Rainfall contributes to slope instability when infiltrating water reduces matric suction and elevates pore water pressure beyond critical thresholds. Empirical rainfall intensity–duration (I-D) thresholds define the minimum rainfall conditions necessary to initiate landslides and are widely adopted in regional early warning systems. This study derives I-D thresholds for shallow landslide initiation in South-East Queensland (SEQ), Australia, using quantile regression applied to 104 rainfall-induced shallow landslide events recorded between 1974 and 2018. Thresholds at the 2nd, 10th, 50th, and 90th percentiles were derived over a duration range of 0.3 to 383 h and intensity range of 0.15 to 13.7 mm h−1. The 2nd percentile, adopted as the conservative regional early warning threshold, is expressed as I = 0.719 × D−0.220, where I is rainfall intensity (mm h−1) and D is event duration (h). To facilitate inter-regional comparability, normalised thresholds expressed in terms of mean annual precipitation (MAP) were also derived, yielding a 2nd percentile threshold of IMAP = 6.070 × 10−4 × D−0.207. Both I-D and IMAP -D thresholds fall substantially below existing global benchmarks, reflecting the pronounced susceptibility of SEQ’s deeply weathered residual soils to infiltration-driven failure. Independent validation against real-time tilt sensor and volumetric water content monitoring data from five kinematic failure events recorded at Maleny, Queensland (2016–2020), confirmed that all events plotted above the 2nd percentile threshold, with zero false negatives. The results provide a quantitative, operationally validated framework for regional shallow landslide early warning in subtropical Australia. Full article

Environmental variability, such as fluctuations in rainfall, can strongly influence spider population dynamics and assemblage composition. The study examined whether rainfall in the preceding three months, i.e., wet or dry conditions, using three different methods in the same sites within a eucalyptus forest, influenced the overall species and abundance of spiders captured and thus how wet or dry conditions influenced the overall spider assemblage and community structure. In south-east Queensland, Australia, rainfall is highly variable throughout the year and does not conform to distinct wet or dry seasons; therefore, “wet” and “dry” classifications in this study refer specifically to preceding rainfall conditions rather than seasonal categories. Sampling was conducted during dry conditions (75 mL of rain in the three months preceding collection) and during wet conditions (300 mL of rain in the three months preceding collection) to assess overall differences in spider richness, diversity and assemblage composition between wet and dry conditions by combining data from the three sampling methods. Species richness was significantly higher in dry conditions compared to the wet conditions. Diversity indices indicated that the more common spider species remained consistent between wet and dry conditions. Ordination analyses revealed changes between wet and dry conditions, primarily driven by fluctuations with less common spider species, rather than community changes at the family level. For vibration-based collections of spiders, only 30.5% of species overlapped between wet and dry conditions, whereas family-level overlap was 75%, indicating rainfall-driven changes occurred primarily at the species level rather than at the family level. Spider abundance was consistently higher under dry conditions across all methods. In vibration-based collections, 90% of species was collected within 60 min. However, using this method, species appeared more slowly under wet conditions, suggesting that rainfall may influence spider responses to vibrational stimuli. Survey method strongly influenced species richness with night hand collection of spiders resulting in the greatest number of species observed. Spider species richness and diversity collected using the vibration-based method were similar in wet and dry conditions and between sites. This supports the reliability of this method for sampling spiders that respond to vibrations and should be used complementarily with other survey methods. Full article

We describe five new species of Abantiades from Australia, four from Western Australia (WA) and one from south-east Queensland. Of the four WA species, three are from the Geraldton Sandplains biogeographic region (Abantiades profundus sp. nov., A. kolpodes sp. nov., and A. patella sp. nov.), and the fourth (A. lepusaures sp. nov.) was found in the Eastern Goldfields region. The Queensland species (A. incognito sp. nov.) comes from the south-eastern Queensland biogeographic region. Our five new species demonstrated the importance of wing morphology, genitalia and antennal structure in diagnosing Abantiades species. However, antennal structure as a diagnostic character defining these species highlighted historical problems that, in part, were used to erect Trictena and Bordaia, recently synonymised into Abantiades. To explore this further, we used mtDNA COI ‘barcode’ sequences and compared our new species with all currently available species for the genus Abantiades. Full article

