To develop high-performance electrode materials for supercapacitors, in this paper, a heterostructured composite material of cerium sulfide and zinc sulfide quantum dots (CeS2/ZnS QD) was successfully prepared by hydrothermal method. Characterization through scanning electron microscopy (SEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD), and transmission electron microscopy (TEM) showed that ZnS QD nanoparticles were uniformly composited with CeS2, effectively increasing the active sites surface area and shortening the ion diffusion path. Electrochemical tests show that the specific capacitance of this composite material reaches 2054 F/g at a current density of 1 A/g (specific capacity of about 256 mAh/g), significantly outperforming the specific capacitance of pure CeS2 787 F/g at 1 A/g (specific capacity 98 mAh/g). The asymmetric supercapacitor (ASC) assembled with CeS2/ZnS QD and activated carbon (AC) retained 84% capacitance after 10,000 charge–discharge cycles. Benefited from the synergistic effect between CeS2 and ZnS QDs, the significantly improved electrochemical performance of the composite material suggests a promising strategy for designing rare-earth and QD-based advanced energy storage materials. Supercapacitors are considered a bridge between batteries and capacitors due to their significant energy density, as well as power density. Herein, we prepared two novel electrodes of Fe0.8Co0.2S and Fe0.8Co0.2S/rGO composites and analyzed their supercapacitor performance. The results indicated that Fe0.8Co0.2S/rGO, prepared through co-precipitation and annealing, exhibited a higher specific capacitance value and improved electrochemical properties in comparison to Fe0.8Co0.2S due to the synergistic effect of rGO with Fe0.8Co0.2S. X-ray diffraction (XRD) confirmed the desired phases of Fe0.8Co0.2S, while scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS) verified the microstructures and desired elements. Cyclic voltammetry (CV) confirmed an enhanced oxidation current from +25 mA to +49 mA at 10 mV/s, while galvanometric charge–discharge (GCD) showed an enhanced discharge time from 78 s to 300 s. As a result, the specific capacitance and energy density were enhanced from 74.3 F/g to 285.7 F/g and 2.84 Wh/kg to 10.9 Wh/kg, respectively. This contributed to a more than 283% increase in specific capacitance, as well as energy density. Overall, Fe0.8Co0.2S/rGO shows great potential for small-scale energy storage devices. Full article

In applications where it is crucial that a battery is recharged from the partially discharged state in the minimum time, it is crucial to honor the technological constraints related to maximum safe battery terminal voltage and maximum continuous charging current prescribed by the battery cell manufacturer. To this end, this contribution outlines the design and comprehensive simulation analysis of an adaptive battery charging system relying on battery open-circuit voltage estimation in real time. A pseudo-random binary sequence test signal and model reference adaptive system are used for the estimation of lithium titanate battery cell electrical circuit model parameters, with the design methodology based on the Lyapunov stability criterion. The proposed adaptive charger is assessed against the conventional constant-current/constant-voltage charging system. The effectiveness of the real-time parameter estimator, along with both the adaptive and traditional charging systems for the lithium titanate battery cell, is validated through simulations and experiments on a dedicated battery test bench. Lightning strikes pose a significant risk during outdoor activities. The connection between conventionally used rescue blankets in alpine emergencies and the risk of lightning injury is unclear. This experimental study investigated whether rescue blankets made of aluminum-coated polyethylene terephthalate increase the likelihood of lightning injuries. High-voltage experiments of up to 2.5 MV were conducted in a controlled laboratory setting, exposing manikins to realistic lightning discharges. In a balanced test environment, two conventionally used brands were investigated. Upward leaders frequently formed on the edges along the fold lines of the foils and were significantly longer in crumpled rescue blankets (p = 0.004). When a lightning strike occurred, the thin metallic layer evaporated at the contact point without igniting the blanket or damaging the underlying plastic film. The blankets diverted surface currents and prevented current flow to the manikins, indicating potentially protective effects. The findings of this experimental study suggest that upward leaders rise from the edge areas of rescue blankets, although there is no increased risk for a direct strike. Rescue blankets may even provide partial protection against exposure to electrical charges. Full article

