Xinjiang is the major cotton-producing region in China, and identifying core germplasm with disease resistance, high yield, and high seed index is of great significance for guiding local cotton production and breeding practices. Using 182 upland cotton germplasm accessions, we systematically investigated Verticillium wilt (caused by Verticillium dahliae) disease index, yield, and seed index in Kuitun, Xinjiang, during 2018–2019. Comparative analysis revealed that the germplasm from the Yellow River Ecological Region (YER) exhibited the strongest disease resistance but ranked second in yield, while the germplasm from the Northwest Inland Ecological Region (NWC) was susceptible to disease, yet had the highest yield, indicating great potential for further improving cotton yield in Kuitun. The Verticillium wilt index decreased, and yield increased with breeding periods. PCA and K-Means clustering divided germplasm into three clusters, with Cluster 0 being disease-resistant, high-yielding, and having a high seed index. Using the 20th percentile method, 20 core germplasm (11.0% of total) were selected, including disease-resistant and high-yield accessions, 3 disease-susceptible and high-yield accessions, and 6 disease-resistant and high seed index accessions. The results of this study provide important material support and a theoretical basis for the synergistic breeding of cotton with disease resistance, high yield, and high seed index in Xinjiang. Water scarcity has become a significant constraint to agricultural development in China. In this study, we employed bibliometric methods to systematically review the current research on crop water use efficiency (WUE) and the development trends in the North China Plain (NCP) and Northwest China (NWC). We analyzed 1569 articles (NCP = 788; NWC = 781) from the Web of Science Core Collection (1995–2025) using visualization tools such as CiteSpace and VOSviewer to investigate annual numbers of publications, leading scholars and research institutions, and then to map keyword co-occurrence and co-citation structures. Our results showed that keyword clustering exhibited high structural quality (NCP: Q = 0.7345, S = 0.8634; NWC: Q = 0.758, S = 0.8912), supporting reliable thematic interpretation. The bibliometric analysis indicates a steady growth in annual publications since 1995, with the Chinese Academy of Sciences and China Agricultural University as leading contributors. From 1995 to 2005, studies centered on irrigation, yield and field-scale WUE, emphasizing the optimization of irrigation strategies and crop productivity. During 2006–2015, the thematic focus has broadened to encompass nitrogen use efficiency, crop quality and eco-environmental performance, thereby moving toward integrated evaluation frameworks that capture ecological synergies. Since 2016, the literature now emphasizes system integration, regional adaptability, climate-response mechanisms and the ecological co-benefits of agricultural practices. Future studies are expected to incorporate indicators such as crop quality, water footprint and carbon isotope indicators to support the sustainable development of agricultural water use. This study offers insights and recommendations for developing a comprehensive crop WUE evaluation framework in China, which will support sustainable agricultural water management and the realization of national “dual carbon” targets. Quantifying and removing urbanization-induced biases in existing precipitation datasets is critical for climate change detection, model assessment, and attribution studies in Northwest China (NWC). The precipitation observational stations of NWC were divided into rural (reference) stations and urban stations using the percentage of urban areas calculated from the land use/land cover (LULC) satellite data of the European Space Agency (ESA) Climate Change Initiative (CCI) Land Cover project. The annual extreme precipitation index series for urban stations (all stations) and rural stations from 1961 to 2022 were calculated based on the categorization of meteorological stations, and the urbanization effects and their contributions to precipitation index series were quantitatively evaluated through estimating trends in the difference series between all stations and the rural stations. The results showed that the urbanization effect varies among different regions and indices. The R10mm, R95pTOT, R99pTOT, and PRCPTOT indices in the sampled urban areas of NWC exhibited statistically significant negative urbanization effects, reaching −0.075 days decade−1, −0.038 % decade−1, −0.024 % decade−1, and −0.035 % decade−1, respectively. However, the R95pTOT, SDII, CDD, and CWD indices at the urban station