Grounding systems are critical for ensuring electrical safety, fault current dissipation, and electromagnetic compatibility in power installations across different voltage levels. This research presents a comparative study on the optimization of grounding configurations for 400 V, 10 kV, and 35 kV electrical installations, focusing on key performance parameters such as grounding resistance, step and touch voltages, and fault current dissipation efficiency. The study employs computational simulations using the finite element method (FEM) alongside empirical field measurements to evaluate the influence of soil resistivity, electrode materials, and grounding configurations, including rod electrodes, grids, deep-driven rods, and hybrid grounding systems. Results indicate that soil resistivity significantly affects grounding efficiency, with deep-driven rods providing superior performance in high-resistivity conditions, while grounding grids demonstrate enhanced fault current dissipation in substations. The integration of conductive backfill materials, such as bentonite and conductive concrete, further reduces grounding resistance and enhances system reliability. This study provides engineering insights into optimizing grounding systems based on installation voltage levels, cost considerations, and compliance with IEEE Std 80-2013 and IEC 60364-5-54. The findings contribute to the development of more resilient and cost-effective grounding strategies for electrical installations. Full article

Inter-turn short-circuit (ITSC) faults in permanent magnet synchronous machines (PMSMs) present a significant reliability challenge in electric vehicle (EV) drivetrains, particularly under non-stationary operating conditions characterized by inverter-driven transients, variable loads, and magnetic saturation. Existing diagnostic approaches, including motor current signature analysis (MCSA) and wavelet-based methods, are primarily designed for steady-state conditions and rely on manual feature selection, limiting their applicability in real-time embedded systems. Furthermore, the lack of publicly available, high-fidelity datasets capturing the transient dynamics and nonlinear flux-linkage behaviors of PMSMs under fault conditions poses an additional barrier to developing data-driven diagnostic solutions. To address these challenges, this study introduces a simulation framework that generates a comprehensive dataset using finite element method (FEM) models, incorporating magnetic saturation effects and inverter-driven transients across diverse EV operating scenarios. Time-frequency features extracted via Discrete Wavelet Transform (DWT) from stator current signals are used to train a Transformer model for automated ITSC fault detection. The Transformer model, leveraging self-attention mechanisms, captures both local transient patterns and long-range dependencies within the time-frequency feature space. This architecture operates without sequential processing, in contrast to recurrent models such as LSTM or RNN models, enabling efficient inference with a relatively low parameter count, which is advantageous for embedded applications. The proposed model achieves 97% validation accuracy on simulated data, demonstrating its potential for real-time PMSM fault detection. Additionally, the provided dataset and methodology contribute to the facilitation of reproducible research in ITSC diagnostics under realistic EV operating conditions. Full article

To study the dynamic characteristics of the fluid-filled ship piping system with flanges and to optimize the design, and based on the transfer matrix methods (TMMs), this paper proposes two modeling methods for flat-welded flanges and weld-neck flanges. Method 1 employs a lumped mass equivalent flange. Method 2, based on the finite element and analogy ideas, equates the flange to pipe sections with a larger wall thickness. By comparing with the finite element method (FEM) results, it is found that for both flat-weld flanges and weld-neck flanges, the accuracy of Method 2 proposed in this paper is superior to that of Method 1. Meanwhile, experimental verification is carried out, and the experimental results are generally consistent with those obtained using Method 2. Furthermore, the multi-objective particle swarm optimization (MOPSO) algorithm is further introduced for the dynamic design of a branch pipeline system. The goal is to avoid resonance by adjusting the natural frequency of the system. Through the comparison of the FEM results, it has been confirmed that this optimization method is both efficient and accurate in optimizing the natural frequency. The method proposed in this paper has a specific reference value for engineering practice. Full article

