This study investigates the interplay between infill structure and surface texture in Fused Deposition Modeling (FDM)-printed polymer specimens and their combined influence on tribological and mechanical performance. Unlike previous works that focus on single-variable analysis, this work offers a comparative evaluation of Shore D hardness and coefficient of friction (COF) for PLA and Iglidur materials, incorporating diverse infill patterns. The results reveal that specific combinations (e.g., grid infill with 90% density) optimize hardness and minimize friction, offering practical insights for design optimization in functional parts. Our aim is to provide design insights for enhanced wear resistance and hardness through tailored structural configurations. Carbon Fiber-reinforced PLA (PLA CF), aramid fiber-reinforced Acrylonitrile Styrene Acrylate (Kevlar), and Iglidur I180-BL tribofilament. Disc specimens were fabricated with gyroid infill densities ranging from 10% to 100%. Experimental methodologies included Ball-on-Disc tests conducted under dry sliding conditions (5 N normal load, 150 mm/s sliding speed) to assess friction and wear characteristics. These tribological evaluations were complemented by profilometric and microscopic analyses and Shore D hardness testing. The results show that Iglidur I180-BL achieved the lowest friction coefficients (0.141–0.190) and negligible wear, while PLA specimens with 90% infill demonstrated a polishing-type wear with minimal material loss and a friction coefficient (COF) of ~0.108. In contrast, PLA CF and Kevlar exhibited higher wear depths (up to 154 µm for Kevlar) and abrasive mechanisms due to fiber detachment. Shore hardness values increased with infill density, with PLA reaching a maximum of 82.7 Shore D. These findings highlight the critical interplay between infill architecture and surface patterning and offer actionable guidelines for the functional design of durable FDM components in load-bearing or sliding applications. Long-range underwater gliders (LRUGs) have emerged as essential platforms for sustained and autonomous observation in deep and remote marine environments. This paper provides a comprehensive review of their developmental status, performance characteristics, and application progress. Emphasis is placed on two critical enabling technologies that fundamentally determine endurance: lightweight, pressure-resistant hull structures and high-efficiency buoyancy-driven propulsion systems. First, the role of carbon fiber composite pressure hulls in enhancing energy capacity and structural integrity is examined, with attention to material selection, fabrication methods, compressibility compatibility, and antifouling resistance. Second, the evolution of buoyancy control systems is analyzed, covering the transition to hybrid active–passive architectures, rapid-response actuators based on smart materials, thermohaline energy harvesting, and energy recovery mechanisms. Based on this analysis, the paper identifies four key technical challenges and proposes strategic research directions, including the development of ultralight, high-strength structural materials; integrated multi-mechanism antifouling technologies; energy-optimized coordinated buoyancy systems; and thermally adaptive glider platforms. Achieving a system architecture with ultra-long endurance, enhanced energy efficiency, and robust environmental adaptability is anticipated to be a foundational enabler for future long-duration missions and globally distributed underwater glider networks. The precursor-derived ceramic route is recognized as an advanced and efficient technique for fabricating ceramic matrix composites, particularly suitable for the development and microstructural tailoring of continuous fiber-reinforced ceramic matrix composites. In this work, octamethylcyclotetrasiloxane and tetravinylcyclotetrasiloxane were employed as monomers to synthesize a branched siloxane via ring-opening polymerization. A subsequent hydrosilylation reaction led to the formation of polyvinylsiloxane with a three-dimensional crosslinked structure. The precursor exhibited excellent fluidity, adjustable viscosity, and superior thermosetting characteristics, enabling efficient impregnation and densification of reinforcements through the polymer infiltration and pyrolysis process. Upon pyrolysis, the polyvinylsiloxane gradually converted from an organic polymer to an amorphous inorganic ceramic phase, yielding silicon oxycarbide ceramics with a high ceramic yield of 81.3%. Elemental analysis indicated that the resulting ceramic mainly comprised silicon and oxygen, with a low carbon content. Furthermore, the material demonstrated