Background: Estimating race times for open-water swimming based on pool swimming times could be useful for talent identification and training optimisation. We aimed to compare the swimming speeds of the world’s top and other swimmers in the 2023 Aquatics Championship men’s 10 km OWS race. Methods: Sixty-five swimmers were divided into four groups: G1 (1st–10th positions), G2 (11st–30th positions), G3 (31st–47th positions), and G4 (48th–65th positions). Swimming speed, stroke frequency (SF), and stroke length (SL) for each lap (laps 1–6) were recorded. Critical speed (CS) was calculated from each participant’s personal best times in the 400, 800, and 1500 m freestyle events in the pool. Swimming speed against CS was calculated (%CS). Results: The top performance group (G1) maintained their swimming speed from beginning (lap 1, 1.53 m/s) to end (lap 6, 1.50 m/s), at 92.7 ± 1.9% of CS, characterised by longer SL (1.26 m) and lower SF (72.86 rpm). G3 and G4 were unable to maintain their swimming speed, which decreased from G3: 97.64 ± 1.62% and G4: 96.10 ± 1.96% of CS at lap 1 to G3: 88.39 ± 3.78% and G4: 85.13 ± 5.04% at lap 6. This reduction in swimming speed is consistent with the increased reliance on anaerobic metabolism reported in previous studies under similar conditions. Conclusions: Race pacing for maintaining speeds of 92%CS throughout the race could be an important resilient index in open-water swimming. %CS might be a useful index for estimating the athletic performance level in open-water swimming. Segmentation of Stone Slab Cracks Based on an Improved YOLOv8 Algorithm

To tackle the challenges of detecting complex cracks on large stone slabs with noisy textures, this paper presents the first domain-optimized framework for stone slab cracks, an improved semantic segmentation model (YOLOv8-Seg) synergistically integrating U-NetV2, DSConv, and DySample. The network uses the lightweight U-NetV2 backbone combined with dynamic feature recalibration and multi-scale refinement to better capture fine crack details. The dynamic up-sampling module (DySample) helps to adaptively reconstruct curved boundaries. In addition, the dynamic snake convolution head (DSConv) improves the model’s ability to follow irregular crack shapes. Experiments on the custom-built ST stone crack dataset show that YOLOv8-Seg achieves an mAP@0.5 of 0.856 and an mAP@0.5–0.95 of 0.479. The model also reaches a mean intersection over union (MIoU) of 79.17%, outperforming both baseline and mainstream segmentation models. Ablation studies confirm the value of each module. Comparative tests and industrial validation demonstrate stable performance across different stone materials and textures and a 30% false-positive reduction in real production environments. Overall, YOLOv8-Seg greatly improves segmentation accuracy and robustness in industrial crack detection on natural stone slabs, offering a strong solution for intelligent visual inspection in real-world applications. In the globalizing world, raising individuals equipped with 21st-century skills is very important for the economic development of countries. Educational practices that support 21st-century skills are also gaining importance. In this context, STEM education, an interdisciplinary educational practice that develops 21st-century skills, emerges. STEM education aims to contribute to sustainable development by training individuals equipped with 21st-century skills and competencies. In a globalizing world, countries must set sustainable development goals to gain a foothold in the global market. In today’s world, where artificial intelligence also shows itself in every area of human life, it is possible to discuss the importance of artificial intelligence-supported STEM education. This study aims to reveal the educational needs of primary school teachers regarding artificial intelligence-supported STEM education. The study was conducted according to the phenomenological design, and the data were collected using a semi-structured interview form and literature review techniques. The thematic analysis method was used in the analysis of the data. According to the research results obtained from the findings of the study, teachers need training on 21st-century skills, interdisciplinary thinking, technology integration into courses, and artificial intelligence practices in courses to develop their knowledge and skills in the context of artificial intelligence-supported STEM education. Clinical Performance of Analog and Digital 18F-FDG PET/CT in Pediatric Epileptogenic Zone Localization: Preliminary Results

