As the world’s population of older adults continues to grow rapidly, combating loneliness and social isolation has become an emerging health concern for this group. Though there has been increasing interest within the scientific community in exploring digital games as an intervention for loneliness, research on gaming as an intervention is a relatively new field of study. This scoping review examines the current state of research on the impact of digital gaming on loneliness in the older adult population and was conducted in accordance with the 2018 Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses extension for Scoping Reviews (PRISMA-ScR) guidelines. A total of 317 potentially relevant studies were identified through database searches, and of these, 278 studies were excluded due to failure to meet inclusion criteria. The full texts of 39 articles were assessed for eligibility, resulting in 9 articles being included in this scoping review. Some important findings from our study include the central role of social interaction in addressing loneliness and the potential for interventions targeting both physical and mental well-being to have a more significant impact on alleviating loneliness. We also found that while many studies reported positive effects of gaming interventions, some findings were contradictory, suggesting that the relationship between gaming and loneliness is complex and moderated by multiple factors. Recommendations for future research include expanding investigations to outside of East Asia (where the majority of existing studies were conducted) to the United States, Africa, India, or Europe. This narrative case-based review describes the environmental and public health impacts in Chañaral, a town in northern Chile affected by the accumulation of copper mining tailings for the past 80 years. The review included 34 scientific articles published between 1978 and 2025. The keywords used were “mining tailings” and “Chañaral”, without year limits, and covering disciplines such as ecology, public health, environmental history, and territorial studies. The scientific evidence demonstrates the negative impacts on the ecosystem and the human population exposed to toxic metals and arsenic. Geomorphological and biogeochemical alterations have been found on the Chañaral coast, affecting marine biodiversity and water quality. In addition, epidemiological studies indicate exposure to toxic metals measured in street dust and urine, raising concerns on respiratory health in children and metabolic conditions in adults. According to the social sciences, the lack of environmental monitoring and human exposure data contributes to the high health risk perception in the population, posing the need to strengthen environmental monitoring, raise awareness on the risks of exposure to toxic metals, and promote mitigation and restoration strategies. These measures will contribute to sustainable conditions for the Chañaral community through the improvement of comprehensive public policies. Full article

This study, conducted in Cajón de Piedra, Santo Domingo Tehuantepec, analyzes women’s participation in Sembrando Vida (PSV), Mexico’s flagship reforestation and rural development program, through the lenses of community engagement and feminist care economy frameworks. The research employed convenience sampling and participatory workshops with 27 participants (20 men and seven women). Using innovative mixed methods, the study maps gendered labor divisions and PSV’s impact on women’s daily lives. The results reveal that while PSV enhances women’s productive labor visibility, it simultaneously exacerbates time poverty due to unpaid care work burdens and infrastructural deficits. The program’s contribution to community resilience is tempered by its reinforcement of traditional gender roles. These findings underscore the urgent need for intersectional policy design in rural development initiatives, highlighting the importance of this research in shaping future policies. Full article

Hydrothermal vents are “oases” of biological productivity and endemicity on the seafloor. Chemosynthetic communities at deep-sea hydrothermal vents are characterized by high abundance and endemism. The distribution of species among these isolated habitats supports regional biodiversity and stability, so understanding the fundamental processes is a key target of conservation. Larval dispersal resulting from deep-ocean circulations is one of the major factors influencing the diversity and distributions of vent animals. By combining a biophysical model with biological larvae traits, we quantify potential larval dispersal of vent species via ocean circulation in the Azores Triple Junction. Here we present results from a biophysical model of larval dispersal run for the hydrothermal vent benthic mussel Bathymodiolus azoricus. Several scenarios were implemented, based on similar data sets, although changing values for one or two parameters, such as swimming behaviour and planktonic larvae duration. Results showed that larvae retention is the most common pattern from the Azores Triple Junction vent fields mussel. The Rainbow vent field is rather isolated, being the sink population of the Menez Gwen and Lucky Strike but with a very low number of larvae exchange. Results are discussed in the framework of spatial management to maintain the populations after an impact by natural or human disturbance. Full article

Study on the Influence of Low-Carbon Economy on Employment Skill Structure—Evidence from 30 Provincial Regions in China

