Cardioprotective and Antihypertensive Effects of Topical Capsaicin in a Rat Model

TRPV1 regulates neuronal and vascular function mediated by NO and CGRP. Systemic arterial hypertension (SAH) induces an imbalance in vascular mediators NO and CGRP by altering the transport of Ca2+ ions through TRPV1, generating cellular damage. We studied the effect of topical capsaicin (CS) treatment on cardiac mechanical work, oxidative stress (TAC, NO, BH4, and BH2), cellular damage (MDA, MTO, and 8HO2dG), and inflammation (IL-6 and TNFα), generated by SAH, which was induced by L-NAME, in male Wistar rats. CS was added to a moisturizing cream and applied to the abdomen of animals for two weeks. Experimental groups were as follows: (1) Control, (2) Control+Cream, (3) Hypertensive, and (4) Hypertensive+Cream. Hearts were exposed to ischemia-reperfusion (I-R) using the Langendorff technique to study the potential cardioprotection of CS. Expression of SOD1, SOD2, catalase, eNOS, pNOS, TRPV1, and CGRP in cardiac tissue was evaluated. In the Hypertensive group, TRPV1 activation by CS (Hypertensive+Cream) reduced oxidative stress (OS), decreasing cellular damage and inflammation and increasing TAC, modulating biochemical and tissue alterations induced by OS generated by SAH. In parallel, an increase in tissue levels and the expression of CGRP, TRPV1, and eNOS, induced by CS, was observed. These findings indicate that pretreatment with CS attenuates cardiac I-R and SAH injury in rats. The cardioprotective mechanism may be based on TRPV1-mediated CGRP overexpression. Full article

Weeksella virosa (W. virosa) is a rare, non-saccharolytic Gram-negative bacterium initially described in the 1970s, later proposed as a distinct genus in 1986. The genus Weeksella currently contains two species, namely W. virosa and W. massiliensis. Although primarily considered non-pathogenic, recent evidence has linked W. virosa to a limited number of clinical infections, mostly in immunocompromised patients. This review aims to consolidate the current body of knowledge on W. virosa, encompassing its microbiological and biochemical characteristics, involvement in human and animal infections, antimicrobial susceptibility profiles, and a critical evaluation of existing diagnostic methodologies. This review includes 13 case reports detailing 16 human cases retrieved from multiple databases, highlighting diagnostic inconsistencies and a lack of standardized antimicrobial susceptibility testing. Although W. virosa is generally susceptible to most antibiotics with the exception of aminoglycosides, recent reports seem to suggest a possible emerging resistance trend. The presence of this organism in hospital environments raises concerns about its potential transmission within healthcare settings. While biochemical testing appears to offer reasonably accurate identification of W. virosa, molecular confirmation may be warranted in some cases mainly due to the organism’s rarity. The reliability of MALDI-TOF MS for the identification of W. virosa remains currently uncertain. Further studies, including electron microscopy and genome-wide analysis, are urgently needed to clarify the pathogenic potential of this bacterium and guide clinical management. This review underscores the necessity for awareness among clinicians and microbiologists regarding this underrecognized pathogen. Full article

The present study explores the use of Instagram as an innovative strategy in the teaching–learning process in the context of animal reproduction topics. In the current era, with digital technology and social media transforming how information is accessed and consumed, it is essential for teachers to adapt and harness the potential of these tools for educational purposes. This article delves into the need for teachers to stay updated with current trends and the importance of promoting digital competences among teachers. This research aims to provide insights into the benefits of integrating social media into the educational landscape. Students of Veterinary Science degrees, Master’s degrees in Equine Sport Medicine as well as vocational education and training (VET) were involved in this study. An Instagram account named “UCOREPRO” was created for educational use, and it was openly available to all users. Instagram usage metrics were consistently tracked. A voluntary survey comprising 35 questions was conducted to collect feedback regarding the educational use of smartphone technology, social media habits and the UCOREPRO Instagram account. The integration of Instagram as an educational tool was positively received by veterinary students. Survey data revealed that 92.3% of respondents found the content engaging, with 79.5% reporting improved understanding of the subject and 71.8% acquiring new knowledge. Students suggested improvements such as more frequent posting and inclusion of academic incentives. Concerns about privacy and digital distraction were present but did not outweigh the perceived benefits. The use of short videos and microlearning strategies proved particularly effective in capturing students’ attention. Overall, Instagram was found to be a promising platform to enhance motivation, engagement, and informal learning in veterinary education, provided that thoughtful integration and clear educational objectives are maintained. In general, students expressed positive opinions about the initiative, and suggested some ways in which it could be improved as an educational tool. Full article