Background: Despite its central role in pediatric pre-surgical evaluation of drug-resistant focal epilepsy, conventional analog 18F-fluorodeoxyglucose (18F-FDG) PET/CT (aPET) systems often yield modest epileptogenic zone (EZ) detection rates (~50–60%). Silicon photomultiplier–based digital PET/CT (dPET) promises enhanced image quality, but its performance in pediatric epilepsy remains untested. Methods: We retrospectively analyzed 22 children (mean age 11.5 ± 2.6 years) who underwent interictal brain 18F-FDG PET/CT: 11 on an analog system (Discovery ST, 2018–2019) and 11 on a digital system (Biograph Vision 450, 2020–2021). Three blinded nuclear medicine physicians independently scored EZ localization and image quality (4-point scale); post-surgical histology and ≥1-year clinical follow-up served as reference. Results: The EZ was correctly identified in 8/11 analog scans (72.7%) versus 10/11 digital scans (90.9%). Average image quality was significantly higher with dPET (3.0 ± 0.9 vs. 2.1 ± 0.9; p < 0.05), and inter-reader agreement improved from good (ICC = 0.63) to excellent (ICC = 0.91). Conclusions: Our preliminary findings suggest that dPET enhances image clarity and reader consistency, potentially improving localization accuracy in pediatric epilepsy presurgical workups. The widespread adoption of liquefied natural gas (LNG) as a marine fuel has driven the development of LNG bunkering operations in global ports. Major international hubs, such as Shenzhen Port, have implemented ship-to-ship (STS) bunkering practices. However, this process entails unique safety risks, particularly hazards associated with vapor cloud dispersion caused by bunkering hose releases. This study employs the Phast software developed by DNV to systematically simulate LNG release scenarios during STS operations, integrating real-world meteorological data and storage conditions. The dynamic effects of transfer flow rates, release heights, and release directions on vapor cloud dispersion are quantitatively analyzed under daytime and nighttime conditions. The results demonstrate that transfer flow rate significantly regulates dispersion range, with recommendations to limit the rate below 1500 m3/h and prioritize daytime operations to mitigate risks. Release heights exceeding 10 m significantly amplify dispersion effects, particularly at night (nighttime dispersion area at a height of 20 m is 3.5 times larger than during the daytime). Optimizing release direction effectively suppresses dispersion, with vertically downward releases exhibiting minimal impact. Horizontal releases require avoidance of downwind alignment, and daytime operations are prioritized to reduce lateral dispersion risks. Full article

Background/Objectives: Maternal overweight and obesity are critical factors increasing the risk of various pregnancy complications. Maternal obesity can lead to fetal macrosomia and a heightened risk of intrauterine death, with long-term implications for the child’s health. This study aimed to analyze the incidence of obesity and its impact on pregnancy outcomes in women who delivered by cesarean section at the University Hospital “St. George”, Plovdiv. Methods: A single-center retrospective cohort study was conducted. The documentary method was used for gathering data. Records were randomly selected. The statistical methods used included mean values, confidence intervals (of mean), frequency, and the Kolmogorov–Smirnov test for normality of distribution. Data comparisons were performed using the Mann–Whitney test. Mean values of numerical variables were compared using the independent samples t-test. Results: In total, 46.36% of women in this study were affected by obesity to varying degrees, and the proportion of women who were overweight at the end of their pregnancy was 37.85%. In the studied cohort, 15.99% of women were affected by hypertensive complications. This significant prevalence of obesity highlights concerns regarding body weight among women of reproductive age. This study emphasized a strong correlation between maternal obesity, particularly severe obesity, and the occurrence of preeclampsia. Conclusions: In this study among women who delivered by cesarean section, a significant proportion of them were affected by overweight and obesity. Data for our country are insufficient, and a more in-depth study of this problem is needed. Future research should explore the long-term impacts of maternal obesity on the health of the mother and the newborn. Full article

