Parabens—specifically methylparaben (MeP), ethylparaben (EtP), propylparaben (PrP), and butylparaben (BuP)—are widely used substances in everyday life, particularly as preservatives in pharmaceutical and food products. However, these compounds are not effectively removed by conventional water and wastewater treatment processes, potentially causing disruptions to human homeostasis and the endocrine system. This study conducted a transport and dimensional analysis through simulation of the adsorption process for these parabens, using zinc chloride-activated carbon derived from spent coffee grounds (ACZnCl2) as the adsorbent, implemented via Aspen Properties® and Aspen Adsorption®. Simulations were performed for two inlet concentrations (50 mg/L and 100 mg/L) and two adsorption column heights (3 m and 4 m), considering a volumetric flow rate representative of a medium-sized city with approximately 100,000 inhabitants. The results showed that both density and surface tension of the parabens varied linearly with increasing temperature, and viscosity exhibited a marked reduction above 30 °C. Among the tested conditions, the configuration with 50 mg∙L−1 inlet concentration and a 4 m column height demonstrated the highest adsorption capacity and better performance under adsorption–desorption equilibrium. These findings indicate that the implementation of adsorption beds on an industrial scale in water and wastewater treatment systems is both environmentally and socially viable. Full article

The growing demand for sustainable plant-based dairy alternatives has spurred interest in valorizing agro-industrial byproducts like hazelnut cake, a protein-rich byproduct of oil extraction. This study developed formulations for vegan ice cream using unfermented (HIC) and Aspergillus oryzae-fermented hazelnut cake (FHIC), comparing their physicochemical, functional, and sensory properties to conventional dairy ice cream (DIC). Solid-state fermentation (72 h, 30 °C) enhanced the cake’s bioactive properties, and ice creams were characterized for composition, texture, rheology, melting behavior, antioxidant activity, and enzyme inhibition pre- and post-in vitro digestion. The results indicate that FHIC had higher protein content (64.64% vs. 58.02% in HIC) and unique volatiles (e.g., benzaldehyde and 3-methyl-1-butanol). While DIC exhibited superior overrun (15.39% vs. 4.01–7.00% in vegan samples) and slower melting, FHIC demonstrated significantly higher post-digestion antioxidant activity (4.73 μmol TE/g DPPH vs. 1.44 in DIC) and angiotensin-converting enzyme (ACE) inhibition (4.85–7.42%). Sensory evaluation ranked DIC highest for overall acceptability, with FHIC perceived as polarizing due to pronounced flavors. Despite textural challenges, HIC and FHIC offered nutritional advantages, including 18–30% lower calories and enhanced bioactive compounds. This study highlights fermentation as a viable strategy to upcycle hazelnut byproducts into functional vegan ice creams, although the optimization of texture and flavor is needed for broader consumer acceptance. The aim of the study was to evaluate the use of sunflower and sesame oilseed press cakes, which are by-products of oil extraction, as functional ingredients in cookie production. The quality characteristics of these by-products were assessed, including water activity, pH, total phenolic content, and antioxidant activity, and HPLC analysis of the phenolic compounds was performed. Subsequently, cookies were prepared by replacing wheat flour with 30% or 50% press cake. The addition of sunflower press cake significantly increased the total phenolic content (up to 8.6 mg GAE/g dm) and antioxidant activity (up to 75.9%) in the cookies, whereas adding sesame press cake showed a less pronounced effect, reaching 0.91 g GAE/g dm and 8.9% for total phenolic content and antioxidant activity, respectively. HPLC analysis indicated that chlorogenic acid and its derivatives dominated in sunflower-enriched cookies, while sesame samples contained lignans such as sesamol and sesamin. Our study shows that 50% substitution improves the health-promoting properties of cookies and does not differ significantly from the 30% level in consumer sensory evaluations. These findings support the use of sunflower and sesame press cakes as valuable ingredients in food applications. This represents an important step toward developing healthier and more nutritious food products while supporting the principles of the circular economy through the upcycling of valuable raw materials. The plant-based oil industry contributes