Background and Aim: Artificial intelligence (AI) is among the most promising innovations for transforming nursing education, making it more interactive, personalized, and competency-based. However, its integration also raises significant ethical and practical concerns. This scoping review aims to analyze and summarize key studies on the application of AI in university-level nursing education, focusing on its benefits, challenges, and future prospects. Methods: A scoping review was conducted using the Population, Concept, and Context (PCC) framework, targeting nursing students and educators in academic settings. A comprehensive search was carried out across the PubMed, Scopus, and Web of Science databases. Only peer-reviewed original studies published in English were included. Two researchers independently screened the studies, resolving any disagreements through team discussion. Data were synthesized narratively. Results: Of the 569 articles initially identified, 11 original studies met the inclusion criteria. The findings indicate that AI-based tools—such as virtual simulators and ChatGPT—can enhance students’ learning experiences, communication skills, and clinical preparedness. Nonetheless, several challenges were identified, including increased simulation-related anxiety, potential misuse, and ethical concerns related to data quality, privacy, and academic integrity. Conclusions: AI offers significant opportunities to enhance nursing education; however, its implementation must be approached with critical awareness and responsibility. It is essential that students develop both digital competencies and ethical sensitivity to fully leverage AI’s potential while ensuring high-quality education and responsible nursing practice. Ant venoms are rich sources of bioactive molecules, including peptide toxins with potent and selective activity on ion channels, which makes them valuable for pharmacological research and therapeutic development. Voltage-dependent potassium (Kv) channels, critical for regulating cellular excitability or cell cycle progression control, are targeted by a diverse array of venom-derived peptides. This study focuses on MYRTXA4-Tb11a, a peptide from Tetramorium bicarinatum venom, which was previously shown to have a strong paralytic effect on dipteran species without cytotoxicity on insect cells. In the present study, we show that Tb11a exhibited no or low cytotoxicity toward mammalian cells either, even at high concentrations, while electrophysiological studies revealed a blockade of hKv1.3 activity. Additionally, Ta11a, an analog of Tb11a from the ant Tetramorium africanum, demonstrated similar Kv1.3 inhibitory properties. Structural analysis supports that the peptide acts on Kv1.3 channels through the functional dyad Y21-K25 and that the disulfide bridge is essential for biological activity, as reduction seems to disrupt the peptide conformation and impair the dyad. These findings highlight the importance of three-dimensional structure in channel modulation and establish Tb11a and Ta11a as promising Kv1.3 inhibitors. Future research should investigate their selectivity across additional ion channels and employ structure-function studies to further enhance their pharmacological potential. Full article

The transfer of passive immunity (TPI) is vital for newborn calf health and is typically assessed through blood sampling to measure serum or plasma IgG or total protein levels. Saliva offers a less invasive alternative. This study evaluated the potential of saliva for assessing TPI. Saliva and serum samples were collected from 20 calves at birth and on days 1, 2, and 7 of life to measure IgG, IgA, IgM, and total protein concentrations. Colostrum fed to the calves was also analyzed for gross composition and immunoglobulin content. Colostrum intake and composition were associated with saliva IgG (R2 = 0.48; p = 0.019), saliva IgM (R2 = 0.73; p = 0.02), and saliva total protein (R2 = 0.41; p = 0.043). Serum IgG and IgA levels were predicted by saliva IgG (p < 0.001; R2 = 0.33) and IgA (p < 0.001; R2 = 0.13), respectively, though predictive accuracy varied by calf age (IgG: p < 0.001; R2 = 0.40; IgA: p < 0.001; R2 = 0.91). In conclusion, the results suggest that both saliva IgG and IgA concentrations could be used to predict IgG and IgA serum concentrations. Convective updrafts are one of the main characteristics of convective clouds, responsible for the convective mass flux and the redistribution of energy and condensate in the atmosphere. During the early stages of their lifecycle, convective clouds experience rapid cloud-top ascent manifested by a decrease in the geostationary IR brightness temperature (TBIR). Under the assumption that the convective cloud top behaves like a black body, the ascent rate of the convective cloud top can be estimated as (TBIRt), and it can be used to infer the near cloud-top convective updraft. The temporal resolution of the geostationary IR measurements and non-uniform beam-filling effects can influence the convective updraft estimation. However, the main shortcoming until today was the lack of independent verification of the strength of the convective updraft. Here, Doppler radar observations from the ESCAPE and TRACER field experiments provide independent estimates of the convective updraft velocity at higher spatiotemporal resolution throughout the convective core column and can be used to evaluate the updraft velocity estimates from the IR cooling rate for limited samples. Isolated convective cells were tracked with dedicated radar (RHIs and PPIs) scans throughout their lifecycle. Radial Doppler velocity measurements near the convective cloud top are used to provide estimates of convective updrafts. These data are compared with the geostationary IR and VIS channels (from the GOES satellite) to characterize the convection evolution and lifecycle based on cloud-top cooling rates. Full article

