The agri-food sector generates significant quantities of by-products and waste biomass, representing both an environmental challenge and an opportunity for resource recovery within a circular bioeconomy. This study developed a decision-support framework for the sustainable valorization of major residues from the Italian agri-food sector. Following a Material Flow Analysis (MFA) of multiple Italian agri-food supply chains, tomato and grape supply chains were selected as representative case studies because they generated the largest quantities of valorizable by-products among the agri-food sectors evaluated, namely tomato pomace and grape marc. MFA based on FAOSTAT and PRODCOM data (2019–2023) was combined with a literature review to assess biomass availability and physicochemical characteristics. The analysis identified tomato pomace and grape marc as the predominant residues. Tomato pomace showed high moisture content (63.34%), balanced organic composition, and a favorable C/N ratio, supporting its suitability for anaerobic digestion with an average biomethane potential (BMP) of 0.143 m3 CH4/kg TVS. Conversely, grape marc exhibited a carbon-rich lignocellulosic structure, with a carbon content of 47.67%, C/N ratio of 24.73, and BMP of 0.195 m3 CH4/kg TVS, favoring thermochemical conversion pathways, particularly pyrolysis. The framework also highlights the importance of cascading strategies, prioritizing the recovery of high-value compounds, and pretreatment approaches to improve biomass conversion efficiency. Achieving energy sustainability is a major challenge across all sectors of an economy. In agri-food systems (AFSs), this challenge is twofold in the context of energy sustainability; one challenge is to reduce fossil fuel dependency, and another challenge is to provide safe and nutritious food for humans and animals. An appropriate aggregate indicator needs to be used for assessing the energy sustainability of AFSs. This study presents a systematic literature review aimed at developing a core indicators framework to support both research and policymaking. It also critically evaluates and updates existing indicators currently used to evaluate energy sustainability in AFSs, considering environmental, economic, social and technical dimensions. Environmental indicators, such as energy use efficiency, net energy balance, carbon footprint, exergy destruction and renewable energy share, measure the ecological impacts of agricultural practices. Economic indicators, including energy cost share, levelized cost of energy, energy return on investment, and productivity per unit of energy input, reflect how energy use influences farm competitiveness and resilience. Social indicators such as equitable access to energy, labor productivity gains, and system resilience to energy shocks highlight the broader human and societal aspects of energy sustainability. Technical indicators, including technology performance, maintenance intensity, technology lifespan, and resource circularity, emphasize the need to minimize resource depletion and environmental harm. Together, these sustainability indicators provide a strong framework for assessing trade-offs and guiding policy decisions that support the transition toward low-carbon, resilient, and resource-efficient AFSs. Their effective development and implementation require interdisciplinary knowledge integration and active engagement with relevant societal stakeholders in a transdisciplinary sustainability context. This study examines the influence of green market orientation (GMO) and green entrepreneurial orientation (GEO) on business competitiveness in increasingly demanding environmental contexts. Drawing on the literature on strategic management and sustainability, this research analyzes how environmentally oriented market and entrepreneurial capabilities contribute to strengthening firms’ competitive positioning. Using a quantitative approach, data were collected from 200 companies in the agri-food and manufacturing sectors, and the data were analyzed through Partial Least Squares Structural Equation Modeling (PLS-SEM). The results confirm that both GMO (β = 0.534; p < 0.001) and GEO (β = 0.395; p < 0.001) have a significant influence on competitiveness, with GMO showing a stronger impact. These findings suggest that firms integrating environmental market demands and fostering innovation, proactiveness, and risk-taking with an ecological focus achieve enhanced competitive performance. This study concludes that green-oriented strategic capabilities constitute key drivers of sustainable competitive advantages and represent a relevant pathway for organizational strengthening in dynamic and environmentally regulated markets. Agriculture plays a fundamental role in ensuring global food security in the context of a growing population; however, it is also responsible for the substantial consumption of natural resources and greenhouse gas emissions. In this context, the adoption of sustainable practices represents a key strategy to improve agri-food supply chains, including the citrus sector. This study applies the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) protocol to conduct a systematic review aimed at assessing the economic value generated by environmental, social, and economic sustainability practices along the citrus supply chain. The analysis focuses in particular on the role of sustainability certifications, examining both their potential benefits and the constraints associated with their adoption for producers and markets. Positioned at the beginning of the supply chain, producers play a pivotal role in the adoption of sustainable practices, whereas consumers, at the end, are instrumental in assigning market value to sustainability attributes through their purchasing decisions. The results highlight that, although consumer interest in ethical and environmentally friendly citrus products is increasing, this demand is often constrained by the lack of clear, standardized, and easily interpretable sustainability indicators. The review also