Ship repair is hazardous, often presenting unsuitable working areas and risks due to the ship’s configuration. Welding tasks are particularly dangerous due to the high temperatures generated, high enough to melt the metal in structural elements, bulkheads, linings, and tanks. This study investigates the consequences of temperature distribution during the welding of naval plates and proposes some accident prevention measures. Industry working conditions were reproduced, including the materials, procedures, and tools used, as well as the certified personnel employed. DH 36-grade naval steel, with a composition of C max. 0.18%, Mn 0.90–1.60%, P 0.035%, S 0.04%, Si 0.10–0.50%, Ni max 0.4%, Cr max 0.25%, Mo 0.08%, Cu max 0.35%, Cb (Nb) 0.05%, and V 0.1%, was welded via FCAW-G (Gas-Shielded Flux-Cored Arc Welding), selected for this study because it is one of the most widely practiced in the naval industry. The main sensor used in the experiments was an FLIR model E50 thermographic camera, and thermal waxes were employed. The results for each thickness case are presented in both graphical and tabular form to provide accurate and actionable guidelines, prioritizing safety. After studying the butt jointing of naval plates of various thicknesses (8, 10, and 15 mm), safe distances to maintain were proposed to avoid risks in the most unfavorable cases: 350 mm from the welding seam to avoid burn injuries to unprotected areas of the body and 250 mm from the welding seam to avoid producing flammable gases. These numbers are less accurate but easier to remember, which prevents errors in the face of hazards throughout a long working day. Full article

Research on the WEDM process has traditionally focused on analyzing discharge initiation, material removal mechanisms and surface formation from the perspective of the machined part. However, the same phenomena also affect the tool, namely the wire electrode. A comprehensive understanding of the process requires to examine how these effects impact the electrode itself, particularly in terms of wear. Despite its significance, electrode wear in WEDM is not a topic frequently addressed in the literature. The most common method for evaluating wear involves determining the wire wear ratio (WWR), based on the electrode’s weight before and after machining. However, this approach does not provide insight into changes in the microstructure of the electrode surface. This study presents an alternative approach to interpreting wire electrode wear, using surface roughness parameters in relation to the surface texture of the machined workpiece. Measurements were conducted using an optical focus variation microscope. The influence of selected process parameters—including discharge current Ip, pulse-off time toff and workpiece height h—on selected surface roughness parameters was investigated. The experimental tests were carried out for three alloys representing distinct material groups: 42CrMo4 steel, Inconel 718 nickel alloy, and Ti6Al4V titanium alloy. The results were compared with the roughness parameters of the corresponding machined surfaces. The presented interpretation of the key factors affecting the electrode surface condition after WEDM serves as an initial step in a broader research initiative. It lays the foundation for further studies on wire electrode wear and the development of new wear assessment parameters such as the electrode wear index based on surface texture parameters. A novel stainless steel with high Mn and Mo content (much higher than traditional stainless steel), designated CH241SS, was developed as a potential replacement for Cr-Mo-V alloy steel in the cold forging applications of precision industry. Through carbon reduction in an environmentally friendly manner and a two-stage heat treatment process, the hardness of as-cast CH241 was tailored from HRC 37 to HRC 29, thereby meeting the industrial specifications of cold-forged steel (≤HRC 30). X-ray diffraction analysis of the as-cast microstructure revealed the presence of a small amount of ferrite, martensite, austenite, and alloy carbides. After heat treatment, CH241 exhibited a dual-phase microstructure consisting of ferrite and martensite with dispersed Cr(Ni-Mo) alloy carbides. The CH241 alloy demonstrated excellent high-temperature stability. No noticeable softening occurred after 72 h for the second-stage heat treatment. Based on the mechanical and room-temperature tensile fatigue properties of CH241-F (forging material) and CH241-ST (soft-tough heat treatment), it was demonstrated that the CH241 stainless steel was superior to the traditional stainless steel 4xx in terms of strength and fatigue life. Therefore, CH241 stainless steel can be introduced into cold forging and can be used in precision fatigue application. The relevant data include composition design and heat treatment properties. This study is an important milestone in assisting the upgrading of the vehicle and aerospace industries. Full article

