Effects of Aggregate Size and Nozzle Diameter on Printability and Mechanical Properties of 3D Printed Ferronickel Slag–GGBFS Concrete

Ferronickel slag and ground granulated blast-furnace slag (GGBFS) are solid waste by-products from the metallurgical industry. When incorporated into concrete, they help promote resource utilization, reduce hydration heat, and lower both solid waste emissions and the carbon footprint. To facilitate the application of ferronickel slag–GGBFS concrete in 3D printing, this study examines how aggregate size and nozzle diameter affect its performance. The investigation involves in situ printing, rheological characterization, mechanical testing, and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) analysis. Results indicate that excessively large average aggregate size negatively impacts the smooth extrusion of concrete strips, resulting in a cross-sectional width that exceeds the preset dimension. Excessively small average aggregate size results in insufficient yield stress, leading to a narrow cross-section of the extruded strip that fails to meet printing specifications. The extrusion performance is closely related to both the average aggregate size and nozzle diameter, which can significantly influence the normal extrusion stability and print quality of 3D printed concrete strips. The thixotropic performance improves with an increase in the aggregate size. Both compressive and flexural strengths improve with increasing aggregate size but decrease with an increase in the printing nozzle size. Anisotropy in mechanical behavior decreases progressively as both parameters mentioned increase. By examining the cracks and pores at the interlayer interface, this study elucidates the influence mechanism of aggregate size as well as printing nozzle parameters on the mechanical properties of 3D printed ferronickel slag–GGBFS concrete. This study also recommends the following ranges. When the maximum aggregate size exceeds 50% of the nozzle diameter, smooth extrusion is not achievable. If it falls between 30% and 50%, extrusion is possible but shaping remains unstable. When it is below 30%, both stable extrusion and good shaping can be achieved. Full article

Background/objectives: Chronic kidney disease (CKD) affects up to 15% of the global population and is driven by vascular and interstitial damage, and is most prevalent in persons with hypertension and diabetes. Vitamin K, a necessary cofactor for activation of vitamin K-dependent proteins may modulate these processes. It is well established that vitamin K deficiency is associated with CKD, but the therapeutic effects of supplementation on kidney function are still uncertain. We aimed to review the current evidence on the effect of vitamin K deficiency and supplementation on any marker of renal function and kidney disease, across general adult populations and CKD patient populations. Methods: A search was conducted in PubMed, targeting terms related to vitamin K status and CKD. Studies were included if they reported data on vitamin K status or supplementation in relation to kidney function outcomes. Results: A total of 16 studies were included. Nine interventional studies were included and confirmed that vitamin K supplementation improves biomarkers of vitamin K status but showed no consistent beneficial effects on renal function. Seven observational studies across populations found significant associations between vitamin K status and decline in kidney function; however, associations were often attenuated after adjustments. Conclusions: No clear effect of supplementation was observed on the reported kidney markers in patient populations. A clear association between low vitamin K status and impaired kidney function was confirmed. Studying heterogeneity makes the comparability and generalizability of the results difficult. Our review highlights the need for more cohort studies and clinical trials in general or patient populations. Full article

