Dynamic network conditions in precision agriculture motivate a scalable, privacy preserving federated learning architecture that tightly integrates ground-based edge intelligence with a space-assisted hierarchical aggregation layer. In Phase 1, heterogeneous tractors act as intelligent farm nodes that train local models, form capability- and task-aware clusters, and employ Network Quality Index (NQI)-driven scheduling, similarity-based check pointing, and compressed transmissions to cope with highly variable 3G/4G/5G connectivity. In Phase 2, cluster drivers synchronize with Low Earth Orbit (LEO) and Geostationary Earth Orbit (GEO) satellites that perform regional and global aggregation using staleness- and fairness-aware weighting, while end-to-end Salsa20 + MAC encryption preserves the confidentiality and integrity of all model updates. Across two representative tasks—nutrient prediction and crop health assessment—our full hierarchical system matches or exceeds centralized performance (e.g., AUC 0.92 vs. 0.91 for crop health) while reducing uplink traffic by ∼90% relative to vanilla FedAvg and cutting the communication energy proxy by more than 4×. The proposed fairness-aware GEO aggregation substantially narrows regional performance gaps (standard deviation of AUC across regions reduced from 0.058 to 0.017) and delivers the largest gains in low-connectivity areas (AUC 0.74 → 0.88). These results demonstrate that coupling on-farm intelligence with multi-orbit federated aggregation enables near-centralized model quality, strong privacy guarantees, and communication efficiency suitable for large-scale, connectivity-challenged agricultural deployments. Current approaches to gaming disorder prevention remain comparatively narrow, and prevention efforts are frequently underdeveloped and fragmented. Using the socio-ecological model (SEM), this qualitative study mapped frontline practitioners’ perceived obstacles and opportunities to develop a multi-level, practice-grounded framework for policy and implementation. Semi-structured interviews were conducted with 18 prevention professionals in Flanders (Dutch-speaking Belgium), recruited via purposive and snowball sampling. A hybrid inductive–deductive analysis—iterative coding guided by Layder’s adaptive theory—organized findings across SEM levels. At the public policy level, participants highlighted insufficient sustainable funding but saw potential in coordinated frameworks moving prevention beyond substance-focused agendas. At the community level, a clear knowledge gap emerged, with opportunities in integrating gaming within broader digital well-being efforts. Institutionally, the absence of practical tools and clear referral pathways was noted, in addition to high participation barriers, whereas accessible programs with targeted outreach were viewed as promising. Interpersonally, parental disengagement was common, but early involvement and pedagogical guidance were seen as key levers. At the intrapersonal level, limited self-insight and emotion regulation impeded change, while resilience, self-confidence, and offline activities were protective. This first empirical application of the SEM to gaming disorder prevention highlights the need for a multi-level, context-sensitive framework that bridges public health and digital media perspectives. A correlation between the near-surface ozone concentration in the urban atmosphere and hospitalizations of community-acquired pneumonia patients has been analyzed based on a long-term (five years) series of observations in the warm season in Moscow, Russia. The study included hospitalization records for patients over 15 years old. One of the main goals was to reveal vulnerable groups of the urban population that react most strongly to increased ozone concentrations. It has been shown that increased near-surface ozone concentrations lead to increased hospitalizations. Older people (over 60 years old) are most sensitive to the negative impact of air pollution. Women in this age group are more sensitive to the effects of ozone air pollution than men. In the middle-aged group (31–60 years), the highest correlation between the number of community-acquired pneumonia cases and the ozone level in the atmospheric surface layer, conversely, was in men, but it was still lower than the rate in older people. The young people (15–30 years old) group turned out to be insensitive to the near-surface air pollution. Full article

Ants act as keystone species in terrestrial ecosystems, providing important ecosystem services. The large-scale production and application of GO constitute a predominant contributor to its inevitable environmental dispersion. Most GO toxicity studies have focused on plants, animals, and microorganisms, with limited research on ground-dwelling ants. In the study, we used Camponotus japonicus as a model to investigate the toxic effects of GO on ants by integrating physiological characteristics, gut microbiota and transcriptome profiling. Results showed that GO exposure induced mitochondrial dysfunction, as evidenced by mitochondrial ROS accumulation and elevated mitochondrial membrane permeability. Physiological assessments revealed that GO exposure induced oxidative stress. Specifically, GO treatment significantly suppressed superoxide dismutase (SOD) and catalase (CAT) activities, while enhancing peroxidase (POD) and carboxylesterase (CarE) activities and increasing the levels of malondialdehyde (MDA) and trehalose. Gut microbiota analyses showed that GO remarkably reduced the relative abundance of beneficial bacterial symbionts (e.g., Candidatus Blochmannia) and destabilized the whole community structure. Furthermore, transcriptome profiling revealed 680 differentially expressed genes (DEGs) in the ants after GO exposure, most of which were significantly enriched in pathways associated with oxidative phosphorylation. This study suggests that GO may compromise ant-mediated ecosystem function and provides a reference for understanding the environmental risks of GO. Our findings also offer new insights for protecting the ecosystem services of ants. Full article