In confronting escalating economic uncertainty, achieving a win–win situation for low-carbon transition and improved employment structure will contribute to economic recovery and sustainable growth but also contribute to building a community with a shared future for mankind. A critical issue for China’s economy and societal welfare, as well as a core component of sustainable development, concerns whether low-carbon economic transition influences employment skill structure. This study utilizes data from 30 provinces (municipalities and autonomous regions) in China from 2006 to 2021. Employing the entropy method, a low-carbon economic development level indicator system was constructed from four aspects: low-carbon output, low-carbon consumption, low-carbon resources, and low-carbon environment to measure the low-carbon economy and explore its direct and indirect effects on employment skill structure and spatial effects. The research findings indicate that low-carbon economies not only directly and significantly promote employment skill structure optimization but also indirectly generate promotional effects through pathways such as industrial structure adjustment, green innovation’s innovative effects, and factor substitution effects of increased pollution control investment. Among these, the indirect impact of industrial structure adjustment contributes most substantially. Low-carbon economies’ influence on employment skill structures exhibits spatial spillover effects, with neighboring regions’ low-carbon economies exerting positive spillover effects on local skill structures. Additionally, significant negative interdependence exists among regional employment skill structures. Based on the aforementioned research conclusions, the following recommendations are proposed: accelerate low-carbon economy development and employment skill structure enhancement in central and western regions to diminish regional disparities; encourage green innovation and promote traditional industry upgrading and transformation; formulate regional coordinated development plans, thereby strengthening the low-carbon economy’s optimizing role upon employment skills structure; and increase educational investment and strengthen labor skill training. This paper enhances the multikey scenario in the Gentry–Sahai–Waters (GSW) fully homomorphic encryption scheme to increase its real-world applicability. We integrate the advantages of two existing GSW multikey approaches: one enabling distributed decryption and the other reducing memory requirements. We also apply the CRT decomposition and ciphertext compression techniques to the multikey settings. While leveraging the effectiveness of decomposition, we adapt the compression technique for practical cryptographic applications, as demonstrated through simulations in federated learning and multiparty communication scenarios. Our work’s potential impact on the cryptography field is significant, as it offers a more efficient and secure solution for distributed data processing in real-world scenarios, thereby advancing the state of the art in secure communication systems. Background: Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is a complex neurodevelopmental condition characterized by social communication deficits, repetitive behaviors, and frequent gastrointestinal comorbidities. Emerging research suggests gut microbiota alterations contribute to ASD symptoms and gastrointestinal dysfunction, but detailed microbial profiles and clinical correlations remain underexplored. Methods: This study analyzed gut microbiota in 45 children aged 2–18 years diagnosed with ASD. Stool samples underwent 16S rRNA gene sequencing. Clinical assessments included ASD diagnostic subtype, adaptive functioning using the Vineland Adaptive Behavior Scale, gastrointestinal symptoms as per the Rome IV criteria, dietary patterns, and demographic variables. Statistical analyses correlated microbiota profiles with clinical features. Results: Gut microbiota composition was significantly influenced by delivery mode, age, sex, and diet. Vaginally delivered children had higher beneficial SCFA-producing bacteria, whereas Cesarean section was linked to increased pathogenic Clostridiales. High-calorie and protein-rich diets correlated with shifts toward pro-inflammatory taxa. Microbial diversity and specific genera correlated with adaptive behavior domains (communication, socialization, motor skills) and severity of gastrointestinal symptoms. Both pro-inflammatory and anti-inflammatory bacteria variably impacted neurodevelopmental outcomes. Conclusions: Gut microbiota composition in children with ASD is shaped by multifactorial influences and connected to neurobehavioral and gastrointestinal phenotypes. The findings of this study support the potential of microbiota-targeted interventions to ameliorate ASD-associated symptoms and improve quality of life. Full article

Sand mining activities can significantly impact the microecology of rivers. Scientific studies are needed for the effective protection and restoration of river ecosystems impacted by sand mining activities. In this study, we used high-throughput sequencing technology to analyse the structure and function of sediment bacterial communities in three river habitats of the Jialing River Basin, namely, a natural river channel (no sand mining activities), a channel with continuous large-scale sand mining activities, and a channel in which sand mining had been terminated one year prior, as well as to analyse the main constraints leading to changes in sediment bacterial communities. The results revealed that the dominant bacteria in the different sand mining environments of the Jialing River were Proteobacteria, Chloroflexi, and Acidobacteria, and that total organic carbon (TOC), moisture content (MC) and total nitrogen (TN) were the main limiting factors affecting the structure of the bacterial community. In addition, large-scale sand mining activities caused significant changes (p < 0.05) in major secondary functions, such as energy metabolism, cofactor and vitamin metabolism, and translation. In summary, the persistence of large-scale sand mining activities led to heterogeneous changes in sediment bacterial community structure and function, which had an important impact on the stability of the ecosystem in the Jialing River Basin. The Arctic region, one of the most vulnerable areas globally, faces severe climate change impacts, with rising sea levels and temperatures threatening local communities. Modern geoinformation tools provide a reliable, cost-efficient, and time-saving method for assessing these climate changes in Arctic coastal regions. This study focuses on Finland’s Arctic and sub-Arctic diverse coastline. The Coastal Vulnerability Index (CVI) is used to assess the vulnerability of Finland’s coastlines, using advanced geoinformatics tools. Integrating high-resolution data from EMODnet, the National Land Survey of Finland Digital Elevation Model (DEM), and physical sources, the CVI includes six input parameters: geomorphology, coastal slope, shoreline change rates, mean wave height, tidal range, and relative sea-level change. The CVI results reveal pronounced spatial variability: 37% of the coastline is classified with very low vulnerability, primarily in the southern Gulf of Finland, and some northern segments, specifically part of Lapland, exhibit minimal susceptibility to coastal hazards. Conversely, the central Gulf of Bothnia shows high vulnerability (29%), with low and moderate vulnerability zones comprising 27% and 6%, respectively, and very high vulnerability at 1%. This assessment provides essential insights for sustainable coastal management in Finland by offering a replicable model for Arctic coastal assessments. This study supports policymakers and local communities in developing targeted adaptation strategies to enhance resilience against climate-driven coastal hazards. Full article

