The recent surge in the popularity of brachycephalic dog breeds has raised concerns about their predisposition to serious health issues linked to breed-specific morphological traits. This study examined the demographic characteristics, motivations, and awareness of owners regarding welfare issues in four brachycephalic breeds (French Bulldogs, Bulldogs, Pugs, Boston Terriers). Methods: A total of 497 owners of brachycephalic dogs examined over six years at an Italian university veterinary hospital were considered; a subset of 75 owners completed a structured questionnaire. Based on responses to a key multiple-choice question about the main reason for breed choice, owners were classified into three groups: trend-driven (aesthetics/fashion), value-oriented (intelligence/behavior), and indeterminate. Results: Gender distribution did not differ significantly compared to the overall population, but brachycephalic owners were significantly younger (p < 0.001). Value-oriented owners were significantly more likely (p < 0.01) to consult a veterinarian before acquisition and showed better understanding of typical respiratory issues, which did not affect their purchasing decision. Trend-driven owners were more influenced by public figures (p < 0.05) and less engaged in preventive care. Conclusion: Our findings highlight the need for pre-acquisition veterinary counseling. Veterinarians can also assist breeders by promoting awareness of the ethical risks of selecting extreme traits in dogs. Full article

The integration of artificial intelligence (AI) and advanced digital workflows is revolutionising full-arch implant dentistry, particularly for geriatric patients with edentulous and atrophic arches, for whom achieving both prosthetic passivity and optimal aesthetic outcomes is critical. This narrative review evaluates current challenges in intraoral scanning accuracy—such as scan distortion, angular deviation, and cross-arch misalignment—and presents how innovations like the Medit SmartX AI-guided workflow and the Scan Ladder system can significantly enhance precision in implant position registration. These technologies mitigate stitching errors by using real-time scan body recognition and auxiliary geometric references, yielding mean RMS trueness values as low as 11–13 µm, comparable to dedicated photogrammetry systems. AI-driven prosthetic design further aligns implant-supported restorations with facial symmetry and smile aesthetics, prioritising predictable midline and occlusal plane control. Early clinical data indicate that such tools can reduce prosthetic misfits to under 20 µm and lower complication rates related to passive fit, while shortening scan times by up to 30% compared to conventional workflows. This is especially valuable for elderly individuals who may not tolerate multiple lengthy adjustments. Additionally, emerging AI applications in design automation, scan validation, and patient-specific workflow adaptation continue to evolve, supporting more efficient and personalised digital prosthodontics. In summary, AI-enhanced scanning and prosthetic workflows do not merely meet functional demands but also elevate aesthetic standards in complex full-arch rehabilitations. The synergy of AI and digital dentistry presents a transformative opportunity to consistently deliver superior precision, passivity, and facial harmony for edentulous implant patients. Full article

Urban metabolism frameworks offer insight into flows of energy, materials, and services in cities, yet tree species selection is seldom treated as a metabolic indicator. In Amman, Jordan, we integrate spatial metabolic metrics to critique monocultural greening policies and demonstrate how species choices forecast long-term urban metabolic performance. Using ENVI-met 5.61 simulations, we compare Melia azedarach, Olea europaea, and Ceratonia siliqua, mainly assessing urban flow related elements like air temperature reduction, CO2 sequestration, and evapotranspiration alongside rooting depth, isoprene emissions, and biodiversity support. Melia delivers rapid cooling but shows other negatives like a low biodiversity value; Olea offers average cooling and sequestration but has allergenic pollen issues in people as a flow; Ceratonia provides scalable cooling, increased carbon uptake, and has a high ecological value. We propose a metabolic reframing of green infrastructure planning to choose urban species, guided by system feedback rather than aesthetics, to ensure long-term resilience in arid urban climates. Water scarcity challenges floriculture, which depends on quality irrigation for ornamental value. This study assessed short-term salinity tolerance in eight Asteraceae species by measuring physiological (proline levels, antioxidant enzyme activity) and morphological (plant height, flower number, and size) responses. Plants were irrigated with 0, 50, 100, or 300 mM NaCl for 10 days. Salinity significantly enhanced proline content and the activity of key antioxidant enzymes (catalase, peroxidase, and ascorbate peroxidase), reflecting the activation of stress defense mechanisms. However, these defenses failed to fully protect reproductive organs. Flower number and size were consistently more sensitive to salinity than vegetative traits, with significant reductions observed even at 50 mM NaCl. Responses varied between species, with Zinnia elegans and Calendula officinalis exhibiting pronounced sensitivity to salinity, whereas Tagetes patula showed relative tolerance, particularly under moderate stress conditions. The results show that flower structures are more vulnerable to ionic and osmotic disturbances than vegetative tissues, likely due to their higher metabolic demands and developmental sensitivity. Their heightened vulnerability underscores the need to prioritize reproductive performance when evaluating stress tolerance. Incorporating these traits into breeding programs is essential for developing salt-tolerant floriculture species that maintain aesthetic quality under limited water availability. Full article

