The growing need to improve the management of end-of-life vehicle (ELV) waste and mitigate its environmental impact is a global concern. One promising approach to enhancing the recyclability of these vehicles is leveraging synergies between the automotive and construction industries as part of a circular economy strategy. In this context, ELV waste emerges as a valuable source of secondary raw materials, enabling the development of sustainable innovations that capitalize on its physical and mechanical properties. This paper aims to develop and evaluate construction industry composites incorporating waste from ELV carpets, with a focus on maintaining or enhancing performance compared to conventional materials. To achieve this, an experimental program was designed to assess cementitious composites, specifically subfloor mortars, incorporating automotive carpet waste (ACW). The results demonstrate that, beyond the physical and mechanical properties of the developed composites, the dynamic stiffness significantly improved across all tested waste incorporation levels. This finding highlights the potential of these composites as an alternative material for impact noise insulation in flooring systems. From an academic perspective, this research advances knowledge on the application of ACW in cement-based composites for construction. In terms of managerial contributions, two key market opportunities emerge: (1) the commercial exploitation of composites produced with ELV carpet waste and (2) the development of a network of environmental service providers to ensure a stable waste supply chain for innovative and sustainable products. Both strategies contribute to reducing landfill disposal and mitigating the environmental impact of ELV waste, reinforcing the principles of the circular economy. Full article

Introduction. Larvae of the insect Hermetia illucens can represent an alternative source for low-molecular-weight chitosan (CS) production compared with CS from crustaceans (CScrustac), making it appealing in terms of pharmaceutical applications. Hence, the performances of CSlarvae and CScrustac were compared herein by investigating the in vitro features of nanoparticles (NPs) made from each polysaccharide and administered with the antioxidant quercetin (QUE). Methods. X-ray diffraction and FT-IR spectroscopy enabled the identification of each type of CS. Following the ionic gelation technique and using sulfobutylether-β-cyclodextrin as a cross-linking agent, NPs were easily obtained. Results. Physicochemical data, release studies in PBS, and the evaluation of antioxidant effects via the 1,1-diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) test were studied for both CSlarvae and CScrustac. QUE-loaded NP sizes ranged from 180 to 547 nm, and zeta potential values were between +7.5 and +39.3 mV. In vitro QUE release in PBS was faster from QUE-CSlarvae NPs than from CScrustac, and high antioxidant activity—according to the DPPH test—was observed for all tested NP formulations. Discussion. The agar diffusion assay, referring to Escherichia coli and Micrococcus flavus, as well as the microdilution assay, showed the best performance as antimicrobial formulations in the case of QUE-CSlarvae NPs. QUE-CSlarvae NPs can represent a promising vehicle for QUE, releasing it in a sustained manner, and, relevantly, the synergism noticed between QUE and CSlarvae resulted in a final antimicrobial product. Conclusions. New perspectives for low-molecular-weight CS are disclosed by adopting renewable sources from insects instead of the commercial CScrustac. Full article

Pitaya (Selenicereus undatus) is a long-day climbing cactus that blooms in waves mostly on 1-year old, succulent leafless shoots called cladodes. Nonetheless, pitaya can also bloom on new-year growth if the buds of the cladodes are mature enough and competent for flower induction. Here, we tested, during two consecutive years, whether early pruning could have a positive effect on promoting more flowering waves, better fruiting, and heavier yield of ‘Korean White’ pitaya cultivated in unheated greenhouses of Southeastern Spain. The results show that pruning in January instead of March did not consistently modify the reproductive behavior of ‘Korean White’ pitaya in our conditions. Therefore, no significant effects on the number of blooming waves, flowering intensity, fruit set, quality or yield were observed. The only positive effect, not always significant, was an increase in fruit size that led to better fruit distribution into commercial categories in one out of the two experimental seasons. The lack of effect of early pruning was attributed to the prevalent low temperatures during winter in Spain. The results, however, suggest it is worthwhile exploring whether greenhouse heating with temperatures above pitaya’s base temperature may have the desired effects on increasing blooming waves. The profitability of this practice have to be carefully assessed. Full article

The Evolving Treatment Landscape for the Elderly Multiple Myeloma Patient: From Quad Regimens to T-Cell Engagers and CAR-T

