Wild edible fruit plants are integral to the cultural, nutritional, medicinal, and economic practices of Indigenous Isan communities in Roi Et Province, northeastern Thailand, a region characterized by plateau and lowland topography and a tropical monsoon climate. This study aimed to document the diversity, traditional uses, phenology, and conservation status of these species to inform sustainable management and conservation efforts. Field surveys and ethnobotanical interviews with 200 informants (100 men, 100 women; random ages) were conducted across 20 local communities to identify species diversity and usage patterns, while phenological observations and conservation assessments were performed to understand reproductive cycles and species vulnerability between January and December 2023. A total of 68 species from 32 families were recorded, with peak flowering in March–April and fruiting in May–June. Analyses of Species Use Value (0.19–0.48) and Relative Frequency of Citation (0.15–0.44) identified key species with significant roles in food security and traditional medicine. Uvaria rufa had the highest SUV (0.48) and RFC (0.44). Informant consensus on medicinal applications was strong for ailments such as gastrointestinal and lymphatic disorders. Economically important species were also identified, with some contributing notable income through local trade. Conservation proposed one species as Critically Endangered and several others as Vulnerable. The results highlight the need for integrated conservation strategies, including community-based initiatives and recognition of Other Effective area-based Conservation Measures (OECMs), to ensure the preservation of biodiversity, traditional knowledge, and local livelihoods. The renovation of old urban residential areas is and will continue to be an important part of urban renewal in China. The renovation of existing old urban residential areas focuses more on the physical level of renovation and pays insufficient attention to the improvement of collaborative community governance. However, collaborative community governance is the key to sustainable renovation. This study aims to explore the formation mechanism of multiple subjects’ collaborative governance in the renovation of old urban residential areas. A general collaborative governance theoretical framework was adopted and adjusted by innovatively introducing the improvement of collaborative community governance in old urban residential areas as an important variable in collaborative results. Data were collected through 853 questionnaires in 16 provinces across China and analyzed using Structural Equation Modeling. Data analysis reveals the following conclusions: (1) institution design and the collaborative process have significant positive impacts on collaborative results, while facilitative leadership has a negative impact; (2) the collaborative process is an important mediating variable on collaborative results; (3) government departments’ and residents’ self-governing organizations play important roles in improving collaborative community governance. Face-to-face dialogue and consultation, information disclosure and transparency, and reaching an intermediate consensus are important mediator variables. The research results provide theoretical support and practical suggestions for promoting the improvement of multiple-subject collaboration through old urban residential area renovation. Full article

Unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs), commonly known as drones, offer unprecedented flexibility for complex missions such as area surveillance, search and rescue, and cooperative inspection. This paper presents a unified evaluation framework for the comparison of centralized and distributed task allocation algorithms specifically tailored to multi-UAV operations. We first contextualize the classical assignment problem (AP) under UAV mission constraints, including the flight time, propulsion energy capacity, and communication range, and evaluate optimal one-to-one solvers including the Hungarian algorithm, the Bertsekas ϵ-auction algorithm, and a minimum cost maximum flow formulation. To reflect the dynamic, uncertain environments that UAV fleets encounter, we extend our analysis to distributed multi-UAV task allocation (MUTA) methods. In particular, we examine the consensus-based bundle algorithm (CBBA) and a distributed auction 2-opt refinement strategy, both of which iteratively negotiate task bundles across UAVs to accommodate real-time task arrivals and intermittent connectivity. Finally, we outline how reinforcement learning (RL) can be incorporated to learn adaptive policies that balance energy efficiency and mission success under varying wind conditions and obstacle fields. Through simulations incorporating UAV-specific cost models and communication topologies, we assess each algorithm’s mission completion time, total energy expenditure, communication overhead, and resilience to UAV failures. Our results highlight the trade-off between strict optimality, which is suitable for small fleets in static scenarios, and scalable, robust coordination, necessary for large, dynamic multi-UAV deployments. Falkland Islands English (FIE) began its development in the first half of the 19th century. In part, as a consequence of its youth, FIE is an understudied variety. It shares some morphosyntactic features with other anglophone countries in the Southern Hemisphere, but it also shares lexical features with regional varieties of Spanish, including Rioplatense Spanish. Che is one of many South American words that have entered FIE through Spanish, with its spelling ranging from “chay” and “chey” to “ché”. The word has received some marginal attention in terms of its meaning. It is said to be used in a similar way to the British dear or love and the Australian mate, and it has been compared to chum or pal, and is taken as an equivalent of the River Plate, hey!, hi!, or I say!. In this work, we explore the hypothesis that che entered FIE through historical contact with Rioplatense Spanish, drawing on both linguistic and sociohistorical evidence, and presenting survey, corpus, and ethnographic data that illustrate its current vitality, usage, and social meanings among FIE speakers. In situ observations, fieldwork, and an online survey were used to look into the vitality of che. Concomitantly, by crawling social media and the local press, enough data was gathered to build a small corpus to further study its vitality. A thorough literature review was conducted to hypothesise about the borrowing process involving its entry into FIE. The findings confirm that the word is primarily a vocative, it is commonly used, and it is indicative of a sense of belonging to the Falklands community. Although there is no consensus on the origin of che in the River Plate region, it seems to be the case that it entered FIE during the intense Spanish–English contact that took place during the second half of the 19th century. AI-Enhanced Coastal Flood Risk Assessment: A Real-Time Web Platform with Multi-Source Integration and Chesapeake Bay Case Study

