This research aimed to evaluate the impact of using brick waste powder (BWP) and varying lengths of polyester fibers (PFs) on the performance properties of asphalt concrete (AC) mixtures. BWP was utilized as a replacement for traditional limestone powder (LS) filler, while PFs of three lengths (3 mm, 8 mm, and 15 mm) were introduced. The study employed the response surface methodology (RSM) for experimental design and analysis of variance (ANOVA) to identify the influence of BWP and PF on the selected performance indicators. These indicators included bulk density, air voids, voids in the mineral aggregate, voids filled with asphalt, Marshall stability, Marshall flow, Marshall quotient, indirect tensile strength, wet tensile strength, and the tensile strength ratio. The findings demonstrated that BWP improved moisture resistance and the mechanical performance of AC mixes. Moreover, incorporating PF alongside BWP further enhanced these properties, resulting in superior overall performance. Using multi-objective optimization through RSM-based empirical models, the study identified the optimal PF length of 5 mm in combination with BWP for achieving the best AC properties. Validation experiments confirmed the accuracy of the predicted results, with an error margin of less than 8%. The study emphasizes the intriguing prospect of BWP and PF as sustainable alternatives for improving the durability, mechanical characteristics, and cost-efficiency of asphalt pavements. Full article

The increasing demand for sustainable practices in road construction has prompted the search for environmentally friendly and cost-effective materials. This study explores the incorporation of reclaimed asphalt pavement (RAP) and Panasqueira mine waste (greywacke aggregates) as full replacements for virgin aggregates in hot mix asphalt (HMA), aligning with the objectives of UN Sustainable Development Goal 9. Three asphalt mixtures were prepared: a reference mixture (MR) with granite aggregates, and two modified mixtures (M15 and M20) with 15% and 20% RAP, respectively. All mixtures were evaluated through Marshall stability, stiffness modulus, water sensitivity, and wheel tracking tests. The results demonstrated that mixtures containing RAP and mine waste met Portuguese specifications for surface courses. Specifically, the M20 mixture showed the highest stiffness modulus, improved moisture resistance, and the best performance against permanent deformation. These improvements are attributed to the presence of stiff aged binder in RAP and the mechanical characteristics of the greywacke aggregates. Overall, the findings confirm that the combined use of RAP and mining waste provides a technically viable and sustainable alternative for asphalt pavement construction, contributing to resource efficiency and circular economy goals. Effective management and handling of construction and demolition waste (CDW) can yield significant technical and environmental benefits for road pavement construction. This article aims to provide a comprehensive and up-to-date chronological review of studies on the mechanical performance of asphalt mixtures—primarily hot mix asphalt (HMA)—incorporating recycled concrete aggregate (RCA). Since the main limitation of RCA is the presence of residual adhered mortar, the review also includes studies that applied various surface treatments (mechanical, chemical, and thermal, among others) to enhance mixture performance. The article summarizes the experimental procedures used and highlights the key findings and conclusions of the reviewed research. Although the results are varied and sometimes contradictory—mainly due to the source variability and heterogeneity of RCA—the use of these materials is technically viable. Moreover, their application can provide environmental, social, and economic advantages, particularly in the construction of low-traffic roadways. Finally, the article identifies research gaps and offers recommendations for future researches. Full article

This paper presents a comprehensive review of the environmentally friendly management and reutilization of electronic waste (e-waste) plastics in flexible pavement construction. The discussion begins with an overview of e-waste management challenges and outlines key recycling approaches for converting plastic waste into asphalt-compatible materials. This review then discusses the types of e-waste plastics used for asphalt modification, their incorporation methods, and compatibility challenges. Physical and chemical treatment techniques, including the use of free radical initiators, are then explored for improving dispersion and performance. Additionally, in situations where advanced pretreatment methods are not applicable due to cost, safety, or technical constraints, the application of alternative approaches, such as the use of low-cost complementary additives, is discussed as a practical solution to enhance compatibility