Multiple myeloma (MM) is predominantly a disease of the elderly. In recent years, a surge of highly effective plasma cell therapies has revolutionized the care of elderly multiple myeloma (MM) patients, for whom frailty and age-related competing causes of mortality determine management. Traditionally, the treatment of newly diagnosed elderly patients has centered on doublet or triplet combinations composed of immunomodulators (IMIDs), proteasome inhibitors (PIs), anti-CD38 monoclonal antibodies (mAbs), and corticosteroids producing median progression-free survival (PFS) rates between 34 and 62 months. However, recently, a series of large phase III clinical trials examining quadruplet regimens of PIs, IMIDs, corticosteroids, and anti-CD38 mAbs have shown exceptional outcomes, with median PFS exceeding 60 months, albeit with higher rates of peripheral neuropathy (≥Grade 2: 27% vs. 10%) when PIs and IMIDs are combined, and infections (≥Grade 3: 40% vs. 29–41%) with the addition of anti-CD38mAbs. The development of T-cell redirecting therapies including T-cell engagers (TCEs) and CAR-T cells has further expanded the therapeutic arsenal. TCEs have shown exceptional activity in relapsed disease and are being explored in the newly diagnosed setting with promising early results. However, concerns remain regarding the logistical challenges of step-up dosing, which often necessitates inpatient admission, the infectious risks, and the financial burden associated with TCEs in elderly patients. CAR-T, the most potent commercially available therapy for MM, offers the potential of a ‘one and done’ approach. However, its application to elderly patients has been tempered by significant concerns of cytokine release syndrome, early and delayed neurological toxicity, and its overall tolerability in frail patients. Robust data in frail patients are still needed. How CAR-T and TCEs will be sequenced among the growing therapeutic armamentarium for elderly MM patients remains to be determined. This review explores the safety, efficacy, cost, and logistical barriers associated with the above treatments in elderly MM patients. Full article

This study investigated the effects of reducing organic trace minerals below commercial inclusion levels and compared them with both low-dose and commercial levels of inorganic trace minerals, focusing on growth performance, carcass traits, tibia characteristics, oxidative stress (superoxide dismutase [SOD] and malondialdehyde [MDA]), and immune response (serum IgG) in broilers. A total of 384 one-day-old Ross 308 chicks were randomly assigned to three dietary treatments: (1) commercial-level inorganic trace minerals (ILI; Zn 100 ppm; Cu 15 ppm; Fe 100 ppm; Mn 80 ppm; Se 0.2 ppm; I 3 ppm); (2) low-level organic trace minerals (LLO; Zn 30 ppm; Cu 4 ppm; Fe 11 ppm; Mn 30 ppm; Se 0.225 ppm; I 3 ppm), and (3) low-level inorganic trace minerals (LLI; Zn 30 ppm; Cu 4 ppm; Fe 11 ppm; Mn 30 ppm; Se 0.2 ppm; I 3 ppm). Each treatment consisted of eight replicates with 16 birds per replicate, and diets were provided in two phases: starter (days 1–21) and grower (days 22–35). The results showed that the LLO group demonstrated a significantly improved feed conversion ratio (FCR) during the starter phase, 2.4% better than that of the ILI and LLI groups (p = 0.02). Additionally, filet and thigh muscle yields in the LLO group were higher by 11.9% (p = 0.03) and 13.9% (p = 0.02), respectively, compared to the ILI group. Other carcass traits, as well as pH and drip loss, were not significantly affected. However, tibia breaking strength at day 35 was 15.1% lower in the LLO group compared to the ILI group (p = 0.02). No significant differences were observed in oxidative stress markers or IgG levels among groups. This study demonstrated that reducing the inclusion level of inorganic trace minerals did not negatively affect broiler growth performance, whereas supplementation with low levels of organic trace minerals improved both growth performance and carcass quality. Although cemented carbides have been manufactured by the powder metallurgy (P/M) technology for over a century now, systematic developmental efforts are still underway. In the present study, tool life improvements in metal grooving applications are the key objective. Four PVD-coated cemented carbides compositions, dedicated to groove steel, stainless steel, cast iron, and aluminium alloys, have been newly designed, along with their manufacturing conditions. Physical, mechanical and chemical characteristics—such as sintered density, modulus of elasticity, hardness, fracture toughness, WC grain size, and the chemical composition of the substrate material, as well as the chemical composition, microhardness, structure, and thickness of the coatings—have been studied. A series of grooving tests have also been conducted to assess whether modifications to the thus far marketed tool materials, tool geometries, and coatings can improve cutting performance. In order to compare the laboratory and application properties of the investigated materials with currently produced by reputable companies, commercial inserts have also been tested. The experimental results obtained indicate that the newly developed grooving inserts exhibit excellent microstructural characteristics, high hardness, fracture toughness, and wear resistance and that they show slightly longer tool life compared to the commercial ones. This paper measures the post-treatment effects of Central Bank Digital Currencies (CBDCs) on mobile money and outstanding loans from commercial banks as a percentage of the GDP in Nigeria and the Bahamas, respectively, from the perspective of financial inclusion. The literature on the topic has primarily focused on the technological specifications of CBDCs and their potential future implementation. This article addresses a gap in the empirical literature by examining the effects of CBDCs. To this end, a Synthetic Control Method (SCM) is applied to the Bahamas (SandDollar) and Nigeria (eNaira) to construct a counterfactual scenario and assess the impact of CBDCs on mobile money and commercial bank loans. Nigeria’s mobile money transactions as a percentage of the GDP increased significantly compared to the synthetic control group, suggesting a notable positive effect of the eNaira. Conversely, in the Bahamas, actual performance fell below the synthetic control, implying that SandDollar may have contributed to a decline in outstanding loans. These results suggest that CBDCs could pose a “deposit substitution risk” for commercial banks. However, they may also enhance the performance of other Fintech tools, as observed in the case of mobile money. As CBDC implementations worldwide remain in their early stages, their long-term effects require further analysis. Full article