Macrophage-mediated inflammation is known to be involved in the epithelial–mesenchymal transition (EMT) of various types of cancer. This makes macrophage-derived inflammatory factors prime targets for the development of new treatments. This study uncovers the therapeutic potential and action mechanism of DAB-2-28, a small-molecule derived from para-aminobenzoic acid, in the treatment of breast cancer. The luminal MCF-7 and the triple-negative MDA-MB-231 cancer cell lines used in this study represent, respectively, breast cancers in which the differentiation states are related to the epithelial phenotype of the mammary gland and breast cancers expressing a highly aggressive mesenchymal phenotype. In MCF-7 cells, soluble factors from macrophage-conditioned media (CM-MØ) induce a characteristic morphology of mesenchymal cells with an upregulated expression of Snail1, a mesenchymal marker, as opposed to a decrease in the expression of E-cadherin, an epithelial marker. DAB-2-28 does not affect the differential expression of Snail1 and E-cadherin in response to CM-MØ, but negatively impacts other hallmarks of EMT by decreasing invasion and migration capacities, in addition to MMP9 expression and gelatinase activity, in both MCF-7 and MDA-MB-231 cells. Moreover, DAB-2-28 inhibits the phosphorylation of key pro-EMT transcriptional factors, such as NFκB, STAT3, SMAD2, CREB, and/or AKT proteins, in breast cancer cells exposed to different EMT inducers. Overall, our study provides evidence suggesting that inhibition of EMT initiation or maintenance is a key mechanism by which DAB-2-28 can exert anti-tumoral effects in breast cancer cells. Social anxiety is a prevalent mental health concern among college students, often intensified by academic and interpersonal pressures on campus. This study investigated the relationship between physical activity, loneliness, and social anxiety among college students, aiming to examine the mediating role of loneliness in the process of physical activity affecting social anxiety, as well as the moderating role of gender in this mediating effect. A cross-sectional research design was adopted, and data on physical activity levels, loneliness, and social anxiety were collected through questionnaires completed by 638 students at a university in China. This study conducted a single-factor Harman test, descriptive statistical analysis, reliability analysis, correlation analysis, and independent-samples t-tests, and it modeled the moderated mediation effect. The results showed that physical activity was significantly and negatively correlated with both loneliness and social anxiety. Loneliness played a mediating role in the influence of physical activity on social anxiety, and this mediating effect was moderated by gender, being more pronounced in the female group. This study concluded that physical activity can help alleviate social anxiety, but the mechanism involving the reduction of loneliness is more apparent in women, indicating the need to consider gender differences when developing interventions, as there may be other, more significant reasons for men. Comparative Effectiveness of Cognitive Behavioral Therapies in Schizophrenia and Schizoaffective Disorder: A Systematic Review and Meta-Regression Analysis

Background: Cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) has shown consistent efficacy in individuals with psychosis, as supported by many trials. One classical distinction is that between affective and non-affective psychosis. Few studies have specifically examined the possible moderating role of substantial affective elements. In this systematic review and meta-regression analysis, we assess how CBT response differs across the affective spectrum in psychosis. Methods: We included studies assessing various CBT modalities, including third-wave therapies, administered in people with psychosis. The study protocol is published in the Open Science Framework. Meta-regression was conducted to assess whether the proportion of participants with affective psychosis (AP), as proxied by a documented diagnosis of schizoaffective (SZA) disorder, moderated CBT efficacy across positive, negative, and depressive symptom domains. Results: The literature search identified 4457 records, of which 39 studies were included. The median proportion of SZA disorder participants was 17%, with a total of 422 AP participants represented. Meta-regression showed a trend toward lower CBT efficacy for positive symptoms with a higher SZA disorder proportion (β = +0.10 SMD per 10% increase in AP; p = 0.12), though it was not statistically significant. No significant associations were found for negative (β = +0.05; p = 0.73) or depressive symptoms (β = −0.02; p = 0.78). Heterogeneity was substantial across all models (I2 ranging from 54% to 80%), and funnel plot asymmetry was observed in negative and depressive symptoms, indicating possible publication bias. Risk of bias assessment showed the anticipated inherent difficulty of psychotherapies in blinding and possibly dropout rates affecting some studies. Conclusions: Affective symptoms may reduce the effectiveness of CBT for positive symptoms in psychotic disorders, although the findings did not reach statistical significance. Other patient-level characteristics in psychosis could indicate which patients can benefit most from CBT modalities. Full article

Fyn is widely involved in diverse cellular physiological processes, including cell growth and survival, and has been implicated in the regulation of energy metabolism and the pathogenesis of diabetes mellitus through multiple pathways. Fyn plays a role in increasing fat accumulation and promoting insulin resistance, and it also contributes to the development of diabetic complications such as diabetic kidney disease and diabetic retinopathy. The primary mechanism by which Fyn modulates lipid metabolism is that it inhibits AMP-activated protein kinase (AMPK). Additionally, it affects energy homeostasis through regulating specific signal pathways affecting lipid metabolism including pathways related to CD36, through enhancement of adipocyte differentiation, and through modulating insulin signal transduction. Inflammatory stress is one of the fundamental mechanisms in diabetes mellitus and its complications. Fyn also plays a role in inflammatory stress-related signaling cascades such as the Akt/GSK-3β/Fyn/Nrf2 pathway, exacerbating inflammation in diabetes mellitus. Therefore, Fyn emerges as a promising therapeutic target for regulating glucolipid metabolism and alleviating type 2 diabetes mellitus. This review synthesizes research on the role of Fyn in the regulation of energy metabolism and the development of diabetes mellitus, while exploring its specific regulatory mechanisms. Full article