Nitrogen vacancy (NV) diamonds are promising room temperature quantum sensors. As the technology moves towards application, efficient use of energy and cost become critical for miniaturization. This work focuses on microwave-based spin control using the short-circuited end of a slot line, analyzed by finite element method (FEM) for magnetic field amplitude and uniformity. A microstrip-to-slot-line converter with a 10 dB bandwidth of 3.2 GHz was implemented. Rabi oscillation measurements with an NV microdiamond on a glass fiber show uniform excitation over 1.5 MHz across the slot, allowing spin manipulation within the coherence time of the NV center. The equivalent source method (ESM) is a core algorithm in integrated radiation-propagation acoustic field modeling. However, in challenging marine environments, including deep-sea and polar regions, where sound speed profiles exhibit strong vertical gradients, the ESM must increase waveguide stratification to maintain accuracy. This causes computational costs to scale exponentially with the number of layers, compromising efficiency and limiting applicability. To address this, this paper proposes a modal equivalent source (MES) model employing normal modes as basis functions instead of free-field Green’s functions. This model constructs a set of normal mode bases using full-depth hydroacoustic parameters, incorporating water column characteristics into the basis functions to eliminate waveguide stratification. This significantly reduces the computational matrix size of the ESM and computes acoustic fields in range-dependent waveguides using a single set of normal modes, resolving the dual limitations of inadequate precision and low efficiency in such environments. Concurrently, for the construction of basis functions, this paper also proposes a fast computation method for eigenvalues and eigenmodes in waveguide contexts based on phase functions and difference equations. Furthermore, coupling the MES method with the Finite Element Method (FEM) enables integrated computation of underwater target radiation and propagation fields. Multiple simulations demonstrate close agreement between the proposed model and reference results (errors < 4 dB). Under equivalent accuracy requirements, the proposed model reduces computation time to less than 1/25 of traditional ESM, achieving significant efficiency gains. Additionally, sea trial verification confirms model effectiveness, with mean correlation coefficients exceeding 0.9 and mean errors below 5 dB against experimental data. Full article

Effective real-time control systems require fast and accurate models. The roll bending models presented in this paper are proposed for a real-time control system for the design of the rolling schedule. The roll bending, with other factors, defines the shape of the roll surface, its convexity, and finally the shape of the final product of the flat rolling, its convexity, and its flatness. This paper presents accurate finite element (FE) models for a four-high mill. The models serve to obtain accurate solutions to the problem of roll bending, taking into account the rolling force, width of the rolling sheet (strip), initial shape of the roll surface, and the anti-bending force. The results of the FE simulation are used to train three models developed on the basis of the neural network (NN) for the solution of one direct and two inverse tasks. The pre-trained NN model gives accurate results and is faster than the FE model (FEM). The calculation time on a personal computer for one case of 3D FEM is 1 to 2 min, for 2D FEM it is 1 s, and for NN it is less than 1 ms. The results can be immediately used by other models of the real-time control system. A novelty of the research presented in the paper is the creation of complex applications of the FE method and an NN as a reduced-order model (ROM) for prediction of roll bending and calculation of sheet (strip) convexity, rolling, and anti-bending forces to obtain the required convexity. The ratchet click mechanism in mechanical watch movements is a micro-component essential to prevent the unwinding of the caliber mainspring, providing secure energy storage during recharging. Despite its geometrical simplicity, the ratchet click undergoes to a complex distribution of stress, elevated strains, and cyclical mechanical deformations, affecting its long-term reliability. Despite being a crucial element in all mechanical watch movements, the non-return system appears to have been overlooked in scientific literature, with no studies available on its design, modeling, and micromachining. In this work, we introduce a novel Finite Element Method (FEM) -based design strategy for the ratchet click, systematically refining its geometry and dimensional parameters to minimize peak stress and improve durability. A mechanical simulation model was created to simulate the boundary conditions, contact interactions, and stress distributions