significantly to food waste/by-products in the form of underutilized biomass, including oil pomace, cake/meal, seeds, peels, wastewater, etc. These waste/by-products contain a significant quantity of nutritious and bioactive compounds (phenolics, lignans, flavonoids, dietary fiber, proteins, and essential minerals) with proven health-promoting effects. The utilization of them as natural, cost-effective, and food-grade functional ingredients in novel food formulations holds considerable potential. This review highlights the potential of waste/by-products generated during plant-based oil processing as a promising source of bioactive compounds and covers systematic research, including recent studies focusing on innovative extraction and processing techniques. It also sheds light on their promising potential for valorization as food ingredients, with a focus on specific examples of food fortification. Furthermore, the potential for value creation in the food industry is emphasized, taking into account associated challenges and limitations, as well as future perspectives. Overall, the current information suggests that the valorization of plant-based oil industry waste and by-products for use in the food industry could substantially reduce malnutrition and poverty, generate favorable health outcomes, mitigate environmental concerns, and enhance economic profit in a sustainable way by developing health-promoting, environmentally sustainable food systems. Natural polymer materials are increasingly utilized in drilling fluid additives. Starch has come to be applied extensively due to its low cost and favorable fluid loss reduction properties. However, its poor temperature resistance and high viscosity limit its application in high-temperature wells. This study innovatively introduces for the first time diatomite as an inorganic material in the modification process of starch-based fluid loss additives. Through synergistic modification with acrylamide and acrylic acid, we successfully resolved the longstanding challenge of balancing temperature resistance with viscosity control in existing modification methods. The newly developed fluid loss additive demonstrates remarkable performance: It remains effective at 160 °C when used independently. When added to a 4% sodium bentonite base mud, it achieves an 80% fluid loss reduction rate—significantly higher than the 18.95% observed in conventional starch-based products. The resultant filter cake exhibits thin and compact characteristics. Moreover, this additive shows superior contamination resistance, tolerating 30% NaCl and 0.6% calcium contamination, outperforming other starch-based treatments. With starch content exceeding 75%, the product not only demonstrates enhanced performance but also achieves significant cost reduction compared to conventional starch products (typically containing < 50% starch content). Membrane technology is primarily used for the separation and purification of biotechnological products, which contain proteins and enzymes. Membrane fouling during crossflow filtration remains a significant challenge. This study aims to initially validate crossflow filtration models, particularly related to pore-blocking mechanisms, through a comparative analysis with dead-end filtration models. One crossflow microfiltration (MF) and six consecutive ultrafiltration (UF) stages were implemented to concentrate laccase extracts from Pleurotus ostreatus 202 fungi. The complete pore-blocking mechanism significantly impacts the MF, UF 1000, UF 100 and UF 10 stages, with the highest related filtration constant (KbF) estimated at 12.60 × 10−4 (m−1). Although the intermediate pore-blocking mechanism appears across all filtration stages, UF 100 is the most affected, with an associated filtration constant (KiF) of 16.70 (m−1). This trend is supported by the highest purification factor (6.95) and the presence of 65, 62 and 56 kDa laccases in the retentate. Standard pore blocking occurs at the end of filtration, only in the MF and UF 1000 stages, with filtration constants (KsF) of 29.83 (s−0.5m−0.5) and 31.17 (s−0.5m−0.5), respectively. The absence of cake formation and the volume of permeate recovered indicate that neither membrane was exposed to exhaustive fouling that could not be reversed by backwashing. Full article