Given the rising importance of cost-effective solutions in battery research, this study employs an accessible testing approach using low-cost, sensor-equipped platforms that enable broader research and educational applications. It presents a comparative evaluation of lithium-ion battery degradation under two charging strategies: static charging (constant current at 1.2 A) and dynamic charging (stepped current from 400 mA to 800 mA) over 200 charge–discharge cycles. A custom-built, low-cost test platform based on an ESP32 microcontroller was developed to provide real-time monitoring of voltage, current, temperature, and internal resistance, with automated control and cloud-based data logging. The results indicate that static charging provides greater voltage stability and a lower increase in internal resistance (9.3%) compared to dynamic charging (30.17%), suggesting reduced electrochemical stress. Discharge time decreased for both strategies, by 6.25% under static charging and 18.46% under dynamic charging, highlighting capacity fade and aging effects. Internal resistance emerged as a reliable indicator of degradation, closely correlating with reduced runtime. These findings underscore the importance of selecting charging profiles based on specific application needs, as dynamic charging, while offering potential thermal benefits, may accelerate battery aging. Furthermore, the low-cost testing platform proved effective for long-term evaluation and degradation analysis, offering an accessible alternative to commercial battery cyclers. The insights gained contribute to the development of adaptive battery management systems that optimize performance, lifespan, and safety in electric vehicle applications. Full article

Driven by the rapid advancement of Vehicle-to-Grid (V2G) and Grid-to-Vehicle (G2V) technologies, improving power quality and system stability during charging and discharging has become a research focus. To address this, this paper proposes a Model Predictive Control (MPC) strategy for Active Neutral-Point Voltage Balancing (ANPVB) in a single-phase three-level converter used in on-board V2G chargers. Traditional converters rely on passive balancing using redundant vectors, which cannot ensure neutral-point (NP) voltage stability under sudden load changes or frequent power fluctuations. To solve this issue, an auxiliary leg is introduced into the converter topology to actively regulate the NP voltage. The proposed method avoids complex algorithm design and weighting factor tuning, simplifying control implementation while improving voltage balancing and dynamic response. The results show that the proposed Model Predictive Current Control-based ANPVB (MPCC-ANPVB) and Model Predictive Direct Power Control-based ANPVB (MPDPC-ANPVB) strategies maintain the NP voltage within ±0.7 V, achieve accurate power tracking within 50 ms, and reduce the total harmonic distortion of current (THDi) to below 1.89%. The proposed strategies are tested in both V2G and G2V modes, confirming improved power quality, better voltage balance, and enhanced dynamic response. Full article

Remaining useful life (RUL) serves as a pivotal metric for quantifying lithium-ion batteries’ state of health (SOH) in electric vehicles and plays a crucial role in ensuring their safety and reliability. In order to achieve accurate and reliable RUL prediction, a novel RUL prediction method which employs a back propagation (BP) neural network based on the Harris Hawks optimization (HHO) algorithm is proposed. This method optimizes the BP parameters using the improved HHO algorithm. At first, the circle chaotic mapping method is utilized to solve the problem of the initial value. Considering the problem of local convergence, Gaussian mutation is introduced to improve the search ability of the algorithm. Subsequently, two key health factors are selected as input features for the model, including the constant-current charging isovoltage rise time and constant-current discharging isovoltage drop time. The model is validated using aging data from commercial lithium iron phosphate (LiFePO4) batteries. Finally, the model is thoroughly verified under an aging test. Experimental validation using training sets comprising 50%, 60%, and 70% of the cycle data demonstrates superior predictive performance, with mean absolute error (MAE) values below 0.012, root mean square error (RMSE) values below 0.017 and mean absolute percentage error (MAPE) within 0.95%. The results indicate that the model significantly improves prediction accuracy, robustness and searchability. Full article

Distributed photovoltaic storage charging piles in remote rural areas can solve the problem of charging difficulties for new energy vehicles in the countryside, but these storage charging piles contain a large number of power electronic devices, and there is a risk of resonance in the system under weak grid conditions. Firstly, the topology of a photovoltaic storage charging pile is introduced, including a bidirectional DC/DC converter, unidirectional DC/DC converter, and single-phase grid-connected inverter. Then, the maximum power tracking control strategy based on improved conductance micro-increment is derived for a photovoltaic power generation system, and a constant voltage and constant current charge–discharge control strategy is derived for energy storage equipment. Additionally, a segmented reflective charging control strategy is introduced for charging piles, and the quasi-PR controller is introduced for single-phase grid-connected inverters. In addition, an improved second-order general integrator phase-locked loop (SOGI-PLL) based on feed-forward of the grid current is derived. Finally, a simulation model is built to verify the performance of the solar–storage charging pile and lay the technical groundwork for future integrated control strategies. Full article