reveals a significant imbalance in the existing literature, with economic assessments predominantly focused on environmental and production-related outcomes, while the economic value generated by social sustainability practices remains largely unexplored. Moreover, the review emphasizes the strategic role of policymakers in fostering sustainable transitions by providing economic incentives and facilitating access to finance, particularly for smallholders. Overall, the findings suggest that sustainability can generate economic value in the citrus supply chain; however, its effectiveness strongly depends on market recognition, certification credibility, supply chain organization, and institutional support. Olive oil represents a precious resource for the agri-food sector, not just economically but also for its health properties due to the presence of bioactive compounds. The aim of this study is to evaluate the Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (1H NMR)-based metabolomics profiles of monovarietal olive oils from Coratina, Ogliarola garganica and Peranzana, which are typically included in the “Dauno” PDO. Analysis by 1H NMR metabolic profiling was carried out to develop a strategy for understanding the differences based on cultivar. NMR spectroscopy coupled with multivariate statistical analysis (MVA) revealed significant differences in fatty acid profiles and phenolic compounds according to cultivar. In particular, Coratina oils were higher in squalene, oleic acid and polyphenols than Ogliarola garganica and Peranzana. Conversely, the latter two showed higher contents of polyunsaturated fatty acids and lower levels of phenolic compounds. Furthermore, as the olive oils were influenced by several factors, in addition to cultivar, the effects of tree age on the chemical composition of Peranzana olive oils were investigated. MVA revealed different fatty acid and polyphenol contents between secular and young trees. These results may contribute to expanding the literature data on the 1H NMR-based chemometric approach as a powerful tool for quality and authenticity control of olive oil. Full article

Agricultural reconversion has become a key strategy for the continuity and competitiveness of primary-sector productive units, confronting scenarios such as low profitability, environmental pressures, and changes in agri-food markets. The objective of this study was to identify the economic, social, and environmental factors that influenced the agricultural reconversion to lemon cultivation (Citrus limon) in production units in the municipality of Calvillo, Aguascalientes, Mexico. During 2023 and 2024, a total of 32 semi-structured interviews were conducted with producers who had undertaken restructuring processes, from which perception variables were constructed across three dimensions: economic, social, and crop management. Through cluster analysis, three distinct profiles were identified based on their perceptions, resource use, and organizational characteristics (p < 0.05). Results indicate that economic factors are the main driver of productive change (low crop profitability p = 0.0035); however, environmental dimension and efficient resource management, particularly water, are crucial to consolidating the conversion. Furthermore, government support, production experience, and membership in organizations influence perceptions of viability and the prospects of the new crop. The findings suggest that agricultural production restructuring does not follow a uniform pattern, but is shaped by structural, perceptual, and contextual factors, highlighting the importance of targeted public policies and integrated strategies for technical and organizational support. Small- and medium-sized enterprises, especially in the agricultural food sector, struggle to implement end-to-end product traceability systems, such as enterprise resource planning (ERP), due to the high costs and complexity involved for businesses of this scale. As customer expectations and regulatory requirements place an increasing emphasis on traceability and transparency, the combined use of industrial Internet of things (IIoT) technologies and blockchain-based smart contracts offers a promising pathway to cost-effective automation of supply chain processes. This paper develops a conceptual, multi-layer architecture that integrates sensing, communication, integration and smart-contract layers to support affordable, automated and extensible traceability for agri-food supply chains. Building on information processing theory and transaction cost economics, the framework explains how such architecture can reduce information uncertainty, lower monitoring costs and strengthen the organisational trust in agri-food supply chains. The framework is empirically illustrated and tested through an implementation that links distributed sensing infrastructure with a blockchain-based smart contract in a real agricultural supply chain setting. The evaluation assesses operational performance, data integrity and cost-efficiency, demonstrating that the proposed architecture can serve as a viable alternative or most importantly complement to traditional ERP solutions for small- and medium-sized enterprises that seek end-to-end traceability, transparency and automation. Croatia’s accession to the European Union in 2013, followed by the abolition of the EU milk quota regime in 2015, exposed a structurally vulnerable dairy and beef sector to the dual pressure of single-market price convergence and post-quota production reallocation. While prior partial equilibrium modelling work on Croatian agriculture has assessed broad accession impacts and CAP reform scenario comparisons, no study has yet quantified the post-quota structural transition trajectory of the Croatian dairy and beef sectors with mechanism-level interpretation under the actually implemented CAP framework. This study simulates and analytically interprets the medium-term (to 2030) trajectories of the Croatian dairy and beef sectors using the AGMEMOD partial equilibrium framework, with