To evaluate the response of broiler breeder hens submitted to different amino acid intakes of methionine+cystine, lysine, and threonine, and to determine the coefficients for egg output and body weight for maintenance. Three studies were performed using 160 broiler breeder hens housed individually in metabolic cages. A summit diet and a nitrogen-free diet were formulated. The levels ranged from 1.79 to 7.13, 2.49 to 8.3, and 2.04 to 6.79 g/kg of methionine+cystine, lysine, and threonine, respectively. The variables measured were feed intake, amino acid intake, rate of lay, egg weight, and egg output. The broken line model was used to evaluate the responses. It was verified that higher values of the rate of lay, egg weight, and egg output were observed for the higher concentrations of amino acids studied. A significant difference was observed for the variables rate of lay, egg weight, egg output, and body weight (p < 0.05) for the three amino acids evaluated. The amount of each amino acid required to produce one gram per egg was estimated at 12.4 mg, 14.5 mg, and 11.2 mg for methionine+cystine, lysine, and threonine, respectively. The values estimated by coefficient b that represent the amino acid for maintenance requirement were methionine+cystine, lysine, and threonine of 30.2, 32.2, and 42.4 mg/kg BW, respectively. The coefficients may be used to design additional models to study requirements nutrition in broiler breeders, allowing a better understanding of how these birds respond to different dietary amino acids. Background/Objectives: Dietary patterns have changed over time, characterising a process of nutritional transition that reflects socioeconomic and demographic inequalities among different populations. This study assessed changes in dietary consumption patterns and the associated social determinants, comparing two time periods in a sample of individuals from a state in the Northeast Region of Brazil. Methods: Data from the 2008–2009 and 2017–2018 Household Budget Survey for the state of Paraíba were analysed, totalling 951 and 1456 individuals, respectively. Foods were categorised according to the NOVA classification and compared based on sociodemographic and economic variables. To determine the factors that most strongly explain the contribution of each NOVA food group to the diet, beta regression analysis was conducted. Results: Differences were observed between the two periods regarding the dietary contribution of the NOVA food groups, with a decrease in consumption of unprocessed foods and an increase in ultra-processed foods. Living in urban areas, being an adolescent, and having an income above the minimum wage were associated with reduced intake of unprocessed foods in both periods. Additionally, being an adolescent and having more than eight years of schooling were associated with higher consumption of ultra-processed foods. Conclusions: The population under study showed changes in food consumption, reflecting a transition process that is occurring unevenly across socioeconomic and demographic groups, thereby reinforcing social inequalities. These findings can guide priorities in food and nutrition policies, highlighting the need for intervention studies to evaluate the effectiveness of such actions. Full article

Background/Objectives: Due to the significant overlap in symptoms between COVID-19 and other respiratory infections, a multiplex PCR-based platform was developed to simultaneously detect 22 respiratory pathogens. Target sequences were retrieved from the GenBank database and aligned using Clustal Omega 2.1 to identify conserved regions prioritized for primer design. Primers were designed using Primer Express® 3.0.1 and evaluated in Primer Explorer to ensure specificity and minimize secondary structures. A multiplex strategy organized primers into three groups, each labeled with distinct fluorophores (FAM, VIC, or NED), allowing for detection by conventional PCR or capillary electrophoresis (CE). Methods: After reverse transcription for RNA targets, amplification was performed in a single-tube reaction. A total of 340 clinical samples—nasopharyngeal and saliva swabs—were collected from patients, during the COVID-19 pandemic period. The automated analysis of electropherograms enabled precise pathogen identification. Results: Of the samples analyzed, 57.1% tested negative for all pathogens. SARS-CoV-2 was the most frequently detected pathogen (29%), followed by enterovirus (6.5%). Positive results were detected in both nasopharyngeal and saliva swabs, with SARS-CoV-2 predominating in saliva samples. Conclusion: This single-tube multiplex PCR-CE assay represents a cost-effective and robust approach for comprehensive respiratory pathogen detection. It enables rapid and simultaneous diagnosis, facilitating targeted treatment strategies and improved patient outcomes. Full article