Amdoparvoviruses, encompassing the well-characterized Aleutian mink disease viruses (AMDV) as well as less investigated viruses infecting both captive and wild animals, are important carnivoran viruses that are significant pathogens in the mink farming industry. We investigated the molecular epidemiology of amdoparvoviruses among Danish wildlife. Spleen samples from 118 animals of seven carnivoran species were screened with a pan-amdoparvovirus PCR, and the identified viruses were molecularly characterized. In one of five European badgers (Meles meles), we identified an AMDV-3 strain whose ancestors were likely of farmed mink origin. This virus was last reported on a mink farm in 2002, demonstrating how farm-derived viruses have established themselves among wildlife. We also discovered and fully characterized a novel virus found in five of 81 (6.2%) foxes (Vulpes vulpes) and one of five badgers (20.0%), which we named fox and badger amdoparvovirus 1 (FBAV-1). FBAV-1 fulfills the criteria for classification as a novel species and phylogenetically is positioned as an intermediate between the North American and Eurasian amdoparvoviral clades. This study provides baseline data and expands our understanding of amdoparvoviral ecology. Further studies including more animals across diverse geographic areas are warranted to clarify amdoparvovirus epidemiology, spread, cross-species transmission, epidemic potential, and evolutionary paths. The snakes from the genus Bothrops are responsible for most of the ophidic accidents in Brazil, and Bothrops atrox represents one of these species. Envenomation by these snakes results in systemic effects and is often associated with early mortality following snakebite incidents. The present study investigates the pharmacological properties of Bothrops atrox venom (VBA), focusing specifically on its impact on renal blood flow. Following the renal perfusion procedure, kidney tissues were processed for histopathological examination. Statistical analysis of all evaluated parameters was conducted using ANOVA and Student’s t-test, with significance set at p < 0.005. Administration of VBA resulted in a marked reduction in both perfusion pressure and renal vascular resistance. In contrast, there was a significant elevation in urinary output and glomerular filtration rate. Histological changes observed in the perfused kidneys were mild. The involvement of nitric oxide in the pressor effects of Bothrops atrox venom was not investigated in renal perfusion systems or in in vivo models. Treatment with VBA led to elevated nitrite levels in the bloodstream of the experimental animals. This effect was completely inhibited following pharmacological blockade with L-NAME. Based on these findings, we conclude that VBA alters renal function and promotes increased nitric oxide production. Full article

Knowing the specific characteristics and animal tuberculosis risk factors present and applying good practices are crucial points in combating tuberculosis (TB) in a Mediterranean multi-species scenario. The objective of this work is to statistically analyze the association between the existence of TB in areas with a marked game–livestock interface, with various complementary factors found in 30 extensive farms in southern Portugal, such as the number of animals of each large game species present in the territory and the frequency of their sightings. Collecting this information, an inferential statistical analysis was conducted to obtain information on the association type between TB occurrence in the farms and the presence of highlighted factors. The main statistical results show an association between the presence of large game species and TB occurrence in the analyzed areas. Thus, in a multi-species scenario, large game species are a crucial component in TB maintenance, namely when stricter contact occurs. This could be one of the reasons why TB continues to circulate and why the eradication process is so difficult; the risk of zoonotic transmission is evident. It is crucial to apply biosecurity tools to improve the alignment and structure of natural resource management strategies. Full article