This paper introduces an enhanced bi-directional full-bridge resonant converter designed for Vehicle-to-Grid (V2G) systems. A key innovation lies in the incorporation of an auxiliary LC resonant circuit connected via a tertiary transformer winding. This circuit dynamically modifies the magnetizing inductance based on operating frequency, enabling soft-switching across all primary switches, specifically, Zero-Voltage Switching (ZVS) at turn-on and near Zero-Current Switching (ZCS) at turn-off across the entire load spectrum. Additionally, the converter supports both Constant Current (CC) and Constant Voltage (CV) charging modes at distinct, fixed operating frequencies, thus avoiding wide frequency variations. A 3.3 kW prototype developed for onboard electric vehicle charging applications demonstrates the effectiveness of the proposed topology. Experimental results confirm high efficiency in both charging and discharging operations, achieving up to 98.13% efficiency in charge mode and 98% in discharge mode. Full article

Supercapacitors, with their remarkable attributes such as including a high power density, an extended cycle life, and inherent safety, have emerged as a major research area for electrochemical energy storage. In this paper, phenylenediamine and glyoxal were used as raw material to prepare p-phenylenediamine glyoxal (PGo) with one single step. p-phenylenediamine glyoxal-ferrocene (PGo-Fcx, x = 1, 0.3, 0.2, 0.1) composites were synthesized based on a poly-Schiff base. FTIR and XRD results indicated that ferrocene doping preserves the intrinsic PGo framework while inducing grain refinement, as evidenced by the narrowing of the XRD diffraction peaks. SEM observations further revealed distinct morphological evolution. CV (cyclic voltammetry), EIS (electrochemical impedance spectroscopy), and GCD (galvanostatic charge–discharge) were conducted on PGo-Fcx in order to examine its electrochemical performance. The PGo-Fc0.3 in PGo-Fcx electrode material had a specific capacitance of 59.6 F/g at a current density of 0.5 A/g and 36 F/g at a current density of 10 A/g. Notably, even after undergoing 5000 charging–discharging cycles at 10 A/g, the material retained 76.2% of its specific capacitance compared to the initial cycle. Therefore, taking conductive polymers and metal oxide materials for modification can improve the stability and electrochemical performance of supercapacitors. Full article

The ability to predict capacity retention is critical for ensuring the long-term reliability of supercapacitors in energy storage systems. This study presents a comprehensive machine learning framework that integrates both electrical cycling data and experimentally derived material and structural features to forecast the degradation behavior of commercial supercapacitors. A total of seven supercapacitor samples were tested under various current and voltage conditions, resulting in over 70,000 charge–discharge cycles across three case studies. In addition to electrical measurements, detailed physical and material characterizations were performed, including electrode dimension analysis, Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM), Energy Dispersive X-ray Spectroscopy (EDS), and Thermogravimetric Analysis (TGA). Three machine learning models, Linear Regression (LR), Random Forest (RF), and Multi-Layer Perceptron (MLP), were trained using both cycler-only and combined cycler + material features. Results show that incorporating material features consistently improved prediction accuracy across all models. The MLP model exhibited the highest performance, achieving an R2 of 0.976 on the training set and 0.941 on unseen data. Feature importance analysis confirmed that material descriptors such as porosity, thermal stability, and electrode thickness significantly contributed to model performance. This study demonstrates that combining electrical and material data offers a more holistic and physically informed approach to supercapacitor health prediction. The framework developed here provides a practical foundation for accurate and robust lifetime forecasting of commercial energy storage devices, highlighting the critical role of material-level insights in enhancing model generalization and reliability. Thermal safety issues of sodium-ion batteries have become a major challenge, particularly under abusive conditions where the risk of thermal runaway is heightened. This study investigates the effects of overcharging on the thermal safety of sodium-ion batteries. Discharge capacity and time, internal resistance, and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) at different states of charge (SOCs) are analyzed. Additionally, heat generation behaviors are evaluated at both normal/elevated temperatures. It is found that the overcharged batteries (OBs) demonstrate a significant increase in internal resistance from 46.72 Ω to 65.99 Ω. The discharge time of OBs at 1 C current (the ratio of the rate at which a battery discharges per unit time to its rated capacity) is reduced by 4.26% compared to normal batteries (NBs). The peak temperature and temperature difference increase by 5.6% and 36.1%, respectively. When discharged at 1 C at 40 °C, OBs have a 5.47% reduction in discharge time compared to NBs. Furthermore, the OBs exhibit an increase in the peak discharge temperature and temperature difference of 0.99 °C and 0.4 °C, respectively. Microscopic analysis of the electrode materials makes clear the irreversible damage to the internal structures of the sodium-ion battery caused by overcharging. This study potentially provides fundamental data support and theoretical insights for sodium-ion battery module thermal safety. Full article