A critical gap exists between coastal communities’ need for accessible flood risk assessment tools and the availability of sophisticated modeling, which remains limited by technical barriers and computational demands. This study introduces three key innovations through Coastal Defense Pro: (1) the first operational web-based AI ensemble for coastal flood risk assessment integrating real-time multi-agency data, (2) an automated regional calibration system that corrects systematic model biases through machine learning, and (3) browser-accessible implementation of research-grade modeling previously requiring specialized computational resources. The system combines Bayesian neural networks with optional LSTM and attention-based models, implementing automatic regional calibration and multi-source elevation consensus through a modular Python architecture. Real-time API integration achieves >99% system uptime with sub-3-second response times via intelligent caching. Validation against Hurricane Isabel (2003) demonstrates correction from 197% overprediction (6.92 m predicted vs. 2.33 m observed) to accurate prediction through automated identification of a Chesapeake Bay-specific reduction factor of 0.337. Comprehensive validation against 15 major storms (1992–2024) shows substantial improvement over standard methods (RMSE = 0.436 m vs. 2.267 m; R2 = 0.934 vs. −0.786). Economic assessment using NACCS fragility curves demonstrates 12.7-year payback periods for flood protection investments. The open-source Streamlit implementation democratizes access to research-grade risk assessment, transforming months-long specialist analyses into immediate browser-based tools without compromising scientific rigor. Based on a literature review, the present article aims to present ecotourism as a transformative factor in the economic, social, cultural, and environmental contexts, revealing key elements for the sustainable development of ecotourism. To ensure that this objective is met, the review combines the insights of classical authors and many recent authors who have best addressed the subject. The review carefully selected consensual and contradictory arguments, reflecting on the relevance of each group, particularly in aspects such as the influence of emotional experience on behaviour and satisfaction, strategy and competitive advantage, cooperation and sustainability, and the influence of resilience on ecotourism. The impact of each perspective was presented without ignoring the major constraints that ecotourism faces in its search for a position in the tourism industry. This led the study to accept the fact that the active participation of the community is indispensable in the formula for the success of ecotourism. Some statistical data were consulted and analysed, which enabled the study to determine the quantitative impact of ecotourism on economic, social, and environmental life. In terms of benefits to communities, the review clarifies the fact that ecotourism serves as an instrument that mobilizes not only the additional value of products and services traded in the process, but also the return on investments and job creation. The combination of visiting activities with the involvement of tour guides contributes to maximizing profits in the destinations, thus supporting solid economic, social, and environmental development for the benefit of both ecotourism promoters and local communities. However, the analysis makes it clear that the economic, social, and environmental benefit depends on the degree of involvement of the local population. In terms of usability, for other studies, this review can contribute to the understanding and positioning of ecotourism in the search for a balance between satisfying socioeconomic and environmental interests. Additionally, it can serve as an aid to policy makers in their decisions related to ecotourism. Full article

In recent decades, information technology has grown. Computers have become a daily activity, facilitating access to information, faster communication and faster work. If used responsibly, it has many advantages. Objectives: To explore the potential link between prolonged use of computer input devices—such as keyboards and mice—and the development of compressive neuropathies, including carpal tunnel syndrome (CTS) and cubital tunnel syndrome (CuTS), in individuals whose daily routines are heavily reliant on computer-based activities. Methods: A comprehensive review of the literature was undertaken to assess the correlation between the use of computer input devices and the incidence of compressive neuropathies in the upper limbs, with particular attention to repetitive strain, ergonomic posture deviations, and personal risk factors. Results: Current evidence indicates a potential association between prolonged computer use and the development of upper limb compressive neuropathies; however, a definitive consensus within the scientific literature remains elusive. Repetitive movements and non-neutral postures appear to be significant contributing factors, particularly among individuals with predisposing risk factors. Despite increasing awareness of this issue, standardized, evidence-based clinical guidelines for the evaluation and management of work-related nerve disorders remain lacking. Conclusions: While the relationship between computer use and compressive neuropathies remains debated, healthcare professionals should be aware of the risks, particularly in individuals exposed to repetitive strain and ergonomic stress. Further research and the development of clinical guidelines are needed to better understand and manage these work-related conditions. Full article

