Energy harvesting in the automotive sector is a rapidly growing field aimed at improving vehicle efficiency and sustainability by recovering wasted energy. Various technologies have been developed to convert mechanical, thermal, and environmental energy into electrical power, reducing dependency on traditional energy sources. This manuscript provides a comprehensive review of energy harvesting applications/methodologies, aiming to trace the research lines and future developments. This work identifies the main categories of harvesting solutions, namely mechanical, thermal, and hybrid/environmental solar–wind systems; each section includes a detailed review of the technical and scientific state of the art and a comparative analysis with detailed tables, allowing the state of the art to be mapped for identification of the strengths of each solution, as well as the challenges and future developments needed to enhance the technological level. These improvements focus on energy conversion efficiency, material innovation, vehicle integration, energy savings, and environmental sustainability. The mechanical harvesting section focuses on energy recovery from vehicle vibrations, with emphasis on regenerative suspensions and piezoelectric-based solutions. Specifically, solutions applied to suspensions with electric generators can achieve power outputs of around 1 kW, while piezoelectric-based suspension systems can generate up to tens of watts. The thermal harvesting section, instead, explores methods for converting waste heat from an internal combustion engine (ICE) into electrical power, including thermoelectric generators (TEGs) and organic Rankine cycle systems (ORC). Notably, ICEs with TEGs can recover above 1 kW of power, while ICE-based ORC systems can generate tens of watts. On the other hand, TEGs integrated into braking systems can harvest a few watts of power. Then, hybrid solutions are discussed, focusing on integrated mechanical and thermal energy recovery systems, as well as solar and wind energy harvesting. Hybrid solutions can achieve power outputs above 1 kW, with the main contribution from TEGs (≈1 kW), compared to piezoelectric systems (hundreds of W). Lastly, a section on commercial solutions highlights how current scientific research meets the automotive sector’s needs, providing significant insights for future development. For these reasons, the research results aim to be guidelines for a better understanding of where future studies should focus to improve the technological level and efficiency of energy harvesting solutions in the automotive sector. The transportation sector has a significant impact on climate change, as it is responsible for 20% of the global greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. This paper evaluates the role of electric vehicles (EVs) in achieving Europe’s ambitious target of carbon neutrality by 2050. The limitations of internal combustion engines (ICEs) along with the recent advancements, such as Euro 6 standards, are examined with a pseudo–lifecycle analysis (pseudo-LCA). While ICEs remain cost-effective initially, their higher long-term cost and environmental impact make them unsustainable. The benefits of EVs, including high energy efficiency, minimal maintenance, and reduced GHG emissions, are stated. However, challenges such as range limitations, charging infrastructure, and the environmental cost of battery production persist. Hybrid electric vehicles (HEVs) are highlighted as transitional technologies, offering improved thermal efficiency and reduced emissions, enhancing air quality in both urban and rural areas. The analysis extends to the use of alternative fuels, such as bioethanol, biodiesel, and hydrogen. These provide interim solutions but face scalability and sustainability issues. Policy interventions, including subsidies, tax incentives, and investments in renewable energy, are crucial factors for EV adoption. As EVs are pivotal to decarbonization, integrating renewable energy and addressing systemic challenges are essential for a sustainable transition. Full article