Antimicrobial resistance is an escalating global threat that undermines the efficacy of modern antibiotics and places a substantial economic burden on healthcare systems—costing Europe alone over EUR 11.7 billion each year due to rising medical expenses and productivity losses. While genomics and transcriptomics have significantly advanced our understanding of the genetic foundations of resistance, they often fail to capture the dynamic, real-time adaptations that enable bacterial survival. Proteomics, particularly mass spectrometry-based strategies, bridges this gap by uncovering the functional protein-level changes that drive resistance, persistence, and tolerance under antibiotic pressure. In this review, we examine how proteomic approaches provide new insights into resistance mechanisms across various antibiotic classes, with a particular focus on β-lactams, aminoglycosides, and fluoroquinolones, highlighting clinically relevant pathogens, especially members of the ESKAPE group. Finally, we examine future directions, including the integration of proteomics with other omic technologies and the growing role of artificial intelligence in resistance prediction, paving the way for more predictive, personalized, and effective solutions to combat antimicrobial resistance. Turbidity is a crucial parameter for assessing the ecological health of aquatic ecosystems, particularly in shallow tropical lakes that are subject to climatic variability and anthropogenic pressures. Lake Chapala, the largest freshwater body in Mexico, has experienced persistent turbidity and sediment influx since the 1970s, primarily due to upstream erosion and reduced water inflow. In this study, we utilized Landsat satellite imagery in conjunction with near-synchronous in situ reflectance measurements to monitor spatial and seasonal turbidity patterns between 2023 and 2025. The surface reflectance was radiometrically corrected and validated using spectroradiometer data collected across eight sampling sites in the eastern sector of the lake, the area where the highest rates of horizontal change in turbidity occur. Based on the relationship between near-infrared reflectance and field turbidity, second-order polynomial models were developed for spring, fall, and the composite annual model. The annual model demonstrated acceptable performance (R2 = 0.72), effectively capturing the spatial variability and temporal dynamics of the average annual turbidity for the whole lake. Historical turbidity data (2000–2018) and a particular case study in 2016 were used as a reference for statistical validation, confirming the model’s applicability under varying hydrological conditions. Our findings underscore the utility of empirical remote-sensing models, supported by field validation, for cost-effective and scalable turbidity monitoring in dynamic tropical lakes with limited monitoring infrastructure. Background/Objectives: Radicular pain is a frequent pathology, and disc herniation is the commonest aetiology. A meta-analysis summarising international guidelines for radicular pain, published in 2021, showed that lumbar traction’s place is still a topic of debate. In this study, our aim was to evaluate the effectiveness of lumbar tractions in treating radicular pain of discal origin in association with medical treatment versus medical treatment alone. We performed a randomised, controlled, interventional, prospective, superiority trial in Reims Hospital Rheumatology Unit. Methods: We included participants with radicular pain and concordant disc herniation with ambulatory treatment failure. Participants were randomised into two groups: medical group (analgesics, anti-inflammatories treatments, at least two epidural injections); tractions group with this medical treatment associated with lumbar tractions. The primary outcome was the difference in the proportion of participants experiencing a minimum of 25% improvement in radicular pain at one month follow-up between the two groups. Results: We included 424 participants: 211 in the tractions group and 213 in the medical group. We analysed 388 participants (194 in each group). We collected demographic and clinical data, lumbar and radicular Numeric Pain Scale at baseline, one and three months. A statistical difference was found for the primary outcome: 120/194 participants (62%) in tractions group and 98/194 participants (51%) in medical group (p = 0.024). Conclusions: To our knowledge, this is the first randomised and controlled study on this topic with these results. We can assert the superiority of lumbar tractions in association with medical treatment over medical treatment alone for radicular pain with concordant disc herniation. Full article

