Green buildings (GBs) are a means of achieving sustainable construction. However, they face challenges, such as higher (perceived or actual) investment costs and inadequate capital. Green finance (GF) presents opportunities to address some challenges of GB. Barriers hinder GF-in-GB; however, previous studies identifying barriers to GF-in-GB are limited. Moreover, prior studies have not considered the interrelationships among these barriers. This study aims to identify and prioritize the critical barriers to GF-in-GB in Ghana to inform decision-making by policymakers and stakeholders. This study developed a valid set of barriers and criteria from the literature to ascertain their interactions through two rounds of Delphi surveys with 12 professionals with GF-in-GB experience. A two-step fuzzy decision-making trial and evaluation laboratory (FDEMATEL) method was employed to validate 16 criteria of barriers using linguistic preferences. The findings of this study indicate that split incentives, inadequate private investment, inadequate management support, and limited green projects are critical barriers to GF-in-GB. These criteria deserve critical attention, as they are of high importance cause indices and can give rise to effect barriers. The government can adopt the research findings in policymaking and by other stakeholders that seek to eliminate barriers by focusing on the most influential ones. Full article

Bioactive peptides have significant potential for applications in pharmaceuticals, the food industry, and cosmetics due to their wide spectrum of biological activities. However, their pronounced structural and functional heterogeneity complicates the classification and prediction of biological activity. This study uses data from the PepLab platform, comprising 2748 experimentally confirmed bioactive peptides distributed across 15 functional classes, including ACE inhibitors, antimicrobial, anticancer, antioxidant, toxins, and others. For each peptide, the amino acid sequence and key physicochemical descriptors are provided, calculated via the integrated DMPep module, such as GRAVY index, aliphatic index, isoelectric point, molecular weight, Boman index, and sequence length. The dataset exhibits class imbalance, with class sizes ranging from 14 to 524 peptides. An innovative methodology is proposed, combining descriptive statistical analysis, structural modeling via DEMATEL, and structural equation modeling with neural networks (SEM-NN), where SEM-NN is used to capture complex nonlinear causal relationships between descriptors and functional classes. The results of these dependencies are integrated into a multi-class machine learning model to improve interpretability and predictive performance. Targeted data augmentation was applied to mitigate class imbalance. The developed classifier achieved predictive accuracy of up to 66%, a relatively high value given the complexity of the problem and the limited dataset size. These results confirm that integrating structured dependency modeling with artificial intelligence is an effective approach for functional peptide classification and supports the rational design of novel bioactive molecules. Government-invested Engineering, Procurement, and Construction (EPC) projects often encounter challenges, such as ambiguous value-added pathways and undefined key driving mechanisms, which impede efficiency improvements during implementation. To systematically elucidate the value-added pathways and core driving mechanisms in these projects, this study identified and distilled 20 critical influencing factors across four dimensions—contract cost, organization, technology, and environment—through a combination of a literature review, case analysis, and a questionnaire survey yielding 68 valid responses. Employing a DEMATEL–TAISM–MICMAC hybrid model, the research conducted an in-depth analysis: the DEMATEL method quantified the interdependencies among factors and identified key causal elements; a TAISM-directed topological hierarchy diagram was constructed to clearly delineate the hierarchical transmission pathways; and the MICMAC model was utilized for driver–dependency analysis, classifying factor roles and providing cross-validation from three analytical perspectives. The results indicate that S12 (collaborative participation in early planning and design phases) exhibits the highest causal influence and serves as the core driving factor, while S1 (detailed and explicit contractual clauses) and S12 are positioned at the root level of the hierarchical model, functioning as foundational independent factors that regulate the entire system. The value-added pathways are characterized by a hierarchical transmission logic of “root level → transitional level → direct level”. Based on these findings, the study proposes a system optimization strategy of “strengthening the root level, optimizing the transitional level, and safeguarding the direct level”, thereby offering both theoretical insights and practical guidance for enhancing the value-added efficiency of government-invested EPC projects. The current research on smart construction sites is mainly from the perspective of the whole life cycle of the project, and often focuses on the identification of factors at the macro level. It lacks in-depth quantitative analysis of the complex interdependence between influencing factors, and it is difficult to accurately identify key driving factors and weight distribution. This paper takes engineering project management as the perspective, constructs a smart site construction model. The advantages of DEMATEL method and ANP method are innovatively combined to construct the DEMATEL-ANP evaluation model, which overcomes the limitations of single method in weight determination and relationship analysis, and provides a more detailed and scientific analysis framework for the evaluation of smart site construction, and, taking the Urumqi region as an example, its smart construction is evaluated and analyzed. The results of the study show that the correlation between the indicators affecting the construction of smart construction sites is strong, in which the