Spatiotemporal Variations and Drivers of the Ecological Footprint of Water Resources in the Yangtze River Delta

With the acceleration of urbanization in China, water resources have become a key factor restricting regional sustainable development. Current research primarily examines the temporal or spatial variations in the water resources ecological footprint (WREF), with limited emphasis on the integration of both spatial and temporal scales. In this study, we collected the data and information from the 2005–2022 Statistical Yearbook and Water Resources Bulletin of the Yangtze River Delta Urban Agglomeration (YRDUA), and calculated evaluation indicators: WREF, water resources ecological carrying capacity (WRECC), water resources ecological pressure (WREP), and water resources ecological surplus and deficit (WRESD). We primarily analyzed the temporal and spatial variation in the per capita WREF and used the method of Geodetector to explore factors driving its temporal and spatial variation in the YRDUA. The results showed that: (1) From 2005 to 2022, the per capita WREF (total water, agricultural water, and industrial water) of the YRDUA generally showed fluctuating declining trends, while the per capita WREF of domestic water and ecological water showed obvious growth. (2) The per capita WREF and the per capita WRECC were in the order of Jiangsu Province > Anhui Province > Shanghai City > Zhejiang Province. The spatial distribution of the per capita WREF was similar to those of the per capita WRECC, and most areas effectively consume water resources. (3) The explanatory power of the interaction between factors was greater than that of a single factor, indicating that the spatiotemporal variation in the per capita WREF of the YRDUA was affected by the combination of multiple factors and that there were regional differences in the major factors in the case of secondary metropolitan areas. (4) The per capita WREF of YRDUA was affected by natural resources, and the impact of the ecological condition on the per capita WREF increased gradually over time. The impact factors of secondary metropolitan areas also clearly changed over time. Our results showed that the ecological situation of per capita water resources in the YRDUA is generally good, with obvious spatial and temporal differences. Full article

Improving outdoor thermal comfort is a critical objective in urban design, particularly in densely built urban environments. Elevated semi-open spaces—outdoor areas located beneath raised building structures—have been recognized for enhancing pedestrian comfort by improving airflow and shading. However, previous studies primarily focused on warm or temperate climates, leaving a significant research gap regarding their thermal performance in cold climate zones characterized by extreme seasonal variations. Specifically, few studies have investigated how these spaces perform under conditions typical of northern Chinese cities like Xi’an, which is explicitly classified within the Cold Climate Zone according to China’s national standard GB 50176-2016 and experiences both severe summer heat and cold winter conditions. To address this gap, we conducted field measurements and numerical simulations using the ENVI-met model (v5.0) to systematically evaluate the microclimatic performance of elevated ground-floor spaces in Xi’an. Key microclimatic parameters—including air temperature, mean radiant temperature, relative humidity, and wind velocity—were assessed during representative summer and winter conditions. Our findings indicate that the height of the elevated structure significantly affects outdoor thermal comfort, identifying an optimal elevated height range of 3.6–4.3 m to effectively balance summer cooling and winter sheltering needs. These results provide valuable design guidance for architects and planners aiming to enhance outdoor thermal environments in cold climate regions facing distinct seasonal extremes. Full article

Achieving a win-win situation for both economy and ecology is crucial for promoting sustainable social development and shaping new advantages in high-quality developments. This article constructs an ecological economic resilience (EER) analysis framework by integrating both ecological and economic dimensions from a resilience perspective. Based on panel data from 290 cities in China, it explores the dynamic evolution characteristics, regional differences, and convergence trends of EER. The findings indicate that the EER has weakened nationwide and in the four major economic regions, overall tending towards stability. Significant disparities exist in EER, particularly pronounced in the northeast. There is σ convergence in the nation as well as in the northeast and east regions. Additionally, both absolute and conditional β convergence is evident nationwide and in all regions, with conditional convergence occurring at a faster pace. The research findings in this paper provide solid theoretical support for promoting regional coordinated development and constructing a new development paradigm. Full article

