This paper investigates the performance of a spacecraft equipped with a diffractive sail in a heliocentric mission scenario that requires phasing along a prescribed elliptical orbit. The diffractive sail represents an evolution of the more traditional reflective solar sail, which converts solar radiation pressure into thrust using a large reflective surface typically coated with a thin metallic film. In contrast, the diffractive sail proposed by Swartzlander leverages the properties of an advanced metamaterial-based film to generate a net transverse thrust even when the sail is Sun-facing, i.e., in a configuration that can be passively maintained by a suitably designed spacecraft. Specifically, this study considers a sail membrane covered with a set of electro-optically controlled diffractive panels. These panels employ a (controlled) binary metamaterial arrayed grating to steer the direction of photons exiting the diffractive film. This control technique has recently been applied to achieve a circle-to-circle interplanetary transfer using a Sun-facing diffractive sail. In this work, an optimal control law is employed to execute a rapid phasing maneuver along an elliptical heliocentric orbit with specified characteristics, such as those of Earth and Mercury. The analysis also includes a limiting case involving a circular heliocentric orbit. For this latter scenario, a simplified and elegant control law is proposed based on a linearized form of the equations of motion to describe the heliocentric dynamics of the diffractive sail-based spacecraft during the phasing maneuver. The authors of this paper investigated the process parameters of high-speed laser cladding of TC4/AISI431 composite coatings on the surface of C45 steel, choosing laser power, scanning speed, and TC4 addition as the experimental factors, and porosity, microhardness, and corrosion resistance as the target indices. A regression model was established based on the response surface methodology BBD, and the reliability of the model was analyzed using an ANOVA. Then, the WOA was used for multi-objective optimization. The optimal parameter set was determined as follows: a laser power of 5315 W, a scanning speed of 378 mm/s, and a TC4 addition of 3.6%. The microstructure and surface elemental composition of the coating were analyzed. The results showed that the porosity reduced by 60% and that the corrosion resistance improved by 79.98%, while the microhardness remained essentially unchanged. Full article

Corrosion in maritime ballast tanks is a major driver of maintenance costs and operational risks for maritime assets. Inspections are hampered by complex geometries, hazardous conditions, and the limitations of conventional methods, particularly visual assessment, which struggles with subjectivity, accessibility, and early detection, especially under coatings. This paper critically examines these challenges and explores the potential of Light Detection and Ranging (LiDAR) and Hyperspectral Imaging (HSI) to form the basis of improved inspection approaches. We discuss LiDAR’s utility for accurate 3D mapping and providing a spatial framework and HSI’s potential for objective material identification and surface characterization based on spectral signatures along a wavelength range of 400-1000nm (visible and near infrared). Preliminary findings from laboratory tests are presented, demonstrating the basic feasibility of HSI for differentiating surface conditions (corrosion, coatings, bare metal) and relative coating thickness, alongside LiDAR’s capability for detailed geometric capture. Although these results do not represent a deployable system, they highlight how LiDAR and HSI could address key limitations of current practices and suggest promising directions for future research into integrated sensor-based corrosion assessment strategies. Many low-temperature applications, such as rocket engines and liquefied natural gas (LNG) transport pumps, necessitate ultra-low-temperature operational environments. In these conditions, the properties of lubricating oils and greases are significantly influenced by temperature, leading to the widespread adoption of solid lubrication. Currently, there is no international research regarding the influence of bearing coatings on the subsurface stress distribution in raceways. The Lundberg–Palmgren (L-P) theory states that subsurface stress variations govern bearing lifespan. Therefore, this paper utilizes existing formulas and Python programming to calculate the subsurface stress field of the inner raceway in a MoS2 solid-lubricated angular contact ball bearing. Furthermore, it analyzes the impacts of factors such as coating material properties, slide-to-roll ratio, traction coefficient, and load on its subsurface stress field. The results reveal that for solid-lubricated ball bearings, as the load increases, the maximum subsurface stress shifts closer to the center of the contact area, and the maximum subsurface shear stress becomes more concentrated. As the traction coefficient increases, the stress on the XZ-plane side increases and its position moves closer to the surface, while the opposite trend is observed on the other side. Additionally, the maximum value of the subsurface von Mises stress is approximately 0.64P0, and the maximum value of the orthogonal shear stress component τyz in the subsurface is approximately 0.25P0. As consumer preferences tend toward safer, chemical residue-free, and nutritionally rich fruits, preharvest bagging has gained attention as a sustainable method for improving fruit quality and protecting produce from environmental and biological stressors and pesticide residues. This study assessed the impact of preharvest bagging using paper bags with inner aluminum coating on the physicochemical traits, storability, and browning susceptibility after cutting or bruising of ‘Afrata Volou’ quince (Cydonia oblonga Mill.) fruit grown in central Greece. Fruits were either