Channeling in cementing causes interlayer interference, severely restricting oilfield recovery. Existing channeling plugging agents, such as cement and gels, often lead to reservoir damage or insufficient strength. Oil-soluble resin (OSR) particles show great potential in selective plugging of channeling fractures due to their excellent oil solubility, temperature/salt resistance, and high strength. However, their application is limited by the efficient filling and retention in deep fractures. This study innovatively combines the OSR particle plugging system with the mature rapid filtration loss plugging mechanism in drilling, systematically exploring the influence of particle size and sorting on their filtration, packing behavior, and plugging performance in channeling fractures. Through API filtration tests, visual fracture models, and high-temperature/high-pressure (100 °C, salinity 3.0 × 105 mg/L) core flow experiments, it was found that well-sorted large particles preferentially bridge in fractures to form a high-porosity filter cake, enabling rapid water filtration from the resin plugging agent. This promotes efficient accumulation of OSR particles to form a long filter cake slug with a water content <20% while minimizing the invasion of fine particles into matrix pores. The slug thermally coalesces and solidifies into an integral body at reservoir temperature, achieving a plugging strength of 5–6 MPa for fractures. In contrast, poorly sorted particles or undersized particles form filter cakes with low porosity, resulting in slow water filtration, high water content (>50%) in the filter cake, insufficient fracture filling, and significantly reduced plugging strength (<1 MPa). Finally, a double-slug strategy is adopted: small-sized OSR for temporary plugging of the oil layer injection face combined with well-sorted large-sized OSR for main plugging of channeling fractures. This strategy achieves fluid diversion under low injection pressure (0.9 MPa), effectively protects reservoir permeability (recovery rate > 95% after backflow), and establishes high-strength selective plugging. This study clarifies the core role of particle size and sorting in regulating the OSR plugging effect based on rapid filtration loss, providing key insights for developing low-damage, high-performance channeling plugging agents and scientific gradation of particle-based plugging agents. A comparative study was conducted to investigate membrane fouling control and treatment performance using natural surface water as the feed source. The evaluated processes included: (1) direct filtration–tubular ceramic membrane (DF-TCM, control); (2) coagulation–tubular ceramic membrane (C-TCM); and (3) coagulation–tubular ceramic membrane with concentrate recycling (C-TCM-CR). Experimental results demonstrated that under constant flux operation at 75 L/(m2·h) for 8 h, the C-TCM-CR process reduced the transmembrane pressure (TMP) increase by 83% and 35% compared to DF-TCM and C-TCM, respectively. Floc size distribution analysis and cake layer characterization revealed that the C-TCM-CR process enhanced coagulation efficiency and formed high-porosity cake layers on membrane surfaces, thereby mitigating fouling development. Notably, the coagulation-assisted processes demonstrated improved organic matter removal, with 13%, 10%, and 10% enhancement in CODMn, UV254, and medium molecular weight organics (2000–10,000 Da) removal compared to DF-TCM, along with a moderate enhancement in fluorescent substances removal efficiency. All three processes achieved over 99% turbidity removal efficiency, as the ceramic membranes demonstrate excellent filtration performance. Full article

In the Sahelian context characterized by the increasing scarcity of forage resources, this study investigated how climate change perceptions influence the adoption of cottonseed cake in pastoral and agro-pastoral systems in the Hauts-Bassins region of Burkina Faso. Drawing on the Subjective Expected Utility (SEU) theory and using a logit model estimated from survey data collected from 366 livestock farms, the analysis reveals that the perceived degradation of rangelands due to climate change is a key determinant of adoption. Over 40% of surveyed herders believed that climate change is negatively affecting the availability of natural forage. This heightened awareness is significantly associated with a greater likelihood of adopting cottonseed cake as a feed supplementation strategy. This study highlights the crucial role of cognitive factors in shaping adaptation decisions, beyond traditional economic and structural determinants. It underscores the importance of incorporating environmental perceptions into public policies supporting livestock systems and technological innovations in pastoral. Full article