This study presents a comprehensive inventory of bryophytes in Serra dos Órgãos National Park (PARNASO), aiming to evaluate species richness, floristic composition and threatened taxa. Despite the state of Rio de Janeiro being one of the most extensively sampled regions for bryophytes in Brazil, detailed surveys of its conservation units remain scarce. Data were obtained through bibliographic review, herbarium specimen analysis, and new field collections. A total of 504 species were recorded, belonging to 202 genera and 76 families. The park harbors three locally endemic species, eight endemic to Rio de Janeiro, and sixty-nine species endemic to Brazil. Additionally, eleven species were identified as threatened, comprising seven Endangered (EN), two Critically Endangered (CR), and two Vulnerable (VU) according to the IUCN guidelines. PARNASO includes four distinct ecosystems along an altitudinal gradient: sub-montane forest (up to 500 m), montane forest (500–1500 m), upper-montane forest (1500–2000 m), and high-altitude fields (above 2000 m). Montane Forest showed the highest species richness, followed by high-altitude fields, upper-montane forest, and sub-montane forest. The findings highlight PARNASO’s importance in preserving bryophyte diversity in a highly diverse yet understudied region. This work contributes valuable baseline data to support conservation strategies and future ecological studies in Atlantic Forest remnants. Full article

Incineration at sea is a significant source of marine pollution, threatening biodiversity and public health. Although Peru ratified the 1996 London Protocol in 2018, key deficiencies persist in its domestic legal framework, particularly the absence of clear and internationally aligned definitions for “incineration” and “incinerator.” These gaps hinder effective enforcement by the National Maritime Authority (NMA-DICAPI) and limit regulatory compliance with international obligations. This study analyzes Peru’s current legislation in light of the London Protocol and includes a comparative overview of regional regulatory approaches in Latin America. Based on this analysis, the study identifies regulatory inconsistencies that compromise environmental protection and proposes three key legal reforms: (1) refining the definition of “incineration” to reflect international standards; (2) formally incorporating a definition for “incinerator”; and (3) establishing specific administrative and economic sanctions for related infractions. Through comparative analysis with Mexico and Colombia’s approaches, we propose targeted amendments including refined definitions aligned with IMO standards and explicit administrative/economic sanctions. Implementing these recommendations would enhance Peru’s legal clarity, enforcement capacity, and compliance with international maritime law, reinforcing its role as a responsible actor in marine environmental governance. Background: Diabetic foot ulcers (DFUs) are a serious complication of diabetes and are often difficult to treat. Hyperbaric oxygen therapy (HBOT) has been proposed as an adjunctive treatment to promote healing, but its long-term clinical and biological effects remain insufficiently characterized. This study aimed to evaluate the impact of HBOT on systemic biomarkers, local microvasculature, and clinical outcomes in patients with DFUs. Methods: In this non-randomized prospective study, 20 patients with ischemic DFUs were followed over a 36-month period. Fourteen received HBOT in addition to standard care, while six received standard care alone. Clinical outcomes—including DFU resolution, recurrence, lower extremity amputation (LEA), and mortality—were assessed alongside systemic inflammatory and angiogenic biomarkers and wound characteristics at baseline and at 3, 6, 12, and 36 months. CD31 immunostaining was performed on available tissue samples. Results: The two groups were comparable at baseline (mean age 62 ± 12 years; diabetes duration 18 ± 9 years). At 3 months, the HBOT group showed significant reductions in erythrocyte sedimentation rate and DFU size (p < 0.05), with downward trends observed in C-reactive protein (CRP), vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF), and placental growth factor (PlGF), and an increase in stromal-derived factor-1 alpha (SDF1-α). No significant changes were observed in the control group. CD31+ microvessel density appeared to increase in HBOT-treated DFU tissue after one month, although the sample size was limited. Patients receiving HBOT had lower rates of LEA and mortality, improved wound healing, and sustained outcomes over three years. DFU recurrence rates were similar between groups. Conclusions: HBOT was associated with improved wound healing and favorable biomarker profiles in patients with treatment-resistant ischemic DFUs. While these findings are encouraging, the small sample size and non-randomized design limit their generalizability, highlighting the need for larger, controlled studies. Full article