Thermally Induced Ion Magnetic Moment in H4O Superionic State

The hydrogen ions in superionic ice can move freely, playing the role of electrons in metals. Its electromagnetic behavior is the key to explaining the anomalous magnetic fields of Uranus and Neptune. Based on an ab initio evolutionary algorithm, we searched for the stable H4O crystal structure under pressures of 500–5000 GPa and discovered a new layered-chain Pmn21-H4O structure with H3 ion clusters. Interestingly, H3 ion clusters rotate above 900 K (with an instantaneous speed of 3000 m/s at 900 K), generating an instantaneous magnetic moment (~10−26 A·m2 ≈ 0.001 μB). Moreover, H ions diffuse in a direction perpendicular to the H-O atomic layer at 960–1000 K. This is because the hydrogen–oxygen covalent bonds within the hydrogen–oxygen plane hinder the diffusion behavior of H3 ion clusters within the plane, resulting in the diffusion of H3 ion clusters between the hydrogen–oxygen planes and the formation of a one-dimensional conductive superionic state. One-dimensional diffusion of ions may generate magnetic fields. We refer to these two types of magnetic moments as “thermally induced ion magnetic moments”. When the temperature exceeds 1000 K, H ions diffuse in three directions. When the temperature exceeds 6900 K, oxygen atoms diffuse and the system becomes fluid. These findings provide important references for people to re-recognize the physical and chemical properties of hydrogen and oxygen under high pressure, as well as the sources of abnormal magnetic fields in Uranus and Neptune. The article addresses the issue of numerical modeling of the process of forming the temperature regime of earth dams, along with their foundations, built and operated in permafrost conditions. A large number of such structures have been constructed in the permafrost regions of the Earth to meet the needs of industry and population. The paper outlines the key principles of designing and constructing such structures. These principles were developed based on years of experience in hydrotechnical construction. Failure to follow these principles leads to structural failures, as confirmed by the presented statistics on accidents. It is essential to ensure the appropriate thermal condition of the structure and its foundation, either frozen or thawed. An unplanned transition of soils from one state to another may lead to an emergency situation. Temperature changes can cause phase transitions of water from liquid to solid (ice), which also affects the formation of the structure’s regime. Numerical methods of calculation allow for the most comprehensive consideration of the influencing factors and processes. The article presents the results of numerical modeling of the filtration-temperature regime of an earth dam with a foundation in permafrost conditions, using two computational programs. The first is based on a locally variational approach (Termic, authored by the researchers), while the second uses a classical linear equation system solution (PLAXIS 2D 2022 software). A comparison of the results obtained from both programs showed good qualitative and quantitative consistency. Under the influence of seepage flow, the zone of frozen ground degradation is spreading in the lower part of the earth dam and its foundation. By September of the 27th year of operation, the thawed ground zone reaches approximately the middle of the structure at the base. The temperature values along the screen axis at the base of the structure are +1.2 °C (according to the Termic program—ver. 1.1) and +1.06 °C (according to PLAXIS 2D PC). Recommendations and future research directions on this topic are also formulated. Full article

