With the globalized deployment of cross-border vehicle location services and the trajectory data, which contain user identity information and geographically sensitive features, the variability in privacy regulations in different jurisdictions can further exacerbate the technical and compliance challenges of data privacy protection. Traditional static differential privacy mechanisms struggle to accommodate spatiotemporal heterogeneity in dynamic scenarios because of the use of a fixed privacy budget parameter, leading to wasted privacy budgets or insufficient protection of sensitive regions. This study proposes a reinforcement-learning-based dynamic noise optimization method (DNO-RL) that dynamically adjusts the Laplacian noise scale by real-time sensing of vehicle density, region sensitivity, and the remaining privacy budget via a deep Q-network (DQN), with the aim of providing context-adaptive differential privacy protection for cross-border vehicle location services. Simulation experiments of cross-border scenarios based on the T-Drive dataset showed that DNO-RL reduced the average localization error by 28.3% and saved 17.9% of the privacy budget compared with the local differential privacy under the same privacy budget. This study provides a new paradigm for the dynamic privacy–utility balancing of cross-border vehicular networking services. Full article

Determining charge and discharge behavior is essential for optimizing charging strategies and evaluating balancing algorithms in battery energy storage systems and electric vehicles. Conventionally, a sequence of circuit simulations or tedious hardware tests is required to evaluate the performance of the balancing algorithm. To mitigate these problems, this paper proposes a variable capacitor model that can be easily built from the incremental capacity curve. This model provides a direct and insightful R-C time constant method for the charge/discharge time calculation. After validating the model accuracy by experimental results based on the cylindrical lithium-ion cell test, a switched-capacitor active balancing and a passive cell balancing circuit are implemented to further verify the effectiveness of the proposed model in calculating the cell balancing time within 2% error. Target detection is essential in intelligent transportation and autonomous control of unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs), with single-stage detection algorithms used widely due to their speed. However, these algorithms face limitations in detecting small targets, especially in aerial photography from unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs), where small targets are often occluded, multi-scale semantic information is easily lost, and there is a trade-off between real-time processing and computational resources. Existing algorithms struggle to effectively extract multi-dimensional features and deep semantic information from images and to balance detection accuracy with model complexity. To address these limitations, we developed FFG-YOLO, a lightweight small-target detection method for UAVs based on YOLOv8. FFG-YOLO incorporates three modules: a feature enhancement block (FEB), a feature concat block (FCB), and a global context awareness block (GCAB). These modules strengthen feature extraction from small targets, resolve semantic bias in multi-scale feature fusion, and help differentiate small targets from complex backgrounds. We also improved the positioning accuracy of small targets using the Wasserstein distance loss function. Experiments showed that FFG-YOLO outperformed other algorithms, including YOLOv8n, in small-target detection due to its lightweight nature, meeting the stringent real-time performance and deployment requirements of UAVs. With the popularization of electric vehicles and the continuous expansion of the electric vehicle market, the construction and management of charging facilities for electric vehicles have become important issues in research and practice. In some remote areas, the charging stations are idle due to low traffic flow, resulting in a waste of resources. Areas with high traffic flow may have fewer charging stations, resulting in long queues and road congestion. The purpose of this study is to optimize the location of charging stations and the number of charging piles in the stations based on the distribution of traffic flow, and to construct a bi-level programming model by analyzing the distribution of traffic flow. The upper-level planning model is the user-balanced flow allocation model, which is solved to obtain the optimal traffic flow allocation of the road network, and the output of the upper-level planning model is used as the input of the lower-layer model. The lower-level planning model is a generalized minimum cost model with driving time, charging waiting time, charging time, and the cost of electricity consumed to reach the destination of the trip as objective functions. In this study, an empirical simulation is conducted on the road network of Hefei City, Anhui Province, utilizing three algorithms—GA, GWO, and PSO—for optimization and sensitivity analysis. The optimized results are compared with the existing charging station deployment scheme in the road network to demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed methodology. Full article

This paper presents an advanced energy management system (EMS) for optimizing power distribution in a battery/ultracapacitor (UC) hybrid energy storage system (HESS) for electric vehicles (EVs). The proposed EMS accounts for all energy flow scenarios within a practical driving cycle. A regenerative braking control strategy is developed to maximize kinetic energy recovery using an induction motor, efficiently distributing the recovered energy between the UC and battery. Additionally, a power flow management approach is introduced for both motoring (discharge) and braking (charge) operations via bidirectional buck–boost DC-DC converters. In discharge mode, an optimal distribution factor is dynamically adjusted to balance power delivery between the battery and UC, maximizing efficiency. During charging, a DC link voltage control mechanism prioritizes UC charging over the battery, reducing stress and enhancing energy recovery efficiency. The proposed EMS is validated through simulations and experiments, demonstrating significant improvements in vehicle acceleration, energy efficiency, and battery lifespan. Full article

