For the first time, essential oils (EOs) from the leaves and flowers of Lantana camara L., grown in Loja, Ecuador, have been isolated by steam distillation and analyzed. The oil yields from the extractions were 0.021 and 0.005% for the leaves and flowers, respectively. A compositional analysis using gas chromatography revealed the presence of EOs, comprising approximately 97.98% of the extract from the leaves and 74.58% of the extract from the flowers. The chemical characterization of these EOs indicated sesquiterpenic profiles. The most representative constituents of the essential oils from the flowers were γ-Curcumene (21.79%), (E, E)-α-Farnesene (20.07%), and α-Zingiberene (13.38%), while the EOs from the leaves were characterized by the abundant presence of γ-Curcumene (21.87%), (E)-Nerolidol (15.09%), and cis-Muurola-4(14),5-diene (12.65%). Furthermore, the acaricidal efficacy of the EOs from the leaves of L. camara was tested by a dip test with adult ticks, resulting in acaricidal efficacy at concentrations of 10%, demonstrating the useful properties of these EOs. Compositional Variability of Essential Oils and Their Bioactivity in Native and Invasive Erigeron Species

To date, various species of Erigeron genus have been used both in the ethnopharmacology of numerous nations across the world and in contemporary herbal practices. The objective of this study is to revise the phytochemical data on the essential oils (EOs) of various fleabanes species and to evaluate the variability of their biological activities. Up to June 2025, this review provides an updated overview of 105 literature sources (published during last 25 years) related to 14 Erigeron sp. (native, naturalized, or invasive) which have been investigated extensively and are of the greatest significance. It summarizes the compositional variability of the EOs and their pharmacological and toxic effects, such as anti-inflammatory, anticancer, antiproliferative, skin regeneration, antioxidant, antifungal, antibacterial, insecticidal, larvicidal, repellent, and allelopathic activity. The EOs of each Erigeron species were characterized, and a chemical structure of 43 major constituents is presented herein. The most characteristic and prevalent compounds were found to be limonene, δ-3-carene, matricaria ester, lachnophyllum ester, germacrene D, β-caryophyllene, β-farnesene, α-bergamotene, allo-aromadendrene, etc., in the EOs from the E. acris, E. annuus, E. bonariensis, E. canadensis, E. floribundus E. mucronatus, and E. speciosus plants. Major constituents, such as borneol, bornyl acetate, modhephen-8-β-ol, cis-arteannuic alcohol, β-caryophyllene, and τ-cadinol, were found in the oils of E. graveolens (Inula graveolens). A paucity of data concerning E. incanus EOs was revealed, with the prevalence of 3-hydroxy-4-methoxy cinammic acid and thymol acetate noted in the oils. The EOs from E. multiradiatus and E. sublyratus were comprised mainly of matricaria and lachnophyllum esters. The available data on EOs of E. ramosus is limited, but the main constituents are known to be α-humulene, 1,8-cineole, eugenol, and globulol. The EOs containing appreciable amounts of matricaria and lachnophyllum esters exhibited strong anticancer, anti-inflammatory, antimicrobial, larvicidal, and repellent activities. Repellence is also related to borneol, bornyl acetate, caryophyllene derivatives, τ-cadinol, modhephen-8-β-ol, and cis-arteannuic alcohol. Cytotoxicity was determined due to the presence of limonene, δ-3-carene, α- and β-farnesene, (E)-β-ocimene, ledene oxide, sesquiphellandrene, and dendrolasin in the fleabanes EOs. Skin regeneration and antifungal properties were related to germacrene D; and anti-inflammatory effects were determined due to high amounts of limonene (E)-β-ocimene, lachnophyllum ester, and germacrene D. The antimicrobial properties of the oils were conditioned by appreciable quantities of limonene, β-pinene, 1,8-cineole, carvacrol, thymol acetae, β-eudesmol, 2,6,7,7α-tetrahydro-1,5-dimethyl-1H-indene-3-carboxaldehyde, caryophyllene and its oxide, allo-aromadendrene, α-humulene, farnesene, carvacrol, and eugenol. In