and performance. Finally, the influence of e-waste plastics on the conventional and rheological properties of asphalt binders, as well as the performance of asphalt mixtures, is also evaluated. Findings indicate that e-waste plastics, when combined with appropriate pretreatment methods and complementary additives, can enhance workability, cold-weather cracking resistance, high-temperature anti-rutting performance, and resistance against moisture-induced damage while also offering environmental and economic benefits. This review highlights the potential of e-waste plastics as sustainable asphalt modifiers and provides insights across the full utilization pathway, from recovery to in-field performance. This paper presents a critical and comprehensive review of the application of mining waste, specifically waste rock and tailings, in asphalt pavements, with the aim of synthesizing performance outcomes and identifying key research gaps. A systematic literature search yielded a final dataset of 41 peer-reviewed articles for detailed analysis. Bibliometric analysis indicates a notable upward trend in annual publications, reflecting growing academic and practical interest in this field. Performance-based evaluations demonstrate that mining wastes, particularly iron and copper tailings, have the potential to enhance the high-temperature performance (i.e., rutting resistance) of asphalt binders and mixtures when utilized as fillers or aggregates. However, their effects on fatigue life, low-temperature cracking, and moisture susceptibility are inconsistent, largely influenced by the physicochemical properties and dosage of the specific waste material. Despite promising results, critical knowledge gaps remain, particularly in relation to long-term durability, comprehensive environmental and economic Life-Cycle Assessments (LCA), and the inherent variability of waste materials. This review underscores the substantial potential of mining wastes as sustainable alternatives to conventional pavement materials, while emphasizing the need for further multidisciplinary research to support their broader implementation. Current asphalt pavement structural design methods often lack a strong quantitative link to materials’ mixtures and mechanical properties and typically ignore the significant tensile–compressive disparities of materials, resulting in notable analysis errors. This study employed the dual-modulus theory to numerically analyze flexible base asphalt pavements under varied configurations, revealing how critical structural responses and fatigue life evolve. This examination also determined optimal layer mixes through mechanical parameter modeling for integrated material–structure design. The results showed that fundamental responses and fatigue life vary nonlinearly with thickness and modulus. The effect of modulus outweighed that of thickness, with the effects of the tensile modulus being more pronounced than compressive ones, and surface transverse strain being most sensitive to both. The recommended compressive–tensile modulus ratios were about 1.5, 2.0, and 1.2 for upper, lower, and base layers, respectively. By using this integrated design method, the optimized pavement structures achieved superior stress distribution, significantly extending the base service life. As a result, more realistic design lifetimes were obtained. Full article

To prolong the service life of asphalt pavement and reduce its maintenance cost, a fiber Bragg grating (FBG) sensor encapsulated in carboxylated carbon nanotube (CNT-COOH)-modified gel material suitable for strain monitoring of asphalt pavement was developed. Through tensile and bending tests, the effects of carboxylated carbon nanotubes on the mechanical properties of gel materials under different dosages were evaluated and the optimal dosage of carbon nanotubes was determined. Infrared spectrometer and scanning electron microscopy were used to compare and analyze the infrared spectra and microstructure of carbon nanotubes before and after carboxyl functionalization and modified gel materials. The results show that the incorporation of CNTs-COOH increased the tensile strength, elongation at break, and tensile modulus of the gel material by 36.2%, 47%, and 17.2%, respectively, and increased the flexural strength, flexural modulus, and flexural strain by 89.7%, 7.5%, and 63.8%, respectively. Through infrared spectrum analysis, it was determined that carboxyl (COOH) and hydroxyl (OH) were successfully introduced on the surface of carbon nanotubes. By analyzing the microstructure, it can be seen that the carboxyl functionalization of CNTs improved the agglomeration of carbon nanotubes. The tensile section of the modified gel material is rougher than that of the pure epoxy resin, showing obvious plastic deformation, and the toughness is improved. According to the data from the calibration experiment, the strain and temperature sensitivity