The assessment of the efficacy of antiseizure medications (ASMs) in animal models of acute seizures has played a critical role in these drugs’ success in clinical trials for human epilepsy. One of the most widely used animal models for this purpose is the maximal electroshock seizure (MES) model. While there are numerous published reports on the efficacy of conventional ASMs in MES models, there is a need to expand the understanding on the brain concentrations that are needed to achieve optimal levels of efficacy in this model. We assessed the pharmacokinetic/pharmacodynamic (PK/PD) profiles of six ASMs, namely carbamazepine (CBZ), phenytoin (PHT), valproic acid (VPA), lacosamide (LSM), cenobamate (CNB), and retigabine (RTG), using MES models in mice and rats. EC50 values for plasma and the brain were generally higher in mice than rats, with fold differences ranging from 1.3- to 8.6-fold for plasma and from 1.2- to 11.5-fold for brain. Phenytoin showed the largest interspecies divergence. These results suggest that rats may exhibit greater sensitivity to seizure protection in the MES model, likely reflecting species differences in metabolism and brain penetration. These findings highlight the value of considering concentration–response variations and species-specific differences when assessing the efficacy of both conventional ASMs and novel compounds exhibiting anticonvulsant activity. Small ruminant lentiviruses (SRLVs) are widespread and have a long co-evolutionary history with their hosts, namely sheep and goats. These viruses induce insidious pathologies, causing significant financial losses and animal welfare issues for the affected flocks. In Switzerland, in the 1980s, an eradication campaign was launched targeting these viruses, exclusively in goats, eliminating the virulent SRLV-B strains from the goat population, in which SRLV-B-induced arthritis was prevalent. Nevertheless, although they do not seem to induce clinical diseases, SRLV-A strains continue to circulate in Swiss goats. For this study, we contacted farmers who had animals testing positive for these strains during the census from 2011 to 2012 and visited six of these flocks, conducting serological, virological, and clinical analyses of the animals. We confirmed the absence of SRLV-B; however, we have detected SRLV-A in these flocks. Positive and negative animals lived in close contact for ten years and, except for a small flock of 13 animals, 7 of which tested positive, the transmission of these viruses proved inefficient. None of the positive animals showed any pathology attributable to SRLV infection. These encouraging results allowed us to formulate recommendations for the continued surveillance of these viruses in the Swiss goat population. Full article