Oil spill simulation models are essential for predicting the oil spill behavior and movement in marine environments. In this study, we comprehensively reviewed a large and diverse body of peer-reviewed literature obtained from Scopus and Web of Science. Our initial analysis phase focused on examining trends in scientific publications, utilizing the complete dataset derived after systematic screening and database integration. In the second phase, we applied elements of a systematic review to identify and evaluate the most influential contributions in the scientific field of oil spill simulations. Our analysis revealed a steady and accelerating growth of research activity over the past five decades, with a particularly notable expansion in the last two. The field has also experienced a marked increase in collaborative practices, including a rise in international co-authorship and multi-authored contributions, reflecting a more global and interdisciplinary research landscape. We cataloged the key modeling frameworks that have shaped the field from established systems such as OSCAR, OIL-MAP/SIMAP, and GNOME to emerging hybrid and Lagrangian approaches. Hydrodynamic models were consistently central, often integrated with biogeochemical, wave, atmospheric, and oil-spill-specific modules. Environmental variables such as wind, ocean currents, and temperature were frequently used to drive model behavior. Geographically, research has concentrated on ecologically and economically sensitive coastal and marine regions. We conclude that future progress will rely on the real-time integration of high-resolution environmental data streams, the development of machine-learning-based surrogate models to accelerate computations, and the incorporation of advanced biodegradation and weathering mechanisms supported by experimental data. These advancements are expected to enhance the accuracy, responsiveness, and operational value of oil spill modeling tools, supporting environmental monitoring and emergency response. Full article

Annona amazonica R.E. Fries (synonyms Annona amazonica var. lancifolia R.E. Fries), popularly known in Brazil as “envireira”, is a tropical tree belonging to the Annonaceae family and is traditionally used as a food source. In this work, the in vitro and in vivo anti-liver cancer effects of essential oil (EO) from A. amazonica leaves were investigated for the first time. The chemical composition of the EO was evaluated via GC–MS and GC–FID. The alamar blue assay was used to evaluate the cytotoxicity of EOs against different cancerous and noncancerous cell lines. Cell cycle analyses, YO-PRO-1/PI staining, and rhodamine 123 staining were performed via flow cytometry in HepG2 cells treated with EO. The in vivo antitumor activity of EO was evaluated in NSG mice that were xenografted with HepG2 cells and treated with EO at a dose of 60 mg/kg. The major constituents (>5%) of the EO were (E)-caryophyllene (32.01%), 1,8-cineole (13.93%), α-copaene (7.77%), α-humulene (7.15%), and α-pinene (5.13%). EO increased apoptosis and proportionally decreased the number of viable HepG2 cells. The induction of DNA fragmentation and cell shrinkage together with a significant reduction in the ΔΨm in EO-treated HepG2 cells confirmed that EO can induce apoptosis. A significant 39.2% inhibition of tumor growth in vivo was detected in EO-treated animals. These data indicate the anti-liver cancer potential of EO from A. amazonica leaves. Full article

Work Engagement and Compassion Fatigue Among Nursing Professionals During the COVID-19 Pandemic: A Cross-Sectional and Single-Center Study Using the ProQOL-BR and UWES-9 Scales

Objectives: This study investigated levels of work engagement and the occurrence of compassion fatigue among nursing professionals during the COVID-19 pandemic. Methods: A cross-sectional, descriptive, and correlational study was conducted at a Brazilian university hospital between February and April 2022. The Brazilian versions of the Utrecht Work Engagement Scale (UWES-9) and the Professional Quality of Life Scale (ProQOL-BR) were administered. Results: High levels of compassion satisfaction (44.9 points), low levels of burnout (21.0 points), and low levels of secondary traumatic stress (22.8 points) were observed. No professional demonstrated a profile consistent with compassion fatigue. Engagement levels were high for dedication (5.3) and moderate for vigor (4.9), absorption (4.5), and overall engagement (4.9). Burnout showed moderate negative correlations with vigor (r = −0.611, p = 0.005) and dedication (r = −0.599, p = 0.019). Compassion satisfaction showed moderate positive correlations with vigor (r = 0.522, p < 0.001) and dedication (r = 0.572, p < 0.001). The overall engagement score was moderately and positively correlated with compassion satisfaction (r = 0.532, p < 0.001). Conclusions: This study identified high levels of work engagement, especially regarding dedication, and low levels of compassion fatigue among nursing professionals. The data suggest that even amid the emotional and physical demands imposed by the pandemic, participants preserved their emotional well-being and maintained a positive relationship with their work. Multitarget Design of Steroidal Inhibitors Against Hormone-Dependent Breast Cancer: An Integrated In Silico Approach