Accomplishing China’s national targets of carbon peaking and carbon neutrality necessitates proactive solutions, hinging critically on fundamentally transforming rural construction models. Current construction practices in rural areas are characterized by inefficiency, high resource consumption, and reliance on imported materials. These shortcomings not only jeopardize the attainment of climate objectives, but also hinder equitable development between urban and rural regions. Using the Digital Industrial Park in Yongtai County, Fuzhou City, as a case study, this study focuses on prefabricated public buildings in regions with extreme hot–humid climate, and innovatively integrates BIM (Building Information Modeling)-driven carbon modeling with the Gaussian Two-Step Floating Catchment Area (G2SFCA) method for spatial accessibility assessment to investigate the carbon emissions and economic benefits of prefabricated buildings during the embodied stage, and analyzes the spatial accessibility of prefabricated building material suppliers in Fuzhou City and identifies associated bottlenecks, seeking pathways to promote sustainable rural revitalization. Compared with traditional cast-in-situ buildings, embodied carbon emissions of prefabricated during their materialization phase significantly reduced. This dual-perspective approach ensures that the proposed solutions possess both technical rigor and logistical feasibility. Promoting this model across rural areas sharing similar climatic conditions would advance the construction industry’s progress towards the dual carbon goals. Full article

With deepening global higher education reforms, outcome-based education has emerged as the core paradigm for teaching model innovation. This study investigates the structural dependencies and teaching effectiveness of the Environmental Design curriculum at Hubei Engineering University in medium-sized cities, China, addressing challenges of enrollment decline and market contraction critical for urban sustainability. Using network analysis, we construct curriculum support and contribution networks and course temporal networks to assess structural dependencies and teaching effectiveness, revealing structural patterns and optimizing the OBE-based Environmental Design curriculum to enhance educational quality and student competencies. Analysis reveals computer basic courses as knowledge transmission hubs, creating a course network with a distinct core–periphery structure. Technical course reforms significantly outperform theoretical course reforms in improving student performance metrics, such as higher average scores, better grade distributions, and reduced performance gaps, while innovative practice courses show peripheral isolation patterns, indicating limited connectivity with core curriculum modules, which reduces their educational impact. These findings provide empirical insights for curriculum optimization, supporting urban sustainable development through enhanced professional talent cultivation equipped to address environmental challenges like sustainable design practices and resource-efficient urban planning. Network analysis applications introduce innovative frameworks for curriculum reform strategies. Future research expansion through larger sample validation will support urban sustainable development goals and enhance professional talent cultivation outcomes. Full article

Payments for Watershed services (PWSs) have been emerging as a critical tool for environmental governance in watershed, yet their comparative effectiveness across implementation models has remained poorly understood. Based on a comparative analysis of Eco-Compensation (EC) and Payments for Ecosystem Services (PESs) frameworks, examining both theoretical foundations and implementation practices, this study aims to quantitatively assess and compare the effectiveness of two dominant PWSs models—the EC-like model (Phase I: October 2008–April 2017) and the PESs-like model (Phase II: 2017–December 2021). Using the Liaohe River in China as a case study, utilizing ecosystem service value (ESV) as an indicator and employing the corrected unit-value transfer method, we compare the effectiveness of different PWSs models from October 2008 to December 2021. The results reveal the following: (1) Policy Efficiency: The PESs-like model demonstrated significantly greater effectiveness than the EC-like model, with annual average increases in ESV of 3.23 billion CNY (491 million USD) and 1.79 billion CNY (272 million USD). (2) Functional Drivers: Water regulation (45.1% of total ESV growth) and climate regulation (24.3%) were dominant services, with PESs-like interventions enhancing multifunctionality. (3) Stakeholder Impact: In the PESs-like model, the cities implementing inter-county direct payment showed higher growth efficiency than those without it. The operational efficiency of PWSs increases with the number of participating stakeholders, which explains why the PESs-like model demonstrates higher effectiveness than the EC-like model. Our findings offer empirical evidence and actionable policy implications for designing effective PWSs models across global watershed ecosystems. Full article