a stable dielectric constant (~2.5) and low dielectric loss (<0.01), which are beneficial for enhanced thermal stability and dielectric performance. These findings offer a promising precursor system and process reference for the low-cost production of high-performance, multifunctional ceramic matrix composites with strong potential for engineering applications. Material Extrusion (MEX) process is increasingly used to fabricate components for structural applications, driven by the availability of advanced materials and greater industrial adoption. In these contexts, understanding the mechanical performance of printed parts is crucial. However, conventional methods for assessing anisotropic elastic behavior often rely on expensive equipment and time-consuming procedures. The aim of this study is to evaluate the applicability of the impulse excitation of vibration (IEV) in characterizing the dynamic mechanical properties of a 3D-printed composite material. Tensile tests were also performed to compare quasi-static properties with the dynamic ones obtained through IEV. The tested material, Nylon 12CF, contains 35% short carbon fibers by weight and is commercially available from Stratasys. It is used in the fused deposition modeling (FDM) process, a Material Extrusion technology, and exhibits anisotropic mechanical properties. This is further reinforced by the filament deposition process, which affects the mechanical response of printed parts. Young’s modulus obtained in the direction perpendicular to the deposition plane (E33), obtained via IEV, was 14.77% higher than the value in the technical datasheet. Comparing methods, the Young’s modulus obtained in the deposition plane, in an inclined direction of 45 degrees in relation to the deposition direction (E45), showed a 22.95% difference between IEV and tensile tests, while Poisson’s ratio in the deposition plane (v12) differed by 6.78%. This data is critical for designing parts subject to demanding service conditions, and the results obtained (orthotropic elastic properties) can be used in finite element simulation software. Ultimately, this work reinforces the potential of the IEV method as an accessible and consistent alternative for characterizing the anisotropic properties of components produced through additive manufacturing (AM). Fiber-reinforced composites are gaining more importance across different fields such as aeronautics, automotives, high-performance sporting equipment, etc., where decreasing weight while improving mechanical properties of polymers is fundamental. This article explores the mechanical behavior of fiber-reinforced polyester composite materials, highlighting their advantages and applications in various industrial fields. Usually, composite materials consist of a polyester matrix reinforced with different types of fibers, such as glass, carbon, or Kevlar, which provide superior mechanical characteristics. This study analyzed the tensile strength, bending resistance, and resilience of glass fiber composites, emphasizing the importance of proper fiber selection and manufacturing processes. These materials stand out for their excellent strength-to-weight ratio and are widely used in the fabrication of tanks in various industries. Experimental results demonstrated tensile strength (Rm) around 115 MPa, Shore D hardness values of 88 units, and impact toughness (resilience) of 2.7 J/cm2. Based on the composite materials’ behavior in testing, the article further offers practical recommendations for the effective deployment of these composites in the fabrication of various types of industrial reservoirs. For the first time, electrospinning has been used to recycle polyacrylonitrile terpolymer (PAN) waste following the solid-phase N-methylmorpholine-N-oxide (NMMO) process from PAN solutions in DMSO into nonwoven materials. The morphology of the obtained material has been studied. The material derived from secondary raw materials was compared to the material from the original PAN using IR spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy, and atomic force microscopy. It has been demonstrated that the chemical changes of PAN that occur during NMMO processing do not interfere with nonwoven material manufacture. Spun PAN nonwovens with different histories have similar morphology. It has been shown that the elastic modulus of ultrafine fibers depends on the history of PAN. Single monofilaments produced from initial PAN have a threefold greater elastic modulus than fibers spun from NMMO-recycled polymer. The revealed structure and properties of PAN fibers allow them to be considered as filter materials, as well as precursors of carbon nonwoven fabrics. Full article