Children living with chronic diseases represent a great challenge for the health care system, their families, and communities. These young patients face continuous medical needs that affect not only their health but also their daily routines, emotional well-being, and family dynamics. In response, clinical practice is increasingly integrating psychosocial indicators alongside traditional medical parameters. Consequently, there is a growing consensus that the evaluation of pediatric chronic diseases should address not only clinical dimensions but also the disease’s impact on socialization, emotional health, and daily functioning. This narrative review explores the role of psychosocial variables in the management of pediatric chronic illnesses, including the experiences of parents and siblings, with a focus on effective strategies to improve everyday life. The integration of quality of life and well-being within a multidimensional care model could be instrumental in both symptom management and psychosocial support. Recognizing that children with chronic conditions are at increased risk for long-term adverse outcomes, it is critical to develop interventions that go beyond clinical care, encompassing education, coping reinforcement, and family-centered approaches. Sexual consent is essential, but in some instances an individual may consent to sexual behaviors that are unwanted. The likelihood of unwanted consensual sex may be influenced by multiple social and individual factors. The current study examined engagement in unwanted consensual sex based on demographics, relationship and/or hookup history, and sexual communication characteristics among college students. This cross-sectional study was conducted utilizing a random sample of college students at one midwestern university. Data was collected via an online survey, including questions about sexual behavior, communication, and sexual consent. Basic frequencies and bivariate and multivariate analyses were conducted. This random sample included 1263 undergraduate students. Level of comfort communicating about sex was negatively associated with unwanted consensual sex. Gender was significantly associated with the likelihood of unwanted consensual sex and was a significant predictor of unwanted consensual sex among this sample. Unwanted consensual sex may vary based on individual characteristics, like gender. The current findings may help guide future studies on unwanted consensual sex, as well as continued sex education programming on college campuses to increase comfort when communicating about sexual behaviors. Consensus protocols for a multi-agent networked system consist of strategies that align the states of all agents that share information according to a given network topology, despite challenges such as communication limitations, time-varying networks, and communication delays. The special orthogonal group SO(n) plays a key role in applications from rigid body attitude synchronization to machine learning on Lie groups, particularly in fields like physics-informed learning and geometric deep learning. In this paper, N-agent consensus protocols are proposed on the Lie group SO(4) and the corresponding tangent bundle TSO(4), in which the state spaces are SO(4)N and TSO(4)N, respectively. In particular, when using communication topologies such as a ring graph for which the local stability of non-consensus equilibria is retained in the closed loop, a consensus protocol that leverages a reshaping strategy is proposed to destabilize non-consensus equilibria and produce consensus with almost global stability on SO(4)N or TSO(4)N. Lyapunov-based stability guarantees are obtained, and simulations are conducted to illustrate the advantages of these proposed consensus protocols. Full article

Background/Objectives: Auditory capacity plays a fundamental role in human emotional development from prenatal stages and persists as the last sensory modality to fade during terminal phases. In palliative sedation, uncertainty about preserved hearing—despite potential unconsciousness—underscores the need to evaluate current care recommendations for this critical sensory dimension. This review examines European guidelines to (i) assess auditory care integration in palliative sedation protocols and (ii) propose humanization strategies for sensory-preserving end-of-life care. Methods: Narrative review of evidence from the European Palliative Sedation Repository and the European Association for Palliative Care (EAPC). Results: Three key findings emerged: (i) lack of explicit protocols for auditory care despite acknowledging environmental sound management (e.g., music, family communication); (ii) limited consensus exists regarding hearing preservation during unconsciousness. Conclusions: Although auditory perception during palliative sedation remains scientifically uncertain, the precautionary principle warrants integrating auditory care into palliative sedation through (i) family education on potential hearing preservation; (ii) therapeutic sound protocols; and (iii) staff training in sensory-inclusive practices. This approach addresses current gaps in the guidelines while enhancing patient dignity and family support during end-of-life care. Further research should clarify auditory perception thresholds during sedation. Full article

