Background and Clinical Significance: This case report highlights the rare but potentially sight-threatening presentation of corneal ulcers associated with methamphetamine abuse. Identifying the signs of illicit drug use is critical, as ocular complications may be overlooked without proper social history or lab confirmation. Case Presentation: A 48-year-old Hispanic male presented with progressive bilateral vision loss over four weeks, describing his condition as “blind vision.” Two weeks earlier, he had visited the emergency room after a fall caused by impaired vision and was prescribed insulin, metronidazole, and fluoroquinolone drops. At ophthalmology follow-up, visual acuity was 20/400 OD and 20/800 OS. Examination revealed bilateral stromal corneal ulcers with infiltrates. Notable systemic signs—pockmarks, poor dentition, thin body habitus, and jittery behavior—raised suspicion for methamphetamine use. He was treated with bandage contact lenses, dehydrated amniotic membranes, and a steroid-antibiotic combination drop. Conclusions: This case underscores the importance of recognizing physical signs of methamphetamine abuse, even in the absence of disclosed history. Emergency room laboratory testing confirmed methamphetamine use. Awareness of drug-induced ocular effects allows for appropriate patient education, timely intervention, and referral to addiction services. Patients should be warned that continued drug use may result in irreversible vision loss. Full article

Poorly differentiated thyroid malignancy, a rare histological type of aggressive thyroid malignancy with associated difficulties and gaps in its histological and molecular characterization, might lead to challenging clinical presentations that require a prompt multimodal approach. This case study involved a 56-year-old, non-smoking male with a rapidly developing goiter (within 2–3 months) in association with mild, non-specific neck compressive symptoms. His medical history was irrelevant. A voluminous goiter with substernal and posterior extension up to the vertebral bodies was detected using an ultrasound and computed tomography (CT) scan and required emergency thyroidectomy. He had normal thyroid function, as well as negative thyroid autoimmunity and serum calcitonin. The surgery was successful upon “Y” incision, which was used to give better access to the retrosternal component in order to avoid a sternotomy. Post-operatively, the subject developed hypoparathyroidism-related hypocalcemia and showed a very high serum thyroglobulin level (>550 ng/mL). The pathological report confirmed poorly differentiated, multifocal thyroid carcinoma (with an insular, solid, and trabecular pattern) against a background of papillary carcinoma (pT3b, pN0, and pM1; L1; V2; Pn0; R1; and stage IVB). The subject received 200 mCi of radioiodine therapy for 6 weeks following the thoracic surgery. Whole-body scintigraphy was performed before radioiodine therapy and showed increased radiotracer uptake at the thyroid remnants and pre-tracheal levels. Additionally, single-photon emission computed tomography combined with CT (SPECT/CT) was performed, and confirmed the areas of intense uptake, in addition to a moderate uptake in the right and left pulmonary parenchyma, suggesting lung metastasis. To conclude, an overall low level of statistical evidence exists regarding poorly differentiated malignancy in substernal goiters, and the data also remains scarce regarding the impact of genetic and molecular configurations, such as the BRAF-positive profile, in this specific instance. Furthermore, multimodal management includes additional diagnosis methods such as SPECT/CT, while long-term multilayered therapy includes tyrosine kinase inhibitors if the outcome shows an iodine-resistant profile with a poor prognosis. Awareness remains a key factor in cases of a poorly differentiated carcinoma presenting as a rapidly growing goiter with substernal extension in an apparently healthy adult. A surgical approach, while varying with the surgeon’s skills, represents a mandatory step to ensure a better prognosis. In addition to a meticulous histological characterization, genetic/molecular features provide valuable information regarding the outcome and can further help with the decision to use new anti-cancer drugs if tumor response upon radioiodine therapy is no longer achieved; such a development is expected in this disease stage in association with a BRAF-positive configuration. This study investigates the integration of LTspice simulations and structured reflective practices within a project-based learning (PBL) framework in a Microelectronic Circuits course. The course was designed to improve students’ conceptual understanding, problem-solving abilities, and engagement by embedding simulation-based assignments and guided reflections within a final design project. A qualitative case study was conducted with 49 third-year undergraduate electrical engineering students. The data sources included structured reflection submissions, researcher observations, and evaluations of project presentations. Thematic analysis identified five recurring themes: linking theory to practice, iterative problem-solving strategies, metacognitive awareness, peer engagement, and reflections on integration challenges and benefits. The results indicate that the LTspice simulations enabled the students to visualize circuit