This paper proposes a data-driven framework for simulating turbocharger (TC) failure scenarios and modelling specific fuel oil consumption (SFOC) degradation in two-stroke low-speed marine diesel engines. A GaussianCopula model was fitted to the joint distribution of fifteen variables, using approximately eleven months of operational sensor data (n = 480 clean records, 4 h interval, January–December 2014) taken from a container ship. Three physically motivated failure scenarios were produced: turbine blade fouling, bearing wear and compressor surge. Predictive models trained on the real dataset achieved R2 = 0.9998 for TC RPM and R2 = 0.984 for fuel flow when using Gradient Boosting with 5-fold cross-validation. Feature importance analysis showed that the dominant determinants of TC speed were scavenging air intake pressure (35.3%) and engine power (MCR, 31.3%). Shaft power (45.5%) and TC RPM (19.3%) together explained most of the fuel consumption variance. Simulated failure scenarios produced SFOC increases of +6.6% (fouling), +9.6% (surge), and +13.3% (bearing wear) when compared to a normal operating baseline of 202 g/kWh, which is in line with published empirical data from MAN B&W engine performance curves. An IsolationForest anomaly detector trained only on normal operating samples flagged failure scenario records at a rate of 17.5–23.7%, which demonstrates that moderate-sensitivity early warning detection is feasible from routine sensor streams. The results show that TC condition monitoring could serve as a leading indicator of fuel-efficiency degradation. This has significant implications for condition-based maintenance planning and CII (Carbon Intensity Indicator) compliance. Full article

Titanium alloys have been extensively employed in the aerospace industry, and their service performance is largely governed by high-temperature low-cycle fatigue damage. However, investigations into the fatigue behavior of TC25 titanium alloy subjected to corrosion in a marine atmospheric environment remain limited. In this study, high-temperature low-cycle fatigue tests were conducted on TC25 titanium alloy before and after corrosion. It was found that, after corrosion, the proportion of the structural failure stage increased by approximately 10%. The corrosion pits on the surface led to local stress concentration, resulting in an increase in the number of fatigue crack sources and an acceleration of the fatigue crack growth rate, thus reducing the fatigue life of the material. These findings provide important theoretical and experimental support for the application of TC25 titanium alloy in marine environments. Full article

The fatigue performance of titanium alloys is a critical determinant of the service life and structural integrity for aerospace and marine engineering components. But within the framework of damage tolerance design, resistance to fatigue crack propagation is regarded as a key indicator governing the fatigue performance of these engineering structures. In previous work, while the general fatigue performance of Ti–6Al–4V-0.55Fe alloy has received systematic study, targeted research focusing on its resistance to fatigue crack propagation remains limited. Therefore, in this work, compared with Ti–6Al–4V ELI alloy, the fatigue crack propagation behavior and fracture mechanism of Ti–6Al–4V-0.55Fe alloy with a duplex microstructure were systematically investigated. The results show that when ∆K < 12.75 MPa⋅m1/2, Ti-6Al-4V-0.55Fe alloy demonstrates superior resistance to fatigue crack propagation. Fractographic analysis indicates that the primary difference between the two alloys lies in the stage of crack initiation and early propagation. This behavior is attributed to the addition of trace Fe, which enhances α/β boundary resistance and thereby retards crack growth. Moreover, crack propagation of TC4-F alloy is also slowed by the increased path length from bypassing the αp phase. Full article

Freshwater scarcity is a major global issue faced by various regions, and the most common portable water sources globally are estuaries, canals, dams, lakes, and rivers. Existing water resources function as the best sinks for the frequent release of effluents from industrial and residential activities. This common practice often results in water pollution, a deterioration in marine biodiversity, and possible health risks for human populations. This study employed standard analytical methods in assessing the physicochemical and microbial characteristics of water samples collected from the Sundays River estuary in Eastern Cape Province (ECP), South Africa (SA). Microbiological assessment revealed that during the spring season, presumptive Escherichia coli (E. coli) colony counts were 1 cfu/100 mL, while total coliforms (TCs) and fecal