Each year, hundreds of female koalas are presented to koala hospitals suffering from a range of morbidities, many of which require euthanasia for animal welfare reasons. These koalas represent a possible resource for genetic recovery by means of oocyte retrieval for genome banking or use in assisted reproductive technology. To examine the feasibility of koala oocyte recovery, this study conducted a preliminary survey of follicular activity and disease presence in fixed ovarian tissues from koala cadavers in South East Queensland. Ovarian activity and pathology were assessed by gross examination and histology. Bursal pathology was categorized into koalas with no, small (<10 mm diameter), moderate (10–20 mm diameter), or large (>20 mm diameter) sized bursae, whereas uterine pathology was diagnosed by an experienced reproductive pathologist. Antral follicles were observed in 94.4% of ovaries recovered from koalas with no bursal or uterine pathology (n = 18/44), 95.2% of the ovaries of koalas with bursal but no uterine pathology (n = 11/44), 100% of the ovaries of koalas showing only uterine pathology (n = 4/4) and 89.5% of ovaries from koalas with both bursal and uterine pathology (n = 11/44). Of the fixed ovarian tissue suitable for PCR Chlamydia detection (35/44), none were positive. As proof of concept, oocytes were also collected and evaluated from six koala cadavers within 2 h post-mortem. Although further studies are required to determine the quality and viability of the retrieved koala oocytes, our preliminary survey provides strong evidence that ovarian activity mostly continues unabated, irrespective of reproductive pathology, and that oocytes can be recovered successfully. Rural communities face persistent transport disadvantages due to low population density, limited-service availability, and high operational costs, restricting access to essential services and exacerbating social inequality. Autonomous public transport systems offer a transformative solution by enabling flexible, cost-effective, and inclusive mobility options. This study investigates the operational determinants for autonomous road-based transit systems in rural and peri-urban South-East Queensland (SEQ), employing a structured survey of 273 residents and analytical approaches, including General Additive Model (GAM) and Extreme Gradient Boosting (XGBoost). The findings indicate that small shuttles suit flexible, non-routine trips, with leisure travelers showing the highest importance (Gain = 0.473) and university precincts demonstrating substantial influence (Gain = 0.253), both confirmed as significant predictors by GAM (EDF = 0.964 and EDF = 0.909, respectively). Minibus shuttles enhance first-mile and last-mile connectivity, driven primarily by leisure travelers (Gain = 0.275) and tourists (Gain = 0.199), with shopping trips identified as a significant non-linear predictor by GAM (EDF = 1.819). Standard-sized buses are optimal for high-capacity transport, particularly for school children (Gain = 0.427) and school trips (Gain = 0.148), with GAM confirming their significance (EDF = 1.963 and EDF = 0.834, respectively), demonstrating strong predictive accuracy. Hybrid models integrating autonomous and conventional buses are preferred over complete replacement, with autonomous taxis raising equity concerns for low-income individuals (Gain = 0.047, indicating limited positive influence). Integration with Mobility-as-a-Service platforms demonstrates strong, particularly for special events (Gain = 0.290) and leisure travelers (Gain = 0.252). These insights guide policymakers in designing autonomous road-based transit systems to improve rural connectivity and quality of life. Full article

Accurate modelling of near surface wind speeds is essential for robust resource assessment, turbine design, and grid integration. This study presents a unified framework comparing four candidate marginal distributions—Weibull, Gamma, Lognormal, and Generalised Extreme Value (GEV)—across 21 years of daily observations from 11 sites in New South Wales and southern Queensland, Australia. Parameters are estimated by maximum likelihood, with L-moments used when numerical fitting fails. Univariate goodness-of-fit is evaluated via information criteria (Akaike Information Criterion, AIC; Bayesian Information Criterion, BIC) and distributional tests (Anderson–Darling, Cramér–von Mises, Kolmogorov–Smirnov). To capture spatial dependence, we fit an 11-dimensional regular vine (“R-vine”) copula to the probability-integral-transformed data, selecting pair-copula families by AIC and estimating parameters by sequential likelihood. A composite score (70% univariate, 30% copula) ranks distributions per location. Results demonstrate that Lognormal best matches central behaviour at most sites, Weibull remains competitive for bulk modelling, Gamma often excels in moderate tails, and GEV best represents extremes. All turbine yield results presented are illustrative, showing how statistical choices impact energy estimates; they should not be interpreted as operational forecasts. In a case study, 5000 joint simulations from the top-two models drive IEC V90 and E82 power curves, revealing up to 10% variability in annual energy yield due solely to marginal choice. This workflow provides a replicable template for comprehensive wind resource and load hazard analysis in complex terrains. Full article