bagged or left unbagged approximately 60 days before harvest, and evaluations were conducted at harvest and after three months of cold storage, plus two days of shelf-life. Fruit bagging reduced the quince’s flesh temperature on the tree crown. Bagging had minor effects on fruit and nutritional quality, except for more yellow skin and higher titratable acidity (TA). Also, at harvest, bagging did not significantly affect fruit flesh browning after cutting or bruising. After three months of storage, unbagged and bagged quince fruit developed more yellow skin color, without significant alterations in most quality characteristics and nutritional value, but increased total tannin content (TTC). After three months of storage, the quince flesh color determined immediately after cutting or bruising was brighter and more yellowish compared to that at harvest, due to continuation of fruit ripening, but it darkened faster with time after cutting or skin removal. Therefore, fruit bagging appears to be a sustainable practice for improving the aesthetic and some chemical quality characteristics of quince, particularly after storage, without negative impacts on other characteristics such as texture and phenolic content. Paper’s inherent hydrophilicity and porosity cause inadequate barrier properties, failing under high humidity/temperature. This study successfully developed a hydrophobic nanocoating agent (xLNPs-OTS) through silanization modification using D276 (lignin nanoparticles with a diameter of 276 nm) as the substrate and OTS (octadecyltrichlorosilane) as the functionalizing agent. By applying the coating to paper surfaces followed by a hot-pressing process, the paper achieved comprehensive performance enhancements, including superior water, oil, and vapor barrier properties, thermal stability, mechanical strength, frictional resistance, and self-cleaning capabilities. The Cobb 60 value of LOTSC3.5T120t30 (the coating made from the OTS silanized lignin with the coating amount of 3.5 g/m2 and a hot-pressing at 120 °C for 30 min) coated paper is as low as 3.75 g/m2, and can withstand hot water at 100 °C for 60 min. The Cobb 60 value of the LOTSC20T120t30 (the coating made from the OTS silanized lignin with the coating amount of 20 g/m2 and a hot-pressing at 120 °C for 30 min) coated paper is reduced to 0.9 g/m2, the Kit grade is 6, and all coated papers are endowed with self-cleaning features. This study advances lignin’s high-value utilization, driving sustainable packaging and supporting eco-friendly paper material development. Full article

This paper explores the impact of applying a powder additive in the form of halloysite and mullite on the thermal protection properties of a composite. The authors used CES R70 epoxy resin with CES H72 hardener, modified by varying the amount of powder additive. The composite samples were exposed to a mixture of combustible gases at a temperature of approximately 1000 °C. The primary parameters analyzed during this study were the temperature on the rear surface of the sample and the ablative mass loss of the tested material. The temperature increase on the rear surface of the sample, which was exposed to the hot stream of flammable gases, was measured for 120 s. Another key parameter considered in the data analysis was the ablative mass loss. The charred layer of the sample played a crucial role in this process, as it helped block oxygen diffusion from the boundary layer of the original material. This charred layer absorbed thermal energy until it reached a temperature at which it either oxidized or was mechanically removed due to the erosive effects of the heating factor. The incorporation of mullite reduced the rear surface temperature from 58.9 °C to 49.2 °C, and for halloysite, it was reduced the rear surface temperature to 49.8 °C. The ablative weight loss dropped from 57% to 18.9% for mullite and to 39.9% for halloysite. The speed of mass ablation was reduced from 77.9 mg/s to 25.2 mg/s (mullite) and 52.4 mg/s (halloysite), while the layer thickness loss decreased from 7.4 mm to 2.8 mm (mullite) and 4.4 mm (halloysite). This research is innovative in its use of halloysite and mullite as functional additives to enhance the ablative resistance of polymer composites under extreme thermal conditions. This novel approach not only contributes to a deeper understanding of composite behavior at high temperatures but also opens up new avenues for the development of advanced thermal protection systems. Potential applications of these materials include aerospace structures, fire-resistant components, and protective coatings in environments exposed to intense heat and flame. Full article

The present investigation highlights the importance of evaluating the painting process on a composite material, namely the Kevlar validation process. Kevlar, a synthetic fabric, is well known for its remarkable strength and durability. Kevlar is used in the construction of spaceships and airplanes because it is lightweight and five times stronger than steel. This paper will present the methods for measuring paint layer thickness in accordance with EN ISO 2808:2019, confirming that organic coatings have fully cured, and coating thickness will be measured using magnetic currents. This study will also address the topic of determining liquid resistance. The protocols for manufacturing the Kevlar specimen are in accordance with ISO 2812-2:2018 using the water immersion method and structural testing. The investigation also demonstrates the progress of the framing test following immersion in Airbus PTP metal test tubes. Full article

