Weeksella virosa (W. virosa) is a rare, non-saccharolytic Gram-negative bacterium initially described in the 1970s, later proposed as a distinct genus in 1986. The genus Weeksella currently contains two species, namely W. virosa and W. massiliensis. Although primarily considered non-pathogenic, recent evidence has linked W. virosa to a limited number of clinical infections, mostly in immunocompromised patients. This review aims to consolidate the current body of knowledge on W. virosa, encompassing its microbiological and biochemical characteristics, involvement in human and animal infections, antimicrobial susceptibility profiles, and a critical evaluation of existing diagnostic methodologies. This review includes 13 case reports detailing 16 human cases retrieved from multiple databases, highlighting diagnostic inconsistencies and a lack of standardized antimicrobial susceptibility testing. Although W. virosa is generally susceptible to most antibiotics with the exception of aminoglycosides, recent reports seem to suggest a possible emerging resistance trend. The presence of this organism in hospital environments raises concerns about its potential transmission within healthcare settings. While biochemical testing appears to offer reasonably accurate identification of W. virosa, molecular confirmation may be warranted in some cases mainly due to the organism’s rarity. The reliability of MALDI-TOF MS for the identification of W. virosa remains currently uncertain. Further studies, including electron microscopy and genome-wide analysis, are urgently needed to clarify the pathogenic potential of this bacterium and guide clinical management. This review underscores the necessity for awareness among clinicians and microbiologists regarding this underrecognized pathogen. Full article

Despite a growing body of research on supercritical carbon dioxide (SCO2) heat transfer in microchannels, comprehensive reviews remain scarce. Existing studies predominantly focus on isolated experiments or simulations, yielding inconsistent findings and lacking a unified theory or optimization framework. This review systematically consolidates recent SCO2 microchannel heat transfer advancements, emphasizing key performance factors, degradation mechanisms, and optimization strategies. We critically analyze over 260 studies (1962–2024), evaluating the experimental and numerical methodologies, heat transfer deterioration (HTD) phenomena, and efficiency enhancement techniques. Key challenges include the complexity of heat transfer mechanisms, discrepancies in experimental outcomes, and the absence of standardized evaluation criteria. Future research directions involve refining predictive models, developing mitigation strategies for HTD, and optimizing microchannel geometries to enhance thermal performance. This work not only integrates the current knowledge but also provides actionable insights for advancing SCO2-based technologies in energy systems. Full article

Background and Objectives: Lung cancer represents one of the principal causes of cancer-associated mortality worldwide. Despite the numerous novel therapeutic agents, surgical resection remains, in many cases, the mainstay treatment. A growing body of evidence indicates that the anesthetic technique of choice contributes to perioperative immunosuppression, thus having an impact on cancer recurrence and prognosis. The aim of this systematic review is to provide a thorough summary of the current literature regarding the modulation of the immune response induced by the various anesthetic techniques that are used in lung cancer surgery, with a particular emphasis on cellular immunity. Materials and Methods: PubMed, Scopus, and the Cochrane databases were systematically searched from November 2023 up to March 2024 to identify randomized controlled trials (RCTs) that met the eligibility criteria. Results: A total of seven RCTs were included. Four of the RCTs compared the administration of general anesthesia alone versus general anesthesia combined with epidural anesthesia. The subsequent meta-analysis showed that the combination of general and epidural anesthesia exerted a positive impact on the cell counts of the CD3+ cells (SMD −0.42, 95% Cl −0.70 to −0.13 24 h postoperatively and SMD −0.86 95% Cl −1.48 to −0.23 72 h postoperatively), the CD4+ cells (SMD −0.41 95% Cl −0.69 to −0.12 at the end of surgery and SMD −0.56 95% Cl −0.85 to −0.27 72 h later), and the CD4+/CD8+ ratio (SMD −0.31 95% Cl −0.59 to −0.02 immediately after surgery, SMD −0.50 95% Cl −0.86 to −0.14 24 h postoperatively, and SMD −0.60 95% Cl −0.89 to −0.31 72 h later). The pooled results regarding CD8+ and NK cell counts were inconclusive. The remaining three studies compared volatile-based anesthesia with total intravenous anesthesia (TIVA). Due to disparities between these studies, qualitative analysis was inconclusive, whereas quantitative analysis was not feasible. Conclusions: The supplementation of general anesthesia with epidural anesthesia favorably impacts CD3+ and CD4+ cell counts, as well as the CD4+/CD8+ ratio. The present results and the effects of anesthetic technique on other immune cells must be consolidated with further high-quality studies. Full article

