Impact of COVID-19 on Mental Health in Nursing Students and Non-Nursing Students: A Cross-Sectional Study

Background/Objective: Nursing and non-nursing students experience high stress levels, making them susceptible to mental health issues. This study compared stress, anxiety, and depression between these two groups after 2 years of the COVID-19 pandemic. Additionally, it explored the relationship between perceived helplessness, self-efficacy, and symptoms of mental stress and strain resulting from challenging internship conditions for nursing students. Methods: This cross-sectional study included 154 nursing students (mean age = 22.43 years) and 291 non-nursing students (mean age = 27.7 years). Data were collected using the Depression Anxiety Stress Scales (DASS-21), Perceived Stress Scale-10 (PSS-10), and a questionnaire on mental stress and strain. Results: Nursing students reported significantly higher scores in the DASS-21 subscales depression (ηp2 = 0.016) and anxiety (ηp2 = 0.037), and global stress (PSS-10; ηp2 = 0.029) compared to non-nursing students, but no significant difference on the DASS-21 Stress subscale. The observed group differences in the present study may be partially attributed to group differences in demographic factors. Helplessness correlated strongly with nearly all scales of mental stress and strain during internships (all p’s < 0.001), while self-efficacy showed a strong negative correlation with non-occupational difficulties, health impairment, and emotional problems (all p’s < 0.001). Conclusions: Nursing students experience elevated depression, anxiety, and perceived stress levels compared to non-nursing students. Stronger feelings of helplessness and lower confidence in their ability to overcome challenges were strongly correlated with mental stress and strain during clinical training. Targeted interventions such as cognitive behavioral training and stress management should be integrated into nursing curricula to enhance resilience and coping strategies. Full article

Evaluation of Myocardial Protection in Prolonged Aortic Cross-Clamp Times: Del Nido and HTK Cardioplegia in Adult Cardiac Surgery

Background and Objectives: Effective myocardial protection is essential for successful cardiac surgery outcomes, especially in complex and prolonged procedures. To this end, Del Nido (DN) and histidine-tryptophan-ketoglutarate (HTK) cardioplegia solutions are widely used; however, their comparative efficacy in adult surgeries with prolonged aortic cross-clamp (ACC) times remains unclear. This study aimed to compare the efficacy and safety of DN and HTK for myocardial protection during prolonged ACC times in adult cardiac surgery and to define clinically relevant thresholds. Materials and Methods: This retrospective study included a total of 320 adult patients who underwent cardiac surgery under cardiopulmonary bypass (CPB) with an aortic cross-clamp time ≥ 90 min. Data were collected from the medical records of elective adult cardiac surgery cases performed at a single center between 2019 and 2025. Patients were categorized into two groups based on the type of cardioplegia received: Del Nido (n = 160) and HTK (n = 160). The groups were compared using 1:1 propensity score matching. Clinical and biochemical outcomes—including troponin I (TnI), CK-MB, lactate levels, incidence of low cardiac output syndrome (LCOS), and need for mechanical circulatory support—were analyzed between the two cardioplegia groups. Subgroup analyses were performed according to ACC duration (90–120, 120–150, 150–180 and >180 min). The predictive threshold of ACC duration for each complication was determined by ROC analysis, followed by the analysis of independent predictors of each endpoint by multivariate logistic regression. Results: Intraoperative cardioplegia volume and transfusion requirements were lower in the DN group (p < 0.05). HTK was associated with lower TnI levels and less intra-aortic balloon pump (IABP) requirement at ACC times exceeding 180 min. Markers of myocardial injury were lower in patients with an ACC duration of 120–150 min in favor of HTK. The propensity for ventricular fibrillation after ACC was significantly lower in the DN group. Significantly lower postoperative sodium levels were observed in the HTK group. Prolonged ACC duration was an independent risk factor for LCOS (odds ratio [OR]: 1.023, p < 0.001), VIS > 15 (OR, 1.015; p < 0.001), IABP requirement (OR: 1.020, p = 0.002), and early mortality (OR: 1.016, p = 0.048). Postoperative ejection fraction (EF), troponin I, and CK-MB levels were associated with the development of LCOS and a VIS > 15. Furthermore, according to ROC analysis, HTK cardioplegia was able to tolerate ACC for up to a longer duration in terms of certain complications, suggesting a higher physiological tolerance to ischemia. Conclusions: ACC duration is a strong predictor of major adverse outcomes in adult cardiac surgeries. Although DN cardioplegia is effective and economically advantageous for shorter procedures, HTK may provide superior myocardial protection in operations with long ACC duration. This study supports the need to individualize cardioplegia choice according to ACC duration. Further prospective studies are needed to establish standard dosing protocols and to optimize cardioplegia selection according to surgical duration and complexity. Full article