Aiming at the goal of preparing high-quality coatings, this paper reviews the progress on circular arc source structure and magnetic field arc controlling technology in arc ion plating (AIP), with a focus on design characteristics of the different structures and configuration optimization of the corresponding magnetic fields. The circular arc source, due to its simple structure, convenient installation, flexible target combination, high cooling efficiency, and high ionization rate and deposition rate, has shown significant application potential in AIP technology. In terms of magnetic field arc controlling technology, this paper delves into the design progress of various magnetic field configurations, including fixed magnetic fields generated by permanent magnets, dynamic rotating magnetic fields, axially symmetric magnetic fields, rotating transverse magnetic fields, and multi-mode alternating electromagnetic coupling fields. By designing the magnetic field distribution reasonably, the trajectory and velocity of the arc spot can be controlled precisely, thus reducing the generation of macroparticles, improving target utilization, and enhancing coating uniformity. In particular, the introduction of multi-mode magnetic field coupling technology has broken through the limitations of traditional single magnetic field structures, achieving comprehensive optimization of arc spot motion and plasma transport. Hopefully, these research advances provide an important theoretical basis and technical support for the application of AIP technology in the preparation for high-quality decorative and functional coatings. Due to its superior maneuverability and concealment, the micro flapping-wing aircraft has great application prospects in both military and civilian fields. However, the development and optimization of lightweight materials have always been the key factors limiting performance enhancement. This paper designs the flapping mechanism of a single-degree-of-freedom miniature flapping wing aircraft. In this study, T800 carbon fiber composite material was used as the frame material. Three typical wing membrane materials, namely polyethylene terephthalate (PET), polyimide (PI), and non-woven kite fabric, were selected for comparative analysis. Three flapping wing configurations with different stiffness were proposed. These wings adopted carbon fiber composite material frames. The wing membrane material is bonded to the frame through a coating. Inspired by bionics, a flapping wing that mimics the membrane vein structure of insect wings is designed. By changing the type of membrane material and the distribution of carbon fiber composite materials on the wing, the stiffness of the flapping wing can be controlled, thereby affecting the mechanical properties of the flapping wing aircraft. The modal analysis of the flapping-wing structure was conducted using the finite element analysis method, and the experimental prototype was fabricated by using 3D printing technology. To evaluate the influence of different wing membrane materials on lift performance, a high-precision force measurement experimental platform was built, systematic tests were carried out, and the lift characteristics under different flapping frequencies were analyzed. Through computational modeling and experiments, it has been proven that under the same flapping wing frequency, the T800 carbon fiber composite material frame can significantly improve the stiffness and durability of the flapping wing. In addition, the selection of wing membrane materials has a significant impact on lift performance. Among the test materials, the PET wing film demonstrated excellent stability and lift performance under high-frequency conditions. This research provides crucial experimental evidence for the optimal selection of wing membrane materials for micro flapping-wing aircraft, verifies the application potential of T800 carbon fiber composite materials in micro flapping-wing aircraft, and opens up new avenues for the application of advanced composite materials in high-performance micro flapping-wing aircraft. The anodic oxide layer’s porosity is considered a functional feature, acting as a reservoir of lubricants. This feature enables the design of self-lubricating systems that effectively reduce friction and wear. To improve the tribological performance of Al2O3 anodic coatings on EN AW 5251 aluminium alloys, this paper presents a modification of the coating with tungsten disulfide (IF-WS2) nanopowder and its effect on coating resistance. The wear properties of Al2O3/IF-WS2 coatings in contact with a cast iron pin were investigated. The results include the analysis of the friction coefficient in the reciprocating motion without oil lubrication at two loads, the analysis of the wear intensity of the cast iron pin, the characterisation of wear scars, and the analysis of SGP parameters. Two-level factorial analysis showed that load and nanomodification significantly affected the load-bearing parameter Rk. Incorporation of the modifier, especially under higher loads, reduced the Rk value, thus improving the tribological durability of the contact pair. Both load and nanomodification had a notable impact on the coefficient of friction. The use of IF-WS2-modified coatings reduced the coefficient, and higher loads further enhanced this effect, by approximately 9% at a load of 0.3 MPa and 15% at a load of 0.6 MPa, indicating improved lubricating conditions under greater contact stress. This paper presents the results of a comprehensive study of the structure, phase composition, thermal corrosion, and tribological properties of multilayer gradient coatings based on YSZ/NiCrAlY obtained using detonation spraying. X-ray phase analysis showed that the coatings consist entirely of metastable tetragonal zirconium dioxide (t’-ZrO2) phase stabilized by high temperature and rapid cooling during spraying. SEM analysis confirmed the multilayer gradient phase distribution and high density of the structure. Wear resistance, optical profilometry, wear quantification, and coefficient of friction measurements were used to evaluate the operational stability. The results confirm that the structural parameters of the coating, such as porosity and phase gradient, play a key role in improving its resistance to thermal corrosion and CMAS melt, which makes such coatings promising for use in high-temperature applications. It is shown that a dense and thick coating effectively prevents the penetration of aggressive media, providing a high barrier effect and minimal structural damage. Tribological tests in the temperature range from 21 °C to 650 °C revealed that the best characteristics are observed at 550 °C: minimum coefficient of friction (0.63) and high stability in the stage of stable wear. At room temperature and at 650 °C, there is an increase in wear due to the absence or destabilization of the protective layer. Full article

