This study presents a compact and high-efficiency microstrip antenna integrated with a square electromagnetic band-gap (EBG) structure for radio frequency energy harvesting to power battery-less Internet of Things (IoT) sensors and medical devices in the 5.8 GHz Industrial, Scientific, and Medical (ISM) band. The proposed antenna features a compact design with reduced physical dimensions of 36 × 40 mm2 (0.69λo × 0.76λo) while providing high-performance parameters such as a reflection coefficient of −27.9 dB, a voltage standing wave ratio (VSWR) of 1.08, a gain of 7.91 dBi, directivity of 8.1 dBi, a bandwidth of 188 MHz, and radiation efficiency of 95.5%. Incorporating EBG cells suppresses surface waves, enhances gain, and optimizes impedance matching through 50 Ω inset feeding. The simulated and measured results of the designed antenna show a high correlation. This study demonstrates a robust and promising solution for high-performance wireless systems requiring a compact size and energy-efficient operation. Full article

This paper presents an enhanced circularly polarized (CP) all-textile antenna using a metasurface (MS) and slot-patterned ground (SPG) for 5.8 GHz industry, scientific, and medical (ISM)-band applications in off-body communications. The 3 × 3 MS, capable of converting the incident wave into an orthogonal direction with equal magnitude and a 90° phase difference, converts the linearly polarized (LP) wave, radiated from the fundamental radiator with a corner-truncated slot square-patch configuration, into being CP. The SPG, consisting of periodic slots with two different sizes of corner-truncated slots, redistributes the surface current on the ground plane, enhancing the axial ratio bandwidth (ARBW) of the proposed antenna. The novel combination of MS and SPG not only enables the generation and enhancement of CP characteristics but also significantly improves the impedance bandwidth (IBW), gain, and radiation efficiency by introducing additional surface wave resonances. The proposed antenna is composed of a conductive textile and a felt substrate, offering comfort and flexibility for applications where the antenna is placed in close proximity to the human body. The proposed antenna is simulated under bending in various directions, showing exceptionally similar characteristics to a flat condition. The proposed antenna is fabricated and is then verified by measurements in both free space and a human body environment. The measured IBW is 36.3%, while the ARBW is 18%. The measured gain and radiation efficiency are 6.39 dBic and 64.7%, respectively. The specific absorption rate (SAR) is simulated, and the results satisfy both US and EU safety standards. In low-detectability application scenarios such as covert reconnaissance, wildlife behavior observation, and battlefield detection, antennas not only need to have wideband performance but also require good biomimetic camouflage characteristics. To address this issue, this article proposes a leaf-shaped biomimetic flexible wideband antenna. The design concept of the antenna is inspired by the symmetrical vein structure of aquifoliaceae leaves, incorporating vein-like slots into the radiation patch to form multiple inter-slot capacitances, which improves the high-frequency resonance behavior and expands the antenna’s operating bandwidth. In addition, the traditional rectangular grounding plane is replaced with a semi-elliptical shape, optimizing the electric field distribution between the feed line and the radiation part, thereby improving impedance matching. The measured results show that the leaf-shaped antenna achieves a relative bandwidth of 100% (2.4 GHz–7.1 GHz), with its operating frequency bands covering several common communication bands such as n41, n78, n79, and ISM 5.8 GHz, with a maximum gain of 5.4 dBi. Additionally, the leaf-shaped antenna has a good resemblance to the shape of aquifoliaceae leaves. The antenna’s performance remains relatively stable with bending radii of 40 mm, 50 mm, and 60 mm, demonstrating an important role in camouflage application scenarios. Full article