an updated Croatian country-level model incorporating CAP 2023–2027 parameters, the post-quota dairy module specification, and historical data extending to 2024. Results indicate continued structural contraction: dairy cow numbers decline from 70.9 thousand head (2024) to 66.0 thousand head (2030); milk production falls 8.6% to 399.6 million litres; total cattle population declines by 4.0% and beef and veal meat production falls 11.0% to 33.1 thousand tonnes. Self-sufficiency rates deteriorate to 41% for milk and 51% for beef by 2030. The study contributes empirical evidence on small Member State post-quota adjustment dynamics, demonstrates that the current CAP 2023–2027 instruments are unlikely to reverse the contraction trajectory under baseline assumptions, and raises explicit food security implications for national agri-food policy. Italian “Agricultural Engineering”, while evolving toward the broader, interdisciplinary field of “Biosystems Engineering” (which also includes the study of biomasses/biomaterials, field and forest mechanization in difficult contexts and advanced post-harvest agri-food technologies), suffers from a structural critical issue due to its historical academic placement within the Agricultural rather than the Engineering departments. This positioning limits the depth of the technical subjects proposed to the students and does not facilitate the necessary collaboration with core engineering disciplines in research and didactics activities, thereby potentially slowing innovation in crucial fields like agro-bio-energies, precision agriculture and field robotics. To address this misalignment and foster inter-departmental synergy, this study proposes adopting the Contamination Lab (C-Lab) model as the archetype of a possible framework of academic and professional networking involving and centered on Agricultural Engineering. C-Labs (transdisciplinary platforms proposed by the Italian Ministry of University and Research) function as experiential laboratories, gathering students from Engineering, Agronomy, Computer Science, and Economics to collaboratively develop solutions to real-world challenges posed by industry stakeholders. The integration of a permanent, thematic C-Lab focused on agri-forestry and food machinery, supported by methodologies for enhancing creativity in technical fields, such as design thinking, represents an effective (and necessary) strategy to give Agricultural Engineering greater visibility in the Italian (and international) scenario and, prospectively, relocate it to the center of any research involving the technological and technical aspects of agriculture, forestry and food production. It is concluded that this initiative can serve as an institutional bridge for hybrid training, which is essential for aligning academic competencies with the growing demands for innovation and multidisciplinary professionalism in the national agri-food tech sector. Bioeconomy is an important concept of economic development, supported at the highest political levels. However, its successful implementation calls for action within local markets. This study, therefore, examined the market readiness to engage in bioeconomy growth and emerging value chains in Italy, Slovenia, Germany, Poland, Slovakia, and Austria. The objectives were to assess the market readiness for placing novel bioproducts based on by-products and waste from primary production and agri-food processing sectors, and to evaluate the economics of their production. Specific goals were to estimate the availability of by-products and waste used for making new products, evaluate the main directions and trends in the use of by-products and waste, analyse the main barriers and restrictions to by-product and waste supplies to new enterprises and innovative applications, and make an economic assessment of the market entry of innovative products and their development. The study showed that the oil industry, with a high residue potential, was most often chosen to market new products. Other sectors where value chains can be created or modified are the fruit, winery, grain and milling, wood, hemp, and vegetable industries. PESTEL analysis demonstrated that economic factors, at both national and global levels, are the most common barriers to supplying by-products and waste to new business entities. Technological factors also significantly impede the delivery of by-products and waste to such new enterprises and their processing into novel products. In contrast, social conditions are the main factors stimulating supply of by-products and waste to such new plants. The results provide a preliminary insight into the Central European market and its enormous development potential, which is already implicated in the context of growing bioeconomy. Full article

Agricultural public policy analysis in Mexico is hampered by data fragmentation across 32 decentralized state agencies. This study presents the Mexican Agricultural Policy Observatory (MAPO), a digital governance tool developed using R-Shiny to centralize and visualize policy information. Through a systematic audit and functional classification adapted from World Bank frameworks, 429 were analyzed. Results indicate a significant concentration in financing (42%) and a critical gap in commercialization support. MAPO enhances transparency and enables evidence-based policymaking by cross-referencing policy data with production metrics, facilitating the identification of regional priorities and strategic opportunities for integrated agricultural development. This study examines how Ukrainian enterprises of different size classes adapted their trade activity under the compounded shocks of COVID-19 and the full-scale war. The article addresses national economic resilience and sustainable recovery by examining how export and import dynamics changed among micro-, small-, medium-, and large-sized firms during 2015–2023. The methodology combines the logarithmic decomposition of intensive and extensive trade margins with a strategic positioning matrix based on