coliforms (FCs) were recorded at 42.67 cfu/100 mL and 1 cfu/100 mL, respectively. In the summer season, fecal coliform (FC) counts reached 3.5 cfu/100 mL, while Enterococcus levels were higher, ranging up to 77.75 cfu/100 mL. Furthermore, the average standards of physicochemical parameters assessed in water obtained from both spring and summer seasons ranged as follows: pH (8.71–9.31), temperature (20.98–22.21 °C), turbidity (10–35.55 FNU), total alkalinity (22.25–94.00 mg/L), oxidation–reduction potential (ORP) (8.05–151.6 mV), electrical conductivity (EC) (13,915–40,260 uS/cm), salinity (8.07–25.78 psu), dissolved oxygen (DO) (6.79–7.39 mg/L), total dissolved solids (TDSs) (6960.6–20,125 mg/L), and biochemical oxygen demand (BOD) (0.11–2.94 mg/L). The levels of TDS, EC, turbidity, and salinity in the Sundays River estuary water exceeded the World Health Organization (WHO) guidelines of 2017, rendering the water unfit for even recreational purposes. Additionally, the bacterial levels identified in this study were above the values set by the South Africa Department of Water Affairs (SA-DWAF). The identified microorganisms are perceived as essential indicators of fecal contamination and have the potential to multiply in the environment. Possible pollution may be a result of various municipal effluents consistently discharged into the waterbody. Full article

Selective laser melting (SLM), a pivotal additive manufacturing (AM) technology for titanium alloys, enables near-net-shape forming of complex structures with relative densities of up to 99.9%, making it indispensable in aerospace, biomedical, and marine engineering. This review comprehensively updates the state of the art on SLM-fabricated TC4 (Ti-6Al-4V) alloy, addressing critical gaps in previous studies by integrating novel research progress, in-depth mechanistic analyses, and multi-dimensional comparisons. The core focus is on the unique thermal cycle (106–108 °C/s heating/cooling rates) of SLM, which induces a predominant needle-like martensitic α′ phase (99.7%) and minimal β phase (0.3%), leading to intrinsic anisotropy and low ductility. Room-temperature tensile strength reaches 1315.32 MPa with 9.6% elongation, and high-cycle fatigue limits the range from 417 to 829 MPa, strongly dependent on process parameters and post-treatment. Corrosion anisotropy is systematically analyzed: the XY plane (parallel to scanning direction) exhibits superior corrosion resistance in 1 M HCl (fewer pits and lower corrosion current density) and 3.5% NaCl (more stable passive film) compared to the XZ plane (deposition direction). Novel insights include: (1) synergistic effects of SLM process parameters (laser power–scanning speed–hatch spacing) on defect evolution and microstructure uniformity; (2) atomistic mechanisms of α′→α + β phase transformation during post-heat treatment; and (3) corrosion–mechanical coupling behavior in harsh environments (e.g., marine and biomedical). Post-treatment strategies are refined: annealing at 800 °C for 2 h achieves 1099 MPa tensile strength and 17.4% elongation, while hot isostatic pressing (HIP) reduces porosity from 0.08% to 0.01% and weakens fatigue anisotropy. This review also identifies unresolved challenges (e.g., in situ defect monitoring and multi-field regulated performance) and proposes future directions (e.g., AI-driven process optimization and functional gradient structures). The homogeneity of methane hydrates in marine sediments plays a significant role in determining the efficiency of gas production during exploitation processes. Revealing their distribution mechanisms is crucial for optimizing the development of gas hydrates. This work systematically investigates the evolution patterns of effective thermal conductivity (ETC) during the formation and dissociation of methane hydrate in marine sediments, focusing on their major mineral components, such as quartz sand, illite, and montmorillonite. The results reveal the influence of thermal conductivity (TC) characteristics in porous media on hydrate phase transition behavior and spatial distribution. Key findings demonstrate that the TC characteristics of porous media are one of the dominant factors controlling hydrate formation rates. High-conductivity porous media significantly accelerate hydrate formation through efficient heat transfer. The swelling characteristics of montmorillonite and its coupling effects with salt ions impair heat transfer pathways, thereby inhibiting hydrate formation. Further analysis reveals that the spatial heterogeneity in reservoir TC is the primary intrinsic mechanism responsible for the macroscopic heterogeneous distribution of hydrates. Additionally, the hydrate dissociation process disrupts solid-state thermal bridging and generates gaseous thermal barriers, causing irreversible attenuation of reservoir TC. This phenomenon exacerbates the non-uniformity of the front during dissociation and increases the risk of secondary formation during exploitation. From a novel perspective of reservoir TC heterogeneity, this study establishes mechanistic links between the thermophysical properties of porous media and the spatial distribution patterns of hydrates. This provides significant theoretical guidance for resource exploration and the safe, efficient exploitation of marine gas hydrate reservoirs. Full article