The operational efficiency of the main steam pipelines at thermal power plants is reduced due to several factors, including operating temperature, pressure, service life, and the frequency of process shutdowns, which contribute to the degradation of heat-resistant steels. The study aims to identify the features of changes in the sizes of grains and carbides along their boundaries, as well as mechanical properties (hardness, strength, plasticity and fracture toughness) along the wall thickness of both pipes in the initial state and after operation with block shutdowns. Preliminary electrolytic hydrogenation of specimens (before tensile tests in air) showed even more clearly the negative consequences of operational degradation of steel. The degradation of steel was also assessed using fracture toughness (JIC). The value of JIC for operated steel with a smaller number of shutdowns decreased by 32–33%, whereas with a larger number of shutdowns, its decrease in the vicinity of the outer and inner surfaces of the pipe reached 65 and 61%, respectively. Fractographic signs of more intense degradation of steel after a greater number of shutdowns were manifested at the stage of spontaneous fracture of specimens by changing the mechanism from transgranular cleavage to intergranular, which indicated a decrease in the cohesive strength of grain boundaries. Hot work die steel is an alloy steel with good high-temperature performance, which is widely used in mechanical manufacturing, aerospace, and other fields. During the working process of hot working mold steel, it is subjected to high temperature, wear, and other effects, which can lead to a decrease in the surface hardness of the mold, accelerate surface damage, shorten the service life, and reduce the quality of the workpiece. In order to improve the wear resistance of the mold, this paper conducts two surface treatments, chrome plating and nitriding, on the surface of hot work mold steel, and compares the high-temperature wear behavior of the materials after the two surface treatments. The results indicate that the hot work die steel obtained higher surface hardness and wear resistance after nitriding surface modification. After nitriding treatment, the surface of hot work die steel contains ε phase (Fe2–3N), which improves its surface hardness and wear resistance, thus exhibiting better surface hardness and wear resistance than the chrome-plated sample. In this study, the high-temperature wear behavior of hot work die steel after two kinds of surface strengthening treatments was deeply discussed, and the high-temperature wear mechanism of steel after surface strengthening was revealed. It provides a theoretical basis and experimental basis for the surface modification of hot working die steel, and also provides new ideas and methods for improving the service life and workpiece quality of hot working die steel in industrial production. In this study, the advantages and disadvantages of high-temperature wear resistance of hot working die steel after chromium plating and nitriding were systematically compared for the first time, which provided a scientific basis for the selection of surface strengthening technology of hot working die steel and had important academic value and practical application significance. During the service life of automotive panel stamping dies, the surface is often subjected to high loads and repeated friction, resulting in excessive wear. This leads to die failure, reduced machining accuracy, and decreased production efficiency. To enhance the anti-friction and wear-resistant performance of die steel surfaces, this study introduces the concept of biomimetic engineering in surface science. By mimicking microstructural configurations found in nature with outstanding wear resistance, biomimetic functional surfaces were designed and fabricated. Specifically, quadrilateral dimples inspired by the back of dung beetles, pentagonal scales from armadillo skin, and hexagonal scales from the belly of desert vipers were selected as biological prototypes. These surface textures were fabricated on Cr12MoV die steel using high-speed ball-end milling. Finite element simulations and dry sliding wear tests were conducted to systematically investigate the tribological behavior of surfaces with different dimple geometries. The results showed that the quadrilateral dimple surface derived from the dung beetle exhibited the best performance in reducing friction and wear. Furthermore, the milling parameters for this surface were optimized using response surface methodology. After optimization, the friction coefficient was reduced by 21.3%, and the wear volume decreased by 38.6% compared to a smooth surface. This study confirms the feasibility of fabricating biomimetic functional surfaces via high-speed ball-end milling and establishes an integrated surface engineering approach combining biomimetic design, efficient manufacturing, and parameter optimization. The results provide both theoretical and methodological support for improving the service life and surface performance of large automotive panel dies. Full article

This study investigates the effects of B4C content (2.5, 5, 7.5, and 10 wt.%) on the microstructure and wear resistance of laser cladding 316 stainless steel coatings on a 2Cr12MoV steel substrate. The coating was prepared by laser cladding technology. The phase composition, microstructure evolution, microhardness, and tribological properties of the coating were analyzed. The results show that the decomposition of B4C particles is complete, and the phase composition of the coating includes Austenite, Fe23 (B3C3), Cr23 (B1.5C4.5), and a Fe-Ni solid solution. The increase in B4C content significantly increased the microhardness of the material from 206 HV0.2 (substrate) to 829 HV0.2 (10 wt.% B4C) by 4.02 times. Wear resistance also improved, with the 10 wt.% coating exhibiting the lowest wear rate (10 × 10−8 mm3/N·m) due to fine-grained and dispersion strengthening mechanisms. However, excessive B4C (10 wt.%) induced cracks from increased brittleness, resulting in higher friction coefficients. The wear mechanism consists of fatigue wear, adhesive wear, and oxidative wear, and the degree of wear decreases with the increase in B4C content. This work demonstrates that the addition of B4C effectively improves the hardness and wear resistance of 316 stainless steel coatings, providing practical insights into surface engineering in high wear applications. With the aim of improving the machined surface quality of die steel, this paper takes Cr12MoV quenched die steel as the research object and proposes a ball head milling surface morphology prediction model that comprehensively considers influencing factors, including tool vibration, eccentricity, as well as deformation. By setting key parameters, such as line spacing, feed per tooth, cutting depth, and phase difference, the system analyzed the influence of each parameter on the residual height and surface roughness of the machined surface. High-speed milling experiments were conducted, and the surface morphology of the samples was observed and measured under a microscope. The simulation results show good agreement with the experimental data, with errors within 7%~15%, proving the accuracy of the model. This study can provide theoretical support and methodological guidance for surface quality control and processing parameter optimization in complex mold surface machining. Full article