The increasing need for materials that are both lightweight and strong in the aerospace and automotive sectors has driven the extensive use of composite sandwich structures. This study examines the impact response of honeycomb sandwich composites fabricated using the vacuum-assisted resin transfer molding (VARTM) technique. Two configurations were analyzed, namely carbon–honeycomb–carbon (CHC) and carbon–Kevlar–honeycomb–Kevlar–carbon (CKHKC), to assess the effect of Kevlar reinforcement on impact resistance. Charpy impact testing was conducted to evaluate energy absorption, revealing that CKHKC composites exhibited significantly superior impact resistance compared to CHC composites. The CKHKC composite achieved an average impact strength of 70.501 KJ/m2, which is approximately 73.8% higher than the 40.570 KJ/m2 recorded for CHC. This improvement is attributed to Kevlar’s superior toughness and energy dissipation capabilities. A comparative assessment of impact energy absorption further highlights the advantages of hybrid Kevlar–carbon fiber composites, making them highly suitable for applications requiring enhanced impact performance. These findings provide valuable insights into the design and optimization of high-performance honeycomb sandwich structures for impact-critical environments. Full article

This study focuses on the development of lignin-based carbon-fiber-reinforced laminated veneer lumber (LVL) beams for garden timber structures, addressing wood shortages and environmental concerns. The research consisted of three main phases: the extraction and characterization of the lignin from corn stalks; the preparation and characterization of lignin-based carbon fibers; the fabrication and testing of reinforced LVL beams. Lignin was extracted from corn stalks using a deep eutectic solvent, followed by the preparation of lignin-based carbon fibers through electrospinning. These carbon fibers were integrated with poplar veneers to create reinforced LVL beams. The test results demonstrated significant improvements in mechanical properties, with the reinforced LVL beams exhibiting a 17% increase in elastic modulus and a 30% enhancement in flexural strength compared with conventional LVL beams. Notable improvements were also observed in tensile strength, compressive strength, and shear strength. This research provides a novel approach for producing high-value-added carbon fibers from agricultural waste, advancing the development of sustainable building materials. Full article

Due to its superior maneuverability and concealment, the micro flapping-wing aircraft has great application prospects in both military and civilian fields. However, the development and optimization of lightweight materials have always been the key factors limiting performance enhancement. This paper designs the flapping mechanism of a single-degree-of-freedom miniature flapping wing aircraft. In this study, T800 carbon fiber composite material was used as the frame material. Three typical wing membrane materials, namely polyethylene terephthalate (PET), polyimide (PI), and non-woven kite fabric, were selected for comparative analysis. Three flapping wing configurations with different stiffness were proposed. These wings adopted carbon fiber composite material frames. The wing membrane material is bonded to the frame through a coating. Inspired by bionics, a flapping wing that mimics the membrane vein structure of insect wings is designed. By changing the type of membrane material and the distribution of carbon fiber composite materials on the wing, the stiffness of the flapping wing can be controlled, thereby affecting the mechanical properties of the flapping wing aircraft. The modal analysis of the flapping-wing structure was conducted using the finite element analysis method, and the experimental prototype was fabricated by using 3D printing technology. To evaluate the influence of different wing membrane materials on lift performance, a high-precision force measurement experimental platform was built, systematic tests were carried out, and the lift characteristics under different flapping frequencies were analyzed. Through computational modeling and experiments, it has been proven that under the same flapping wing frequency, the T800 carbon fiber composite material frame can significantly improve the stiffness and durability of the flapping wing. In addition, the selection of wing membrane materials has a significant impact on lift performance. Among the test materials, the PET wing film demonstrated excellent stability and lift performance under high-frequency conditions. This research provides crucial experimental evidence for the optimal selection of wing membrane materials for micro flapping-wing aircraft, verifies the application potential of T800 carbon fiber composite materials in micro flapping-wing aircraft, and opens up new avenues for the application of advanced composite materials in high-performance micro flapping-wing aircraft. Hybrid Experimental–Machine Learning Study on the Mechanical Behavior of Polymer Composite Structures Fabricated via FDM

