Tanacetum parthenium (Asteraceae) has been traditionally used worldwide for medicinal purposes, and some of its therapeutic uses have been attributed to the pharmacological effects of its secondary metabolites. The root culture of this species might represent a sustainable source of several pharmacologically active compounds. The biomass of a root T. parthenium culture was extracted with methanol and fractionated using column chromatography. Three selected fractions (4TP, 5TP, and 8TP) were analyzed via spectrophotometric, chromatographic, and mass spectrometry techniques and in vitro pharmacological assays. The greatest values for total phenolic and phenolic acid contents and antibacterial activity against Escherichia coli were determined for 4TP. The highest values for total flavonoid and sesquiterpene lactone contents, antioxidant potential, and α-amylase inhibitory effect were determined for 8TP. The antibacterial effect against Staphylococcus aureus was not significantly different among the three fractions. The root culture of T. parthenium is a potential source of several metabolites, such as phenolic acids, fatty acids, coumarins, sesquiterpenoids, and triterpenoids, which are capable of exerting α-amylase inhibition and antioxidant, antibacterial, and cytotoxic effects. The conservation and restoration of water-gilded wooden cultural heritage, such as polychrome sculptures, frames, panels, altarpieces, etc., requires the use of fillers that guarantee structural stability, physicochemical and mechanical compatibility with the original support, and the ability to adapt to dimensional movements induced by thermo-hygrometric variations. This study, conducted as part of the DorART Project, analyzed the behavior of nine formulations, both commercial and non-commercial, selected through a review of the state-of-the-art specialized literature, along with the use of participatory science, which focused on the practices and materials most commonly used by professionals in the field. The experimental design was based on three types of specimens: two with wooden supports, selected for evaluating their interaction with the original material and with the traditional water gilding technique, and a third type for analyzing the individual behavior of the tested materials. Analyses of adhesion, tensile strength, Shore C hardness, gloss, abrasion test results, wettability, pH changes, and chemical composition were performed using ATR-FTIR spectroscopy. The results showed significant differences depending on the type of curing used and the composition and aging behavior of the specimen. Some of the fillers demonstrated improved compatibility with water-based gilding, facilitating workability and providing structural strength. M3 and M9 demonstrated an optimal balance of workability and aging stability. The results of this study can help restorers select materials based on their specific needs, considering the requirements of mechanical adaptation to the substrate, compatibility, and durability. Infections with multidrug-resistant (MDR) organisms remain a significant cause of morbidity and mortality among liver transplant recipients, despite advances in surgical techniques and immunosuppressive therapy. This prospective observational study aimed to evaluate the impact of targeted perioperative antibiotic prophylaxis against MDR Gram-negative bacteria on postoperative infections and mortality in liver transplant recipients. Seventy-nine adult patients who underwent liver transplantation and were admitted to the ICU for more than 24 h postoperatively were included. Demographics, disease severity scores, comorbidities, and lengths of ICU and hospital stay were recorded. Colonization with carbapenem-resistant Gram-negative bacteria was assessed via preoperative and postoperative cultures from the blood, urine, rectum, and tracheal secretions. Patients were divided into two groups: those with MDR colonization or infection who received targeted prophylaxis and controls who received standard prophylaxis. Infectious complications (30.4%) occurred significantly less frequently than non-infectious ones (62.0%, p = 0.005). The most common infections were bacteremia (22.7%), pneumonia (17.7%), and surgical site infections (2.5%), with most events occurring within 15 days post-transplant. MDR pathogens isolated included Klebsiella pneumoniae, Acinetobacter baumannii, and Pseudomonas aeruginosa. Although overall complication and mortality rates at 30 days and 3 months did not differ significantly between groups, the targeted prophylaxis group had fewer infectious complications (22.8% vs. 68.5%, p = 0.008), particularly bacteremia (p = 0.007). Infection-related mortality was also significantly reduced in this group (p = 0.039). These findings suggest that identification of MDR colonization and administration of targeted perioperative antibiotics may reduce septic complications in liver transplant patients. Further prospective studies are warranted to confirm benefits on outcomes and resource utilization. Full article

