Background: Reliable judging is essential to the fairness of elite boxing, yet inter-judge reliability under the current World Boxing 10-Point Must Scoring System remains largely unexplored. This study aimed to evaluate inter-judge reliability across rounds and weight categories at the 2025 World Boxing Championships. Methods: A retrospective observational analysis included 94 men’s bouts in the 60 kg (n = 42), 75 kg (n = 23), and 90+ kg (n = 29) categories. Judge-level round scores were analysed using linear mixed-effects variance-component models, with bout-round target and judge identity specified as random effects. Reliability was estimated for individual judge ratings (Rsingle) and an aggregate measurement based on five judge ratings (Rpanel(5)). Pairwise differences across rounds and weight categories were evaluated using bout-level bootstrap procedures with Holm adjustment for multiple testing. Results: Across all bouts, Rsingle was 0.617 (95% CI: 0.521–0.693) in Round 1, 0.634 (95% CI: 0.539–0.709) in Round 2, and 0.687 (95% CI: 0.597–0.754) in Round 3. The corresponding Rpanel(5) estimates were consistently higher at 0.889 (95% CI: 0.845–0.919), 0.897 (95% CI: 0.854–0.924), and 0.916 (95% CI: 0.881–0.939), respectively. No statistically significant differences in reliability were detected across rounds or between weight categories after Holm adjustment. Overall, 98.2% of judge-round scores were 10:9 and 68.9% of bouts decided by judges’ scores ended in unanimous 5:0 decisions. Conclusions: Reliability was consistently higher when five judge ratings were aggregated than when individual judge ratings were considered. No statistically significant evidence of systematic differences in reliability across rounds or between the examined weight categories was detected. Full article

Curling is a strategic sport in which shot decisions involve both expected rewards and inherent risks; expected-score distributions (ESDs)—probability distributions over possible final scores—capture this uncertainty as a risk-aware strategic indicator. Although unified frameworks predicting ESDs across all shots have been proposed, their internal behavior and learned output characteristics have not been systematically examined. We construct an all-shot ESD prediction framework grounded entirely in real-match board configurations drawn from World Curling Federation championship events and conduct a shot-wise analysis along two complementary axes: accuracy, the model’s reproduction of its training targets, and plausibility, the validity of those targets at aggregate and in-match scales. Accuracy degrades monotonically with shot number; only shot 16 admits comparison with an independent reference, while intermediate-shot labels are bootstrap rollouts of the next-shot model. An independent ground-truth probe at the first backward step (shot 15,500 boards × 95 contexts) bounds the consequence of this bootstrap structure: the resulting deviation is a small selection-induced hammer-underestimation bias common to both FiLM and concatenation chains, whose magnitude is more than an order of magnitude larger than the FiLM chain versus concatenation chain stage difference, and full multi-step verification beyond the first step is structurally out of reach. Within this scope the aggregate ESD shares the gross shape of the empirical end-score distribution and the qualitative hammer/non-hammer ordering, with a hammer-favorable offset attributed—after disentangling intent from execution on the shot-percentage 100% subset—to a label execution-noise envelope that is tighter than the realized play of top-tier matches. Within real matches the chain responds smoothly to each delivered stone and, at the directly validated terminal shot, assigns mean probability 0.710.72 to the realized end score under intended execution (against 0.28 for a marginal-frequency baseline), transferring from senior to junior populations. The framework is best read as an internally coherent chain anchored to a directly validated final-shot calibration, statistically plausible under intended execution with a clear boundary at execution failure. Two structural limitations remain: rare high-magnitude outcomes are scarce in real data and produce a heavy upper tail of accuracy errors, and a single fixed execution-noise envelope that is tighter than top-tier realized play accounts for the aggregate hammer-side offset and motivates recalibration against real-match execution statistics. In Olympic-style weightlifting males outperform females and heavier weightlifters lift more weight than athletes with lighter body mass. Traditional ranking models in