The integration of Inquiry-Based Learning (IBL) and mobile technologies can transform science education, offering experimentation opportunities to students from budget-constrained schools. This study investigates the efficacy of smartphone-assisted experimentation (SAE) within IBL to enhance pre-service science teachers’ understanding of human physiology and presents a newly developed and validated rubric for assessing their scientific skills. Students (N = 286) from a Science and Mathematics Teacher Education Program participated in a summative IBL activity (“Investigating the Human Physiology”—iHPhys) where they designed experimental projects using smartphone applications to collect body sign data. The scoring rubric, assessing seven criteria including hypothesis formulation, methodological design, data presentation, and conclusion writing, was validated as substantial to almost perfect inter-rater reliability. Results reveal that students exhibited strong skills in hypothesis clarity, theoretical grounding, and experimental design, with a high degree of methodological innovation observed. However, challenges persisted in predictive reasoning and evidence-based conclusion writing. The students were strongly interested in inquiring about the cardiovascular and nervous systems. Correlational analyses suggest a positive relationship between project originality and overall academic performance. Thus, integrating SAE and IBL fosters critical scientific competencies, creativity, and epistemic cognition while democratizing access to scientific experimentation and engaging students in tech-savvy pedagogical practices. Enhanced Anticancer Activity of Atractylodin-Loaded Poly(lactic-co-glycolic Acid) Nanoparticles Against Cholangiocarcinoma

Cholangiocarcinoma (CCA) is highly prevalent in the Greater Mekong sub-region, especially northeastern Thailand, where infection with the liver fluke Opisthorchis viverrini is a major etiological factor. Limited therapeutic options and the absence of reliable early diagnosis tools impede effective disease control. Atractylodes lancea (Thunb.) DC.—long used in Thai and East Asian medicine, contains atractylodin (ATD), a potent bioactive compound with anticancer potential. Here, we developed ATD-loaded poly(lactic co-glycolic acid) nanoparticles (ATD PLGA NPs) and evaluated their antitumor efficacy against CCA. The formulated nanoparticles had a mean diameter of 229.8 nm, an encapsulation efficiency of 83%, and exhibited biphasic, sustained release, reaching a cumulative release of 92% within seven days. In vitro, ATD-PLGA NPs selectively reduced the viability of CL-6 and HuCCT-1 CCA cell lines, with selectivity indices (SI) of 3.53 and 2.61, respectively, outperforming free ATD and 5-fluorouracil (5-FU). They suppressed CL-6 cell migration and invasion by up to 90% within 12 h and induced apoptosis in 83% of cells through caspase-3/7 activation. Micronucleus assays showed lower mutagenic potential than the positive control. In vivo, ATD-PLGA NPs dose-dependently inhibited tumor growth and prolonged survival in CCA-xenografted nude mice; the high-dose regimen matched or exceeded the efficacy of 5-FU. Gene expression analysis revealed significant downregulation of pro-tumorigenic factors (VEGF, MMP-9, TGF-β, TNF-α, COX-2, PGE2, and IL-6) and upregulation of the anti-inflammatory cytokine IL-10. Collectively, these results indicate that ATD-PLGA NPs are a promising nanotherapeutic platform for targeted CCA treatment, offering improved anticancer potency, selectivity, and safety compared to conventional therapies. This study investigated the evolving trends, current research hotspots, and future directions of radiotherapy combined with nanobiomaterials through a bibliometric analysis. Publications related to nanobiomaterials used in radiotherapy between 2004 and 2024 were retrieved from the Web of Science Core Collection database and analyzed using VOSviewer, R, and CiteSpace. China emerged as the leading contributor, accounting for 1051 publications (50.41%), followed by the USA. Liu Zhuang is the most productive author in this field. American Chemical Society (ACS) Nano published the most influential articles and accumulated the highest number of citations. Advanced Targeted Therapies in Cancer: Drug Nanocarriers, the Future of Chemotherapy was the most cited, with 1255 citations. Citation bursts have revealed emerging research trends in targeted delivery, cellular studies, co-delivery strategies, immunogenic cell death, polymeric nanoparticles, tumor research, and drug delivery systems, indicating potential avenues for future research. Over the past two decades, nanomaterials for radiotherapy have gained substantial attention. Key areas of focus include enhancing the efficacy of radiotherapy, achieving targeted drug delivery, minimizing adverse effects, and integrating nanomaterials with other therapeutic modalities. Future investigations are expected to improve the precision of radiotherapy, augment radiation effects, and optimize the tumor microenvironment. Full article