on the part. If compared with the standard component, the optimized design exhibits a decrease in peak stress values. The mechanism was micro-machined, and it was experimentally tested to validate the numerical model outputs. The integrated digital–physical approach not only underscores the scientific contribution of coupling advanced simulation with experimental validation of complex micromechanisms but also provides a generalizable method for enhancing performance of micro-mechanical components while preserving their historical design heritage. As the development of offshore wind energy transforms from coastal to deep-sea regions, designing a cost effective mooring system while ensuring the safety of floating offshore wind turbine (FOWT) remains a critical challenge, especially considering extreme wave environments. This study employs a model coupling computational fluid dynamics (CFD) and finite element method (FEM) to investigate the responses of a parked FOWT platform with its mooring system under rogue wave conditions. Specifically, the mooring dynamics are solved using a local discontinuous Galerkin (LDG) method, which is believed to provide high accuracy. Firstly, rogue wave generation and the coupled CFD-FEM are validated through comparisons with existing experimental and numerical data. Secondly, FOWT platform motions and mooring tensions caused by a rogue wave are obtained through simulations, which are compared with the ones caused by a similar peak-clipped rogue wave. Lastly, analysis of four different mooring design schemes is conducted to evaluate their performance on reducing the mooring tensions. The results indicate that the rogue wave leads to significantly enlarged FOWT platform motions and mooring tensions, while doubling the number of mooring lines with specific line angles provides the most balanced performance considering cost-effectiveness and structural safety under identical rogue wave conditions. High-gradient magnetic separation (HGMS) is a conventional and effective method for processing weak magnetic materials. A multi-field dynamic coupling simulation method integrating the Finite Element Method (FEM), Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD), and the Discrete Element Method (DEM) was employed to investigate the separation behavior in HGMS. The dynamic deposition process of magnetic particles under the interactions of magnetic fields, fluid flow fields, and particle–particle forces was simulated using a two-way fluid–solid coupling algorithm based on the FEM-CFD-DEM coupling approach. Experimental results demonstrated that the particle deposition profiles predicted by the double-wire medium model were in good agreement with the measured data. The research findings indicated that the separation process could be divided into three distinct stages—the adsorption stage, the closure stage, and the clogging stage—each characterized by unique dynamic behaviors and pressure-drop evolution patterns. Additionally, the effects of key parameters such as the feeding velocity and medium filling ratio on the separation process were analyzed, providing theoretical foundations and technical support for the optimization of HGMS processes and the enhancement of separation efficiency. Research on helicopter stability is essential for the design of flotation systems and serves as a primary basis for evaluating wind and wave resistance. The drainage volume method and fluid–solid coupling method are commonly used for calculating floating characteristics. However, the drainage volume method ignores the flexibility of airbags and their interaction with the helicopter, while the fluid–solid coupling method is computationally intensive. In contrast, the analysis of a helicopter’s hydrostatic floating characteristics is a static problem. It suffices to obtain relevant results when the helicopter reaches a stationary state, without the need to accurately simulate the dynamic process of achieving that state. Therefore, this paper proposes an equivalent calculation method, in which the hydrostatic effect of water on the helicopter is represented by the hydrostatic pressure applied across the entire flotation system. The finite element method (FEM) is then employed to determine the final static state, and the results are compared with those from the drainage volume method and available experimental data to validate the reliability of the proposed approach. To elucidate the influence mechanism of airbags and flexible connecting straps on the lateral static stability of helicopters, this paper analyzes airbag positions at various heeling angles and examines the impact of different internal airbag pressures. The results indicate that the main factor affecting lateral static stability is the displacement of the airbags. This displacement causes variations in the airbag’s buoyancy and center of buoyancy, thereby reducing the lateral heeling moment. Full article

