Wigner’s little groups are the subgroups of the Poincaré group whose transformations leave the four-momentum of a relativistic particle invariant. The little group for a massive particle is SO(3)-like, whereas for a massless particle, it is E(2)-like. Multiple approaches to group contractions are discussed. It is shown that the Lie algebra of the E(2)-like little group for massless particles can be obtained from the SO(3) and from the SO(2, 1) group by boosting to the infinite-momentum limit. It is also shown that it is possible to obtain the generators of the E(2)-like and cylindrical groups from those of SO(3) as well as from those of SO(2, 1) by using the squeeze transformation. The contraction of the Lorentz group SO(3, 2) to the Poincaré group is revisited. As physical examples, two applications are chosen from classical optics. The first shows the contraction of a light ray from a spherical transparent surface to a straight line. The second shows that the focusing of the image in a camera can be formulated by the implementation of the focal condition to the [ABCD] matrix of paraxial optics, which can be regarded as a limiting procedure. Traditionally, the surface suspended particulate matter (SPM) and freshwater fluxes have been computed using in situ SPM, salinity, and current measurements or through the numerical modeling. In this study, satellite-derived SPM concentration, ocean current, and sea surface salinity (SSS) are used to demonstrate the capability to characterize and quantify the surface SPM flux and freshwater flux in the Yellow Sea (YS) and East China Sea (ECS). The different routes for SPM and freshwater to transport from the coastal region to the interior ECS are identified. The seasonal and interannual SPM and freshwater fluxes from the coastal region of the ECS are further characterized and quantified. The average SPM flux reaches ~0.3–0.4 g m−2 s−1 along the route. The SPM and the freshwater fluxes in the region show different seasonality. The intensified SPM flux from the ECS coast to the offshore in winter is one order higher than the SPM flux in summer, while the offshore freshwater flux peaks in summer and weakens significantly in winter. Particularly, we found that the SPM and SSS features in the ECS changed in response to the 2020 summer Yangtze River flood event. These spatial and temporal changes for SPM and SSS in the ECS in the 2020 summer and early autumn were attributed to the anomalous surface SPM and freshwater fluxes in the same period. Full article

Immunocapture RT-qPCR Method for DWV-A Surveillance: Eliminating Hazardous Extraction for Screening Applications

Deformed wing virus (DWV) is a major contributor to honey bee colony losses, making effective monitoring essential for apiary management. Traditional DWV detection relies on hazardous RNA extraction followed by RT-qPCR, creating barriers for widespread surveillance. We developed an immunocapture RT-qPCR (IC-RT-PCR) method for screening DWV-A infections by capturing intact virus particles from bee homogenates using immobilized antibodies. Validation demonstrated strong correlation with TRIzol®-based extraction (r = 0.821), with approximately 6 Ct reduced sensitivity, consistent with other published immunocapture methods. Performance was adequate for moderate–high viral loads, while TRIzol® showed superior detection for low-dose infections. Laboratory-produced reverse transcriptase showed equivalent performance to commercial enzymes, providing cost savings. IC-RT-PCR eliminates hazardous chemicals and offers a streamlined workflow for surveillance screening where the safety and cost benefits outweigh the sensitivity reduction. This method provides a practical alternative for large-scale DWV-A surveillance programs, while TRIzol® remains preferable for low-level detection and diagnostic confirmation. Full article

In this study, particles of ground grape seeds were utilized to adsorb phosphate ions from a prepared solution, aiming to reduce phosphate concentration. Through a series of adsorption experiments, the effects of the adsorbent concentration, initial phosphate ion concentration, temperature, and pH on the phosphate ion uptake were studied. The removal efficiency of the phosphate ion decreased from 77 to 61% as a 25 to 45 °C increment in temperature was observed, which indicated the exothermicity in the adsorption process. The phosphate ion movement onto the adsorbent surface that exhibited the highest uptake value favored a neutral reaction environment with a pH value of seven. The experimental results, when compared using different adsorption isotherms, showed that the best fit was exhibited by the Jovanovic isotherm, which was further confirmed owing to its high 0.974 R2 value. Intraparticle diffusion and pseudo second order models describe the kinetics of phosphate adsorption onto grape seeds, with reaction constants of 8.8 × 10−3 (mg/g min) and 0.412 (mg/g·min0.5), respectively. The adsorption was physiosorptive, spontaneous, exothermic, and favorable. Furthermore, the negative entropy with a value of −0.0887 kJ/mol·K revealed reduced randomness in the adsorption process system. Full article