Urban Shrinkage in the Qinling–Daba Mountains: Spatiotemporal Patterns and Influencing Factors

With the global economic restructuring and the consequent population mobility, urban shrinkage has become a common phenomenon. The Qinling–Daba Mountains, a zone with a key ecological function in China, have long experienced population decline and functional degradation. Clarifying the dynamics and influencing factors of urban shrinkage plays a vital role in supporting the sustainable development of the region. This study, using permanent resident population growth rates and nighttime light data, classified cities in the region into four spatial patterns: expansion–growth, intensive growth, expansion–shrinkage, and intensive shrinkage. It further examined the spatial characteristics of shrinkage across four periods (2005–2010, 2010–2015, 2015–2020, and 2020–2022). A Geographically and Temporally Weighted Regression (GTWR) model was applied to examine core influencing factors and their spatiotemporal heterogeneity. The results indicated the following: (1) The dominant pattern of urban shrinkage in the Qinling–Daba Mountains shifted from expansion–growth to expansion–shrinkage, highlighting the paradox of population decline alongside continued spatial expansion. (2) Three critical indicators significantly influenced urban shrinkage: the number of students enrolled in general secondary schools (X5), the per capita disposable income of urban residents (X7), and the number of commercial and residential service facilities (X12), with their effects exhibiting significant spatiotemporal heterogeneity. Temporally, X12 was the most influential factor in 2005 and 2010, while in 2015, 2020, and 2022, X5 and X7 became the dominant factors. Spatially, X7 significantly affected both eastern and western areas; X5’s influence was most pronounced in the west; and X12 had the greatest impact in the east. This study explored the patterns and underlying drivers of urban shrinkage in underdeveloped areas, aiming to inform sustainable development practices in regions facing comparable challenges. The use of eco-organic ingredients as a source of protein in aquaculture diets needs important attention due to the growing demand for organic seafood products. The present study evaluated the effects of fish meal substitution by different organic ingredients on the growth, body composition, retention efficiency, enzyme activity, and nutrient digestibility of white shrimp Penaeus vannamei. The four dietary formulations tested were formulated with organic ingredients and the fish meal was replaced by the following organic protein meals: Iberian pig viscera meal (PIG), trout by-product meal (TRO), insect meal (FLY), and organic vegetable meal (WHT), in addition to a control diet (CON) that included 15% fish meal. A growth trial was carried out for 83 days, raising 1 g shrimp to commercial size (20 g). Shrimp were stocked at 167 shrimp/m3 (15 individuals per 90 L tank). The results showed that the growth obtained by shrimp fed with TRO (19.27 g) and PIG (19.35 g) were similar in weight gain to the control diet (20.76 g), while FLY (16.04 g) and WHT (16.73 g) meals resulted in a significant lower final weight. The FLY diet showed significantly lower protein digestibility (68.89%) compared to the CON, PIG, TRO, and WHT diets, and significantly higher trypsin activity (0.17 mU/g) compared to shrimp fed with the PIG, TRO, and WHT diets. Shrimp fed with WHT have a significantly lower body weight percentage of protein (19.69%) than shrimp fed with the WHT and TRO diets, and some significant differences in dietary aminoacidic levels affecting amino acid body composition. These results indicate that Iberian pig viscera and trout by-product meal can successfully replace fish meal in Pacific white shrimp aquaculture. Full article