of the largest city, Urumqi, have been significantly positively affected by urbanization, which is inconsistent with the sampled urban areas of NWC, where the urbanization effect reached 0.069 % decade−1, 0.054 mm·d−1 decade−1, 2.319 days decade−1, and 0.112 days decade−1, respectively. Our analysis shows that the previously reported regional increase in total precipitation and extremes has been underestimated due to the negative urbanization effects in the precipitation data series of urban stations. The Tarim Basin in the western part of Northwest China (NWC) is the largest inland basin in the world and one of the most arid regions in the middle latitudes. In recent years, heavy precipitation events have occurred frequently in this region, especially in the western Tarim Basin (WTB), due to the climate change. Based on the hourly precipitation data from 2010 to 2022, the diurnal variation in summer precipitation and the characteristics of precipitation events with different durations in WTB have been analyzed. The results mainly show that (1) the diurnal variations in the precipitation amount (PA), precipitation frequency (PF) and precipitation intensity (PI) mainly present a unimodal pattern, but the times of maximum value do not coincide. The peak value of PA and PF appears between 01:00 and 03:00 BJT (Beijing Time), while the valley value appears around 18:00 BJT, yet the peak value of PI appears between 20:00 and 23:00 BJT with no obvious valley value. (2) There are some differences in the diurnal variation characteristics of precipitation among different summer months and different regions. (3) During the past decade, the precipitation structure in WTB has been continuously adjusted, and short-duration- and long-duration-precipitation-dominant periods appear alternately. On the whole, short-duration precipitation has been more frequent in summer, accounting for 70% of the total precipitation events and 40% of the total accumulated precipitation amount. These results can help us to better understand the refined physical characteristics of precipitation events and enhance our understanding of the local climate in the WTB under the background of climate change. In the context of global warming, the acceleration of the water cycle increases the risk of meteorological drought (MD) and hydrological drought (HD) in the arid region of Northwest China. The Manas River Basin is a typical agricultural oasis and the largest oasis farming area in Xinjiang, Northwest China. Droughts in this basin have significant implications for both agricultural production and the livelihoods of inhabitants. To evaluate the MD and HD and provide information for drought relief in the MRB, the standardized precipitation evapotranspiration index (SPEI) and standardized runoff index (SRI) were calculated using long-term rainfall and runoff data. Subsequently, combined with ArcGIS 10.3 software and the trend analysis method, the SPEI and SRI characteristics were evaluated at different time scales (1-, 3-, 6-, and 12-month). There were three main findings. First, both MD and HD were alleviated, with significantly more HD alleviation. MDs in spring and autumn exhibited a trend of aggravation. The SRIs in summer, autumn, and winter increased significantly at a confidence level of p < 0.01, with an insignificant decline in spring. In the 2010s, the frequency of light drought of MD was stable at 10% to 20%, while severe and extreme droughts increased. The frequency of HDs has decreased since the 1990s. Second, on annual and seasonal scales, MDs occurred mainly as light and moderate droughts. The highest frequency of MD was 24% of moderate droughts in winter. Spatially, the northern region of the MRB was characterized by more frequent light and extreme droughts. Third, runoff in the Manas River Basin increased significantly during the 1990s, which may have been related to the acceleration of glacial retreat in the Tianshan Mountains. This study can effectively reveal the changes in meteorological and hydrological drought in NWC and provide the basis for risk decision-making and management for watershed managers. Full article