Objective: To evaluate the effect of a probiotic combination on clinical and oral microbiological parameters in patients with head and neck cancer (HNC) undergoing radiotherapy. Materials and Methods: A randomised, double-blind, placebo-controlled clinical trial was conducted with 72 HNC patients who had received radiotherapy within the past year. Participants were randomly assigned to receive either daily probiotic sachets or placebo for 30 days. Salivary parameters—including unstimulated and stimulated flow rates and pH—were evaluated alongside oral microbiota profiles, including total bacterial load and selected periodontopathogens. Assessments were performed at baseline and post-intervention using sialometry, pH analysis, bacterial culture, and quantitative real-time PCR (qPCR). Results: Sixty-one patients completed the study (31 in the probiotic group, 30 in the placebo group). Stimulated salivary flow increased significantly in the probiotic group (p = 0.0016), while unstimulated flow improved in both groups (p < 0.05). Salivary pH decreased significantly in the probiotic group (p = 0.0209); however, no intergroup differences were observed at the end of the intervention (p = 0.9839). qPCR showed significant reductions in total bacterial load (p = 0.0209) and Fusobacterium nucleatum (p = 0.0080). Culture confirmed the reduction of F. nucleatum (p = 0.0026), with a trend towards significance for total cultivable bacterial count (p = 0.0502). Conclusions: Daily supplementation with a probiotic combination may serve as a practical and well-tolerated adjunctive measure in clinical settings to improve salivary function and reduce key oral pathogens, particularly Fusobacterium nucleatum, in patients undergoing or recovering from radiotherapy for head and neck cancer. These findings support its potential integration into routine supportive care protocols to mitigate xerostomia and oral dysbiosis in this population. Full article

Mycoplasmas are known respiratory pathogens in tortoises, but few studies exist in snakes. To better understand the correlation with clinical signs and co-infections, samples from mycoplasma-positive snakes with and without clinical respiratory disease were analyzed. Oral swabs from 15 snakes (pythons n = 12, boas n = 3) were examined using polymerase chain reaction (PCR) and third-generation sequencing (TGS). Additionally, mycoplasma isolation assays were performed. Pathogens detected by PCR included Mycoplasmas (15/15, 100%), serpentoviruses (9/15, 60%), and Chlamydia sp. (2/15, 13%); those detected by TGS included Mycoplasmas (14/15, 93%), serpentoviruses (10/15, 67%), Chlamydia sp. (1/15, 7%), and 15 different bacterial species. Sequencing of the mycoplasma PCR products revealed a close genetic relationship to Mycoplasmopsis agassizii. TGS identified genetically distinct mycoplasmas and three different serpentoviruses. While mycoplasmas could not be successfully propagated, Brucella intermedia comb. nov. was identified in eight cultures. Respiratory disease in snakes is often multifactorial, involving various pathogens and environmental influences. This study demonstrates that comprehensive diagnostics are essential for understanding disease processes in snakes and improving the detection of diverse pathogens. Further research is needed to improve laboratory diagnostics for infectious diseases in reptiles and to better understand the roles of various pathogens in respiratory diseases in snakes. Background: Congenital insensitivity to pain with anhidrosis (CIPA) is a rare genetic disorder, often leading to injuries and serious infections. In 2018, we established a multidisciplinary clinic (MDC) to provide structured, proactive care. We assessed the MDC’s impact on hospitalizations, surgeries, and infection rates. Methods: A retrospective study of genetically confirmed CIPA patients, treated from 2014 to 2024. Data from electronic medical records were compared between the pre-MDC (2014–2017) and post-MDC (2018–2024) periods. The core MDC team includes an infectious disease specialist, orthopedic surgeon, and nurses. The patients are stratified according to their carriage of resistant organisms and are managed using strict infection control measures. Follow-ups are scheduled routinely or as needed. Treatment is guided by clinical findings and culture results. Results: A total of 59 patients were included in the study. The baseline age did not differ significantly between the two periods. Hospitalization rates declined by 30.7% (from 57.7 to 40.0 per 1000 days), and clinic visits decreased by 42.9% (25.5 to 14.6). Overall surgical rates remained stable (2.8 to 2.7), with a 61.9% decrease in eye surgeries and a 130.5% increase in elective tooth extractions. Infection rates increased by 52% (from 6.6 to 10.1 per 1000 days). Conclusions: The implementation of the MDC bundle led to reduced hospitalizations, clinic visits, and eye surgeries, alongside the increased use of elective tooth extractions and culture testing. Closer monitoring and early infection management contributed to fewer severe complications. These findings support the value of structured, proactive multidisciplinary care in improving outcomes for children with CIPA. Full article