The phase-change solidification plugging material (PSPM), a novel type of plugging material for severe fluid loss in demanding formations, necessitates performance enhancement and deeper insight into its hydration mechanism. In this paper, with a foundational formula comprising a nucleating agent (S1), activator (M1), and deionized water, a comprehensive investigation was conducted. This involved basic performance testing, including fluidity, setting or thickening time, hydration heat analysis, SEM and XRD for hydration products, and conduction of kinetics model. The focus was on analyzing the effects of three additives on system properties, hydration process, and hydration products, leading to the inference of the hydration mechanism of PSPM. It was found that the structure additives (SA) and flow pattern regulator (6301) did not partake in the hydration reaction, focusing instead on enhancing structure strength and maintaining slurry stability, respectively. Conversely, the phase regulator (BA) actively engaged in the hydration process, transitioning the system from the KG-N-D to the KG-D model, thereby extending the thickening time without altering the final hydration products. The morphology and composition of the products confirmed that SI and M1 dissolve in the aqueous solution and progressively form Mg(OH)2 and MgSO4·zMg(OH)2·xH2O. The slurry gradually solidifies, ultimately resulting in the formation of a high-strength consolidated body, thereby achieving the objective of lost circulation control. Full article

An increasing body of evidence indicates that phytoplasmas can coexist with other pathogens in mixed infections, including various 16Sr group phytoplasmas, ‘Candidatus Liberibacter’ species, viruses, spiroplasmas, fungi, and other difficult-to-culture phloem-limited bacteria. These interactions challenge established views regarding the causes, detection, and management of plant diseases. This review consolidates existing knowledge on the diversity and epidemiology of phytoplasma-related mixed infections, with a particular emphasis on documented co-infections across various host plants and regions, especially in tropical and subtropical areas. Mixed infections affect disease severity, symptom expression, vector behavior, and pathogen dissemination, highlighting the limitations of pathogen-specific diagnostic and control strategies. The necessity for tools to detect multiple pathogens, enhanced understanding of pathogen–pathogen and host–pathogen interactions, and comprehensive surveillance systems is emphasized. Ultimately, breeding for resistance must consider the complexities of natural co-infections to ensure effective protection of crops. Addressing the challenges presented by phytoplasma-related mixed infections is crucial for developing resilient and sustainable plant health strategies in the face of increasing ecological and agricultural pressures. A lime–sand island–reef formation has a dual structure consisting of an overlying loose or weakly consolidated coral sand (CS) layer and an underlying reef limestone layer. The coral sand layer is the sole carrier of the underground freshwater lens in the lime–sand island–reef, and it differs in terms of its hydraulic properties from common terrigenous quartz sand (QS). This study investigated the mechanism of freshwater lens formation, dominated by solute dispersion, combining multi-scale experiments and numerical simulations (GMS) to reveal the control mechanisms behind the dispersion properties of coral sand and their role in freshwater lens formation. Firstly, the dispersion test and microscopic characterization revealed the key differences in coral sand in terms of its roundness, roughness, particle charge, and surface hydrophilicity. Accordingly, a hierarchical conversion model for the coral sand–quartz sand coefficient of dispersion (COD) was established (R2 > 0.99). Further, combining this with numerical simulation in GMS revealed that the response pattern of the coefficient of dispersion to key parameters of freshwater lens development is as follows: freshwater appearance time > steady-state freshwater body thickness > steady-state freshwater reserve > lens stabilization time. These results clarify the development mechanism and formation process behind freshwater lenses on island reefs, from the micro to the macro scale, and provide a scientific basis for optimizing the protection of freshwater resources in coral islands and guiding the construction of artificial islands. The expected cutaneous adverse effects (CAE) of oncology therapies can be disabling and even force the patient to discontinue treatment. The incorporation of cosmetics into skin care regimens (SCRs) as true therapeutic adjuvants can prevent, control, and avoid sequelae. However, cosmetics may also lead to adverse reactions in patients. The aim of our study was to assess the impact of the tolerability of cosmetics used in routine skin care on quality of life in this vulnerable population group through a survey. In addition, information was collected to improve the knowledge of the beneficial effects of cosmetics and the composition recommended. Hospital nurses guided the patients to fill in the surveys, which were done once. The main uses are related to daily hygiene care, photoprotection, and dermo-cosmetic treatment to prevent or at least reduce the skin’s adverse effects. More than 30% (36.36%) of patients perceived undesirable effects or discomfort with the use of cosmetics (27.27% in the facial area, 27.27% in the body and hands, and 22.73% in the scalp and hair). Intolerance was described for some soaps and creams used in the facial area. This study provides additional evidence on perceived tolerance supporting updates of clinical practice guidelines, highlights consolidated knowledge and evidence on the use of cosmetics, as well as new recommendations on the use and composition of cosmetics intended for oncological patients. There is a need for more knowledge about cosmetic ingredients and formulations, including ingredients of concern, such as endocrine disruptors. Full article