This article presents the design and evaluation of a compact-sized antenna targeting heterogenous applications working in the C-band, 5G-sub-6GHz, and the ISM band. The antenna offers frequency reconfigurability along with multi-operational modes ranging from wideband to dual-band and tri-band. A compact-sized antenna is designed initially to cover a broad bandwidth that ranges from 4 GHz to 7 GHz. Afterwards, various multiband antennas are formed by loading various stubs. Finally, the wideband antenna along with multi-stub loaded antennas are combined to form a single antenna. Furthermore, PIN diodes are loaded between the main radiator and stubs to activate the stubs on demand, which consequently generates various operational modes. The last stage of the design is optimization, which helps in achieving the desired bandwidths. The optimized antenna works in the wideband mode covering the C-band, Wi-Fi 6E, and the ISM band. Meanwhile, the multiband modes offer the additional coverage of the LTE, LTE 4G, ISM lower band, and GSM band. The various performance parameters are studied and compared with measured results to show the performance stability of the proposed reconfigurable antenna. In addition, an in-depth literature review along with comparison with proposed antenna is performed to show its potential for targeted applications. The utilization of FR4 as a substrate of the antenna along with its compact size of 15 mm × 20 mm while having multiband and multi-mode frequency reconfigurability makes it a strong candidate for present as well as for future smart devices and electronics. The parameters of electromagnetic emissions from the antenna of a wearable radio communication module (parameterizing device functionality) were investigated at different positions near the body where an antenna is located. The specific absorption rate (SAR) coefficient was also investigated as a way of parameterizing the absorption of electromagnetic radiation in the user’s body adjacent to the antenna in various locations. The modeled exposure scenarios concerned a body-worn device with a 2.45 GHz ISM band antenna (used, e.g., for Wi-Fi 2G/Bluetooth applications). The antennas were modeled as follows: (1) located directly on the body (considered to be a model of a disposable, adhesive device) or (2) next to the body (considered to be a model of a classic, reusable, wearable electronic device located inside a plastic housing). Several body sections adjacent to the antenna were considered: head, arm, forearm, and chest (simplified and anatomical body models were used). The numerical models of the exposure scenarios were verified by relevant laboratory tests using physical models. It was found that the use of simplified models of the human body (numerical or physical) may be sufficient when analyzing antenna performance and SAR in a user’s body, such as in studies regarding microwave imaging and sensing, wireless implantable devices, wireless body-area networks or SAR estimation. A novel dual-band multi-linear polarization reconfigurable (MLPR) antenna for body-centric wireless communication systems (BWCS) is presented in this paper. The design comprises five symmetrically arranged multi-branch radiating units, each integrating an elliptical patch and curved spring branch for the Medical Implant Communication Service (MICS) band (403–405 MHz), and a pair of orthogonal strip patches for the Industrial, Scientific and Medical (ISM) 2.45 GHz band (2.40–2.48 GHz). By selectively biasing PIN diodes between each unit and a central pentagonal feed, five distinct LP states with polarization directions of 0, 72, 144, 216, and 288 are achieved. A dual-line isolation structure is introduced to suppress mutual coupling between radiating units, ensuring cross-polarization levels (XPLs) better than 15.0 dB across the operation bands. Prototypes fabricated on a 160×160×1.5 mm3 substrate demonstrate measured |S11|<10 dB across 401–409 MHz and 2.34–2.53 GHz and stable omnidirectional patterns despite biasing circuitry perturbations. The compact form and robust dual-band, multi-polarization performance make the proposed antenna a promising candidate for implantable device wake-up signals and on-body data links in dense indoor environments. The disk of the Milky Way fills the interstellar medium in the form of discrete clouds, many (∼30) light-years across. The average density of this medium is 1 hydrogen atom per cm3 (Oort limit), in the clouds—several dozen atoms, and between the clouds about 0.01 atoms per cm3. It is well documented that physical properties of individual interstellar clouds are evidently different using high-resolution spectroscopic observations of slightly reddened stars. We prove here that the 5780/5797 strength ratio is nearly constant for all slightly reddened targets. The reason for this phenomenon remains unknown. All optically thin clouds are apparently of σ-type. The question of at which value of color excess one may expect a ζ-type cloud remains unanswered. For some (unknown) reason ζ-type clouds are always relatively opaque and contain a lot of molecular species. In all slightly reddened objects we always observe σ-type intervening clouds, almost free of simple molecules. Full article

