UNS S41003 is a low-cost, low-carbon ferritic stainless steel that exhibits moderate corrosion resistance but limited mechanical performance. This study evaluates the electrochemical behavior of untreated and thermomechanically treated UNS S41003 samples. Corrosion tests were conducted in acidic electrolytes with varying pH to simulate aggressive environments relevant to industrial and structural applications where exposure to acidic media and corrosive pollutants occurs. Potentiodynamic polarization curves for all samples displayed passive regions typically associated with protective oxide film formation; however, localized pitting corrosion was detected post-test. Electrochemical impedance spectroscopy indicated a marked decrease in corrosion resistance as pH decreased. The corrosion resistance of the treated alloy remained comparable to that of the untreated condition, indicating that thermomechanical processing did not detrimentally affect passivity or corrosion performance under the tested conditions. The literature suggests that the applied treatment enhances mechanical properties, supporting the potential use of this alloy in structural components subjected to acidic environments requiring a balance of mechanical strength and corrosion resistance. Rapid-Optimized Process Parameters of 1080 Carbon Steel Additively Manufactured via Laser Powder Bed Fusion on High-Throughput Mechanical Property Testing

To ensure the sustainability of alloy-based strategies, both compositional design and processing routes must be simplified. Metal additive manufacturing (AM), with its exceptionally rapid, non-equilibrium solidification, offers a unique platform to produce tailored microstructures in simple alloys that deliver superior mechanical properties. In this study, we employ laser powder bed fusion (LPBF) to fabricate 1080 plain carbon steel, a binary alloy comprising only iron and carbon. Deviating from conventional process optimization focusing primarily on density, we optimize LPBF parameters for mechanical performance. We systematically varied key parameters (laser power and scan speed) to produce batches of tensile specimens, which were then evaluated on a high-throughput mechanical testing platform (HTP). Using response surface methodology (RSM), we developed predictive models correlating these parameters with yield strength (YS) and elongation. The RSM models identified optimal and suboptimal parameter sets. Specimens printed under the predicted optimal conditions achieved YS of 1543.5 MPa and elongation of 7.58%, closely matching RSM predictions (1595.3 MPa and 8.32%) with deviations of −3.25% and −8.89% for YS and elongation, respectively, thus validating model accuracy. Comprehensive microstructural characterization, including metallographic analysis and fracture surface examination, revealed the microstructural origins of performance differences and the underlying strengthening mechanisms. This methodology enables rapid evaluation and optimization of LPBF parameters for 1080 carbon steel and can be generalized as an efficient framework for robust LPBF process development. Full article

This study systematically investigated the corrosion behavior of P110 pipeline steel in simulated carbonated concrete environments through a combination of electrochemical testing and multiphysics simulation, with particular focus on revealing the evolution mechanisms of corrosion product deposition and ion concentration distribution under half crevice structures, providing new insights into localized corrosion in concealed areas. Experimental results showed that no significant corrosion occurred on the P110 steel surface in uncarbonated simulated pore solution. Conversely, the half crevice structure significantly promoted the development of localized corrosion in carbonated simulated pore solution, with the most severe corrosion and substantial accumulation of corrosion products observed at the crevice mouth region. COMSOL Multiphysics simulations demonstrated that this phenomenon was primarily attributed to local enrichment of Cl and H+ ions, leading to peak corrosion current density, and directional migration of Fe2+ ions toward the crevice mouth, causing preferential deposition of corrosion products at this location. This “electrochemical acceleration-corrosion product deposition” multiphysics coupling analysis of corrosion product deposition patterns within crevices represents a new perspective not captured by traditional crevice corrosion models. The established ion migration-corrosion product deposition model provides new theoretical foundations for understanding crevice corrosion mechanisms and predicting the service life of buried concrete pipelines. This study investigates the wear performance of 20CrMnTi steel, a commonly used material for spiral bevel gears, after heat treatment, with a focus on the microstructural evolution and wear behavior in both the surface and gradient direction of the carburized layer. The results show that the microstructure composition in the gradient direction of the carburized layer gradually transitions from martensite and residual austenite to a martensite–bainite mixed structure, and eventually transforms to fully bainitic in the matrix. With the extension of carburizing time, both the effective carburized layer depth and the hardened layer depth significantly increase. Wear track morphology analysis reveals that the wear track depth gradually becomes shallower and narrower, and the wear rate increases significantly with increasing load. However, the friction coefficient shows little sensitivity to changes in carburizing time and load. Further investigations show that as the carburized layer depth increases, the carbon concentration and hardness of the samples gradually decrease, resulting in an increase in the average wear rate and a progressive worsening of wear severity. After the wear tests, different depths of plowing grooves, spalling, and fish-scale-like features were observed in the wear regions. Additionally, with the increase in load and carburized layer depth, both the width and depth of the wear tracks significantly increased. The research results provide a theoretical basis for optimizing the surface carburizing process of 20CrMnTi steel and improving its wear resistance. Full article

