This paper presents an ultra-miniaturized and high-quality factor embedded loaded coaxial substrate integrated waveguide (ELCSIW) filter. Integrating a substrate-integrated coaxial resonator with a capacitively loaded air cavity achieves a 99% reduction in size compared to a conventional SIW cavity. Incorporating an air gap in the capacitive loading structure significantly enhances the resonator’s quality factor. A comprehensive analysis of the miniaturization factor and quality factor in relation to cavity structure dimensions is performed. Guidelines for fabricating the highly loaded cavity are presented. To demonstrate the benefits of this technique, a two-pole band-pass filter with a 6.3% bandwidth at 1.1 GHz is designed, fabricated, and measured. The overall footprint of the filter is 10.5 mm × 20.5 mm, which is comparable to 0.07 λg× 0.14 λg. The measured insertion loss is 0.54 dB, and the upper band is spurious-free up to 7 times the resonant frequency. The exceptional performance and compactness of the loaded coaxial substrate integrated waveguide cavities highlight their immense potential for compact advanced wireless systems. Full article

This work presents a compact microwave sensor for noninvasive blood glucose monitoring based on a substrate-integrated waveguide loaded with a complementary split-ring resonator on RO4350. The sensing principle uses shifts in resonance frequency and changes in S-parameters to track the dielectric dispersion of glucose-containing tissue. The resonator is constructed using Substrate-Integrated Waveguide (SIW) technology, which mimics the propagation characteristics of a conventional rectangular waveguide. To validate its versatility, the sensor implements three practical sample delivery modes: direct liquid contact with the sensing surface, a glass tube holder mounted over the active region, and a non-invasive fingertip interface. Electromagnetic simulations and benchtop measurements confirm clear glucose-dependent frequency shifts with stable matching and insertion levels. Across the physiological range of 20 to 200 mg·dL−1, the sensor exhibits clear glucose-dependent resonance shifts in all configurations. In direct contact mode, the resonance frequency shifts from 10.83 GHz to 10.45 GHz with sensitivities up to 2.47 MHz per mg·dL−1. The tube configuration shows a shift from 10.49 GHz to 10.38 GHz with sensitivity up to 0.80 MHz per mg·dL−1, while reducing contamination. In the non-invasive fingertip mode, the resonance shifts from 2.56 GHz to 2.52 GHz with sensitivities up to 0.25 MHz per mg·dL−1. These results confirm the sensor’s compactness, reliability, and suitability for portable, low-cost glucose monitoring. The results indicate that the proposed sensor can support practical continuous or spot monitoring and offers a clear path toward portable and low-cost glucose assessment. Full article

This work presents a millimeter-wave half-mode substrate integrated waveguide filter with high selectivity, using through glass via technology. Compared to a traditional printed circuit board, the benefits of high precision and integration afforded by the glass-based process enable the substrate-integrated waveguide to be employed at a higher operating frequency. A novel negative coupling structure is proposed for achieving a quasi-elliptic function response, and its coupling mechanism is investigated to explore the properties of the finite transmission zeros. The proposed coupling slots allow for flexible adjustment of the coupling between the half-mode substrate integrated waveguide cavities from positive to negative by modulating the corresponding geometrical parameters. As a prototype, a glass-based fourth-order bandpass filter is synthesized, simulated, fabricated and measured. Subsequently, good matching is captured, confirming the validity of the topology. The proposed glass-based negative coupling structure is promising for realizing substrate integrated waveguide filters with a quasi-elliptic function response, especially operating at millimeter-wave band. The efficient oxidation of glucose to formic acid (FA) has emerged as a sustainable method for biomass utilization. Herein, we developed a new approach to fulfill oxidation of glucose to formic acid using a polyoxometalate (POM) K10SiW9Mn3IIO37/O3 system, and its high efficiency was presented with 79.3% yield of FA at 82.1% conversion at room temperature for 3 h. As evidenced by experiments, the components in Mn-POMs significantly influenced glucose conversion due to their effect on generating reactive oxygen species (ROSs) from O3, which was essential for FA production. This paper presents a dual four-port circularly polarized (CP) MIMO antenna based on substrate integrated waveguide (SIW) technology for sub-6 GHz applications. The design consists of two identical four-port SIW-based CP-MIMO antennas arranged in a mirror-symmetric configuration with an air gap of 15 mm. Each antenna employs four symmetrically arranged cross-shaped SIW patches excited by coaxial probes. Bidirectional radiation is achieved by applying a 180° phase difference between corresponding ports of the mirror symmetric configuration, referred to as the Backward-Radiating Unit (BRU) and the Forward-Radiating Unit (FRU). The bidirectional radiation mechanism is supported by array-factor-based theoretical modelling, which explains the constructive and destructive interference under phase-controlled excitation. To ensure high isolation and stable polarization performance, the antenna design incorporates defected ground structures, inter-element decoupling strips, and vertical metallic vias. Simulations indicate an operating band from 5.1 to 5.4 GHz. Measurements show a −10 dB bandwidth from 5.25 to 5.55 GHz, with the frequency shift attributed to fabrication tolerances and measurement uncertainties. The antenna achieves inter-port isolation better than −15 dB. A 3 dB axial-ratio bandwidth is maintained across the operating band. Measured axial-ratio values remain below 3 dB from 5.25 to 5.55 GHz, while simulations predict a corresponding range from 5.1 to 5.4 GHz. The proposed configuration achieves a peak gain exceeding 4 dBi and maintains an envelope correlation coefficient below 0.05. These results confirm its suitability for CP-MIMO systems with controlled spatial coverage. With a physical size of 0.733λ0 × 0.733λ0 per array, the proposed antenna is well-suited for vehicular and space-constrained wireless systems requiring bidirectional CP-MIMO coverage. Full article