Precipitation water vapor (PWV) is an important parameter in numerical weather forecasting and climate research. However, existing PWV adjustment models lack comprehensive consideration of seasonal and geographic factors. This study utilized the General Regression Neural Network (GRNN) algorithm and Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS) PWV in China to construct and evaluate European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts (ECMWF) Atmospheric Reanalysis (ERA5) PWV adjustment models for various seasons and subregions based on meteorological parameters (GMPW model) and non-meteorological parameters (GFPW model). A linear model (GLPW model) was established for model accuracy comparison. The results show that: (1) taking GNSS PWV as a reference, the Bias and root mean square error (RMSE) of the GLPW, GFPW, and GMPW models are about 0/1 mm, which better weakens the systematic error of ERA5 PWV. The overall Bias of the GLPW, GFPW, and GMPW models in the Northwest (NWC), North China (NC), Tibetan Plateau (TP), and South China (SC) subregions is approximately 0 mm after adjustment. The adjusted overall RMSE of the GLPW, GFPW, and GMPW models of the four subregions are 0.81/0.71/0.62 mm, 1.15/0.95/0.77 mm, 1.66/1.26/1.05 mm, and 2.11/1.35/0.96 mm, respectively. (2) The accuracy of the three models is tested using GNSS PWV, which is not involved in the modeling. The adjusted overall RMSE of the GLPW, GFPW, and GMPW models in the four subregions are 0.89/0.85/0.83 mm, 1.61/1.58/1.27 mm, 2.11/1.75/1.68 mm and 3.65/2.48/1.79 mm, respectively. As a result, the GFPW and GMPW models have better accuracy in adjusting ERA5 PWV than the linear model GLPW. Therefore, the GFPW and GMPW models can effectively contribute to water vapor monitoring and the integration of multiple PWV datasets. Full article

Understanding the impact of irrigation on the spatiotemporal characteristics of precipitation is important for the ecological stability of the arid region of Northwest China (NWC). In this study, the global climate model MPI-ESM-MR is utilized to provide the initial and lateral boundary conditions for the regional climate model RegCM4, enabling the simulation of the long-term climate of the arid NWC region under two Representative Concentration Pathways (RCPs). The study focuses on analyzing the differences in the spatiotemporal distribution, intensity, and frequency of precipitation before and after irrigation. Furthermore, the study explores the primary factors influencing changes in the spatiotemporal distribution characteristics of precipitation in the irrigation district and its downwind region. The results indicate that RegCM4 performs well in simulating the climatology and diurnal cycle of precipitation in the NWC, particularly excelling during the summer. Large-scale irrigation significantly impacts the structure of summer precipitation, leading to a notable increase in convective precipitation near the irrigation district and surrounding mountain ranges. Anomalous cyclonic circulation and enhanced vertical velocity enhancement provide dynamic conditions for increased precipitation in the irrigation district and surrounding mountainous regions. Furthermore, the evaporation of water vapor resulting from large-scale irrigation serves as an additional source of moisture, contributing to increased precipitation in the irrigation district and its downwind region. Due to the difference in climatic conditions between the western and eastern regions around the irrigated areas, the summer extreme precipitation in the west predominantly increases. At the same time, in the east, it predominantly decreases due to irrigation. The findings of this study contribute to a deeper understanding of the physical mechanisms through which agricultural irrigation influences precipitation in the arid region of the NWC, thereby providing scientific evidence for the sustainable utilization of water resources in the region. Very Low Frequency (VLF) waves radiated from ground-based transmitters are crucial for long-distance communication and underwater navigation. These waves can reflect between the Earth’s surface and the ionosphere for Earth–ionosphere waveguide propagation. Additionally, they can penetrate not only the ionosphere but also the magnetosphere, where they interact with high-energy particles in the radiation belt. Therefore, studying the spatial and temporal distribution of VLF radio signals holds significant importance. Such research enables us to understand the propagation characteristics of VLF signals, their interaction with radiation belt particles, and their response to space weather and lithospheric activity events. In this paper, we investigate the seasonal variations in the intensity of the Northwest Cape (NWC) transmitter (19.8 kHz) radio signals at satellite altitude and the displacement of the electric field’s peak center. Our analysis is based on the nightly China Seismo-Electromagnetic Satellite (CSES) data from 2019 to 2021. The results reveal the following: (1) There is no significant seasonal variation in the electric field strength within a small area (2.5° radius) around the NWC transmitter. However, a clear seasonal variation in the electric field strength is observed within a larger area (15° radius), with higher strength during winter compared with summer. (2) The power spectral density of the electric field remains constant within the peak central area (approximately 1~2° radius), but it decays with distance outside this region, showing a north–south asymmetry. Moreover, the decay rate of the radiation electric field is slower in the northern direction than in the southern direction. (3) The center of the electric field moves northward from summer to winter and southward from winter to summer. (4) In winter, VLF waves radiated by the NWC transmitter may predominantly propagate by being ducted toward the conjugate hemisphere. Full article