weightlifting are based on total weight lifted and do not permit direct comparison of individual lift performances across body mass and sex. The aim of this study was to model performance in the snatch and clean and jerk and to develop a unified ranking system for comparisons across body mass and sex. Data from 3412 performances at IWF Senior World Championships and Olympics (2019–2025) were analyzed. The median sex gap was 30.7% for the snatch and 29.3% for the clean and jerk, with smaller differences at lower body mass. Peak performance occurred at 25.4 years for both lifts. Generalized additive models accounting for location, scale, and shape of the performance distribution were used to estimate standardized scores. Scaling individual lifts onto a common metric allows for meaningful evaluation of athletes even in the presence of unsuccessful attempts in one type of lift and can illustrate performance profiles. This approach supports performance assessment, athlete monitoring, and mixed-team rankings which is particularly relevant in emerging competition formats that emphasize lift-specific contributions and mixed-sex participation. Background and Objectives: Water polo (WP) is a high-intensity, intermittent aquatic team sport that has been extensively investigated within sports science. While contemporary literature has examined the body composition and morphological characteristics of elite and international WP players, this study aimed to define the general body composition profile of world-class WP players and determine position-specific differences. Methods: The study involved 72 national team players from Serbia, Croatia, Greece, and Italy who participated in the Olympic Games, World Championships, or European Championships. Participants’ body composition was measured using the InBody 720 multichannel bioimpedance method. Ten different variables were examined to assess body structure regarding contractile and ballast components. Results: MANOVA revealed statistically significant differences in body composition across playing positions (Wilks’ lambda = 0.239, p < 0.000, η2p = 0.402). The variables that had the greatest impact on the difference were: body mass, body fat and body mass index with the 47.0, 44.4, and 43.7% of explained total variance of the impact on the differences (p = 0.000), respectively. Conclusions: world-class WP players assigned to different playing positions differ significantly in body composition. These positional profiles should be considered in talent identification, selection procedures, training, and nutritional strategies to optimize performance models, considering the future evolution of the game at the highest competitive level. Coaches could use this information to initially select players for different specific positions based on anthropometric and body composition criteria. Full article

Frisbee has gained increasing popularity and is characterized by high-intensity running, rapid changes in direction, jumping, and indirect physical contact, exposing players to a risk of injury. This study aimed to determine the epidemiology of musculoskeletal injuries in frisbee athletes who participated in the World Beach Ultimate Championship in Portugal, and the risk factors associated with these injuries. The sample included 484 athletes aged 18–64 years, of whom 275 (56.8%) were male. Data was collected using a digital questionnaire. Across their frisbee practice, 391 (80.8%) athletes reported at least one injury, totalling 1685 injuries. A total of 49 (10.1%) athletes reported an injury in the last 7 days. Over the past 12 months, 211 (43.6%) athletes sustained injuries, totalling 358 cases. The injury proportion was 0.44 (95% CI: 39.2–48.0), and the injury rate was 0.67 injuries per 1000 h of training. The most frequent injuries were muscle strains (18.86%) and sprains (13.43%), mainly affecting the ankle (62; 17.71%) and knee (54; 15.43%). Repetitive movements (84; 22.11%) and changes in direction (62; 16.32%) were the most common mechanisms. Athletes with equal or more than 11 years of practice had a higher injury risk (OR = 1.84; 95% CI: 1.16–2.91; p = 0.009). Frisbee athletes present a considerable risk of injuries. Preventive strategies are recommended. Full article