The Sanjiang Plain hosts the largest freshwater wetland in Northeastern China and plays a critical role in regional climate stability. However, climate change and human activities have degraded the wetland, forming a successional gradient from the original flooded wetland to dry shrub and forest vegetation with a lower ground water level. This degradation has altered soil microbial structure and functions, reducing ecological and socio-economic benefits. Along this successional gradient, we used Biolog-ECO plates combined with soil enzyme assays (catalase, urease, sucrase, and acid phosphatase) to assess the dynamics of microbial carbon metabolic activity, measured by average well color development (AWCD). The results showed a systematic decline in AWCD values with advancing succession, revealing a pronounced reduction in overall microbial metabolic activity during wetland degradation. This trend correlated with loss of soil moisture, organic carbon, and nitrogen nutrients. Microbial communities in early successional wetland stages (i.e., original natural wetland and wetland edge) preferred labile carbon sources (e.g., carbohydrates, amino acids), while forested stages favored relatively more structural (e.g., polymers, phenolic compounds). These findings indicate that vegetation succession regulates microbial carbon metabolism by modifying soil physicochemical properties, providing insights for wetland restoration. Full article

Payments for Ecosystem Services (PESs) have become a central instrument in global biodiversity finance, yet endangered species-specific PESs remain rare and poorly understood in implementation terms. Taiwan provides a revealing case: a three-year program paying farmers to conserve four threatened species—Prionailurus bengalensis, Lutra lutra, Tyto longimembris, and Hydrophasianus chirurgus—in working farmland across Taiwan and Kinmen island. Through semi-structured interviews with farmers, residents, and local conservation actors, we examine how payments are interpreted, rationalized, enacted, and emotionally experienced at the ground level. This study adopts Colaizzi’s data analysis method, the primary advantage of which lies in its ability to systematically transform fragmented and emotive interview narratives into a logically structured essential description. This is achieved through the rigorous extraction of significant statements and the subsequent synthesis of thematic clusters. Participants reported willingness to continue not only because subsidies offset losses, but because rarity, community pride, and the visible arc of “we helped this creature survive” became internalized rewards. NGOs amplified this shift by translating science into farm practice and “normalizing” coexistence. In practice, conservation work became a social project—identifying threats, altering routines, and defending habitat as a shared civic act. This study does not estimate treatment-effect size; instead, it delivers mechanistic insight at a live policy moment, as Taiwan expands PESs and the OECD pushes incentive reform. The finding is simple and strategically important: endangered-species PESs work best where payments trigger meaning—not where payments replace it. Full article

Amid escalating ecological degradation, social fragmentation, and rising mental health challenges—especially in rural and agricultural communities—there is an urgent need to reimagine systems that support both planetary and human flourishing. This viewpoint examines an emerging paradigm in agriculture that emphasizes the role of farmers’ inner development in fostering practices that enhance ecological health, community well-being, and a resilient food system. A key goal is to draw more academic attention to growing community calls for more holistic, relational, and spiritually grounded approaches to food systems as an important focus for ongoing research. Drawing on diverse case studies from Japan, India, and Europe, we examine how small-scale and natural farming initiatives are integrating inner development, universal human values, and ecological consciousness. These case studies were developed and/or refined through a program led by the Conscious Food Systems Alliance (CoFSA), an initiative of the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) that seeks to integrate inner transformation with sustainable food systems change. The initiatives are intended as illustrative examples of how agriculture can transcend its conventional, anthropocentric role as a food production system to become a site for cultivating deeper self-awareness, spiritual connection, and regenerative relationships with nature. Participants in these cases reported significant shifts in mindset—from materialistic and extractive worldviews to more relational and value-driven orientations rooted in care, cooperation, and sustainability. Core practices such as mindfulness, experiential learning, and spiritual ecology helped reframe farming as a holistic process that nurtures both land and life. These exploratory case studies suggest that when farmers are supported in aligning with inner values and natural systems, they become empowered as agents of systemic change. By linking personal growth with planetary stewardship, these models offer pathways toward more integrated, life-affirming approaches to agriculture and future academic research. Full article