Platelet-rich plasma (PRP) is widely used in regenerative medicine, yet clinical outcomes remain inconsistent. While traditional strategies have focused on platelet concentration and activation methods, emerging evidence suggests that the biological age of platelets, especially platelet senescence, may be a critical but overlooked factor influencing therapeutic efficacy. Senescent platelets display reduced granule content, impaired responsiveness, and heightened pro-inflammatory behavior, all of which can compromise tissue repair and regeneration. This review explores the mechanisms underlying platelet aging, including oxidative stress, mitochondrial dysfunction, and systemic inflammation, and examines how these factors influence PRP performance across diverse clinical contexts. We discuss the functional consequences of platelet senescence, the impact of comorbidities and aging on PRP quality, and current tools to assess platelet functionality, such as HLA-I–based flow cytometry. In addition, we present strategies for pre-procedural optimization, advanced processing techniques, and adjunctive therapies aimed at enhancing platelet quality. Finally, we challenge the prevailing emphasis on high-volume blood collection, highlighting the limitations of quantity-focused protocols and advocating for a shift toward biologically precise, function-driven regenerative interventions. Recognizing and addressing platelet senescence is a key step toward unlocking the full therapeutic potential of PRP-based interventions. Full article

Gaming Against Frailty: Effects of Virtual Reality-Based Training on Postural Control, Mobility, and Fear of Falling Among Frail Older Adults

Background/Objectives: Frailty is a prevalent geriatric syndrome associated with impaired postural control and elevated fall risk. Although conventional exercise is a core strategy for frailty management, adherence remains limited. Virtual reality (VR)-based interventions have emerged as potentially engaging alternatives, but their effects on objective postural control and task-specific confidence in frail populations remain understudied. This study aimed to evaluate the effectiveness of a supervised VR training program using the Nintendo Ring Fit Plus™ on postural control, functional mobility, and balance confidence among frail community-dwelling older adults. Methods: Fifty-one adults aged ≥65 years classified as frail or prefrail were enrolled in a four-week trial. Participants were assigned to either a VR intervention group (n = 28) or control group (n = 23). Participants were non-randomly assigned based on availability and preference. Outcome measures were collected at baseline and post-intervention. Primary outcomes included center of pressure (CoP) metrics—sway area, mean velocity, and sway path. Secondary outcomes were the Timed Up and Go (TUG), Berg Balance Scale (BBS), Activities-specific Balance Confidence (ABC), and Falls Efficacy Scale–International (FES-I). Results: After adjusting for baseline values, age, and BMI, the intervention group showed significantly greater improvements than the control group across all postural control outcomes. Notably, reductions in sway area, mean velocity, and sway path were observed under both eyes-open and eyes-closed conditions, with effect sizes ranging from moderate to very large (Cohen’s d = 0.57 to 1.61). For secondary outcomes, significant between-group differences were found in functional mobility (TUG), balance performance (BBS), and balance confidence (ABC), with moderate-to-large effect sizes (Cohen’s d = 0.53 to 0.73). However, no significant improvement was observed in fear of falling (FES-I), despite a small-to-moderate effect size. Conclusions: A supervised VR program significantly enhanced postural control, mobility, and task-specific balance confidence in frail older adults. These findings support the feasibility and efficacy of VR-based training as a scalable strategy for mitigating frailty-related mobility impairments. Full article