This paper introduces fairer measures of individual pitcher performance in baseball using the Shapley Value from coalitional game theory. The paper’s key conceptual innovation is a novel two-stage procedure for constructing the coalitionary game value functions for runs allowed and outs recorded by a baseball team’s defense. This procedure enables the Shapley Value calculation to fairly divide credit for runs and out between different pitchers and between pitchers and fielders. It also results in two new statistics—Shapley Pitcher Runs (SPR) and Shapley Pitcher Outs (SPO)—that, unlike traditional pitching statistics, consistently satisfy several mathematical fairness axioms. A third statistic, called Shapley Run Average, provides a fairer measure of pitcher efficiency. I calculate these statistics for the 2022 Major League Baseball regular season and the 1955–2022 World Series championships. Using SPR and SPO as the standard for fairness, empirical analysis reveals that the traditional pitching statistics systematically and unfairly overcredit pitchers by 40–50%, with starting pitchers miscredited more severely than relievers. Analysis of SRA identifies efficient pitchers whose performance is obscured by conventional statistics and enables a reassessment of historic World Series performances. Overall, this work demonstrates another application of the Shapley Value to creating new performance measures in team sports. Full article

Background/Objectives: In pole vaulting, the capacity to store elastic energy within the pole (Epole) significantly influences performance. This study investigated the characteristics of Epole storage by analyzing the box reaction force and vector angle. Methods: Eight male pole vaulters, including World Championships participants, were examined. A motion capture system (VICON) and force plates (Kistler) were used to measure the vector angle (angle between the compression force (CF) and box reaction force vectors) and horizontal velocity of the center of gravity (COG) (Vcogh). Epole was calculated as the integral of the CF (estimated from the box reaction forces), and pole bending displacement. The relationships between each variable and the peak height of COG (HP) were assessed using Pearson’s product–moment correlation coefficients. Results: HP correlated with Vcogh in the pole plant (PP) (r = 0.82) and Epole (r = 0.94). Vaulters with a higher HP maintained a vector angle < 2° between 20% and 80% of the pole bending phase, indicating closer directional alignment between the box reaction force vector and pole chord direction, whereas vaulters with lower HP exhibited larger vector angles (4–8°), associated with a relative reduction in the axial component of force transmitted to the pole. Conclusions: A smaller vector angle effectively enhanced the CF, thereby increasing pole bending and promoting greater accumulation of Epole. Therefore, maintaining a small vector angle may enable more effective force transmission along the pole chord, and vector angle characteristics and PP horizontal velocity may assist appropriate pole selection and training strategies to enhance elastic energy storage and performance. Background: Pacing critically influences swimming performance. In master swimmers, aging leads to performance decline, but the age at which pacing becomes unstable, and whether this precedes performance loss, remains unclear. Objective: This cross-sectional retrospective study analyzed sex, distance and stroke-specific age-related breakpoints in pacing variability (CV) and performance (RT) in master swimmers. Methods: A total of 13,822 swimmers (7417 men and 6405 women; age 25–99 years) competing at the World Aquatics Masters Championships (2023–2025) were included. Results: CV showed the strongest association with RT (r = 0.173, p < 0.001). Overall, CV worsened significantly earlier (52 years, +2.82%/year) than RT (82 years, +0.51%/year; p < 0.001). In women, CV deterioration began at ~50 years, while RT was maintained until ~85 years; this was particularly pronounced in short-distance events (pacing breakpoint at 35 years). Men displayed more synchronized decline patterns. Age breakpoints of CV and RT were coincident in freestyle and breaststroke (82 years). Backstroke and butterfly demonstrated RT breakpoints at 47 and 67 years, respectively, with CV occurring at 72 years. Conclusions: These findings indicate that CV generally deteriorates years before RT and represents a stroke, sex and distance-specific marker of accelerated functional decline in elite master swimmers. Monitoring CV may provide early warning of impending performance deterioration informing timely, targeted training interventions to extend athletic longevity. Full article