this study, we analyzed the essential oils (EOs) extracted by steam distillation from the leaves and flowers of Parthenium hysterophorus L., grown in three different locations in southern Ecuador: Espíndola (ESP), Loja (LOJ) and Quilanga (QUI). Approximately 97.45%, 98.27% and 95.99% of the oil constituents were identified using gas chromatography–mass spectrometry (GC-MS) and gas chromatography–flame ionization detection (GC-FID). Sesquiterpene hydrocarbons were predominant in the EOs. The most representative constituents of the sample from ESP were germacrene D (35.08%), myrcene (11.32%), (E)-β-ocimene (10.21%), (E)-caryophyllene (7.90%), germacra-4(15),5,10(14)-trien-1-α-ol (5.18%) and (E, E)-α-farnesene (4.99%), with an AChE IC50 of 14.78 and with 16.38 and 93.16 µg/mL from ABTS and DPPH, respectively. The EOs from LOJ were characterized by the abundant presence of germacrene D (28.30%), myrcene (13.95%), (E)-β-ocimene (10.51%) and isolongifolan-7-α-ol (8.26%), with an AChE IC50 of 16.65 and with 36.18 and 158.43 µg/mL from ABTS and DPPH, respectively. Finally, the EOs from QUI contained germacrene D (32.20%), myrcene (13.36%), (E)-β-ocimene (8.54%), (E, E)-α-farnesene (6.77%), germacra-4(15),5,10(14)-trien-1-α-ol (5.69%) and (E)-caryophyllene (5.37%), with an AChE IC50 of 10.69 and with 14.50 and 92.98 µg/mL from ABTS and DPPH, respectively. This study identifies chemotypic variation in P. hysterophorus collected from different locations and, for the first time, the AChE inhibitor was evaluated. These findings provide a scientific basis for the clinical application of P. hysterophorus EOs in the future treatment of Alzheimer’s disease. Full article

In Africa, the current harmful maize pest is Spodoptera frugiperda. Its attack can be severe and cause total economic losses. Spodoptera eridania is another species of the same genus, detected a few months after S. frugiperda’s outbreaks in West and Central Africa. Though both species share a range of host plants, socioeconomic studies are yet to provide specific figures on the potential impacts of S. eridania. The high and inappropriate application of insecticides to control Spodoptera species has negative effects on the environmental elements’ health. Semiochemical tools are increasingly exploited to design alternative pest management strategies. We hypothesize that host plants release components used by the pests and a shared parasitoid to locate the host. To verify that hypothesis, we conducted behavioral assays and GC-MS analyses to identify the potential chemical signals involved in the communications of the moths and their shared parasitoid C. icipe. The results showed that healthy and herbivory-induced maize and amaranth produced some chemical compounds including α-pinene, limonene, isopentyl acetate, (Z)-beta-farnesene, and methyl dodecanoate, which prospects their potential use in alternative pest management strategies for recruiting C. icipe to control these pests. Further work will focus on field validation to develop an alternative control strategy for the moths. Full article

Aroma is an important processing and consumption quality trait of fruits and vegetables, and terpenes produced from the terpenoid metabolic pathway are a critical component of chili fruit flavor. This pathway involves the participation of at least eighteen enzymes, such as AACT, HMGS, HMGR, MVK, PMK, MVD, FPPS, GGPPS, DXS, DXR, MCT, CMK, MECPS, HDS, HDR, GPPS, IDI, and TPS. In this study, the genome wide information, expression characteristics, and relationship with terpenoids of terpenoid pathway genes are analyzed in C. annuum. The results showed that C. annuum has sixty-seven genes related to terpene metabolic pathways. Non-targeted metabolomics studies found that the content of aromatic terpenoids α-calacorene, α-cubene, and cis-β-farnesene increased with fruit development in HDL fruits, while linalool and nerolidol were much higher in GLD608. Correlation analyses between qRT-PCR and metabolome data showed that the expression levels of CaHMGS-3, CaMVD-1, CaCMK-1, and CaGGPPS-2 were positively correlated with the content of linalool, a flavor monoterpene alcohol. CaMECPS-1 was positively correlated with cis-β-farnesene, and there was also a significant positive regulatory relationship between CaTPS-5 and nerolidol relationship. In conclusion, the present study provides genetic resources for further studies on the gene regulatory mechanisms of flavor synthesis and terpenoid metabolic pathways in chili. Full article

