Openings in two-way reinforced concrete (RC) slabs are frequently incorporated for architectural and functional purposes, such as providing pathways for mechanical, electrical, and plumbing services. While necessary, these openings can significantly compromise the structural performance of slabs, particularly by reducing their capacity to resist punching shear, an effect that is especially critical when the openings are located near column–slab connections. This paper provides a detailed review of the existing research, examining how various opening parameters such as their size, shape, and position affect key structural performance metrics including their stiffness, ductility, and failure modes. The findings highlight that opening geometry is a major determinant of a slab’s overall behavior. Notably, the proximity of openings to column faces is identified as a critical factor that can substantially influence the extent of strength degradation and failure mechanisms. Furthermore, this review identifies a significant research gap concerning the behavior of slabs with openings under non-standard loading conditions, such as seismic activity, blasts, and impact loads. It also emphasizes the need for further investigation into the long-term performance of such slabs under adverse environmental influences, including elevated temperatures, corrosion, and material degradation. By consolidating the current knowledge and identifying unresolved challenges, this review aims to guide engineers and researchers in developing more robust design strategies and performance-based solutions for RC slabs with openings, ultimately contributing to safer and more resilient structural systems. The quality of water in households can be affected by plumbing design and materials, water usage patterns, and source water quality characteristics. These factors influence stagnation duration, disinfection residuals, metal release, and microbial activity. In particular, stagnation can degrade water quality and increase lead release from lead service lines. This study employs numerical modeling to assess how combined corrosion control and flushing strategies affect lead levels in household taps with lead service lines under reduced water use. To estimate potential health risks, the U.S. EPA model is used to predict the percentage of children likely to exceed safe blood lead levels. Lead exceedances are assessed based on various regulatory requirements. Results show that exceedances at the kitchen tap range from 3 to 74% of usage time for the 5 µg/L standard, and from 0 to 49% for the 10 µg/L threshold, across different scenarios. Implementing corrosion control treatment in combination with periodic flushing proves effective in lowering lead levels under the studied low-consumption scenarios. Under these conditions, the combined strategy limits lead exceedances above 5 µg/L to only 3% of usage time, with none above 10 µg/L. This demonstrates its value as a practical short-term strategy for households awaiting full pipe replacement. Targeted flushing before peak water use reduces the median time that water remains stagnant in household pipes from 8 to 3 h at the kitchen tap under low-demand conditions. Finally, the risk model indicates that the combined approach can reduce the predicted percentage of children with blood lead levels exceeding 5 μg/dL from 61 to 6% under low water demand. The aim of this paper is to present the results of an experimental and numerical investigation into the degradation of reinforced concrete (RC) specimens subjected to an accelerated corrosion process using impressed current in the presence of chloride ions. The corrosion of the rebars was carried out using three current densities (50, 100, and 200 µA/cm2) and various exposure times. The experimental results characterised the internal degradation of the RC specimens through measurement of the corrosion product thicknesses at the steel–concrete interface; the widths, lengths and orientations of internal concrete cracks; and the external concrete crack widths. In addition, numerical modelling of the corroded RC specimens was conducted to describe the crack patterns. The comparison between the experimental and numerical results demonstrated a high degree of correlation, providing insights into the degradation process of RC specimens due to corrosion. Full article

The operation of heavy-haul railway trains with large loads results in significant cracking issues in reinforced concrete beams. Atmospheric carbon dioxide, oxygen, and moisture from the atmosphere penetrate into the beam interior through these cracks, accelerating the carbonation of the concrete and the corrosion of the steel bars. The rust-induced expansion of steel bars further exacerbates the cracking of the beam. The interaction between environmental factors and beam cracks leads to a rapid decline in the durability of the beam. To address this issue, a multi-physics field coupling durability assessment method was proposed, considering concrete beam cracking, concrete carbonation, and steel bar corrosion. The interaction among these three factors is achieved through sequential coupling, using crack width, carbonation passivation time, and steel bar corrosion rate as interaction parameters. Using this method, the deterioration morphology and stiffness degradation laws of 8 m reinforced concrete beams under different load conditions, including those of heavy and light trains in heavy-haul railways, are compared and assessed. The analysis reveals that within a 100-year service cycle, the maximum relative stiffness reduction for beams on the heavy train line is 20.0%, whereas for the light train line, it is only 7.4%. The degree of structural stiffness degradation is closely related to operational load levels, and beam cracking plays a critical role in this difference. Full article