The TC4 alloy is widely used in aerospace and marine engineering due to its excellent mechanical properties and corrosion resistance. However, titanium alloys often face fretting wear problems during use, which affect their long-term stability and service life. This study investigates the effects of surface mechanical attrition treatment (SMAT) time on the surface morphology, microstructure, stress distribution, and fretting wear properties of TC4 alloy. Characterization was performed using white light interferometry, EBSD, SEM, XRD, and microhardness measurements. The results show that SMAT significantly changes the surface and wear properties of TC4 alloy. With the increase in SMAT time from 0 to 240 min, the surface roughness (Ra), hardness, deformation depth, and stress gradually increase while the grain size decreases. After 240 min of SMAT, the TC4 alloy exhibited optimal fretting wear resistance, achieving a wear depth of 14.27 μm, a wear volume of 2.48 × 106 μm3, and a wear rate of 1.24 × 103 μm3/s. This represents a significant improvement, corresponding to an approximate 32.8% reduction in wear depth and a ~48% reduction in both wear volume and wear rate compared to the untreated sample. With the continuous rise in global plastic production and emissions, microplastics (MPs) have become ubiquitous across environmental compartments, including the atmosphere. Aging in natural settings substantially alters MP physicochemical properties and, in turn, their interactions with coexisting contaminants. Here, polyethylene (PE), polyethylene terephthalate (PET), and polystyrene (PS) were subjected to ultraviolet (UV)-accelerated aging and natural exposure in marine intertidal zones, freshwater lakes, and the atmosphere, and changes in their properties and tetracycline (TC) adsorption were systematically compared. Aging intensity followed the order seawater > freshwater > air. Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy showed the formation and enrichment of oxygen-containing functional groups, and naturally aged samples exhibited stronger oxidation signatures than those aged solely under UV irradiation. Adsorption kinetics indicated higher equilibrium capacities and rate constants for aged MPs; after 324 h of UV exposure in seawater, TC adsorption on PE, PS, and PET increased by 64.6%, 56.6%, and 64.0%, respectively. Mechanistic analysis suggests that surface roughening, oxygenated functional groups, and enhanced negative surface charge collectively promote TC adsorption, dominated by electrostatic interactions and hydrogen bonding. These findings not only elucidate how different aging pathways modulate the interactions between MPs and pollutants but also offer new insights into assessing the carrier potential of microplastics in environments such as the atmosphere and their adsorption of other contaminants. To enhance the abrasion resistance of TC4 titanium alloy and meet the demand for wear-resistant and corrosion-resistant friction pair materials for water-hydraulic components of marine equipment, the tribological properties of the material subsequent to ultrasonic rolling extrusion surface strengthening under seawater-lubricated conditions were investigated. The process of ultrasonic rolling machining was simulated and analyzed by the finite element method. The influence of process parameters on surface residual stress and surface roughness of TC4 was studied, and the appropriate range of process parameters was determined. The effects of key process parameters such as rolling times, static pressure, amplitude, and rotational speed on the surface properties of TC4 were investigated by the single-factor test method. Based on the response surface methodology, a prediction model of surface hardness and roughness of TC4 was constructed, and the process parameters were optimized and analyzed. The friction coefficient, wear amount, and wear rate of TC4 and CFRPEEK under seawater lubrication before and after strengthening were studied by wear tests. The wear morphologies of the specimens prior to and subsequent to strengthening were analyzed, and the friction and wear mechanisms were explored in depth. The results indicate that ultrasonic rolling extrusion surface strengthening process facilitates grain refinement in the surface layer of TC4, enhances surface hardness, and optimizes surface roughness, thereby improving its wear resistance. This is of guiding significance to the design and use of hydraulic components in seawater and has a promoting effect on the development of marine equipment. Full article

