Wastewater generation is a growing concern in the preliminary treatment of heavy crude oil and tar sand. The separation of fine oil droplets from water by flotation is a critical process in the production of bitumen from tar sand. The flow structure from a high-resolution simulation of a single air macrobubble (>3 mm diameter) rising through water in the presence of a very dilute dispersion of mono-sized oil microdroplets (30 μm) under quiescent conditions is presented. A combined model of computational fluid dynamics (CFD), a volume of fluid (VOF) multiphase approach, and the discrete phase method (DPM) was developed to simulate bubble dynamics, the trajectories of the dispersed oil droplet, and the interaction between the air bubble and the oil droplet in quiescent water. The CFD–VOF–DPM combined model reproduced the interacting dynamics of the bubble and oil droplets in water at the bubble–droplet scale. With an extremely large diameter ratio between the bubble and the dispersed oil droplet, this model clearly demonstrated that the dominant mechanism for the interaction was the hydrodynamic capture of oil droplets in the wake of a rising air macrobubble. The entrainment of the oil droplets into the wake of the rising bubbles was strongly influenced by the bubble’s shape. Full article

A two-phase closed thermosyphon (TPCT), a gravity-assisted heat pipe, is a highly efficient heat transmitter involving liquid–vapor phase change. It is used in many applications, including heat spreading, thermal management and control, and energy saving. The main objective of this study is to investigate the effects of the operating conditions for a thermosyphon used in solar water heaters. The study particularly focuses on the influence of the inclination angle. Thus, a comprehensive simulation model is developed using the volume of fluid (VOF) approach. Complex and related phenomena, including two-phase flow, phase change, and heat exchange, are taken into account. To implement the model, an open-source CFD toolbox based on finite volume formulation, OpenFOAM, is used. The model is then validated by comparing numerical results to the experimental data from the literature. The obtained results show that the simulation model is reliable for investigating the effects of various operating conditions on the transient and steady-state behavior of the thermosyphon. In fact, bubble creation, growth, and advection can be tracked correctly in the liquid pool at the evaporator. The effects of the designed operating conditions on the heat transfer parameters are also discussed. In particular, the optimal tilt angle is shown to be 60° for the intermediate saturation temperature (<50 °C) and 90° for the larger saturation temperature (>60 °C). Full article

