Background and Objectives: The aim of our study was to evaluate in an ex vivo setting the impact of the holmium laser lithotripsy over the temperature of the irrigation fluid. Materials and Methods: We recorded temperature changes in an ex vivo porcine model during laser activation using dusting (18 Hz, 0.6 J, 10.8 W) and fragmenting settings (8 Hz, 2 J, 16 W). The temperature was recorded for each of these modes in three settings: without irrigation or access sheath, with irrigation but no access sheath, and with irrigation and a 10/12 F access sheath in place. Results: Using dusting settings, the maximum recorded temperatures were 42.3 degrees Celsius (no irrigation, no sheath), 37.3 degrees Celsius (with irrigation but no access sheath) and 36.2 degrees Celsius (with irrigation and access sheath). In fragmenting mode, the maximum recorded temperatures were 52 degrees Celsius (no irrigation, no sheath), 43.1 degrees Celsius (with irrigation but no access sheath), and 42.9 degrees Celsius (with irrigation and access sheath). Conclusions: In certain conditions (no irrigation, more watts) the temperature may rise to dangerous levels. However, in closer to real-life settings (with irrigation and especially when ureteral access sheaths are employed) the magnitude of this effect is limited, making flexible intrarenal laser lithotripsy a reasonably safe procedure. From Desalination to Governance: A Comparative Study of Water Reuse Strategies in Southern European Hospitality

As climate change intensified water scarcity in Southern Europe, tourism-dependent regions such as Portugal’s Algarve faced growing pressure to adapt their water management systems. This study investigated how hotel groups in the Algarve have adopted and communicated water reuse technologies—specifically desalination and greywater recycling—under environmental, institutional, and reputational constraints. A comparative qualitative case study was conducted involving three hotel groups—Vila Vita Parc, Pestana Group, and Vila Galé—selected through purposive sampling based on organizational capacity and technology adoption stage. The analysis was supported by a supplementary mini-case from Mallorca, Spain. Publicly accessible documents, including sustainability reports, media coverage, and policy frameworks, were thematically coded using organizational environmental behavior theory and the OECD Principles on Water Governance. The results demonstrated that (1) higher organizational capacity was associated with greater maturity in water reuse implementation; (2) communication transparency increased alongside technological advancement; and (3) early-stage adopters encountered stronger financial, regulatory, and operational barriers. These findings culminated in the development of the Maturity–Communication–Governance (MCG) Framework, which elucidates how internal resources, stakeholder signaling, and institutional alignment influence sustainable infrastructure uptake. This research offered policy recommendations to scale water reuse in tourism through financial incentives, regulatory simplification, and public–private partnerships. The study contributed to the literature on sustainable tourism and decentralized climate adaptation, aligning with UN Sustainable Development Goals 6.4, 12.6, and 13. Full article

Climate change presents urgent and complex challenges to agricultural sustainability and food security, particularly in regions reliant on resource-intensive staple crops. Smart agriculture—through the integration of crop modeling, satellite remote sensing, and artificial intelligence (AI)—offers data-driven strategies to enhance productivity, optimize input use, and mitigate greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. This study introduces Farmdee-Mesook, a mobile-first smart agriculture platform designed specifically for Thai rice farmers. The platform leverages AquaCrop simulation, open-access satellite data, and localized agronomic models to deliver real-time, field-specific recommendations. Usability-focused design and no-cost access facilitate its widespread adoption, particularly among smallholders. Empirical results show that platform users achieved yield increases of up to 37%, reduced agrochemical costs by 59%, and improved water productivity by 44% under alternate wetting and drying (AWD) irrigation schemes. These outcomes underscore the platform’s role as a scalable, cost-effective solution for operationalizing climate-smart agriculture. Farmdee-Mesook demonstrates that digital technologies, when contextually tailored and institutionally supported, can serve as critical enablers of climate adaptation and sustainable agricultural transformation. This study aimed to assess the vulnerability of transportation networks and identify critical nodes and regions within a multimodal transportation system. While previous research has predominantly focused on centrality measures to evaluate node importance from an accessibility perspective, this study emphasizes the need to evaluate network vulnerability comprehensively in response to rapid socioeconomic changes. We propose