Age-related macular degeneration (AMD) is the leading cause of blindness in developed countries. Predicting its progression is crucial for preventing late-stage AMD, as it is an irreversible retinal disease. Both genetic factors and retinal images are instrumental in diagnosing and predicting AMD progression. Previous studies have explored automated diagnosis using single fundus images and genetic variants, but they often fail to utilize the valuable longitudinal data from multiple visits. Longitudinal retinal images offer a dynamic view of disease progression, yet standard Long Short-Term Memory (LSTM) models assume consistent time intervals between training and testing, limiting their effectiveness in real-world settings. To address this limitation, we propose time-varied Long Short-Term Memory (TV-LSTM), which accommodates irregular time intervals in longitudinal data. Our innovative approach enables the integration of both longitudinal fundus images and AMD-associated genetic variants for more precise progression prediction. Our TV-LSTM model achieved an AUC-ROC of 0.9479 and an AUC-PR of 0.8591 for predicting late AMD within two years, using data from four visits with varying time intervals. Full article

Two highly effective math learning strategies are spaced practice (in which problems of the same kind are distributed across many sessions) and interleaved practice (in which problems of different kinds are mixed rather than blocked). Though these strategies are supported by data, students may be reluctant to use them if they perceive the strategies as ineffective or unpleasant. In Study 1, we surveyed 174 grade 7 math students about the efficacy and likability of spaced and interleaved practice. Spaced practice was often judged likable, but nearly half of students failed to recognize its efficacy. Interleaved practice was judged both unlikable and inefficacious by most students. In Study 2, we further explored perceptions of interleaving in a survey of 233 grade 7 math students. Again, students erroneously judged interleaved practice to have low efficacy. Compared to blocked practice, interleaved practice was judged less effective, less preferable, more time-consuming, and more difficult. This work identifies perceptions that may discourage students from using effective learning strategies and also shows that specific perceptions differ by strategy. Helping students overcome their negative perceptions of spacing and interleaving is an important future direction. Full article

Despite growing recognition of the role that social determinants of health (SDOHs) and health-related social needs (HRSNs) play in chronic disease, limited research has examined their associations with Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD) in population-based studies. This cross-sectional study analyzed 2022 Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System (BRFSS) data from 37 U.S. states and territories to determine how financial hardship, food insecurity, employment loss, healthcare access barriers, and psychosocial stressors influence the prevalence of COPD. Weighted logistic regression models were used to assess the associations between COPD and specific SDOHs and HRSNs. Several individual SDOH and HRSN factors were significantly associated with COPD prevalence, with financial strain emerging as a particularly strong predictor. In models examining specific SDOH factors, economic hardships like inability to afford medical care were strongly linked to higher COPD odds. Psychosocial HRSN risks, such as experiencing mental stress, also showed moderate associations with increased COPD prevalence. These findings suggest that addressing both structural and individual-level social risks may be critical for reducing the prevalence of COPD in populations experiencing financial challenges. A unique line of Holstein cattle has been maintained without selection in Minnesota since 1964. After many generations, unselected cattle produce less milk, but have better reproductive performance and health traits when compared with contemporary cows. Comparisons between this line of unselected Holstein and those under selection provide useful insights that connect selection and complex traits in cattle. Utilizing these unique resources and sequence data, we sought to identify genome changes due to selection. We sequenced 30 unselected and 54 selected Holstein cattle and compared their sequence variants to identify selection signatures. After many years, the two populations showed completely different patterns in their genome-level population structures and linkage disequilibrium. By integrating signals from five different detection methods, we detected consensus selection signatures from at least four methods covering 14,533 SNPs and 155 protein-coding genes. An integrated analysis of selection signatures with gene annotation, pathways, and the cattle QTL database demonstrated that the genomic regions under selection are related to milk productivity, health, and reproductive efficiency. The polygenic nature of these complex traits is evident from hundreds of selection signatures and candidate genes, suggesting that long-term artificial selection has acted on the whole genome rather than a few major genes. In summary, our study identified candidate selection signatures underlying phenotypic differences between unselected and selected Holstein cows and revealed insights into the genetic basis of complex traits in cattle. Per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) have been found worldwide in water, soil, plants, and animals, including humans. A primary route of exposure for humans and animals to PFAS is through the diet and drinking water. Perfluorooctane sulfonate (PFOS), a long-chain PFAS with a relatively long half-life, has been associated with adverse health effects in humans and laboratory animals. There are few toxicokinetic studies on PFOS in domestic livestock raised for human food consumption, which are critical for assessing human food safety. This work aimed to develop a simple daily accumulation model (DAM) for predicting PFOS residues in edible beef cattle muscle. A one-compartment toxicokinetic model in a spreadsheet format was developed using simple calculations to account for daily PFAS into and out of the animal. The DAM was used to simulate two case studies to predict resultant PFOS residues in edible beef cattle tissues. The results demonstrated that the model can reasonably predict PFOS concentrations in beef cattle muscle in a real-world scenario. The DAM was then used to simulate dietary PFOS exposure in beef cattle throughout a typical lifespan in order to derive a generic bioaccumulation factor. The DAM is expected to work well for other PFAS in beef cattle, PFAS in other livestock species raised for meat, and other chemical contaminants with relatively long half-lives. Full article

