This work evaluated the effect of coffee oil epoxide (COE), produced from coffee waste, on thermal, mechanical, barrier, and exudation resistance properties of poly(3-hydroxybutyrate-co-3-hydroxyvalerate)/natural rubber (PHBV/NR) blends. Building upon previously published 0.3% COE results, this study examined 0.4% and 0.75% concentrations to optimize performance. Thermal analysis revealed that COE incorporation significantly enhanced chain mobility, with glass transition temperature depressions of 6.1 °C and 7.4 °C for 0.4% and 0.75% COE formulations, respectively, compared to unplasticized PHBV/NR blends. Crystallinity decreased from 54.5% (PHBV/NR) to 52.6% and 51.9% with increasing plasticizer concentration, while melting temperatures decreased by 3.9% and 4.9%, confirming improved polymer chain mobility. Mechanical properties demonstrated COE’s plasticizing effectiveness, with tensile strength decreasing by 13.3% (0.4% COE) and 16.2% (0.75% COE) compared to PHBV/NR blends. Young’s modulus similarly decreased by 21.0% and 24.0%, while elongation at break improved slightly with increasing COE content. Barrier properties improved substantially across all concentrations: water vapor transmission rates decreased from 4.05 g/m2·h (PHBV/NR) to 1.55 g/m2·h (0.3% COE) and 0.67 g/m2·h for 0.4% and 0.75% COE, attributed to COE’s hydrophobic nature. SEM morphological analysis confirmed improved phase compatibility at 0.40% COE, with reduced rubber droplet size and homogeneous surface morphology. Exudation testing revealed excellent retention (0.21–0.53 wt% loss over 63 days). Thermoplastic starch (TPS) nanocomposites with unprecedentedly high loadings of up to 15 wt.% of the nano-clays Laponite (LAP; a synthetic product capable of good dispersion in suitable media) or Montmorillonite (MMT; modified with dialkyldimethylammonium chloride) were prepared by means of our new, two-step TPS preparation protocol. In both the TPS/LAP and TPS/MMT composites, we achieved perfect dispersion and extensive exfoliation of the nano-clays, resulting in pronounced improvements in mechanical performance (modulus increased up to one order of magnitude) and in excellent gas-barrier properties (extremely small permeabilities for O2, CO2, and even H2). MMT, owing to its larger platelet size and to the formation of partially exfoliated multi-layer structures, generated a percolating filler network that provided particularly strong reinforcement, especially at 15 wt.% loading. LAP, though more completely exfoliated, generated a somewhat smaller mechanical reinforcement, but it more strongly increased processing viscosity due to its high specific surface area, which generated highly stable physical crosslinking that persisted even at processing temperatures of T ≥ 120 °C. Efficient matrix–filler interactions were confirmed by thermogravimetric analysis, where the better-exfoliated LAP generated a higher stabilization. The combination of strong mechanical reinforcement with outstanding gas-barrier properties makes the TPS/MMT and TPS/LAP nanocomposites attractive for food-packaging applications, where their natural origin, non-toxicity, bio-degradability, and abundance of nanocomposite components are an additional bonus. Soybean wax is a sustainable alternative to synthetic polymeric coatings in packaging due to its renewable, environmentally benign, and hydrophobic properties. In order to be effectively applied, however, soybean wax must be emulsified in water. The present work compares two stabilization approaches for soybean wax emulsions: a conventional surfactant-based emulsion (SE) using a mixture of nonionic surfactants (Span-80 and Tween-80), and a Pickering emulsion (PE) using cellulose nanocrystals combined with sodium alginate (CNC-SA) as an anionic stabilizer. The SE produced stable emulsions at 6 wt% Span-80/Tween-80 (at a HLBmix value of 10) with a mean droplet size of 449 nm but limited storage stability (approximately 7 days under ambient conditions), while the PE achieved superior stability (approximately 1 month) at 1 wt% CNC-SA with a mean droplet size of 740 nm. The stabilized SE and PE were subsequently applied as coatings on three different types of paper substrates: northern bleached kraft (NBK) paper, copy paper, and cellulose nanofiber (CNF)-coated NBK paper. When applied to northern bleached kraft (NBK) paper, the SE coatings provided minimal improvements in barrier performance. The Cobb 60 value decreased slightly from 125 g/m2 (control-no coating) to 86 g/m2, indicating a negligible water barrier with immediate water absorption upon contact. In contrast, the Cobb 60 value of the PE-coated NBK paper decreased markedly from 125 g/m2 to 39 g/m2, confirming that the PE coating substantially enhances water resistance. The SE coating displayed a significant loss of water contact angle (WCA) from 85° to 0° within 20 s, showing limited water holdout capacity, whereas PE-coated NBK paper demonstrated strong water holdout, with the WCA decreasing only from 94° to 85° over 5 min. The SE coating achieved only a 14% reduction in water vapor transmission rate (WVTR), while the PE coating provided a greater reduction of 30%. In terms