a vulnerability function that integrates network topology and connectivity. First, we defined the vulnerability of individual nodes and regional clusters. Second, we developed a methodology to evaluate the defined vulnerabilities systematically. Finally, we applied the framework to Korea’s multimodal transportation network, conducting a case study to validate the effectiveness and applicability of the proposed function. Conclusively, this study presents a comprehensive vulnerability assessment framework for multimodal transportation networks, offering valuable insights to support robust decision making for enhancing sustainable and efficient transportation systems. This study assesses the risk of geoheritage degradation along a low-lying coastal stretch Okin the municipalities of Macau, Guamaré, and Galinhos, located in the central portion of Rio Grande do Norte’s northern coastline, Brazil. Twelve geosites, inventoried based on their scientific value, susceptibility to degradation, and representation of diverse coastal processes and landforms, were numerically assessed for their degradation risk. The methodology comprised 11 sub-criteria grouped into three main criteria: natural vulnerability, anthropogenic vulnerability, and public use. The results indicate that all 12 geosites in the study area are subject to moderate to high degradation risk, with the highest levels observed in those with the most evident signs of human use and intervention. To mitigate these impacts, the implementation of access restrictions or protective measures by local authorities is recommended. Furthermore, raising awareness among local communities about the environmental consequences of their activities and the geosites’ role in promoting sustainability is essential. Given the region’s heightened vulnerability to sea level oscillations, future assessments should incorporate climate change implications into the assessment criteria. Full article

Sporadic Parkinson’s Disease (PD) affects 3% of people over 65 years of age. People are living longer, thanks in large part to improvements in global health technology and health access for non-neurological diseases. Consequently, neurological diseases of senescence, such as PD, are representing an ever-increasing share of global disease burden. There is an intensifying research focus on the processes that underlie these conditions in the hope that neurological decay may be arrested at the earliest time point. The concept of neuronal death linked to ageing- neural senescence- first emerged in the 1800s. By the late 20th century, it was recognized that neurodegeneration was common to all ageing human brains, but in most cases, this process did not lead to clinical disease during life. Conditions such as PD are the result of accelerated neurodegeneration in particular brain foci. In the case of PD, degeneration of the substantia nigra pars compacta (SNpc) is especially implicated. Why neural degeneration accelerates in these particular regions remains a point of contention, though current evidence implicates a complex interplay between a vast array of neuronal cell functions, bioenergetic failure, and a dysfunctional brain immunological response. Their complexity is a considerable barrier to disease modification trials, which seek to intercept these maladaptive cell processes. This paper reviews current evidence in the domain of neurodegeneration in Parkinson’s disease, focusing on alpha-synuclein accumulation and deposition and the role of oxidative stress and inflammation in progressive brain changes. Recent approaches to disease modification are discussed, including the prevention or reversal of alpha-synuclein accumulation and deposition, modification of oxidative stress, alteration of maladaptive innate immune processes and reactive cascades, and regeneration of lost neurons using stem cells and growth factors. The limitations of past research methodologies are interrogated, including the difficulty of recruiting patients in the clinically quiescent prodromal phase of sporadic Parkinson’s disease. Recommendations are provided for future studies seeking to identify novel therapeutics with disease-modifying properties. Full article

Insect metamorphosis is a complex developmental process regulated by hormonal signaling and gene transcription. To elucidate its transcriptional regulatory mechanisms, we examined chromatin accessibility dynamics during metamorphosis in two holometabolous insects, Harmonia axyridis and Drosophila melanogaster, using ATAC-seq. Our analysis revealed distinct stage-specific chromatin accessibility patterns, with peak accessibility during the prepupal stage in H. axyridis and the wandering larval to prepupal transition in D. melanogaster. Through analysis of differential accessibility regions (DARs), we identified enrichment of metamorphosis-related processes including cell morphogenesis, tissue remodeling, and hormone signaling pathways via Gene Ontology and KEGG pathway analyses. Integration of chromatin accessibility with gene expression data revealed 608 conserved genes exhibiting coordinated