Sleep is an essential part of everyday life and disturbed sleep can produce numerous deleterious effects on the body. An especially prevalent and detrimental subset of sleep disturbances are sleep disturbances that occur in patients during the postoperative period. To better understand these disorders and how to treat them, a literature search was conducted to identify and consolidate recent advancements in this field. This narrative review discusses the structure of a typical night of sleep and the causes, effects, and treatment strategies of Postoperative Sleep Disturbances (PSDs). Factors that contribute to the development of PSDs have been identified at all stages of the surgical process, including the preoperative, intraoperative, and postoperative timepoints. Exposure to these factors can accumulate during each step and may decrease the quality of sleep postoperatively. The development of PSDs has been found to affect multiple systems throughout the body and can ultimately lead to poorer recovery times and increased postoperative mortality. As a result, multiple therapeutic approaches are being investigated for their role in reducing the prevalence of these disorders. This has revealed promising interventions throughout the surgical process, such as preoperative nerve blocks, intraoperative infusions, and postoperative behavioral interventions. However, despite these successful findings, work still needs to be completed to optimize these techniques and generalize intervention strategies. Full article

Towards an Integrated Socio-Ecological Approach in Green Building Transitions: A Systematic Literature Review

In view of the growing interest in green building transitions (GBTs) over the past decade, various GBT frameworks have been developed. Concurrently, a comprehensive systematic review of GBT research is yet to be conducted, leaving ambiguity surrounding the evolution and adoption of diverse models in this field. In general, existing frameworks mainly adopt socio-technical or socio-institutional approaches. Focusing on different individual practices, these studies have resulted in fragmented results. There is a lack of an integrative understanding of the socio-ecology of the GBT system. Hence, this study aims to consolidate existing research works conducted in the GBT fields and develop an integrative GBT framework towards a socio-ecological approach. A mixed-methods approach was employed, combining qualitative content analysis with quantitative bibliometric methods. The findings indicated that qualitative approaches (constituting 47%, encompassing 34 articles) and modeling techniques (comprising 37%, amounting to 27 articles) emerged as the predominant research methodologies employed. Evolutionary game theory and the multi-level perspective stood out as the most prevalent theoretical frameworks utilized in studies of GBT. Noteworthy contributions to the field were observed from China (with 29 articles) and the UK (with 17 articles). Notable keywords such as “barriers” (frequency = 16) and “energy” (frequency = 11) were identified as pivotal in the analysis. Furthermore, a total of ten co-occurrence clusters were identified to classify related keywords, enhancing content relevance and pinpointing key thematic groupings. The findings highlighted the need for a new direction in future GBT research, specifically focusing on the socio-ecological perspective. This perspective not only focuses on the human dimension of technical and institutional factors but also on the exchange between the ecosystem and society. It also emphasizes the resilience and adaptability to absorb disruptions and progress towards a more desired system state. This study offers valuable contributions to the existing body of GBT literature and has implications for researchers and research institutions in this field. Full article