Fear of Falling After Total Knee Replacement: A Saudi Experience

Background: Fear of falling (FOF) is a significant concern among older adults, especially after total knee arthroplasty (TKA). FOF can limit daily activities, reduce quality of life, and hinder recovery. This study aimed to investigate the prevalence, severity, and impacts of FOF in patients undergoing TKA and identify factors contributing to increased FOF. Methods: A prospective observational study was conducted at King Abdulaziz Medical City in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, from April 2024 to December 2024. This study included 52 participants aged 20 to 75 years who had undergone primary TKA. Data were collected at two time points: after TKA and at three months post-surgery. The Short Falls Efficacy Scale-International (SFES-I) was used to assess the severity of FOF, and the Short Form 36 (SF-36) was used to measure the quality of life. Descriptive statistics, t-tests, and logistic regression were used for analysis. Results: This study included 52 participants (mean age: 63.77 ± 6.65 years; 82.7% female). Post-TKA, all participants exhibited high FOF (mean SFES-I score: 56.75 ± 8.30). After three months, the mean SFES-I score decreased significantly to 49.04 ± 12.45 (t = 4.408, p < 0.05). Post-TKA, SF-36 showed significant improvements in the physical function, role of physical limitations, bodily pain, vitality, social function, role of emotional limitations, and mental health subdomains. Bilateral total knee arthroplasty, body mass index, and some SF-36 subcomponents—such as general health, vitality, and role of emotional limitations—were identified as factors leading to increased FOF. Conclusions: FOF remains prevalent and severe in TKA patients, even at three months post-surgery, affecting rehabilitation outcomes. Early identification and tailored interventions for FOF should be considered essential components of comprehensive TKA recovery programs. Full article

Background: Transfection is vital for gene therapy, mRNA treatments, CAR-T cell therapy, and regenerative medicine. While viral vectors are effective, non-viral systems like lipid nanoparticles (LNPs) offer safer, more flexible alternatives. This work explores emerging non-viral transfection technologies to improve delivery efficiency and therapeutic outcomes. Methods: This review synthesizes the current literature and recent advancements in non-viral transfection technologies. It focuses on the mechanisms, advantages, and limitations of various delivery systems, including lipid nanoparticles, biodegradable polymers, electroporation, peptide-based carriers, and microfluidic platforms. Comparative analysis was conducted to evaluate their performance in terms of transfection efficiency, cellular uptake, biocompatibility, and potential for clinical translation. Several academic search engines and online resources were utilized for data collection, including Science Direct, PubMed, Google Scholar Scopus, the National Cancer Institute’s online portal, and other reputable online databases. Results: Non-viral systems demonstrated superior performance in delivering mRNA, siRNA, and antisense oligonucleotides, particularly in clinical applications. Biodegradable polymers and peptide-based systems showed promise in enhancing biocompatibility and targeted delivery. Electroporation and microfluidic systems offered precise control over transfection parameters, improving reproducibility and scalability. Collectively, these innovations address key challenges in gene delivery, such as stability, immune response, and cell-type specificity. Conclusions: The continuous evolution of transfection technologies is pivotal for advancing gene and cell-based therapies. Non-viral delivery systems, particularly LNPs and emerging platforms like microfluidics and biodegradable polymers, offer safer and more adaptable alternatives to viral vectors. These innovations are critical for optimizing therapeutic efficacy and enabling personalized medicine, immunotherapy, and regenerative treatments. Future research should focus on integrating these technologies to develop next-generation transfection platforms with enhanced precision and clinical applicability. Full article

