Role of Micronutrient Supplementation in Promoting Cognitive Healthy Aging in Latin America: Evidence-Based Consensus Statement

Background: Cognitive decline is a growing public health concern in Latin America, driven by rapid aging, widespread micronutrient inadequacies, and socioeconomic disparities. Despite the recognized importance of nutrition, many older adults struggle to meet daily dietary micronutrients requirements, increasing the risk of mild cognitive impairment (MCI). This study aimed to establish expert consensus on the role of Multivitamin and Mineral supplements (MVMs) in promoting cognitive healthy aging among older adults in Latin America. Methods: A panel of nine experts in geriatrics, neurology, and nutrition applied a modified Delphi methodology to generate consensus statements. The panel reviewed the literature, engaged in expert discussions, and used structured voting to develop consensus statements. Results: Consensus was reached on 14 statements. Experts agreed that cognitive aging in Latin America is influenced by neurobiological, lifestyle, and socioeconomic factors, including widespread micronutrient inadequacies (vitamins B-complex, C, D, E, and minerals such as zinc, magnesium, chromium, copper, iron and selenium), which were identified as critical for global cognitive function and brain structures, yet commonly inadequate in the elderly. While a balanced diet remains essential, MVMs can be recommended as a complementary strategy to bridge nutritional gaps. Supporting evidence, including the COSMOS-Mind trials, demonstrate that MVM use improves memory and global cognition, and reduces cognitive aging by up to 2 years in older adults. Conclusions: MVMs offer a promising, accessible adjunct for cognitive healthy aging in Latin America’s elderly population, particularly where dietary challenges persist. Region-specific guidelines, public health initiatives, and targeted research are warranted to optimize outcomes and reduce health inequities. Full article

Background/Objectives: Most snakebite incidents in Latin America are caused by species of the Bothrops genus. Their venom induces severe local effects, against which antivenom therapy has limited efficacy. Metabolites derived from Coffea arabica have demonstrated anti-inflammatory and anticoagulant properties, suggesting their potential as therapeutic agents to inhibit the local effects induced by B. asper venom. Methods: Three enzymatic assays were performed: inhibition of the procoagulant and amidolytic activities of snake venom serine proteinases (SVSPs); inhibition of the proteolytic activity of snake venom metalloproteinases (SVMPs); and inhibition of the catalytic activity of snake venom phospholipases A2 (PLA2s). Additionally, molecular docking studies were conducted to propose potential inhibitory mechanisms of the metabolites chlorogenic acid, caffeine, and caffeic acid. Results: Green and roasted coffee extracts partially inhibited the enzymatic activity of SVSPs and SVMPs. Notably, the green coffee extract, at a 1:20 ratio, effectively inhibited PLA2 activity. Among the individual metabolites tested, partial inhibition of SVSP and PLA2 activities was observed, whereas no significant inhibition of SVMP proteolytic activity was detected. Chlorogenic acid was the most effective metabolite, significantly prolonging plasma coagulation time and achieving up to 82% inhibition at a concentration of 62.5 μM. Molecular docking analysis revealed interactions between chlorogenic acid and key active site residues of SVSP and PLA2 enzymes from B. asper venom. Conclusions: The roasted coffee extract demonstrated the highest inhibitory effect on venom toxins, potentially due to the formation of bioactive compounds during the Maillard reaction. Molecular modeling suggests that the tested inhibitors may bind to and occupy the substrate-binding clefts of the target enzymes. These findings support further in vivo research to explore the use of plant-derived polyphenols as adjuvant therapies in the treatment of snakebite envenoming. Full article

By 2050, it is estimated that approximately 200 million people will be displaced due to the impacts of climate change. Vulnerability to climate change is shaped not only by environmental factors but fundamentally by systemic power relations and structural conditions present at both the places of origin and destination. In Latin America, climate-displaced persons predominantly settle in marginalised neighbourhoods, where widely accepted informality facilitates their rapid arrival but obstructs genuine progress and full integration as urban citizens. This paper critically examines the prevailing myths that justify the persistence of informality, revealing the socioeconomic challenges faced by climate migrants in the region. These four dominant myths are (1) Latin America’s inherently low productivity levels; (2) concessions by the ruling class enabling excluded groups to merely survive; (3) the perceived privilege of marginalised neighbourhoods to generate income outside formal legal frameworks, which supports their social capital; and (4) the limited benefits associated with formalisation. Debunking these myths is essential for developing effective public policies aimed at reducing informality and promoting inclusive