Vegetation plays a multifaceted role in the enhancement and conservation of archaeological sites, functioning not only as an aesthetic element but also as a core component of landscape architecture practice. This review traces the historical evolution of vegetation management, though the lens of landscape architecture, highlighting its potential as a design and planning tool for historical interpretation and sustainable integration of heritage sites into broader contexts. From Romantic landscaping ideals to modern interdisciplinary conservation frameworks, the review draws on key milestones such as the Athens and Venice Charters, and examines case studies like Rome’s Passeggiata Archeologica, the Acropolis slopes, Ruffenhofen Park, and Campo Lameiro. These examples illustrate how landscape architectural approaches can use vegetation to reconstruct lost architectural forms, enhance visitor engagement, and provide ecosystem functions. The article also addresses challenges related to historical authenticity, species selection, and ecological performance, arguing for future strategies that integrate archaeological sites into dynamic, living heritage systems, through collaborative, ecologically informed design. Therapeutic Efficacy of Plant-Derived Exosomes for Advanced Scar Treatment: Quantitative Analysis Using Standardized Assessment Scales

Background: Wound healing and scar management remain significant challenges in dermatology and aesthetic medicine. Recent advances in regenerative medicine have introduced plant-derived exosome-like nanoparticles (PDENs) as potential therapeutic agents due to their bioactive properties. This study examines the clinical application of rose stem cell exosomes (RSCEs) in combination with established treatments for managing different types of scars. Methods: A case series of four patients with different scar etiologies (dog bite, hot oil burn, forehead trauma, and facial laser treatment complications) was treated with RSCEs in combination with microneedling (Dermapen 4.0, 0.2–0.4 mm depth) and/or thulium laser therapy (Lutronic Ultra MD, 8–14 J), or as a standalone topical treatment. All cases underwent sequential treatments over periods ranging from two to four months, with comprehensive photographic documentation of the progression. The efficacy was assessed through clinical photography and objective evaluation using the modified Vancouver Scar Scale (mVSS) and the Patient and Observer Scar Assessment Scale (POSAS), along with assessment of scar appearance, texture, and coloration. Results: All cases demonstrated progressive improvement throughout the treatment course. The dog bite scar showed significant objective improvement, with a 71% reduction in modified Vancouver Scar Scale score (from 7/13 to 2/13) and a 61% improvement in Patient and Observer Scar Assessment Scale scores after four combined treatments. The forehead trauma case exhibited similar outcomes, with a 71% improvement in mVSS score and 55–57% improvement in POSAS scores. The hot oil burn case displayed the most dramatic improvement, with a 78% reduction in mVSS score and over 70% improvement in POSAS scores, resulting in near-complete resolution without visible scarring. The facial laser complication case showed a 75% reduction in mVSS score and ~70% improvement in POSAS scores using only topical exosome application without device-based treatments. Clinical improvements across all cases included reduction in elevation, improved texture, decreased erythema, and better integration with surrounding skin. No adverse effects were reported in any of the cases. Conclusions: This preliminary case series suggests that plant-derived exosome-like nanoparticles, specifically rose stem cell exosomes (RSCEs), may enhance scar treatment outcomes when combined with microneedling and laser therapy, or even as a standalone topical treatment. The documented objective improvements, measured by standardized scar assessment scales, along with clinical enhancements in scar appearance, texture, and coloration across different scar etiologies—dog bite, burn, traumatic injury, and iatrogenic laser damage—suggest that this approach may offer a valuable addition to the current armamentarium of scar management strategies. Notably, the successful treatment of laser-induced complications using only topical exosome application demonstrates the versatility and potential of this therapeutic modality. Full article