9Cr18MoV stainless steel is widely employed in cutting-tool applications owing to its exceptional hardness and corrosion resistance. In this study, we systematically optimized the wire electrical discharge machining (WEDM) process parameters for 9Cr18MoV stainless steel through an L16 (44) orthogonal experimental design. The key parameters investigated include pulse width (Ton), pulse interval (Toff), peak current (IP), and wire feed speed (WS), with cutting efficiency (CE) and surface roughness (Ra) serving as the primary optimization objectives. A signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) analysis was applied to assess the effects of the individual parameters and derive single-objective optimal configurations. Subsequently, grey relational analysis (GRA) integrated with analytic hierarchy process (AHP)-based weighting was employed to establish a multi-objective optimal parameter set, which was experimentally validated. The results reveal that the optimal multi-objective performance was attained at Ton = 28 μs, Toff = 3 μs, IP = 9 A, and WS = level 3. SEM characterization confirmed that this parameter combination yields a more uniform surface morphology, with diminished oxidation and molten debris deposition, thereby significantly enhancing surface integrity. The adoption of this optimized parameter set not only ensures superior machining efficiency but also results in improved surface quality. Full article

The heat treatment residual stress of 8Cr4Mo4V steel bearings seriously affects the contact fatigue life. The micro stress concentration at the carbide interface leads to the initiation of micro cracks. Therefore, in this paper, the systematic analysis of heat treatment residual stress of 8Cr4Mo4V steel is conducted. FEA was used to analyze the residual stress of type I after heat treatment process. Based on numerical simulation and EBSD results, CPFEM was carried out to study the distribution of type II residual stress. Using high-resolution characterization results, GPA was performed to study type III residual stress caused by crystal defects. The FEA results indicate that thermal strain and phase transformation strain dominate the macroscopic stress change before and after martensitic transformation. During the first tempering process, the phase transformation leads to the release of quenching residual stress. The large stress concentration at the carbide interface is revealed by CPFEM. High-resolution characterization of coherent interface between carbide and matrix reveals that the micro residual strain at this interface is small. Through a systematic analysis of the residual stress of 8Cr4Mo4V steel, a basis is provided for modifying the macroscopic and microscopic residual stress of heat treatment to improve the bearing performance. A total of 0.3%C-Cr-Mo-V steel, a high-strength alloy steel widely used in rocket motor housings, suspension systems in high-performance vehicles, etc., is noted due to its high strength-to-weight ratio. However, its high carbon equivalent (CE > 1%) makes it challenging to weld, as it is prone to brittle martensitic formation, which increases the risk of cracking and embrittlement. The present paper focuses on enhancing the microstructure and mechanical properties of 0.3% C-Cr-Mo-V steel by gas tungsten arc welded (GTAW) joints, utilizing post-weld heat treatment and cooling strategies (PWHTCS). A systematic experimental approach was employed to ensure a defect-free weld through dye penetrant testing (DPT) and X-ray radiography techniques. Subsequently, test specimens were extracted from the welded sections and subjected to PWHT protocols, including hardening, tempering, and rapid quenching using air and oil cooling (AC and OC, respectively) mediums. Results show that OC has enhanced tensile strength and hardness while simultaneously maintaining and improving ductility, ensuring a well-balanced combination of strength and toughness. Fractography analysis revealed ductile fracture in AC samples, whereas OC weldments exhibited a mixed ductile–brittle fracture mode. Thus, the findings demonstrate the critical role of PWHTCS, with OC, as an effective method for achieving enhanced mechanical performance and microstructural stability in high-integrity applications. In this paper, the wear characteristics of 20GrNi2MoV bearing steel under different working conditions were investigated by finite element simulation considering microscopic grain size and pin-on-disk friction experiments, and the wear mechanism during friction and wear was explained, along with a finite element model that took initial grain size and material organization into account to predict the process of subsurface crack initiation during friction. The results show that high-speed and large-load conditions have a significant effect on the wear characteristics of dry friction of pinned disks. The effect of high speed and load will greatly reduce the time of the grinding stage, and the friction coefficient can quickly reach a stable state; the roughness of the surface of the friction pair increases with the increase in load, but the roughness shows a tendency to first increase and then decrease with the increase in sliding speed. Martensitic phase transformation occurs in the friction subsurface, and the decrease in Mn element content is one of the causes of cracks on the subsurface of the material; with the increase in load and speed, the damage form of the sample disk material is changed from abrasive wear and adhesive wear to the mixture of three kinds of wear: abrasive wear, adhesive wear, and cracks. In addition, the simulation of crack initiation and growth agrees well with the experiment, which proves the accuracy of crack prediction. This study provides a reference for crack initiation prediction in the study of pinned disk friction vises. Full article