CaAl-LDH-Derived High-Temperature CO2 Capture Materials with Stable Cyclic Performance

The urgent need to mitigate rising global CO2 emissions demands the development of efficient carbon capture technologies. This study addresses the persistent challenge of sintering-induced performance degradation in CaO-based sorbents during high-temperature CO2 capture. A novel solvent/nonsolvent synthetic strategy to fabricate CaO/CaAl-layered double oxide (LDO) composites was developed, where CaAl-LDO serves as a nanostructural stabilizer. The CaAl-LDO precursor enables atomic-level dispersion of components, which upon calcination forms a Ca12Al14O33 “rigid scaffold” that spatially confines CaO nanoparticles and effectively mitigates sintering. Thermogravimetric analysis results demonstrate exceptional cyclic stability; the composite achieves an initial CO2 uptake of 14.5 mmol/g (81.5% of theoretical capacity) and retains 87% of its capacity after 30 cycles. This performance significantly outperforms pure CaO and CaO/MgAl-LDO composites. Physicochemical characterization confirms that structural confinement preserves mesoporous channels, ensuring efficient CO2 diffusion. This work establishes a scalable, instrumentally simple route to high-performance sorbents, offering an efficient solution for carbon capture in energy-intensive industries such as power generation and steel manufacturing. Nowadays, the circular economy is driving the construction industry towards greater sustainability for both environmental and financial purposes. One prominent area of research with significant contributions to circular economy is the reuse of steel from decommissioned structures in new construction projects. This approach is deemed far more efficient than ordinary steel recycling, due to the fact that it contributes towards reducing both the cost of the new project and the associated carbon emissions. Along these lines, the feasibility of utilizing steel wind turbine towers (WTTs) as part of a new structure is investigated herein, considering that wind turbines are decommissioned after a nominal life of approximately 25 years due to fatigue limitations. General principles of structural steel reuse are first presented in a systematic manner, followed by two case studies. Realistic data about the geometry and cross-sections of previous generation models of WTTs were obtained from the Greek Center for Renewable Energy Sources and Savings (CRES), including drawings and photographic material from their demonstrative wind farm in the area of Keratea. A specific wind turbine was selected that is about to exceed its life expectancy and will soon be decommissioned. Two alternative applications for the reuse of the tower were proposed and analyzed, with emphasis on the structural aspects. One deals with the use of parts of the tower as a small-span pedestrian bridge, while the second addresses the transformation of a tower section into a water storage tank. Several decision factors have contributed to the selection of these two reuse scenarios, including, amongst others, the geometric compatibility of the decommissioned wind turbine tower with the proposed applications, engineering intuition about the tower having adequate strength for its new role, the potential to minimize fatigue loads in the reused state, the minimization of cutting and joining processes as much as possible to restrain further CO2 emissions, reduction in waste material, the societal contribution of the potential reuse applications, etc. The two examples are briefly presented, aiming to demonstrate the concept and feasibility at the preliminary design level, highlighting the potential of decommissioned WTTs to find proper use for their future life. Electric propulsion requires engines and transmission systems that run at higher speeds compared to combustion engines. For improving sustainability and environmental protection, biodegradable oils are suggested for the lubrication of high-speed gears that require particularly quick wetting of the steel surfaces. Newly developed promising candidates include short-chained polyalphaolefins. In the present work, a study on the applicability of such oil is presented and discussed with respect to different aging levels based on biodegradable properties. It focuses on the wettability of metallic surfaces investigated through time-resolved contact angle measurements. Carbon steels with different carbon contents and microstructures are selected as the most commonly used materials for gears. Effects of steel composition, surface roughness and oil oxidation are studied. The results show that in most cases, the application of biodegradable polyalphaolefins is not critical; however, a combination of steels with inhomogeneous microstructure, high surface roughness and aged oil can be critical because of limited wetting. Study on Flow and Heat Transfer Characteristics of Reheating Furnaces Under Oxygen-Enriched Conditions