Street view imagery has become a vital tool for assessing urban street greenery, with the Green View Index (GVI) serving as the predominant metric. However, while GVI effectively quantifies overall greenery, it fails to capture the nuanced, human-scale experience of urban greenery. This study introduces the Front-Facing Green View Index (FFGVI), a metric designed to reflect the perspective of pedestrians traversing urban streets. The FFGVI computation involves three key steps: (1) calculating azimuths for road points, (2) retrieving front-facing street view images, and (3) applying semantic segmentation to identify green pixels in street view imagery. Building on this, this study proposes the Street Canyon Green View Index (SCGVI), a novel approach for identifying boulevards that evoke perceptions of comfort, spaciousness, and aesthetic quality akin to room-like streetscapes. Applying these indices to a case study in Nanjing, China, this study shows that (1) FFGVI exhibited a strong correlation with GVI (R = 0.88), whereas the association between SCGVI and GVI was marginally weaker (R = 0.78). GVI tends to overestimate perceived greenery due to the influence of lateral views dominated by side-facing vegetation; (2) FFGVI provides a more human-centered perspective, mitigating biases introduced by sampling point locations and obstructions such as large vehicles; and (3) SCGVI effectively identifies prominent boulevards that contribute to a positive urban experience. These findings suggest that FFGVI and SCGVI are valuable metrics for informing urban planning, enhancing urban tourism, and supporting greening strategies at the street level. Full article

Background/Objectives: The gold standard of treatment for both melanoma and non-melanoma skin cancers is wide surgical resection to obtain oncological radicality, which occasionally results in functional or aesthetic impairment, potentially affecting quality of life. Despite the increased complexity of the technique, extended duration of hospitalization, and prolonged surgical operative times, microsurgery can facilitate the reconstruction of locally invasive skin cancers following ablative surgery and may yield superior functional and aesthetic outcomes. Consequently, microsurgical reconstruction is more likely to be necessary if a large skin tumor requires excision. However, the impact of this extensive and complex procedure on patients with skin cancer has not yet been fully elucidated. The objective of this research was to critically analyze the utilization of free flap reconstruction subsequent to skin cancer therapy. Through a comprehensive examination of published data, this study aimed to assess the potential benefits and drawbacks associated with this reconstructive approach. Methods: A systematic review of studies that were published from January 2004 to May 2024 was conducted using the MEDLINE online database search. To present an evidence summary and provide a systematic approach and quality assessment, the GRADE® rating was applied to the results. Results: This review summarizes the oncological and clinical data, including previous interventions, adjuvant and neoadjuvant therapies, nodal status, distant metastasis, and follow-up time. Surgical outcome parameters such as healing time, flap survival, revision rate success, and minor and major complications were documented. Along with the findings, a quality assessment of the studies was also provided. Conclusions: This systematic review underscores the extensive use and efficacy of microsurgery for reconstruction after skin cancer excision; however, the literature remains limited by inconsistent reporting of oncological outcomes and the lack of a standardized approach to evaluate the impact of free flap reconstruction on both immediate and long-term cancer-specific results. Style transfer technology has seen substantial attention in image synthesis, notably in applications like oil painting, digital printing, and Chinese landscape painting. However, it is often difficult to generate migrated images that retain the essence of paper-cutting art and have strong visual appeal when trying to apply the unique style of Chinese paper-cutting art to style transfer. Therefore, this paper proposes a new method for Chinese paper-cutting style transformation based on the Transformer, aiming at realizing the efficient transformation of Chinese paper-cutting art styles. Specifically, the network consists of a frequency-domain mixture block and a multi-level feature contrastive learning module. The frequency-domain mixture block explores spatial and frequency-domain interaction information, integrates multiple attention windows along with frequency-domain features, preserves critical details, and enhances the effectiveness of style conversion. To further embody the symmetrical structures and hollowed hierarchical patterns intrinsic to Chinese paper-cutting, the multi-level feature contrastive learning module is designed based on a contrastive learning strategy. This module maximizes mutual information between multi-level transferred features and content features, improves the consistency of representations across different layers, and thus accentuates the unique symmetrical aesthetics and artistic expression of paper-cutting. Extensive experimental results demonstrate that the proposed method outperforms existing state-of-the-art approaches in both qualitative and quantitative evaluations. Additionally, we created a Chinese paper-cutting dataset that, although modest in size, represents an important initial step towards enriching existing resources. This dataset provides valuable training data and a reference benchmark for future research in this field. Full article