urban integration, ultimately benefiting both climate migrants and host communities. Background: Breast cancer remains a major public health challenge in Latin America, where access to personalized risk assessment tools is still limited. This study aimed to evaluate the implementation of a polygenic risk score (PRS)-based stratification model combined with remote genomic counseling in Colombian women with sporadic breast cancer and healthy women. Methods: In 2023, an embedded mixed-methods observational study was conducted in Medellín involving 1997 women aged 40–75 years who underwent clinical PRS testing. The intervention integrated PRS-based risk categorization with individualized risk factor assessment and lifestyle recommendations delivered through a remote counseling platform. Results: PRS analysis classified 9.7% of women as high risk and 46% as low risk. Healthier lifestyle patterns were significantly associated with lower PRS categories (p = 0.034). Physical activity showed a protective effect (OR = 0.60, 95% CI: 0.5–0.8), while prior smoking, elevated BMI, and sedentary behavior were associated with higher risk. The counseling model achieved high delivery (93%) and satisfaction (85%) rates. Qualitative insights revealed improved understanding of genomic risk and greater engagement in preventive behaviors. Only one new case of breast cancer was detected among intermediate-risk participants, with a diagnostic lead time of 12 months. Conclusions: These findings support the feasibility, acceptability, and potential impact of integrating PRS and genomic counseling in cancer prevention strategies in middle-income settings. Introduction: Breakfast has emerged as a critical factor in preventing cardiovascular diseases, driven not only by its nutritional content but also by its alignment with circadian rhythms. However, gaps remain in the literature regarding its clinical impact and thematic evolution. Objective: To characterize the global scientific output on the relationship between breakfast quality and cardiovascular health through a systematic bibliometric analysis. Methodology: The PRISMA 2020 protocol was applied to select 1436 original articles indexed in Scopus and Web of Science (1957–2025). Bibliometric tools, including R (v4.4.2) and VOSviewer (v1.6.19) were used to map productivity, impact, collaboration networks, and emerging thematic areas. Results: Scientific output has grown exponentially since 2000. The most influential journals are the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition, Nutrients, and Diabetes Care. The United States, United Kingdom, and Japan lead in publication volume and citations, with increasing participation from Latin American countries. Thematic trends have shifted from traditional clinical markers to innovative approaches such as chrononutrition, digital health, and personalized nutrition. However, methodological gaps persist, including a predominance of observational studies and an underrepresentation of vulnerable populations. Conclusions: Breakfast is a dietary practice with profound implications for cardiometabolic health. This study provides a comprehensive overview of scientific literature, highlighting both advancements and challenges. Strengthening international collaboration networks, standardizing definitions of a healthy breakfast, and promoting evidence-based interventions in school, clinical, and community settings are recommended. Sustainable education requires addressing the challenges posed by digital transformation, including technostress among university students. This study evaluates technostress levels in higher education through the validation of the TS4US scale and its implications for sustainable learning environments. A cross-sectional study was conducted with 328 university students from four districts in Lima, Peru, using an online survey to measure technostress. Confirmatory factor analysis (CFA) was performed to assess the psychometric properties of the TS4US scale, resulting in a refined model with two latent factors and thirteen validated items. Findings indicate that 28% of students experience high technostress levels, while 5% report very high levels, though no significant associations were found between technostress and sociodemographic variables such as campus location, employment status, gender, and academic level. The TS4US instrument had been previously validated in Chile; this study confirms its structure in a new sociocultural context, reinforcing its cross-cultural applicability. These results highlight the need for sustainable strategies to mitigate technostress in higher education, including institutional support, digital literacy programs, and policies fostering a balanced technological environment. Addressing technostress is essential for promoting sustainable education (SDG4) and enhancing student well-being (SDG3). This study directly contributes to the achievement of Sustainable Development Goals 3 (Good Health and Well-being) and 4 (Quality Education) by providing validated tools and evidence-based recommendations to promote mental health and equitable access to digital education in Latin America. Future research should explore cross-country comparisons and targeted interventions, including digital well-being initiatives and adaptive