To achieve regional sustainable development, the low-carbon transformation of agriculture is essential, as it serves both as a significant carbon source and as a potential carbon sink. This study calculated the agricultural carbon emissions in Liaocheng from 2010 to 2022 by analyzing processes including crop cultivation, animal husbandry, and agricultural input. Additionally, a simulation model of the water–energy–food–carbon nexus (WEFC-Nexus) for Liaocheng’s agricultural production process was developed. Using Vensim PLE 10.0.0 software, this study constructed a WEFC-Nexus model encompassing four major subsystems: economic development, agricultural production, agricultural inputs, and water use. The model explored four policy scenarios: business-as-usual scenario (S1), ideal agricultural development (S2), strengthening agricultural investment (S3), and reducing agricultural input costs (S4). It also forecast the trends in carbon emissions and primary sector GDP under these different scenarios from 2023 to 2030. The conclusions were as follows: (1) Total agricultural carbon emissions exhibited a three-phase trajectory, namely, “rapid growth (2010–2014)–sharp decline (2015–2020)–gradual rebound (2021–2022)”, with sectoral contributions ranked as livestock farming (50%) > agricultural inputs (27%) > crop cultivation (23%). (2) The carbon emissions per unit of primary sector GDP (CEAG) for S2, S3, and S4 decreased by 8.86%, 5.79%, and 7.72%, respectively, compared to S1. The relationship between the carbon emissions under the four scenarios is S3 > S1 > S2 > S4. The relationship between the four scenarios in the primary sector GDP is S3 > S2 > S4 > S1. S2 can both control carbon emissions and achieve growth in primary industry output. Policy recommendations emphasize reducing chemical fertilizer use, optimizing livestock management, enhancing agricultural technology efficiency, and adjusting agricultural structures to balance economic development with environmental sustainability. Psoriasis is a chronic inflammatory autoimmune disease that causes significant deterioration of the quality of life, and due to its multifactorial causes, it is often difficult to manage. Apart from genetic and environmental components, an important part of its pathophysiology comprises an oxidative stress induction that the standard antioxidative mechanisms of the human body cannot compensate for. Moreover, in many psoriatic patients, there is a documented imbalance between antioxidant and pro-oxidative factors. Usually, psoriasis is evaluated using the Psoriasis Area and Severity Index (PASI) score. It has been demonstrated that dietary choices can lead to significant modification of PASI scores. Hypocaloric diets that are rich in antioxidants are highly effective in this regard, especially when focusing on vegetables and restricting consumption of animal-derived protein. Specific dietary regimens, namely the Mediterranean diet and potentially the ketogenic diet, are very beneficial, in the former case owing in large part to the omega-three fatty acids it provides and its ability to alter gut microbiome, a factor which seems to play a notable role in the pathogenesis of the disease. Another option is the topical application of vitamin D and its analogues, combined with corticosteroids, which can ameliorate the manifestations of psoriasis at the level of the skin. Finally, oral vitamin D supplementation has a positive impact on psoriatic arthritis and can mitigate the risk of associated comorbidities. Full article

Expressive imitation in the performing arts is typically trained through animal behavior imitation, aiming not only to reproduce action trajectories but also to recreate rhythm, style and emotional states. However, evaluation of such animal imitation behaviors relies heavily on teachers’ subjective judgments, lacking structured criteria, exhibiting low inter-rater consistency and being difficult to quantify. To enhance the objectivity and interpretability of the scoring process, this study develops a machine learning and structured pose data-based auxiliary evaluation framework for imitation quality. The proposed framework innovatively constructs three types of feature sets, namely baseline, ablation, and enhanced, and integrates recursive feature elimination with feature importance ranking to identify a stable and interpretable set of core structural features. This enables the training of machine learning models with strong capabilities in structured modeling and sensitivity to informative features. The analysis of the modeling results indicates that temporal–rhythm features play a significant role in score prediction and that only a small number of key feature values are required to model teachers’ ratings with high precision. The proposed framework not only lays a methodological foundation for standardized and AI-assisted evaluation in performing arts education but also expands the application boundaries of computer vision and machine learning in this field. Mycobacterium (M.) tuberculosis mostly spreads from active tuberculosis (TB) patients to human contacts, although human-to-animal and animal-to-human transmission has been described. Here, we present a rare case of rifampicin-resistant tuberculosis (RR-TB) transmission from a companion dog to its owner, highlighting the zoonotic potential of the pathogen. Namely, a 37-year-old Croatian man was diagnosed with RR-TB, with whole-genome sequencing analysis revealing a close genetic link to the strain isolated from his dog, which had died of miliary TB six years earlier. This case emphasizes the complexity of TB transmission dynamics, particularly involving companion animals, and underlines the importance of integrated “One Health” approaches for TB control. Awareness of zoonotic TB risks is essential for the early detection and prevention of cross-species transmission, especially in vulnerable populations and households with close human–animal contact. Amyloids are protein aggregates having a cross-β structure, and they reveal some unusual properties, like interactions with specific dyes and resistance to actions of detergents and proteases, as well as the capability to force some proteins to change their conformation from a soluble form to aggregates. The occurrence of amyloids is not restricted to humans and animals, as they also exist in microbial cells. However, contrary to animals, where amyloids are usually pathological molecules, bacterial amyloids are often functional, participating in various physiological processes. In this review, we focus on a specific property of bacterial amyloids, namely their ability to interact with nucleic acids and resultant regulatory mechanisms. Moreover, some of these interactions might play indirect roles in the pathomechanisms of human neurodegenerative and inflammatory diseases; these aspects are also summarized and discussed in this review. Genome-Wide Association Study and RNA-Seq Analysis Uncover Candidate Genes Controlling Growth Traits in Red Tilapia (Oreochromis spp.) Under Hyperosmotic Stress