comprehensive influence of personnel safety management, construction quality management, and construction safety management play a greater role, with the comprehensive weights of 0.0917, 0.0817 and 0.0767, respectively; the total score of smart construction site construction of Urumqi region is 63.959, which is in the primary construction stage. Among them, the construction and application of meteorological monitoring are the best, scoring 70.26; the construction and application of most indicators, such as personnel safety management, cost comparison decision-making, dust monitoring, and noise monitoring, are the second best; the construction progress control and wastewater monitoring construction are poor, scoring 55.21 and 57.741. The results of this study can provide direct value to key audiences such as construction enterprise managers, government regulators, and smart site solution providers. This paper considers regions with unique climate types to provide a reference for the construction of intelligent construction sites in the same type of regions. Full article

To enhance the understanding and management of fire risks in subway stations, this study aims to identify critical fire risk transmission paths using an integrated PSR–DEMATEL–ISM approach. A comprehensive evaluation framework is first constructed based on the Pressure–State–Response (PSR) model, systematically categorizing 22 influencing factors into three dimensions: pressure, state, and response. The Decision-Making Trial and Evaluation Laboratory (DEMATEL) method is then employed to analyze the causal relationships and centrality among these factors, distinguishing between cause and effect groups. Subsequently, Interpretive Structural Modeling (ISM) is applied to organize the factors into a multi-level hierarchical structure, enabling the identification of risk propagation pathways. The analysis reveals five high-centrality and high-causality factors: fire safety education and training, completeness of fire management rules and regulations, fire smoke detection and firefighting capability, operational status of monitoring equipment, and effectiveness of emergency response plans. Based on these key drivers, six major transmission paths are derived, reflecting the internal logic of fire risk evolution in subway environments. Among them, chains originating from Fire Safety Education and Training (S6), Architectural Fire Protection Design (S7), and Completeness of Fire Management Rules and Regulations (S16) exhibit the most significant influence on system-wide safety performance. This study provides theoretical support and practical guidance for proactive fire prevention and emergency planning in urban rail transit systems, offering a structured and data-driven approach to identifying vulnerabilities and improving system resilience. Seismic retrofitting of reinforced concrete (RC) structures is essential for improving resilience and extending service life, particularly in regions with outdated building codes. However, selecting the optimal retrofitting strategy requires balancing multiple interdependent sustainability criteria—economic, environmental, and social—under expert-based uncertainty. This study presents a fuzzy hybrid multi-criteria decision-making (MCDM) approach that combines DEMATEL, DANP, and TOPSIS to represent causal interdependencies, derive interlinked priority weights, and rank retrofit alternatives. The assessment applies three complementary life cycle-based tools—cost-based, environmental, and social sustainability analyses following LCCA, LCA, and S-LCA frameworks, respectively—to evaluate three commonly used retrofitting strategies: RC jacketing, steel jacketing, and carbon fiber-reinforced polymer (CFRP) wrapping. The fuzzy-DANP methodology enables accurate modeling of feedback among sustainability dimensions and improves expert consensus through causal mapping. The findings identify CFRP as the top-ranked alternative, primarily attributed to its enhanced performance in both environmental and social aspects. The model’s robustness is confirmed via sensitivity analysis and cross-method validation. This mathematically grounded framework offers a reproducible and interpretable tool for decision-makers in civil infrastructure, enabling sustainability-oriented retrofitting under uncertainty. Facing the global competitive market and ever-changing customer demands, manufacturers must navigate intense competition and uncertain demand while striving to enhance customer satisfaction. As a result, the demand for customized products has become a crucial design consideration. To respond accurately and swiftly in a competitive market, manufacturers must focus on customer needs, analyze market trends and competitor information, and leverage data analysis as a reference for new product development and design. This study presents a new product development model by integrating quality function deployment (QFD), decision-making trial and evaluation laboratory (DEMATEL), analytic network process (ANP), and fuzzy set theory. It first uses a 2-tuple fuzzy DEMATEL to identify significant interrelationships among factors. A revised house of quality (HOQ) is then constructed to map relationships among customer requirements (CRs), engineering requirements (ERs), and the influences of CRs on ERs. To address uncertainty in human judgment, fuzzy set theory is incorporated into the ANP. The integrated model can determine the relative importance of the ERs. The proposed model is applied to touch panel development, and the results are recommended to the R&D team for new product development. Full article