Suction anchors are widely used in marine engineering because of their easy installation, cost-effectiveness, and excellent load-bearing capacity. However, existing research on their bearing capacity has primarily focused on homogeneous soils, which fails to adequately reflect the actual bearing capacity of layered seabed soils. Therefore, this study conducted a series of numerical simulations to investigate the pullout bearing capacity of suction anchors subjected to inclined loads in upper-stiff–lower-soft layered clay. By considering the clay strength (Sum/kD) and soil layer thickness ratio (Th/L, Tc/L), this study systematically explores the influence of the optimal centerline loading depth (Zcl,opt), uniaxial ultimate bearing capacity (Hult and Vult), and the VH failure envelope of suction anchors. The results indicate that the layer thickness ratio Th/L of lightly overconsolidated clay (LOC) is the key factor influencing the Zcl,opt and ultimate bearing capacity Hult and Vult. An increase in Th/L significantly enhances the pullout resistance of suction anchors, which primarily results from the combined enhancement effect of lateral friction resistance and end resistance at the anchor–soil interface. The layered clay has a distinct influence on the horizontal and vertical bearing capacities of suction anchors. Based on the results of parameter analysis, a conservative analytical expression for the lower bound of the VH failure envelope curve is further proposed. The research conclusions provide a theoretical basis and engineering practice guidance for the optimized design and safety assessment of suction anchors in layered soil. Full article

Ocean surface wind vector (OWV) is a key variable for ocean remote sensing and tropical cyclone (TC) monitoring. This study presents the first comprehensive intercomparison of Ku-band OWV products from FY-3E/WindRAD and HY-2B/SCA scatterometers using full-year data from 2022 (583,805 spatiotemporal collocations), with both sensors sampling the morning–evening local-time sector in sun-synchronous orbits. Results indicate strong agreement in wind speed (R = 0.95; mean bias −0.47 m/s; RMSE 1.30 m/s) and wind direction (mean bias 0.22°; std 28.13°) for wind speeds ≥ 3.4 m/s (Beaufort scale B3 and above), with the highest consistency across Beaufort scale 3–8 (B3–B8); however, at wind speeds greater than 20.8 m/s (B9) the bias increases. A fusion leveraging FY-3E’s fine resolution and HY-2B’s wide coverage is implemented and applied to Super Typhoon Hinnamnor (2022), enhancing the spatial coverage and structural detail of TC winds. Quadrant 34 kt wind radii (R34) are estimated from the fused wind fields and evaluated against the best-track data from the Joint Typhoon Warning Center (JTWC), showing close agreement during compact, symmetric TC stages but larger differences during structural reorganization. Overall, the findings confirm inter-satellite consistency for the two Chinese scatterometers and demonstrate the practical value of a multi-source fusion approach that benefits TC monitoring, wind radii estimation, and marine weather services. PIWI-interacting RNAs (piRNAs) are small non-coding RNAs that interact with PIWI proteins and play essential roles in genome stability, gonadal development, and gametogenesis in animals. The Japanese flounder (Paralichthys olivaceus) is an important marine culture teleost in North Asia, showing pronounced sexual size dimorphism, where gynogenetic induction of all-female cohorts can markedly enhance production. However, the PIWI/piRNA pathway in gynogenetic diploid P. olivaceus, which often exhibit gonadal dysgenesis, poor gamete quality, and low fertilization rates, remains poorly understood. In this study, RNA-seq and small RNA-seq data from 11 tissues and 6 developmental stages of common P. olivaceus, as well as the gonads of gynogenetic P. olivaceus, were analyzed to characterize the PIWI/piRNA pathway and its roles in transposon and gene regulation within the germline. The results showed that PIWI/piRNA genes were predominantly expressed in gonads and early embryogenesis in common P. olivaceus, with the highest expression in testis. Clustered piRNAs were identified in the testis and early embryos of common P. olivaceus, which targeted multiple transposon and gene families. Intriguingly, gynogenetic P. olivaceus gonads harbored abundant clustered piRNAs not only in the testes but also in the ovaries, both targeting similar