Northwest China (NWC) is one of the driest areas of the world. Over the past decades, NWC has experienced rapid socio-economic development, further stressing its freshwater quantity and quality. However, there is little knowledge on the long-term status of NWC’s water resources and the anthropogenic impacts—positive (environmental policies) or negative (uncontrolled development). We present a holistic spatiotemporal assessment of NWC’s water quantity, water scarcity, and water quality based on water use intensity (WUI), water scarcity index (WSI), and statistical analyses and tests, combining multiple datasets spanning the past two decades. Moreover, we analyze the impacts of socio-economic development on water resources and mention the relevant governmental efforts and policies to preserve NWC’s water resources. NWC’s water use was found to be unsustainable, having significantly increased by 10% over the past two decades, but without being able to adequately cover the needs of most sectors. Our results also reveal water scarcity inequalities among NWC’s provinces; perennial water scarcity exists in Xinjiang and Ningxia Provinces, and there is no water stress in Qinghai. A remarkable wastewater treatment rate (from 27.3% in 2003 to 97.1% in 2020) and river water quality improvement have been achieved under continuous efforts, huge restoration and water pollution control investments. However, water shortages are a persistent issue. Balancing the water availability and demand will be crucial to achieve a truly sustainable development. Full article

Understanding the impact of drought on fire dynamics is crucial for assessing the potential effects of climate change on wildfire activity in China. In this study, we present a series of multiple linear regression (MLR) models linking burned area (BA) during mainland China’s fire season from 2001 to 2019, across seven regions, to concurrent drought, antecedent drought, and time trend. We estimated burned area using Collection 6 Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectradiometer (MODIS) and drought indicators using either the Standardized Precipitation Evapotranspiration Index (SPEI) or the self-calibrated Palmer Drought Severity Index (sc-PDSI). Our findings indicate that the wildfire season displays a spatial variation pattern that increases with latitude, with the Northeast China (NEC), North China (NC), and Central China (CC) regions identified as the primary areas of wildfire occurrence. Concurrent and antecedent drought conditions were found to have varying effects across regions, with concurrent drought as the dominant predictor for NEC and Southeast China (SEC) regions and antecedent drought as the key predictor for most regions. We also found that the Northwest China (NWC) and CC regions exhibit a gradual decrease in burned area over time, while the NEC region showed a slight increase. Our multiple linear regression models exhibited a notable level of predictive power, as evidenced by the average correlation coefficient of 0.63 between the leave-one-out cross-validation predictions and observed values. In particular, the NEC, NWC, and CC regions demonstrated strong correlations of 0.88, 0.80, and 0.76, respectively. This indicates the potential of our models to contribute to the prediction of future wildfire occurrences and the development of effective wildfire management and prevention strategies. Nevertheless, the intricate relationship among fire, climate change, human activities, and vegetation distribution may limit the generalizability of these findings to other conditions. Consequently, future research should consider a broad range of factors to develop more comprehensive models. Full article