To evaluate animal performance and meat quality, stoned olive cake and linseed were used in an experimental test conducted on thirty-six young Podolian bulls, divided into four groups: the control group (CON), OC group (with olive cake containing a 30% as-fed basis of stoned olive cake), EL group (with linseed containing a 15% as-fed basis of extruded linseed), and OCEL group (with olive cake + linseed containing 20% stoned olive cake and 10% extruded linseed). The results show that olive cake supplementation did not influence performance in vita or the post-slaughter animal measurements (final body weight, DMI, FCR, ADG, carcass weight, dressing percentage, and pH) (p > 0.05); this was not true of the TBARS and color measurements, for which the meat samples showed excellent values (p < 0.001), especially in diets supplemented with olive cake. In conclusion, incorporating olive cake and linseed into the diet of fattening cattle may be a way to utilize a by-product of the olive industry and naturally increase the nutritional value of meat and meat-based products in Mediterranean regions. This would reduce environmental impacts and promote the valorization of this local feed source in alignment with the principles of the circular economy. Full article

Camelina sativa (CS) is an emerging sustainable oilseed crop with interesting feed application potentialities. The research assessed the potentiality of Camelina sativa (CS) in the diet for free-range laying hens, aiming at reaching a nutritional claim. To this purpose, two feeding groups of hens (n = 100 Livorno hens, n = 25 hens/pen) were farmed outdoor and received either a Control diet, which was a commercial diet for laying hens, or a CS diet. The latter was formulated to include the 5% CS cake and 1% CS oil, replacing conventional feedstuffs. Diets were isoprotein and isoenergy and were available ad libitum throughout the laying period (February–September). At day 1, n = 12 eggs/diet were sampled to assess the initial proximate composition and FA profile. Every 7 days the sampling was repeated to analyze the eggs’ FA profile, up to day 35. At the end of the laying season, n = 6 hens/dietary treatment were slaughtered and subjected to meat quality evaluations. Results highlighted that a 28-day feeding was the period required to obtain 227 mg of C18:3 n-3 and 81 mg of C20:5 n-3 + C22:6 n-3/100 g egg, whereas a further 7 days of feeding trial were ineffective in further enhancing the omega-3 FA content of eggs. CS eggs were comparable to Control ones for overall physical traits, proximate composition, and shelf-life. In addition, at the end of the laying period, the meat of CS hens was also found to be healthier than that of Control ones, thanks to a higher omega-3 FA proportion (p < 0.01), which was, however, not sufficient to reach any nutritional claim. Instead, the proximate composition of CS meat was overall comparable to Control hens. In conclusion, the present research demonstrated that feeding Camelina sativa meal and oil to laying hens is feasible and allows to reach the nutritional claim in eggs “rich in omega-3 FA” after a feeding period of 28 days, without any negative effects on other eggs’ quality trials. Camelina sativa can thus be defined as a promising sustainable feedstuff for the poultry sector for diversification purposes and to enhance the nutritional quality of eggs. Full article

Therefore, this study aims to evaluate the physicochemical properties and antimicrobial activity of thermally processed pulverized oyster shells (TPOS) and citric acid-treated TPOS (TPOSc) compared with those of fibrous calcium carbonate (FCC) and coral-derived calcium product (CCP), which are used as reference materials. The solubility values were 0.7 mg/g for FCC, 0.5 mg/g for TPOS, 0.4 mg/g for TPOSc, and 0.05 mg/g for CCP. The average particle sizes were 476 (FCC), 1000 (TPOS and TPOSc), and 1981 nm (CCP). Scanning electron microscopy (SEM), energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS), and X-ray diffraction (XRD) analyses revealed calcium ion release and structural changes in TPOS and TPOSc. Antibacterial testing further confirmed that these samples exhibited significant antimicrobial activity. Furthermore, to assess their practical applicability, TPOS and TPOSc samples with antimicrobial properties were incorporated into rice cakes. All samples retained antimicrobial activity at 0.3 wt%, while higher concentrations led to deterioration in their textural properties. These findings support the potential of thermally processed oyster shell powders for food applications that require microbial control with minimal impact on product quality. Full article