With the advancement of wireless communication technologies into high-frequency millimeter wave and sub-THz bands, conventional transmission lines such as microstrip and stripline face significant limitations. Under the circumstances, along with the increased application of new transmission lines such as substrate-integrated waveguides (SIWs), the design of transition structures between different transmission lines has become a practical requirement in modern signal transmission systems. This paper presents a novel stripline to SIW transition structure. Drawing inspiration from the classical microstrip probe techniques in metal waveguides, the proposed design employs Low-Temperature Co-fired Ceramic (LTCC) technology for both device fabrication and SIW implementation. The developed structure demonstrates a stable performance, structural simplicity, and manufacturing feasibility. Through fabrication and testing, the transition structure can achieve a return loss below −10 dB across the 89–100 GHz frequency range, with an insertion loss of approximately 0.75 dB. Full article

To measure temperature and pressure parameters in harsh environments such as those with high temperature and high pressure, a wireless and passive multi-grid Complementary Split-Ring Resonator and substrate integrated waveguide (MG-CSRR-SIW) structure for a temperature and pressure sensor based on microwave scattering principles and high-temperature co-fired ceramic (HTCC) technology is proposed. It can measure temperature within 25–1200 °C and pressure within 0–300 kPa. The structural design of the sensor by using high-frequency electromagnetic simulation software contributes to a linear relationship between the measured parameters and the sensor’s return loss (S11). Furthermore, the performance validation of the proposed sensor is implemented by sensor fabrication and experimentation. The test results show that the proposed sensor exhibits good performance of reliability and linearity. The temperature sensitivity is 199.33 kHz/°C and 379.75 kHz/°C in the temperature ranges of 25–475 °C and 475–1200 °C, respectively. In addition, the pressure sensitivity reaches 235.5 kHz/kPa at 800 °C. The maximum relative measurement error is 2.2% and 1.45% in regard to temperature and pressure, respectively. Full article