Drought is one of the most destructive natural disasters in China and can cause serious environmental and socio-economic impacts. Based on monthly precipitation and temperature data from 571 meteorological stations, the Standardized Precipitation Evapotranspiration Index (SPEI) was calculated on a 12-month scale (SPEI-12) from 1985 to 2018 in mainland China, and it was compared with the records of the Bulletin of Flood and Drought Disasters in China to verify its drought monitoring accuracy. Then, run theory was used to explore in depth the spatiotemporal distribution of drought characteristics and trends in various climatic sub-regions. The results showed that: (1) the comparison with the Bulletin of Flood and Drought Disasters in China indicated that the results of SPEI-12 monitoring drought had high accuracy and could identify drought events in mainland China. (2) About 70% of the regions in mainland China experienced droughts more than 50 times, and about 43% of the regions had drought durations of between 100 and 110 months. Nearly 11% of the regions had drought severities of more than 130, which were mainly located in the Northwest Desert (NWC), the southern part of Northeast China (NEC), and the western part of North China (NC). (3) In the past 34 years, the droughts in the Northwest Desert (NWC), the western part of Inner Mongolia (IM), and the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau (TP) showed an aridity trend, while the droughts in South China (SC) and eastern Central and South China (CSC) presented a mitigation tendency. (4) Specifically, the droughts in South China (SC) were more influenced by precipitation, while those in the Northwest Desert (NWC) and Northeast China (NEC) were influenced by temperature and potential evapotranspiration, and the evolution of drought in North China (NC) and the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau (TP) was mainly influenced by soil moisture. The study could provide scientific guidance and a reference for drought response and sustainable development in China. Full article

Snow on the Tibetan Plateau (TP) is an important signal for the prediction of East Asian climate. In this study, the relationship between the TP spring snowmelt and spring and summer precipitation in Northwest China (NWC) was investigated, along with the possible mechanisms linked to the impacts of snowmelt on precipitation. The results showed that the TP spring snowmelt had significant impacts on spring and summer precipitation in NWC. For example, when there was a large spring snowmelt in the central- eastern TP, the spring and summer precipitation in the Hexi Corridor and southeast NWC was excessive, especially in summer; when there was a large spring snowmelt in the northern TP, the spring and summer precipitation was deficient across the whole of NWC, while a large spring snowmelt in the western TP led to deficient spring and summer precipitation in eastern NWC but excessive precipitation in western NWC. The possible mechanisms for this included the fact that more spring snowmelt over the TP led to higher soil moisture contents, which further resulted in weakened subtropical westerly and enhanced ridge over Xinjiang. By changing the TP thermal forcing, these anomalous atmospheric circulation conditions transported water vapor into NWC, thus creating excessive summer precipitation in that region. Full article

Drylands, which account for 41% of Earth’s land surface and are home to more than two billion people, play an important role in the global carbon balance. This study analyzes the spatio-temporal patterns of vegetation carbon sinks and sources in the arid region of northwest China (NWC), using the net ecosystem production (NEP) through the Carnegie–Ames–Stanford approach (CASA). It quantitatively evaluates regional ecological security over a 20-year period (2000–2020) via a remote sensing ecological index (RSEI) and other ecological indexes, such as the Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI), fraction of vegetation cover (FVC), net primary productivity (NPP), and land use. The results show that the annual average carbon capacity of vegetation in NWC changed from carbon sources to carbon sinks, and the vegetation NEP increased at a rate of 1.98 gC m−2 yr−1 from 2000 to 2020. Spatially, the annual NEP in northern Xinjiang (NXJ), southern Xinjiang (SXJ) and Hexi Corridor (HX) increased at even faster rates of 2.11, 2.22, and 1.98 gC m−2 yr−1, respectively. Obvious geographically heterogeneous distributions and changes occurred in vegetation carbon sinks and carbon sources. Some 65.78% of the vegetation areas in NWC were carbon sources during 2000–2020, which were concentrated in the plains, and SXJ, the majority carbon sink areas are located in the mountains. The vegetation NEP in the plains exhibited a positive trend (1.21 gC m−2 yr−1) during 2000–2020, but this speed has slowed since 2010. The vegetation NEP in the mountain exhibited only intermittent changes (2.55 gC m−2 yr−1) during 2000–2020; it exhibited a negative trend during 2000–2010, but this trend has reversed strongly since 2010. The entire ecological security of NWC was enhanced during the study period. Specifically, the RSEI increased from 0.34 to 0.49, the NDVI increased by 0.03 (17.65%), the FVC expanded by 19.56%, and the NPP increased by 27.44%. Recent positive trends in NDVI, FVC and NPP have enhanced the capacity of vegetation carbon sinks, and improved the eco-environment of NWC. The scientific outcomes of this study are of great importance for maintaining ecological stability and sustainable economic development along China’s Silk Road Economic Belt. Full article