accessibility and expression changes across both species. Additionally, we constructed a regulatory network centered around four key transcription factors (dsx, E93, REPTOR, and Sox14) that form core regulatory modules controlling metamorphosis. This study provides novel insights into the epigenetic landscape of insect metamorphosis and establishes a foundation for understanding the transcriptional regulatory mechanisms governing this critical developmental process. Standalone photovoltaic (PV) systems offer a viable path to decentralized energy access but face limitations during periods of low solar irradiance. While batteries provide short-term storage, their capacity constraints often restrict the use of surplus energy, highlighting the need for long-duration solutions. Green hydrogen, generated via proton exchange membrane (PEM) electrolyzers, offers a scalable alternative. This study proposes a stochastic energy management framework that leverages a Markov decision process (MDP) to coordinate PV generation, battery storage, and hydrogen production under variable irradiance and uncertain load demand. The strategy dynamically allocates power flows, ensuring system stability and efficient energy utilization. Real-time weather data from Goiás, Brazil, is used to simulate system behavior under realistic conditions. Compared to the conventional perturb and observe (P&O) technique, the proposed method significantly improves system performance, achieving a 99.9% average efficiency (vs. 98.64%) and a drastically lower average tracking error of 0.3125 (vs. 9.8836). This enhanced tracking accuracy ensures faster convergence to the maximum power point, even during abrupt load changes, thereby increasing the effective use of solar energy. As a direct consequence, green hydrogen production is maximized while energy curtailment is minimized. The results confirm the robustness of the MDP-based control, demonstrating improved responsiveness, reduced downtime, and enhanced hydrogen yield, thus supporting sustainable energy conversion in off-grid environments. The recent evolution of the space industry, commonly referred to as New Space, has changed the way space missions are conceived, developed, and executed. In contrast to traditional approaches, the current paradigm emphasizes accessibility, commercial competitiveness, and rapid and sustainable innovation. This study proposes a research methodology for selecting relevant literature to identify the key design drivers and associated enablers that characterize the New Space context from an engineering design perspective. These elements are then organized into three categories: the evolution of traditional drivers, emerging manufacturing and integration practices, and sustainability and technology independence. This categorization highlights their role and relevance, providing a baseline for the development of systems for New Space missions. The results are further contextualized within three major application domains, namely Low Earth Orbit (LEO) small satellite constellations, operations and servicing in space, and space exploration, to illustrate their practical role in engineering space systems. By linking high-level industry trends to concrete design choices, this work aims to support the early design phases of New Space innovative systems and promote a more integrated approach between strategic objectives and technical development. Psychedelics and New Materialism: Challenging the Science–Spirituality Binary and the Onto-Epistemological Order of Modernity

This essay argues for the reciprocal benefits of joining the new theories of matter emerging out of critical posthumanism and the psychedelic drugs currently experiencing a so-called “renaissance” in global north societies. While the former’s twin emphasis on relationality and embodiment is perfectly suited to capture and ground the ontological, epistemological, and ethical implications of psychedelic experiences of interconnectedness and transformation, these substances are in turn powerful companions through which to enact a “posthuman phenomenology” that helps us with the urgent task to “access, amplify, and describe” our deep imbrication with our more-than-human environments. In other words, I argue that while the “new materialism” emerging out of posthumanism can help elaborate a psychedelic rationality, psychedelics can in turn operate as educators in materiality. It is from this materialist perspective that we can best make sense of psychedelics’ often touted potential for social transformation and the enduring suspicion that they are somehow at odds with the “ontoepistemological order” of modernity. From this point of view, I contend that a crucial critical move is to push against the common trope that this opposition is best expressed as a turn from the narrow scientific and “consumerist materialism” of modern Western societies to more expansive “spiritual” worldviews. Pushing against this science-–spirituality binary, which in fact reproduces modern “indivi/dualism” by confining psychedelic experience inside our heads, I argue instead that what is in