Small-scale farms deserve attention and support because they play crucial and important roles. Apart from ensuring provision of food security, they also provide other economic, environmental, and social–cultural benefits. In the United States of America, these farms are agriculturally, culturally, and geographically different. They have varied needs that trigger an array of distinct biophysical, socioeconomic, and institutional challenges. The effects of these challenges are exacerbated by economic uncertainty, technological advancements, climate change, and other environmental concerns. To provide ideal services to the small-scale farm audience, it is necessary to understand these challenges and opportunities that can be leveraged to enhance their productivity and profitability. This article reviews the challenges faced by small-scale farming in the United States of America. It then reviews possible pathways to enhance their productivity and profitability. The review revealed that U.S. small-scale farms face several challenges. They include accessing farmland, credit and capital, lack of knowledge and skills, and technology adoption. Others are difficulties to insure, competition from corporations, and environmental uncertainties associated with climate change. The paper then reviews key pathways to enhance small-scale farmers’ capacities and resilience with a positive impact on their productivity and profitability. They are enhanced cooperative extension services, incentivization, strategic marketing, annexing technology, and government support, among others. Based on the diversity of farms and their needs, responses should be targeted towards individual needs. Since small-scale farm products have an effect on human health and dietary patterns, strategies to increase productivity should be linked to nutrition and health. Full article

Background: Infectious complications are common after percutaneous nephrolithotomy (PCNL). Clinical guidelines recommend, previous to surgery, prolonged antibiotic regimens in patients with preoperative positive urine cultures to reduce infectious risk. However, such strategies may increase selective pressure and promote antimicrobial resistance. Evidence supporting the use of a single antibiotic dose tailored to culture sensitivity in these cases is limited but emerging. Methods: We conducted a retrospective observational study including 187 PCNL procedures performed between 2021 and 2023 under an individualized antibiotic prophylaxis protocol. Patients with negative or contaminated urine cultures received a single empirical dose, while those with recent positive cultures received a single dose based on antimicrobial susceptibility testing. Postoperative complications—including fever, sepsis, and a composite outcome—were analyzed through multivariable logistic regression, comparing high- and low-risk patients. Results: A total of 67.9% of procedures were performed in patients meeting at least one high-risk criterion, including a positive preoperative urine culture in 32.1%. The overall incidence of infectious complications was 11.9% (fever 8.7%, sepsis 3.2%), with no significant differences between risk groups. A low concordance was observed between preoperative and intraoperative urine cultures (Spearman = 0.3954). Conclusions: A single preoperative antibiotic dose adjusted to the antibiogram, even in patients with a positive urine culture, was not associated with increased infectious complications. This approach is an initial step that supports a rational and individualized prophylactic strategy aligned with the goals of antimicrobial stewardship programs (ASPs). Full article

Foliar application of biostimulants can be a valid option to reach the goal of sustainable intensification in agriculture, especially in extensive crops such as durum wheat. However, due to the wide range of active ingredients and their mixtures available in the market, the need to select the most efficient product in a specific growing environment is of dramatic importance to achieve remarkable results in yield and grain quality. To analyze the potential of different active ingredients, a field trial was performed in two consecutive growing seasons (2023 and 2024) under Mediterranean climatic conditions. A randomized block design with three replicates was used. Durum wheat cultivar “Iride” was treated with the following five foliar biostimulants in comparison with the untreated control (T0): seaweed and plant extracts (T1); micronized vaterite (T2); culture broth of Pseudomonas protegens (T3); humic and fulvic acids (T4); organic nitrogen fertilizer (N 5%) containing glycine betaine (T5). Biostimulant treatment was applied at the end of tillering and at heading. Root length, chlorophyll content, grain yield, yield components and grain quality were measured and subjected to a one-way analysis of variance. As compared to the control, seaweed and plant extracts as well as micronized vaterite showed the best results in terms of grain yield (29% and 24% increase, respectively), root length (120% and 77% increase, respectively) and grain protein content (one percentage point increase, from approx. 12% to 13%). The results from this study can help Mediterranean farmers and researchers to develop new fertilization protocols to reach the goals of the “Farm to Fork” European strategy. Full article