While blockchain technology (BT) has gained attention in the construction industry, limited research has focused on its application in sustainable construction procurement management (SCPM). Addressing this gap, the present study investigates the key drivers influencing BT adoption in SCPM using a hybrid methodological approach. This study includes a systematic review of academic and grey literature, expert consultations, and quantitative analysis using advanced fuzzy-based algorithms, k-means clustering, and social network analysis (SNA). Data were collected through an online survey distributed to professionals experienced in SCPM and blockchain implementation. The Fuzzy DEMATEL results identify “high quality”, “decentralization and data security”, and “cost of the overall project” as the most critical drivers. Meanwhile, SNA highlights “stability of the system”, “overall performance of the project”, and “customer satisfaction” as the most influential nodes within the network. These insights provide actionable guidance for industry stakeholders aiming to advance SCPM through blockchain integration and contribute to theoretical advancements by proposing novel analytical frameworks. To overcome the absence of a standardized budget quota system for high-standard farmland projects and the resultant extended compilation cycles and high workloads, this study systematically analyzes quota consumption and innovatively proposes an integrated DEMATEL-ISM-BN and gray clustering analytical model. Through a literature review and engineering feature analysis, a hierarchical factor system was established, encompassing six dimensions (environmental, technical, labor, machinery, material, and management) and 24 indicators. The DEMATEL-ISM method quantified factor weights and structured them into a five-level hierarchy, while Bayesian networks (BNs) enabled probabilistic productivity predictions (29% conservative, 45% moderate, and 26% advanced). Gray clustering was integrated to derive a comprehensive representative consumption value, and validation across six regions demonstrated a comprehensive productivity index of 0.986 (CV = 2.6%) for 17 earthwork projects, confirming model robustness. This research constructs a standardized “factor structure analysis–probabilistic deduction–regional clustering” framework, providing a theoretical foundation for precise budget compilation in high-standard farmland and proposing a novel methodological paradigm for quota consumption research. With the arrival of an aging society and the continuous extension of the human lifespan, the quality of life has not improved in a corresponding manner. People’s demand for happiness and health is increasing. As a result, a model emerged that integrates tourism and medical services, which is health tourism. This growing demand has prompted many service providers to see it as a business opportunity and enter the market. Tourism can help travelers release work stress and restore physical and mental balance; meanwhile, health check-ups and disease treatment can help them regain health. Consumers have long favored health and medical tourism because it helps relieve stress and promotes overall well-being. As people age, some consumers experience a gradual decline in physical functions, making it difficult for them to participate in regular travel services provided by traditional travel agencies. Therefore, this study aims to explore the service needs of health and medical tourism customers (tourists/patients) and the interrelationships among these service needs, so that health and medical tourism service providers can develop more customized and diversified services. This study identifies four key drivers of medical tourism services: medical services, medical facilities, tour planning, and hospitality facilities. This study uses the APA (attention and performance analysis) method to assess each dimension and criterion and utilizes the DEMATEL method with the NRM (network relationship map) to identify network relationships. By combining APA and NRM techniques, this study develops the APA-NRM technique to evaluate adoption strategies and identify suitable paths for health tourism services, providing tailored development strategies and recommendations for service providers to enhance the service experience. The exponential growth of lithium-ion battery consumption has amplified the urgency of identifying sustainable and economically viable recycling solutions. This study proposes an integrated decision-making framework based on the T-Spherical Fuzzy Einstein Interaction Aggregator DEMATEL-CoCoSo approach to comprehensively evaluate and rank battery recycling technologies under uncertainty. Ten key evaluation criteria—encompassing environmental, economic, and technological dimensions—were identified through expert consultation and literature synthesis. The T-Spherical Fuzzy DEMATEL method was first applied to analyze the causal interdependencies among criteria and determine their relative weights, revealing that environmental drivers such as energy consumption, greenhouse gas emissions, and waste generation exert the most systemic influence. Subsequently, six recycling alternatives were assessed and ranked using the CoCoSo method enhanced by Einstein-based aggregation, which captured the complex interactions present in the experts’ evaluations and assessments. Results indicate that Direct Recycling is the most favorable option, followed by the Hydrometallurgical and Bioleaching methods, while Pyrometallurgical Recycling ranked lowest due to its high energy demands and environmental burden. The proposed hybrid model effectively handles linguistic uncertainty, expert variability, and interdependent evaluation structures, offering a robust decision-support tool for sustainable technology selection in the circular battery economy. The framework is adaptable to other domains requiring structured expert-based evaluations under fuzzy environments. Full article