Lithium-polymer (LiPo) batteries are valued for their high energy density, stable voltage output, low self-discharge, and strong reliability, making them a popular choice for high-performance and portable applications. Despite these advantages, the charging behavior of LiPo batteries—especially during rapid charging—remains an area with limited understanding. This research examines the electro-thermal characteristics of VARTA LiPo batteries when subjected to high charging currents (2C, 3C, and 4C rates). A temperature-sensitive charging model is developed to address safety and efficiency concerns during fast charging. Experimental data indicate that charging at 45 °C yields the best performance, achieving 80% state of charge (SoC) within 25 min. However, charging at temperatures above or below this level (such as 25 °C) reduces efficiency due to increased internal resistance and accelerated battery aging. The model, validated across a range of temperatures (25 °C, 35 °C, 45 °C, and 60 °C), shows that longer constant-current (CC) charging phases at higher temperatures are associated with lower internal resistance. These results highlight the importance of effective thermal management for optimizing both safety and performance in LiPo battery applications. Full article

This paper analyzes the influence of the number of ignition coils and spark discharge energy on the Coefficient of Variation of Indicated Mean Effective Pressure (COVIMEP) of an SI internal combustion piston engine. A modern electronically controlled induction ignition system is used during the test. Two fuels are used in the experiment. The reference fuel is gasoline and the tested fuel is ammonia. For the traditional fuel, using an additional ignition coil does not improve COVIMEP. This parameter for gasoline has an almost constant value for different ignition system charging times. The situation is different for ammonia. This fuel requires high ignition energy. The use of one ignition coil demands a long charging time. For short charging times, unrepeatability of the engine cycles is unacceptable. The use of an additional ignition coil allowed to the charging coil timing to be shortened and the unrepeatable engine cycles to be reduced. This paper determined the maximum charging time of the used ignition coil, above which the spark parameters are worse. In addition, the influence of charging time and number of ignition coils on total spark energy, spark discharge duration, maximum spark power, and voltage during spark discharge for ammonia is presented. The data presented in this paper are developed based on measurements of current and voltage in the secondary winding of the ignition coil. A self-developed electronic device enabling the change in spark energy is used to control the ignition system. This paper also presents the construction of modern ignition systems, describes the functions of selected components, and briefly discusses their diagnostics. Full article

The Impact of Aluminum Doping on the Performance of MgV2O4 Spinel Cathodes for High-Rate Zinc-Ion Energy Storage

This study explores the development of aluminum-doped MgV2O4 spinel cathodes for aqueous zinc-ion batteries (AZIBs), addressing the challenges of poor Zn2+ ion diffusion and structural instability. Al3+ ions were pre-inserted into the spinel structure using a sol-gel method, which enhanced the material’s structural stability and electrical conductivity. The doping of Al3+ mitigates the electrostatic interactions between Zn2+ ions and the cathode, thereby improving ion diffusion and facilitating efficient charge/discharge processes. While pseudocapacitive behavior plays a dominant role in fast charge storage, the diffusion of Zn2+ within the bulk material remains crucial for long-term performance and stability. Our findings demonstrate that Al-MgV2O4 exhibits enhanced Zn2+ diffusion kinetics and robust structural integrity under high-rate cycling conditions, contributing to its high electrochemical performance. The Al-MgVO cathode retains a capacity of 254.3 mAh g−1 at a high current density of 10 A g−1 after 1000 cycles (93.6% retention), and 186.8 mAh g−1 at 20 A g−1 after 2000 cycles (90.2% retention). These improvements, driven by enhanced bulk diffusion and the stabilization of the crystal framework through Al3+ doping, make it a promising candidate for high-rate energy storage applications.