Globally, there are now more than 19 billion connected Internet of Things (IoT) devices, which are fostering innovation across various sectors, including industry, healthcare, education, energy, and agriculture. With the rapid expansion of IoT devices, there is an increasing demand for sustainable, self-powered, eco-friendly solutions for next-generation IoT devices. Harvesting and converting radio frequency (RF) energy through rectennas is being explored as a potential solution for next-generation self-powered wireless devices. This paper presents a methodology for designing, optimizing, and fabricating a flexible rectenna for RF energy harvesting in the 5G lower mid-band and ISM 2.45 GHz band. The antenna element has a tree form based on a fractal structure, which provides a small size for the rectenna. Furthermore, to reduce the rectenna’s environmental impact, we fabricated the rectenna on a substrate from biodegradable materials—natural rubber filled with rice husk ash. The rectifier circuit was also designed and fabricated on the flexible substrate, facilitating the seamless integration of the rectenna in next-generation low-power IoT devices. The numerical analysis of the parameters and characteristics of rectenna elements, based on the finite-difference time-domain method, demonstrates a high degree of agreement with the experimental results. This paper presents a novel design of a compact dual-band dual-mode wearable antenna. The antenna is fed through a single coaxial feed probe, which excites TM01 and TM11 modes at 2.45 GHz and 5.8 GHz, respectively. These modes exhibit distinct radiation characteristics. The omnidirectional TM01 mode at 2.45 GHz is suitable for on-body communication, while the directional TM11 mode at 5.8 GHz is more appropriate for off-body communication. The antenna prototype was fabricated and measured. The measured performance is consistent with the simulations. Additionally, further simulations and measurements were conducted to verify the interactions between the proposed antenna and the human body. The results demonstrate that the proposed antenna exhibits significant potential as a candidate for wireless body area network (WBAN) communications. Full article

Precipitation cyclicity plays a crucial role in regional water supply and climate predictions. In this study, we used observational data from 34 representative meteorological stations in the Xinjiang region, a major part of inland arid China, to characterize the interannual cyclicity of regional precipitation from 1951 to 2021 and analyze its contributing factors. The results indicated that the mean annual precipitation in Xinjiang (MAP_XJ) was dominated by a remarkably increasing trend over the past 70 years, which was superimposed by two bands of interannual cycles of approximately 3 years with explanatory variance of 56.57% (Band I) and 6–7 years with explanatory variance of 23.38% (Band II). This is generally consistent with previous studies on the cyclicity of precipitation in Xinjiang for both seasonal and annual precipitation. We analyzed the North Tropical Atlantic sea-surface temperature (NTASST), El Niño-Southern Oscillation (ENSO), North Atlantic Oscillation (NAO), Arctic Oscillation (AO), and Indian Summer Monsoon (ISM) as potential forcing factors that show similar interannual cycles and may contribute to the identified precipitation variability. Two approaches, multivariate linear regression and the Random Forest model, were employed to ascertain the relative significance of each factor influencing Bands I and II, respectively. The multivariate linear regression analysis revealed that the AO index contributed the most to Band I, with a significance score of −0.656, whereas the ENSO index with a one-year lead (ENSO−1yr) played a dominant role in Band II (significance score = 0.457). The Random Forest model also suggested that the AO index exhibited the highest significance score (0.859) for Band I, whereas the AO index with a one-year lead (AO−1yr) had the highest significance score (0.876) for Band II. Overall, our findings highlight the necessity of employing different methods that consider both the linear and non-linear response of climate variability to driving factors crucial for future climate prediction. This paper presents a novel Spiral Slot Planar Inverted-F Antenna (SSPIFA) specifically designed for telemedicine and healthcare applications, featuring compact size, biocompatible safety, and high integration suitability. By replacing the conventional top metal patch of a Planar Inverted-F Antenna (PIFA) with a slot spiral radiator whose geometry is precisely matched to the ground plane, the proposed antenna achieves a significant size reduction, making it ideal for encapsulation in miniaturized medical devices—a critical requirement for implantation scenarios. Tailored for the ISM 915 MHz band, the antenna is fabricated with a four-turn slot spiral etched on a 30 mm-diameter dielectric substrate, achieving an overall height of 22 mm and an electrically small profile of approximately 0.09λ × 0.06λ (λ: free-space wavelength at the center frequency). Simulation and measurement results demonstrate a −16 dB impedance matching (S11 parameter) at the target frequency, accompanied by a narrow fractional bandwidth of 1% and stable right-hand circular polarization (RHCP). When implanted in a layered biological tissue model (skin, fat, muscle), the antenna exhibits a near-omni directional radiation pattern in the azimuthal plane, with a peak gain of 2.94 dBi and consistent performance across the target band. These characteristics highlight the SSPIFA’s potential for reliable wireless communication in implantable medical systems, balancing miniaturization, radiation efficiency, and biocompatible design. This paper put forward a hybrid energy harvester for collecting RF and solar energy in quad-band (GSM-900/1800, ISM-2400 and WiMAX-3500). By introducing diverse parasitic structures, good impedance matching with unidirectional radiation is achieved in the multi-band. Below the solar antenna, a low-power rectifier circuit is employed to achieve broadband rectification. Under the input power of 0 dBm, and maximum RF-DC conversion efficiency of 56.94% is realized. Accordingly, the hybrid energy harvester collects RF and solar energy individually or simultaneously, and then converts it into DC for power supply. With a light intensity of 1500 lux, the solar cell obtains 1.732 mW, and the rectenna can harvest additional 0.37–0.405 mW power. The proposed RF–Solar energy harvester has the advantages of multi-frequency operation, high gain, and high energy harvesting conversion efficiency. Full article