coefficients of the packaged sensor are 1.9864 pm/μm and 0.0383 nm/°C, respectively, which are 1.63 times and 3.61 times higher than those of the bare fiber grating. The results of an applicability study show that the internal structure strain of asphalt rutting specimen changed linearly with the external static load, and the fitting sensitivity is 0.0286 με/N. Combined with ANSYS finite element analysis, it is verified that the simulation analysis results are close to the measured data, which verifies the effectiveness and monitoring accuracy of the sensor. The dynamic load test results reflect the internal strain change trend of asphalt mixture under external rutting load, confirming that the encapsulated FBG sensor is suitable for the long-term monitoring of asphalt pavement strain. Limited recovery of the viscoelastic properties of aged asphalt on RAP surfaces at ambient temperature reduces interface fusion and bonding with new emulsified asphalt, degrading pavement performance and limiting large-scale promotion and high-value applications of the emulsified asphalt cold recycled mixture (EACRM). Therefore, a cold regenerant was independently prepared to rapidly penetrate, soften, and activate aged asphalt at ambient temperature in this paper, and its effects on the volumetric composition, mechanical strength, and pavement performance of EACRM were systematically investigated. The results showed that as the cold regenerant content increased, the air voids, indirect tensile strength (ITS), and high-temperature deformation resistance of EACRM decreased, while the dry–wet ITS ratio, cracking resistance, and fatigue resistance increased. Considering the comprehensive pavement performance requirements of cold recycled pavements, the optimal content of the activated cold regenerant for EACRM was determined to be approximately 0.6%. Compared to traditional dense asphalt concrete mixtures, stone mastic asphalt (SMA) generally offers superior performance in terms of its mechanical resistance and extended pavement lifespan. Focusing on the Norwegian scenario, this laboratory-based study investigated the durability of SMA considering the influence of the aggregate shape and petrography. The rock aggregates were classified according to three different-shaped refinement stages involving vertical shaft impact crushing. Further, the aggregates were sourced from three distinct locations (Jelsa, Tau and Dirdal) characterized by different petrographic origins: granodiorite, quartz diorite and granite, respectively. Two mixtures with maximum aggregate sizes of 16 mm (SMA 16) and 11 mm (SMA 11) were designed according to Norwegian standards and investigated in terms of their durability performance. In this regard, two main functional tests were performed for the asphalt mixture, namely resistance against permanent deformation and abrasion by studded tyres, and one for the asphalt mortar, namely water sensitivity. Overall, the best test results were related to the aggregates sourced from Jelsa and Tau, thus highlighting that the geological origin exerts a major impact on SMA’s durability performance. On the other hand, the different aggregate shapes related to the crushing refinement treatments seem to play an effective but secondary role. Full article

Fiber Bragg grating (FBG) exhibits strong resistance to electromagnetic interference and excellent linear strain response, making it highly promising for structural health monitoring (SHM) in pavement. This research investigates the strain transfer characteristics of embedded FBG in pavement structure and materials by using the relevant theoretical models. Results indicate adhesive layer thickness and sheath modulus are the primary factors influencing the strain transfer coefficient. A thinner adhesive layer and high modulus of sheath enhance the coefficient. Additionally, the strain distribution of sheath significantly affects the transfer efficiency. When the stress level near the grating region is lower than the both ends, the coefficient increases and even exceeds 1, which typically occurs under multi-axle conditions. As for asphalt mixture, high temperature leads to lower efficiency, while accumulated plastic strain improves it. Although the increased load frequency results a higher strain transfer coefficient, the magnitude of this change is negligible. By employing polynomial fitting to the sheath strain distribution, the boundary condition of theoretical equation could be removed. The theoretical and numerical results of strain transfer coefficient for pavement embedded FBG demonstrate good consistency, indicating the polynomial fitting is adoptable for the theoretical calculation with non-uniform strain distribution. This study utilizes the FEM to clarify the evolution of FBG strain transfer in pavement structures and materials, providing a theoretical basis for the design and implementation of embedded FBG in