With the global economic restructuring and the consequent population mobility, urban shrinkage has become a common phenomenon. The Qinling–Daba Mountains, a zone with a key ecological function in China, have long experienced population decline and functional degradation. Clarifying the dynamics and influencing factors of urban shrinkage plays a vital role in supporting the sustainable development of the region. This study, using permanent resident population growth rates and nighttime light data, classified cities in the region into four spatial patterns: expansion–growth, intensive growth, expansion–shrinkage, and intensive shrinkage. It further examined the spatial characteristics of shrinkage across four periods (2005–2010, 2010–2015, 2015–2020, and 2020–2022). A Geographically and Temporally Weighted Regression (GTWR) model was applied to examine core influencing factors and their spatiotemporal heterogeneity. The results indicated the following: (1) The dominant pattern of urban shrinkage in the Qinling–Daba Mountains shifted from expansion–growth to expansion–shrinkage, highlighting the paradox of population decline alongside continued spatial expansion. (2) Three critical indicators significantly influenced urban shrinkage: the number of students enrolled in general secondary schools (X5), the per capita disposable income of urban residents (X7), and the number of commercial and residential service facilities (X12), with their effects exhibiting significant spatiotemporal heterogeneity. Temporally, X12 was the most influential factor in 2005 and 2010, while in 2015, 2020, and 2022, X5 and X7 became the dominant factors. Spatially, X7 significantly affected both eastern and western areas; X5’s influence was most pronounced in the west; and X12 had the greatest impact in the east. This study explored the patterns and underlying drivers of urban shrinkage in underdeveloped areas, aiming to inform sustainable development practices in regions facing comparable challenges. Studying the impact of digital economy development on marine environmental quality has important theoretical and practical significance for achieving a win–win situation between high-quality economic development and high-level ecological environment protection. This article selects the marine environment of coastal provinces and cities in China from 2011 to 2022 as the research object and uses the entropy method to comprehensively evaluate the quality of marine environment and the level of digital economy. Also, we construct intermediary and threshold effect models to deeply explore the impact mechanism of digital economy development on marine environmental quality. We find that digital economy and marine environmental quality both show a wave-like rising trend, but the comprehensive level is relatively low. The development of the digital economy can effectively improve the level of marine environmental quality, and the digital economy promotes the improvement of marine environmental quality by improving the level of marine economy. The level of economic development and industrial scale has created a threshold effect in the process of promoting the development of marine environmental quality through the digital economy. Therefore, strengthening the digital governance of the marine environment and promoting the industrialization of marine ecology and the ecologicalization of marine industries will help promote the integrated development of the digital economy and marine environment. An in-depth understanding of the spatiotemporal heterogeneity of ecosystem service (ES) trade-offs and synergies, along with their driving factors, is crucial for formulating key ecological restoration strategies and effectively allocating ecological environmental resources in the Hulunbuir region. This study employed an integrated analytical approach combining the InVEST model, ArcGIS geospatial processing, R software environment, and Optimal Parameter Geographical Detector (OPGD). The spatiotemporal patterns and driving factors of the interaction of four major ES functions in Hulunbuir area from 2000 to 2020 were studied. The research findings are as follows: (1) carbon storage (CS) and soil conservation (SC) services in the Hulunbuir region mainly show a distribution pattern of high values in the central and northeast areas, with low values in the west and southeast. Water yield (WY) exhibits a distribution pattern characterized by high values in the central–western transition zone and southeast and low values in the west. For forage supply (FS), the overall pattern is higher in the west and lower in the east. (2) The trade-off relationships between CS and WY, CS and SC, and SC and WY are primarily concentrated in the western part of Hulunbuir, while the synergistic relationships are mainly observed in the central and eastern regions. In contrast, the trade-off relationships between CS and FS, as well as FS and WY, are predominantly located in the central and eastern parts of Hulunbuir, with the intensity of these trade-offs steadily increasing. The trade-off relationship between SC and FS is almost widespread throughout HulunBuir. (3) Fractional vegetation cover, mean annual precipitation, and land use type were the primary drivers affecting ESs. Among these factors, fractional vegetation cover demonstrates the highest explanatory power, with a q-value between 0.6 and 0.9. The slope and population density exhibit relatively weak explanatory power, with q-values ranging from 0.001 to 0.2. (4) The interactions between factors have a greater impact on the inter-relationships of ESs in the Hulunbuir region than individual factors alone. The research findings have facilitated the optimization and sustainable development of regional ES, providing a foundation for ecological conservation and restoration in Hulunbuir. Full article