Hop (Humulus lupulus L.) is a crucial ingredient in beer, valued for its bitter acids and essential oils. Traditionally cultivated in temperate regions, hop production faces challenges from climate change, necessitating the exploration of new growing areas. This study evaluated the chemical quality of hop varieties grown in Brazil’s subtropical conditions to assess their suitability for brewing. Seven hop varieties (Cascade, Centennial, Columbus, Chinook, Comet, Fuggle, and Nugget) were analyzed for total α- and β-acids and essential oil composition. Bitter acids were quantified by spectrophotometric analysis, and volatile compounds were identified using gas chromatography coupled to mass spectrometry (GC-MS). Comet exhibited the highest a-acid level (10.54%), indicating strong bittering potential. Essential oil analysis revealed β-myrcene, (E)-caryophyllene, and α-humulene as predominant compounds. Centennial showed a distinct (E)-β-farnesene profile, a characteristic of noble hops. All varieties contained α- and β-selinene, suggesting a common metabolic pattern. The results indicate that Brazil has the potential to produce high-quality hops with suitable chemical profiles for brewing. As traditional hop-growing regions face climate-related challenges, hops cultivated in Brazil may offer a viable alternative for achieving the desired chemical composition required by the brewing industry. Hop is a key ingredient in beer production, and drying it allows it to be stored before use. Unfortunately, postharvest drying techniques can negatively affect hop quality. In this study, we compared drying using a hot stove (H), freeze-drying (F), and ventilated at room temperature (VRT) drying, focusing on the chemical quality and essential oil composition. To achieve 80% water removal, F and H took two days, while VRT took five days. F and H preserved a high content of total chlorophyll (F 81.89 g/kg dm; H 82.70 g/kg dm) and carotenoids (F 54.02 g/kg dm; H 54.71 g/kg dm). The hop storage index (HSI) increased with all drying techniques, but especially in F and H. The lowest amount of polyphenols was found in the H sample (348.48 g/kg dm), while the highest content was found in VRT (631.11 g/kg dm). Freeze-drying gave the best results, especially in relation to the amount of polyphenols and antioxidant power of the product. Regarding essential oils, in the class of sesquiterpene hydrocarbons, we found α-humulene (F 24.0%; VRT 24.7%; H 25.6%), β-caryophyllene (F 10.5%; VRT 9.4%; H 11.1%), and β-farnesene (F 6.8%; VRT 6.0%; H 7.4%). The total monoterpene hydrocarbon amount increased in the VRT sample. Thus, freeze-drying emerges as an alternative technique to the hot stove; however, the cost is high. Instead, drying at ventilated room temperature represents a sustainable and valid technique for preserving the aromatic characteristics and polyphenols of the product. Full article

Apart from the importance of bittering acids in the brewing sector, hops also produce terpene-rich essential oils, recognised for their therapeutic benefits. Agri-processing practices of this crop in South Africa produce tonnes of discarded (waste) plant material that could still contain sufficient bioactive compounds to justify upcycling. This research aimed to determine the chemical composition of steam distilled essential oils from fresh hop plant material destined for disposal. Essential oils from eight hop varieties unique to South Africa were produced on industrial scale using steam distillation. Chemical profiling was performed using GC-FID and MS. A total of 208 compounds were identified and oil consisted largely of terpenes (89.04 ± 1.89%) as well as aliphatic esters and -ketones (6.1 ± 1.15%). Myrcene (27.8–48.15%) was the most