The AIMS-3G was developed to expand and reconceptualize previous measures and conceptualizations of athletic identity. Although the AIMS-3G has appeared in research, comprehensive tests of its validity and reliability had not extended beyond the initial work by Brewer and his colleagues. This study examined the psychometric properties of three AIMS-3G models: the unidimensional Athletic Identity Scale, the Athletic Identity Property model comprising Prominence and Self-worth Contingency components, and the Athletic Identity Process Model comprising Self-presentation and Social Reinforcement components. In total, there were 366 participants (M age = 21.52, SD = 3.68), primarily team sport athletes (n = 322, 87.98%). A smaller portion of the sample (n = 50, 13.66%) competed at the highest levels of sport, including the Olympics, World Championships, or top professional basketball leagues (e.g., the WNBA). Gender distribution was nearly equal (female n = 195, 53.28%). Participants were drawn from European women’s basketball teams and from an American university club and recreational sport teams. The university sample completed the full AIMS-3G, whereas the European women’s sample completed the four-item unidimensional scale. The results strongly supported the psychometric soundness of the four-item Athletic Identity Scale. For the Property model, reliability and factor loadings were acceptable, though confirmatory factor analysis (CFA) produced mixed fit indices. For the Process model, CFA indicated inadequate fit despite good to excellent reliability and significant factor loadings. Practical implications, limitations, and future directions were discussed in relation to Brewer and colleagues’ work and this study’s findings. Full article

Background: Exercise-induced bronchoconstriction (EIB) is common in athletes, being more frequent in outdoor endurance-based/long-distance sports. We followed a World-Class marathon paddler’s season with recurrent episodes of EIB, which intensified during cold exposure workouts. This unique immunophenotype profile during the season and its variations were reflected in acute and chronic inflammatory markers. Methods: A longitudinal case study was conducted with blood sampling obtained from a single paddler after overnight fasting at three timepoints: T1 (beginning of season, after 15-day rest period), T2 (post-Winter National Championship), and T3 (post-Summer National Championship). Complete blood counts and lymphocyte immunophenotyping were performed using automated hematology analysis and multiparametric flow cytometry. Results: The total numbers of leukocytes (T1: 6.3; T2: 5.0; T3: 5.5 × 109/L), neutrophils (3.1; 2.5; 2.8 × 109/L), and lymphocytes (2.4; 1.8; 2.2 × 109/L) declined between T1 and T2, followed by a partial recovery at T3. In contrast, monocyte counts exhibited the reverse pattern (0.41; 0.62; 0.31 × 109/L). The two T cell subsets (αβ and γδ) remained relatively stable, showing only minor seasonal fluctuations. CD19+ B cells, initially at very low levels, increased steadily as the season progressed (0.05; 0.07; 0.16 × 109/L). During T2, the proportion of memory lymphocytes (CD45RO+) rose, while naive cells (CD45RA+) declined; this trend was subsequently inverted at M3. Although the CD4+/CD8+ ratio varied over time, it consistently stayed below the normal reference range established for healthy controls (0.50; 0.83; 0.60 for T1, T2, and T3, respectively). Conclusions: The immune assessment of the World-Class marathon paddler revealed transient immunosuppression early in the season, marked by reduced neutrophils, a low CD4+/CD8+ ratio, and diminished CD19+ lymphocytes. Over time, immune parameters showed signs of recovery, indicating a temporary imbalance that did not impair the athlete’s physical performance. Conclusions: This case study of an elite marathon kayaker revealed transient immune fluctuations across a competitive season, including early immunosuppression (low neutrophils, CD4+/CD8+ ratio 0.50, and minimal CD19+ B cells) followed by partial recovery mid- and late-season. Despite persistently inverted CD4+/CD8+ ratios suggesting chronic immune dysregulation, the athlete maintained competitive performance, highlighting the temporary nature of these changes and emphasizing that regular immune monitoring can help optimize health and performance in elite athletes. Background: Go-karting has become an increasingly popular motorsport and leisure activity among children of all ages. However, go-karting is not without risks. The main purpose of this study was to assess the number of pediatric patients presenting at the emergency department of a level-I trauma center following a go-kart-related injury event over a nine-year period. Additionally, this study aimed to provide a comprehensive overview of patient characteristics, trauma mechanisms, injury types and use of safety devices. Methods: A retrospective single-center