learning strategies, to ensure a resilient and sustainable academic ecosystem. Introduction: Long COVID syndrome is defined as persistent or new symptoms that appear after an acute SARS-CoV-2 infection and last at least three months without explanation. It is estimated that between 10% and 20% of those infected develop long COVID; however, data is not precise in Latin America. Although high immunization rates have reduced acute symptoms and the pandemic’s impact, there is a lack of evidence of its efficacy in preventing long COVID in the region. Methods: This scoping review followed PRISMA-ScR guidelines. Studies on vaccinated adults with long COVID from Central and South America and the Caribbean were included (Mexico was also considered). A comprehensive search across multiple databases was conducted. Data included study design, participant characteristics, vaccine type, and efficacy outcomes. Results are presented narratively and in tables. Results: Out of 3466 initial records, 8 studies met the inclusion criteria after rigorous selection processes. These studies encompassed populations from Brazil, Mexico, Latin America, and Bonaire, with 11,333 participants, 69.3% of whom were female. Vaccination, particularly with three or more doses, substantially reduces the risk and duration of long COVID. Variability was noted in the definitions and outcomes assessed across studies. Conclusions: This scoping review highlights that SARS-CoV-2 vaccination exhibits potential in reducing the burden of long COVID in the Americas. However, discrepancies in vaccine efficacy were observed depending on the study design, the population studied, and the vaccine regimen employed. Further robust, region-specific investigations are warranted to delineate the effects of vaccination on long COVID outcomes. Full article

Carbapenem resistance is considered one of the greatest current threats to public health, particularly in the management of infections in clinical settings. Carbapenem resistance in bacteria is mainly due to mechanisms such as the production of carbapenemases (such as the imipenemase IMP, or other enzymes like VIM, NDM, and KPC), that can be detected by several laboratory tests, including immunochromatography and automated real-time PCR (qPCR). Methods: As part of local studies to monitor carbapenem-resistant bacteria in Costa Rica, two cases were initially identified with inconsistent IMP detection results. A possible gene drop-out in the automated qPCR test was suggested based on the negative result, contrasting with the positive result by immunochromatography and whole-genome sequencing. We hypothesized that molecular testing could be optimized through the development of tailored assays to improve the detection of IMP genes. Thus, using IMP gene sequences from the local isolates and regional sequences in databases, primers were redesigned to extend the detection of IMP alleles of regional relevance. Results: The tailored qPCR was applied to a local collection of 119 carbapenem-resistant isolates. The genomes of all 14 positive cases were sequenced, verifying the results of the custom qPCR, despite the negative results of the automated testing. Conclusions: Guided by whole-genome sequencing, it was possible to extend the molecular detection of IMP alleles circulating in Latin America using a tailored qPCR to overcome IMP gene drop-out and false-negative results in an automated qPCR. Climate change is jeopardizing global food security, with at least 713 million people facing hunger. To face this challenge, legumes as common beans could offer a nature-based solution, sourcing nutrients and dietary fiber, especially for rural communities in Latin America and Africa. However, since common beans are generally heat and drought susceptible, it is imperative to speed up their molecular introgressive adaptive breeding so that they can be cultivated in regions affected by extreme weather. Therefore, this study aimed to couple an advanced panel of common bean (Phaseolus vulgaris L.) × tolerant Tepary bean (P. acutifolius A. Gray) interspecific lines with Bayesian regression algorithms to forecast adaptation to the humid and dry sub-regions at the Caribbean coast of Colombia, where the common bean typically exhibits maladaptation to extreme heat waves. A total of 87 advanced lines with hybrid ancestries were successfully bred, surpassing the interspecific incompatibilities. This hybrid panel was genotyped by sequencing (GBS), leading to the discovery of 15,645 single-nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) markers. Three yield components (yield per plant, and number of seeds and pods) and two biomass variables (vegetative and seed biomass) were recorded for each genotype and inputted in several Bayesian regression models to identify the top genotypes with the best genetic breeding values across three localities on the Colombian coast. We comparatively analyzed several regression approaches, and the model with the best performance for all traits and localities was BayesC. Also, we compared the utilization of all markers and only those determined as associated by a priori genome-wide association studies (GWAS) models. Better prediction ability with the complete SNP set was indicative of missing heritability as part of GWAS reconstructions. Furthermore, optimal SNP sets per trait and locality were determined as per the top 500 most explicative markers according to their β regression effects. These 500 SNPs, on average, overlapped in 5.24% across localities, which reinforced the locality-dependent nature of polygenic adaptation. Finally, we retrieved the genomic estimated breeding values (GEBVs) and selected the top 10 genotypes for each trait and locality as part of a recommendation scheme targeting narrow adaption in the Caribbean. After validation in field conditions and for screening stability, candidate genotypes and SNPs may be used in further introgressive breeding cycles for adaptation. Full article