of oil resistance, both emulsion systems significantly enhanced the kit rating of the papers tested, e.g., from kit number 0 to 6–9 (paper dependent). The SE coating, however, experienced a substantial reduction in barrier integrity after folding, while the PE coating largely retained its oil barrier properties. Furthermore, the SE coating reduced the tensile strength of NBK paper by 41%, whereas the PE coating reduced it by only 7%. Overall, the comparative findings indicate that although the SE generated a smaller mean particle size, it offered minimal improvement in the water and oil barrier performance of paper and had a limited storage life. In contrast, the PE generated a larger mean particle size, but provided substantially greater water and oil resistance, and enhanced mechanical strength retention. In addition, the PE displayed an effective storage life of at least one month. The Pickering emulsion, formulated with all biologically derived components, therefore represents a viable, sustainable, bio-based alternative to synthetic polymeric coatings for packaging applications. In an effort to reduce global dependence on fossil-based polymers and advance toward a more sustainable materials industry, research over recent decades has increasingly focused on the development of bio-based polymers and broadening their potential applications. Within this context, the present study investigates nanocomposites based on poly(butylene succinate-co-butylene adipate) (PBSA), reinforced with two types of nanofillers: silicon dioxide nanoparticles (SiO2 NPs) and cellulose nanofibrils (CNFs). The main objective of this work is to examine how the morphology, geometry, and chemical nature of the nanofillers influence the thermal, mechanical, and barrier properties of PBSA, as well as its biodegradability. For each nanofiller, three formulations were prepared, containing 1, 2, and 5 wt% of filler, respectively. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) analysis confirmed good dispersion and minimal aggregation in the SiO2-based systems, whereas marked aggregation was observed in the CNF-based samples. Thermal analysis indicated that the intrinsic thermal properties of neat PBSA were largely preserved. Mechanical testing revealed improvements in both the elastic modulus and elongation at break for most nanocomposite samples. In particular, CNFs provided the most consistent reinforcing effect, with enhancements of approximately 40% in the elastic modulus (495.4 vs. 356.4 GPa in neat PBSA) and 52% in elongation at the break (185.1 vs. 122.0% in neat PBSA) with 5 wt% loading. Additionally, the incorporation of nanofillers did not alter the surface hydrophilicity, but it did improve the oxygen barrier performance and enhanced disintegration under composting conditions. Overall, these findings demonstrate the promising potential of PBSA-based nanocomposites for sustainable rigid packaging applications. Full article

Structural and physicochemical deterioration in frozen foods is largely driven by ice crystal formation and growth during storage. Although biofoams offer sustainable alternatives to plastic packaging, bio-based systems designed to mitigate ice crystal-induced quality loss remain limited. In this study, a sodium alginate-based biofoam was synthesized via a facile one-pot method and evaluated for frozen fried chicken packaging. Its moisture, mechanical, and optical properties were compared with those of conventional plastic and paper packaging. The quality of frozen fried chicken was assessed in terms of moisture absorption, color, texture, pH, lipid oxidation (TBARs), and the overall appearance under different freezing conditions. The alginate biofoam exhibited exceptionally high moisture absorption (>2400%) due to its porous and hydrophilic structure, enabling effective moisture management during frozen storage. Samples packaged with the biofoam showed reduced moisture loss, lower lipid oxidation, and improved color and surface texture stability compared with conventional packaging, particularly under freeze–thaw conditions. These findings demonstrate that sodium alginate-based biofoam is a promising eco-friendly packaging material for maintaining the physicochemical quality of frozen ready-to-eat foods. Full article

Microbial contamination of food is a crucial cause of food spoilage and foodborne diseases, posing a severe threat to global public health. Although chemical preservatives are effective, their potential hazards to human health and the environment, coupled with the growing demand for “clean label” products, have driven the search for natural alternatives. Lactic acid bacteria (LAB), recognized as the Generally Recognized as Safe (GRAS) microorganisms, have emerged as the promising bio-preservatives due to their safety, effectiveness, and multifunctionality. This review systematically summarized the core antimicrobial properties of LAB, including their inhibitory spectrum against foodborne pathogens, spoilage microorganisms, viruses, parasites, and their ability to degrade toxic substances such as mycotoxins, pesticides, and heavy metals. Key inhibitory mechanisms of LAB are highlighted, encompassing