Rickettsia, Anaplasma, and Ehrlichia species are emerging tick-borne pathogens that cause zoonotic diseases, including rickettsiosis, anaplasmosis, and ehrlichiosis in both human and animal populations. This study aimed to investigate the prevalence of these pathogens in cattle-associated ticks from Ganzhou City, Jiangxi Province, China. Through molecular characterization using multilocus sequence analysis (16S rRNA, gltA, groEL, and ompA genes), we analyzed 392 Rhipicephalus microplus ticks collected from March to September in 2022. The PCR results showed that eight Rickettsiales bacteria were detected, including two species of Rickettsia (51/392, 13.0%), four species of Anaplasma (52/392, 13.3%), and two species of Ehrlichia (70/392, 17.9%). Notably, the circulation of multiple pathogen species within R. microplus populations demonstrates significant microbial diversity in this region. Further consideration and investigation should be given to the possible occurrence of rickettsiosis, ehrlichiosis, and anaplasmosis in humans and domestic animals. Our study provides critical baseline data for developing targeted surveillance strategies and informing public health interventions against tick-borne diseases in southeastern China. Full article

The spatiotemporal evolution of the regional water use structure holds significant theoretical value for optimizing regional water resource allocation, adjusting industrial structures, and achieving sustainable water resource development. Shandong Province, located at the lowest reach of the Yellow River Basin in China, is a major economic, agricultural, and populous province, as well as a region with one of the most prominent water supply–demand imbalances in the country. As a result, exploring how water use patterns change over time and space in this region has become crucial. Using analytical methods like the Lorenz curve, Gini coefficient, cluster analysis, and spatial statistics, we examine shifts in Shandong’s water use structure from 2001 to 2023. We find that while agriculture remained the largest water consumer over this period, industrial, household, and ecological water use steadily increased, signaling a move toward more balanced resource distribution. Across Shandong’s 16 regions (cities), the water use patterns varied considerably, particularly in terms of agriculture, industry, and ecological needs. Among these, agricultural, industrial, and domestic water use were distributed relatively evenly, whereas ecological water use showed greater regional disparities. These results may have the potential to guide policymakers in refining water allocation strategies, improving industrial planning, and boosting the water use efficiency in Shandong and the country ore broadly. The sustainable development of Chinese cities is of long-term significance. Multiple environmental regulatory instruments aim to promote the parallel advancement of environmental conservation and economic growth. This study examines three batches of low-carbon city pilot (LCCP) programs, employing eco-efficiency as the outcome variable. Using conventional difference-in-differences (DID) models, time-varying DID models, and period-by-period propensity score matching DID (PSM-DID) models with city and time fixed effects, we investigate the comprehensive impact of pilot policies on both economic and environmental performance. Eco-efficiency, measured through the Data Envelopment Analysis (DEA) model, exhibits a strong correlation with energy consumption patterns, as carbon emissions and air pollutants predominantly originate from non-clean energy utilization. The analysis reveals that LCCP policies significantly enhance eco-efficiency. These findings demonstrate robustness across placebo tests, endogeneity treatments, and alternative outcome variable specifications. The first and third LCCP batches significantly improve eco-efficiency, whereas the second batch demonstrates no statistically significant effect. Significant impacts emerge in regions where cities hold pilot status while provinces do not; conversely, regions where both cities and provinces participate in pilot programs show no significant effects. Finally, from an energy consumption perspective, policy recommendations are proposed to further enhance eco-efficiency through regulatory instruments. Full article