Atmospheric corrosion significantly impacts infrastructure worldwide, with traditional assessment methods being time-intensive and costly. This study developed a comprehensive machine learning framework for predicting atmospheric corrosion rates using environmental and material parameters. Three regression models (Linear Regression, Random Forest, and Gradient Boosting) were trained on a scientifically informed synthetic dataset incorporating established corrosion principles from ISO 9223 standards and peer-reviewed literature. The Gradient Boosting model achieved superior performance with cross-validated R2 = 0.835 ± 0.024 and RMSE = 98.99 ± 16.62 μm/year, significantly outperforming the Random Forest (p < 0.001) and Linear Regression approaches. Feature importance analysis revealed the copper content (30%), exposure time (20%), and chloride deposition (15%) as primary predictors, consistent with the established principles of corrosion science. Model diagnostics demonstrated excellent predictive accuracy (R2 = 0.863) with normally distributed residuals and homoscedastic variance patterns. This methodology provides a systematic framework for ML-based corrosion prediction, with significant implications for protective coating design, material selection, and infrastructure risk assessment, pending comprehensive experimental validation. Corrosion fatigue damage significantly affects the long-term service of marine platforms such as propellers. Fatigue testing of pre-corrosion specimens is essential for understanding damage mechanisms and accurately predicting fatigue life. However, traditional seawater-based tests are time-consuming and yield inconsistent results, making them unsuitable for rapid evaluation of newly developed equipment. This study proposes an accelerated corrosion testing method for ZCuAl8Mn13Fe3Ni2 nickel–aluminum bronze, simulating the marine full immersion zone by increasing temperature, adding H2O2, reducing the solution pH, and preparing the special solution. Coupled with the fatigue test of pre-corrosion specimens, the corrosion damage characteristics and their influence on fatigue performance were analyzed. A numerical simulation method was developed to predict the fatigue life of pre-corrosion specimens, showing an average error of 13.82%. The S–N curves under different pre-corrosion cycles were also established. The research results show that using the test solution of 0.6 mol/L NaCl + 0.1 mol/L H3PO4-NaH2PO4 buffer solution + 1.0 mol/L H2O2 + 0.1 mL/500 mL concentrated hydrochloric acid for corrosion acceleration testing shows good corrosion acceleration. Moreover, the test methods ensure accuracy and reliability of the fatigue behavior evaluation of pre-corrosion specimens of the structure under actual service environments, offering a robust foundation for the material selection, corrosion resistance evaluation, and fatigue life prediction of marine structural components. FeCrAl exhibits excellent resistance to high temperatures, corrosion, and irradiation, making it a prime candidate material for accident-tolerant fuel (ATF) cladding. This study investigates the high-temperature creep behavior of FeCrAl alloys with grain sizes of 12.0 μm and 9.9 μm under temperatures ranging from 450 °C to 650 °C and applied stresses between 75 and 200 MPa. The texture, grain morphology, grain orientation, and dislocation density of FeCrAl were characterized by electron backscatter diffraction (EBSD). The results indicate that temperature, applied stress, and grain size are the primary factors governing high-temperature creep behavior. The material texture showed no significant difference before and after creep. Large grains tend to engulf smaller ones during the creep process at lower temperatures and stresses, reducing the proportion of low-angle grain boundaries (LAGBs). In contrast, at higher temperatures or under higher stress, dislocations proliferate within grains, leading to a significant increase in the number of LAGBs. As the applied stress increases, the dominant creep mechanism tends to convert from grain boundary sliding to dislocation motion. Moreover, higher temperatures or smaller grain sizes lower the critical stress required to activate dislocation motion and significantly increase dislocation density, severely degrading the creep resistance. This study systematically investigated the corrosion evolution and protective mechanisms of X80 pipeline steel in Xinjiang’s saline soil environments under freeze–thaw cycling conditions. Combining regional soil characterization with laboratory-constructed corrosion systems, we employed electrochemical impedance spectroscopy, potentiodynamic polarization, and surface analytical techniques to quantify temporal–spatial corrosion behavior across 30 freeze–thaw cycles. Experimental results revealed a distinctive corrosion resistance pattern: initial improvement (cycles 1–10) attributed to protective oxide layer formation, followed by accelerated degradation (cycles 10–30) due to microcrack propagation and chloride accumulation. Synchrotron X-ray diffraction analyses identified sulfate–chloride ion synergism as the primary driver of localized corrosion disparities in heterogeneous soil matrices. A comparative evaluation of asphalt-coated specimens demonstrated a 62%–89% corrosion rate reduction, with effectiveness directly correlating with coating integrity and thickness (200–500 μm range). Molecular dynamics simulations using Materials Studio revealed atomic-scale ion transport dynamics at coating–substrate interfaces, showing