transposon families as that in common P. olivaceus. Notably, the DNA transposon Tc1/Mariner family and pim genes were the most heavily targeted by piRNAs in gynogenetic P. olivaceus, with testis-biased expression. Expanded pim genes were identified in P. olivaceus, overlapping with piRNA clusters, and the in vitro test in P. olivaceus testes revealed that the expanded pim genes may be pseudogenes as a piRNA cluster reference to generate piRNAs regulating the conventional pim members. These unique features of the PIWI/piRNA pathway in gynogenetic diploid P. olivaceus may underline their impaired reproductive ability, and have important theoretical and practical implications for teleost gynogenetic breeding. The anisotropic mechanical properties of selective laser melting (SLM)-processed Ti-6Al-4V (TC4) alloy hinder its deployment in polar marine equipment. This study systematically probes the relationships between laser scanning strategies (unidirectional vs. 67°-rotated scanning between layers), notch orientation (governing loading direction), and cryogenic impact energy of SLM-TC4. Charpy impact tests from −60 °C to 20 °C were performed on V-notched specimens fabricated with distinct scanning strategies and notch orientations (top/side surfaces). The analysis of impact energy data and macro/micro-fractography demonstrates that impact energy declines markedly with decreasing temperature, showing a 25–35% reduction at −60 °C versus 20 °C while exhibiting enhanced data consistency under cryogenic conditions. Notably, specimens fabricated with 67°-rotated scanning between layers achieve higher impact toughness than unidirectionally scanned equivalents. Moreover, for identical scanning strategies, side-notched specimens consistently outperform top-notched specimens, evidencing superior interfacial bonding strength between deposited layers relative to bonding within individual layers. Within individual layers, toughness normal to the laser scan path exceeds that parallel to the path. However, controlling ductile-to-brittle transition behavior and precluding brittle failure are imperative for SLM-TC4 components in polar cryogenic service. This work delivers essential quantitative benchmarks and experimental validation for optimizing SLM processing in critical polar vessel components. Full article

Tetracyclic bis-piperidine alkaloids (TcBPAs) are structurally complex natural products primarily isolated from marine sponges of the order Haplosclerida. Distinguished by their intricate architecture, TcBPAs feature two central piperidine units linked by dual macrocyclic rings. These unique structural motifs contribute significantly to their biological activities. For example, TcBPAs exhibit antiproliferative activities at low micromolar concentrations across various cancer cell lines, including leukemia, melanoma, breast, colon, fibrosarcoma, and glioblastoma. Despite this promising therapeutic profile, the structural intricacy of TcBPAs has posed considerable challenges to the development of efficient synthetic methodologies, thereby limiting comprehensive exploration and potential clinical advancement. This review highlights recent progress and persisting challenges in the synthesis, structural analysis, and biological evaluation of TcBPAs, underscoring their therapeutic potential in anticancer drug discovery. Low-surface-energy and wettability-based antifouling coatings have garnered increasing attention in marine applications owing to their environmentally friendly characteristics. However, their limited functionality often results in suboptimal long-term antifouling performance, particularly under dynamic marine conditions. To address these limitations, a polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS)-based slippery (PSL) coating was fabricated on TC4 titanium alloy by integrating surface silanization via (3-Aminopropyl)triethoxysilane (APTES), antimicrobial Ag-TiO2 nanoparticles, laser-induced hierarchical microtextures, and silicone oil infusion. The resulting PSL coating exhibited excellent oil retention and stable interfacial slipperiness even after thermal aging. Compared with bare TC4, low-surface-energy Ag-containing coatings, Ag-containing superhydrophobic coatings, and conventional slippery liquid-infused porous surfaces (SLIPS), the PSL coating demonstrated markedly superior resistance to protein adsorption, bacterial attachment, and diatom settlement, indicating an enhanced synergistic antifouling effect. Furthermore, it significantly reduced the diatom concentration in the surrounding medium without complete eradication, underscoring its eco-friendly and non-disruptive antifouling mechanism. This study offers a scalable, durable, and environmentally benign antifouling strategy for marine surface protection. Full article