Social marketing modifies individual behavior to achieve specific outcomes, mitigating environmental pressures. While proven effective in influencing consumer behavior, empirical studies on its impact on the tourism sector remain limited. This study examines how various social marketing channels influence tourists’ consumption decisions and contributes to achieving SDGs 11 and 12 by reviewing the existing methods of disseminating social marketing content. A conceptual model grounded in theory was developed and empirically tested. In particular, it focuses on the establishment of direct and indirect multi-route effects between social marketing and consumer behavior and introduces different influencing factors. Given the scarcity of research on collective culture, quantitative methods were employed, with data collected through questionnaires in mainland China. Results indicate that social marketing media significantly influence tourist behavior, with three mediators—subjective norms, personal values, and communication channels—playing varying roles across media types (events, public relations, and traditional media). Subjective norms, values, and communication channels act as mediators. This study bridges social marketing, tourist behavior, and SDG attainment, offering novel insights and practical implications for tourism practitioners. Full article

A nanoparticle formulation was generated from distiller dried grains with solubles (DDGS), and its effect on the production of anthraquinones (AQs) was evaluated on Rubia tinctorum hairy roots. The DDGS material was washed with water and ethyl acetate to remove mainly the soluble organic/inorganic molecules and reduce the fat content, respectively, followed by an alkaline treatment to remove the polysaccharides. The resulting alkaline solutions were then lyophilized and redispersed in deionized water to generate a monodispersed nanoparticulate formulation (DDGS-NP) with a hydrodynamic diameter and zeta potential of 227 ± 42 nm and −53 ± 7 mV, respectively. The formulation demonstrated good colloidal stability over time, and sterilized DDGS-NPs maintained comparable physicochemical properties. The nanoparticles were enriched in protein fractions, unsaturated fatty acids, and orthophosphate anion components from DDGS, as determined by solid-state Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (NMR), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), organic elemental analysis (OEA), and inductively coupled plasma optical emission spectrometry (ICP-OES) techniques. The DDGS-NPs were tested at different concentrations on Rubia tinctorum hairy roots, in comparison to or in combination with methyl jasmonate (MeJ), for their capacity to induce the production of AQs. All DDGS-NP concentrations increased the production of specific AQs to 7.7 (100 mg L−1), 7.8 (200 mg L−1), and 9.3 µmol/gFW (500 mg L−1), with an extracellular AQ accumulation of 18 µM for the highest DDGS-NP concentration, in comparison with the control hairy roots (~2 µM AQ). The plant growth was not affected at any of the tested nanoparticle concentrations. Interestingly, the combination of DDGS-NPs and MeJ resulted in the highest extracellular AQ accumulation in R. tinctorum root cultures. Full article

The purpose of this study is to synthesize existing peer-reviewed literature on fashion renting and provide insights into its role within the broader framework of sustainable consumption and business practices within different cultural contexts, while also guiding future research efforts. This review includes only peer-reviewed journal articles and book chapters in English, with the search conducted up to 31 March 2025. A total of 95 academic papers published between 2010 and 2025 were analyzed to explore the evolving landscape of fashion rental consumption and business practices. NVivo 14 was used for the analysis of the collected literature. The findings revealed six key motivating benefits and six significant barriers that influence consumer participation in fashion renting. Additionally, five success factors and four critical challenges were identified as shaping the development of the fashion rental market. This research represents the first attempt to synthesize literature from both the consumer and business perspectives of fashion renting. The findings provide a comprehensive understanding of market dynamics related to fashion rental consumption and business practices, shedding light on the key factors that support the sustainability of fashion rental businesses as well as the challenges they face. Both theoretical and practical implications are discussed, offering valuable guidance for researchers and fashion industry stakeholders. Full article

