI/GDP), the analysis identifies three country typologies differing by scale and intensity. Results reveal a strong geographical concentration in Southern Europe but also unexpectedly high intensity in smaller or mid-sized economies such as Portugal, Cyprus, and Slovenia. A forward-looking scenario analysis based on Cost of Non-Europe (CoNE) estimates suggests that the full implementation of the new Regulation could generate 284,000–338,000 new jobs and € 37–50 billion in additional intra-EU trade. The study contributes to EU policy debates by introducing comparative indicators (GI/POP, GI/GDP) as monitoring tools for evidence-based policymaking and by highlighting the role of non-food GIs as hybrid institutions connecting industrial competitiveness, cultural identity, and sustainability transitions. Bioavailable fractions of particulate-bound trace elements are key determinants of inhalation toxicity, yet air-quality assessments typically rely on total metal concentrations, which may underestimate health risks. This study integrates the exchangeable (F1) and reducible (F2) fractions of trace elements in fine (PM2.5) and coarse (PM10) particulate matter with multi-criteria decision-making (TOPSIS) and similarity-based classification (Czekanowski’s method). Archival weekly-integrated samples from the summer season were collected at eight industrially influenced sites in southern Poland. Sequential extraction (F1–F2) and ICP-MS were applied to quantify concentrations of cadmium, cobalt, chromium, nickel, and lead in PM2.5 and PM10. Aggregated hazard values were then derived with TOPSIS, and site similarity was explored using Czekanowski’s reordered distance matrices. Regulatory targets for cadmium and nickel, and the limit for lead in PM10 were not exceeded, but F1/F2 profiles revealed pronounced site-to-site differences in potential mobility that were not evident from total concentrations. Rankings were consistent across size fractions, with site P1 exhibiting the lowest hazard indices and P8 the highest, while mid-rank sites formed reproducible similarity clusters. The proposed chemical-fractionation and multivariate framework provides a reproducible screening tool for multi-element exposure, complementing compliance checks and supporting prioritisation of sites for targeted investigation and environmental management. In the sustainability context, bioavailability-based indicators strengthen air-quality assessment by linking monitoring data with health-relevant and cost-effective management strategies, supporting efficient resource allocation and reducing exposure in vulnerable populations. Introduction: Multiple sclerosis (MS) is a chronic neurodegenerative disease that entails high costs, progressive disability, and reduced quality of life (QoL). Telerehabilitation (TR), supported by new technologies, is emerging as an alternative or complement to in-person rehabilitation, potentially lowering socioeconomic impact and improving QoL. Aim: The objective of this study was to evaluate the effect of TR on the QoL of people with MS compared with in-person rehabilitation or no intervention. Materials and methods: A systematic review of randomized clinical trials was conducted (March–May 2025) following PRISMA guidelines. Searches were run in the PubMed-Medline, EMBASE, PEDro, Web of Science, and Dialnet databases. Methodological quality was assessed with the CASP scale, risk of bias with the Risk of Bias 2 tool, and evidence level and grade of recommendation with the Oxford Classification. The protocol was registered in PROSPERO (CRD420251110353). Results: Of the 151 articles initially found, 12 RCTs (598 total patients) met the inclusion criteria. Interventions included (a) four studies employing video-controlled exercise (one involving Pilates to improve fitness, another involving exercise to improve fatigue and general health, and two using exercises focused on the pelvic floor muscles); (b) three studies using a monitoring app to improve manual dexterity, symptom control, and increased physical activity; (c) two studies implementing an augmented reality system to treat cognitive deficits and sexual disorders, respectively; (d) one platform with a virtual reality headset for motor and cognitive training; (e) one study focusing on video-controlled motor imagery, along with the use of a pain management app; (f) a final study addressing cognitive training and pain reduction. Studies used eight different scales to assess QoL, finding similar improvements between groups in eight of the trials and statistically significant improvements in favor of TR in four. The included trials were of good methodological quality, with a moderate-to-low risk of bias and good levels of evidence and grades of recommendation. Conclusions: TR was more effective in improving the QoL of people with MS than no intervention, was as effective as in-person treatment in patients with EDSS ≤ 6, and appeared to be more effective than in-person intervention in patients with EDSS between 5.5 and 7.5 in terms of QoL. It may also eliminate some common barriers to accessing such treatments. Full article