behavior, experiment with design parameters, and observe the effects of design trade-offs. The integration of structured reflection prompted deeper learning by helping the students recognize misconceptions, articulate troubleshooting strategies, and build confidence in circuit analysis. Although some students initially struggled with the complexity of the simulation software, the iterative and collaborative nature of the PBL process increased their motivation and promoted meaningful engagement. This study contributes to the growing body of research on active learning in engineering education and offers practical recommendations for implementing simulation-based learning environments that promote critical thinking, metacognition, and technical competence. This opinion article aims to highlight the potential mechanisms behind a specific stage of Yoga Nidra (YN) practice, i.e., the formulation and repetition of Sankalpa, encouraging scholars to further study it and providing athletes with suggestions on how to use it for their sport and health. YN can be defined as a meditation practice encompassing a sequence of breathing, guided body awareness, visualization and cognitive restructuring process exercises. According to preliminary results, YN stimulates a hypnagogic state generally associated with improvements in sleep parameters, thus enhancing recovery and health in different populations including athletes. Cognitive restructuring processes can be stimulated by the formulation of Sankalpa, a YN element comparable to positive self-instructions used to counteract dysfunctional cognitions. From a practical standpoint, the formulation of Sankalpa involves expressing an intention that could positively influence body, mind and emotions. For example, Sankalpa might stop or reverse unhealthy thought patterns, resulting in greater mental health. It might also foster intrinsic motivation and enhance emotional intelligence by strengthening mental resilience. In particular, athletes could use Sankalpa as an affirmation to awaken any strength they may feel is necessary to provide them with stress–recovery balance and mental health. However, additional research on this topic is needed to better elucidate Sankalpa’s mechanisms/effects and better integrate its formulation into sport programs. Full article

Prior research from Ghana suggests psychosocial stress is associated with lower body mass index (BMI) and waist circumference (WC), both markers of adiposity, contrasting with meta-analyses showing positive associations in other settings. This study aimed to explore how stress was associated with markers of adiposity in urban Ghanaian adults. Data included 854 adults from the Contextual Awareness, Response and Evaluation Diabetes in Ghana survey carried out in November–December 2022 in Ga Mashie, a deprived area of the capital Accra. Associations between self-perceived stress (Perceived Stress Scale 10, categorized into low and average–high stress) and BMI or WC-for-height ratio (WHR) were assessed using linear regression. Results were adjusted for survey design and confounders and stratified by sex. Greater stress was associated with higher BMI and WHR in females (adjusted coeff. [95% CI]: BMI: 2.3 [0.5, 4.0], WHR: 0.03 [0.00, 0.06]). No associations were found in males. These findings highlight the need to understand the complex interactions between gender, stress, and increasing burdens of obesity and other associated non-communicable diseases in urban African settings, with a view to designing context-specific interventions to reduce risk. Simple Baseline has become a dominant benchmark in human pose estimation (HPE) due to its excellent performance and simple design. However, its “strong encoder + simple decoder” architectural paradigm suffers from two core limitations: (1) its non-branching, linear deconvolutional path prevents it from leveraging the rich, fine-grained features generated by the encoder at multiple scales and (2) the model lacks explicit prior knowledge of both the absolute positions and structural layout of human keypoints. To address these issues, this paper introduces AFJ-PoseNet, a new architecture that deeply enhances the Simple Baseline framework. First, we restructure Simple Baseline’s original linear decoder into a U-Net-like multi-scale fusion path, introducing intermediate features from the encoder via skip connections. For efficient fusion, we design a novel Attention Fusion Module (AFM), which dynamically gates the flow of incoming detailed features through a context-aware spatial attention mechanism. Second, we propose the Joint-Aware Positional Encoding (JAPE) module, which innovatively combines a fixed global coordinate system with learnable, joint-specific spatial priors. This design injects both absolute position awareness and statistical priors of the human body structure. Our ablation studies on the MPII dataset validate the effectiveness of each proposed enhancement, with our full model achieving a mean PCKh of 88.915, a 0.341 percentage point improvement over our re-implemented baseline. On the more challenging COCO val2017 dataset, our ResNet-50-based AFJ-PoseNet achieves an Average Precision (AP) of 72.6%. While this involves a slight trade-off in Average Recall for higher precision, this result represents a significant 2.2 percentage point improvement over our re-implemented baseline (70.4%) and also outperforms other strong, publicly available models like DARK (72.4%) and SimCC (72.1%) under comparable settings, demonstrating the superiority and competitiveness of our proposed enhancements. Background and Objectives: Ultrasound measurement of thyroid volume is not routinely performed in children without suspected thyroid disorders. However, pediatricians must be aware of the normal thyroid volume values in children in order to recognize and treat thyroid disorders in children on time. Therefore, this study aimed to explore factors that influence thyroid volume in children aged 4 to 18 years and to provide descriptive data on thyroid volume across this age range. Materials and Methods: This was a prospective, non-interventional cross-sectional study conducted on a population of children aged 4 to 18 years without confirmed thyroid disorders. We used validated formulas for calculating thyroid volume that integrate the linear dimensions of this organ, such as length, width, and depth, as well as the appropriate correction factor. The Spearman or Pearson correlation coefficient was calculated to assess the relationship between total thyroid volume and various continuous variables, while multiple linear regression analysis was used to evaluate the effect of potential predictors on the total thyroid volume. Results: The study included 100 children, predominantly girls (75.0%). Significant positive correlations with thyroid volume were found for age, height, weight, body mass index (BMI), body surface area, serum creatinine, birthweight, and number of comorbidities, while calcitonin was negatively correlated with children’s thyroid volume. We identified age, BMI, and serum creatinine as significant independent positive predictors of thyroid volume in children. Conclusions: Age, BMI, and serum creatinine emerged as significant independent positive predictors of thyroid volume and should be considered when interpreting pediatric thyroid ultrasound measurements. Accurate full-body motion reconstruction from sparse sensors is crucial for VR/AR applications but remains challenging due to the under-constrained nature of limited observations and the computational constraints of mobile platforms. This paper presents LGSIK-Poser, a unified and lightweight framework that supports real-time motion reconstruction from heterogeneous sensor configurations, including head-mounted displays, handheld controllers, and up to three optional inertial measurement units, without requiring reconfiguration across scenarios. The model integrates temporally grouped LSTM modeling, anatomically structured graph-based reasoning, and region-specific inverse kinematics refinement to enhance end-effector accuracy and structural consistency. Personalized body shape is estimated using user-specific anthropometric priors within the SMPL model, a widely adopted parametric representation of human shape and pose. Experiments on the AMASS benchmark demonstrate that LGSIK-Poser achieves state-of-the-art accuracy with up to 48% improvement in hand localization, while reducing model size by 60% and latency by 22% compared to HMD-Poser. The system runs at 63.65 FPS with only 3.74 M parameters, highlighting its suitability for real-time immersive applications. Full article

This study aims to evaluate the level of awareness and practical adoption of green wall systems in the Nigerian construction industry. It seeks to examine the current state of green wall implementation and recommend strategies to enhance their integration into construction practices among Nigerian construction professionals. A thorough review of the existing literature was conducted to identify different types of green wall systems. Insights from this review informed the design of a structured questionnaire, which was distributed to construction professionals based in Lagos State. The data collected were analyzed using statistical tests. The study reveals that while there is generally high awareness of green wall systems among Nigerian construction professionals, the practical use remains low, with just 8 out of the 18 systems being actively implemented, eclipsing the mean value of 3.0. The findings underscore the need for targeted education, industry incentives, and increased advocacy to encourage the use of green wall systems in the Nigerian construction sector. The results have significant implications for the Nigerian construction industry. The limited awareness and adoption of green wall systems highlight the need for strategic actions from policymakers, industry leaders and educational institutions. Promoting the use of green walls could drive more sustainable building practices, improve environmental outcomes and support the broader goals of decarbonization and circularity in construction. This research adds to the body of knowledge on sustainable construction by offering a detailed evaluation of green wall awareness and adoption within the Nigerian context. While green wall systems have been studied globally, this research provides a regional perspective, which in this case focuses on Lagos State. The study’s recognition of the gap between awareness and implementation highlights an important area for future research and industry development. Full article