cohort study identified all patients that presented at the emergency department from January 2015 to December 2023. Data from the Dutch Nationwide Trauma Registry and medical files were assessed, descriptive statistics were conducted, and cohorts—defined by date—were compared: the first cohort from January 2015 to December 2021, and the second from January 2022 to December 2023, with December 2021 marking the moment when Max Verstappen became the first dutchman to win the Formula One World Driver’s Championship. Results: A total of 14 patients were identified, with an incidence rate of respectively 0.86 and 4.0 per year for the cohorts. In the total study population, 86% were male and the mean age was 12 years (range 4–17). Collision was the most common trauma mechanism with velocities even exceeding 70 km/h. Reported use of a helmet and seatbelt were respectively 64% and 29%. The mean Injury Severity Score (ISS) was 8.6 (±8.6). 57% of the patients encountered minor injuries (ISS ≤ 8), encompassing mostly soft tissue injuries, whereas truncal injuries occurred most frequently in moderately (ISS 9–15) and severely (ISS ≥ 16) injured children. Conclusions: This study has found that although the number of cases was relatively low, an increase in injuries was seen after 2021 in go-karting in children. Almost half of patients were seriously injured, requiring admission at the least. Resulting from this, considerations on minimum age for participation, enforcement of the use of safety devices including additional safety measures targeting truncal protection, and more clear laws and regulations are advised. Objectives: To systematically review and analyze electronic systems in competitive motorcycles (2020–2025), examining their technical specifications, performance impacts, and technological evolution across MotoGP, World Superbike (WSBK), MotoE, British Superbike (BSB), and Spanish Championship (ESBK) categories. Eligibility criteria: Included studies reporting technical specifications or performance data of electronic systems in professional motorcycle racing, published between January 2020 and December 2025 in English, Spanish, Italian, or Japanese. Excluded: opinion pieces, amateur racing, and studies without quantitative data. Information sources: IEEE Xplore, SAE Technical Papers, Web of Science, Scopus, and specialized motorsport databases were searched through 15 December 2025. Risk of bias: Modified Cochrane Risk of Bias tool for experimental studies and Newcastle-Ottawa Scale for observational studies. Synthesis of results: Synthesis of results: Random-effects meta-analysis using DerSimonian-Laird method for homogeneous outcomes; narrative synthesis for heterogeneous data. Included studies: 87 studies met inclusion criteria (52 experimental, 38 simulation, 23 technical descriptions, 14 comparative analyses). Electronic systems were categorized into six domains: Engine Control Units (ECU, 28 studies, 22%), Vehicle Dynamics (23 studies, 18%), Traction Control (19 studies, 15%), Data Acquisition (21 studies, 17%), Braking Systems (18 studies, 14%), and Emerging Technologies (18 studies, 14%). Note that studies could address multiple domains. Limitations of evidence: Proprietary restrictions limited access to 31% of technical details; 43% lacked cross-category comparisons. Interpretation: Electronic systems are primary performance differentiators, with computational power following Moore’s Law. Future developments point toward distributed architectures and 5G telemetry. Full article

Forecasting outcomes in high-stakes competitive spectacles like the Olympic Games, World Cups, and professional league championships has grown increasingly vital, directly impacting strategic planning, resource allocation, and performance optimization across a multitude of fields. However, accurate forecasting remains challenging due to complex, nonlinear interactions inherent in high-dimensional time-series data, further complicated by socioeconomic indicators, historical influences, and host-country advantages. In this study, we propose a comprehensive forecasting framework integrating structured time-series modeling with ensemble learning. We extract key structural features via two novel indices: the Advantage Index (measuring a competitor’s dominance in specific areas) and the Herfindahl Index (quantifying performance outcome concentration). We also evaluate host-country advantage using a Difference-in-Differences (DiD) approach. Leveraging these insights, we develop a dual-branch predictive model combining an Attention-augmented Long Short-Term Memory (Attention-LSTM) network and a Random Forest