Herein, we investigated the characteristics and mechanisms of interannual variability of extreme summer precipitation in northwest China (NWC). The four high-resolution precipitation predicting products under assessment indicated that both the accumulation of summer daily precipitation ≥95th percentile, and the summer maxima of daily precipitation generally decreased in a southeast—northwest direction, while relatively high values were observed in the Tienshan and Qilian Mountain areas. In turn, the Tropical Rainfall Measuring Mission (TRMM) satellite dataset underestimated extreme precipitation in mountainous areas, while Asian precipitation highly—resolved observational data integration towards evaluation (APHRODITE) and Climate Prediction Center (CPC) captured the characteristics of extreme precipitation in NWC. AMIP-type simulations of the interannual variability of extreme summer precipitation in NWC were quite unsuccessful. However, all of them can capture the increasing trends. Therefore, we further found that the interannual increase in extreme precipitation in NWC is strongly correlated with the weakened South Asian high, strengthened Western Pacific Subtropical high, the enhanced westerly jet, and the mid- to high-latitude Rossby wave trains, whose formation and sustenance can be traced back to sea surface temperature-anomalies in the western Pacific in May, June, and July. An increased sea surface temperature promotes convection and induces diabatic heating, which stimulates anticyclonic anomalies that disturb the enhanced westerly jet, resulting in a barotropic Rossby wave train via the Gill-type response. Additionally, it guides more water vapor convergence to NWC and enhances upward motion via anticyclonic anomalies over western Europe and Eastern Asia, and cyclonic anomalies over Central Asia. Although ground-based precipitable water vapor (PWV) can be obtained with a high temporal resolution and spatial resolution of tens of kilometers in an urban area using Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS) observation, it remains fairly sparse in the vast regions over Mainland China. Satellite-derived PWV has a high spatial resolution, thereby enabling the accurate investigation of regional climate change. However, understanding the quality of satellite-derived PWV products is a prerequisite before use, which has become the focus of this study. PWV products, namely, MOD05_L2 and MYD05_L2, over the entirety of Mainland China derived from MODerate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) onboard Terra and Aqua satellites are validated over the period 2000–2017 using multiple sources, including GNSS, radiosonde, AErosol RObotic NETwork (AERONET), and European Center for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts ERA-Interim (ECMWF). The accuracy of MODIS PWV products is less than 4.3 mm over the entirety of Mainland China; however, it varies in four areas of South China (SC), North China (NC), Northwest China (NWC), and Tibetan Plateau (TP), separately with values ranging from 3 mm to 6 mm. A linear fit model is applied to calibrate the MODIS PWV products, and the accuracies of the corrected PWV from MODIS infrared (IR) and near-infrared (NIR) products have been improved by approximately 7.5% and 50.6%, respectively. The MODIS PWV is compared and calibrated in the four areas, and the improved accuracies vary widely. The root mean square error (RMSE) of IR PWV is approximately less than 4 mm over China except for the SC area with a value of approximately 5.3 mm after calibration, whereas the values of NIR PWV are approximately 2 mm over the entirety of Mainland China, except for the TP area, with a value of approximately 2.6 mm. The MODIS NIR PWV performs better than that of IR PWV data in most areas of Mainland China regardless of whether with calibration. The validation and calibration of MODIS water vapor products over Mainland China also indicate their capability to investigate the seasonal and annual variations as well as long-term trend changes in water vapor in China.