Oncoplastic breast-conserving surgery (OBCS), or oncoplastic surgery, has revolutionized the surgical management of breast cancer by integrating oncologic principles with reconstructive techniques to optimize both cancer control and aesthetic outcomes following breast-conserving surgery (BCS). Since its inception in the 1980s, the field has evolved significantly, incorporating a range of volume displacement and volume replacement strategies to restore breast contour after partial mastectomy. This review explores the current practices and key surgical considerations of OBCS. It highlights the role of preoperative multidisciplinary planning, patient selection, anatomical and vascular knowledge, and intraoperative technique in optimizing results. Barriers to access—including disparities in training, insurance, and geographic availability—are addressed, alongside efforts by professional societies like the American Society of Breast Surgeons (ASBS) to standardize definitions and practices. The review also outlines strategies for minimizing complications and enhancing oncologic, reconstructive, and patient-reported outcomes. By offering a comprehensive framework for clinical decision-making, this paper aims to support broader adoption and refinement of OBCS as a standard component of breast cancer care. Full article

Cinematic aesthetic values have not been studied as thoroughly as those in music and the visual arts. Three hypotheses for these values are that they are like those of artistic paintings, that they emphasize the spatial coherence of the optical flow, and that they are temporally smooth. Here, we test these hypotheses and investigate other candidate aesthetic values by comparing the statistics of narrative movies and those obtained spontaneously. We perform these tests by using narrative movies from the early stages of cinematic history because these films are simple. We statistically compare these films with spontaneous movies of scenes from daily life. These statistical comparisons do not support the first hypothesis for early movies. The comparisons show that symmetry, balance, and image complexity (normalized Shannon entropy) are not different in early and spontaneous movies. For similar reasons, our data do not support the spatial coherence of early-movie optical flows as having cinematic aesthetic functions. However, in support of the third hypothesis, the temporal smoothness of luminance, but not of motions, appears to have cinematic aesthetic value. The data also uncovered two other cinematic aesthetic value candidates in both statistical surprise and spatial and temporal complexities. We discuss these candidates, pointing out similarities to music and the importance of film editing. Full article

Traditional park designs no longer meet the diverse needs of young users amid rising visitor numbers and environmental challenges. Exploring the impact of mountain city parks on youth is crucial, yet localised studies on their spatial perceptions in such unique environments are lacking. Landscape design based on spatial perception evaluation offers a promising approach for renewing mountain parks to address these complex needs. Therefore, a pilot study was conducted in Chongqing’s Pipa Mountain and Eling Parks, involving questionnaire surveys and on-site spatial data collection. Using principal component analysis to select the visual and auditory indicators most related to environmental satisfaction in the overall park and various types of gathering spaces, the results showed that the first principal component of the visual environment in the entrance platform and key nodes (r = 0.41, r = 0.45), as well as the first principal component of the auditory environment in the entrance platform, path platform, and elevated points (r = 0.67, r = 0.85, r = 0.68), all showed significant positive correlations with environmental satisfaction (p < 0.01). Moreover, naturalness and aesthetics were identified as the main factors influencing environmental satisfaction. A random forest model analysed nonlinear relationships, ranking spatial factors by importance. Simultaneously, SHAP analysis highlighted the effects of key factors like elevation changes, green view index, colour diversity, and natural elements. Elevation changes were positively correlated with satisfaction at elevated points but showed a negative correlation in the overall park environment and other gathering spaces. This study explored space-perception dynamics in mountain city parks, proposing strategies to improve environmental quality in various gathering spaces and the park. These findings support creating liveable mountainous environments and guide “human-centred health,” quality enhancement, and sustainable development in renewing mountain city parks. Full article