A computational fluid dynamics (CFD) numerical simulation methodology was implemented to model transient heating processes in steel industry reheating furnaces, targeting combustion efficiency optimization and carbon emission reduction. The effects of oxygen concentration (O2%) and different fuel types on the flow and heat transfer characteristics were investigated under both oxygen-enriched combustion and MILD oxy-fuel combustion. The results indicate that MILD oxy-fuel combustion promotes flue gas entrainment via high-velocity oxygen jets, leading to a substantial improvement in the uniformity of the furnace temperature field. The effect is most obvious at O2% = 31%. MILD oxy-fuel combustion significantly reduces NOx emissions, achieving levels that are one to two orders of magnitude lower than those under oxygen-enriched combustion. Under MILD conditions, the oxygen mass fraction in flue gas remains below 0.001 when O2% ≤ 81%, indicating effective dilution. In contrast, oxygen-enriched combustion leads to a sharp rise in flame temperature with an increasing oxygen concentration, resulting in a significant increase in NOx emissions. Elevating the oxygen concentration enhances both thermal efficiency and the energy-saving rate for both combustion modes; however, the rate of improvement diminishes when O2% exceeds 51%. Based on these findings, MILD oxy-fuel combustion using mixed gas or natural gas is recommended for reheating furnaces operating at O2% = 51–71%, while coke oven gas is not. Full article

Steel is an important product in many engineering sectors; however, steelmaking remains one of the largest CO2 emitters. Therefore, new governmental policies drive the steelmaking industry toward a cleaner and more sustainable operation such as the gas-based direct reduction–electric arc furnace process. To become carbon neutral, utilizing more scrap is one of the feasible solutions to achieve this goal. Addressing knowledge gaps regarding scrap heterogeneity (size, shape, and composition) is essential to evaluate the effects of increased scrap ratios in basic oxygen furnace (BOF) operations. This review systematically examines heat and mass transfer correlations relevant to scrap melting in BOF steelmaking, with a focus on low Prandtl number fluids (thick thermal boundary layer) and dense particulate systems. Notably, a majority of these correlations are designed for fluids with high Prandtl numbers. Even for the ones tailored for low Prandtl, they lack the introduction of the porosity effect which alters the melting behavior in such high temperature systems. The review is divided into two parts. First, it surveys heat transfer correlations for single elements (rods, spheres, and prisms) under natural and forced convection, emphasizing their role in predicting melting rates and estimating maximum shell size. Second, it introduces three numerical modeling approaches, highlighting that the computational fluid dynamics–discrete element method (CFD–DEM) offers flexibility in modeling diverse scrap geometries and contact interactions while being computationally less demanding than particle-resolved direct numerical simulation (PR-DNS). Nevertheless, the review identifies a critical gap: no current CFD–DEM framework simultaneously captures shell formation (particle growth) and non-isotropic scrap melting (particle shrinkage), underscoring the need for improved multiphase models to enhance BOF operation. The operation of heavy-haul railway trains with large loads results in significant cracking issues in reinforced concrete beams. Atmospheric carbon dioxide, oxygen, and moisture from the atmosphere penetrate into the beam interior through these cracks, accelerating the carbonation of the concrete and the corrosion of the steel bars. The rust-induced expansion of steel bars further exacerbates the cracking of the beam. The interaction between environmental factors and beam cracks leads to a rapid decline in the durability of the beam. To address this issue, a multi-physics field coupling durability assessment method was proposed, considering concrete beam cracking, concrete carbonation, and steel bar corrosion. The interaction among these three factors is achieved through sequential coupling, using crack width, carbonation passivation time, and steel bar corrosion rate as interaction parameters. Using this method, the deterioration morphology and stiffness degradation laws of 8 m reinforced concrete beams under different load conditions, including those of heavy and light trains in heavy-haul railways, are compared and assessed. The analysis reveals that within a 100-year service cycle, the maximum relative stiffness reduction for beams on the heavy train line is 20.0%, whereas for the light train line, it is only 7.4%. The degree of structural stiffness degradation is closely related to operational load levels, and beam cracking plays a critical role in this difference. Full article

A novel stainless steel with high Mn and Mo content (much higher than traditional stainless steel), designated CH241SS, was developed as a potential replacement for Cr-Mo-V alloy steel in the cold forging applications of precision industry. Through carbon reduction in an environmentally friendly manner and a two-stage heat treatment process, the hardness of as-cast CH241 was tailored from HRC 37 to HRC 29, thereby meeting the industrial specifications of cold-forged steel (≤HRC 30). X-ray diffraction analysis of the as-cast microstructure revealed the presence of a small amount of ferrite, martensite, austenite, and alloy carbides. After heat treatment, CH241 exhibited a dual-phase microstructure consisting of ferrite and martensite with dispersed Cr(Ni-Mo) alloy carbides. The CH241 alloy demonstrated excellent high-temperature stability. No noticeable softening occurred after 72 h for the second-stage heat treatment. Based on the mechanical and room-temperature tensile fatigue properties of CH241-F (forging material) and CH241-ST (soft-tough heat treatment), it was demonstrated that the CH241 stainless steel was superior to the traditional stainless steel 4xx in terms of strength and fatigue life. Therefore, CH241 stainless steel can be introduced into cold forging and can be used in precision fatigue application. The relevant data include composition design and heat treatment properties. This study is an important milestone in assisting the upgrading of the vehicle and aerospace industries. Full article