In this work, a substrate-integrated waveguide (SIW) filtering power divider with a modified complementary split-ring resonator (CSRR) is reported. Firstly, by integrating the meander-shaped slots with the conventional CSRR, the proposed inner-meander-slot CSRR (IMSCSRR) can enlarge the total length of the defected slot and increase the width of the split, thus enhancing the equivalent capacitance and inductance. In this way, the fundamental resonant frequency of the IMSCSRR can be effectively decreased without enlarging the circuit size, which can generally help to reduce the physical size by over 35%. Subsequently, to further reduce the circuit size, two IMSCSRRs are separately loaded on the top and bottom metal covers to constitute a broadside-coupled IMSCSRR, which is combined with the SIW. To verify the efficacy of the proposed SIW-IMSCSRR unit cell, a two-way filtering power divider is implemented. It combines the band-selection function of a filter and the power-distribution property of a power divider, thereby enhancing system integration and realizing size compactness. Experimental results show that the proposed filtering power divider achieves a center frequency of 3.53 GHz, a bandwidth of about 320 MHz, an in-band insertion loss of (3 + 1.3) dB, an in-band isolation of over 21 dB, and a size reduction of about 30% compared with the design without broadside-coupling, as well as good magnitude and phase variations. All the results indicate that the proposed filtering power divider achieves a good balance between low loss, high isolation, and compact size, which is suitable for system integration applications in microwave scenarios. This paper considers the two parallel-machine scheduling problem with intree-precedence constraints where machines are subject to non-availability constraints. In the literature, this problem is considered to be an open problem of unknown complexity. The proposed solution proves that the problem under consideration has polynomial complexity. Periods of machine unavailability are predetermined, and both task execution and inter-task communication are modeled as requiring one unit of time. The optimization criterion central to this study is the minimization of the makespan. Such a scheduling challenge is directly applicable to manufacturing environments, where production equipment can be intermittently offline for reasons such as unscheduled repairs or planned preventative maintenance. Adopting a unit-time task model offers a valuable framework for subsequently scheduling larger, preemptable jobs. This work presents a new method, called Scheduling Intrees with Unavailability Constraints (SIwUC), which operates by aggregating tasks into distinct groups. The analysis establishes that the SIwUC algorithm produces optimal schedules and reveals how the underlying problem architecture and its solutions demonstrate a symmetrical property in the distribution of tasks across the two parallel machines. This paper demonstrates that the proposed SIwUC algorithm builds optimal schedules and highlight how the problem structure and its solutions exhibit a form of symmetry in balancing task allocation between the two parallel machines. To address the pressing need for compact and highly reliable perception systems in autonomous mobile robots, a compact bandpass filter (BPF) integrating slot-line resonator with substrate-integrated waveguide (SIW) technology for robotic millimeter-wave radar front ends was proposed. By integrating slot-line resonators between adjacent SIW cavities, the proposed design effectively increases the filtering order without increasing the layout area. This approach not only generates extra transmission poles but also creates a sharp transmission zero at the upper stopband, thereby significantly enhancing out-of-band rejection. This characteristic is crucial for robotic radar operating in complex and dynamic environments, as it effectively suppresses out-of-band interference and improves the system signal-to-noise ratio and detection reliability. To validate the performance, a prototype filter operating in the 24.25–27.5 GHz passband was fabricated. The measured results show good agreement with simulations, demonstrating low insertion loss, compact size, and wide stopband. Finally, to validate its compatibility with robotic radar modules, the chip was assembled onto a PCB using surface-mount technology. The responses of the bare die and the packaged module were then compared to evaluate the impact of integration on the overall RF performance. The proposed design offers a key filtering solution for next-generation high-performance, miniaturized robotic perception platforms. Full article

A novel wideband 1-bit reconfigurable transmitarray (RTA) is proposed, which is based on a substrate-integrated cavity-backed patch (SCIBP) element. The RTA element consists of a pair of SCIBP antennas, achieving wideband operational capability through the optimization of dielectric substrate thickness. To suppress surface-wave propagation between adjacent RTA elements, a substrate-integrated waveguide (SIW) is designed to function as a metallic isolation wall. A 180° phase shift is realized by dynamically manipulating p-i-n diodes embedded within the SCIBP antenna structure. When the dielectric substrate thickness is increased from 6 mm to 10 mm, the 3 dB transmission bandwidth is expanded from 10% to 33.6%. The simulation results confirm that the proposed element realizes a 3 dB transmission bandwidth of 33.6%. A prototype RTA with 100 elements is designed, fabricated, and measured. The prototype achieves a peak gain of 16.6 dBi at 4.6 GHz, accompanied by an aperture efficiency of 17.2% and a 3 dB gain bandwidth of 18.9%. Furthermore, measured scanned beams illustrate that the proposed RTA possesses good beamscanning performance. Owing to its many advantages, such as wideband operation, lightweight design, low cost, simple structure, and easy fabrication, it is particularly suitable for application in intelligent communication systems and radar systems. The terahertz (THz) band offers ultra-wide bandwidth for next-generation high-speed wireless communication systems. However, achieving compact, high-gain, and beam-symmetric THz antennas remains challenging due to fabrication and propagation constraints. This paper presents a simulation-based design and optimization of a stacked substrate-integrated waveguide (SIW) pyramidal horn antenna achieving equal half-power beamwidths (HPBWs) in both E- and H-planes. The design employs vertically stacked SIW layers coupled through optimized slot apertures to ensure dominant TE10 mode propagation with minimal reflection. Using full-wave electromagnetic simulations, the effects of layer number, dielectric loading, amplitude tapering, and phase distribution are systematically analyzed. The optimized five-layer configuration exhibits 10 dBi gain, 41° HPBW, and sidelobe levels around −3.2 dB at 210 GHz. This framework aims to develop high-performance, beam-symmetric THz SIW antennas compatible with standard LTCC/PCB technologies. Full article