the production of antimicrobial metabolites, leading to metabolism disruption and cell membrane damage, nutrition and niche competition, quorum-sensing interference, and anti-biofilm formation. Furthermore, recent advances in LAB applications in preserving various food matrices (meat, dairy products, fruits and vegetables, cereals) are integrated, including their roles in enhancing food sensory quality, extending shelf life, and retaining nutritional value. The review also discusses critical factors influencing LAB’s inhibitory activity (medium composition, culture conditions, ionic components, pathway regulator, etc.) and the challenges associated with the application of LAB. Finally, future research directions are outlined, including the novel LAB and metabolites exploration, AI-driven cultural condition optimization, genetic engineering application, nano-encapsulation and active packaging development, and building up the LAB-based cellular factories. In conclusion, LAB and their antimicrobial metabolites hold great promise as green and safe food preservatives. This review is to provide comprehensive theoretical support for the rational improvement and efficient application of LAB-based natural food preservatives, contributing to the development of a safer and more sustainable food processing and preservation systems. Driven by environmental concerns, the packaging industry is shifting toward high-performance and bio-based coating alternatives. In this research, poly(methylmethacrylate) (PMMA) and modified cellulose nanocrystal (m-CNC) were employed as reinforcing agents to develop sustainable poly (lactic acid)-based coatings for packaging applications. Various formulations, influenced by polymer matrix blends and m-CNC loadings (1–5%), were prepared using solvent and applied as protective coating on cardboard paper substrates. The grammage of polymeric coatings (CG) on paper was also investigated using various wet film thicknesses (i.e., 150–250 μm). Accordingly, key parameters including water contact angle, thermal behavior, mechanical performances and barrier properties were systematically evaluated to assess the effectiveness of the developed nanocomposite coatings. As a result, nonylphenol ethoxylate surfactant-modified cellulose nanocrystals exhibited good dispersion and stable suspension in chloroform for one hour, improving compatibility and interaction of polymer–CNC fillers. The water vapor permeability (WVP) of PLA-coated papers was significantly reduced by blending PMMA and increasing the content of m-CNC nanofillers. Furthermore, CNC incorporation enhanced the oil resistance of PLA/PMMA-coated cardboard. Pronounced improvements in barrier properties were observed for paper substrates coated with dry coat weight or CG of ~20 g/m2 (corresponding to 250 μm wet film thickness). Coatings based on blended polymer—particularly those reinforced with nanofillers—markedly enhanced the hydrophobicity of the cardboard papers. SEM-microscopy confirmed the structural integrity and morphology of the nanocomposite coatings. Regarding mechanical properties, the upgraded nanocomposite copolymer (PLA-75%/PMMA-25%/m-CNC3%) exhibited the highest bending test and tensile strength, achieved on coated papers and free-standing polymeric films, respectively. Based on DSC analysis, the thermal characteristics of the PLA matrix were influenced to some extent by the presence of PMMA and m-CNC. Overall, PLA/PMMA blends with an optimal amount of CNC nanofillers offer promising sustainable coatings for the packaging applications. Full article

Ethylene–vinyl acetate (EVA) copolymers are widely used in packaging, films, foams, and adhesives because of their softness and optical clarity; however, their relatively low mechanical strength limits broader applications. In this study, a scalable masterbatch strategy was developed to reinforce EVA by introducing TEMPO-oxidized cellulose nanofibers (T-CNFs), pre-encapsulated within an ethylene–vinyl alcohol (EVOH) matrix. EVOH acted as a compatibilizer, establishing robust hydrogen bonding with T-CNFs (evidenced by a 2.73-fold increase in the hydrogen bonding index) and thereby promoting their uniform dispersion and strong interfacial adhesion in the hydrophobic EVA phase. The resulting nanocomposites demonstrated significant improvements in mechanical performance, achieving a maximum 1.54-fold increase in tensile strength and a 1.42-fold increase in Young’s modulus compared to neat EVA. These findings highlight a practical route to produce bio-based, mechanically enhanced EVA nanocomposites with potential for industrial-scale applications. Full article