The history of the rabies virus dates back four millennia, with the virus being considered by many to be the first known transmitted between animals and humans. In Brazil, rabies virus variants associated with terrestrial wild animals, marmosets, and different bat species have been identified. In this study, bat samples from different regions of São Paulo State, in Southeast Brazil, were analyzed to identify their genetic variability and patterns. A total of 51 samples were collected over ten years (1999–2009) and submitted to the immunofluorescent technique using monoclonal antibodies for antigenic profile detection (the diagnostic routine used in Latin American countries) and genetic evolution analysis through maximum likelihood approaches. Three antigenic profiles were detected: one related to the rabies virus maintained by hematophagous bat populations (AgV3), part of the monoclonal antibody panel used, and two other profiles not included in the panel (called NC1 and NC2). These antigenic profiles were genetically distributed in five groups. Group I was related to hematophagous bats (AgV3), Groups II and III were related to insectivorous bats (NC1) and Groups IV and V were also related to insectivorous bats (NC2). The results presented herein show that genetic lineages previously restricted to the northwest region of São Paulo State are now found in other state regions, highlighting the need for a comprehensive genetic study of bat rabies covering geographic and temporal space, through expanded genomic analysis using a standard genomic fragment. Cuscohygrine (CUS) and hygrine (HYG) are pyrrolidine alkaloids proposed as biomarkers of coca leaf consumption, a culturally accepted practice in some Latin American countries. Differentiating legal coca use from illicit cocaine consumption holds forensic importance. While LC-MS/MS is preferred, GC-MS remains widely used in Latin American toxicology labs due to accessibility. This study critically evaluates the analytical limitations of GC-MS for detecting CUS and HYG in biological matrices. Key parameters—injector temperature (180–290 °C), injection mode (split/splitless), solvent, liner condition, and matrix—were systematically studied. GC-MS showed significant limitations: low-abundance, non-specific fragments (m/z 42, 84, 98, 140) failed to meet the identification criteria in SIM mode. Thermal degradation of CUS to HYG and CUS-d6 to HYG-d3 was observed, especially with splitless injection and aged liners. Matrix effects produced signal enhancement ranging from +29% to +316%, meaning that analyte responses in biological samples were significantly higher than in neat standards, likely due to reduced degradation or adsorption. Although deuterated internal standards (CUS-d6) partially corrected signal variability and matrix enhancement, these corrections were not sufficient to overcome the fundamental limitations of GC-MS, including poor ion specificity and compound instability. These findings support the need for LC-MS/MS-based approaches for reliable alkaloid detection and question the suitability of GC-MS for CUS analysis in forensic toxicology contexts. Full article

Towards Personalized Precision Oncology: A Feasibility Study of NGS-Based Variant Analysis of FFPE CRC Samples in a Chilean Public Health System Laboratory

Massively parallel or next-generation sequencing (NGS) has enabled the genetic characterization of cancer patients, allowing the identification of somatic and germline variants associated with their diagnosis, tumor classification, and therapy response. Despite its benefits, NGS testing is not yet available in the Chilean public health system, rendering it both costly and time-consuming for patients and clinicians. Using a retrospective cohort of 67 formalin-fixed, paraffin-embedded (FFPE) colorectal cancer (CRC) samples, we aimed to implement the identification, annotation, and prioritization of relevant actionable tumor somatic variants in our laboratory, as part of the public health system. We compared two different library preparation methodologies (amplicon-based and capture-based) and different bioinformatics pipelines for sequencing analysis to assess advantages and disadvantages of each one. We obtained 80.5% concordance between actionable variants detected in our analysis and those obtained in the Cancer Genomics Laboratory from the Universidad de Chile (62 out of 77 variants), a validated laboratory for this methodology. Notably, 98.4% (61 out of 62) of variants detected previously by the validated laboratory were also identified in our analysis. Then, comparing the hybridization