Against the backdrop of increasingly frequent extreme weather events and heightened market price volatility, investigating the relationship between agricultural insurance and farmers’ livelihood resilience is crucial for ensuring rural socioeconomic stability. This study utilizes field survey data from 1196 households across twelve county-level divisions (three cities and nine counties) from China’s Hainan and Yunnan provinces, specifically in natural rubber-producing regions. Using propensity score matching (PSM), we empirically examine agricultural insurance’s impact on household livelihood resilience. The results demonstrate that agricultural insurance increased the effect on farmers’ livelihood resilience by 1%. This effect is particularly pronounced among recently poverty-alleviated households and large-scale farming operations. Furthermore, the analysis highlights the mediating roles of credit availability, adoption of agricultural production technologies, and production initiative in strengthening insurance’s positive impact. Therefore, policies should be refined and expanded, combining agricultural insurance with credit support and agricultural technology extension to leverage their value and ensure the sustainable development of farm households. It is well-established that principal leadership significantly influences student learning in developed countries, yet much less is known about how leadership practices manifest in complex systems like China’s, where rapid modernization intersects with deep-rooted educational traditions. In particular, Chinese principals face multiple challenges in balancing the implementation of educational reform policies, high parental expectations, and their own educational ideology, all within limited resources. The current study examines these challenges in Shenzhen, a city which typically manifests them through its rapid development. Specifically, we took a phenomenographic approach and interviewed the principals and staff from five prestigious primary schools to extract the key components behind the diverse school leaders’ styles and practices. Results showed that, the Chinese leadership practice model consists of five key components: mission setting, infrastructure reconstruction, teacher development, learning improvement, and educators’ networking. Although the first four components in this model align with established theories in developed countries, networking was identified as a distinctive and critical element for securing resources and fostering collaboration. These findings may broaden the scope of leadership theories and underscore the need to contextualize leadership practices based on local challenges and dynamics. It also offers practical insights for school leaders on navigating challenges to improve teacher and student outcomes. Full article

Legacy and Luxury Effects: Dual Drivers of Tree Diversity Dynamics in Beijing’s Urbanizing Residential Areas (2006–2021)

Numerous studies have demonstrated that in residential areas of Western cities, both luxury and legacy effects significantly shape tree species diversity dynamics. However, the specific mechanisms driving these diversity patterns in China, where urbanization has progressed at an unprecedented pace, remain poorly understood. In this study we selected 20 residential settlements and 7 key socio-economic properties to investigate the change trend of tree diversity (2006–2021) and its socio-economic driving factors in Beijing. Our results demonstrate significant increases in total, native, and exotic tree species richness between 2006 and 2021 (p < 0.05), with average increases of 36%, 26%, and 55%, respectively. Total and exotic tree Shannon-Wiener indices, as well as exotic tree Simpson’s index, were also significantly higher in 2021 (p < 0.05). Housing prices was the dominant driver shaping total and exotic tree diversity, showing significant positive correlations with both metrics. In contrast, native tree diversity exhibited a strong positive association with neighborhood age. Our findings highlight two dominant mechanisms: legacy effect, where older neighborhoods preserve native diversity through historical planting practices, and luxury effect, where affluent communities drive exotic species proliferation through ornamental landscaping initiatives. These findings elucidate the dual dynamics of legacy conservation and luxury-driven cultivation in urban forest development, revealing how historical contingencies and contemporary socioeconomic forces jointly shape tree diversity patterns in urban ecosystems.