Wave deformation and sediment transport nearest the shoreside are among the main reasons for sand erosion and beach profile changes. In particular, identifying the areas of incident-wave breaking and longshore current generation parallel to the shoreline is important for understanding the morphological changes of coastal beaches. In this study, a two-phase incompressible flow model along with a sandy sloping topography was employed to investigate the wave deformation and longshore current generation areas in a circular wave basin model. The finite volume method (FVM) was implemented to discretize the governing equations in cylindrical coordinates, the volume-of-fluid method (VOF) was adopted to differentiate the air–water interfaces in the control cells, and the zonal embedded grid technique was employed for grid generation in the cylindrical computational domain. The water surface elevations and velocity profiles were measured in different wave conditions, and the measurements showed that the maximum water levels per wave were high and varied between cases, as well as between cross-sections in a single case. Additionally, the mean water levels were lower in the adjacent positions of the approximated wave-breaking zones. The wave-breaking positions varied between cross-sections in a single case, with the incident-wave height, mean water level, and wave-breaking position measurements indicating the influence of downstream flow variation in each cross-section on the sloping topography. The cross-shore velocity profiles became relatively stable over time, while the longshore velocity profiles predominantly moved in the alongshore direction, with smaller fluctuations, particularly during the same time period and in measurement positions near the wave-breaking zone. The computed velocity profiles also varied between cross-sections, and for the velocity profiles along the cross-shore and longshore directions nearest the wave-breaking areas where the downstream flow had minimal influence, it was presumed that there was longshore-current generation in the sloping topography nearest the shoreside. The computed results were compared with the experimental results and we observed similar characteristics for wave profiles in the same wave period case in both models. In the future, further investigations can be conducted using the presented circular wave basin model to investigate the oblique wave deformation and longshore current generation in different sloping and wave conditions. This study investigates the influence of inclination on a submerged plate (SP) device acting as both a breakwater (BW) and a wave energy converter (WEC) subjected to representative regular and realistic irregular waves of a sea state across 11 inclination angles. Numerical simulations were conducted using ANSYS Fluent. Regular waves were generated by Stokes’s second-order theory, while the WaveMIMO technique was employed to generate irregular waves. Using the volume of fluid (VOF) method to model the water–air interaction, both approaches generate waves by imposing their vertical and horizontal velocity components at the inlet of the wave flume. The SP’s performance as a BW was analyzed based on the upstream and downstream free surface elevations of the device; in turn, its performance as a WEC was determined through its axial velocity beneath the plate. The results indicate that performance varies between regular and irregular wave conditions, underscoring the importance of accurately characterizing the sea state at the intended installation site. These findings demonstrate that the inclination of the SP plays a critical role in balancing its dual functionality, with certain configurations enhancing WEC efficiency by over 50% while still offering relevant BW performance, even under realistic irregular sea conditions. In the present study, three-dimensional turbulent, subcritical open-channel flow (Fr = 0.19) through submerged rigid vegetation is numerically investigated using the ANSYS FLUENT solver (v. 22. 1). The Volume of Fluid (VOF) method is applied for free-surface tracking, while the standard k-ε turbulence model is employed for turbulence closure. Vegetation is modeled as vertical rigid cylinders fixed at the bottom of the channel. Regarding the arrangement of the stems, two cases are examined. In the first case, a linear arrangement of three equally spaced vegetative stems is located transversely at the center of the channel, while in the second case, a parallel arrangement of fifteen equidistant vegetative stems is located downstream of the channel center. In both cases, the vertical velocity profile within the submerged vegetation layer deviates significantly from that of the upper non-vegetated layer, which generally adheres to the logarithmic velocity distribution. In the second case, flow field repeatability is observed after the third stem series, particularly in terms of velocity profiles. Additionally, the structure of turbulence is noticeably affected in the vicinity of the stems, resulting in higher eddy viscosity values near each stem’s crest area. Furthermore, a localized drop in the free surface is recorded above the vegetated region, while a slight rise is observed upstream of each stem series, consistent with subcritical open-channel flow. Investigating the coupled hydrodynamic and thermal wakes induced by underwater vehicles is vital for non-acoustic detection and environmental monitoring. Here, the standard SUBOFF model is simulated under eight operating conditions—speeds of 10, 15, and 20 kn; depths of 10, 20, and 30 m; and both with and without thermal discharge—using Delayed Detached Eddy Simulation (DDES) coupled with the Volume of Fluid (VOF) method. Results indicate that, under heat emission conditions, higher speeds accelerate wake temperature decay, making the thermal wake difficult to detect downstream; without heat emission, turbulent mixing dominates the temperature field, and speed effects are minor. With increased speed, wake vorticity at a fixed location grows by about 30%, free-surface wave height rises from 0.05 to 0.15 m, and wavelength remains around 1.8 m, all positively correlated with speed. Dive depth is negatively correlated with wave height, decreasing from 0.15 to 0.04 m as depth increases from 5 to 20 m, while wavelength remains largely unchanged. At a 10 m submergence depth, the thermal wake is clearly detectable on the surface but becomes hard to detect beyond 20 m, indicating a pronounced depth effect on its visibility. These results not only confirm the positive correlation between vessel speed and wake vorticity reported in earlier studies but also extend those findings by providing the first quantitative evaluation of how submergence depth critically limits thermal wake visibility beyond 20 m. This research provides quantitative evaluations of wake characteristics under varying speeds, depths, and heat emissions, offering valuable insights for stealth navigation and detection technologies. Under the trend of lightweight and high-efficiency development in industrial equipment, precise regulation of lubrication in gear reducers is a key breakthrough for enhancing transmission system efficiency and reliability. This study establishes a three-dimensional numerical model for high-speed gear jet lubrication using computational fluid dynamics (CFD) and dynamic mesh technology. By implementing the volume of fluid (VOF) multiphase flow model and the standard k-ω turbulence model, the study simulates the dynamic distribution of lubricant in gear meshing zones and analyzes critical parameters such as the oil volume fraction, eddy viscosity, and turbulent kinetic energy. The results show that reducing the oil injection distance significantly enhances lubricant coverage and continuity: as the injection distance increases from 4.8 mm to 24 mm, the lubricant shifts from discrete droplets to a dense wedge-shaped film, mitigating lubrication failure risks from secondary atomization and energy loss. The optimized injection distance also improves the spatial stability of eddy viscosity and suppresses excessive dissipation of turbulent kinetic energy, enhancing both the shear-load capacity and thermal management. Dynamic data from monitoring point P show that reducing the injection distance stabilizes lubricant velocity and promotes more consistent oil film formation and heat transfer. Through multiphysics simulations and parametric analysis, this study elucidates the interaction between geometric parameters and hydrodynamic behaviors in jet lubrication systems. The findings provide quantitative evaluation methods for structural optimization and energy control in gear lubrication systems, offering theoretical insights for thermal management and reliability enhancement in high-speed transmission. These results contribute to the lightweight design and sustainable development of industrial equipment. Full article