Assessing Canine Parvovirus Vaccine Performance in Puppies with Maternally Derived Antibody: An Improved Study Design

Background/Objectives: Typically, studies aiming to assess the ability of canine parvovirus (CPV) vaccines to immunise puppies with maternally derived antibody (MDA) are undertaken using group-housed puppies. Since live attenuated vaccine virus is invariably shed in the faeces, this can result in repeated oral re-exposure and puppies which failed to respond to the initial vaccination may respond instead to shed vaccine virus in the environment, thus artificially enhancing the efficacy of the vaccine. This problem can be avoided by adopting a pair-housed study design where one vaccinated pup is housed with one unvaccinated sentinel. Using this design, we examine the capability of four commercially available canine parvovirus vaccines to immunise MDA-positive pups. Methods: Thirty-four 6-week-old puppies born to vaccinated dams were divided into four vaccine groups with similar MDA ranges. Within each group puppies were paired based on matching MDA titres, and each pair was housed in separate biocontainment accommodation. In each pair, the pup with the highest MDA was vaccinated and the other left as an unvaccinated sentinel. All vaccinates were given a single dose of one of the vaccines. Vaccinates and sentinels were then bled every 2–4 days and CPV antibody was measured. Daily rectal swabs were also collected from all pups to identify any shed vaccinal CPV. Results: All the pups vaccinated with Nobivac DP PLUS seroconverted, with significantly higher antibody titres compared to the pups in other vaccine groups, all shed vaccine virus, and all bar one of the sentinel pups seroconverted. In the other groups, only vaccinated pups with lower levels of MDA seroconverted and shed vaccine virus but none of the sentinel pups seroconverted. Conclusions: Different canine parvovirus vaccines differ in their ability to replicate in and immunise puppies with MDA, the levels of which may vary widely between individuals. The shedding of vaccinal CPV is an important consideration when designing studies to demonstrate efficacy in MDA-positive puppies. Full article

In the ILCA class, there is an increasing demand for precise in-field measurement and analysis of physical properties beyond well-established velocity and course metrics. The low-cost setup presented in this study consists of a combination of commercially available sensor systems, such as the AdMos sensor for IMU and GNSS measurement, in combination with custom measurement systems for rudder and mast rotations using fully waterproofed potentiometers. Data streams are synchronized using GNSS time stamping for streamlined analysis. The resulting analysis presents a selection of 12 upwind tacks, with corresponding path overlays, detailed timeseries data, and performance metrics. The system has demonstrated the value of extended data analysis of in situ data with an elite ILCA 7 sailor. The addition of rudder and mast rotations has enabled enhanced analysis of on-water maneuvers for single-handed Olympic dinghies like the ILCA 7, on a level of detail previously reserved for simulated environments. Automated quality control plays a critical role in modern industries, particularly in environments that handle large volumes of packaged products requiring fast, accurate, and consistent inspections. This work presents an anomaly detection system for candle jars commonly used in industrial and commercial applications, where obtaining labeled defective samples is challenging. Two anomaly detection strategies are explored: (1) a baseline model using convolutional neural networks (CNNs) as an end-to-end classifier and (2) a hybrid approach where features extracted by CNNs are fed into One-Class classification (OCC) algorithms, including One-Class SVM (OCSVM), One-Class Isolation Forest (OCIF), One-Class Local Outlier Factor (OCLOF), One-Class Elliptic Envelope (OCEE), One-Class Autoencoder (OCAutoencoder), and Support Vector Data Description (SVDD). Both strategies are trained primarily on non-defective samples, with only a limited number of anomalous examples used for evaluation. Experimental results show that both the pure CNN model and the hybrid methods achieve excellent classification performance. The end-to-end CNN reached 100% accuracy, precision, recall, F1-score, and AUC. The best-performing hybrid model CNN-based feature extraction followed by OCIF also achieved 100% across all evaluation metrics, confirming the effectiveness and robustness of the proposed approach. Other OCC algorithms consistently delivered strong results, with all metrics above 95%, indicating solid generalization from predominantly normal data. This approach demonstrates strong potential for quality inspection tasks in scenarios with scarce defective data. Its ability to generalize effectively from mostly normal samples makes it a practical and valuable solution for real-world industrial inspection systems. Future work will focus on optimizing real-time inference and exploring advanced feature extraction techniques to further enhance detection performance. Full article