This study aimed to develop an environmentally friendly composite film with effective antibacterial and preservation properties. Silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) were green-synthesized using grape skin extract as a natural reducing agent and incorporated into a PVA/chitosan matrix. The composition of the extract and the structural characteristics of the AgNPs were characterized by UPLC-MS and TEM. The barrier, mechanical performance, antibacterial, and fruit preservation properties of the resulting films were systematically evaluated. The results showed that the incorporation of AgNPs significantly improved the water vapor and oxygen barrier properties of the film and imparted excellent broad-spectrum antibacterial activity. In grape storage experiments, films with higher AgNPs content effectively delayed skin aging and moisture loss, maintaining better visual quality of the fruit. This work provides a green and feasible approach for the preparation of nanoparticle-enhanced antibacterial packaging materials based on natural products, with promising application potential. Food loss and waste (FLW) is a chronic problem across food systems worldwide, with meat being one of the most resource-intensive and perishable categories. The perishable character of meat, combined with complex cold chain requirements and consumer behavior, makes the sector particularly sensitive to inefficiencies and loss across all stages from production to consumption. This review synthesizes the latest advancements in new preservation technologies and supply chain efficiency strategies to minimize meat wastage and also outlines current challenges and future directions. New preservation technologies, such as high-pressure processing, cold plasma, pulsed electric fields, and modified atmosphere packaging, have substantial potential to extend shelf life while preserving nutritional and sensory quality. Active and intelligent packaging, bio-preservatives, and nanomaterials act as complementary solutions to enhance safety and quality control. At the same time, blockchain, IoT sensors, AI, and predictive analytics-driven digitalization of the supply chain are opening new opportunities in traceability, demand forecasting, and cold chain management. Nevertheless, regulatory uncertainty, high capital investment requirements, heterogeneity among meat types, and consumer hesitancy towards novel technologies remain significant barriers. Furthermore, the scalability of advanced solutions is limited in emerging nations due to digital inequalities. Convergent approaches that combine technical innovation with policy harmonization, stakeholder capacity building, and consumer education are essential to address these challenges. System-level strategies based on circular economy principles can further reduce meat loss and waste, while enabling by-product valorization and improving climate resilience. By integrating preservation innovations and digital tools within the framework of UN Sustainable Development Goal 12.3, the meat sector can make meaningful progress towards sustainable food systems, improved food safety, and enhanced environmental outcomes. Poly(lactic acid) (PLA) has emerged as a leading bio-based polymer due to its renewability, processability, and biodegradability, yet its broader adoption remains constrained by limitations in thermal stability, mechanical performance, and end-of-life control. This review provides a comparative and application-oriented overview of recent advances in PLA from synthesis and catalyst landscapes to structure–property–biodegradation relationships and practical applications. Representative polymerization routes and catalyst systems are critically compared in terms of achievable molecular weight, stereochemical control, scalability, and sustainability. Key structure–property modification strategies—including stereocomplex formation, blending, and copolymerization—are quantitatively evaluated with respect to thermal and mechanical properties, highlighting inherent trade-offs. Importantly, environment-specific biodegradation behaviors are assessed using representative quantitative metrics under industrial composting, soil, marine, and enzymatic conditions, underscoring the strong dependence of degradation on both material design and testing environment. Finally, application-driven requirements for food packaging, fibers, and agricultural materials are discussed alongside regulatory considerations, processing constraints, and qualitative cost positioning relative to conventional polymers. By integrating recent representative studies into comparative tables and synthesis-driven discussions, this review offers design guidelines for tailoring PLA-based materials toward targeted performance and sustainable deployment. Food packaging is the largest segment of the global plastics market, yet its low degradability and limited performance in preserving perishable goods highlight the need for more sustainable alternatives. This study investigates the use of industrial softwood kraft lignin, a renewable polyol, and γ-valerolactone (GVL), an excellent green lignin solvent, to synthesize bio-based polyurethane (PU) coatings for recycled linerboard. PU was synthesized with hexamethylene diisocyanate (HDI), GVL, and 1,4-diazabicyclo[2.2.2]octane (DABCO) as a catalyst and applied to recycled linerboard (166.6 g/m2) at three coating weights: 13.5, 16.5, and 23.5 g/m2. The coating enhanced water resistance, as shown by the reduced water vapor transmission rate (WVTR) and Cobb1800 values. Oil resistance was also significantly improved, reaching a Kit rating of 11 at the highest coating weight. Mechanical performance was maintained or enhanced, with