Functional food plays an increasingly important role in shaping healthy dietary habits by integrating health-promoting components into consumers’ everyday diets and helping reduce food waste. Products developed using by-products and raw material streams from food processing can support the principles of the circular economy (CE) by improving resource efficiency and lowering the environmental footprint of the food system. In Poland, as in many countries worldwide, functional food is a rapidly growing category that can contribute to public health and serve as a driver of economic development. However, the excessive and scientifically unsupported use of the term “functional food” for marketing purposes may mislead consumers and weaken trust in this product group. From a CE perspective, transparent communication and informed consumer choices are essential, as they promote environmentally responsible behaviors and support sustainable production models. The aim of this study was to assess the level of knowledge about functional food among residents of Eastern Poland, which is a less industrialized and predominantly agricultural region. The analysis focused on awareness of health benefits, consumption frequency, consumer attitudes, and interest in educational initiatives promoting functional food within CE principles. The study also examined whether consumers associate functional food with sustainability-oriented practices. The findings offer insights for educational and marketing strategies grounded in scientific evidence and highlight the potential of functional food in building a sustainable, resource-efficient food system. Urban resilience has emerged as a critical paradigm for addressing the intertwined challenges of climate change, rapid urbanization, and social inequality, positioning green public spaces as catalysts for social, ecological, and institutional transformation. This article presents a systematic review conducted under the PRISMA 2020 guidelines, examining how collaborative and community participation influenced transformative urban resilience in green public spaces between 2021 and 2025. A total of 6179 records were initially identified across ScienceDirect and MDPI (last search: July 2025), of which 26 empirical studies met the inclusion criteria (peer-reviewed, empirical, published 2021–2025). Methodological rigor was strengthened through the application of the Mixed Methods Appraisal Tool (MMAT, 2018) and confidence in qualitative evidence was assessed using the GRADE-CERQual approach, enhancing transparency and reliability. Data extraction and synthesis followed a theoretical-methodological coding framework, allowing for the comparison of participatory strategies, typologies of green spaces, resilience dimensions, and applied instruments. The results show that multi-actor co-management, co-design, and community self-organization are the most frequent participatory strategies, while urban green infrastructure, pocket parks, and urban gardens constitute the predominant spatial contexts. Socio-ecological and social-participatory resilience emerged as dominant theoretical perspectives, with qualitative and mixed-methods designs prevailing across studies. Evidence synthesis through GRADE-CERQual identified seven key pathways—multi-actor co-management, Nature-based Solutions, community-based actions, social equity, cultural identity, institutional innovation, and planned densification—each contributing differently to resilience dimensions. Overall, the findings highlight that transformative resilience depends on deep, inclusive participatory processes, multi-level governance, and the integration of social, ecological, and cultural dimensions. Despite the heterogeneity of designs and unequal data adequacy, this review confirms that transformative urban resilience is a co-produced process grounded in community action, ecological sustainability, and collaborative governance. Strengthening underexplored areas—technological innovation, cultural resilience, and standardized methodological instruments—is essential for advancing comparative research and practice. Full article