abundant monoterpene and α-humulene (19.52–24.98%), β-caryophyllene (8.47–13.73%) and β-farnesene (2.08–7.57%) constituted the majority of the sesquiterpenes fraction. Experimental variety XJA2/436 had the highest myrcene fraction (48.15%) and its chemical composition was markedly different from the other varieties. The major compounds in African Queen hop oil were methyl (4Z) decanoate (0.74%), 2-tridecanone (0.77%) and β-farnesene (7.57%). Southern Dawn hop oil contained the highest fractions of 2-undecanone (1.21%) and α-humulene (24.89%) and Southern Passion hop oil contained the highest β-caryophyllene fraction (13.73%). These findings established that fresh hop vegetative biomass shows promise to be transformed into a valuable resource. Full article

Lathyrus odoratus L., commonly known as sweet pea, is a plant with a distinctive aroma that can develop in various habitats. An analysis of the aromatic profile of the species was conducted using the HS-SPME (solid-phase microextraction headspace) technique. This study aimed to explore the composition of and variation in the floral scent emissions of L. odorathus. The floral scents from fresh flowers were collected over different months and analyzed using gas chromatography coupled with mass spectrometry on apolar and polar stationary phase columns. In the apolar column, the majority compounds included linalool (19.27–5.79%), α-trans-bergamotene (29.4–14.21%), and phenyl ethyl alcohol (30.01–1.56%), while on the polar column, the predominant compounds included myrcene (13.25%), (E,E)-α-farnesene (26.33–8.16%), α-trans-bergamotene (42.09–24.82%), and others. This investigation was complemented by enantioselective analysis using a chiral phase based in cyclodextrins, which revealed the presence of (1R)-(+)-α-pinene, (S)-(−)-limonene, (R)-(+)-germacrene D, and (R)-(E)-nerolidol as enantiomerically pure components and linalool as a racemic mixture. Notably, the principal component analysis (PCA) and heatmap revealed variations among the chemical compounds collected at different harvest times. This demonstrates that temporal factors indeed impact chemical compound production. Furthermore, research on the aromatic properties of flowers provides a theoretical basis for studying and improving the components of their scent. Full article

The well-known hop variety, Saaz, which gives the Pilsner lager beer its characteristic hop aroma, may be threatened by climate change in the future. Therefore, new Saaz-related hop varieties, including Saaz Late, Saaz Brilliant, Saaz Comfort, and Saaz Shine, were recently bred. A comparison study was carried out to evaluate whether these varieties are acceptable for traditional lagers. For this purpose, sensorial and chemical analyses of hops and related beers, namely, an analysis of hop resins and oils, were performed. Sensory profiles of Saaz varieties are very similar (fine, hoppy aroma; floral; herbal), except for Saaz Comfort, which has a slightly higher aroma intensity, and Saaz Shine, which has the most noticeable fruity scent, with traces of citrus. The chemical profiles are also very similar, with α-humulene, β-pinene, (E)-β-farnesene, β-caryophyllene, and myrcene being the most abundant. Decoction mashing and kettle hopping technology with bottom fermentation show that the compared varieties result in very similar lager beers with hoppy, floral, herbal, fruity, and spicy aromas. Typical hop oils include farnesol, linalool, methyl geranate, β-pinene, and limonene. The high concentration of farnesol in beer correlates with the concentrations of (E)-β-farnesene and farnesol in hops. New Saaz varieties are widely used to produce Pilsner lager without affecting the traditional sensory aroma of this widespread style. Varieties have a higher yield of approximately 25% and bitter acid concentrations of approximately 15%, with Saaz Comfort comprising approximately 100%. Furthermore, the concentration of hop oils is approximately 40% higher in Saaz Shine than a traditional Saaz variety. Moreover, Saaz Shine and Saaz Comfort have very good resistance to drought, which is an important property from a climate change perspective. Full article