Background: Aortic stenosis (AS) is the most common valvular heart disease, associated with poor outcomes if left untreated. Current guidelines recommend that transcatheter aortic valve implantation (TAVI) procedures be performed in hospitals with an on-site cardiac surgery unit due to potential complications requiring surgical intervention. Objective: Based on our experience, we evaluated the feasibility and outcomes of implementing a TAVI program in a cardiology department without an on-site cardiac surgery unit, in collaboration with a remote hospital for surgical backup. Methods: The TAVI program involved pre- and post-procedural evaluations conducted at Meir Medical Center (Kfar Saba, Israel) with a remote surgical team available. The study population included 149 consecutive patients with severe aortic stenosis treated at the Meir valve clinic between November 2019 and December 2023. Procedures were performed by the center’s interventional cardiology team. Results: The mean age of the 149 patients was 80 ± 6 years, and 75 (50%) were female. The average STS score was 4.3, and the EuroSCORE II was 3.1. Among the patients, 68 (45%) were classified as New York Heart Association (NYHA) class III-IV. The valve types used included ACURATE neo2 (57 patients, 38%), Edwards SAPIEN 3 (43 patients, 28%), Evolut-PRO (41 patients, 27%), and Navitor (7 patients, 4%). There were no cases of moderate to severe paravalvular leak and no elevated post-implantation gradients, and there was no need for urgent cardiac surgery. One case of valve embolization was successfully managed percutaneously during the procedure. In-hospital follow-up revealed no deaths and only one major vascular complication. At one-year follow-up, six patients had died, with only one death attributed to cardiac causes. Conclusions: Our findings support the safe and effective performance of transfemoral TAVI in cardiology departments without on-site cardiac surgery, in collaboration with a remote surgical team. Further prospective, multicenter studies are warranted to confirm these results and guide broader clinical implementation of this practice. Full article

Exposure to per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFASs) can cause detrimental health effects. The consumption of contaminated food is viewed as a major exposure pathway for humans, but the relationship between agriculture and PFASs has not been investigated thoroughly, and it is becoming a pressing issue since health advisories are continuously being reassessed. This semi-systematic literature review connects the release, environmental fate, and agriculture uptake of PFASs to enhance comprehension and identify knowledge gaps which limit accurate risk assessment. It focuses on the heavily agricultural state of Minnesota, USA, which is representative of the large Midwestern US Corn Belt in terms of agricultural activities, because PFASs have been monitored in Minnesota since the beginning of the 21st century. PFAS contamination is a complex issue due to the over 14,000 individual PFAS compounds which have unique chemical properties that interact differently with air, water, soil, and biological systems. Moreover, the lack of field studies and monitoring of agricultural sites makes accurate risk assessments challenging. Researchers, policymakers, and farmers must work closely together to reduce the risk of PFAS exposure as the understanding of their potential health effects increases and legacy PFASs are displaced with shorter fluorinated replacements. To address the limitations of the existing cotton seedling growth prediction methods in field environments, specifically, poor representation of spatiotemporal features and low visual fidelity in texture rendering, this paper proposes an algorithm for the prediction of cotton seedling growth from images based on FCA-STNet. The model leverages historical sequences of cotton seedling RGB images to generate an image of the predicted growth at time t + 1 and extracts 37 phenotypic traits from the predicted image. A novel STNet structure is designed to enhance the representation of spatiotemporal dependencies, while an Adaptive Fine-Grained Channel Attention (FCA) module is integrated to capture both global and local feature information. This attention mechanism focuses on individual cotton plants and their textural characteristics, effectively reducing the interference from common field-related challenges such as insufficient lighting, leaf fluttering, and wind disturbances. The experimental results demonstrate that the predicted images achieved an MSE of 0.0086, MAE of 0.0321, SSIM of 0.8339, and PSNR of 20.7011 on the test set, representing improvements of 2.27%, 0.31%, 4.73%, and 11.20%, respectively, over the baseline STNet. The method outperforms several mainstream spatiotemporal prediction models. Furthermore, the majority of the predicted phenotypic traits exhibited correlations with actual measurements with coefficients above 0.8, indicating high prediction accuracy. The proposed FCA-STNet model enables visually realistic prediction of cotton seedling growth in open-field conditions, offering a new perspective for research in growth prediction. Full article

The Mid-Piacenzian Warm Interval (MPWI) is marked by warmer temperatures and higher atmospheric CO2 levels than today, making it an analogue for late-21st-century-warming, whereas the early Pleistocene cooling is more like today. We compare seasonal growth temperatures derived from oxygen isotope ratios (δ18O) and clumped isotopes (∆47) in Mercenaria. Modern shells were previously collected from coastal NC. The fossil shells are from the Duplin (MPWI) and Waccamaw Formations (early Pleistocene), NC. Oxygen isotope ratios range from −2.2‰ to 2.3‰ (modern), −0.9‰ to 2.4‰ (MPWI), and −0.9‰ to 2.9‰ (early Pleistocene). The values of Δ47 range from 0.576‰ to 0.639‰ (modern), 0.566‰ to 0.621‰ (MPWI), and 0.581‰ to 0.615‰ (early Pleistocene). We show that Mercenaria do not require a species-specific ∆47 calibration. Modern and MPWI ∆47-derived summer/winter temperatures (SST∆47) and seasonal amplitudes are indistinguishable from δ18O-derived temperatures. The early Pleistocene summer SST∆47 is indistinguishable from δ18O-derived temperatures, but the winter SST∆47 is warmer by 5 °C and may reflect within-shell time averaging. The modern summer/winter SST∆47 are indistinguishable from the MPWI, but the MPWI has a lower seasonal amplitude by 5 °C. Compared to our calculated δ18Osw values, modeled values for the MPWI are within error but are much lower, and they are not within error for the early Pleistocene. Full article