This study examines the impacts of industrial wastewater from the Uttara Export Processing Zone (UEPZ) on natural resources, agriculture, and the health of nearby communities in Nilphamari, Bangladesh. Using a quantitative, self-report approach, data were collected from 162 households across four villages in Nilphamari Sadar Upazila, selected based on proximity to the UEPZ. Findings reveal significant environmental degradation: almost all (96%) respondents reported that water in nearby rivers and ponds has changed color and is odorous, unpleasant to taste, and contaminated, harming aquatic biodiversity. Agricultural productivity has declined, with 67 percent of respondents experiencing reduced crop yields, increased crop diseases, and rising cultivation costs due to greater dependence on fertilizers and pesticides. Also, 96 percent of respondents reported that the fish population diminished, reducing alternative income sources. Health impacts were pronounced; 69 percent of the respondents experienced water pollution-related complications, including skin, respiratory, gastrointestinal, and eye problems. Perceptions of wastewater health risks were strongly aligned with reported illnesses. Binary logistic regression further indicated a positive association between degraded crop health and human health problems. The study concludes that UEPZ’s wastewater disposal negatively affects natural resources, agriculture, and public health, underscoring the need for improved waste management and mitigation to protect affected communities. E-government represents a global initiative that leverages information and communication technologies (ICTs) to enhance public service delivery and strengthen interactions between governments and citizens. While adoption is critical to realizing the potential benefits of e-government, research from the demand-side perspective remains limited, particularly regarding how individuals engage with these systems, the factors shaping their trust, and the role of media in promoting awareness and uptake. This study examines the influence of media exposure on e-government adoption by assessing its impact on trust, perceived ease of use, satisfaction, relative advantage, complexity, and observability. A quantitative survey was conducted among residents of the Rabat-Salé-Kénitra region, and the proposed model was tested using Partial Least Squares Structural Equation Modeling (PLS-SEM). The model demonstrated robust reliability (Cronbach’s alpha = 0.710), and ANOVA results (p < 0.001) confirmed the substantial explanatory power of the independent variables in predicting adoption. The model accounted for 65.7% of the variance in adoption and 67.2% in trust. Media exposure and digitalization exerted strong positive effects on trust, which emerged as the most influential predictor of adoption. Additionally, observability and relative advantage positively influenced adoption, whereas complexity had a negative effect. Notably, 72.86% of respondents expressed an intention to adopt e-government services in the future. These findings underscore the pivotal role of media as a catalyst for digital transformation and offer actionable insights for policymakers aiming to enhance citizen trust and engagement with e-government services. Background: Chronic ethanol consumption is a major global health concern traditionally associated with liver disease. Ethanol disrupts gut microbial communities, compromises intestinal barrier function, and contributes to hepatic, metabolic, and neurocognitive disorders. Methods: We conducted a systematic PubMed search and meta-analysis of 11 human and 19 animal studies evaluating ethanol-induced gut microbiota alterations. Studies were assessed for microbial diversity, taxonomic shifts, barrier integrity, and systemic effects. Effect sizes were calculated where possible, and interventional outcomes were examined. Results: Across species, ethanol exposure was consistently associated with reduced microbial diversity and depletion of beneficial commensals such as Faecalibacterium, Lactobacillus, Akkermansia, and Bifidobacterium, alongside an expansion of proinflammatory taxa (Proteobacteria, Enterococcus, Veillonella). Our analysis uniquely highlights discrepancies between human and animal studies, including opposite trends in specific genera (e.g., Akkermansia and Bifidobacterium) and the impact of confounders such as antibiotic exposure in human cohorts. We also demonstrate that microbiota-targeted interventions can partially restore diversity and improve clinical or behavioral outcomes. Conclusions: This meta-analysis highlights reproducible patterns of ethanol-induced gut dysbiosis across both human and animal studies. Full article