The nutritional and aromatic characterization of two undervalued types of Sorbus domestica fruits, differentiated by their apple and pear shapes, has been carried out. Official Association of Analytical Communities methods have been used for proximate composition and mineral analysis determinations, and gas chromatography was used for the analysis of volatile components in three states of ripeness and compared with the aromas of fresh apple and quince jam. S. domestica fruits are a good source of K, Ca, Fe, and fiber and are an important source of antioxidants in the human diet. S. domestica fruits have proven to be very distinctive in the aromatic fraction. 1-hexanol, hexyl 1,3-octanediol, phenylacetaldehyde, nonanal, hexanal, and α-farnesene are the most potent odor compounds in the overripening stage of the fruits. The aroma profiles of immature S. domestica fruits were dominated by aldehydes, while in the overripe stage, the fruit accumulated abundant esters, alcohols, and sesquiterpenoids. S. domestica fruits could be introduced as an alternative to seasonal fruit consumption and could generate sustainable production and consumption alternatives while recovering cultural and food heritage. The volatile components emitted by fresh aromatic flowers of Plumeria rubra L., harvested in southern Ecuador during three different months were determined to evaluate the fluctuation of secondary metabolites. The volatile compounds were analyzed using headspace solid-phase microextraction (HS-SPME) followed by gas chromatography coupled to mass spectrometry (GC–MS) and a flame ionization detector (GC–FID) using two types of columns: a non-polar (DB-5ms) and polar column (HP-INNOWax). The principal chemical groups were hydrocarbon sesquiterpenes (43.5%; 40.0%), oxygenated sesquiterpenes (23.4%; 26.4%), oxygenated monoterpenes (14.0%; 11.2%), and hydrocarbon monoterpenes (12.7%; 9.3%). The most representative constituents were (E,E)-α-Farnesene (40.9–41.2%; 38.5–50.6%), (E)-nerolidol (21.4–32.6%; 23.2–33.0%), (E)-β-ocimene (4.2–12.5%; 4.5–9.1%), (Z)-dihydro-apofarnesol (6.5–9.9%; 7.6–8.6%), linalool (5.6–8.3%; 3.3–7.8%), and perillene (3.1–5.9%; 3.0–3.2%) in DB-5ms and HP-INNOWax, respectively. Finally, we reported for the first time the enantiomeric distribution of P. rubra flowers, where the enantiomers (1R,5R)-(+)-α-pinene, (S)-(−)-limonene, (S)-(+)-Linalool, and (1S,2R,6R,7R,8R)-(+)-α-copaene were present as enantiomerically pure substances, whereas (S)-(+)-(E)-Nerolidol and (R)-(+)-(E)-Nerolidol were observed as scalemic mixtures. This study provides the first comprehensive and comparative aroma profile of Plumeria rubra cultivated in southern Ecuador and gave us a clue to the variability of P. rubra chemotypes depending on the harvesting time, which could be used for future quality control or applications in phytopharmaceutical and food industries. Volatile oils or essential oils (EOs) were extracted from three V. sebifera samples (labeled as A, B, and C) in September 2018 and February 2019; the extraction process involved hydrodistillation of the leaves. The chemical compositions of the EOs were analyzed using gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC/MS). The volatile components were identified by comparing their retention indices and mass spectra with standard substances documented in the literature (ADAMS). The antioxidant activity of the EOs was evaluated using 2, 2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH), while their toxicity was assessed using Artemia salina Leach. Molecular docking was utilized to examine the interaction between the major constituents of V. sebifera EO and acetylcholinesterase (AChE), a molecular target linked to toxicity in A. salina models. The EO obtained from specimen A, collected in September 2018, was characterized by being primarily composed of (E,E)-α-farnesene (47.57%), (E)-caryophyllene (12.26%), and α-pinene (6.93%). Conversely, the EO from specimen A, collected in February 2019, was predominantly composed of (E,E)-α-farnesene (42.82%), (E)-caryophyllene (16.02%), and