Background: It is estimated that in Italy, there were 364,000 new diagnoses of neoplasms each year and that the overall incidence of blood cancers was 10% of these. Leukemia and lymphomas represented the ninth and eighth places, respectively, among the causes of death from neoplasia. Hematopoietic stem cell transplantation represented an effective treatment option for many of these malignancies, and not only that: benign and congenital diseases could also be treated. Objective: To assess knowledge among the Apulian population regarding stem cell donation and factors that could influence this choice, focusing especially on the knowledge of the residents of Puglia, Italy on how stem cells were harvested and their functions, their reasons for joining the National Registry, and the reasons that hold them back from making such a choice. Study Design: An observational and cross-sectional study was conducted, through snowball sampling methodology, until data saturation. An online survey was conducted, which included several Italian associations. The questionnaire administered contained five main sections, such as sociodemographic data, knowledge of the existence of National Registries and their adherence, the nationwide presence of various associations that promote donation, knowledge with respect to the structure, use and functions of stem cells, sources of procurement, such as bone marrow, peripheral blood and umbilical cord, and related procedures, beliefs, attitudes, values, and opinions of the Italian population regarding the topic, and degree of information and education regarding bone marrow donation. Results: A total of 567 Apulian citizens were enrolled. Of these, 75.3% were female and 96.8% were aged between 18 and 65 years. Most of participants were single (46.9%) and married (47.3%) and had a diploma (44.4%), and less had a degree (35.8%). Significant differences were recorded between gender, singles, and married participants, and participants with a diploma or a degree and the items proposed. Conclusions: A true culture of donation in our region was not clearly spread. Although something has been accomplished in recent years in terms of deceased donor donation, still a great deal needs to be achieved for living donation, which encountered a great deal of resistance. It has been deemed necessary to seek winning solutions to this issue in terms of communication and information campaigns, raising awareness and empowering citizens to express consciously their concerns about organs and tissues and to stand in solidarity with those who suffered. Cytochalasins Suppress 3D Migration of ECM-Embedded Tumoroids at Non-Toxic Concentrations

Migrastatic strategies are considered as candidate therapeutic approaches to suppress cancer invasion into local surrounding tissues and metastatic spread. The F-actin cytoskeleton is responsible for key properties regulating (cancer) cell migration. The cortical F-actin network controls cell stiffness, which, in turn, determines cell migration strategies and efficiency. Moreover, the dynamic remodeling of F-actin networks mediating filopodia, lamellipodia, and F-actin stress fibers is crucial for cell migration. Here, we have used a conditional knockout approach to delete cofilin, an F-actin-binding protein that controls severing. We find that the deletion of cofilin prevents the migration of cancer cells from tumoroids into the surrounding extracellular matrix without affecting their viability. This identifies cofilin as a candidate target to suppress metastatic spread. Pharmacological inhibitors interfering with F-actin dynamics have been developed but their effects are pleiotropic, including severe toxicity, and their impact on 3D tumor cell migration has not been tested or separated from this toxicity. Using concentration ranges of a panel of inhibitors, we select cytochalasins based on the suppression of 2D migration at non-toxic concentrations. We then show that these attenuate the escape of tumor cells from tumoroids and their migration into the surrounding extracellular matrix without toxicity in 3D cultures. This effect is accompanied by suppression of cell stiffness at such non-toxic concentrations, as measured by acoustic force spectroscopy. These findings identify cytochalasins B and D as candidate migrastatic drugs to suppress metastatic spread. Full article

Background/Objectives: Congenital microcephaly is a clinical manifestation with a heterogeneous etiology, and its epidemiological surveillance relies on the systematic identification of cases and investigation of their underlying causes to inform preventive strategies and improve prognostic assessments. In Latin America, despite the existence of congenital anomaly reporting programs since 1967, the surveillance of microcephaly only gained substantial attention following the Zika virus (ZIKV) epidemic in 2015. Since then, efforts have predominantly concentrated on cases of infectious origin, often at the expense of recognizing endogenous etiologies, particularly those of genetic nature. This review aims to examine the role of genetic alterations in microcephaly pathogenesis and evaluates the limitations of current surveillance systems. Methods: A literature review centered on syndromic and non-syndromic genetic etiologies, alongside an analysis of Latin American surveillance frameworks (ECLAMC, RyVEMCE, ICBDSR, ReLAMC) was performed. Results: The findings reveal improved case detection and increased reported prevalence; however, the proportion of genetically attributed cases has remained stable. No systematic studies were found identifying the most common genetic causes; instead, genetic investigations were limited to isolated cases with a family history. Conclusions: While epidemiological surveillance systems in Latin America have advanced in the reporting of congenital microcephaly cases, substantial gaps remain in case ascertainment and etiological investigation, particularly concerning genetic contributions Full article