The Shahejie Formation in Nanpu Sag is a crucial region for deep-layer hydrocarbon exploration in the Bohai Bay Basin. To address the impact of faults on sublacustrine fan formation and spatial distribution within the study area, this study integrated well logging, laboratory analysis, and 3D seismic data to systematically analyze sedimentary characteristics of sandbodies from the first member of the Shahejie Formation (Es1) sublacustrine fans, clarifying their planar and cross-sectional distributions. Further research indicates that Gaoliu Fault activity during Es1 deposition played a significant role in fan development through two mechanisms: (1) vertical displacement between hanging wall and footwall reshaped local paleogeomorphology; (2) tectonic stresses generated by fault movement affected slope stability, triggering gravitational mass transport processes that remobilized fan delta sediments into the central depression zone as sublacustrine fans through slumping and collapse mechanisms. Core observations reveal soft-sediment deformation features, including slump structures, flame structures, and shale rip-up clasts. Seismic profiles show lens-shaped geometries with thick centers thinning laterally, exhibiting lateral pinch-out terminations. Inverse fault-step architectures formed by underlying faults control sandbody distribution patterns, restricting primary deposition locations for sublacustrine fan development. The study demonstrates that sublacustrine fans in the study area are formed by gravity flow processes. A new model was established, illustrating the combined control of the Gaoliu Fault and reverse stepover faults on fan development. These findings provide valuable insights for gravity flow exploration and reservoir prediction in the Nanpu Sag, offering important implications for hydrocarbon exploration in similar lacustrine rift basins. The transportation sector, as a major source of carbon emissions, plays a crucial role in the realization of dual carbon goals worldwide. In this study, an improved least absolute shrinkage and selection operator (LASSO) is used to identify six key factors affecting transportation carbon emissions (TCEs) in China. Aiming at the spatio-temporal characteristics of transportation carbon emissions, a CNN-BiLSTM neural network model is constructed for the first time for prediction, and an improved whale optimization algorithm (EWOA) is introduced for hyperparameter optimization, finding that the prediction model combining spatio-temporal characteristics has a more significant prediction accuracy, and scenario forecasting was carried out using the prediction model. Research indicates that over the past three decades, TCEs have demonstrated a rapid growth trend. Under the baseline, green, low-carbon, and high-carbon scenarios, peak carbon emissions are expected in 2035, 2031, 2030, and 2040. The adoption of a low-carbon scenario represents the most advantageous pathway for the sustainable progression of China’s transportation sector. Consequently, it is imperative for China to accelerate the formulation and implementation of low-carbon policies, promote the application of clean energy and facilitate the green transformation of the transportation sector. These efforts will contribute to the early realization of dual-carbon goals with a positive impact on global sustainable development. Full article

Road networks are essential for access, resource distribution, and population evacuation during natural events. These challenges are pronounced in rural areas, where network redundancy is limited and communities may have social disparities. While traditional risk management systems often focus on the physical consequences of hazard events alone, specialized literature increasingly suggests the development of a more comprehensive approach for risk assessment, where not only physical aspects associated with infrastructure, such as damage level or disruptions, but also the social and economic attributes of the affected population are considered. Consequently, this paper proposes a Vulnerability Access Index (VAI) to support road network decision-making that integrates the social vulnerability of rural communities exposed to natural events, their accessibility to nearby critical infrastructure, and physical risk. The research methodology considers (i) the Social Vulnerability Index (SVI) calculation based on socioeconomic variables, (ii) Importance Index estimation (Iimp) to evaluate access to critical infrastructure, (iii) VAI calculation combining SVI and Iimp, and (iv) application to a case study in the influence area of the Villarrica volcano in southern Chile. The results show that when incorporating social variables and accessibility, infrastructure criticality varies significantly compared to the infrastructure criticality assessment based solely on physical risk, modifying the decision-making regarding road infrastructure robustness and resilience improvements. Background: Workplace mobbing is a widespread phenomenon with serious psychological and emotional consequences on employees’ emotional well-being. Psychological resilience has been identified as a potential protective factor against such adverse outcomes. Aim: This study investigates the relationship between workplace mobbing and emotional well-being, as expressed through positive and negative affect, and examines the mediating role of psychological resilience in this association. Methods: Ninety nurses participated in this cross-sectional study. Data were collected using the Connor–Davidson Resilience Scale (CD-RISC), the Workplace Psychologically Violent Behaviors (WPVB) scale, and the Positive and Negative Affect Schedule (PANAS). Statistical analyses included correlation, multiple regression, and mediation using bootstrapped confidence intervals. Results: Resilience was strongly associated with positive affect (r = 0.74, p < 0.001) and inversely with negative affect (r = −0.46, p < 0.001). Mobbing was significantly related to increased negative affect (β = 0.12, p < 0.001) but not to positive affect. Resilience emerged as the strongest predictor of emotional outcomes and partially mediated the relationship between “Attack on professional role” and negative affect. Conclusions: Psychological resilience plays a key protective role in moderating the emotional impact of workplace mobbing. Enhancing resilience in healthcare professionals may mitigate the negative emotional effects of mobbing, although it does not fully buffer against all its consequences. Full article