Growth traits are the most important economic traits in red tilapia (Oreochromis spp.) production, and are the main targets for its genetic improvement. Increasing salinity levels in the environment are affecting the growth, development, and molecular processes of aquatic animals. Red tilapia tolerates saline water to some degree. However, few credible genetic markers or potential genes are available for choosing fast-growth traits in salt-tolerant red tilapia. This work used genome-wide association study (GWAS) and RNA-sequencing (RNA-seq) to discover genes related to four growth traits in red tilapia cultured in saline water. Through genotyping, it was determined that 22 chromosomes have 12,776,921 high-quality single-nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs). One significant SNP and eight suggestive SNPs were obtained, explaining 0.0019% to 0.3873% of phenotypic variance. A significant SNP peak associated with red tilapia growth traits was located on chr7 (chr7-47464467), and plxnb2 was identified as the candidate gene in this region. A total of 501 differentially expressed genes (DEGs) were found in the muscle of fast-growing individuals compared to those of slow-growing ones, according to a transcriptome analysis. Combining the findings of the GWAS and RNA-seq analysis, 11 candidate genes were identified, namely galnt9, esrrg, map7, mtfr2, kcnj8, fhit, dnm1, cald1, plxnb2, nuak1, and bpgm. These genes were involved in ‘other types of O-glycan biosynthesis’, ‘glycine, serine and threonine metabolism’, ‘glycolysis/gluconeogenesis’, ‘mucin-type O-glycan biosynthesis’ and ‘purine metabolism signaling’ pathways. We have developed molecular markers to genetically breed red tilapia that grow quickly in salty water. Our study lays the foundation for the future marker-assisted selection of growth traits in salt-tolerant red tilapia. Full article

Isolation, Identification, and Drug Sensitivity Test of Pseudomonas aeruginosa from Cynomolgus Monkey (Macaca fascicularis)

In this study, we isolated and identified bacteria from the feces of a diarrheal cynomolgus monkey. The results showed that the isolated strain was P. aeruginosa, named PA/CM-101101. Morphological observations indicated that when cultured on Luria–Bertani (LB) nutrient agar at 37 °C for 24 h, the strain formed smooth, slightly elevated colonies with neat and wavy edges. On acetamide agar at the same temperature and duration, the colonies appeared flat with irregular edges and a faint pink periphery, while the medium changed to rose-red; in LB broth at 37 °C for 24 h, the medium became turbid and yellowish-green. Gram staining revealed that it was negative and rod-shaped, without sporulation characteristics. The 16S rRNA gene sequence analysis showed that the sequence identity of the strain shared more than 98.4% similarity with 11 strains of P. aeruginosa from various sources in GenBank. The animal toxicity test showed that it had a strong pathogenic effect on mice. The results of drug sensitivity tests showed that strain PA/CM-101101 was sensitive to amikacin, azithromycin, cefoperazone, ceftazidime, ceftriaxone, ciprofloxacin, gentamicin, imipenem, levofloxacin, meropenem, norfloxacin, ofloxacin, and polymyxin B; however, it displayed resistance to ampicillin, cefadroxil, cefazolin, erythromycin, and vancomycin. The research findings provide valuable insights for diagnosis and treatment strategies for cynomolgus monkeys. It also provides a reference for molecular epidemiological studies. To our knowledge, this is the first time P. aeruginosa isolated from the diarrhea feces of cynomolgus monkey has been reported. Full article