Poly(N-vinyl-2-pyrrolidone), or PVP, nanogels loaded with gadolinium nitrate (Gd(NO3)3·6H2O) were synthesized by ionizing irradiation, aiming for potential applications in magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). A comprehensive characterization of PVP and Gd aqueous solutions with different VP-monomer-to-Gd ratios was conducted before and after irradiation. The results indicate a complexation between PVP and Gd ions before irradiation. The size of the nanogels exhibited a strong dependence on several factors, including PVP molecular weight, concentration, temperature, and the precise timing of Gd introduction relative to the irradiation process. A quantification study was conducted to investigate the impact of molecular weight, the VP/Gd ratio, and Gd addition before or after the irradiation process on the concentration of free Gd ions. These findings offer valuable insights into optimizing the synthesis of Gd-loaded PVP nanogels for potential applications, highlighting the critical factors that influence their size and stability. Endoreversible engine cycles are a cornerstone of finite-time thermodynamics. We show that endoreversible Stirling engines operating with a one-component plasma as a working medium run at maximal power output with the Curzon–Ahlborn efficiency. As a main result, we elucidate that this is actually a consequence of the fact that the caloric equation of state depends only linearly on temperature and only additively on volume. In particular, neither the exact form of the mechanical equation of state nor the full fundamental relation are required. Thus, our findings immediately generalize to a larger class of working plasmas, far beyond simple ideal gases. In addition, we show that for plasmas described by the photonic equation of state, the efficiency is significantly lower. This is in stark contrast to endoreversible Otto cycles, for which photonic engines have an efficiency larger than the Curzon–Ahlborn efficiency. Full article

The background for this study is the limitations of the conventional approach of using deforestation area multiplied by biomass densities or emission factors. We demonstrated how TanDEM-X and GEDI data can be combined to estimate forest Above Ground Biomass (AGB) change at the national scale for Tanzania. The results can be further recalculated to estimate CO2 emissions and removals from the forest. We used repeated short wavelength, InSAR DEMs from TanDEM-X to derive changes in forest canopy height and combined this with GEDI data to convert such height changes to AGB changes. We estimated AGB change during 2012–2019 to be −2.96 ± 2.44 MT per year. This result cannot be validated, because the true value is unknown. However, we corroborated the results by comparing with other approaches, other datasets, and the results of other studies. In conclusion, TanDEM-X and GEDI can be combined to derive reliable temporal change in AGB at large scales such as a country. An important advantage of the method is that it is not required to have a representative field inventory plot network nor a full coverage DTM. A limitation for applying this method now is the lack of frequent and systematic InSAR elevation data. Full article

Oyster aquaculture in the U.S. faces severe inefficiencies due to the absence of precise path planning tools, resulting in environmental degradation and resource waste. Current dredging techniques lack trajectory planning, often leading to redundant seabed disturbance and suboptimal shell distribution. Existing vessel models—such as the Nomoto or Dubins models—are not designed to map steering inputs directly to spatial coordinates, presenting a research gap in maneuver planning for underactuated boats. This research fills that gap by introducing a novel hybrid vessel kinetics model that integrates the Nomoto model with Dubins motion primitives. Our approach links steering inputs directly to the vessel motion, enabling Cartesian coordinate path generation without relying on intermediate variables like yaw velocity. Field trials in the Chesapeake Bay demonstrate consistent trajectory following performance across varied path complexities, with average offsets of 0.01 m, 1.35 m, and 0.42 m. This work represents a scalable, efficient step toward real-time, constraint-aware automation in oyster harvesting, with broader implications for sustainable aquaculture operations. Full article

To quantify and understand these variations, this study proposes the “Performance Rank Variation Score (PRVS)” to measure the degree of ensemble member’s relative performance variation (the “motion” of members). The PRVS was applied to four real cases (representing the winter, spring, summer, and fall seasons) from the NCEP global ensemble forecast system (GEFS). Many interesting results were observed, which are otherwise hard to elucidate without this new score. At the same time, based on the revealed results, possible ensemble post-processing strategies are discussed for future developments, where a new concept of “transformed ensemble” was demonstrated as an example. Addressing the growing demand for affordable housing requires innovative solutions that strike a balance between cost efficiency and user-specific needs. Mass customization (MC) presents a promising approach that enables the creation of tailored housing solutions on a scale. In this context, this study introduces a model for mass customization of affordable single-family housing units in the city of Teresina, PI, Brazil. Our approach integrates algorithmic–parametric modeling and BIM technologies, facilitating the flow of information and enabling informed decision-making throughout the design process. Since the early design stages, the work has assumed that these integrated technologies provide real-time control over design variables and associated construction data. To develop the model, the method proceeded through the following phases: (1) analysis of the context and definition of the design language; (2) definition of the design process; (3) definition of the cost calculation method and estimation of construction time; (4) definition of the computing model based on the specified technologies; and (5) quantitative and qualitative evaluation of the computational model. As a result, this research aims to contribute to the state-of-the-art by formalizing the knowledge generated through the systematic description of the processes involved in this workflow, with a special focus on the Brazilian context, where the issue of social housing is a critical challenge.