Social farming combines agricultural, social, and healthcare functions, and Animal-Assisted Interventions (AAIs) are increasingly being applied within this framework. Despite their potential, cattle are excluded from Italian guidelines and rarely studied. This pilot study explored the feasibility, effects, and economic sustainability of cow-assisted interventions within social farming in Umbria, Italy. It represents an original and innovative contribution, drawing attention to the therapeutic potential of the human–cow relationship. The study presents an experimental cow therapy protocol and proposes behavioral monitoring tools designed both for people with different disabilities and for the animals involved. Four Red Pied Valdostana cows were involved in structured sessions with three groups: adolescents removed from families, young adults with mental health disorders, and individuals with eating disorders. Activities included observation, feeding, grooming, problem solving, and leading. Human outcomes were assessed regarding emotional, relational, and behavioral dimensions, and animal welfare was continuously monitored. A cost analysis was also conducted for Animal-Assisted Activity (AAA), Animal-Assisted Education (AAE), and Animal-Assisted Therapy (AAT). Participants reported improved self-esteem, emotional expression, and social interaction; the eating disorder group showed greater openness toward dairy consumption. Animal welfare remained stable with high tolerance to handling. Costs were driven mainly by professional staff rather than animal care, with average hourly costs of €74.51 (AAA), €144.99 (AAE), and €172.41 (AAT). The comparative analysis demonstrates a clear trade-off: as the intervention shifts from recreational (AAA) to educational (AAE) and finally to therapeutic (AAT), the financial investment increases in parallel with the level of professionalization, personalization, and expected clinical outcomes. Cow-assisted interventions proved to be safe, feasible, and beneficial, supporting their potential inclusion in Italian guidelines on AAIs. Full article

Industrial electric drives account for a dominant share of electricity consumption in manufacturing, making their optimal configuration a critical factor for both sustainability and cost reduction. Traditional design approaches based on prototyping and empirical testing are often costly and insufficient for systematically exploring alternative configurations. This study introduces an integrated computational framework that combines digital twin (DT) modeling and virtual commissioning (VC) to enable energy-aware configuration of industrial electric drive systems at early design stages. The methodology employs parameterized component models derived from manufacturer catalog data, implemented in a commercial simulation environment and integrated into an industrial-grade VC platform. Validation is performed on two conveyor-based testbeds, enabling systematic comparison of simulation outputs with physical measurements. The results demonstrate predictive accuracy sufficient to quantify trade-offs in energy consumption, losses, and efficiency across different vendor solutions. Case studies involving belt and strap conveyors highlighted how the framework supports vendor-neutral decision making, revealing nonintuitive optimization trade-offs between minimizing energy consumption and maximizing efficiency. The proposed framework advances sustainable automation by embedding energy analysis directly into commissioning workflows, offering reproducible, scalable, and cross-domain applicability. Its modular design supports transfer to sectors such as renewable energy, transportation, and biomedical mechatronics, where energy efficiency is equally decisive. Full article

In this study, the effects of batch and continuous grinding on the ceramic floor tile body were investigated in terms of cost, capacity, and technical aspects. In batch milling, a changing speed during grinding was more efficient than a constant speed. Capacity and energy consumption increased as the mill rotation speed increased in continuous grinding. Specific energy consumptions were measured as 36 kW/ton and 43.1 kW/ton, with 1.6 ton/h and 8.375 t/h capacities. Additionally, d10, d50, and d90 values for ground ceramic floor tile bodies were determined to be 2.5, 9.5, and 47.2 µm and 2.5, 9.4, and 48.1 µm for batch and continuous grinding, respectively. No significant difference was observed in the color and shrinkage values, while water absorptions were calculated to be 1.1% and 0.3% as sintering properties for batch and continuous methods, respectively. In the phase analysis of a sintered body prepared using the continuous method, mullite and quartz were observed, while microcline was also analyzed differently from such minerals for the batch one. Structural changes, surface morphology, and roughness were also interpreted by DTA/TG, SEM, and AFM analysis. The presence of plastic clay minerals during the grinding process in batch milling caused non-plastic raw materials not to be ground sufficiently, and sintering characteristics changed. Full article