Plow loosening machines are essential agricultural machinery in the agricultural production process. Improving the surface strengthening process and extending the working life of the plow teeth of the plow loosening machine are of great significance. In this paper, the preparation of Stellite6/Cu composite coating on the surface of 316L steel substrate intended for strengthening the plow teeth of a plow loosening machine using laser cladding technology was studied. The influence of different laser process parameters on the microstructure and properties of Stellite6/Cu composite coating was investigated. The composite coating powder was composed of Stellite6 powder with a different weight percent of copper. Microstructural analysis, phase composition, elemental distribution, microhardness, wear resistance, and corrosion resistance of the composite coatings on the plow teeth were analyzed using scanning electron microscopy (SEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD), microhardness testing, energy dispersive spectroscopy (EDS), friction and wear testing, and electrochemical workstation measurements. The results showed that (1) When the laser power was 1000 W, the average hardness of the prepared Stellite6/Cu composite layer achieved the highest hardness, approximately 1.36 times higher than the average hardness of the substrate, and the composite coating prepared exhibited the best wear resistance; (2) When the scanning speed was 800 mm/min, the composite coating exhibited the lowest average friction coefficient and the optimal corrosion resistance in a 3.5% wt.% NaCl solution with a self-corrosion current density of −7.55 µA/cm2; (3) When the copper content was 1 wt.%, the composite coating achieved the highest average hardness with 515.2 HV, the lowest average friction coefficient with 0.424, and the best corrosion resistance with a current density of −8.878 µA/cm2. Indium-based oxide semiconductors have been commercialized because of their excellent electrical properties, but the high cost, limited availability, and environmental toxicity of indium necessitate the development of alternative materials. Among the most promising candidates, zinc–tin oxide (ZTO) is an indium-free oxide semiconductor with considerable potential, but its relatively low carrier mobility and inherent limitations in thin-film quality demand further performance enhancements. This paper proposes a new approach to overcome these challenges by incorporating single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWNTs) as conductive fillers into the ZTO matrix and using a layer-by-layer multiple coating process to construct nanocomposite thin films. As a result, ZTO/SWNTs (0.07 wt.%) thin-film transistors (TFTs) fabricated with three coating cycles exhibited a high saturation mobility of 18.72 cm2/V·s, a threshold voltage of 0.84 V, and a subthreshold swing of 0.51 V/dec. These values represent an approximately four-fold improvement in mobility compared to ZTO TFT, showing that the multiple-coating-based nanocomposite strategy can effectively overcome the fundamental limitations. This study confirms the feasibility of achieving high-performance oxide semiconductor transistors without indium, providing a sustainable pathway for next-generation flexible electronics and display technologies. Dynamic Control of Coating Accumulation Model in Non-Stationary Environment Based on Visual Differential Feedback

To address the issue of coating accumulation model failure in unstable environments, this paper proposes a dynamic control method based on visual differential feedback. An image difference model is constructed through online image data modeling and real-time reference image feedback, enabling real-time correction of the coating accumulation model. Firstly, by combining the Arrhenius equation and the Hagen–Poiseuille equation, it is demonstrated that pressure regulation and temperature changes are equivalent under dataset establishment conditions, thereby reducing data collection costs. Secondly, online paint mist image acquisition and processing technology enables real-time modeling, overcoming the limitations of traditional offline methods. This approach reduces modeling time to less than 4 min, enhancing real-time parameter adjustability. Thirdly, an image difference model employing a CNN + MLP structure, combined with feature fusion and optimization strategies, achieved high prediction accuracy: R2 > 0.999, RMSE < 0.79 kPa, and σe < 0.74 kPa on the test set for paint A; and R2 > 0.997, RMSE < 0.67 kPa, and σe < 0.66 kPa on the test set for aviation paint B. The results show that the model can achieve good dynamic regulation for both types of typical aviation paint used in the experiment: high-viscosity polyurethane enamel (paint A, viscosity 22 s at 25 °C) and epoxy polyamide primer (paint B, viscosity 18 s at 25 °C). In summary, the image difference model can achieve dynamic regulation of the coating accumulation model in unstable environments, ensuring the stability of the coating accumulation model. This technology can be widely applied in industrial spraying scenarios with high requirements for coating uniformity and stability, especially in occasions with significant fluctuations in environmental parameters or complex process conditions, and has important engineering application value.