preferential Cl permeation through coating defects. These multiscale findings establish quantitative relationships between environmental stressors, coating parameters, and corrosion kinetics, providing a mechanistic framework for optimizing protective coatings in cold-region pipeline applications. This study investigates the long-term performance of flexible anti-collision rings after 12 years of service on the Xiangshan Port Highway Bridge. Stepwise loading–unloading tests at multiple loading rates (0.8–80 mm/s) were performed on the anti-collision rings, with full-field strain measurement via digital image correlation (DIC) technology. The results show that: The mechanical response of the anti-collision ring shows significant asymmetric tension–compression, with the tensile peak force being 6.8 times that of compression. A modified Johnson–Cook model was developed to accurately characterize the tension–compression force–displacement behavior across varying strain rates (0.001–0.1 s−1). The DIC full-field strain analysis reveals that the clamping fixture significantly influences the tensile deformation mode of the anti-collision ring by constraining its inner wall movement, thereby altering strain distribution patterns. Despite exhibiting a corrosion gradient from severe underwater degradation to minimal surface weathering, all tested rings demonstrated consistent mechanical performance, verifying the robust protective capability of the rubber coating in marine service conditions. Additive manufacturing (AM) has emerged as a transformative technology in dentistry, enabling the production of patient-specific dental applications with reduced costs and fabrication times. Despite the growth of applications, a consolidated understanding of current 3D printing technologies, materials, and performance in dental settings remains fragmented. Here, we perform a Systematic Literature Review (SLR) using the PRISMA protocol, retrieving 19 closely related primary studies. The evidence is synthesized across three axes: application domain, AM technology, and critical quality parameters. Dental restorations, prosthetics, crowns, and implants are the most common applications, while fused deposition modeling, stereolithography, digital light processing, selective laser sintering, and laser-directed energy deposition are the most used technologies. AM materials include polymers, metals, and emerging biomaterials. Key quality determinants include dimensional accuracy, wear and corrosion resistance, and photosensitivity. Notably, biocompatibility and cytotoxicity remain underexplored yet critical factors for ensuring long-term clinical safety. The evidence also suggests a lack of in vivo studies, insufficient tribological and microbiological testing, including limited data degradation pathways of AM materials under oral conditions. Understanding that there are disconnects between the realization of the clinical and the economic benefits of 3D printing in dentistry, future research requires standardized testing frameworks and long-term biocompatibility validation. Tribological processes in extreme environments pose serious material challenges, requiring coatings that resist both wear and corrosion. This review summarizes recent advances in protective coatings engineered for extreme environments such as high temperatures, chemically aggressive media, and high-pressure and abrasive domains, as well as cryogenic and space applications. A comprehensive overview of promising coating materials is provided, including ceramic-based coatings, metallic and alloy coatings, and polymer and composite systems, as well as nanostructured and multilayered architectures. These materials are deployed using advanced coating technologies such as thermal spraying (plasma spray, high-velocity oxygen fuel (HVOF), and cold spray), chemical and physical vapor deposition (CVD and PVD), electrochemical methods (electrodeposition), additive manufacturing, and in situ coating approaches. Key degradation mechanisms such as adhesive and abrasive wear, oxidation, hot corrosion, stress corrosion cracking, and tribocorrosion are examined with coating performance. The review also explores application-specific needs in aerospace, marine, energy, biomedical, and mining sectors operating in aggressive physiological environments. Emerging trends in the field are highlighted, including self-healing and smart coatings, environmentally friendly coating technologies, functionally graded and nanostructured coatings, and the integration of machine learning in coating design and optimization. Finally, the review addresses broader considerations such as scalability, cost-effectiveness, long-term durability, maintenance requirements, and environmental regulations. This comprehensive analysis aims to synthesize current knowledge while identifying future directions for innovation in protective coatings for extreme environments. Full article