This study evaluates the production of base oils for biolubricants using fatty acid methyl esters (FAMEs) derived from sunflower oil as the raw material. The production process involved the synthesis of oleochemical esters through a single-step alkaline transesterification reaction with a high-molecular-weight polyol, such as trimethylolpropane (TMP). To assess the effectiveness of the developed catalytic system in conducting the transesterification reactions and its impact on the properties of the final product, two types of alkaline catalysts were used. Specifically, the reactions were carried out using either Ca/TEA alkoxide or sodium methoxide as catalysts in various configurations and concentrations to determine the optimal catalyst concentration and reaction conditions. Sodium methoxide served as the commercial benchmark catalyst, while the Ca/TEA alkoxide was prepared in the laboratory. The optimal concentration of Ca/TEA was determined to be 3.0% wt. in the presence of iso-octane and 3.5% wt. under vacuum, while the corresponding concentrations of CH3ONa for both cases were determined to be 2.0% wt. The synthesized biolubricant esters exhibit remarkable performance characteristics, such as high kinematic viscosities and low pour points—ranging from 33–48 cSt at 40 °C, 7.68–10.03 cSt at 100 °C, to −14 to −7 °C, respectively—which are comparable to or improved over those of mineral oils such as SN-150 or SN-500, with the Ca/TEA alkoxide-catalyzed systems showing superior oxidation stability and reduced byproduct formation. Effects of Different Phosphorus Addition Levels on Physiological and Growth Traits of Pinus massoniana (Masson Pine) Seedlings

Soil phosphorus (P) availability is an important determinant of productivity in Pinus massoniana (Masson pine) forests. The mechanistic bases governing the physiological and growth responses of Masson pine to varying soil P conditions remain insufficiently characterized. This study aims to decipher the adaptive strategies of Masson pine to different soil P levels, focusing on root morphological–architectural plasticity and the allocation dynamics of nutrient elements and photosynthetic assimilates. One-year-old potted Masson pine seedlings were exposed to four P addition treatments for one year: P0 (0 mg kg−1), P1 (25 mg kg−1), P2 (50 mg·kg−1), and P3 (100 mg kg−1). In July and December, measurements were conducted on seedling organ biomass, root morphological indices [root length (RL), root surface area (RSA), root diameter (RD), specific root length (SRL), and root length ratio (RLR) for each diameter grade], root architectural indices [number of root tips (RTs), fractal dimension (FD), root branching angle (RBA), and root topological index (TI)], as well as the content of nitrogen (N), phosphorus (P), carbon (C), and non-structural carbohydrates (NSCs) in roots, stems, and leaves. Compared with the P0 treatment, P2 and P3 significantly increased root biomass, root–shoot ratio, RL, RSA, RTs, RLR of finer roots (diameter ≤ 0.4 mm), nutrient accumulation ratio in roots, and starch (ST) content in roots, stems and leaves. Meanwhile, they decreased soluble sugar (SS) content, SS/ST ratio, C and N content, and N/P and C/P ratios in stems and leaves, as well as nutrient accumulation ratio in leaves. The P3 treatment significantly reduced RBA and increased FD and SRL. Our results indicated that Masson pine adapts to low P by developing shallower roots with a reduced branching intensity and promoting the conversion of ST to SS. P’s addition effectively alleviates growth limitations imposed by low P, stimulating root growth, branching, and gravitropism. Although a sole P addition promotes short-term growth and P uptake, it triggers a substantial consumption of N, C, and SS, leading to significant decreases in N/P and C/P ratios and exacerbating N’s limitation, which is detrimental to long-term growth. Under high-P conditions, Masson pine strategically prioritizes allocating limited N and SS to roots, facilitating the formation of thinner roots with low C costs. Full article