Understanding the displacement mechanism of cement slurry in drilling fluid is crucial for enhancing the safety of oil well cementing and mitigating geotechnical risks. This study investigated the oil well cementing process by simulating the displacement of drilling fluid by cement slurry in the annular space between the well casing and the surrounding formations using computational fluid dynamics (CFD). The volume-of-fluid (VOF) method in ANSYS-Fluent was employed to track the interfaces between drilling fluid, spacer fluid, and cement slurry. The study simulated fluid motion during drilling operations in the oil and gas industry, considering both smooth and irregular annular geometries around wells. The results show that the efficiency of cement slurry in displacing drilling fluid is higher in Case-2 (irregular outer walls) than in Case-1 (smooth outer walls). Under various inlet velocity conditions in Case-2, an optimal filling rate was achieved at an inlet velocity of 0.5 m/s. When the inlet velocity of the cement slurry was 0.2 m/s, a higher cement content was observed compared to 0.05 m/s, although some recirculation regions were more likely to form at this velocity. Microfluidics is a rapidly advancing field focused on optimizing microdevices for applications such as organ-on-a-chip systems and enhancing laboratory analyses. Understanding the physical parameters of droplet generation is crucial for these devices. Computational fluid dynamics (CFD) techniques are essential for providing insights into the limitations and efficiency of numerical methods for studying fluid dynamics and improving our understanding of various application conditions. However, the influence of different numerical methods on the analysis of physical parameters in problems involving droplet generation in microchannels remains an area of ongoing research. This study implements the Volume of Fluid (VOF) method to investigate key physical parameters, including droplet size and the effect of the capillary number on fluid regimes, in droplet generation within a microchannel featuring a T-junction geometry. We compare the VOF method with the widely used Level Set Method (LSM) to evaluate its suitability for this context. The results show that the VOF method agrees with the LSM in fundamental outcomes, such as the reduction in droplet diameter as the flow rate ratio increases and the identification of the capillary number’s influence on fluid regime classification. The VOF method provides a clearer understanding of transitions between fluid regimes by detecting stages of non-uniformity in droplet size. It identifies a transition region between regimes with variations in droplet size, proving to be effective at mapping fluid flow regimes. This study highlights the potential of the VOF method in offering more detailed insights into instabilities and transitions between fluid regimes at the microscale. Full article

In the field of agriculture, various types of pesticides are used to control crop pests. These chemical agents are applied using nozzles with different geometries. Regardless of their configuration and operational liquid parameters, the applied liquid jet encounters issues with wind drift and penetration efficiency. Therefore, it is necessary to optimize the spraying process. In this study, 3D numerical calculations were performed using computational fluid dynamics (CFD). A two-phase flow model based on the volume of fluid (VOF) method was used to simulate the mixing of water and air. The k-ω SST turbulence model was adopted to capture vortex phenomena. A hollow cone nozzle geometry, commonly used in orchards, was selected. Simulations allowed the analysis of pressure, velocity, and turbulence kinetic energy (TKE) in selected cross-sections. Results show that the maximum velocity of the liquid jet at the nozzle outlet exceeded 23 m/s, with the highest TKE reaching 35 m2/s2 in the vortex chamber. The computed spray cone angle was approximately 88°, while the experimental value was 80°, and the simulated mass flow rate differed by 16.7% from the measured reference. The critical flow region was identified between the vortex insert and the ceramic stem, where the highest gradients of pressure and velocity were observed. Full article