Traffic congestion in large-scale road networks significantly impacts urban sustainability. Traditional traffic signal control methods lack adaptability to dynamic traffic conditions. Recently, deep reinforcement learning (DRL) has emerged as a promising solution for optimizing signal control. This study proposes a Multi-Agent Deep Reinforcement Learning (MADRL) framework for large-scale traffic signal control. The framework employs spatio-temporal attention networks to extract relevant traffic patterns and a hierarchical reinforcement learning strategy for coordinated multi-agent optimization. The problem is formulated as a Markov Decision Process (MDP) with a novel reward function that balances vehicle waiting time, throughput, and fairness. We validate our approach on simulated large-scale traffic scenarios using SUMO (Simulation of Urban Mobility). Experimental results demonstrate that our framework reduces vehicle waiting time by 25% compared to baseline methods while maintaining scalability across different road network sizes. The proposed spatio-temporal multi-agent reinforcement learning framework effectively optimizes large-scale traffic signal control, providing a scalable and efficient solution for smart urban transportation. In intelligent vehicular networks, the accuracy of semantic segmentation in road scenes is crucial for vehicle-mounted artificial intelligence to achieve environmental perception, decision support, and safety control. Although deep learning methods have made significant progress, two main challenges remain: first, the difficulty in balancing global and local features leads to blurred object boundaries and misclassification; second, conventional convolutions have limited ability to perceive irregular objects, causing information loss and affecting segmentation accuracy. To address these issues, this paper proposes a global–local collaborative attention module and a spider web convolution module. The former enhances feature representation through bidirectional feature interaction and dynamic weight allocation, reducing false positives and missed detections. The latter introduces an asymmetric sampling topology and six-directional receptive field paths to effectively improve the recognition of irregular objects. Experiments on the Cityscapes, CamVid, and BDD100K datasets, collected using vehicle-mounted cameras, demonstrate that the proposed method performs excellently across multiple evaluation metrics, including mIoU, mRecall, mPrecision, and mAccuracy. Comparative experiments with classical segmentation networks, attention mechanisms, and convolution modules validate the effectiveness of the proposed approach. The proposed method demonstrates outstanding performance in sensor-based semantic segmentation tasks and is well-suited for environmental perception systems in autonomous driving. Full article

Intelligent driving technology is expected to reshape urban transportation, but its promotion is hindered by user acceptance challenges and diverse technical routes. This study proposes a comprehensive user acceptance evaluation framework for intelligent driving from the perspective of value engineering (VE). The novelty of this framework lies in three aspects: (1) It unifies behavioral theory and utility theory under the value engineering framework, and it extracts key indicators such as safety, travel efficiency, trust, comfort, and cost, thus addressing the issue of the lack of integration between subjective and objective factors in previous studies. (2) It establishes a systematic mapping mechanism from technical solutions to evaluation indicators, filling the gap of insufficient targeting at different technical routes in the existing literature. (3) It quantifies acceptance differences via VE’s core formula of V = F/C, overcoming the ambiguity of non-technical evaluation in prior research. A case study comparing single-vehicle intelligence vs. collaborative intelligence and different sensor combinations (vision-only, map fusion, and lidar fusion) shows that collaborative intelligence and vision-based solutions offer higher comprehensive acceptance due to balanced functionality and cost. This framework guides enterprises in technical strategy planning and assists governments in formulating industrial policies by quantifying acceptance differences across technical routes. Full article