pavement. Asphalt pavement cracking is an important factor affecting its service life. Under certain conditions, the self-healing behavior of asphalt itself can repair pavement cracks. However, the self-healing ability of asphalt itself is limited. In order to strengthen the self-healing ability of asphalt, the microcapsule wrapped with a repair agent is pre-mixed into the asphalt mixture. When the crack occurs and spreads to the surface of the microcapsule, the microcapsule ruptures and the healing agent flows out to realize the self-healing of the crack. Current microcapsules are mostly prepared with healing agents and bio-oil as core materials, and their high-temperature resistance to rutting is poor. While the epoxy resin contains a three-membered cyclic ether, it can undergo ring-opening polymerization to bond and repair the asphalt matrix. In addition, research on microcapsules mainly focuses on the self-healing properties of microcapsule-modified asphalt. In fact, before adding microcapsules to asphalt to improve its self-healing performance, it is necessary to ensure that the asphalt has a good road performance. On this basis, the self-healing performance of asphalt is improved, thereby extending the service life of asphalt pavement. Therefore, two-component epoxy self-healing microcapsules (E-mic and G-mic) were first prepared in this paper. Then, a temperature scanning test, rheological test of bending beams, and linear amplitude scanning test were, respectively, conducted for the microcapsule/asphalt to evaluate its road performance, including the high-temperature performance, low-temperature crack resistance, and fatigue performance. Finally, the self-healing performance of microcapsules/asphalt was tested. The results showed that the self-developed epoxy self-healing microcapsules were well encapsulated and presented as spherical micron-sized particles. The average particle size of the E-mic was approximately 23.582 μm, while the average particle size of the G-mic was approximately 22.440 μm, exhibiting a good normal distribution. In addition, they can remain intact and unbroken under high-temperature conditions. The results of road performance tests indicated that the microcapsule/asphalt mixture exhibits an excellent high-temperature resistance to permanent deformation, low-temperature crack resistance, and fatigue resistance. The self-healing test demonstrated that the microcapsule/asphalt exhibited an excellent self-healing performance. When the microcapsule content was 4%, the self-healing rate reached its optimal level of 67.8%, which was 149.2% higher than that of the base asphalt. Full article

With the deepening of the green and low-carbon concept in the field of road engineering, the cold construction asphalt pavement technology has developed rapidly due to its advantages such as low energy consumption, low pollution, and convenient construction. The adhesion between emulsified asphalt and aggregates, as a core factor affecting the performance of cold-mixed mixtures and the lifespan of the pavement, has attracted much attention in terms of its mechanism of action and evaluation methods. However, at present, there are still many issues that need to be addressed in terms of the stability control of adhesion between emulsified asphalt and aggregates, the explanation of the microscopic mechanism, and the standardization of testing methods in complex environments. These problems restrict the further promotion and application of the cold construction technology. Based on this, this paper systematically analyzes the current development status, application scenarios, and future trends of the theory and testing methods of the adhesion between emulsified asphalt and aggregates by reviewing a large number of relevant studies. The research aims to provide theoretical support and practical references for the improvement of adhesion in the cold construction asphalt pavement technology. Research shows that in terms of the adhesion mechanism, the existing results have deeply analyzed the infiltration and demulsification adhesion process of emulsified asphalt on the surface of aggregates and clarified the key links of physical and chemical interactions, but the understanding of the microscopic interface behavior and molecular-scale mechanism is still insufficient. In terms of testing methods, although objective and subjective evaluation methods such as mechanical tensile tests, surface energy evaluation, and adhesion fatigue tests have been developed, the standardization of testing, data comparability, and practical engineering applicability still need to be optimized. Comprehensive analysis shows that the research on the adhesion between emulsified asphalt and aggregates is showing a trend from macroscopic to microscopic, from static to dynamic. There are challenges in predicting and controlling the adhesion performance under complex environments, as well as