Interpreters who translate for refugees are regularly confronted with traumatic content. Listening regularly to and translating potentially traumatizing stories make interpreters vulnerable to secondary traumatization. The current study aimed to investigate secondary traumatic stress (STS) in interpreters working with refugees and to identify potential risk and protective factors. In this cross-sectional study, 64 interpreters from Austria, Germany, and Switzerland participated. STS, compassion satisfaction, burnout, and resilience were assessed using the Secondary Traumatic Stress Scale, Professional Quality of Life Scale, and Connor–Davidson Resilience Scale. Sociodemographic data were collected (e.g., experiences with translation in psychotherapy, personal backgrounds of forced displacement, and personal experiences with psychotherapy as a client). Subgroup comparisons were conducted to identify risk factors for STS. A total of 43 participants (67%) showed at least mild STS. STS was significantly associated with burnout. Personal experiences of forced displacement, gender, and working context had no impact on STS. Interpreters with personal experiences of psychotherapy showed a higher level of STS as well as higher resilience than those without personal experiences of psychotherapy. Independent of personal experiences of forced displacement, gender, and working context, interpreters who work with refugees are at high risk of STS. Regular training and supervision for interpreters who work with refugees should thus be offered as standard practice. Full article

Surface Damage Detection in Hydraulic Structures from UAV Images Using Lightweight Neural Networks

Timely and accurate identification of surface damage in hydraulic structures is essential for maintaining structural integrity and ensuring operational safety. Traditional manual inspections are time-consuming, labor-intensive, and prone to subjectivity, especially for large-scale or inaccessible infrastructure. Leveraging advancements in aerial imaging, unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) enable efficient acquisition of high-resolution visual data across expansive hydraulic environments. However, existing deep learning (DL) models often lack architectural adaptations for the visual complexities of UAV imagery, including low-texture contrast, noise interference, and irregular crack patterns. To address these challenges, this study proposes a lightweight, robust, and high-precision segmentation framework, called LFPA-EAM-Fast-SCNN, specifically designed for pixel-level damage detection in UAV-captured images of hydraulic concrete surfaces. The developed DL-based model integrates an enhanced Fast-SCNN backbone for efficient feature extraction, a Lightweight Feature Pyramid Attention (LFPA) module for multi-scale context enhancement, and an Edge Attention Module (EAM) for refined boundary localization. The experimental results on a custom UAV-based dataset show that the proposed damage detection method achieves superior performance, with a precision of 0.949, a recall of 0.892, an F1 score of 0.906, and an IoU of 87.92%, outperforming U-Net, Attention U-Net, SegNet, DeepLab v3+, I-ST-UNet, and SegFormer. Additionally, it reaches a real-time inference speed of 56.31 FPS, significantly surpassing other models. The experimental results demonstrate the proposed framework’s strong generalization capability and robustness under varying noise levels and damage scenarios, underscoring its suitability for scalable, automated surface damage assessment in UAV-based remote sensing of civil infrastructure. Invasive fungal infections (IFIs) represent a growing global health threat, particularly for immunocompromised populations, with mortality exceeding 1.5 million deaths annually. Despite their clinical and economic burden—costing billions in healthcare expenditures—fungal infections remain underprioritized in public health agendas. This review examines the current landscape of antifungal therapy, focusing on advances, challenges, and future directions. Key drug classes (polyenes, azoles, echinocandins, and novel agents) are analyzed for their mechanisms of action, pharmacokinetics, and clinical applications, alongside emerging resistance patterns in pathogens like Candida auris and azole-resistant Aspergillus fumigatus. The rise of resistance, driven by agricultural fungicide use and nosocomial transmission, underscores the need for innovative antifungals, rapid diagnostics, and stewardship programs. Promising developments include next-generation echinocandins (e.g., rezafungin), triterpenoids (ibrexafungerp), and orotomides (olorofim), which target resistant strains and offer improved safety profiles. The review also highlights the critical role of “One Health” strategies to mitigate environmental and clinical resistance. Future success hinges on multidisciplinary collaboration, enhanced surveillance, and accelerated drug development to address unmet needs in antifungal therapy. Full article