Flexible energy sources such as electric vehicles and the battery energy storage systems of intelligent distribution systems can provide system-wide auxiliary services such as frequency regulation for power systems. This paper proposes an optimal method for operating the local energy community that is based on two-stage scheduling. Firstly, the basic concepts of the local energy community and flexible service are introduced in detail. Taking LEC as the reserve unit of artificial frequency recovery, an energy information interaction model among LEC, balance service providers, and the power grid is established. Then, a two-stage scheduling framework is proposed to ensure the rationality and economy of community energy scheduling. In the first stage, day-ahead scheduling uses the energy community management center to predict the up/down flexibility capacity that LEC can provide by adjusting the BESS control parameters. In the second stage, real-time scheduling aims at maximizing community profits and scheduling LEC based on the allocation and activation of standby flexibility determined in real time. Finally, the correctness of the two-stage scheduling framework is verified through a case study. The results show that the control parameters used in the day-ahead stage can significantly affect the real-time profitability of LEC, and that LEC benefits more in the case of low BESS utilization than in the case of high BESS utilization and non-participation in frequency recovery reserve. The Kuroshio Current’s flow velocity imposes exacting requirements on underwater vehicle propulsive systems. Ecological preservation necessitates low-noise propeller designs to mitigate operational disturbances. As technological evolution advances toward greater intelligence and system integration, intelligent unmanned systems are positioning themselves as a critical frontier in marine innovation. In recent years, the global research community has increased its efforts towards the development of high-maneuverability underwater vehicles. However, propeller design optimization ignores the key balance between acoustic performance and hydrodynamic efficiency, as well as the appropriate speed threshold for blade rotation. In order to solve this problem, the propeller design of the NACA 65A010 airfoil is optimized by using OpenProp v3.3.4 and XFlow 2022 software, aiming at innovating the propulsion system of shallow water agile submersibles. The study presents an integrated design framework combining lattice Boltzmann method (LBM) simulations synergized with fully Lagrangian-LES modeling, implementing rotational speed thresholds to detect cavitation inception, followed by advanced acoustic propagation analysis. Through rigorous comparative assessment of hydrodynamic metrics, we establish an optimization protocol for propeller selection tailored to littoral zone operational demands. Studies have shown that increasing the number of propeller blades can reduce the single-blade load and delay cavitation, but too many blades will aggravate the complexity of the flow field, resulting in reduced efficiency and noise rebound. It is concluded that the propeller with five blades, a diameter of 234 mm, and a speed of 500 RPM exhibits the best performance. Under these conditions, the water efficiency is 69.01%, and the noise is the lowest, which basically realizes the balance between hydrodynamic efficiency and acoustic performance. This paradigm-shifting research carries substantial implications for next-generation marine vehicles, particularly in optimizing operational stealth and energy efficiency through intelligent propulsion architecture. This study aims to develop an optimal underwriting strategy for affordable (H1 and M1) and premium (L1 and M2) electric vehicles (EVs), balancing financial risk and sustainability commitments. The research is motivated by regulatory pressures, risk management needs, and sustainability goals, necessitating an adaptation of traditional underwriting models. The study employs a modified Delphi method with industry experts to identify key risk factors, including accident risk, repair costs, battery safety, driver behavior, and PCAF carbon impact. A sensitivity analysis was conducted to examine premium adjustments under different risk scenarios, categorizing EVs into four risk segments: Low-Risk, Low-Carbon (L1); Medium-Risk, Low-Carbon (M1); Medium-Risk, High-Carbon (M2); and High-Risk, High-Carbon (H1). Findings indicate that premium EVs (L1 and M2) exhibit lower volatility in underwriting costs, benefiting from advanced safety features, lower accident rates, and reduced carbon attribution penalties. Conversely, budget EVs (H1 and M1) experience higher premium fluctuations due to greater accident risks, costly repairs, and higher carbon costs under PCAF implementation. The worst-case scenario showed a 14.5% premium increase, while the best-case scenario led to a 10.5% premium reduction. The study recommends prioritizing premium EVs for insurance coverage due to their lower underwriting risks and carbon efficiency. For budget EVs, insurers should implement selective underwriting based on safety features, driver risk profiling, and energy efficiency. Additionally, incentive-based pricing such as telematics discounts, green repair incentives, and low-carbon charging rewards can mitigate financial risks and align with net-zero insurance commitments. This research provides a structured framework for insurers to optimize EV underwriting while ensuring long-term profitability and regulatory compliance. Full article

Magnetic gears (MGs) are attracting increasing attention in power transmission systems due to their contactless operation principles, low frictional losses, and high efficiency. However, the broad application potential of these technologies requires a comprehensive evaluation of engineering parameters, such as material selection, energy efficiency, and structural design. This review focuses solely on solid-core magnetic gear systems designed using laminated electrical steels, soft magnetic composites (SMCs), and high-saturation alloys. This review systematically examines the topological diversity, torque transmission principles, and the impact of various core materials, such as electrical steels, soft magnetic composites (SMCs), and cobalt-based alloys, on the performance of magnetic gear systems. Literature-based comparative analyses are structured around topological classifications, evaluation of material properties, and performance analyses based on losses. Additionally, the study highlights that aligning material properties with appropriate manufacturing methods, such as powder metallurgy, wire electrical discharge machining (EDM), and precision casting, is essential for the practical scalability of magnetic gear systems. The findings reveal that coaxial magnetic gears (CMGs) offer a favorable balance between high torque density and compactness, while soft magnetic composites provide significant advantages in loss reduction, particularly at high frequencies. Additionally, application trends in fields such as renewable energy, electric vehicles (EVs), aerospace, and robotics are highlighted. Full article

Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs) face significant challenges in global path planning within complex terrains, as traditional algorithms (e.g., A*, PSO, APF) struggle to balance computational efficiency, path optimality, and safety. This study proposes a Voronoi–A* fusion algorithm, combining Voronoi-vertex-based rapid trajectory generation with A* supplementary expansion for enhanced performance. First, an adaptive DEM layering strategy divides the terrain into horizontal planes based on obstacle density, reducing computational complexity while preserving 3D flexibility. The Voronoi vertices within each layer serve as a sparse waypoint network, with greedy heuristic prioritizing vertices that ensure safety margins, directional coherence, and goal proximity. For unresolved segments, A* performs localized searches to ensure complete connectivity. Finally, a line-segment interpolation search further optimizes the path to minimize both length and turning maneuvers. Simulations in mountainous environments demonstrate superior performance over traditional methods in terms of path planning success rates, path optimality, and computation. Our framework excels in real-time scenarios, such as disaster rescue and logistics, although it assumes static environments and trades slight path elongation for robustness. Future research should integrate dynamic obstacle avoidance and weather impact analysis to enhance adaptability in real-world conditions. Full article

The maritime sector’s transition to sustainable energy is critical for achieving global carbon neutrality, with container terminals representing a key focus due to their high energy consumption and emissions. This study explores the potential of hydrogen energy as a decarbonization solution for port operations, using the Chuanshan Port Area of Ningbo Zhoushan Port (CPANZP) as a case study. Through a comprehensive analysis of hydrogen production, storage, refueling, and consumption technologies, we demonstrate the feasibility and benefits of integrating hydrogen systems into port infrastructure. Our findings highlight the successful deployment of a hybrid “wind-solar-hydrogen-storage” energy system at CPANZP, which achieves 49.67% renewable energy contribution and an annual reduction of 22,000 tons in carbon emissions. Key advancements include alkaline water electrolysis with 64.48% efficiency, multi-tier hydrogen storage systems, and fuel cell applications for vehicles and power generation. Despite these achievements, challenges such as high production costs, infrastructure scalability, and data integration gaps persist. The study underscores the importance of policy support, technological innovation, and international collaboration to overcome these barriers and accelerate the adoption of hydrogen energy in ports worldwide. A Safety-Based Approach for the Design of an Innovative Microvehicle

The growing popularity of Personal Light Electric Vehicles (PLEVs), such as e-scooters, has revolutionized urban mobility by offering compact, cost-effective, and environmentally friendly transportation solutions. However, safety concerns, including inadequate infrastructure, poor protective measures, and high accident rates, remain critical challenges. This paper presents the design and development of an innovative self-balancing microvehicle under the H2020 LEONARDO project, which aims to address these challenges through advanced engineering and user-centric design. The vehicle combines features of monowheels and e-scooters, integrating cutting-edge technologies to enhance safety, stability, and usability. The design adheres to European regulations, including Germany’s eKFV standards, and incorporates user preferences identified through representative online surveys of 1500 PLEV users. These preferences include improved handling on uneven surfaces, enhanced signaling capabilities, and reduced instability during maneuvers. The prototype features a lightweight composite structure reinforced with carbon fibers, a high-torque motorized front wheel, and multiple speed modes tailored to different conditions, such as travel in pedestrian areas, use by novice riders, and advanced users. Braking tests demonstrate deceleration values of up to 3.5 m/s2, comparable to PLEV market standards and exceeding regulatory minimums, while smooth acceleration ramps ensure rider stability and safety. Additional features, such as identification plates and weight-dependent motor control, enhance compliance with local traffic rules and prevent misuse. The vehicle’s design also addresses common safety concerns, such as curb navigation and signaling, by incorporating large-diameter wheels, increased ground clearance, and electrically operated direction indicators. Future upgrades include the addition of a second rear wheel for enhanced stability, skateboard-like rear axle modifications for improved maneuverability, and hybrid supercapacitors to minimize fire risks and extend battery life. With its focus on safety, regulatory compliance, and rider-friendly innovations, this microvehicle represents a significant advancement in promoting safe and sustainable urban mobility. Full article