Borehole sealing materials have drawn significant research attention for their applications in mine disaster prevention, efficient utilization of coalbed methane resources and green mine construction. However, it is still an enormous challenge to simultaneously achieve sealing materials with lower material consumption, lower expense, and lower labor intensity for high-performance long-term borehole sealing. Meanwhile, drilling cuttings (DC) possess large production amounts, low granularity, a large workload for cleaning out the alley, high labor intensity, and high transportation cost. Herein, a composite with universal applicability to DC has been developed, which can be combined with different DC to produce a low-cost sealing material with adjustable strength, fulfilling the sealing requirements of various boreholes. The properties of the sealing material can be adjusted as required by regulating the water/cement ratio and DC content to meet the sealing requirements of different boreholes. Consequently, the DC-derived materials, featuring adjustable strengths and lower usage, can reduce cement usage, material costs, and labor intensity dramatically, displaying great promise in high-performance borehole sealing, coalbed methane extraction and utilization, timely mining waste reutilization, gas disaster prevention, and green mine construction. The aim of this study was to analyze international differences in online consumer behavior. The analysis was carried out on a sample of 763 participants from the countries of Spain, France, Poland and Russia. Online consumer behavior was examined from the perspective of seven dimensions: shipping-related concerns and preferences, price sensitivity and perceived cost advantage, quality perception, security concerns, time-related benefits, availability and quality of information, and shopping service satisfaction. Data were verified using Average inter-item correlation, the Shapiro–Wilk test and Levene Statistic. Subsequently, Welch’s ANOVA and one-way ANOVA and the Games–Howell and Tukey HSD post hoc tests were applied. Statistically significant differences were fully identified in all examined dimensions. The largest differences were recorded in price sensitivity, shipping-related concerns and security concerns. The effect measurements, in addition to ANOVA and post hoc tests, confirm the significance of these differences. National context, shaped by culture, institutional trust and digital infrastructure, continues to influence online consumer behavior. The strategies that the businesses should adopt should focus on approaches that are tailor-made for a specific market. This means that adapting pricing models, strengthening trust (e.g., through secure payments and strengthening safe return policies), and adapting delivery options to local preferences can lead to improved customer satisfaction in cross-border e-commerce. This study investigates the capacity of green and brown algae to sustainably remove oxyanions from contaminated waters, highlighting their cost-effectiveness. Often considered biomass waste and contributors to organic contamination, these algae can be used as effective biosorbents, aligning with circular economy principles and sustainable waste management. Various pre-treatments were tested to enhance adsorption capacity, with mixed results regarding their effectiveness. The focus then shifted to the use of Cladophora sericea algae for the uptake and removal of selenium species, specifically selenite (Se(IV)) and selenate (Se(VI)). The effects of different operational parameters on oxyanion uptake by algae were studied in batch mode. The assessments were conducted on a single-component and a multi-component synthetic matrix. The results indicate that pH significantly impacts biosorption, with equilibrium achieved in 90 min. Both pseudo-first-order and pseudo-second-order models provided a good fit to the experimental data. The algae’s retention capacity for selenium remained largely unaffected by the presence of other anions, a key advantage for application in complex real effluent matrices. Kinetic studies performed under different values of initial pollutant concentration and biosorbent mass indicate a biosorbed amount at an equilibrium of 570 µg g−1. Full article

Background: The rising prevalence of neurodegenerative conditions such as dementia underscores the impact of population aging. Consequently, long-term care needs have increased and are often met by family members through informal caregiving, thereby supporting formal care systems by reducing associated costs. These caregivers face physical and mental health challenges, raising concerns about their psychological well-being and prompting interest in both clinical and psychosocial research. Ryff’s eudaimonic model offers a robust framework for the assessment of psychological well-being; yet, in Romania, data on this population segment remain limited. Objective: This study aimed to compare the psychological well-being of Romanian dementia family caregivers with a reference population from the Romanian adaptation of the 54-item Ryff Psychological Well-Being Scale, and to explore how sociodemographic characteristics relate to relevant differences across well-being dimensions. Methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted among 70 Romanian family caregivers recruited from a single clinical hospital in