Acromegaly is caused by an excessive secretion of growth hormone and the secondary elevation of IGF-1 levels, leading to progressive changes in multiple body systems, including the craniofacial region and oral cavity. Dental manifestations such as mandibular overgrowth, macroglossia, malocclusion, periodontal disease, and prosthetic difficulties represent not only a clinical component of the disease but also a significant therapeutic and diagnostic challenge. The aim of this review is to present the current state of knowledge on the relationship between acromegaly and oral health and to analyze the role of interdisciplinary collaboration between endocrinologists and dentists in patient care. For this narrative review, a literature search was conducted in the PubMed, Scopus, and Web of Science databases covering the period from 2000 to 2025. Sixty-two peer-reviewed publications meeting the methodological and thematic criteria were included in the analysis, including original studies, meta-analyses, systematic reviews, and case reports. The results indicate significant correlations between disease activity and the severity of periodontal and microbiological changes, while effective endocrine treatment only results in the partial regression of morphological changes. Particular attention was given to the role of the dentist in recognizing the early symptoms of the disease, planning prosthetic and surgical treatment, and monitoring therapy-related complications. Interdisciplinary collaboration models, including integrated clinics and co-managed care, were also described as optimal systemic solutions for improving treatment quality. The conclusion drawn from the analysis are as follows: there is a need for the permanent integration of dentistry into the standard of interdisciplinary care for patients with acromegaly, in both diagnostic and therapeutic dimensions. Increasing awareness among dentists and developing integrated collaboration models may reduce the time to diagnosis, improve patients’ quality of life, and enable the more effective management of craniofacial complications in the course of this rare disease. Environmental protection has become one of the key challenges of our time. This has led to an increase in pro-environmental activities in the field of cosmetics and household chemicals, where manufacturers are increasingly trying to meet the expectations of consumers who are aware of the potential risks associated with the production of cosmetics and household chemistry products. This is one of the most important challenges of today’s industry, given that some of the raw materials still commonly used, such as surfactants, may be toxic to aquatic organisms. Many companies are choosing to use natural raw materials that have satisfactory performance properties but are also environmentally friendly. In addition, modern products are also characterized by reduced consumption of water, resources, and energy in production processes. These measures reduce the carbon footprint and reduce the amount of plastic packaging required. In the present study, seven formulations of environmentally friendly car shampoo concentrates were developed, based entirely on mixtures of bio-based surfactants. The developed formulations were tested for application on the car body surface, allowing the selection of the two best products. For these selected formulations, an in-depth physicochemical analysis was carried out, including pH, density, and viscosity measurements. Comparison of the results with commercial products available on the market was also performed. Additionally, using the multiple light scattering method, the foamability and foam stability were determined for the car shampoos developed. The results obtained indicate the very high application potential of the products under study, which combine high performance and environmental concerns. Full article

Integration and Symbiosis: Medievalism in Giulio Aleni’s Translation of Catholic Liturgy in Late Imperial China

This essay provides a fine-grained analysis of selected passages of Giulio Aleni (艾儒略 1582–1649)’s translation of Catholic liturgy into classical Chinese in late imperial China. It focuses on the hitherto underexplored relationships between Aleni’s resort to medieval Aristotelianism and Thomism, as well as his translation-based introduction of Catholic Eucharistic theology into China. The case studies here revolve around Aleni’s Chinese translation of Aristotelian-Thomistic hylomorphism, with a focus on his interpretation of “anima” (i.e., the soul, which corresponds largely to linghun 靈魂 in Chinese), which is a multifaceted Western concept that pertains simultaneously to Aristotelian-Thomistic philosophy and Eucharistic theology. It is argued that in his overarching project of introducing Western learnings (i.e., 西學) to sixteenth- and seventeenth-century China, Aleni’s attention is centered primarily on the body-soul and form-matter relationship. This is, as understood here, motivated to a great extent by his scholarly awareness that properly informing Chinese Catholics of the Aristotelian-Thomistic underpinning of Western metaphysics enacts an indispensable role in introducing Catholic liturgy into China, notably the mystery of the Eucharist and Transubstantiation that would not have been effectively introduced to China without having the Western philosophical underpinnings already made available to Chinese intellectuals. Aleni’s use of medieval European cultural legacy thus requires