Background/Objectives: The effects of combining chemotherapy with hormonal therapy based on hormone receptor (HR) expression in epithelial ovarian, fallopian tube, or primary peritoneal (EOC) remain unclear. This study evaluated the efficacy and safety of physician-chosen chemotherapy combined with hormonal therapy in patients with heavily pretreated advanced EOC, stratified by HR expression. Methods: This phase II, multicenter, pilot study included patients with heavily pretreated advanced EOC, allocated to estrogen receptor (ER)-dominant or progesterone receptor (PR)-dominant arms. Patients in the ER-dominant arm received tamoxifen plus physician-selected chemotherapy, while those in the PR-dominant arm received megestrol acetate (MA) plus chemotherapy. The primary outcome was the best objective response rate (ORR) for six months, assessed using an optimal two-stage Simon design. Results: Among 33 ER-dominant patients with high-grade serous carcinoma (HGSC), the six-month best ORR was 27.3% (3% complete response, 24.2% partial response). The six-month ORR and clinical benefit rate (CBR) were 18.8% and 37.5%, respectively, with 62.5% experiencing progressive disease (PD). Among three PR-dominant patients (two clear cell carcinoma and one HGSC), the six-month best ORR was 0%. The six-month ORR and CBR were also 0%, and all experienced PD within six months. No unacceptable toxicity related to tamoxifen or MA was encountered. Conclusions: In heavily pretreated advanced HGSC patients with ER-dominant expression, chemotherapy combined with tamoxifen showed encouraging clinical activity with favorable safety. While limited by the study design, these findings suggest a potential role for tailored hormonal therapy combined with chemotherapy based on HR expression in heavily pretreated advanced EOC. Acute Immunological Biomarkers for Predicting Chronic Rheumatologic Disease After Chikungunya Virus Infection

Early biomarkers are needed to predict the long-term persistence of rheumatical symptoms in patients infected with Chikungunya virus (CHIKV). This nested case-control study aimed to assess immunological factors during the early phases of CHIKV infection to predict the risk of post-CHIK chronic rheumatism (pCHIK-CR) in adult patients of two prospective cohorts. We evaluated 46 febrile patients (median age: 33.5 years; IQR: 19 years; women: 50.0%) with CHIKV infection confirmed during the 2014–2015 outbreak in Santander, Colombia. The participants were classified by a rheumatologist as either cases (pCHIK-CR) or controls (WoRM, without rheumatical manifestations). We quantified serum levels of IL-4, IL-6, IL-8/CXCL-8, IL-27, CCL-2, CXCL-9, CXCL-10, and IgG using Luminex and ELISA assays during the acute and subacute phases of infection. Then, we evaluated the association of these immune factors with the case-control status using piecewise logistic regression adjusted for age and sex. There were non-linear associations between IL-8/CXCL-8, CXCL-9, and CXCL-10 with pCHIK-CR. Increases in the levels of IL-8/CXCL-8 (<35.7 pg/mL), CXCL-9 (≥6000 pg/mL), and CXCL-10 (≥36,800 pg/mL) were significantly associated with a reduced risk of pCHIK-CR (adjusted ORs: 0.85, 0.96, and 0.94, respectively). These results suggest that increases in IL-8/CXCL-8, CXCL-9, and CXCL-10 levels, measured in the early stages of CHIKV infection, may predict a chronic disease risk. This suggests the possibility that an early and strong immune response could contribute to enhancing CHIKV control and potentially reduce the risk of persistent joint symptoms. Given their expression patterns and timing, these three immune factors may be considered promising biomarker candidates for assessing the risk of chronic rheumatologic disease. These findings should be considered as exploratory and validated in additional cohort studies. Full article