Emotion analysis based on electroencephalogram (EEG) sensors is pivotal for human–machine interaction yet faces key challenges in spatio-temporal feature fusion and cross-band and brain-region integration from multi-channel sensor-derived signals. This paper proposes MB-MSTFNet, a novel framework for EEG emotion recognition. The model constructs a 3D tensor to encode band–space–time correlations of sensor data, explicitly modeling frequency-domain dynamics and spatial distributions of EEG sensors across brain regions. A multi-scale CNN-Inception module extracts hierarchical spatial features via diverse convolutional kernels and pooling operations, capturing localized sensor activations and global brain network interactions. Bi-directional GRUs (BiGRUs) model temporal dependencies in sensor time-series, adept at capturing long-range dynamic patterns. Multi-head self-attention highlights critical time windows and brain regions by assigning adaptive weights to relevant sensor channels, suppressing noise from non-contributory electrodes. Experiments on the DEAP dataset, containing multi-channel EEG sensor recordings, show that MB-MSTFNet achieves 96.80 ± 0.92% valence accuracy, 98.02 ± 0.76% arousal accuracy for binary classification tasks, and 92.85 ± 1.45% accuracy for four-class classification. Ablation studies validate that feature fusion, bidirectional temporal modeling, and multi-scale mechanisms significantly enhance performance by improving feature complementarity. This sensor-driven framework advances affective computing by integrating spatio-temporal dynamics and multi-band interactions of EEG sensor signals, enabling efficient real-time emotion recognition. Compared to commuting, grocery shopping trips, despite their profound implications for mixed land use and transportation planning, have received limited attention in travel behavior research. Drawing upon a travel diary survey conducted in a fast-growing metropolitan region of the United States, i.e., Salt Lake County, UT, this research investigated a variety of influential factors affecting mode choices associated with grocery shopping. We analyze how built environment (BE) characteristics, measured at seven spatial scales or different ways of aggregating spatial data—including straight-line buffers, network buffers, and census units—affect travel mode decisions. Key predictors of choosing walking, biking, or transit over driving include age, household size, vehicle ownership, income, land use mix, street density, and distance to the central business district (CBD). Notably, the influence of BE factors on mode choice is sensitive to different spatial aggregation methods and locations of origins and destinations. The straight-line buffer was a good indicator for the influence of store sales amount on mode choices; the network buffer was more suitable for the household built environment factors, whereas the measurement at the census block and block group levels was more effective for store-area characteristics. These findings underscore the importance of considering both the spatial analysis method and the location (home vs. store) when modeling non-work travel. A multi-scalar approach can enhance the accuracy of travel demand models and inform more effective land use and transportation planning strategies. Full article