Obesity and low back pain (LBP) are major contributors to global disability and healthcare burden in both adults and children. Although a growing body of research supports a bidirectional relationship between these conditions, the underlying mechanisms remain poorly integrated in the current literature. While mechanical overload has traditionally been viewed as the principal link, emerging evidence points to additional roles for metabolic dysregulation, chronic low-grade inflammation, and adipokine activity in the development and persistence of LBP. This review addresses the need for a comprehensive synthesis of how obesity affects spinal structures, including the intervertebral discs, paraspinal muscles, facet joints, and epidural fat, through both biomechanical and systemic biological pathways. We specifically highlight key mechanisms such as oxidative stress, adipokine signalling, and neuroinflammation that may accelerate spinal degeneration and promote chronic pain. In doing so, we aim to bridge gaps between anatomical, biochemical, and clinical perspectives. Additionally, we assess current clinical evidence on weight loss as a potential strategy for alleviating LBP symptoms. By consolidating diverse lines of evidence, this review provides a clearer framework for understanding obesity-related spinal pathology and outlines priorities for future research and targeted interventions. This study explores the emerging link between digital marketing and the circular economy, situated within the broader context of sustainability and digital transformation. Through a scientometric analysis of 276 documents indexed in Scopus, the research maps the conceptual, intellectual, and collaborative landscape of this intersection. The dataset was refined using the PRISMA standards, and the analysis was carried out with the R package bibliometrix. The findings reveal a highly fragmented body of literature, with a few prolific authors and limited international cooperation. Most of the influential publications are concentrated in a small number of sources, particularly the journal Sustainability. Thematic mapping identifies growing interest in areas such as consumer perception, sustainable development, and the adoption of digital tools by micro-enterprises, while other topics like recycling or public health remain peripheral. Although the scholarly output has surged in recent years (especially during 2023 and 2024), the field still lacks coherent theoretical frameworks or dominant research schools. Overall, digital marketing appears to be a promising driver for promoting circular practices, but further applied studies and enhanced international collaboration are essential to consolidate this line of inquiry. The current standard of care for inoperable stage III non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) is concurrent chemotherapy and radiation therapy with consolidation durvalumab. Despite this approach, about 50% of patients will experience disease recurrence, with about half of recurrence events occurring at distant metastatic sites. In this review, the authors performed a structured analysis of the available clinical trial data and literature related to the treatment of this disease. The authors discuss the detriments and merits of several of these trials and explore clinical and preclinical data that contribute to the growing body of literature supporting a future with new approaches, including new techniques in radiation therapy, sequencing, and agents. Upcoming trials may illuminate a path towards better outcomes for patients in this setting. Full article