fact needed to think through and actualize such potentials is an increased attention to our material transcorporeality. In a nutshell, if we want psychedelics to inform social change, we must be more, not less, materialist—albeit by redefining matter in a rather “weird”, non-reductive way and by redefining consciousness as embodied. By the end of the essay, attaching psychedelics to a new materialism will enable us to formulate a “material spirituality” that establishes psychedelics’ political value less in an idealistic or cognitive “politics of consciousness” and more in a “materialization of critique”. The climate crisis poses profound risks to present and future generations. Nonetheless, the perspectives of children and young people internationally, and more specifically in Brazil, remain underexplored. Based on a multi-discipline literature review on climate anxiety and nature (dis)connectedness, the hypothesis is that the effects and symptoms of increasing (dis)connection with natural environments have short-, medium-, and long-term consequences. Access to natural spaces is a vital response to counteract the negative impacts of climate change. This article discusses findings from a study conducted in urban Brazil with 200 young people aged 12 to 18 years old, with the aim of addressing three research questions from ten questions that comprised the complete survey. The major research questions were as follows: 1. ‘Climate change worries me’: How do you relate to this statement? 2. How does climate change affect you?, and 3. Do you think some young people are more affected by climate change than others? The results show that young people care about and are preoccupied with climate change, especially when they reflect on their futures and the future generations. Although young participants are deeply concerned about climate change and feel its effects them personally in the form of anxiety, fear, and insecurity, they often lack clear pathways for contributing to broader environmental efforts beyond individual actions. These findings highlight an urgent need to foster community-based approaches and enhance education and resources for enlarging and improving youth engagement, especially to rethink the everyday strategies addressing these challenges, and to foster new paradigms of interaction with the natural world based on (re)connection with natural spaces. The correlation between climate anxiety and nature (dis)connection offers an approach that is still little explored, especially concerning children and young people. Full article

Background/Objectives: Colorectal cancer is a leading cause of cancer-related death worldwide, with rising incidence in younger adults. Unhealthy diets high in red and processed meat and low in fiber are key modifiable risk factors, highlighting the need for preventive nutritional strategies targeting CRC through dietary interventions. Methods: A one-day sample diet for colorectal cancer prevention, consisting of fiber-rich meals excluding red meat and incorporating whole grains, legumes, vegetables, fruits, nuts, and lean protein alternatives (such as fish and poultry), was developed. Its acceptability was assessed in a cross-sectional study using an online questionnaire among healthy Romanian adults aged 18–50, with a total of 395 included participants. Results: Of the 395 respondents meeting the inclusion criteria (aged 18–50, no cancer or chronic gastrointestinal disorders), 63.5% were females, predominantly urban (90.1%), and highly educated. Mean age was 32.4 years; mean BMI was 25.07 kg/m2. The proposed colorectal cancer-preventive diet was rated as “quite attractive” and “very attractive” by 74.9% of participants. All meals received high ratings, with dinner and the first snack being most favored. Most respondents (77.2%) found the diet satisfying and the satiety level and energy adequate, and 90.4% were willing to adopt it at least a few times per week. Financial accessibility was affirmed by 77.2% of the respondents. However, 61.8% reported difficulty eliminating red meat consumption. Female participants rated the diet significantly more attractive than males did (p = 0.041). Willingness to adopt the diet strongly correlated with higher acceptability (p < 0.0001), while BMI and education level showed no significant effect. Conclusions: The proposed colorectal cancer-preventive diet was well accepted by Romanian adults aged 18–50, with higher receptivity among women and those with higher education; willingness to adopt the diet at least a few days per week was high, especially among those psychologically ready for dietary change, while key barriers included red meat reduction and perceived cost, underscoring the need for gender-sensitive, culturally adapted interventions and further research on long-term adherence and clinical impact. Despite recent advances in the treatment of obesity, lifestyle medicine remains foundational to the treatment of individuals with obesity, regardless of the modality chosen by the patient with the guidance of the clinician they are working with, including in conjunction with, as