An ice slurry or an emulsion of a phase change material (PCM) is a multiphase working fluid from the so-called Latent Functional Thermal Fluid (LFTF) group. LFTF is a fluid that uses, in addition to specific heat, the specific enthalpy of the phase change of its components to transfer heat. Another fluid type has joined the LFTF group: a slurry of encapsulated phase change material (PCM). Technological progress has made it possible for the phase change material to be enclosed in a capsule of the size of the order of micrometers (microencapsulated PCM—mPCM) or nanometers (nanoencapsulated PCM—nPCM). This paper describes a method for determining the Reynolds number (Re) at which the nature of the flow of the mPCM slurry inside a straight pipe changes. In addition, the study results of the effect of the concentration of mPCM in the slurry and the state of the PCM inside the microcapsule on the value of the critical Reynolds number (Recr) are presented. The aqueous slurry of mPCM with a concentration from 4.30% to 17.20% wt. flowed through a channel with an internal diameter of d = 4 mm with a flow rate of up to 110 kg/h (Re = 11,250). The main peak melting temperature of the microencapsulated paraffin wax used in the experiments was around 24 °C. The slurry temperature during the tests was maintained at a constant level. It was 7 °C, 24 °C and 44 °C (the PCM in the microcapsule was, respectively, a solid, underwent a phase change and was a liquid). The experimental studies clearly show that the concentration of microcapsules in the slurry and the state of the PCM in the microcapsule affect the critical Reynolds number. The higher the concentration of microcapsules in the slurry, the more difficult it was to maintain laminar fluid flow inside the channel. Furthermore, the laminar flow of the slurry terminated at a lower critical Reynolds number when the PCM in the microcapsule was solid. Caution is advised when choosing the relationship to calculate the flow resistance or heat transfer coefficients, because assuming that the flow motion changes at Re = 2300, as in the case of pure liquids, may be an incorrect assumption. Background: Olmesartan medoxomil (OLM) is the prodrug of olmesartan, an angiotensin II type 1 receptor blocker that has antihypertensive and antioxidant activities and renal protective properties. It exhibits low water solubility, which leads to poor bioavailability and limits its clinical potential. To improve the solubility of OLM, a host–guest inclusion complex (IC) between heptakis(2,6-di-O-methyl)-β-cyclodextrin (DMβCD) and the drug substance was obtained. Along with active substances, excipients play a crucial role in the quality, safety, and efficacy of pharmaceutical formulations. Therefore, the compatibility of OLM/DMβCD IC with several pharmaceutical excipients was evaluated. Methods: IC was characterized in both solid and liquid states, employing thermoanalytical techniques, universal-attenuated total reflectance Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy, powder X-ray diffractometry, UV spectroscopy, and saturation solubility studies. Compatibility studies were carried out using thermal and spectroscopic methods to assess potential physical and chemical interactions. Results: The 1:1 OLM:DMβCD stoichiometry ratio and the value of the apparent stability constant were determined by means of the phase solubility method that revealed an AL-type diagram. The binary system showed different physicochemical characteristics from those of the parent entities, supporting IC formation. The geometry of the IC was thoroughly investigated using molecular modeling. Compatibility studies revealed a lack of interaction between the IC and all studied excipients at ambient conditions and the thermally induced incompatibility of IC with magnesium stearate and α-lactose monohydrate. Conclusions: The results of this study emphasize that OLM/DMβCD IC stands out as a valuable candidate for future research in the development of new pharmaceutical formulations, in which precautions should be considered in choosing magnesium stearate and α-lactose monohydrate as excipients if the manufacture stage requires temperatures above 100 °C. Background/Objectives: Doxorubicin (Dox) is an anticancer drug used in the treatment of a wide range of solid tumors; however, Dox causes systemic toxicity and irreversible cardiotoxicity. The design of a new nanosystem that allows for the control of Dox loading and delivery results is a powerful tool to control Dox release only in cancer cells. For this reason, supramolecular self-assembly was performed between a poly(amidoamine) (PAMAM) dendrimer decorated with four β-cyclodextrin (βCD) units (PAMAM-βCD) and an adamantane–hydrazone–doxorubicin (Ad-h-Dox) prodrug. Methods: The formation of inclusion complexes (ICs) between the prodrug and all the βCD cavities present on the surface of the PAMAM-βCD dendrimer was followed by 1H-NMR titration and corroborated by 2D NOESY experiments. A full characterization of the supramolecular assembly was performed in the solid state by thermal analysis (DSC/TGA) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and in solution by the DOSY NMR technique in D2O. Furthermore, the Dox release profiles from the PAMAM-βCD/Ad-h-Dox assembly at different pH values was studied by comparing the efficiency against a native βCD/Ad-h-Dox IC. Additionally, in vitro cytotoxic activity assays were performed for the nanocarrier alone and the two supramolecular assemblies in different carcinogenic cell lines. Results: The PAMAM-βCD/Ad-h-Dox assembly was adequately characterized, and the cytotoxic activity results demonstrate that the nanocarrier alone and its hydrolysis product are innocuous compared to the PAMAM-βCD/Ad-h-Dox nanocarrier that showed cytotoxicity equivalent to free Dox in the tested cancer cell lines. The in vitro drug release assays for the PAMAM-βCD/Ad-h-Dox system showed an acidic pH-dependent behavior and a prolonged profile of up to more than 72 h. Conclusions: The design of PAMAM-βCD/Ad-h-Dox consists of a new controlled and prolonged Dox release system for potential use in cancer treatment. Full article

To protect the environment and reduce dependence on fossil fuels, the world is shifting towards electric vehicles (EVs) as a sustainable solution. The development of fast charging technologies for EVs to reduce charging time and increase operating range is essential to replace traditional internal combustion engine (ICE) vehicles. Lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) are efficient energy storage systems in EVs. However, the efficiency of LIBs depends significantly on their working temperature range. However, the huge amount of heat generated during fast charging increases battery temperature uncontrollably and may lead to thermal runaway, which poses serious hazards during the operation of EVs. In addition, fast charging with high current accelerates battery aging and seriously reduces battery capacity. Therefore, an effective and advanced battery thermal management system (BTMS) is essential to ensure the performance, lifetime, and safety of LIBs, particularly under extreme charging conditions. In this perspective, the current review presents the state-of-the-art thermal management strategies for LIBs during fast charging. The serious thermal problems owing to heat generated during fast charging and its impacts on LIBs are discussed. The core part of this review presents advanced cooling strategies such as indirect liquid cooling, immersion cooling, and hybrid cooling for the thermal management of batteries during fast charging based on recently published research studies in the period of 2019–2024 (5 years). Finally, the key findings and potential directions for next-generation BTMSs toward fast charging are proposed. This review offers an in-depth analysis by providing recommendations and potential solutions to develop reliable and efficient BTMSs for LIBs during fast charging. Full article