This study examines food safety and waste behaviours depicted in the televised cooking competition MasterChef, a globally franchised series that showcases diverse culinary traditions and influences viewers’ practices. The research focuses on the MasterChef editions aired in Turkey and the United Kingdom, two countries with distinctly different social and cultural contexts. Video content analysis, based on predefined criteria, was employed to assess observable behaviours related to food safety and waste. Additionally, content analysis of episode transcripts identified verbal references to these themes. Principal Component Analysis was employed to categorise patterns in the observed behaviours. The findings revealed frequent lapses in food safety, with personal hygiene breaches more commonly observed in MasterChef UK, while cross-contamination issues were more prevalent in MasterChef Turkey. In both versions, the use of disposable materials and the discarding of edible food parts emerged as the most common waste-related practices. These behaviours appeared to be shaped by the cultural and culinary norms specific to each country. The study highlights the importance of cooking shows in promoting improved food safety and waste management practices. It recommends involving relevant experts during production and clearly communicating food safety and sustainability messages to increase viewer awareness and encourage positive behaviour change. Electromagnetic Transduction Therapy (EMTT) Enhances Tenocyte Regenerative Potential: Evidence for Senolytic-like Effects and Matrix Remodeling

Tendinopathies are a significant challenge in musculoskeletal medicine, with current treatments showing variable efficacy. Electromagnetic transduction therapy (EMTT) has emerged as a promising therapeutic approach, but its biological effects on tendon cells remain largely unexplored. Here, we investigated the effects of EMTT on primary cultured human tenocytes’ behavior and functions in vitro, focusing on cellular responses, senescence-related pathways, and molecular mechanisms. Primary cultures of human tenocytes were established from semitendinosus tendon biopsies of patients undergoing anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) reconstruction (n = 6, males aged 17–37 years). Cells were exposed to EMTT at different intensities (40 and 80 mT) and impulse numbers (1000–10,500). Cell viability (MTT assay), proliferation (Ki67), senescence markers (CDKN2a/INK4a), migration (scratch test), cytoskeleton organization (immunofluorescence), and gene expression (RT-PCR) were analyzed. A 40 mT exposure elicited minimal effects, whereas 80 mT treatments induced significant cellular responses. Repeated 80 mT exposure demonstrated a dual effect: despite a moderate decrease in overall cell vitality, increased Ki67 expression (+7%, p ≤ 0.05) and significant downregulation of senescence marker CDKN2a/INK4a were observed, suggesting potential senolytic-like activity. EMTT significantly enhanced cell migration (p < 0.001) and triggered cytoskeletal remodeling, with amplified stress fiber formation and paxillin redistribution. Molecular analysis revealed upregulation of tenogenic markers (Scleraxis, Tenomodulin) and enhanced Collagen I and III expressions, particularly with treatments at 80 mT, indicating improved matrix remodeling capacity. EMTT significantly promotes tenocyte proliferation, migration, and matrix production, while simultaneously exhibiting senolytic-like effects through downregulation of senescence-associated markers. These results support EMTT as a promising therapeutic approach for the management of tendinopathies through multiple regenerative mechanisms, though further studies are needed to validate these effects in vivo. Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) remains a progressive neurodegenerative disease, lacking effective causal therapies. The Wobbler mouse model harboring a spontaneous autosomal recessive mutation in the vacuolar protein sorting associated protein (Vps54), has emerged as a valuable model for investigating ALS pathophysiology and potential treatments. This model exhibits cellular and phenotypic parallels to human ALS, including protein aggregation, microglia and astrocyte activation, as well as characteristic disease progression at distinct stages. Exploring the underlying pathomechanisms and identifying therapeutic targets requires a comprehensive analysis of gene and protein expression. In this study, we examined the expression of three well-established housekeeping genes and proteins—calnexin, ß-actin, and ßIII-tubulin—in the cervical spinal cord of the Wobbler model. These candidates were selected based on their demonstrated stability across various systems like animal models or cell culture. Calnexin, an integral protein of the endoplasmic reticulum, ß-actin, a structural component of the cytoskeleton, and ß-tubulin III, a component of microtubules, were quantitatively assessed using quantitative reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) for gene expression and Western blotting for protein expression. Our results revealed no significant differences in the expression of CANX, ACTB, and TUBB3 between spinal cords of wild-type and Wobbler mice at the symptomatic stage (p40) at both the gene and protein levels. These findings suggest that the pathophysiological alterations induced by the Wobbler mutation do not significantly affect the expression of these crucial housekeeping genes and proteins at p40. Overall, this study provides a basis for further investigations using the Wobbler mouse model, while highlighting the potential use of calnexin, ß-actin, and ßIII-tubulin as reliable reference genes and proteins in future research to aid in the discovery for effective therapeutic interventions.