State-Space Model Meets Linear Attention: A Hybrid Architecture for Internal Wave Segmentation

Internal waves (IWs) play a crucial role in the transport of energy and matter within the ocean while also posing significant risks to marine engineering, navigation, and underwater communication systems. Consequently, effective segmentation methods are essential for mitigating their adverse impacts and minimizing associated hazards. A promising strategy involves applying remote sensing image segmentation techniques to accurately identify IWs, thereby enabling predictions of their propagation velocity and direction. However, current IWs segmentation models struggle to balance computational efficiency and segmentation accuracy, often resulting in either excessive computational costs or inadequate performance. Motivated by recent developments in the Mamba2 architecture, this paper introduces the state-space model meets linear attention (SMLA), a novel segmentation framework specifically designed for IWs. The proposed hybrid architecture effectively integrates three key components: a feature-aware serialization (FAS) block to efficiently convert spatial features into sequences; a state-space model with linear attention (SSM-LA) block that synergizes a state-space model with linear attention for comprehensive feature extraction; and a decoder driven by hierarchical fusion and upsampling, which performs channel alignment and scale unification across multi-level features to ensure high-fidelity spatial detail recovery. Experiments conducted on a dataset of 484 synthetic-aperture radar (SAR) images containing IWs from the South China Sea achieved a mean Intersection over Union (MIoU) of 74.3%, surpassing competing methods evaluated on the same dataset. These results demonstrate the superior effectiveness of SMLA in extracting features of IWs from SAR imagery. Full article

Bridging the Gap: Two Decades of Childhood Vaccination Coverage and Equity in Cambodia and the Philippines (2000–2022)

Background/Objectives: Equitable access to childhood vaccines remains a challenge in many low- and middle-income countries. This study assessed coverage of WHO-recommended childhood vaccines in Cambodia and the Philippines, focusing on urban–rural and wealth disparities, and examined maternal demographic and socioeconomic factors influencing vaccination coverage. Methods: Cross-sectional data from Demographic and Health Surveys from Cambodia (2000–2021/22) and the Philippines (2003–2022) were used. Descriptive analyses were performed to elucidate vaccination coverage trends (BCG, hepatitis B birth dose, DTP, OPV, PCV, and measles). Urban–rural and wealth-related disparities were assessed by calculating absolute differences and Slope Index of Inequality. Logistic regression was used to analyze the impact of maternal demographics and socioeconomic status on vaccination coverage. Results: Cambodia showed significant increases in BCG, DTP, and OPV coverage over the past two decades, whereas those coverage in the Philippines declined slightly since 2017. In 2022, 75.2% of Filipino children received the BCG and hepatitis B (birth dose) vaccines, and around two-thirds completed DTP, OPV, and PCV vaccinations on schedule, lower than the rates in Cambodia. Only half of the children completed measles vaccination in both countries. Urban–rural disparities declined over time in both countries, but wealth inequalities persisted and widened in the Philippines between 2017 and 2022. Women with higher education attainment, from a wealthy household and having fewer children, was associated with increased likelihood of completing childhood vaccinations in both countries. Conclusions: Persistent socioeconomic disparities in childhood vaccination in low- and middle-income countries highlight the need for targeted pro-poor and community-based strategies to ensure equitable access. Territorial transformations in Indigenous regions are shaped by intersecting ecological, political, and cultural dynamics. In San Juan Bautista Valle Nacional, Oaxaca, the construction of the Cerro de Oro dam disrupted river flows, displaced livelihoods, and triggered the decline of irrigated agriculture. This study examines the long-term impacts of these changes on land use, demographics, and cultural practices, emphasizing women’s contributions to community resilience. Using a mixed-methods approach, the study integrates geospatial analysis (1992–2021), census data (2000–2020), documentary review, and ethnographic fieldwork, including participatory mapping. Results show a shift toward seasonal rainfed agriculture, fluctuating forest cover, and a rise in female-headed households. Women have emerged as central actors in adapting to change through practices such as seed saving, agroforestry, and backstrap-loom weaving. These spatially grounded practices, enacted across varied socio-ecological zones, sustain food systems, preserve biodiversity, and reinforce biocultural memory. Although often overlooked in formal governance, women’s territorial agency plays a vital role in shaping land use and community adaptation. This research highlights the need to recognize Indigenous women’s roles in managing change and sustaining territorial heritage. Acknowledging these contributions is essential for building inclusive, culturally grounded, and sustainable development pathways in regions facing structural and environmental pressures. Full article