The accordion honeycomb has unique deformation characteristics in cellular materials. This study develops a three-dimensional equivalent Cauchy continuum model (3D-ECM) based on the variational asymptotic method (VAM) to efficiently predict the mechanical response of the accordion honeycomb. The accuracy of the 3D-ECM is validated via quasi-static compression experiments on 3D-printed specimens and detailed 3D finite element simulations (3D-FEM), showing a strong correlation between simulation and experimental data. Parametric analyses reveal that the re-entrant angle, ligament-to-strut length ratio, and thickness ratios significantly affect the equivalent elastic moduli, providing insights into geometric optimization strategies for targeted mechanical performance. Comparative experiments among honeycomb structures with positive, negative, and zero Poisson’s ratios show that the accordion honeycomb achieves superior dimensional stability and tunable stiffness but exhibits lower energy-absorption efficiency due to discontinuous buckling and recovery processes. Further comparison among different ZPR honeycombs confirms that the accordion design offers the highest equivalent modulus in the re-entrant direction. The findings underscore the accordion honeycomb’s promise in scenarios demanding structural reliability, tunable stiffness, and moderate energy absorption. Full article

The design of steel connections presents considerable complexity due to their inherently nonlinear behavior, cost constraints, and the necessity to comply with structural design codes. These factors highlight the need for advanced computational algorithms to identify optimal solutions. In this study, a comprehensive computational framework is presented in which the finite element method (FEM) is integrated with a genetic algorithm (GA) to optimize material usage in bolted steel end-plate joints, while structural safety is ensured based on multiple performance criteria. By incorporating both material and geometric nonlinearities, the mechanical response of the connections is accurately captured. The proposed approach is applied to a representative beam-to-column assembly, with numerical results verified against experimental data. By employing the framework, an optimized layout is obtained, yielding a 10.4% improvement in the overall performance objective compared to the best-performing validated model and a 39.3% reduction in material volume relative to the most efficient feasible alternative. Furthermore, a 53.6% decrease in equivalent plastic strain is achieved compared to the configuration exhibiting the highest level of inelastic deformation. These findings demonstrate that the developed method is capable of enhancing design efficiency and precision, underscoring the potential of advanced computational tools in structural engineering applications. Aiming at the problems of low thermal analysis efficiency and high computational cost of traditional computational fluid dynamics (CFD) methods for modular fault-tolerant permanent magnet synchronous motors (MFT-PMSMs) under complex working conditions, this paper proposes a fast modeling and calculation method of motor temperature field based on a high-efficiency and high-precision network algorithm. In this method, the physical structure of the motor is equivalent to a parameterized network model, and the computational efficiency is significantly improved by model partitioning and Fourth-order Runge Kutta method. The temperature change of the cooling medium is further considered, and the temperature rise change of the motor at different spatial positions is effectively considered. Based on the finite element method (FEM), the space loss distribution under rated, single-phase open circuit and overload conditions is obtained and mapped to the thermal network nodes. Through the transient thermal network solution, the rapid calculation of the temperature rise law of key components such as windings and permanent magnets is realized. The accuracy of the thermal network model was verified by using fluid-structure coupling simulation and prototype test for temperature analysis. This method provides an efficient tool for thermal safety assessment and optimization in the motor fault-tolerant design stage, especially for heat capacity check under extreme conditions and fault modes. Infrared-Guided Thermal Cycles in FEM Simulation of Laser Welding of Thin Aluminium Alloy Sheets

Climate concerns are driving the automotive industry to adopt advanced manufacturing technologies that aim to improve energy efficiency and reduce vehicle weight. In this context, lightweight structural materials such as aluminium alloys have gained significant attention due to their favorable strength-to-weight ratio. Laser welding plays a crucial role in assembling such materials, offering high flexibility and fast joining capabilities for thin aluminium sheets. However, welding these materials presents specific challenges, particularly in controlling heat input to minimize distortions and ensure consistent weld quality. As a result, numerical simulations based on the Finite Element Method (FEM) are essential for predicting weld-induced phenomena and optimizing process performance. This study investigates welding-induced distortions in laser butt welding of 1.5 mm-thick Al 6061 samples through FEM simulations performed in the SYSWELD 2024.0 environment. The methodology provided by the software is based on the Moving Heat Source (MHS) model, which simulates the physical movement of the heat source and typically requires extensive calibration through destructive metallographic testing. This transient approach enables the detailed prediction of thermal, metallurgical, and mechanical behavior, but it is computationally demanding. To improve efficiency, the Imposed Thermal Cycle (ITC) model is often used. In this technique, a thermal cycle, extracted from an MHS simulation or experimental data, is imposed on predefined subregions of the model, allowing only mechanical behavior to be simulated while reducing computation time. To avoid MHS-based calibration, this work proposes using thermal cycles acquired in-line during welding via infrared thermography as direct input for the ITC model. The method was validated experimentally and numerically, showing good agreement in the prediction of distortions and a significant reduction in workflow time. The distortion values from simulations differ from the real experiment by less than 0.3%. Our method exhibits a slight decrease in performance, resulting in an increase in estimation error of 0.03% compared to classic approaches, but more than 85% saving in computation time. The integration of real process data into the simulation enables a virtual representation of the process, supporting future developments toward Digital Twin applications. Full article

Multi-Objective Optimization of IME-Based Acoustic Tweezers for Mitigating Node Displacements

Acoustic tweezers, as advanced micro/nano manipulation tools, play a pivotal role in biomedical engineering, microfluidics, and precision manufacturing. However, piezoelectric-based acoustic tweezers face performance limitations due to multi-physical coupling effects during microfabrication. This study proposes a novel approach using injection molding with embedded electronics (IMEs) technology to fabricate piezoelectric micro-ultrasonic transducers with micron-scale precision, addressing the critical issue of acoustic node displacement caused by thermal–mechanical coupling in injection molding—a problem that impairs wave transmission efficiency and operational stability. To optimize the IME process parameters, a hybrid multi-objective optimization framework integrating NSGA-II and MOPSO is developed, aiming to simultaneously minimize acoustic node displacement, volumetric shrinkage, and residual stress distribution. Key process variables—packing pressure (80–120 MPa), melt temperature (230–280 °C), and packing time (15–30 s)—are analyzed via finite element modeling (FEM) and validated through in situ tie bar elongation measurements. The results show a 27.3% reduction in node displacement amplitude and a 19.6% improvement in wave transmission uniformity compared to conventional methods. This methodology enhances acoustic tweezers’ operational stability and provides a generalizable framework for multi-physics optimization in MEMS manufacturing, laying a foundation for next-generation applications in single-cell manipulation, lab-on-a-chip systems, and nanomaterial assembly.