In recent years, with the improvement of unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) performance, various applications have been explored. In environments such as disaster areas, where existing infrastructure may be damaged, alternative uplink communication for transmitting observation data from UAVs to the ground station (GS) is critical. However, conventional mobile ad hoc network (MANET) routing protocols do not sufficiently account for GS-oriented traffic or the highly mobile UAV topology. This study proposed a flying ad hoc network (FANET) routing protocol that introduces a control option called GS flood, where the GS periodically disseminates routing information, enabling each UAV to efficiently acquire fresh source routes to the GS. Evaluation using NS-3 in a disaster scenario confirmed that the proposed method achieves a higher packet delivery ratio and practical latency compared to the representative MANET routing protocols, namely DSR, AODV, and OLSR, while operating with fewer control IP packets than existing methods. Furthermore, although the multihop throughput between UAVs and the GS in the proposed method plateaued at approximately 40% of the physical-layer maximum, it demonstrated performance exceeding realistic satellite uplink capacities ranging from several hundred kbps to several Mbps. Background/Objectives: Community violence remains a pervasive public health challenge that disproportionately affects Black youth, with lasting impacts on physical and mental health. Traditional models often conceptualize resilience as individual “bounce back” capacity, overlooking how adaptation unfolds amid chronic violence and structural inequity. This study examined how Black youth and trauma clinicians understand, navigate, and redefine resilience within contexts of ongoing community violence exposure. Methods: Using a phenomenological qualitative design, the study drew on semi-structured interviews and focus groups with Black youth and clinicians participating in a community violence trauma recovery program in Chicago, Illinois. Data were analyzed thematically to identify patterns in how resilience was described, practiced, and supported. Results: Black youth redefined resilience through adaptive survival strategies—such as hypervigilance, avoidance, and emotional regulation—that functioned as protective responses to continuous threat. Clinicians recognized resilience as relational and context-dependent but reported limited training to address trauma rooted in chronic, community-level conditions. Both groups highlighted the role of collective and structural supports, including family, peers, and community networks, in sustaining adaptation. Conclusions: Findings highlight the need to expand trauma-informed care beyond individual treatment to address structural conditions that perpetuate community violence. Integrating ecological and culturally grounded models of resilience into clinical training and community programming can improve support for Black youth navigating chronic exposure to violence. This article examines the relationship between jihād and the protection of non-Muslim places of worship in early Islam. Drawing primarily on Qurʾānic verses 22:39–41 and the Covenants of the Prophet, it employs a synchronically comparative framework that analyzes a broad corpus of textual sources, seeking to reconstruct how the early Muslim worldview understood the justification for jihād. It also examines the norms governing conduct after conflict, particularly in relation to treaty-making. The article attempts to make sense of Q22:39–41 within the broader landscape of late antiquity, which was marked by religious persecution and the destruction of sanctuaries under Byzantine and Sasanian rule. The study highlights how clear rules of engagement were articulated in early Islam, including limits on violence and the consequences of treaty violation. It argues that the motivations behind the early conquests cannot be reduced to material interests but rather were guided by a theological and ideological vision linking conquest with the establishment of a just peace, one grounded in the protection of communities, faith, and places of worship through a covenantal paradigm. Optical Fiber Composite Overhead Ground Wire (OPGW) cables serve dual functions in power systems, lightning protection and critical communication infrastructure for real-time grid monitoring. Accurate OPGW identification during UAV inspections is essential to prevent miscuts and maintain power-communication functionality. However, detecting small, twisted OPGW segments among visually similar ground wires is challenging, particularly given the computational and energy constraints of edge-based UAV platforms. We propose OPGW-DETR, a lightweight detector based on the D-FINE framework, optimized for low-power operation to enable reliable detection. The model incorporates two key innovations: multi-scale convolutional global average pooling (MC-GAP), which fuses spatial features across multiple receptive fields and integrates spectrally motivated features for enhanced fine-grained representation, and a hybrid gating mechanism that dynamically balances global and spatial features while preserving original information through residual connections. By enabling real-time inference with minimal energy consumption, OPGW-DETR addresses UAV battery and bandwidth limitations while ensuring continuous detection capability. Evaluated on a custom OPGW dataset, the S-scale model achieves 3.9% improvement in average precision (AP) and 2.5% improvement in AP50 over the baseline. By mitigating misidentification risks, these gains improve communication reliability. As a result, uninterrupted grid monitoring becomes feasible in low-power UAV inspection scenarios, where accurate detection is essential to ensure communication integrity and safeguard the power grid. Every act of design tells a story about who belongs, who is seen, and who is heard. This paper looks at how participatory design-based research (PDR), practiced with relational care and reflexivity, can help shift interactions among marginalized youth from urban Indigenous and newcomer immigrant communities in Canada from othering toward understanding. Moving beyond surface-level celebrations of multiculturalism, the study frames design as a relational and ethical practice, one that surfaces assumptions, holds space for difference, and creates openings for intercultural dialogue. The study draws on a series of design circles (d.circles) in which youth co-created visual communication artefacts reflecting their lived experiences. These artefacts became catalysts for dialogue, enabling participants to challenge stereotypes, articulate concerns, and develop shared perspectives. Reflexivity was integral to the process, guiding both participants and the facilitator to consider power, positionality, and relational accountability throughout. Findings show that participatory design, grounded in Indigenous relational principles and participatory action research, can unsettle dominant narratives, foster mutual recognition, and support youth-led meaning-making. This work contributes to emerging conversations that position design thinking as a practice of ethical engagement rather than a tool for problem-solving alone. The learnings from this study show how critically practiced PDR can cultivate more inclusive and socially responsive pathways for intercultural understanding to take shape. Full article

With the development of 6G technology, conventional wireless communication systems are increasingly unable to meet stringent performance requirements in complex and dynamic environments. Therefore, integrated sensing and communication (ISAC), which enables efficient spectrum sharing, has attracted growing attention as a promising solution. This paper provides a comprehensive survey of reconfigurable intelligent surface (RIS)-unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV)-assisted ISAC systems. It first introduces a four-dimensional quantitative evaluation framework grounded in information theory. Then, we provide a structured overview of coordination mechanisms between different types of RIS and UAV platforms within ISAC architectures. Furthermore, we analyze the application characteristics of various multiple access schemes in these systems. Finally, the main technical challenges and potential future research directions are discussed and analyzed. Full article