Modelling and controlling an electrical Power Generation System (PGS), which consists of an Internal Combustion Engine (ICE) linked to an electric generator, poses a significant challenge due to various factors. These include the non-linear characteristics of the system’s components, thermal effects, mechanical vibrations, electrical noise, and the dynamic and transient impacts of electrical loads. In this study, we introduce a fuzzy modelling identification approach utilizing the Takagi–Sugeno (T–S) structure, wherein model and control parameters are optimized. This methodology circumvents the need for deriving a mathematical model through energy balance considerations involving thermodynamics and the non-linear representation of the electric generator. Initially, a non-linear mathematical model for the electrical power system is obtained through the fuzzy c-means algorithm, which handles both premises and consequents in state space, utilizing input–output experimental data. Subsequently, the Particle Swarm Algorithm (PSO) is employed for optimizing the fuzzy parameter m of the c-means algorithm during the modelling phase. Additionally, in the design of the Parallel Distributed Compensation Controller (PDC), the optimization of parameters pertaining to the poles of the closed-loop response is conducted also by using the PSO method. Ultimately, numerical simulations are conducted, adjusting the power consumption of an inductive load. Full article

African scientific research faces formidable challenges, particularly with limited access to state-of-the-art measurement instruments. The high cost associated with these devices presents a significant barrier for regional research laboratories, impeding their ability to conduct sophisticated experiments and gather precise data. This predicament not only hampers the individual laboratories but also has broader implications for the African scientific community and the advancement of knowledge in developing nations—the financial cost barrier considerably impacts the research quality of these laboratories. Reflection on technical and economical solutions needs to be quickly found to help these countries advance their research. In civil engineering, the thermal conductivity property is the most important measurement for characterizing heat transfer in construction materials. Existing devices (i.e., conductometers) in a laboratory are expensive (approximately EUR 30,000) and unavailable for some African laboratories. This study proposes a new and affordable device to evaluate thermal conductivity in construction materials. The method involves establishing a thermal flux between a heat source (from the Joule effect provided by steel wool where a current is circulating) and a cold source (generated by ice cubes) under steady-state conditions. The development of the cylindrical prototype is based on the comparative flux-meter method outlined in the measuring protocol of the ASTM E1225 standard document. Experiments were conducted on four distinct materials (polystyrene, wood, agglomerated wood, and rigid foam). The results indicate a correct correlation between the experimental values obtained from the newly developed prototype and the reference values found in the literature. For example, concerning the experimental polystyrene study, the detailed case analysis reveals a good correlation, with a deviation of only 4.88%. The percent error found falls within the acceptable range indicated by the standard recommendations of the ASTM E1225 standard, i.e., within 5% acceptable error. Full article

By leveraging the Variational Quantum Eigensolver (VQE), the “quantum equation of motion” (qEOM) method established itself as a promising tool for quantum chemistry on near-term quantum computers and has been used extensively to estimate molecular excited states. Here, we explore a novel application of this method, employing it to compute thermal averages of quantum systems, specifically molecules like ethylene and butadiene. A drawback of qEOM is that it requires measuring the expectation values of a large number of observables on the ground state of the system, and the number of necessary measurements can become a bottleneck of the method. In this work, we focus on measurements through informationally complete positive operator-valued measures (IC-POVMs) to achieve a reduction in the measurement overheads by estimating different observables of interest through the measurement of a single set of POVMs. We show with numerical simulations that the qEOM combined with IC-POVM measurements ensures satisfactory accuracy in the reconstruction of the thermal state with a reasonable number of shots. The Earth has cooled since the early Pliocene, which was punctuated by accelerated cooling indicative of thresholds. I posit that the cooling was initiated when the Neogene uplift of the Tibetan highland caused it to ice over, augmenting the albedo. I formulate a minimal warm/cold/Arctic box model to test this hypothesis and prognose the Pliocene climate. In particular, based on model physics, I discern three thermal thresholds as Pliocene cools: (1) when the Arctic temperature falls below the marking temperature of the ice front, the East Greenland ice sheet would descend to the sea level and calve into the Nordic Seas; (2) when the Arctic temperature cools to the freezing point, the ice sheet would form and expand over circum-Arctic lowlands to cause a massive deposition of ice-rafted debris marking Northern Hemisphere glaciation (NHG); (3) when glacial state persists through low eccentricity, it would cause a transition from obliquity- to eccentricity-dominated glacial cycles. Aligning these thresholds with the observed ones around 3.5, 2.7, and 1 million years ago, the model produces a temporal evolution of the Pliocene temperature as well as its driving albedo change. Since the latter can be accommodated by the observed one, it supports the Neogene uplift as the tectonic origin of NHG. Full article