Coffee’s Impact on Health and Well-Being

Coffee is one of the most widely consumed beverages globally, with over 60% of Americans drinking it daily. This review examines coffee’s multifaceted impact on health and well-being, drawing on decades of research. Overall, the consensus is that moderate coffee intake is more beneficial than harmful across a wide range of health outcomes. Numerous large-scale, prospective cohort studies from around the world have consistently shown that moderate coffee consumption—typically three to five cups per day—is associated with reduced overall mortality and lower risk of major diseases such as cardiovascular diseases, diabetes, stroke, respiratory conditions, cognitive decline, and potentially several types of cancer, including liver and uterine cancers. Both caffeinated and decaffeinated coffee have shown benefits. The addition of sugar and cream to coffee may attenuate coffee’s positive health effects. Despite historical concerns, coffee consumption is not linked to increased risks of cancer, hypertension, or arrhythmia. However, some concerns remain. For pregnant women, coffee consumption should be limited to lower amounts, such that the daily intake of caffeine does not exceed 200 mg/day. Also, excessive caffeinated coffee intake may cause anxiety or sleep disturbances. Coffee’s health-promoting mechanisms include improved glucose balancing, increased physical activity, increased fat oxidation, improved lung function, and reduced inflammation. Beyond mortality and chronic diseases, coffee consumption affects many aspects of well-being: it supports hydration, boosts mental acuity, enhances physical performance, and may aid bowel recovery after surgery. While the field is well-studied via long-term observational cohorts, future research should focus on randomized controlled trials, Mendelian randomization studies, and granular analyses of coffee types and additives. Background/Objectives: Breast cancer was the leading cause of malignant tumors among women in 2022. About two-thirds of breast cancer cases are hormone-receptor-positive. In these patients, aromatase inhibitors are a mainstay of treatment, but associated musculoskeletal symptoms can negatively affect patient compliance. Aromatase-inhibitor-induced carpal tunnel syndrome represents one of the main causes of aromatase inhibitor discontinuation, with a non-compliance rate of up to 67%, potentially leading to increased cancer mortality. This study investigates estrogen receptor expression in aromatase-inhibitor-induced carpal tunnel syndrome tissues, in order to better define its etiopathogenesis and derive preventive or therapeutic measures that can improve aromatase inhibitor patient compliance. To our knowledge, there is no study on this subject in the literature. Methods: Between 2023 and 2024, we recruited 14 patients at the Jewish Hospital of Rome, including seven patients with aromatase-inhibitor-induced carpal tunnel syndrome (study group) and seven with postmenopausal idiopathic carpal tunnel syndrome (control group). Each patient was evaluated based on a clinical visit, a questionnaire, instrumental exams, and serum hormone dosages and were treated with open carpal tunnel release surgery, during which transverse carpal ligament and flexor tenosynovium samples were collected. For immunohistochemical experiments, sections were treated with anti-estrogen receptor α and anti-estrogen receptor β antibodies. Results: The immunohistochemical features in the study and control groups were similar, demonstrating that tissues affected by aromatase-inhibitor-induced carpal tunnel syndrome are targets of direct estrogen action and that estrogen deprivation is correlated with disease etiogenesis. Surgery was effective in patient treatment. Conclusions: Aromatase-inhibitor-induced carpal tunnel syndrome represents a newly defined form of the disease. This syndrome represents one of the main causes of aromatase inhibitor discontinuation, due to its negative impact on the patient’s quality of life. The identification by clinicians of aromatase inhibitor use as a possible risk factor for carpal tunnel syndrome development is of essential importance, as early diagnosis and prompt management can improve patient compliance and overall breast cancer treatment outcomes. Aging is a complex physiological process that profoundly affects the functionality of the musculoskeletal system, contributing to an increase in the incidence of diseases such as osteoporosis, osteoarthritis, and sarcopenia. Cellular senescence plays a crucial role in these degenerative processes, promoting chronic inflammation and tissue dysfunction through the senescence-associated secretory phenotype (SASP). Recently, senotherapeutics have shown promising results in improving musculoskeletal health. Natural compounds such as resveratrol, rapamycin, quercetin, curcumin, vitamin E, genistein, fisetin, and epicatechin act on key signaling pathways, offering protective effects against musculoskeletal decline. On the other hand, molecules such as dasatinib, navitoclax, UBX0101, panobinostat, and metformin have been shown to be effective in eliminating or modulating senescent cells. However, understanding the mechanisms of action, long-term safety, and bioavailability remain areas for further investigation. In this context, physical exercise emerges as an effective non-pharmacological countermeasure, capable of directly modulating cellular senescence and promoting tissue regeneration, representing an integrated strategy to combat age-related diseases. Therefore, we have provided an overview of the main anti-aging compounds and examined the potential of physical exercise as a strategy in the management of age-related musculoskeletal disorders. Further studies should focus on identifying synergistic combinations of pharmacological and non-pharmacological interventions to optimize the effectiveness of anti-aging strategies and promoting healthier musculoskeletal aging.