This study focuses on the optimization of valve assemblies in downhole rod pumping units (DRPUs), which remain the predominant artificial lift technology in oil production worldwide. The research addresses the critical issue of premature failures in DRPUs caused by leakage in valve pairs, i.e., a problem that accounts for approximately 15% of all failures, as identified in a statistical analysis of the 2022 operational data from the Uzen oilfield in Kazakhstan. The leakage is primarily attributed to the accumulation of mechanical impurities and paraffin deposits between the valve ball and seat, leading to concentrated surface wear and compromised sealing. To mitigate this issue, a novel valve assembly design was developed featuring a flow turbulizer positioned beneath the valve seat. The turbulizer generates controlled vortex motion in the fluid flow, which increases the rotational frequency of the valve ball during operation. This motion promotes more uniform wear across the contact surfaces and reduces the risk of localized degradation. The turbulizers were manufactured using additive FDM technology, and several design variants were tested in a full-scale laboratory setup simulating downhole conditions. Experimental results revealed that the most effective configuration was a spiral plate turbulizer with a 7.5 mm width, installed without axis deviation from the vertical, which achieved the highest ball rotation frequency and enhanced lapping effect between the ball and the seat. Subsequent field trials using valves with duralumin-based turbulizers demonstrated increased operational lifespans compared to standard valves, confirming the viability of the proposed solution. However, cases of abrasive wear were observed under conditions of high mechanical impurity concentration, indicating the need for more durable materials. To address this, the study recommends transitioning to 316 L stainless steel for turbulizer fabrication due to its superior tensile strength, corrosion resistance, and wear resistance. Implementing this design improvement can significantly reduce maintenance intervals, improve pump reliability, and lower operating costs in mature oilfields with high water cut and solid content. The findings of this research contribute to the broader efforts in petroleum engineering to enhance the longevity and performance of artificial lift systems through targeted mechanical design improvements and material innovation. Corrosion-related failures have emerged as a critical driver of premature support bolt failures in underground mines, emphasizing the urgency of understanding the phenomenon with respect to enhancing safety in underground environments. This study investigated key factors influencing bolt degradation through extensive experimental evaluation of cable bolts in simulated underground bolt environments. Multi-stranded cable specimens were exposed to saturated clay, coal, mine water, and grout/cement environments. Water samples were collected weekly from critical packing sections and analyzed for pH, electrical conductivity, and dissolved oxygen. The mineralogy and atmospheric conditions were identified as principal corrosion factors, and clay-rich and coal matrices accelerated corrosion, linked to high ion mobility and oxygen diffusion. Secondary factors correlated context-dependently: pH was negatively associated with corrosion in mineral-packed environments, while conductivity was correlated with non-mineral matrices. Notably, multi-stranded cables exhibited higher localized galvanic corrosion in inter-strand zones, highlighting design vulnerabilities. This work provides pioneering evidence that geological conditions are primary drivers for corrosion-related failures, offering actionable guidance for corrosion mitigation strategies in mining infrastructure. Biodegradable magnesium alloys have emerged as promising alternatives to permanent metallic implants due to their unique combination of mechanical compatibility with bone and complete resorption, addressing the persistent issues of stress shielding and secondary removal surgeries. This review critically examines the historical development of magnesium-based biomaterials, highlighting advances in alloy design, manufacturing processes, and surface engineering that now enable tailored degradation and improved clinical performance. Drawing on recent clinical and preclinical studies, we summarize improvements in corrosion resistance, mechanical properties, and biocompatibility that have supported the clinical translation of magnesium alloys across a variety of orthopedic and emerging medical applications. However, challenges remain, including unpredictable in vivo degradation kinetics, limited long-term safety data, lack of standardized testing protocols, and ongoing regulatory uncertainties. We conclude that while magnesium-based biomaterials have advanced from experimental concepts to clinically validated solutions, further progress in personalized degradation control, real-time monitoring, and harmonized regulatory frameworks is needed to fully realize their transformative clinical potential. The initial reactivity of a multiphase ZnAlMgSi coating with an Al content > 30 wt.% was studied by in situ reflective microscopy under alternating applied potentials +50 mV/−50 mV vs. open-circuit potential in 5 wt.% NaCl and 5 wt.% Na2SO4 aqueous solutions. In both environments, galvanic coupling between different coating phases and the anodic behavior decreased in the order binary ZnAl > binary Zn/Zn2Mg > Zn2Mg > Al(Zn); dendrites were evidenced for the coating exposed alone as well as in galvanic coupling with steel. Contrary to the observations known for Zn-rich ZnAlMg coatings, pure Zn2Mg was less reactive than the pure ZnAl phase, underlining the importance of the microstructure for reactivity. Si-needles were systematically cathodic, and Al(Zn) dendrites have shown cathodic behavior in some couplings. In the configuration of coupling with steel, corrosion started at the interfaces “binary ZnAl/steel substrate” or “binary ZnAl/Si particle”. The distribution and nature of the corrosion products formed during the experiment were assessed using X-ray microanalysis in scanning electron microscopy and confocal Raman microscopy. In the sulfate environment, a homogenous and stable corrosion product layer formed from the first steps of the degradation; this was in contrast to the chloride environment, where no surface film formed on the dendrites.