Bucharest, Romania. Caregivers completed the 54-item Ryff Scale (Romanian adaptation), and scores were compared to reference values using one-sample t-tests with bootstrap confidence intervals. The most relevant dimension (purpose in life) was dichotomized and further examined in relation to sociodemographic and caregiving variables using Chi-squared and Fisher’s exact tests. Results: Caregivers reported significantly lower scores compared to the reference population in purpose in life (p < 0.001, d = −1.01), personal growth (p < 0.001, d = −0.91), and positive relations (p = 0.01, d = −0.30). The most pronounced deficit was observed in purpose in life, with 85.7% of caregivers scoring below the reference mean. This dimension was further examined in relation to caregiver characteristics. Retirement status showed a statistically significant association with Purpose in Life, with retired caregivers more likely to report lower scores (χ2 (1) = 4.04, p = 0.04), supported by the likelihood ratio test (p = 0.01) and a linear trend (p = 0.05). Additional marginal associations were found for household income (p = 0.14) and whether the patient slept in a separate room (p = 0.15), suggesting possible links between caregiver well-being and economic or environmental conditions. Conclusions: The study findings highlight notable psychological vulnerabilities among Romanian dementia caregivers, particularly in purpose in life and personal growth. Associations with structural and contextual factors such as retirement status, income, and caregiving environment suggest that caregiver well-being is shaped by broader socioeconomic conditions. While the magnitude of these deficits may be underestimated due to elevated stress levels in the reference group, the findings underscore the need for targeted clinical, social, and policy-level interventions aimed at strengthening existential meaning and personal development in culturally specific settings. This study presents an analysis of the condition of street lighting based on a selected typical installation in one of the 1459 rural communes in Poland. The analysis was carried out on the basis of publicly available statistical data, local government reports, and information contained in national and European strategic documents. During the analysis, numerous irregularities and differences in the quality and energy efficiency of the lighting infrastructure were indicated. It was found that outdated sodium luminaires with high energy consumption, low durability, and limited luminous efficacy are used in many cases, which generates significant operating costs and negatively affects the environment. The authors emphasize that a lack of regular and professional lighting audits leads to the suboptimal use of energy resources, an insufficient level of road safety, and failure to adapt lighting to current technical standards and the needs of road users. A lighting audit is a key tool for diagnosing the technical condition, efficiency, and compliance of installations with relevant regulations and recommendations. It also allows for the identification of potential savings and determining the directions of modernization and implementation of energy-saving technologies, such as LED luminaires and intelligent control systems.The presented analysis demonstrates that energy audits are an effective tool for confirming efficiency improvements and enhancing visual safety conditions through better compliance with photometric standards (luminance, lighting uniformity). In situ leaching represents an efficient and safe method for uranium mining, where a suboptimal well flow rate distribution leads to solution imbalances between wells, forming stagnant zones that increase operational costs. This study examines a real technological block from the Budenovskoye deposit, applying reactive transport modeling to optimize well flow rates and reduce operational time and reagent consumption. A reactive transport model was developed based on mass conservation and Darcy’s laws coupled with chemical kinetics describing sulfuric acid interactions with uranium minerals (UO2 and UO3). The model simulated a technological block with 4 production and 18 injection wells arranged in hexagonal cells over 511–542 days to achieve 90% uranium recovery. Six approaches for well flow rate redistribution were compared, based on different weighting factor calculation methods: advanced traditional, linear distance, squared distance, quadrilateral area, and two streamline-based approaches utilizing the minimum and average time of flight. The squared distance method achieved the highest efficiency, reducing operational costs by 5.7% through improved flow redistribution. The streamline-based methods performed comparably and offer potential advantages for heterogeneous conditions by automatically identifying hydraulic connections. The reactive transport modeling approach successfully demonstrated that multi-criteria optimization methods can improve ISL efficiency by 3.9%–5.7% while reducing operational costs. Full article