Background: Pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma (PDAC) is the most common pancreatic malignancy and is characterized by a very unfavorable prognosis. Rarely, patients may develop synchronous PDAC and another distinct primary pancreatic tumor, such as a pancreatic neuroendocrine tumor. This systematic review consolidates published case reports describing the presentation, imaging characteristics, management, and outcomes of patients with synchronous PDAC and other pancreatic malignancies. Methods: A comprehensive search of PubMed and Scopus identified 26 relevant case reports, with inclusion criteria focused on histologically confirmed synchronous pancreatic tumors and exclusion of metastatic disease. Results: The majority of patients present with two pancreatic lesions, often located in both the body and tail of the pancreas. Diagnostic imaging modalities, such as computed tomography and endoscopic ultrasound, reveal common findings. Tumor markers, particularly CA 19-9, are often elevated and aid in the diagnosis. Surgical approaches also vary according to tumor location and staging, with procedures ranging from Whipple surgery to total pancreatectomy. Chemotherapy is frequently employed postoperatively. Notably, lymph node involvement and larger tumor size are associated with poorer prognoses. Conclusions: In conclusion, these patients may present with a common or non-common clinical picture as well as laboratory and imaging findings, constituting an important and unique diagnostic and therapeutic challenge. Search for Ancient Selection Traces in Faverolle Chicken Breed (Gallus gallus domesticus) Based on Runs of Homozygosity Analysis

Runs of homozygosity (ROHs) are continuous homozygous segments of genomes that can be used to infer the historical development of the population. ROH studies allow us to analyze the genetic structure of a population and identify signs of selection. The present study searched for ROH regions in the Faverolle chicken breed. DNA samples from modern individuals and museum Faverolle specimens were obtained and sent for whole-genome sequencing (WGS) with 30× coverage. The results were aligned to the reference genome and subjected to additional filtering. ROH segments were then analyzed using PLINK 1.9. As a result, 10 regions on GGA1, 2, 3, 4, and 13 were identified. A total of 19 genes associated with fat deposition and lipid metabolism (GBE1, CACNA2D1, STON1, PPP1R21, RPL21L1, ATP6V0E1, CREBRF, NKX2-2, COMMD1), fertility (LHCGR, GTF2A1L, SAMD5), muscle development and body weight (VGLL3, CACNA2D1, FOXN2, ERGIC1, RPL26L1), the shape and relative size of the skeleton (FAT4), and autophagy and apoptosis (BNIP1) were found. Developmental protein genes (PAX1, NKX2-2, NKX2-4, NKX2-5) formed a separate cluster. Probably, selection for the preservation of high flavor characteristics contributed to the consolidation of these ROH regions. The present research enhances our knowledge on the Faverolle breed’s genome and pinpoints their ROH segments that are also specific «selection traces». Full article

Enhancing Intraoral Scanning Accuracy: From the Influencing Factors to a Procedural Guideline

Background/Objectives: Intraoral scanning, a fast-evolving technology, is increasingly integrated into actual dental workflows due to its numerous advantages. Despite its growing adoption, challenges related to the accuracy of digital impressions remain. The existing literature identifies most of the factors influencing intraoral scanning accuracy (defined by precision and trueness), but it is fragmented and lacks a unified synthesis. In response to this gap, the present study aims to consolidate and structure the current evidence on the determinant factors and, based on these findings, to develop a clinically applicable procedural guideline for dental practitioners. Methods: A comprehensive literature review identified 43 distinct factors influencing intraoral scanning. Results: These factors encompass variables such as software versions and updates, implant characteristics (e.g., position, angulation, scan body design), materials, environmental conditions (e.g., lighting), and procedural elements including scanning strategy, pattern, aids, and operator experience. Subsequently, these identified factors were systematically classified into five distinct groups based on inherent similarities and relevance within the scanning workflow: IOS—characteristics and maintenance, intraoral morphology, materials, ambient conditions, and scanning strategy. To translate these findings into a practical framework, a four-step protocol was developed, designed for straightforward application by researchers and clinicians. Conclusions: This protocol—comprising: (1) Maintenance, (2) Evaluation, (3) Establishment and Execution of Scanning Strategy, and (4) Verification—aims to guide users effectively through the intraoral scanning process, mitigate common clinical challenges, and ensure broad applicability across diverse scanner systems, irrespective of the manufacturer or model.