The automotive industry faces development challenges due to emerging technologies, regulatory demands, societal trends, and evolving customer mobility needs. These factors contribute to a wide range of vehicle variants and increasingly complex powertrains. The layout of a vehicle is usually based on standardized driving cycles such as WLTC, gradeability, acceleration test cases, and many more. In real-world driving cycles, however, this can lead to limitations under certain boundary conditions. To ensure that all customer requirements are met, vehicle testing is conducted under extreme environmental conditions, e.g., in Sweden or Spain. One way to reduce the development time while ensuring high product quality and cost-effectiveness is to use model-based methods for the comprehensive design of powertrains. This study presents a layout methodology using a top-down approach. Initially, powertrain-relevant requirements for an exemplary target customer are translated into a specification sheet with specific test cases. An overall vehicle model with detailed thermal sub-models is developed to evaluate the different requirements. A baseline design for a C-segment plug-in hybrid vehicle was developed as part of the FVV research project HyFlex-ICE using standardized test cases, highlighting the influence of customer profiles on the design outcome through varying weighting factors. The target customer’s design is analyzed in four real driving scenarios, considering variations in parameters such as the ambient temperature, traffic, driver type, trailer pulling, and battery state-of-charge, to assess their influence on the target variables. In the next step, the potential of hardware technologies and predictive driving functions is examined in selected driving scenarios based on the identified constraints of the baseline design. As a result, four application-specific technology packages (Cost neutral, Cold country, Hot country, and Premium) for different customer requirements and sales markets are defined, which, finally, demonstrates the applicability of the holistic methodology. The application of green energy resources is gaining increasing attention in the field of engineering. In cold areas, the groundwater circulation temperature control system (GCTCS) can serve as an auxiliary structure to the bridge deck on highways, effectively preventing the pavement surface from freezing. In this study, a finite element simulation is conducted to establish a bridge structure model of the GCTCS, incorporating both steady-state and transient conditions to investigate its anti-icing performance. Additionally, the influences of various factors, such as wind speed, asphalt concrete layer thickness, groundwater temperature, pipe water flow rate, and pipe spacing, on the temperature of the water film on the pavement surface are investigated and validated through laboratory testing. The results demonstrate that wind speed has a significant influence, with the convective heat loss reaching 90% when the wind speed reaches 10 m/s. Groundwater temperature is the second most influential factor, showing a linear relationship with the water film temperature. Excessive pipe spacing can lead to an uneven temperature distribution on the pavement surface. The thickness of the asphalt concrete layer and the flow rate have minimal effects. However, a low flow rate can result in a significant decrease in the water film temperature. Furthermore, changes in the thermal conductivity of the surface layers also contribute to the anti-icing effect. The simulation analysis of the GCTCS provides valuable guidance for practical engineering in cooler regions where groundwater resources are abundant. Full article

The energy management system (EMS) of a hybrid electric vehicle (HEV) is an algorithm that determines the power split between the electrical and thermal paths. It defines the operating state of the power sources, i.e., the electric motor (EM) and the internal combustion engine (ICE). It is therefore one of the main factors that can significantly influence the fuel consumption and performance of hybrid vehicles. In the transmission path, the power generated by the ICE is in part employed to accelerate the rotating components of the powertrain, such as the crankshaft, flywheel, gears, and shafts. The main inertial components are the crankshaft and the flywheel. This additional power is significant during high-intensity acceleration. Therefore, the actual engine operation is different from that required by the power split unit. This study focuses on exploring the influence of engine inertia on HEV fuel consumption by developing a controller based on an equivalent consumption minimisation strategy (ECMS) that considers crankshaft and flywheel inertia. The optimal solution obtained by the ECMS controller is refined by incorporating the inertia effect of the main rotating components of the engine into the cost function. This reduces the engine operation during high inertial torque transient phases, resulting in a decrease in vehicle CO2 emissions by 2.34, 2.22, and 1.13 g/km for the UDDS, US06, and WLTC driving cycles, respectively.