Methane emissions from freshwater reservoirs represent a globally relevant greenhouse gas source, which are estimated to range from 3% to 10% of all global anthropogenic methane emissions. However, there is high uncertainty in estimating reservoir emissions on local to global scales due to a combination of data paucity in key regions, particularly in the Southern Hemisphere, and challenges monitoring emission pathways. The key to improved spatially and temporally representative estimation of emission rates is to better understand the primary drivers of emission pathways, in particular, ebullition. We examine ebullition from 15 freshwater storages located in the Southern Hemisphere subtropical (South East Queensland) and temperate (Tasmania) regions using a combination of optical methane detection to develop the high-resolution mapping of ebullition zones and floating chamber incubation within ebullition zones to quantify areal emission rates. We demonstrate the equivalent water level, through air pressure or physical water level change, as a key driver of ebullition and examine the implications for spatially and temporally representative estimation of reservoir emissions. This study represents the largest broadscale ebullition survey undertaken across Australian temperate and subtropical reservoirs. The study findings are of broad relevance to scientists and corporate and government entities navigating the complexities of estimating greenhouse gas emissions from reservoirs and related policy instruments. Rural public transport networks face significant challenges, often characterised by suboptimal service quality. With advancements in technology, various applications have been explored to address these issues. Autonomous Demand-Responsive Transits (ADRTs) represent a promising solution that has been investigated over recent years. Their potential to enhance the overall quality of transport systems and promote sustainable transportation is well-recognised. In our research study, we evaluated the viability of ADRTs for rural networks. Our methodology focused on two primary areas: the suitability of ADRTs (considering vehicle type, service offerings, trip purposes, demographic groups, and land use) and the broader impacts of ADRTs (including passenger performance, social impacts, and environmental impacts). Perceptions of ADRT suitability peaked for university precincts and 24/7 operations. However, they were less favoured by mobility-disadvantaged groups (disabled, seniors, and school children). We also examined demographic heterogeneity and assessed the influence of demographic factors (age, gender, education, occupation, household income level, and disability status) on the implementation of ADRTs in rural settings. The findings delineate the varied perceptions across these socio-demographic strata, underscoring the necessity for demographic-specific trials. Consequently, we advocate for the implementation of ADRT services tailored to accommodate the diverse needs of these demographic cohorts. Full article

Introduction: Resource trade-offs are a universal feature of decision-making in healthcare. Public funding for home care is an example of a complex resource allocation decision, requiring balance between the needs of the individual and the capacity of the welfare system to meet those needs across the population. Under consumer-directed care policies, responsibility for resource allocation decisions rests with the care recipient, but there is no existing measure of allocative efficiency resulting from these consumer-led decisions. Our research considers resource allocation decisions by home care package recipients under consumer-directed care and evaluates the consistency of consumer-directed resource allocation with medically identified recommendations. Method: Retrospective cohort analysis of twenty home care package resource allocations made by home care package recipients in South-East Queensland, compared to associated medically identified needs and discussions with a potential service provider. Findings: Resource allocation decisions in the Australian home care setting are complex, multi-faceted, and made in highly uncertain environments. There are significant differences between services and equipment recommendations made by assessment teams, service providers, and home care recipient choices. Discussion: Awareness of the decision-making process and resulting decisions provides a foundation for future research to simplify decision-making for home care package recipients without sacrificing autonomy, leading to improved resource allocation efficiency and home care program outcomes. Conclusion: Consumer-directed care is a globally popular policy position to allocate public funds related to health care needs, despite uncertainty around the impact of this policy on program outcomes. Our analysis suggests further understanding of factors influencing resource allocation decisions is needed to define appropriate supports for effective decision-making in home care resource allocation, and further research effort is required to determine efficient resource allocation to inform policy changes, irrespective of the decision-maker. Highly effective direct-acting antiviral (DAA) therapies for hepatitis C (HCV) have been available in Australian prisons since 2016. To address treatment interruption following release