labour productivity and the net-export coefficient. The results reveal marked size-based differences in aggregate trade-adaptation patterns. During the pandemic, microbusinesses shifted toward a quantity-led compensatory pattern, whereas during the war, medium-sized and large enterprises showed a stronger efficiency-led export pattern. Micro- and small firms displayed characteristics associated with technology-oriented adaptation, combining rapid labour productivity growth with negative trade balances, whereas large enterprises were positioned closer to the niche-exporter profile, supporting the balance of payments but showing signs of slower productivity growth. Medium-sized firms occupied a transformation zone, indicating unresolved adjustment pressure and continued dependence on trade restructuring. These findings suggest that enterprise-size heterogeneity can serve as an analytical basis for differentiated recovery policy. The results are relevant for trade-dependent sectors, including agri-food and food-processing systems, where recovery depends on technological upgrading, export capacity building, and the more effective conversion of imports into future export potential. The European Union’s Farm-to-Fork (F2F) Strategy sets an ambitious agenda for a socio-ecological transition, positioning agriculture as a critical sector for achieving sustainable food systems. The European Union’s Farm-to-Fork (F2F) Strategy sets an ambitious agenda for a socio-ecological transition, positioning agriculture as a critical sector for achieving sustainable food systems. However, its implementation faces significant systemic barriers that hinder its transformative potential. This paper applies a diagnostic framework, derived from the H2020-funded PHOENIX project, that identifies six key challenges to democratic innovations in environmental governance: prolonged timeframes for tangible results, the complexity of environmental issues, the need for transcalar cooperation, the imperative to foster behavioural change, limited deliberative dialogue, and the need to build mutual trust. Through a review of public policies and scholarly literature, this analysis evaluates how these challenges manifest within the F2F Strategy, impacting farmers and the broader agri-food system. The findings demonstrate that barriers to F2F implementation are not solely technical or economic but are deeply linked to governance fragmentation, uneven knowledge flows, and deficits in trust relations. Crucially, the study reveals that Agricultural Knowledge and Innovation Systems (AKIS) and associated Education and Training (ET) consistently emerge as pivotal enabling mechanisms to mitigate these constraints. The research generates actionable recommendations to reinforce F2F by redefining the roles of innovation, education, and multi-level collaboration in building resilient and sustainable EU agri-food systems. Agri-food systems account for a substantial share of global greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions, with a significant proportion arising from upstream supply-chain activities beyond direct operational control. In this context, effective decarbonization requires systematic assessment of emissions across all life-cycle stages. This study applies an ISO 14040/44-compliant cradle-to-grave Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) to CERELAC® infant cereal, a processed dairy-based product, to quantify Scope 1, Scope 2, and Scope 3 emissions and identify mitigation pathways across the full product life cycle. Results indicate that Scope 3 emissions account for 94.3% of total product emissions, with product use (44.7%) and purchased goods and services (36.9%) as the primary contributors. Upstream agricultural inputs—particularly milk powder—emerge as the dominant hotspot due to methane emissions and energy-intensive processing. Scenario-based evaluation suggests that regenerative sourcing, ingredient optimization, packaging redesign, logistics improvements, and consumer-phase engagement could significantly reduce life cycle emissions. The findings demonstrate how product-level LCA can operationalize Scope 3 decarbonization strategies in processed food systems, bridging corporate net-zero ambitions with actionable supply chain interventions. These results provide transferable insights for cleaner production transitions within the agri-food sector. Full article

The sustainability of olive oil cooperatives is a critical issue for the stability and competitiveness of the Mediterranean agri-food sector in an environment of increasing environmental pressures, structural constraints, and changing market conditions. This study assesses the performance and sustainability of 33 Greek olive oil cooperatives over the period 2020–2024 using a non-radial Maximum Distance from the Frontier (MDF) DEA model and the Malmquist Productivity Index. The empirical results highlight strong structural heterogeneity in performance, with average technical efficiency under constant returns to scale remaining relatively low (mean CRS efficiency = 0.49) and scale efficiency averaging 0.77, indicating that a large share of cooperatives operates far from the best-practice frontier and below optimal production scale. The diachronic evolution of productivity appears moderate and unstable, driven mainly by improvements in relative efficiency rather than technological progress. The Malmquist analysis reveals an average technological change index below unity (mean TECHCH = 0.84), reflecting the slow diffusion of modern processing and standardization technologies across the sector. By integrating static and dynamic efficiency analyses, the study provides a comprehensive assessment of productivity dynamics and sustainability challenges in Greek olive oil cooperatives. The findings contribute to a deeper understanding of structural inequalities and highlight the economic foundations of sustainability in cooperative agri-food systems, offering directions for the transition toward more sustainable and competitive production patterns.