Marine heatwaves (MHWs) are an emerging challenge for aquaculture, increasing the frequency and severity of disease outbreaks in farmed fish, weakening immunocompetence and compromising overall health and survival. As climate change stressors intensify, there is an urgent need for cost-effective and environmentally friendly strategies to enhance fish resilience. This study investigated the efficacy of Laminaria digitata, a brown macroalga, included in aquafeeds as powder (0.3% and 1.5%) or extract (0.3%) in improving the stress response of juvenile gilthead seabream (Sparus aurata) co-exposed to Vibrio harveyi infection during a category III MHW event. Under control conditions, L. digitata supplementation maintained or improved fish growth performance and overall well-being. After MHW exposure, the 1.5% powdered and 0.3% extract diets were more effective in mitigating thermal stress, reducing liver oxidative stress and lowering plasma cortisol levels. In infected fish, these diets improved resistance to V. harveyi, with reduced cortisol and alanine aminotransferase concentrations indicating hepatoprotective properties, and lower lipid peroxidation and decreased antioxidant enzyme activities reflecting an amplified capacity to counteract oxidative stress induced by inflammation. Overall, L. digitata is a promising aquafeed supplement, with the 1.5% powdered form offering a cost-effective alternative to the extract without compromising efficacy. Full article

Extreme weather events, such as marine heatwaves (MHWs), pose serious threats to the aquaculture sector, facilitating the occurrence of disease outbreaks and compromising farmed animals’ welfare and survival. Hence, finding eco-innovative strategies to improve animal immunocompetence is essential to assure aquaculture’s sustainability and resilience in a rapidly changing ocean. This study evaluated the immunostimulatory potential of Laminaria digitata powder (0.3% and 1.5%) and extract (0.3%) in juvenile gilthead seabream (Sparus aurata) exposed to a Vibrio harveyi outbreak during a Category III MHW event (T = 25.7 °C). Overall, L. digitata supplementation did not significantly affect fish immunocompetence under optimal rearing conditions (T = 21.4 °C; no infection), nor did it induce any adverse effects. However, both the powder (1.5%) and extract (0.3%) forms of L. digitata supplementation effectively mitigated the negative impacts prompted by the MHW and Vibrio harveyi infection—evidenced by improvements in fish health indicators, hematological parameters, leukocyte viability, granulocyte proportions, and reductions in peroxidase activity and immunoglobulin M levels. From an economic standpoint, supplementation with 1.5% L. digitata powder emerged as the most promising strategy, offering a practical balance between effectiveness and affordability for large-scale applications. These findings highlight the potential of L. digitata as an immunostimulatory aquafeed supplement, with promising benefits for fish health and resilience under adverse rearing conditions. Background/Objectives: The industrial extraction and purification processes of Cannabis sativa L. compounds are critical steps in creating formulations with reliable and reproducible therapeutic and sensorial attributes. Methods: For this study, standardized preparations of chemotype I were chemically analyzed, and the sensory attributes were studied to characterize the extraction and purification processes, ensuring the maximum retention of cannabinoids and minimization of other secondary metabolites. The industrial process used deep-cooled ethanol for selective extraction. Results: Taking into consideration that decarboxylation occurs in the process, the cannabinoid profile composition was preserved from the herbal substance to the herbal preparations, with wiped-film distillation under deep vacuum conditions below 0.2 mbar, as a final purification step. The profiles of the terpenes and cannabinoids in crude and purified Full-spectrum Extract Cannabis Oil (FECO) were analyzed at different stages to evaluate compositional changes that occurred throughout processing. Subjective intensity and acceptance ratings were received for taste, color, overall appearance, smell, and mouthfeel of FECO preparations. Conclusions: According to sensory analysis, purified FECO was more accepted than crude FECO, which had a stronger and more polarizing taste, and received higher ratings for color and overall acceptance. In contrast, a full cannabis extract in the market resulted in lower acceptance due to taste imbalance. The purification process effectively removed non-cannabinoids, improving sensory quality while maintaining therapeutic potency. Terpene markers of the flower were remarkably preserved in SOMAÍ’s preparations’ fingerprint, highlighting a major qualitative profile reproducibility and the opportunity for their previous separation and/or controlled reintroduction. The study underscores the importance of monitoring the extraction and purification processes to optimize the cannabinoid content and sensory characteristics in cannabis preparations. Full article