The objective of this study was to evaluate the efficacy of selected herbicides permitted for use in sustainable agriculture, specifically targeting spring rye and spring barley in a no-till farming system. The application of chemical herbicide protection in the cultivation of spring rye and barley significantly increased the yield and improved the quality parameters of the harvested grain, with the most pronounced effect observed in spring barley. The effectiveness of the herbicide treatment in reducing the number of weeds was 99.4% for spring rye and 82.39% for spring barley. The study demonstrated that the application of chemical herbicide protection had a positive impact on the quality parameters of spring barley grain. Both the thousand-grain weight and protein content were significantly higher in the grain collected from protected plots compared to the control plots. By utilizing herbicides permitted for use in integrated production (IP) in a sustainable manner, we protect the environment while minimizing the impact on crop yields and maintaining the quality of the harvested produce. Background: Accumulating evidence indicates that SARS-CoV-2 infection results in long-term multiorgan complications, with the kidney being a primary target. This study aimed to characterize the long-term transcriptomic changes in the kidney following coronavirus infection using a murine model of MHV-1-induced SARS-like illness and to evaluate the therapeutic efficacy of SPIKENET (SPK). Methods: A/J mice were infected with MHV-1. Renal tissues were collected and subjected to immunofluorescence analysis and Next Generation RNA Sequencing to identify differentially expressed genes associated with acute and chronic infection. Bioinformatic analyses, including PCA, volcano plots, and GO/KEGG pathway enrichment, were performed. A separate cohort received SPK treatment, and comparative transcriptomic profiling was conducted. Gene expression profile was further confirmed using real-time PCR. Results: Acute infection showed the upregulation of genes involved in inflammation and fibrosis. Long-term MHV-1 infection led to the sustained upregulation of genes involved in muscle regeneration, cytoskeletal remodeling, and fibrotic responses. Notably, both expression and variability of SLC22 and SLC22A8, key proximal tubule transporters, were reduced, suggesting a loss of segment-specific identity. Further, SLC12A1, a critical regulator of sodium reabsorption and blood pressure, was downregulated and is associated with the onset of polyuria and hydronephrosis. SLC transporters exhibited expression patterns consistent with tubular dysfunction and inflammation. These findings suggest aberrant activation of myogenic pathways and structural proteins in renal tissues, consistent with a pro-fibrotic phenotype. In contrast, SPK treatment reversed the expression of most genes, thereby restoring the gene profiles to those observed in control mice. Conclusions: MHV-1-induced long COVID is associated with persistent transcriptional reprogramming in the kidney, indicative of chronic inflammation, cytoskeletal dysregulation, and fibrogenesis. SPK demonstrates robust therapeutic potential by normalizing these molecular signatures and preventing long-term renal damage. These findings underscore the relevance of the MHV-1 model and support further investigation of SPK as a candidate therapy for COVID-19-associated renal sequelae. Full article