The diversification of plant protein sources is a strategic priority for European food systems, particularly under the EU Green Deal and Farm to Fork strategies. In this study, dual production of full-fat soy (FFS) and expanded soybean cake (ESC) was evaluated using non-GMO soybeans cultivated under semi-organic conditions in Central Poland. Two agronomic systems—post-emergence mechanical weeding with rotary harrow weed control (P1) and conventional herbicide-based control (P2)—were compared over a four-year period. The P1 system produced consistently higher yields (e.g., 35.6 dt/ha in 2024 vs. 33.4 dt/ha in P2) and larger seed size (TSW: up to 223 g). Barothermal and press-assisted processing yielded FFS with protein content of 32.4–34.5% and oil content of 20.8–22.4%, while ESC exhibited enhanced characteristics: higher protein (37.4–39.0%), lower oil (11.6–13.3%), and elevated dietary fiber (15.8–16.3%). ESC also showed reduced anti-nutritional factors (e.g., trypsin inhibitors and phytic acid) and remained microbiologically and oxidatively stable over six months. The semi-organic P1 system offers a scalable, low-input approach to local soy production, while the dual-product model supports circular, zero-waste protein systems aligned with EU sustainability targets. Influence of Membrane Salt Rejection Properties on Cake-Enhanced Concentration Polarization Effects During Colloidal Fouling of Nanofiltration Membranes

The build-up of a fouling layer on the membrane surface is believed to deteriorate flux and salt rejection by hindering back-diffusion of rejected salts, a phenomenon called cake-enhanced concentration polarization (CECP). Nevertheless, CECP effects have not been linked to the salt rejection properties of the membrane. Furthermore, the decline in salt rejection during fouling has not been related to the decreasing flux, to elucidate the effects of flux on solution rejection as described by the solution-diffusion (SD) model. Therefore, this work examined whether CECP is substantial in membranes with poor salt-rejection properties. Fouling was performed using sodium alginate, Al2O3, latex, and SiO2. The effects of fouling on salt rejection were studied using two nanofiltration (NF) membranes, namely NF270 membrane (46% NaCl rejection) and NF90 membrane (>97% NaCl rejection). The measured flux and salt rejection profiles were compared to those predicted by the CECP and SD models. Overall, the flux declined more (30–60%) for the NF90 membrane (contact angle: 50 ± 3°) compared to the NF270 membrane (10–55%, contact angle: 39 ± 2°) under similar hydrodynamic conditions. Moreover, fouling had more effects on NaCl rejection for the NF90 membrane (2–45% decline) compared to the NF270 membrane (10–30% decline). The decrease in NaCl rejection for the NF90 membrane was ascribed to CECP effects and declining flux. Contrary, CECP effects were less important for the NF270 membrane, and rejection declined due to reduction in flux as predicted by the SD model, indicating that CECP may not be predominant in membranes that poorly reject salts. Current treatment methods for desulfurization wastewater in the ship exhaust gas cleaning (EGC) system face several problems, including process complexity, unstable performance, large spatial requirements, and high energy consumption. This study investigates rotating dynamic filtration (RDF) as an efficient treatment approach through experimental testing, theoretical analysis, and pilot-scale validation. Flux increases with temperature and pressure but decreases with feed concentration, remaining unaffected by circulation flow. For a small membrane (152 mm), flux consistently increases with rotational speed across all pressures. For a large membrane (374 mm), flux increases with rotational speed at 300 kPa but firstly increases and then decreases at 100 kPa. Filtrate turbidity in all experiments complies with regulatory standards. Due to the unique hydrodynamic characteristics of RDF, back pressure reduces the effective transmembrane pressure, whereas shear force mitigates concentration polarization and cake layer formation. Separation performance is governed by the balance between these two forces. The specific energy consumption of RDF is only 10–30% that of cross-flow filtration (CFF). Under optimized pilot-scale conditions, the wastewater was concentrated 30-fold, with filtrate turbidity consistently below 2 NTU, outperforming CFF. Moreover, continuous operation proves more suitable for marine environments. Full article