Hormone-dependent breast cancer, particularly in its treatment-resistant forms, remains a significant therapeutic challenge. In this study, we applied a fully computational strategy to design steroid-based compounds capable of simultaneously targeting three key receptors involved in disease progression: progesterone receptor (PR), estrogen receptor alpha (ER-α), and HER2. Using a robust 3D-QSAR model (R2 = 0.86; Q2_LOO = 0.86) built from 52 steroidal structures, we identified molecular features associated with high anticancer potential, specifically increased polarizability and reduced electronegativity. From a virtual library of 271 DFT-optimized analogs, 31 compounds were selected based on predicted potency (pIC50 > 7.0) and screened via molecular docking against PR (PDB 2W8Y), HER2 (PDB 7JXH), and ER-α (PDB 6VJD). Seven candidates showed strong binding affinities (ΔG ≤ −9 kcal/mol for at least two targets), with Estero-255 emerging as the most promising. This compound demonstrated excellent conformational stability, a robust hydrogen-bonding network, and consistent multitarget engagement. Molecular dynamics simulations over 100 nanoseconds confirmed the structural integrity of the top ligands, with low RMSD values, compact radii of gyration, and stable binding energy profiles. Key interactions included hydrophobic contacts, π–π stacking, halogen–π interactions, and classical hydrogen bonds with conserved residues across all three targets. These findings highlight Estero-255, alongside Estero-261 and Estero-264, as strong multitarget candidates for further development. By potentially disrupting the PI3K/AKT/mTOR signaling pathway, these compounds offer a promising strategy for overcoming resistance in hormone-driven breast cancer. Experimental validation, including cytotoxicity assays and ADME/Tox profiling, is recommended to confirm their therapeutic potential. Full article

Predicting the Body Weight of Tilapia Fingerlings from Images Using Computer Vision

The aim of this study was to develop a mathematical model to predict the body weight of tilapia fingerlings using variables obtained through computer vision. A total of 2092 tilapia fingerlings and juveniles, weighing between 10 and 100 g, were fasted for 12 h, anesthetized, weighed, and photographed using an iPhone 12 Pro Max at 33 cm height in a closed container with different bottom colors. Images were segmented using Roboflow’s instance segmentation model, achieving 99.5% mean average precision, 99.9% precision, and 100% recall. From the segmented images, area, perimeter, major axis (MA), minor axis (SA), X and Y centroids, compactness, eccentricity, and the MA/SA ratio were extracted. Seventy percent of the data was used to build the model, and 30% for validation. Stepwise multiple regression (backward selection) was performed, using body weight as the dependent variable. The prediction model was: −17.7677 + 0.0007539(area) – 0.0848303 (MA) – 0.108338(SA) + 0.0034496(CX). The validation model showed similar coefficients and R2 = 0.99. The second validation, using observed versus predicted values, also yielded an R2 of 0.99 and a mean absolute error of 1.57 g. Correlation and principal component analyses revealed strong positive associations among body weight, area, axes, and predicted values. Computer vision proved effective for predicting tilapia fingerlings’ weight. Full article

A KPI-Based Framework for Evaluating Sustainable Agricultural Practices in Southern Angola

Agricultural production in southern Angola faces challenges due to unsustainable practices, including inefficient use of water, fertilizers, and machinery, resulting in low yields and environmental degradation. Therefore, clear and measurable indicators are needed to guide farmers toward more sustainable practices. The scientific literature insufficiently addresses this issue, leaving a significant gap in the evaluation of key performance indicators (KPIs) that can guide good agricultural practices (GAPs) adapted to the context of southern Angola, with the goal of promoting a more resilient and sustainable agricultural sector. So, the objective of this study is to identify and assess KPIs capable of supporting the selection of GAPs suitable for maize, potato, and tomato cultivation in the context of southern Angolan agriculture. A systematic literature review (SLR) was conducted, screening 2720 articles and selecting 14 studies that met defined inclusion criteria. Five KPIs were identified as the most relevant: gross margin, net profit, water use efficiency, nitrogen use efficiency, and machine energy. These indicators were analyzed and standardized to evaluate their contribution to sustainability across different GAPs. Results show that organic fertilizers are the most sustainable option for maize, drip irrigation for potatoes, and crop rotation for tomatoes in southern Angola because of their efficiency in low-resource environments. A clear, simple, and effective representation of the KPIs was developed to be useful in communicating to farmers and policy makers on the selection of the best GAPs in the cultivation of different crops. The study proposes a validated KPI-based methodology for assessing sustainable agricultural practices in developing regions such as southern Angola, aiming to lead to greater self-sufficiency and economic stability in this sector. An increasing global population, rising energy demands, and the shift toward a circular bioeconomy are driving the need for more resource-efficient waste management. The increase in the world population—now exceeding 8 billion as of 2024—results in an increased need for alternative proteins, both human and feed grade proteins, as well as for biopolymers and bioenergy. As such, agricultural, forest, and marine waste biomass represent a valuable feedstock for production of food and feed ingredients, biopolymers, and bioenergy. However, the lack of integrated and efficient valorization strategies for these diverse biomass sources remains a major challenge. This literature review aims to give a systematic approach on the recent research status of agricultural, forest, and marine waste biomass valorization, focusing on cascade processing (a sequential combination of processes such as pretreatment, extraction, and conversion methods). Potential products will be identified that create the most economic value over multiple lifetimes, to maximize resource efficiency. It highlights the challenges associated with cascade processing of waste biomass and proposes technological synergies for waste biomass valorization. Moreover, this review will provide a comprehensive understanding of the potential of waste biomass valorization in the context of sustainable and circular bioeconomy. Full article