important opportunities for developing advanced characterization techniques and multiscale simulation methods. In order to investigate the influence of graphene/rubber powder compound modified asphalt on the low-temperature cracking resistance of drainage asphalt mixtures, graphene/rubber powder compound modified asphalt mixtures were prepared using graphene/rubber powder compound modified asphalt for drainage asphalt mixtures, and compared with SBS-modified asphalt and rubber powder-modified asphalt, and the low-temperature cracking resistance of graphene/rubber powder compound modification asphalt mixtures was investigated through the Marshall Stability Test, Semi-circular Bending Test (SCB), and Freeze–Thaw Split Test. Research was carried out. At the same time, a scanning electric microscope (SEM) was adopted to analyze the micro-mechanism of the graphene/rubber powder compound modified asphalt mixtures under the microscopic condition. The findings showed that graphene dispersed the aggregation of rubber powder effectively in the microscopic state and improved the stability of the composite modified asphalt. The addition of graphene improved the fracture energy of rubber powder composite modified asphalt by 15.68% under the condition of −15 °C to 0 °C, which effectively slowed down the decrease of fracture energy; at −15 °C and −10 °C, the largest stresses were improved by 7.50% and 26.71%, respectively, compared to the drainage asphalt mixtures prepared as rubber powder-modified asphalt and SBS-modified asphalt. After a freeze–thaw cycle, the maximum stress decrease of graphene/rubber powder compound modified asphalt was 21.51% and 10.37% at −15 °C and 0 °C, respectively. When compared to rubber powder-modified asphalt, graphene/rubber powder compound modified asphalt significantly improved the low-intensity cracking resistance of drainage asphalt mixtures at low temperatures, slowed down the decrease of the maximum stress, and its low-temperature cracking resistance was more stable. Semi-flexible pavement (SFP) is a durable and cost-effective alternative to conventional rigid and flexible pavement and is formed by permeating an open-graded asphalt (OGA) layer with high-fluidity cement grout. The degradation of SFP mattresses due to fuel oil spills can result in significant maintenance costs. Incorporating glass waste (GW) into the construction of SFPs offers an eco-friendly solution, helping to reduce repair costs and environmental impact by conserving natural resources and minimizing landfill waste. The main objective of this research is to investigate the mechanical performance and fuel oil resistance of SFP composites containing different levels of glass aggregate (GlaSFlex composites). Fine glass aggregate (FGA) was replaced with fine virgin aggregate at levels of 0%, 20%, 40%, 60%, 80%, and 100% by mass. The results indicated the feasibility of utilizing FGA as a total replacement (100%) for fine aggregate in the OGA structural layer of SFPs. At 100% FGA, the composite exhibited excellent mechanical performance and durability, including a compressive strength of 8.93 MPa, a Marshall stability exceeding 38 kN, and a stiffness modulus of 19,091 MPa. Furthermore, the composite demonstrated minimal permanent deformation (0.04 mm), a high residual stability of 94.7%, a residual compressive strength of 83.3%, and strong resistance to fuel spillage with a mass loss rate of less than 1%, indicating excellent durability. Micromechanical Finite Element Model Investigation of Cracking Behavior and Construction-Related Deficiencies in Asphalt Mixtures

This study investigated the fracture behavior of asphalt mixtures under indirect tensile loading by comparing the performance of homogenized and micromechanical finite element (FEMs) models based on the cohesive zone model (CZM). Five asphalt mixture types were tested experimentally, and both models were calibrated and validated using load–displacement curves from indirect tensile tests (IDTs). The micromechanical model, incorporating random aggregate generation and three-phase material definition, exhibited significantly higher predictive accuracy (R2 = 0.86–0.98) than the homogenized model (R2 = 0.66–0.77). The validated micromechanical model was further applied to quantify the impact of construction-related deficiencies—namely, increased air voids, non-continuous gradation, and aggregate segregation. The simulation results showed that higher void content (from 4% to 10%) reduced peak load by up to 35% and increased localized stress concentrations by up to 40%. Discontinuous gradation and uneven aggregate distribution also led to premature crack initiation and more complex fracture paths. These findings demonstrated the value of micromechanical modeling for evaluating sensitivity to mix design and compaction quality, providing a foundation for performance-based asphalt mixture optimization and durability improvement.