from prisons, the Queensland Injector’s Health Network (QuIHN) launched a Prison Transition Service (PTS) in south-east Queensland, Australia. Presently, the factors associated with continuity of post-release HCV care are poorly understood. The objective of this qualitative study was to explore the barriers and facilitators to HCV treatment among people recently released from prisons among PTS clients and stakeholders. Qualitative interviews were conducted with 27 participants, namely, 13 clients and 14 stakeholders (health and community support workers) of the PTS. We conducted thematic analysis using the framework of person-, provider-, and system-level barriers and facilitators. Person-level barriers included competing priorities post-release, while facilitators included self-improvement after treatment completion, preventing transmission to family, and social support. Provider-level treatment barriers included enacted stigma, limited prison health service capacity, and post-release health system challenges. Systemic barriers included stigma relating to HCV, injecting drug use, incarceration, and limited availability of harm reduction services. Policy changes and investment are required to expand HCV treatment in south-east Queensland prisons to facilitate patient navigation into community care. In terms of reducing stigma among health staff and the general community towards people with HCV, a history of incarceration and/or who inject drugs is crucial for improving treatment rates. Strategies such as peer-led or nurse-practitioner-led models of care may help improve treatment completion. Continuity of HCV treatment post-release from prisons is essential for Australia to meet the WHO’s 2030 HCV elimination target. Full article

To characterize the naturalized population of burr medic (Medicago polymorpha L.), a valuable pasture legume, in subtropical Queensland, Australia, a collection of 1747 lines from 107 sites in 11 regions was grown, and 26 phenotypic and agronomic attributes were recorded. This data matrix was analyzed by cluster, principal co-ordinates, discriminant and correlation analyses to examine line relationships based on plant attributes and their association with site characteristics of climate and soil. Among the wide polymorphism of attributes across the collection zone, there were a number of notable phenotypic associations. One of these, with large green leaves, minimally dentate leaf margins, and light purple petioles, was widely distributed. Three others, one with a distinctive magenta leaf mark, dark purple petioles, and an upright habit; one with those same attributes but with a prostrate habit; and one with grey-green leaves, high frost resistance, and the ability to stay green and to produce high pod yields, were associated with climatic and soil characteristics in the north, east, and south of the collection zone, respectively. Days to flowering were longer in lines from saline soils at lower altitude, and plant vigor was greatest in lines from more fertile soils with higher rainfall. A wide variation in time to flower of lines at all collection sites contributes to the adaptation of M. polymorpha in subtropical Queensland and potentially to its persistence with future climate change. Habitat loss due to wildfire is an increasing problem internationally for threatened animal species, particularly tree-dependent and arboreal animals. The koala (Phascolartos cinereus) is endangered in most of its range, and large areas of forest were burnt by widespread wildfires in Australia in 2019/2020, mostly areas dominated by eucalypts, which provide koala habitats. We studied the impact of fire and three subsequent years of recovery on a property in South-East Queensland, Australia. A classified Differenced Normalised Burn Ratio (dNBR) calculated from pre- and post-burn Sentinel-2 scenes encompassing the local study area was used to assess regional impact of fire on koala-habitat forest types. The geometrically structured composite burn index (GeoCBI), a field-based assessment, was used to classify fire severity impact. To detect lower levels of forest recovery, a manual classification of the multitemporal dNBR was used, enabling the direct comparison of images between recovery years. In our regional study area, the most suitable koala habitat occupied only about 2%, and about 10% of that was burnt by wildfire. From the five koala habitat forest types studied, one upland type was burnt more severely and extensively than the others but recovered vigorously after the first year, reaching the same extent of recovery as the other forest types. The two alluvial forest types showed a negligible fire impact, likely due to their sheltered locations. In the second year, all the impacted forest types studied showed further, almost equal, recovery. In the third year of recovery, there was almost no detectable change and therefore no more notable vegetative growth. Our field data revealed that the dNBR can probably only measure the general vegetation present and not tree recovery via epicormic shooting and coppicing. Eucalypt foliage growth is a critical resource for the koala, so field verification seems necessary unless more-accurate remote sensing methods such as hyperspectral imagery can be implemented. This study combined a catchment model and one-dimensional