bicyclogermacrene (8.85%), the EO from specimen B, collected in September 2018, primarily contained (E,E)-α-farnesene (47.65%), (E)-caryophyllene (19.67%), and α-pinene (11.95%), and the EO from the leaves collected in February 2019 was characterized by (E,E)-α-farnesene (23.57%), (E)-caryophyllene (19.34%), and germacrene D (7.33%). The EO from the leaves collected in September 2018 contained (E,E)-α-farnesene (26.65%), (E)-caryophyllene (15.7%), and germacrene D (7.72%), while the EO from the leaves collected in February 2019 was primarily characterized by (E,E)-α-farnesene (37.43%), (E)-caryophyllene (21.4%), and α-pinene (16.91%). Among these EOs, sample B collected in February 2019 demonstrated the highest potential for inhibiting free radicals, with an inhibition rate of 34.74%. Conversely, the EOs from specimen A exhibited the highest toxic potentials, with an lethal concentration 50 (LC50) value of 57.62 ± 1.53 µg/mL, while specimen B had an LC50 value of 74.72 ± 2.86 µg/mL. Molecular docking results suggested that hydrophobic interactions significantly contributed to the binding of the major compounds in the EO from sample B to the binding pocket of AChE. Full article

The effects of normal (NA) and controlled atmosphere (CA) storage and postharvest treatment with 1-methylcyclopropene (1-MCP) before CA storage for 5 months on the volatilome, biochemical composition and quality of ‘Golden Delicious’ (GD) and ‘Red Delicious’ (RD) apples were studied. Apples stored under NA and CA maintained and 1-MCP treatment increased firmness in both cultivars. NA storage resulted in a decrease of glucose, sucrose and fructose levels in both cultivars. When compared to CA storage, 1-MCP treatment caused a more significant decrease in sucrose levels and an increase in glucose levels. Additionally, 1-MCP-treated apples exhibited a significant decrease in malic acid content for both cultivars. All storage conditions led to significant changes in the abundance and composition of the volatilome in both cultivars. GD and RD apples responded differently to 1-MCP treatment compared to CA storage; higher abundance of hexanoate esters and (E,E)-α-farnesene was observed in RD apples treated with 1-MCP. While 1-MCP was effective in reducing (E,E)-α-farnesene abundance in GD apples, its impact on RD apples was more limited. However, for both cultivars, all storage conditions resulted in lower levels of 2-methylbutyl acetate, butyl acetate and hexyl acetate. The effectiveness of 1-MCP is cultivar dependent, with GD showing better results than RD. Full article

Chamomile has become one of the world’s most popular herbal teas due to its unique properties. Chamomile is widely used in dietary supplements, cosmetics, and herbal products. This study aimed to investigate the volatile aromatic components in chamomile. Two analytical techniques, gas chromatography–mass spectrometry (GC-MS) and an ultra-fast gas chromatography electronic nose, were employed to examine samples from Xinjiang (XJ), Shandong (SD), and Hebei (HB) in China, and imported samples from Germany (GER). The results revealed that all chamomile samples contained specific sesquiterpene compounds, including α-bisabolol, bisabolol oxide, bisabolone oxide, and chamazulene. Additionally, forty potential aroma components were identified by the electronic nose. The primary odor components of chamomile were characterized by fruity and spicy notes. The primary differences in the components of chamomile oil were identified as (E)-β-farnesene, chamazulene, α-bisabolol oxide B, spathulenol and α-bisabolone oxide A. Significant differences in aroma compounds included geosmin, butanoic acid, 2-butene, norfuraneol, γ-terpinene. This study demonstrates that GC–MS and the ultra-fast gas chromatography electronic nose can preliminarily distinguish chamomile from different areas, providing a method and guidance for the selection of origin and sensory evaluation of chamomile. The current study is limited by the sample size and it provides preliminary conclusions. Future studies with a larger sample size are warranted to further improve these findings. Full article