CareCoach seeks to enhance self-efficacy in family caregivers of people living with dementia and has been feasibility tested in a multicentre randomised controlled trial. The intervention offers two face-to-face sessions with a trained coach and access to an online platform with nine modules. This paper reports findings from an embedded qualitative process evaluation assessing implementation from the implementer’s (‘coach’s’) (n = 8) perspective using individual interviews and implementer group discussions. Qualitative data were transcribed verbatim, inductively coded and analysed using Normalisation Process Theory. Implementers demonstrated (1) ‘Coherence’ by seeking to understand how CareCoach compared to current practice, highlighting the importance of supporting coaches to differentiate and identify boundaries between their new ‘coach role’ and usual practice; (2) ‘Cognitive Participation’ by reviewing training and resources to understand their role own responsibilities and facilitate delivery of coaching sessions; group supervision and peer support were also emphasised; (3) ‘Collective Action’ through interactions with carers to deliver key behavioural aspects such as goal setting, problem solving, and providing feedback; and (4) ‘Reflexive Monitoring’ by appraising the intervention to gain useful insights that could facilitate refinement of CareCoach training and delivery. This study provides a theoretically informed understanding of the implementation of CareCoach for caregivers of people living with dementia and provides recommendations to enhance training for coaches, intervention delivery and carer engagement. The emergence and spread of antimicrobial resistance among pathogens are significantly reducing available therapeutic options, highlighting the urgent need for novel and complementary treatment strategies. Antimicrobial photodynamic therapy (aPDT) is a promising alternative approach that can overcome antimicrobial resistance through a multitarget mechanism of action, exerting direct bactericidal and fungicidal effects with minimal risk of resistance development. Although aPDT has shown efficacy against a variety of pathogens, data on its activity against large collections of clinical multidrug-resistant strains are still limited. In this study, we assessed the antimicrobial activity of the photosensitizer RLP068/Cl combined with a red light-emitting LED source at 630 nm (Molteni Farmaceutici, Italy) against a large panel of Gram-negative and Gram-positive bacterial strains harboring relevant resistance traits and Candida species. Our results demonstrated the significant microbicidal activity of RLP068/Cl against all of the tested strains regardless of their resistance phenotype, with particularly prominent activity against Gram-positive bacteria (range of bactericidal concentrations 0.05–0.1 µM), which required significantly lower exposure to photosensitizer compared to Candida and Gram-negative species (range 5–20 µM). Overall, these findings support the potential use of RLP068/Cl-mediated aPDT as an effective therapeutic strategy for the management of localized infections caused by MDR organisms, particularly when conventional therapeutic options are limited. Background/Objectives: Typically, studies aiming to assess the ability of canine parvovirus (CPV) vaccines to immunise puppies with maternally derived antibody (MDA) are undertaken using group-housed puppies. Since live attenuated vaccine virus is invariably shed in the faeces, this can result in repeated oral re-exposure and puppies which failed to respond to the initial vaccination may respond instead to shed vaccine virus in the environment, thus artificially enhancing the efficacy of the vaccine. This problem can be avoided by adopting a pair-housed study design where one vaccinated pup is housed with one unvaccinated sentinel. Using this design, we examine the capability of four commercially available canine parvovirus vaccines to immunise MDA-positive pups. Methods: Thirty-four 6-week-old puppies born to vaccinated dams were divided into four vaccine groups with similar MDA ranges. Within each group puppies were paired based on matching MDA titres, and each pair was housed in separate biocontainment accommodation. In each pair, the pup with the highest MDA was vaccinated and the other left as an unvaccinated sentinel. All vaccinates were given a single dose of one of the vaccines. Vaccinates and sentinels were then bled every 2–4 days and CPV antibody was measured. Daily rectal swabs were also collected from all pups to identify any shed vaccinal CPV. Results: All the pups vaccinated with Nobivac DP PLUS seroconverted, with significantly higher antibody titres compared to the pups in other vaccine groups, all shed vaccine virus, and all bar one of the sentinel pups seroconverted. In the other groups, only vaccinated pups with lower levels of MDA seroconverted and shed vaccine virus but none of the sentinel pups seroconverted. Conclusions: Different canine parvovirus vaccines differ in their ability to replicate in and immunise puppies with MDA, the levels of which may vary widely between individuals. The shedding of vaccinal CPV is an important consideration when designing studies to demonstrate efficacy in MDA-positive puppies. Full article

The application of extended reality (XR) in design education has grown substantially; however, empirical evidence on its educational benefits remains limited. This two-year study examines the impact of incorporating a virtual reality (VR) learning module into undergraduate landscape architecture (LA) construction courses, focusing on brick masonry instruction. A conventional learning sequence—lecture, sketching, CAD, and 3D modeling—was supplemented with an immersive VR experience developed using Unreal Engine 5 and deployed on Meta Quest devices. In Year 1, we piloted a preliminary version of the module with landscape architecture students (n = 15), and data on implementation feasibility and student perception were collected. In Year 2, we refined the learning module and implemented it with a new cohort (n = 16) using standardized VR evaluation metrics, knowledge retention tests, and self-efficacy surveys. The findings suggest that when sequenced after a theoretical introduction, VR serves as a pedagogical bridge between abstract construction principles and physical implementation. Moreover, the VR module enhanced student engagement and self-efficacy by offering experiential learning with immediate feedback. The findings highlight the need for intentional design, institutional support, and the continued development of tactile, collaborative simulations. Full article