High semen quality is vital for reproductive success in the swine industry; however, seasonal fluctuations often compromise this quality. The molecular mechanism underlying these seasonal effects on semen quality remains largely unclear. This study employed untargeted metabolomic profiling of boar seminal plasma (SP) to identify metabolites and metabolic pathways associated with semen quality during the summer and winter months. Semen samples were collected from mature Duroc boars at a commercial boar stud and classified as Passed or Failed based on motility and morphology. SP from five samples per group was analyzed using ultra-high-performance liquid chromatography–mass spectrometry (UHPLC-MS). In total, 373 metabolites were detected in positive ion mode and 478 in negative ion mode. Several differentially expressed metabolites (DEMs) were identified, including ergothioneine, indole-3-methyl acetate, and avocadyne in the summer, as well as LysoPC, dopamine, and betaine in the winter. These metabolites are associated with key sperm functions, including energy metabolism, antioxidant defense, and capacitation. KEGG pathway analysis indicated enrichment in starch and sucrose metabolism, pyrimidine metabolism, and amino acid metabolism across the seasons. Overall, the results reveal that SP metabolomic profiles vary with the season, thereby influencing semen quality. The identified metabolites may serve as potential biomarkers for assessing semen quality and enhancing reproductive efficiency in swine production. Full article

The efficiency of electric motors is highly dependent on their operating temperature, with lower temperatures contributing to enhanced performance, reliability, and extended service life. This study presents a comprehensive review of state-of-the-art cooling technologies and evaluates their impact on the thermal behavior of a commercial motor–generator system in high-demand applications. A baseline model of a permanent magnet synchronous motor (PMSM) was developed using MotorCAD 2023® software, which was supported by reverse engineering techniques to accurately replicate the motor’s physical and thermal characteristics. Subsequently, multiple cooling strategies were simulated under consistent operating conditions to assess their effectiveness. These strategies include conventional axial water jackets as well as advanced oil-based methods such as shaft cooling and direct oil spray to the windings. The integration of these systems in hybrid configurations was also explored to maximize thermal efficiency. Simulation results reveal that hybrid cooling significantly reduces the temperature of critical components such as stator windings and permanent magnets. This reduction in thermal stress improves current efficiency, power output, and torque capacity, enabling reliable motor operation across a broader range of speeds and under sustained high-load conditions. The findings highlight the effectiveness of hybrid cooling systems in optimizing both thermal management and operational performance of electric machines. Full article

Broth cooking is a traditional pretreatment and ripening strategy for high-commercial-value dehydrated marine food, effectively enhancing its texture and rehydration properties. In this work, we characterized the structural information of Maillard reaction products (MRPs) derived from beef scrap stock and investigated their effects on the texture and rehydration performance of dehydrated abalone. The optical and structural properties of the MRPs were analyzed using X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), X-ray diffraction (XRD), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), and fluorescence spectroscopy. These MRPs showed osmosis in abalone processing including pretreatment and drying. Low-field nuclear magnetic resonance (LF-NMR) results revealed that MRP pretreatment improved the moisture migration and physicochemical properties of dehydrated abalone. These findings suggest that MRPs, owing to their high osmotic efficiency and nanoscale size, could serve as promising food additives and potential alternatives to traditional penetrating agents in the food industry, enhancing the rehydration performance of dried seafood and reducing quality deterioration.