classifier. Attention-LSTM captures long-term dependencies and dynamic patterns in structured temporal data, while Random Forest handles predictions for unrecognized contenders, addressing zero-inflation issues. Extensive stability and comparative analyses demonstrate that our model outperforms traditional and state-of-the-art methods, exhibiting strong resilience to input perturbations, consistent performance across multiple runs, and appropriate sensitivity to key features. Our key contributions include the development of a novel integrated forecasting framework, the introduction of two innovative structural indices for competitive dynamics analysis, and the demonstration of robust predictive performance that bridges technical innovation with practical strategic application. Finally, we transform our modeling insights into actionable strategic insights. This translation is powered by interpretable feature importance rankings and stability analysis that rigorously validate the robustness of key predictors. These insights apply across multiple dimensions—encompassing advantage assessment, resource distribution, strategic simulation, and breakthrough potential identification—providing comprehensive decision support for strategic planners and policymakers navigating competitive environments. Background: Recently, elite women’s boxing has undergone significant structural and regulatory changes, including the adoption of the 3 × 3-min-bout format and expanded Olympic categories. Despite increased female participation, scientific literature remains predominantly focused on male athletes. This study aimed to identify the technical and tactical actions that distinguish winner from loser boxers in elite amateur women’s boxing by analysing the final matches of the 2023 IBA Women’s World Boxing Championships. Methods: Twelve final bouts (one per weight-category) were analysed using a customised notational framework based on the offensive–defensive interaction cycle. A total of 1323 offensive and 1456 defensive actions were recorded and categorised using Kinovea (0.9.5 release) software and an Excel dashboard. Offensive Effectiveness Ratio (OER) and Defensive Effectiveness Ratio (DER) were calculated, and Chi-square tests with standardised residuals were applied to detect associations between action types and bout outcomes. Results: Winners performed fewer offensive actions (n = 635) than losers (n = 688) but demonstrated significantly higher OER across all rounds (W: 0.39-0.38-0.39; L: 0.26-0.28-0.29). Winners landed more punches to the head and made greater use of rear-hand hooks and uppercuts. Pivoting and shifting back, particularly when followed by counterattacks, were significantly associated with winners (p < 0.001). Conversely, parrying and single counterpunches were linked to losing outcomes. DER values suggested superior defensive efficiency among winners. Conclusions: Winner boxers showed superior technical effectiveness, selective use of single and rear-hand punches and used more dynamic defensive strategies. These findings support using notational analysis in high-performance coaching and emphasise the need for more research on elite female combat athletes. Full article

Selection to a national team is a prestigious milestone, and the World Padel Championships showcase elite talent on a global stage. This study explored the relationship between national team quality—measured via individual FIP (Federacioón Internacional de Paádel, International Padel Federation) rankings and points—and final team placements at the 2024 World Padel Championships in Qatar. Data from 16 men’s and 16 women’s teams included final standings, average and median FIP rankings, and total and average FIP points. Pearson correlation and ANOVA were applied to average FIP rankings; due to non-normality, Spearman correlation and Kruskal–Wallis tests were used for total FIP points. Results indicated that top-ranked teams, such as Argentina, Spain, and Italy, had more players above the competition-wide ranking threshold, whereas teams like Uruguay and the USA had none. Balanced ranking distributions were observed in male teams such as Belgium and The Netherlands and in female teams such as Portugal and Argentina. A moderate positive correlation emerged between average team rankings and final placements for men, and a strong correlation for women. Total FIP points showed a very strong negative correlation with final rankings for both genders. In conclusion, individual player quality, as indicated by rankings and points, strongly correlates with team performance in the 2024 World Padel Championships. Full article