This study explores the mechanical behavior of polymer and composite specimens fabricated using fused deposition modeling (FDM), focusing on three material configurations: acrylonitrile butadiene styrene (ABS), carbon fiber-reinforced polyphthalamide (PPA/Cf), and a sandwich-structured composite. A systematic experimental plan was developed using the Box–Behnken design (BBD) to investigate the effects of material type (MT), infill pattern (IP), and printing direction (PD) on tensile and flexural strength. Experimental results showed that the PPA/Cf material with a “Cross” IP printed “Flat” yielded the highest mechanical performance, achieving a tensile strength of 75.8 MPa and a flexural strength of 102.3 MPa. In contrast, the lowest values were observed in ABS parts with a “Grid” pattern and “Upright” orientation, recording 37.8 MPa tensile and 49.5 MPa flexural strength. Analysis of variance (ANOVA) results confirmed that all three factors significantly influenced both outputs (p < 0.001), with MT being the most dominant factor. Machine learning (ML) algorithms, Bayesian linear regression (BLR), and Gaussian process regression (GPR) were employed to predict mechanical performance. GPR achieved the best overall accuracy with R2 = 0.9935 and MAPE = 11.14% for tensile strength and R2 = 0.9925 and MAPE = 12.96% for flexural strength. Comparatively, the traditional BBD yielded slightly lower performance with MAPE = 13.02% and R2 = 0.9895 for tensile strength. Validation tests conducted on three unseen configurations clearly demonstrated the generalization capability of the models. Based on actual vs. predicted values, the GPR yielded the lowest average prediction errors, with MAPE values of 0.54% for tensile and 0.45% for flexural strength. In comparison, BLR achieved 0.79% and 0.60%, while BBD showed significantly higher errors at 1.76% and 1.32%, respectively. Full article

Fused Filament Fabrication (FFF) enables the manufacturing of complex polymer components. However, surface finish and dimensional accuracy remain key limitations for their integration into functional assemblies. This study explores the potential of conventional turning as a post-processing strategy to improve the geometric and surface quality of PLA reinforced with carbon fiber (CF) parts produced by FFF. Machinability was evaluated through the analysis of cutting forces, thermal behavior, energy consumption, and surface integrity under varying cutting speeds, feed rates, and specimen slenderness. The results indicate that feed is the most influential parameter across all performance metrics, with lower values leading to improved dimensional accuracy and surface finish, achieving the most significant reductions of 63% in surface roughness (Sa) and 62% in cylindricity deviation. Nevertheless, the surface roughness is higher than that of metals, and deviations in geometry along the length of the specimen have been observed. A critical shear stress of 0.237 MPa has been identified as the limit for interlayer failure, defining the boundary conditions for viable cutting operation. The incorporation of CNC turning as a post-processing step reduced the total fabrication time by approximately 83% compared with high-resolution FFF, while maintaining dimensional accuracy and enhancing surface quality. These findings support the use of machining operations as a viable and efficient post-processing method for improving the functionality of polymer-based components produced by additive manufacturing. Geopolymer, as a sustainable, low-carbon gel binder, is regarded as a potential alternative to cement. Freeze–thaw (F-T) resistance, which has a profound influence on the service life of structures, is a crucial indicator for assessing the durability of geopolymer composites (GCs). Consequently, comprehending the F-T resistance of GCs is of the utmost significance for their practical implementation. In this article, a comprehensive and in-depth review of the F-T resistance of GCs is conducted. This review systematically synthesizes several frequently employed theories regarding F-T damage, with the aim of elucidating the underlying mechanisms of F-T damage in geopolymers. The factors influencing the F-T resistance of GCs, including raw materials, curing conditions, and modified materials, are meticulously elaborated upon. The results indicate that the F-T resistance of GCs can be significantly enhanced through using high-calcium-content precursors, mixed alkali activators, and rubber aggregates. Moreover, appropriately increasing the curing temperature has been shown to improve the F-T resistance of GCs, especially for those fabricated with low-calcium-content precursors. Among modified materials, the addition of most fibers and nano-materials remarkably improves the F-T resistance of GCs. Conversely, the effect of air-entraining agents on the F-T resistance of GCs seems to be negligible. Furthermore, evaluation and prediction models for the F-T damage of GCs are summarized, including empirical models and machine learning models. In comparison with empirical models, the models established by machine learning algorithms exhibit higher predictive accuracy. This review promotes a more profound understanding of the factors affecting the F-T resistance of GCs and their mechanisms, providing a basis for engineering and academic research. Full article

Effect of Alumina Microparticle-Infused Polymer Matrix on Mechanical Performance of Carbon Fiber Reinforced Polymer (CFRP) Composite