The production of iron and steel plays a significant role in the anthropogenic carbon footprint, accounting for 7% of global GHG emissions. In the context of CO2 mitigation, the steelmaking industry is looking to potentially replace traditional carbon-based ironmaking processes with hydrogen-based direct reduction of iron ore in shaft furnaces. Before industrialization, detailed modeling and parametric studies were needed to determine the proper operating parameters of this promising technology. The modeling approach selected here was to complement REDUCTOR, a detailed finite-volume model of the shaft furnace, which can simulate the gas and solid flows, heat transfers and reaction kinetics throughout the reactor, with an extension that describes the whole gas circuit of the direct reduction plant, including the top gas recycling set up and the fresh hydrogen production. Innovative strategies (such as the redirection of part of the bustle gas to a cooling inlet, the use of high nitrogen content in the gas, and the introduction of a hot solid burden) were investigated, and their effects on furnace operation (gas utilization degree and total energy consumption) were studied with a constant metallization target of 94%. It has also been demonstrated that complete metallization can be achieved at little expense. These strategies can improve the thermochemical state of the furnace and lead to different energy requirements. Full article

Articulated arm coordinate measuring machines are designed for in situ use directly in manufacturing environments, enabling efficient dimensional control outside of climate-controlled laboratories. This study investigates the influence of ambient temperature variation on the accuracy of length measurements performed with the Hexagon Absolute Arm 8312. The experiment was carried out in a laboratory setting simulating typical shop floor conditions through controlled temperature changes in the range of approximately 20–31 °C. A calibrated steel gauge block was used as a reference standard, allowing separation of the influence of the measuring system from that of the measured object. The results showed that the gauge block length changed in line with the expected thermal expansion, while the articulated arm coordinate measuring machine exhibited only a minor residual thermal drift and stable performance. The experiment also revealed a constant measurement offset of approximately 22 µm, likely due to calibration deviation. As part of the study, an uncertainty budget was developed, taking into account all relevant sources of influence and enabling a more realistic estimation of accuracy under operational conditions. The study confirms that modern carbon composite articulated arm coordinate measuring machines with integrated compensation can maintain stable measurement behavior even under fluctuating temperatures in controlled environments. Compressive Behaviour of Sustainable Concrete-Filled Steel Tubes Using Waste Glass and Rubber Glove Fibres

To reduce the carbon footprint of the concrete industry and promote a circular economy, this study explores the reuse of waste materials such as glass powder (GP) and nitrile rubber (NR) fibres in concrete. However, the inclusion of these waste materials results in lower compressive strength compared to conventional concrete, limiting their application to non-structural elements. To overcome this limitation, this study adopts the concept of confined concrete by developing concrete-filled steel tube (CFST) stub columns. In total, twelve concrete mix variations were developed, with and without steel tube confinement. GP was utilised at replacement levels of 10–30% by weight of cement, while NR fibres were introduced at 0.5% and 1% by volume of concrete. The findings demonstrate that the incorporation of GP and NR fibres leads to a reduction in compressive strength, with a compounded effect observed when both materials are combined. Steel confinement within CFST columns effectively mitigated the strength reductions, restoring up to 17% of the lost capacity and significantly improving ductility and energy absorption capacity. All CFST columns exhibited consistent local outward buckling failure mode, irrespective of the concrete mix variations. A comparison with predictions from existing design codes and empirical models revealed discrepancies, underscoring the need for refined design approaches for CFST columns incorporating sustainable concrete infill. This study contributes valuable insights into the development of eco-friendly, high-performance structural systems, highlighting the potential of CFST technology in facilitating the adoption of waste materials in the construction sector. Helical milling presents a promising alternative to conventional drilling for hole production, offering superior surface quality and improved production efficiency. While this technique has been extensively applied in the aerospace industry, its potential for machining common engineering materials, such as AISI 1045 steel, remains underexplored in the literature. This study addresses this gap by systematically evaluating the influence of key process parameters—cutting speed (Vc), axial depth of cut (ap), and tool diameter (Dt)—on hole quality attributes, including surface roughness, burr formation, and nominal diameter accuracy. A full factorial experimental design (23) was employed, coupled with analysis of variance (ANOVA), to quantify the effects and interactions of these parameters. The results reveal that, with a higher Vc, it is possible to reduce surface roughness (Ra) by 30% to 40%, while an increased ap leads to a 50% increase in Ra. Additionally, Dt emerged as the most critical factor for nominal diameter accuracy, reducing geometrical errors by 1% with a larger Dt. Burr formation was predominantly observed at the lower end of the hole, highlighting challenges specific to this technique. These findings provide valuable insights into optimizing helical milling for low-carbon steels, offering a foundation for broader industrial adoption and further research. Full article