Metallic implants in radiotherapy patients alter dose distributions due to their high density and unique composition, potentially compromising treatment precision. This study evaluates the effects of three metallic materials, Co-Cr-Mo alloy, titanium alloy, and stainless steel, on dose distribution across four radiotherapy modalities: 6 MV photons, 15 MeV electrons, 170 MeV protons, and very-high-energy electrons (100 and 150 MeV). Monte Carlo simulations in the TOol for PArticle Simulations Monte Carlo (TOPAS MC) generated percentage depth dose curves and dose profiles, with dosage data standardized to a reference point and uncertainties addressed via error propagation. Results revealed that the Co-Cr-Mo alloy produced the most significant alterations. For instance, at 100 MeV Very High Electron Energy (VHEE), the dose at a 15 cm depth was 34.57% lower than in water; 6 MV photons showed a 15.16% reduction, and the proton Bragg peak shifted 9.5 cm closer to the source. These pronounced changes along the central beam axis affected dose distributions anterior and posterior to the metal. A prostate cancer simulation further demonstrated considerable dose reduction with deeply embedded metallic implants. The findings underscore the critical impact of implant properties on radiotherapy dose distributions, emphasizing the need to integrate these factors into clinical protocols to improve dosimetric accuracy and treatment safety. Al-Cr-N ternary coatings were deposited on the surface of Cr12MoV alloy tool steel via multiarc ion plating technology. The microstructure and mechanical and tribological properties of these coatings were systematically characterized, analyzed, and compared with those of the uncoated substrate specimens. The results indicated that under optimal conditions, Al70Cr30 alloy was effectively ionized, leading to the formation of AlN and CrN phases between Al ions, Cr ions, and nitrogen atoms. These phases were uniformly distributed within the coating, forming an ordered lattice structure. At a bias voltage of −60 V, the deposited Al-Cr-N coating exhibited a uniform and smooth morphology. However, because of the inherent characteristics of arc deposition, droplets and craters were observed on the coating surface as a result of sputtering and back-sputtering effects. The average nanohardness of the Al-Cr-N ternary coating reached 23.8 ± 3.1 GPa, while the coefficient of friction stabilized at approximately 0.7 during the wear process, compared with around 0.8 for the uncoated Cr12MoV substrate. Compared with the uncoated Cr12MoV substrate, the Al-Cr-N coating demonstrated significantly enhanced hardness and wear resistance, thereby effectively improving the performance of Cr12MoV alloy tool steel. Aging Behavior of 10CrNi2Mo3Cu2V Maraging Alloy: Clustering, Precipitation, and Strengthening

The high-temperature performance of 10CrNi2Mo3Cu2V steel is critically governed by the distribution of Cu-rich phases. This study systematically investigated the evolution of solute redistribution, Cu-rich phase precipitation, microstructural transformations, and mechanical properties in 10CrNi2Mo3Cu2V alloy under varying aging temperatures. Advanced characterization techniques, including atom probe tomography (APT) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM), were employed to analyze microstructural features and phase formation in both as-built and heat-treated specimens. The key findings reveal that copper atom segregation initiates at a tempering temperature of 350 °C. Upon increasing the temperature to 450 °C, extensive precipitation of nanoscale copper clusters is observed. Temperatures exceeding 450 °C trigger the formation of ε-Cu phases, which undergo subsequent coarsening. Notably, these copper clusters and Cu-rich precipitates act as dislocation pinning sites, promoting crack nucleation and propagation, thereby markedly degrading the alloy’s impact energy absorption capacity. The critical diameter for Orowan mechanism-governed strengthening by Cu-rich phases is determined to be ~6 nm, while the average diameter of matrix-penetrating Cu-rich particles is approximately 1.46 nm. Quantitative analysis demonstrated that the combined contributions of the Orowan bypass mechanism and particle-cutting mechanism yield a strength enhancement of ~219 MPa, which exhibits excellent agreement with experimentally measured strength increments. These results provide critical insights into the interplay between microstructural evolution and mechanical degradation in precipitation-strengthened steels under thermal exposure. Full article