lake model (GLM-AED) to simulate the response of hydrodynamics and water quality of subtropical Advancetown Lake (South-East Queensland, Australia) to future changing climates from 2040 to 2069 and 2070 to 2099 under Representative Concentration Pathway (RCP) 4.5 and 8.5 and increased water demand from a 50% increase in population over current levels. The simulation adequately reproduced water temperature (RMSE of 0.6 °C), dissolved oxygen (DO) (RMSE of 2 mg/L), and other water quality variables, such as nitrogen, phosphorus, and chlorophyll a (Chl-a). Warming temperatures dominated the change in thermal structure and hydrodynamic status of the lake under future climate change conditions. Projected changes in precipitation and hydrological response from the upstream catchment might, however, partly offset the warming temperatures under future climate change. Increased water withdrawal due to population growth, which involved water extraction from the epilimnion, showed antagonistic effects on water stability compared to those from climate change. Under a high emission scenario of RCP8.5 during the 2080s, there is an increased likelihood of winter turnover failure in Advancetown Lake. Nutrient concentrations were simulated to decrease from reduced catchment loads under future climate change conditions. However, Chl-a concentrations were simulated to increase, especially during the period after winter turnover, under these future conditions. The depth of the hypoxia front during stratification is expected to decrease and move towards the water surface, attributable to the warming water temperatures and prolonged thermal stratification, which might affect biogeochemical processes and exchange fluxes between the hypolimnion and bottom sediments. These potential changes may present challenges for water resource management under future conditions of climate change and population growth. Full article

In this study, we employ a dual-objective optimization model, utilizing the Implicit Modified Coverage Location Problem (MCLP-Implicit) approach, to determine an appropriate fire station allocation. Our objectives encompass maximizing coverage in areas with a heightened projected demand, based on socioeconomic predictors of building fires, and concurrently minimizing the distance of uncovered demand zones to the closest fire station. The challenges of this model reflect the criticality of strategic placement, aiming for not just swift response times but also the complete coverage of a region with priority given to subregions with a pronounced potential for incidents. The applicability of the proposed approach is demonstrated through a case study in south-east Queensland. Our findings indicate that there is a tangible justification for adopting this model. The broader coverage and wider spread of locations it produces can greatly aid in the dynamic deployment of personnel during surges caused by seasonal fluctuations or unforeseen calamities. By weaving in socioeconomic aspects into demand predictions, our model has also maintained appropriate coverage to socioeconomically disadvantaged communities in the region. Nevertheless, it is paramount to underline the recommendation that further research should account for road connectivity—a pivotal factor when pinpointing these locations in the real world. This research paves the way for enriched insights in long-term urban planning and fire response protocol crafting, especially in regions mirroring similar socioeconomic profiles or risks of natural disasters, not to mention its commercial implications to the relevant industry servicing the fire and rescue authorities. The adoption of autonomous demand-responsive transit (ADRT) to support regular public transport has the potential to enhance sustainable mobility. There is a dearth of research on the socio-demographic characteristics associated with perceived opportunities and challenges regarding ADRT adoption in Australia. In this research, we fill this knowledge gap by determining socio-demographic predictors of perceptions and attitudes towards ADRT, specifically autonomous shuttle buses (ASBs), among adult residents of South East Queensland. This study incorporates a review of prior global studies, a stated preference survey distributed across the case study region, and descriptive and logistic regression analysis. We found that the main perceived opportunity of ASBs is reduced congestion/emissions, while the primary anticipated challenge relates to unreliable technology. Fully employed respondents are likely to be more familiar with autonomous vehicles. Females and those from lower-income households are less likely to have ridden in an autonomous vehicle. Males, those who are younger, have high employment, hail from higher-income households, and with no driver’s licence are all more favourable towards ASBs. Males, those with high employment, and without driver’s licence are likely to be more concerned about traffic accidents when using ASBs. Less-educated respondents and those living in peri-urban areas are likely to be more concerned about fares. Insights are drawn from the current study to inform policymakers to consider key challenges (e.g., trust issues) and target groups (particularly females) in planning public communication strategies to enhance receptiveness to ADRT.