Time synchronization between geographically separated equipment, such as, for example, that required in sensor networks for radio localization, is often based on global navigation satellite systems (GNSSs). However, in environments that are GNSS-denied due to signal blockage or interference, alternative timing synchronization methods are necessary. In this work, an experimental wireless time synchronization system based on long-range (LoRa) modulation has been developed and tested in the field. LoRa modulation operating in the license-free 2.4 GHz industrial, scientific and medical (ISM) band was chosen due to the potentially large coverage area of several kilometers and the availability of a ranging engine in the SX1280 transceiver by Semtech, which facilitates the implementation of time synchronization. The prototype system was tested over 170 m, where it achieved a time deviation (TDEV) of 30 ps for an average time of 1 s and a maximum TDEV of 3 ns over one day of measurement, improving over existing work on time synchronization with LoRa modulation by around three orders of magnitude. The field tests showed that ns accuracy can be achieved using LoRa modulation, making it suitable for the synchronization of remote sites, for example, for radio localization. Full article

The advent of CMOS power amplifiers has enabled compact and cost-effective solutions for RF applications. Among the available options, switching amplifiers are the most competitive due to their superior efficiency. In this paper, we present the design of a fully integrated 130 nm CMOS class-E RF power amplifier optimized for 2.4 GHz ISM band operations that is compliant with the Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE) standard. The amplifier is based on a cascode configuration with charging acceleration capacitance and a combination of standard and high-voltage (HV) MOSFETs, ensuring optimal performance while maintaining device reliability. To identify the best configuration for the proposed circuit, we first provide an overview of basic class-E amplifier operations and critically review optimization techniques proposed in the scientific literature. This review is complemented by a numerical analysis of the potential advantages of using a combined standard-HV MOSFET structure. Post-layout simulations with parasitic parameter extraction demonstrated that the amplifier achieves 40.85% Power Added Efficiency and 20.52 dBm output power. Full article

The Active Radar Interferometer (AcRaIn) represents a novel approach in secondary radar technology, aimed at environments with high reflective clutter, such as pipes and tunnels. This study introduces a compact design minimizing peripheral components and leveraging commercial semiconductor technologies operating in the 24 GHz ISM band. A heterodyne principle was adopted to enhance unambiguity and phase coherence without requiring synchronization or separate communication channels. Experimental validation involved free-space and pipe measurements, demonstrating functionality over distances up to 150 m. The radar system effectively reduced interference and achieved high precision in both straight and bent pipe scenarios, with deviations below 1.25% compared to manual measurements. By processing signals at intermediate frequencies, advantages such as improved efficiency, isolation, and system flexibility were achieved. Notably, the integration of amplitude modulation suppressed passive clutter, enabling clearer signal differentiation. Key challenges identified include optimizing signal processing and addressing logarithmic signal attenuation for better precision. These findings underscore AcRaIn’s potential for pipeline monitoring and similar applications. Full article