Background: Nasal reconstruction requires a balance between aesthetic and functional restoration. Recent advances in three-dimensional (3D) printing have introduced new approaches to this field, enabling precise, patient-specific interventions. This review explores the applications, benefits, and challenges of integrating 3D printing in nasal reconstruction. Methods: A literature search was conducted using PubMed, Scopus, and Web of Science to identify studies on 3D printing in nasal reconstruction. Peer-reviewed articles and clinical trials were analyzed to assess the impact of 3D-printed models, implants, and bioengineered scaffolds. Results: 3D printing facilitates the creation of anatomical models, surgical guides, and implants, enhancing surgical precision and patient outcomes. Techniques such as stereolithography (SLA) and selective laser sintering (SLS) enable high-resolution, biocompatible constructs using materials like polylactic acid, titanium, and hydroxyapatite. Computational fluid dynamics (CFD) tools improve surgical planning by optimizing nasal airflow. Studies show that 3D-printed guides reduce operative time and improve symmetry. Emerging bioprinting techniques integrating autologous cells offer promise for tissue regeneration. Challenges and Future Directions: Challenges include high costs, imaging limitations, regulatory hurdles, and limited vascularization in bioprinted constructs. Future research should focus on integrating bioactive materials, artificial intelligence-assisted design, and regulatory standardization. Conclusions: 3D printing offers specific advantages in nasal reconstruction, improving precision and outcomes in selected cases. Addressing current limitations through technological and regulatory advancements will further its clinical integration, potentially enhancing reconstructive surgery techniques. Full article

Lithium disilicate ceramics (LDSs) are widely used in restorative dentistry for their excellent aesthetic and mechanical properties. Variants like zirconia-reinforced lithium silicate (ZLS) and advanced lithium disilicate (ALD) were developed to enhance these characteristics. However, differences in their physical and optical properties, as well as the influence of processing techniques (heat pressing vs. CAD-CAM), remain unclear. This study aimed to evaluate the physical and aesthetic properties of LDS, ZLS, and ALD ceramics. A systematic review and meta-analysis following PRISMA guidelines were conducted. Studies published in the last ten years were retrieved from PubMed, Web of Science, Scopus, Cochrane, and Scielo. The inclusion criteria encompassed in vitro studies analyzing LDS, ZLS, and ALD ceramics with quantitative data on mechanical and aesthetic properties. Meta-analyses were performed using a random-effects model, with subgroup analyses based on ceramic type and processing technique. Twenty-two studies met the inclusion criteria. Meta-analyses showed significant differences in flexural strength, hardness, surface roughness, wear, and translucency. The processing technique influenced these properties, with CAD-CAM materials exhibiting distinct performance compared to heat-pressed ceramics. Publication bias was assessed using Egger’s test and the Trim and Fill method, and heterogeneity via meta-regression. LDS showed the highest fracture resistance and least wear, while ALD had greater roughness depth. Heat pressing enhanced hardness and reduced roughness, whereas CAD-CAM improved flexural strength. Considering these findings and study limitations, LDS appears the most suitable option for clinical use due to its superior mechanical performance. Full article

Background/Objectives: Systemic therapy with hedgehog pathway inhibitors (HHIs) and anti-programmed cell death protein 1 (PD-1) antibodies represent the first- and second-line treatment options for advanced basal cell carcinoma (aBCC), respectively. A shift in the treatment paradigms toward the neoadjuvant approach is gaining increasing interest in aBCC management, whereby prior systemic therapy followed by surgery is likely to yield more favorable outcomes. The aim of this narrative review is to summarize the current evidence on systemic treatment options and the neoadjuvant approach for aBCC management. Methods: We performed a non-systematic review of the literature based on PubMed as search engine. Results: The pivotal phase II trials ERIVANCE and BOLT investigated the efficacy and safety profile of vismodegib and sonidegib, respectively, with reported objective response rates (ORRs) of 60.3% and 56% in laBCC patients, respectively. The pivotal phase II trial NCT03132636 investigated the efficacy and safety profile of cemiplimab in patients who progressed or were intolerant to prior HHI therapy, with an ORR of 32.1% in laBCC patients. Real-life studies confirmed the effectiveness and safety profile of HHI and anti-PD-1 immunotherapy. Several phase I/II clinical trials are currently investigating HHIs and immune-checkpoint inhibitors in the neoadjuvant setting followed by surgery for aBCC patients, with the aim of providing more favorable treatment outcomes, especially when upfront surgery would result in functional and/or aesthetic sequelae. Conclusions: Advanced BCC treatment is challenging, and the neoadjuvant approach followed by surgery is expected to reduce surgical complexity, increase tissue preservation, and improve patients’ satisfaction.