The increasing penetration of renewable energy sources (RESs) has significantly altered the operational characteristics of modern power systems, resulting in reduced system inertia and fault current capacity. These developments introduce new challenges for maintaining frequency and voltage stability, particularly in low-inertia grids that are dominated by inverter-based resources (IBRs). This paper presents a hierarchical control framework that integrates synchronous condensers (SCs) and grid-forming (GFM) inverters through a leader–follower consensus control architecture to address these issues. In this approach, selected GFMs act as leaders to restore nominal voltage and frequency, while follower GFMs and SCs collaboratively share active and reactive power. The primary control employs droop-based regulation, and a distributed secondary layer enables proportional power sharing via peer-to-peer communication. A modified IEEE 14-bus test system is implemented in PSCAD to validate the proposed strategy under scenarios including load disturbances, reactive demand variations, and plug-and-play operations. Compared to conventional droop-based control, the proposed framework reduces frequency nadir by up to 0.3 Hz and voltage deviation by 1.1%, achieving optimised sharing indices. Results demonstrate that consensus-based coordination enhances dynamic stability and power-sharing fairness and supports the flexible integration of heterogeneous assets without requiring centralised control. Practical Byzantine Fault Tolerance (PBFT) has been widely used in consortium blockchain systems; however, it suffers from performance degradation and susceptibility to Byzantine faults in complex environments. To overcome these limitations, this paper proposes RE-BPFT, an enhanced consensus algorithm that integrates a nuanced node credibility model considering direct interactions, indirect reputations, and historical behavior. Additionally, we adopt an optimized ID3 decision-tree method for node classification, dynamically identifying high-performing, trustworthy, ordinary, and malicious nodes based on real-time data. To address issues related to centralization risk in leader selection, we introduce a weighted random primary node election mechanism. We implemented a prototype of the RE-BPFT algorithm in Python and conducted extensive evaluations across diverse network scales and transaction scenarios. Experimental results indicate that RE-BPFT markedly reduces consensus latency and communication costs while achieving higher throughput and better scalability than classical PBFT, RBFT, and PPoR algorithms. Thus, RE-BPFT demonstrates significant advantages for large-scale and high-demand consortium blockchain use cases, particularly in areas like digital traceability and forensic data management. This paper presents a distributed optimization algorithm for time-varying objective functions utilizing a prescribed-time convergent multi-agent system within undirected communication networks. Departing from conventional time-invariant optimization paradigms with static optimal solutions, our approach specifically addresses the challenge of tracking dynamic optimal trajectories in evolving environments. A novel continuous-time distributed optimization algorithm is developed based on prescribed-time consensus, guaranteeing the consensus attainment among agents within a user-defined timeframe while asymptotically converging to the time-dependent optimal solution. The proposed methodology enables explicit predetermination of convergence duration, representing a significant advancement over existing asymptotic convergence methods. Moreover, two simulation examples on the rendezvous problem and multi-robots control are presented to validate the theoretical results, exhibiting precise time-controlled convergence characteristics and effective tracking performance for time-varying optimization targets. Traditional systems in real life lack transparency and ease of use due to their reliance on centralization and large infrastructure. Furthermore, many sectors that rely on information technology face major challenges related to data integrity, trust, and counterfeiting, limiting scalability and acceptance in the community. With the decentralization and digitization of energy transactions in smart grids, security, integrity, and fraud prevention concerns have increased. The main problem addressed in this study is the lack of a secure, tamper-resistant, and decentralized mechanism to facilitate direct consumer-to-prosumer energy transactions. Thus, this is a major challenge in the smart grid. In the blockchain, current consensus algorithms may limit the scalability of smart grids, especially when depending on popular algorithms such as Proof of Work, due to their high energy consumption, which is incompatible with the characteristics of the smart grid. Meanwhile, Proof of Stake algorithms rely on energy or cryptocurrency stake ownership, which may make the smart grid environment in blockchain technology vulnerable to control by the many owning nodes, which is incompatible with the purpose and objective of this study. This study addresses these issues by proposing and implementing a hybrid framework that combines the features of private and public blockchains across three integrated layers: user interface, application, and blockchain. A key contribution of the system is the design of a novel consensus algorithm, Proof of Energy, which selects validators based on node roles and randomized assignment, rather than computational power or stake ownership. This makes it more suitable for smart grid environments. The entire framework was developed without relying on existing decentralized platforms such as Ethereum. The system was evaluated through comprehensive experiments on performance and security. Performance results show a throughput of up to 60.86 transactions per second and an average latency of 3.40 s under a load of 10,000 transactions. Security validation confirmed resistance against digital signature forgery, invalid smart contracts, race conditions, and double-spending attacks. Despite the promising performance, several limitations remain. The current system was developed and tested on a single machine as a simulation-based study using transaction logs without integration of real smart meters or actual energy tokenization in real-time scenarios. In future work, we will focus on integrating real-time smart meters and implementing full energy tokenization to achieve a complete and autonomous smart grid platform. Overall, the proposed system significantly enhances data integrity, trust, and resistance to counterfeiting in smart grids. Full article