Effective water infrastructure planning and management is key to sustainable water supply globally. This research assesses water infrastructure planning and management in Gauteng, South Africa, amid growing challenges from rapid urbanisation, high water demand, climate change, and resource scarcity. These challenges threaten the achievement of Sustainable Development Goals 6 and 11; hence, an integrated approach is required for water sustainability. The study responds to a gap in the literature, which often treats planning and management separately, by adopting an integrated, multi-institutional approach across the water value chain. A mixed-methods triangulation strategy was employed for data collection whereby surveys provided quantitative data, while two sets of structured interviews were conducted: the first round to determine causal relationships among the critical success factors and the second round to validate the proposed framework. The findings reveal a misalignment between infrastructure planning and implementation, contributing to infrastructure backlogs and a short- to medium-term focus. Infrastructure management is further constrained by inadequate system redundancy, leading to ineffective maintenance. External factors such as delayed adoption of 4IR technologies, lack of climate resilient strategies, and fragmented institutional coordination exacerbate these issues. Using Decision-Making Trial and Evaluation Laboratory (DEMATEL) analysis, the study identified Strategic Alignment and a Value-Driven Approach as the most influential critical success factors in water asset management. The research concludes by proposing an integrated water infrastructure and planning framework that supports sustainable water supply. Full article

The integration of artificial intelligence (AI), big data analytics, and blockchain technologies within the digital economy presents transformative opportunities for promoting low-carbon urban development. However, a systematic understanding of how these digital innovations influence urban carbon mitigation remains limited. This study addresses this gap by proposing two research questions (RQs): (1) What are the key success factors for artificial intelligence, big data, and blockchain in urban carbon emission reduction? (2) How do these technologies interact and support the transition to low-carbon cities? To answer these questions, the study employs a hybrid methodological framework combining the decision-making trial and evaluation laboratory (DEMATEL) and interpretive structural modeling (ISM) techniques. The data were collected through structured expert questionnaires, enabling the identification and hierarchical analysis of twelve critical success factors (CSFs). Grounded in sustainability transitions theory and institutional theory, the CSFs are categorized into three dimensions: (1) digital infrastructure and technological applications; (2) digital transformation of industry and economy; (3) sustainable urban governance. The results reveal that e-commerce and sustainable logistics, the adoption of the circular economy, and cross-sector collaboration are the most influential drivers of digital-enabled decarbonization, while foundational elements such as smart energy systems and digital infrastructure act as key enablers. The DEMATEL-ISM approach facilitates a system-level understanding of the causal relationships and strategic priorities among the CSFs, offering actionable insights for urban planners, policymakers, and stakeholders committed to sustainable digital transformation and carbon neutrality. The complexity of assessment is a significant problem in designing renewable energy source (RES) products, especially when one wants to take into account their various aspects, e.g., technical, environmental, or social. Hence, the aim of the research is to develop a model supporting the decision-making process of RES product development based on meeting the criteria of quality, environmental impact, and social responsibility (QES). The model was developed in four main stages, implementing multi-criteria decision support methods such as DEMATEL (decision-making trial and evaluation laboratory) and TOPSIS (Technique for Order Preference by Similarity to an Ideal Solution), as well as criteria for social responsibility and environmental impact from the ISO 26000 standard. The model was tested and illustrated using the example of photovoltaic panels (PVs): (i) five prototypes were developed, (ii) 30 PV criteria were identified from the qualitative, environmental, and social groups, (iii) the criteria were reduced to 13 key (strongly intercorrelated) criteria according to DEMATEL, (iv) the PV prototypes were assessed taking into account the importance and fulfilment of their key criteria according to TOPSIS, and (v) a PV ranking was created, where the fifth prototype turned out to be the most advantageous (QES = 0.79). The main advantage of the model is its simple form and transparency of application through a systematic analysis and evaluation of many different criteria, after which a ranking of design solutions is obtained. QES ensures precise decision-making in terms of sustainability of new or already available products on the market, also those belonging to RES. Therefore, QES will find application in various companies, especially those looking for low-cost decision-making support techniques at early stages of product development (design and conceptualization). Against the backdrop of digital transformation, this study constructs an analytical framework for the influence mechanism of the data-driven dynamic capabilities of foreign trade SMEs from the perspective of digital intelligence immunity, aiming to clarify the complex relationships among influencing factors and multi-combination paths for capability improvement. The research employs the fuzzy AHP-DEMATEL method to quantify the complex influence relationships among factors and uses fsQCA to analyze the configuration paths of high-level data-driven dynamic capabilities. Results show that digital intelligence management and analysis, digital intelligence supervision and early warning, and digital intelligence ecosystem are key drivers of data-driven dynamic capabilities, with digital intelligence talents serving as a guarantee and digital foundation as a foundation. The study identifies the following two core paths for forming high-level capabilities: “management–talent–ecology collaboration” and “early warning–technology–mechanism enhancement.” It concludes that foreign trade SMEs should strengthen digital intelligence management and ecological construction, improve early warning mechanisms, and adopt multi-pronged approaches to build data-driven dynamic capabilities, providing a theoretical basis for their digital transformation and capability upgrading.