capture-based library preparation methodology with the amplicon-based strategy, we found ~94% concordance between identified actionable variants across the 15 shared genes, analyzed by the TumorSecTM bioinformatics pipeline, developed by the Cancer Genomics Laboratory. Our results demonstrate that it is entirely viable to implement an NGS-based analysis of actionable variant identification and prioritization in cancer samples in our laboratory, being part of the Chilean public health system and paving the way to improve the access to such analyses. Considering the economic realities of most Latin American countries, using a small NGS panel, such as TumorSecTM, focused on relevant variants of the Chilean and Latin American population is a cost-effective approach to extensive global NGS panels. Furthermore, the incorporation of automated bioinformatics analysis in this streamlined assay holds the potential of facilitating the implementation of precision medicine in this geographic region, which aims to greatly support personalized treatment of cancer patients in Chile. This paper proposes a strategic framework to enhance nuclear energy governance by advancing the Qudrat-Ullah Nuclear Peace and Trust (Q-NPT) framework. Designed to complement existing treaties such as the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT) and International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) safeguards, Q-NPT integrates principles of equity, transparency, and trust to address persistent governance challenges. The framework emphasizes sustainable nuclear technology access, multilateral cooperation, and integration with global energy transition goals. Through an analysis of institutional, economic, technological, and geopolitical barriers, the study outlines actionable pathways for adoption, including legal harmonization, differentiated financial instruments, and deployment of advanced verification technologies such as blockchain, artificial intelligence (AI), and remote monitoring. A phased implementation timeline is presented, enabling adaptive learning and stakeholder engagement over short-, medium-, and long-term horizons. Regional case studies, including Serbia and Latin America, demonstrate the framework’s applicability in diverse contexts. By linking nuclear policy to broader climate, energy equity, and global security objectives, Q-NPT offers an operational and inclusive roadmap for future-ready governance. This approach contributes to the literature on energy systems transformation by situating nuclear governance within a sustainability-oriented, trust-centered paradigm. Full article

The growing disconnection between humans and nature—particularly in urban environments—has been associated with declining well-being and lower engagement in pro-environmental behavior. Although the Connectedness with Nature Scale (CNS) has been widely used internationally to measure this relationship, there is a lack of evidence on its validity and reliability in Latin American contexts, especially in urban and rural settings. This study aims to address this gap by examining the psychometric properties of the CNS in a sample of 956 Colombian participants. Using exploratory and confirmatory factor analyses, we tested two versions of the scale (14-item and 12-item models), both showing good fit and high internal consistency (α > 0.90). Convergent validity was confirmed through strong correlations with the Environmental Identity and Pro-environmental Behavior Scales. These findings support the CNS as a valid and reliable tool to assess the human–nature connection in Colombia and highlight its potential for informing urban sustainability initiatives, environmental education, and public policy in diverse sociocultural contexts. Sacred choral music continues to hold a significant place in contemporary concert settings, with historical and newly composed works featuring in today’s choral programmes. Contemporary choral composers have continued to engage with the longstanding tradition of setting sacred texts to music, bringing fresh interpretations through their innovative compositional techniques and fusion of styles. Irish composer Rhona Clarke’s (b. 1958) expansive choral oeuvre includes a wealth of both sacred and secular compositions but reveals a notable propensity for the setting of sacred texts in Latin. Her synthesis of archaic and contemporary techniques within her work demonstrates both the solemn and visceral aspects of these texts, as well as a clear nod to tradition. This article focuses on Clarke’s choral work O Vis Aeternitatis (2020), a setting of a text by the medieval musician and saint Hildegard of Bingen (c. 1150). Through critical score analysis, we investigate the piece’s melodic, harmonic, and textural frameworks; the influence of Hildegard’s original chant; and the use of extended vocal techniques and contrasting vocal timbres as we articulate core characteristics of Clarke’s compositional style and underline her foregrounding of the more visceral aspects of Hildegard’s words. Clarke’s fusion of creative practices from past and present spotlights moments of dramatic escalation and spiritual importance, and exhibits the composer’s distinctive compositional voice as she reimagines Hildegard’s text for the twenty-first century.