This paper investigates and assesses the potential applicability of global mass transfer coefficients derived from large-scale experiments to the bubble growth of a single bubble in a super-saturated flow (σ=9). Therefore, it presents, for a specific flow velocity (u=1ms, Re=10,678), a comparison between correlation-based modelling and 3D Large Eddy Simulation–Volume of Fluid (LES-VOF) Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) simulations (minimum cell size of 10 µm, Δt = 10 µs). After the verification of the CFD with pool nucleation bubbles, two cases are regarded: (1) the bubble flowing in the bulk and (2) a bubble on a wall with a crossflow. The correlation-based modelling results in a nearly linear relationship between bubble radius and time; meanwhile, theoretically, the self-similarity rule offers r~Bt0.5. The Avdeev correlation gives the best agreement with the CFD simulation for a bubble in the flow bulk (case 1), while the laminar approach for calculation of the exposure time of the penetration theory shows good agreement with the CFD simulation for the bubble growth at the wall (case 2). This preliminary study provides the first quantitative validation of global mass transfer coefficient correlations at the single-bubble scale, suggesting that computationally intensive CFD simulations may be omitted for rapid estimations. Future work will extend the analysis to a wider range of flow velocities and bubble diameters to further validate these findings. Full article

The volume-of-fluid (VOF) method is widely used for multiphase flow simulations, where the VOF function implicitly represents the interface through the volume fraction field. The height function (HF) method on a Cartesian grid integrates the volume fractions of a column of cells across the interface. A stencil of three consecutive heights and centered finite differences compute the unit normal n and the curvature κ with second-order convergence with grid refinement. The interface line can cross more than one cell of the column, and the value of the geometrical properties of the interface should be interpolated in the cut cells. We propose a numerical algorithm to interpolate the geometrical data that removes the inconsistency between theoretical and numerical results presented in many papers. A constant approximation in the column of cells provides first-order convergence with grid refinement, while linear and quadratic interpolations indicate second-order convergence. The numerical results obtained with analytical curves agree with the theoretical development presented in this study. Full article

In this study, a correction procedure for ship mass and its longitudinal location of center of gravity suitable for a simulation environment is proposed in OpenFOAM v6.0. The concept is implemented ensuring static equilibrium and an approximately zero-pitch moment on the ship before the simulation. The viscous flow field around the ship in calm water is simulated using the VOF (Volume of Fluid) free surface two-phase and SST (Shear Stress Transport) kω turbulence models. Using static mesh, the resistance error of medium and fine grids is 4%, on average, against the experimental value. As the sinkage and trim are predicted using dynamic mesh, the increasing ship’s resistance causes larger errors, except for the container ship. Through the proposed correction, the ship’s vertical motions are significantly improved, and the resistance error decreases for the dynamic simulation. For the container ship, the error of resistance and motion achieved is less than 1%. The sinkage and trim errors improve tremendously for the tanker and bulk carrier, and the resistance errors are reduced slightly, by less than 3%. In the end, the detailed flow field is analyzed, as well as the ship wave-making pattern and the nominal wake velocity distribution, and these are compared with the measurement data available. The characteristics of the flow phenomena are successfully modeled. The resistance value for each hull form satisfies the requirement of Verification and Validation, and the uncertainty values are estimated. Full article

To address the challenge of imprecise micro-droplet formation control in piezoelectric jetting devices used in sand mold 3D printing and apply on-demand inkjet printing technology to sand mold manufacturing, this study first explains the working principle of a piezoelectric shear-mode printhead. A mathematical model of the droplet ejection process is then established based on Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD). Building upon this model, numerical simulations of droplet generation, breakup, and flight are conducted by using the Volume of Fluid (VOF) model within the Fluent module of the Workbench 2020 R2 platform. Finally, under consistent driving conditions, the effects of key parameters—viscosity, surface tension, and inlet velocity—on the ejection process are investigated through simulation. Based on the results, appropriate ranges and recommended values for ink properties are determined. This study provides significant engineering value for improving the stability and precision of droplet formation in industrial sand mold 3D printing. Full article

This paper investigates the special phenomenon that the practical immersed depth of a spiral bevel gear as the driving gear under splash lubrication is significantly less than the static depth. To quantify the practical immersion depth, a computational fluid dynamics (CFD) approach integrated with image processing techniques is utilized to determine the dynamic immersion depth and the associated churning power loss. First, a theoretical method is developed to estimate the churning losses of the bevel gear by replacing the static immersion depth with the practical dynamic immersion depth. Subsequently, the CFD method, which incorporates the overset mesh technique and the volume-of-fluid (VOF) method, is employed to simulate the gear churning phenomenon. Meanwhile, the dynamic immersion depth is determined through image processing techniques that analyze the oil distribution characteristics in the splash-lubricated bevel gear. Finally, experimental results obtained from a dedicated lubrication test rig are favorably compared with the numerical results, confirming that the practical dynamic immersion depth is an accurate and effective parameter for calculating power losses.