Alzheimer’s disease (AD) signifies a devastating impact on the quality of life of patients and their families. At a biomolecular level, AD is characterized by the deposition of extracellular plaques of β-amyloid (Aβ), affecting language, spatial navigation, recognition abilities and memory. Among the selected 30 articles about polyoxometalates (POMs) and AD published from 2011 to 2025, pure POMs, hybrid POMs and POM nanoparticles can be found. The majority of POMs are polyoxotungstates (62%), the Keggin-type SiW11O39 being the most studied in AD. The main effect described is the inhibition of Aβ aggregates. Other effects include reversing the neurotoxicity induced by Aβ aggregates, decreasing ROS production and neuroinflammation, restoring memory and sequestering Zn2+ and Cu2+, among others, features that are well known to be associated with the pathology of AD. POMs have also shown the ability to induce the disaggregation of Aβ fibrils, particularly after irradiation, and to inhibit acetylcholinesterase activity at an nM range. Putting it all together, this review highlights a predominant trend in the exploration of POMs to act directly at the level of the formation and/or disaggregation of Aβ aggregates in the treatment of AD. This paper presents a design approach for a dual-band substrate-integrated waveguide (SIW) bandpass filter (BPF) featuring passband tunability and wide-stopband characteristics. The proposed circuit is realized using half-mode (HM) SIW cavities loaded with tunable stopband resonators (TSRs). The TSRs are realized using transmission lines and varactor diodes. Passband tunability can be achieved by adjusting the supply voltage on the varactor diode. Wide-stopband characteristics can be achieved by integrating the defected microstrip structure into the proposed circuit. To validate the proposed concept, dual-band HM SIW BPFs with fixed and tunable passbands has been designed and fabricated. Based on the measurement results, the proposed circuits demonstrate high-frequency selectivity, with an attenuation level better than 20 dB and measured up to more than 40 GHz at the highest stopband. Moreover, the proposed tunable dual-band HM SIW BPF provides a passband tuning range of 240 MHz, measured from 4.88 GHz to 5.12 GHz for the first passband, and 310 MHz, measured from 6.19 GHz to 6.5 GHz for the second passband. This paper presents the design and implementation of a wideband diode-based down-converter operating from 60 to 90 GHz with a variable flat conversion gain. The proposed down-converter is implemented utilizing the Miniature Hybrid-Microwave Integrated Circuit (MHMIC) technology. It is composed of a wideband double-balanced mixer, a Local Oscillator (LO) chain, and a differential TransImpedance Amplifier (TIA) with a variable gain. The designed mixer uses a novel topology exhibiting minimum reflection and high isolation between the RF and LO ports across a wide operating frequency of 30 GHz. In this topology, two balanced detectors generate the differential IF signal with minimum reflection. The characteristic impedance (Z0) of the mixer is set to be 70.7Ω, to minimize trace widths to reduce the mutual coupling and increasing the bandwidth. The OPA 657 is the core of the designed differential TIA with a variable gain. In addition, the LO chain of the down-converter utilized a combination of an active (×2) and a passive (×3) multiplier to generate enough RF power in the desired frequency range. Also, a WR-12 waveguide to Substrate Integrated Waveguide (SIW) transition is designed for the RF and LO ports that operates through the E-band. The proposed down-converter demonstrates excellent performance, with a high isolation between RF and LO ports exceeding 22 dB and a maximum conversion gain of 5 dB, and a response with a variation of ±5 dB across the band. The proposed mixer exhibits a return loss of better than 10 dB at both RF and LO ports, and it consumes a power of 560 mW. Full article