In recent times, fiber reinforced polymer composite materials have become more popular due to their remarkable features such as high specific strength, high stiffness and durability. Particularly, Carbon Fiber Reinforced Polymer (CFRP) composites are one of the most prominent materials used in the field of transportation and building engineering, replacing conventional materials due to their attractive properties as mentioned. In this work, a CFRP laminate is fabricated with carbon fiber mats and epoxy by a hand layup technique. Alumina (Al2O3) micro particles are used as a filler material, mixed with epoxy at different weight fractions of 0% to 4% during the fabrication of CFRP laminates. The important objective of the study is to investigate the influence of alumina micro particles on the mechanical performance of the laminates through characterization for various physical and mechanical properties. It is revealed from the results of study that the mass density of the laminates steadily increased with the quantity of alumina micro particles added and subsequently, the porosity of the laminates is reduced significantly. The SEM micrograph confirmed the constituents of the laminate and uniform distribution of Al2O3 micro particles with no significant agglomeration. The hardness of the CFRP laminates increased significantly for about 60% with an increase in weight % of Al2O3 from 0% to 4%, whereas the water gain % gradually drops from 0 to 2%, after which a substantial rise is observed for 3 to 4%. The improved interlocking due to the addition of filler material reduced the voids in the interfaces and thereby resist the absorption of water and in turn reduced the plasticity of the resin too. Tensile, flexural and inter-laminar shear strengths of the CFRP laminate were improved appreciably with the addition of alumina particles through extended grain boundary and enhanced interfacial bonding between the fibers, epoxy and alumina particles, except at 1 and 3 wt.% of Al2O3, which may be due to the pooling of alumina particles within the matrix. Inclusion of hard alumina particles resulted in a significant drop in impact strength due to appreciable reduction in softness of the core region of the laminates. Full article

Carbon nanotube (CNT) fiber research focuses on developing functional fabrics with dual or multifunctional capabilities. This study investigates CNT fibers fabricated via dielectrophoresis (DEP) with the incorporation of 10 wt.% carbide-derived carbon (CDC), referred to as CNTCDC fibers. The linear actuation behavior of the CNT and the CNTCDC fibers is compared using identical electrolyte concentrations in both a polar aprotic solvent (propylene carbonate, PC) and a polar protic solvent (aqueous solution, aq). Electromechanical deformation (EMD) is studied through cyclic voltammetry and chronoamperometry. The CNTCDC fiber outperformed the pristine CNT fiber, exhibiting primary expansion during discharge in PC (stress: 1.64 kPa, strain: 0.1%) and during charge in water (stress: 1.32 kPa, strain: 0.047%). By contrast, the pristine CNT fibers showed mixed actuation responses in both solvents, resulting in diminished net stress and strain. Chronopotentiometric measurements indicated that the CNTCDC fibers achieved their highest specific capacitance in aqueous media, reaching 223 ± 17 F g−1 at ±0.8 A g−1, with a capacity retention of 94.2% at ±32 A g−1. Fundamental characterization techniques, including scanning electron microcopy (SEM), energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDX), and Raman spectroscopy, are employed to analyze fiber morphology and composition. The dual functionality of CNTCDC fibers, as both actuators and energy storage elements, is demonstrated. Full article

With the rapid development of wearable electronics, traditional rigid thermal management materials face limitations in flexibility, conformability, and multi-physics adaptability. Low-dimensional carbon materials such as graphene and carbon nanotubes combine ultrahigh thermal conductivity with outstanding mechanical compliance, making them promising building blocks for flexible thermal regulation. This review summarizes recent advances in integrating these materials into textile architectures, mapping the evolution of this emerging field. Key topics include phonon-dominated heat transfer mechanisms, strategies for modulating interfacial thermal resistance, and dimensional effects across scales; beyond these intrinsic factors, hierarchical textile configurations further tailor macroscopic performance. We highlight how one-dimensional fiber bundles, two-dimensional woven fabrics, and three-dimensional porous networks construct multi-directional thermal pathways while enhancing porosity and stress tolerance. As for practical applications, the performance of carbon-based textiles in wearable systems, flexible electronic packaging, and thermal coatings is also critically assessed. Current obstacles—namely limited manufacturing scalability, interfacial mismatches, and thermal performance degradation under repeated deformation—are analyzed. To overcome these challenges, future studies should prioritize the co-design of structural and thermo-mechanical properties, the integration of multiple functionalities, and optimization guided by data-driven approaches. This review thus lays a solid foundation for advancing carbon-based smart textiles toward next-generation flexible thermal management technologies. Full article