Electronic health records (EHRs) are typically stored in relational databases, making them difficult to query for nontechnical users, especially under privacy constraints. We evaluate two practical clinical NLP workflows, natural language to SQL (NL2SQL) for EHR querying and retrieval-augmented generation for clinical question answering (RAG-QA), with a focus on privacy-preserving deployment. We benchmark nine large language models, spanning open-weight options (DeepSeek V3/V3.1, Llama-3.3-70B, Qwen2.5-32B, Mixtral-8 × 22B, BioMistral-7B, and GPT-OSS-20B) and proprietary APIs (GPT-4o and GPT-5). The models were chosen to represent a diverse cross-section spanning sparse MoE, dense general-purpose, domain-adapted, and proprietary LLMs. On MIMICSQL (27,000 generations; nine models × three runs), the best NL2SQL execution accuracy (EX) is 66.1% (GPT-4o), followed by 64.6% (GPT-5). Among open-weight models, DeepSeek V3.1 reaches 59.8% EX, while DeepSeek V3 reaches 58.8%, with Llama-3.3-70B at 54.5% and BioMistral-7B achieving only 11.8%, underscoring a persistent gap relative to general-domain benchmarks. We introduce SQL-EC, a deterministic SQL error-classification framework with adjudication, revealing string mismatches as the dominant failure (86.3%), followed by query-join misinterpretations (49.7%), while incorrect aggregation-function usage accounts for only 6.7%. This highlights lexical/ontology grounding as the key bottleneck for NL2SQL in the biomedical domain. For RAG-QA, evaluated on 100 synthetic patient records across 20 questions (54,000 reference–generation pairs; three runs), BLEU and ROUGE-L fluctuate more strongly across models, whereas BERTScore remains high on most, with DeepSeek V3.1 and GPT-4o among the top performers; pairwise t-tests confirm that significant differences were observed among the LLMs. Cost–performance analysis based on measured token usage shows per-query costs ranging from USD 0.000285 (GPT-OSS-20B) to USD 0.005918 (GPT-4o); DeepSeek V3.1 offers the best open-weight cost–accuracy trade-off, and GPT-5 provides a balanced API alternative. Overall, the privacy-conscious RAG-QA attains strong semantic fidelity, whereas the clinical NL2SQL remains brittle under lexical variation. SQL-EC pinpoints actionable failure modes, motivating ontology-aware normalization and schema-linked prompting for robust clinical querying. Full article

Objectives: Hearing aids (HAs) are the most common intervention recommended for hearing loss (HL). Many adults with HL do not seek HA rehabilitation. Several studies have attempted to identify barriers and facilitators to using HAs. Different bureaucratic processes for acquiring HAs may lead to different barriers and facilitators. In addition, studies have not yet explored the factors influencing compliance with a recommendation for an HA consultation. This study focuses on the stage prior to consultation in a context where HAs are heavily subsidized. Methods: 148 patients who had undergone a hearing test during 2022 at Hadassah University Medical Center and received a recommendation to undergo a hearing aid consultation were contacted for a telephone survey. Seventy-two adults, 48 male and 24 female, aged 25–85 years, with HL ranging from slight to profound, responded to a telephone questionnaire. The questionnaire, based on two previously published English questionnaires and translated and adapted into Hebrew, was used to assess the main reasons a person did or did not comply with the recommendation to pursue an HA consultation. Results: HL was more severe in those who sought hearing rehabilitation. The main reasons for seeking hearing rehabilitation are the need and desire to hear better and pressure from others. The foremost reasons for not pursuing hearing rehabilitation are feeling that there is currently no need, esthetics, lack of time, and self-consciousness. No significant gender- or age-based differences were found. Conclusions: There are additional barriers to seeking HAs aside from cost and accessibility. Understanding the reasons for avoidance of hearing rehabilitation may help in developing strategies that encourage people to seek hearing rehabilitation and use HAs when the need exists. Full article

This study evaluates the feasibility of employing rainwater as an alternative feedstock for hydrogen production via electrolysis. While conventional systems typically rely on high-purity water—such as deionized or distilled variants—these can be cost-prohibitive and environmentally intensive. Rainwater, being naturally available and minimally treated, presents a potential sustainable alternative. In this work, a series of comparative experiments was conducted using a proton exchange membrane electrolyzer system operating with both deionized water and rainwater collected from different Austrian locations. The chemical composition of rainwater samples was assessed through inductively coupled plasma, ion chromatography and visual rapid tests to identify impurities and ionic profiles. The electrolyzer’s performance was evaluated under equivalent operating conditions. Results indicate that rainwater, in some cases, yielded comparable or marginally superior efficiency compared to deionized water, attributed to its inherent ionic content. The study also examines the operational risks linked to trace contaminants and explores possible strategies for their mitigation. Full article