appropriate, anti-obesity medications and metabolic surgery. Lifestyle medicine involves the use of diet, exercise, sleep, stress, and other lifestyle modalities in the treatment of disease. Clinicians and health systems should, after a patient-centered discussion with the patient, do their best to ensure access to lifestyle treatments. Gold standard guidelines recommend intensive, multicomponent lifestyle change programs for obesity treatments with evidence-based diet and exercise counseling and established, theoretically driven behavior change components. Clinicians treating obesity should be aware of their own biases, make efforts to reduce stigmatizing experiences in their practice, and address weight stigma in their treatment plans as needed. A variety of dietary patterns can be used to support patients with obesity, and clinicians should make evidence-based but patient-centered recommendations that aim to maximize adherence. Diet and exercise can play an important role in reducing the side effects of treatment and optimizing outcomes in weight loss, attenuating the effects of metabolic adaptation, and weight maintenance. Exercise should be increased gradually to reduce injury with a goal of 200–300 min (approximately 3.3–5 h) of moderate to vigorous intensity exercise per week to maximize weight maintenance effects with exercise prescriptions customized to patients risks. A variety of practice models can be leveraged along with the use of an interdisciplinary team to provide lifestyle medicine care for those with obesity. Full article

Amman’s rapid population growth and sprawling urbanization have resulted in car-centric, fragmented neighborhoods that lack social cohesion and are vulnerable to the impacts of climate change. This study reframes walkability as a climate adaptation strategy, demonstrating how pedestrian-oriented spatial planning can reduce vehicle emissions, mitigate urban heat island effects, and enhance the resilience of green infrastructure in peri-urban contexts. Using Deir Ghbar, a rapidly developing marginal area on Amman’s western edge, as a case study, we combine objective walkability metrics (street connectivity and residential and retail density) with GIS-based spatial regression analysis to examine relationships with residents’ sense of community. Employing a quantitative, correlational research design, we assess walkability using a composite objective walkability index, calculated from the land-use mix, street connectivity, retail density, and residential density. Our results reveal that higher residential density and improved street connectivity significantly strengthen social cohesion, whereas low-density zones reinforce spatial and socioeconomic disparities. Furthermore, the findings highlight the potential of targeted green infrastructure interventions, such as continuous street tree canopies and permeable pavements, to enhance pedestrian comfort and urban ecological functions. By visualizing spatial patterns and correlating built-environment attributes with community outcomes, this research provides actionable insights for policymakers and urban planners. These strategies contribute directly to several Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly SDG 11 (Sustainable Cities and Communities) and SDG 13 (Climate Action), by fostering more inclusive, connected, and climate-resilient neighborhoods. Deir Ghbar emerges as a model for scalable, GIS-driven spatial planning in rural and marginal peri-urban areas throughout Jordan and similar regions facing accelerated urban transitions. By correlating walkability metrics with community outcomes, this study operationalizes SDGs 11 and 13, offering a replicable framework for climate-resilient urban planning in arid regions. The dynamic phosphorylation of the human RNA Pol II CTD establishes a code applicable to all eukaryotic transcription processes. However, the ability of these specific post-translational modifications to convey molecular signals through structural changes remains unclear. We previously explained that each gene can be modeled as a combination of n circuits connected in parallel. RNA Pol II accesses these circuits and, through a series of pulses, matches the resonance frequency of the DNA qubits, enabling it to extract genetic information and quantum teleport it. Negatively charged phosphates react under RNA Pol II catalysis, which increases the electron density on the deoxyribose acceptor carbon (2’C in the DNA sugar backbone). The phosphorylation effect on the stability of a carbon radical connects tyrosine to the nitrogenous base, while the subsequent pulses link the protein to molecular water through hydrogen bonds. The selective activation of inert C(sp3)–H bonds begins by reading the quantum information stored in the nitrogenous bases. The coupling of hydrogen proton transfer with electron transfer in water generates a supercurrent, which is explained by the correlation of pairs of the same type of fermions exchanging a boson. All these changes lead to the formation of a molecular protein–DNA–water transcriptional condensate. Full article