more in-depth analysis vis-à-vis his translational poetics in China. Accordingly, the intellectual and liturgical knowledge in Aleni’s Chinese œuvres shall be investigated associatively, and the medievalism embodied by Aleni offers a valid entry point and productive critical prism. Background/Objectives: Since breast cancer (BC) survival rates have increased to 91% at 5 years and 80% at 15 years postdiagnosis, there is a growing awareness of the importance of addressing the long-term well-being of patients. Consequently, integrative oncology, which combines standard therapies with complementary approaches (nutrition, mind–body practices, and lifestyle modifications), has emerged as a patient-centred model aimed at improving symptom management, treatment adherence, and overall quality of life (QoL). This study aims to demonstrate how integrative therapies can benefit body composition, phase angle, and fluid and electrolyte balance through bioelectrical impedance analysis (BIA). Methods: This study considers a patient who underwent BC surgery and was enrolled in the AMICO clinic for anamnesis, as well as their oncological pathology data, assessment of QoL, and BIA. The breast surgeon specialising in integrative oncology therapies prescribed the patient curcumin and polydatin, moderate physical activity, a balanced diet, and Qigong sessions. The patient underwent monitoring through haematochemical analysis, BIA, and a QoL questionnaire, with follow-up every four months. Results: Between 4 and 12 months, fat mass (FM) and body mass index (BMI) markedly decreased, whereas fat-free mass (FFM), total body water (TBW), and skeletal muscle mass (SMM) increased progressively. Moreover, the improvements in the Na/K ratio and phase angle (PhA) suggest a shift toward better electrolyte and fluid balance and enhanced cellular integrity and membrane function. Equally outstanding were her psychological benefits in terms of mood, sleep, anxiety, and melancholy. Conclusions: Patient progress in body composition, metabolic function, pain management, and psychological status measured during the 12-month follow-up demonstrates the potential benefits of an integrative approach to supportive cancer care. Occlusion remains a major challenge in person re-identification, as it often leads to incomplete or misleading visual cues. To address this issue, we propose a dual-branch occlusion-aware network (DOAN), which explicitly and implicitly enhances the model’s capability to perceive and handle occlusions. The proposed DOAN framework comprises two synergistic branches. In the first branch, we introduce an Occlusion-Aware Semantic Attention (OASA) module to extract semantic part features, incorporating a parallel channel and spatial attention (PCSA) block to precisely distinguish between pedestrian body regions and occlusion noise. We also generate occlusion-aware parsing labels by combining external human parsing annotations with occluder masks, providing structural supervision to guide the model in focusing on visible regions. In the second branch, we develop an occlusion-aware recovery (OAR) module that reconstructs occluded pedestrians to their original, unoccluded form, enabling the model to recover missing semantic information and enhance occlusion robustness. Extensive experiments on occluded, partial, and holistic benchmark datasets demonstrate that DOAN consistently outperforms existing state-of-the-art methods. Full article

Treated but Uncontrolled: Characterizing Hypertension in a Sample of 357 Older Adults in the Southeastern United States

Background/Objectives: Hypertension (HTN) continues to be a leading cause of death and disability in older adults, especially in the southeastern United States. A cross-sectional study was conducted to evaluate the relationships among measured, diagnosed, and treated (HTN) in community-dwelling adults participating in student-led health screenings in eastern Alabama. Methods: Between 2017 and 2019, students from health-related disciplines facilitated screenings at 23 community and independent living sites to conduct health assessments, including measuring blood pressure (BP), obtaining medical history, and evaluating current prescriptions. Statistical analyses including chi-square tests, t-tests, and backward stepwise linear regression were performed. Results: The current sample includes data from 357 adults aged 60 to 99 years (mean age 74.6 ± 8.7), who were 70.9% females, 60.8% identifying as Black/African American (BA), and 36.8% residing in rural areas. The majority of clients had a prior HTN diagnosis (71.1%) and/or currently measured HTN (78.7%). Forty-three percent of adults screened had measured, diagnosed, and pharmaceutically treated HTN, while 31% had measured but untreated HTN. Black clients had higher measured systolic and diastolic BP and were more likely to also have been diagnosed with HTN (p < 0.05 for all). Linear regression indicated that lower systolic BP was predicted by not living alone (p = 0.003), White race (p = 0.004), and previous HTN diagnosis (p = 0.012), while female gender (p = 0.079) and decreasing body mass index (p = 0.053) had marginal predictive value. Conclusions: These results indicate that awareness and screening of HTN in this population are noteworthy, though management of the disease through ongoing screening and referrals is essential to reduce disparities.