increases in ring crush strength (RCT) and tensile index. These findings confirm the effectiveness of lignin-based PU in improving both the barrier and mechanical properties of packaging paper. Additionally, this approach presents an environmentally responsible alternative to petroleum-based coatings, adding value to lignin as a byproduct of the pulp and paper industry and supporting the transition toward more circular and sustainable packaging materials. Berries—including strawberries, blueberries, raspberries, blackberries, cranberries, and several less commonly cultivated berry species—are highly valued for their sensory quality and rich content of bioactive compounds, yet they are among the most perishable horticultural products. Their soft texture, high respiration rate, and susceptibility to fungal pathogens lead to rapid postharvest deterioration and significant economic losses. This review synthesizes advances in berry postharvest management reported between 2010 and 2025. Conventional strategies such as rapid precooling, cold-chain optimization, controlled and modified atmospheres, and edible coatings are discussed alongside emerging non-thermal technologies, including UV-C light, ozone, cold plasma, ultrasound, biocontrol agents, and intelligent packaging systems. Particular emphasis is placed on the instability of anthocyanins and other phenolic compounds, microbial spoilage dynamics, and the influence of cultivar genetics and preharvest factors on postharvest performance. The review also highlights opportunities for circular-economy applications, as berry pomace, seeds, and skins represent valuable sources of polyphenols, dietary fiber, and seed oils for use in food, nutraceutical, cosmetic, and bio-based packaging sectors. Looking ahead, future research should prioritize integrated, multi-hurdle, low-residue postharvest strategies, the scale-up of non-thermal technologies, and data-driven cold-chain management. Overall, coordinated physiological, technological, and sustainability-oriented approaches are essential to maintain berry quality, reduce postharvest losses, and strengthen the resilience of berry value chains. Most polymeric plastics used as food packaging are obtained from petroleum or made with non-biodegradable synthetic molecules, which slowly degrade and leach into the environment, resulting in the accumulation of microplastics along the trophic chains. To mitigate these impacts, biodegradable packaging derived from agro-industrial biomass residues has emerged as a promising alternative. In this study, bio-based methylcellulose films reinforced with cellulose nanocrystals (CNCs) extracted from low-quality coffee beans were developed and fully characterized. The extracted CNCs presented a needle-like morphology, with an average height of 7.27 nm and a length of 221.34 nm, with 65.75% crystallinity, were stable at pH 7–8, and presented thermogravimetric mass loss of 8.0%. Methylcellulose films containing 0.6% w/w of CNC were produced by casting and characterized in terms of thermal, mechanical, and optical properties. Notably, the incorporation of CNCs resulted in significantly more flexible and less rigid films, as evidenced by the higher elongation at break (57.90%) and lower Young’s modulus (0.0015 GPa) compared to neat methylcellulose film. The tensile strength was not affected (p > 0.05). Additionally, the MCNC 0.6% films effectively blocked UV light in the 200–300 nm range without compromising transparency. Altogether, these findings underscore the MCNC 0.6% film as a flexible, biodegradable packaging material suitable for food industry application. Full article

The global food industry is undergoing a critical shift toward sustainability, driven by high postharvest losses—reaching up to 40% for fruits and vegetables—and the need to reduce environmental impact. Sustainable postharvest innovations focus on improving quality, extending shelf life, and minimizing waste through eco-efficient technologies. Advances in non-thermal and minimal processing, including ultrasound, pulsed electric fields, and edible coatings, support nutrient preservation and food safety while reducing energy consumption. Although integrated postharvest technologies can reduce deterioration and microbial spoilage by 70–92%, significant challenges remain, including global losses of 20–40% and the high implementation costs of certain nanostructured materials. Simultaneously, eco-friendly packaging solutions based on biodegradable biopolymers and bio-composites are replacing petroleum-based plastics and enabling intelligent systems capable of monitoring freshness and detecting spoilage. Energy-efficient storage, smart sensors, and optimized cold-chain logistics further contribute to product integrity across distribution networks. In parallel, the circular bioeconomy promotes the valorization of agro-food by-products through the recovery of bioactive compounds with antioxidant and anti-inflammatory benefits. Together, these integrated strategies represent a promising pathway toward reducing postharvest losses, supporting food security, and building a resilient, environmentally responsible fresh produce system.