Physiological and Chemical Response of Urochloa brizantha to Edaphic and Microclimatic Variations Along an Altitudinal Gradient in the Amazon

Urochloa brizantha (Brizantha) is cultivated under varying altitudinal and management conditions. Twelve full-sun (monoculture) plots and twelve shaded (silvopastoral) plots were established, proportionally distributed at 170, 503, 661, and 1110 masl. Evaluations were conducted 15, 30, 45, 60, and 75 days after establishment. The conservation and integration of trees in silvopastoral systems reflected a clear anthropogenic influence, evidenced by the preference for species of the Fabaceae family, likely due to their multipurpose nature. Although the altitudinal gradient did not show direct effects on soil properties, intermediate altitudes revealed a significant role of CaCO3 in enhancing soil fertility. These edaphic conditions at mid-altitudes favored the leaf area development of Brizantha, particularly during the early growth stages, as indicated by significantly larger values (p < 0.05). However, at the harvest stage, no significant differences were observed in physiological or productive traits, nor in foliar chemical components, underscoring the species’ high hardiness and broad adaptation to both soil and altitude conditions. In Brizantha, a significant reduction (p < 0.05) in stomatal size and density was observed under shade in silvopastoral areas, where solar radiation and air temperature decreased, while relative humidity increased. Nonetheless, these microclimatic variations did not lead to significant changes in foliar chemistry, growth variables, or biomass production, suggesting a high degree of adaptive plasticity to microclimatic fluctuations. Foliar ash content exhibited an increasing trend with altitude, indicating greater efficiency of Brizantha in absorbing calcium, phosphorus, and potassium at higher altitudes, possibly linked to more favorable edaphoclimatic conditions for nutrient uptake. Finally, forage quality declined with plant age, as evidenced by reductions in protein, ash, and In Vitro Dry Matter Digestibility (IVDMD), alongside increases in fiber, Neutral Detergent Fiber (NDF), and Acid Detergent Fiber (ADF). These findings support the recommendation of cutting intervals between 30 and 45 days, during which Brizantha displays a more favorable nutritional profile, higher digestibility, and consequently, greater value for animal feeding. Enhanced colony nutrition can support brood development, resulting in better physiological conditions and increased resilience in adult honey bees, particularly under stress. This study investigated the effects of colony nutrition and adult dietary supplementation with green propolis on bee health under fungicide exposure. Colonies were managed under food restriction or nutritional supplementation for 22 weeks. Newly emerged bees from each colony were then caged and fed protein diets consisting of honey-pollen patties contaminated or not with fungicide, and sucrose sugar syrup with or without aqueous green propolis extract. Bees from supplemented colonies showed greater body weight, higher hemolymph protein levels, and higher consumption of protein food after seven days in cages. Fungicide exposure reduced hemolymph protein levels, altered the expression of detoxification and immune-related genes, and significantly decreased bee survival. Interestingly, propolis supplementation alone changed gene expression patterns and slightly reduced longevity compared to bees not exposed to propolis or fungicide. However, under fungicide stress, bees that ingested propolis survived longer, indicating a protective effect. While colony nutritional supplementation clearly promotes honey bee resilience against fungicide exposure, feeding propolis also showed promising effects, though further studies are needed to determine an optimal dietary concentration.
