Background/Objectives: Urban green space has been increasingly recognized as a determinant of maternal and child health. This study investigated the association between prenatal exposure to different types of green space and the risk of congenital anomalies in South Korea. Methods: We analyzed data from the National Health Insurance Service (N = 142,422). Green space exposure was measured at the area level and categorized into grassland and forest; statistical analysis was performed using generalized estimating equations and generalized additive models to analyze the associations. Additionally, subgroup and sensitivity analyses were performed. Results: GEE analysis showed that a 10% increase in the proportion of grassland in a residential district was associated with a reduced risk of nervous system (adjusted odds ratio [aOR]: 0.77, 95% confidence interval [CI]: 0.63–0.94) and genitourinary system anomalies (aOR: 0.83, 95% CI: 0.71–0.97). The subgroup analysis results showed significance only for male infants, but the difference between the sexes was not significant. In the quartile-based analysis, we found a slightly significant p-value for trend for the effect of forests on digestive system anomalies, but the trend was toward increasing risk. In a sensitivity analysis with different exposure classifications, the overall and nervous system anomalies in built green space showed that the risk decreased as green space increased compared to that in the lowest quartile. Conclusions: Our results highlight the importance of spatial environmental factors during pregnancy and suggest that different types of green spaces differentially impact the offspring’s early health outcomes. This study suggests the need for built environment planning as part of preventive maternal and child health strategies. Full article

Grid-forming (GFM) converters have been critical in DER-dominant power systems, ensuring stability, but their performance is highly sensitive to grid conditions such as system strength. Testing GFM converters under a wide range of grid strengths (from strong high-inertia systems to very weak grids) and fault scenarios is challenging, as traditional test facilities and static grid simulators have limitations. To address this problem, this paper proposes a converter-based power line emulator that provides a flexible, programmable grid environment for GFM converter testing. The emulator uses power electronic converters to mimic transmission line characteristics, allowing for the adjustment of effective grid strength (e.g., short-circuit ratio changes). The proposed approach is validated through detailed PSCAD simulations, demonstrating its ability to provide scalable weak-grid emulation and comprehensive validation of GFM converter control strategies and stability under various grid conditions. This research highlights that the converter-based emulator offers enhanced flexibility and cost-effectiveness over traditional testing setups, making it an effective tool for GFM converter performance test. Background/Objectives: C24 ceramide plays a crucial role in skin regeneration and wound healing; however, its hydrophobic nature limits its application in therapeutic formulations. This study aims to enhance the bioavailability and efficacy of C24 ceramide by developing ceramide-based lipid nanoparticles (C24-LNP) and evaluate their impact on skin regeneration and wound healing. Methods: C24-LNP was synthesized and characterized for aqueous stability and bioavailability. In vitro experiments were conducted to assess its effects on keratinocyte proliferation and migration. Molecular biological analysis examined key signaling pathways, including AKT and ERK1/2 phosphorylation. Additionally, an in vivo mouse wound model was utilized to evaluate wound healing efficacy, with histological analysis performed to assess epidermal and dermal regeneration. Results: C24-LNP exhibited improved aqueous stability and bioavailability compared to free C24 ceramide. In vitro studies demonstrated that C24-LNP significantly promoted keratinocyte proliferation and migration. Molecular analysis revealed activation of the AKT and ERK1/2 signaling pathways, which are critical for cell growth and skin regeneration. In vivo wound healing experiments showed that C24-LNP accelerated wound closure compared to the control group. Histological analysis confirmed enhanced epidermal and dermal regeneration, leading to improved structural and functional skin repair. Conclusion: The lipid nanoparticle formulation of C24 ceramide effectively increases its bioavailability and enhances its therapeutic efficacy in skin regeneration and wound healing. C24-LNP presents a scalable and cost-effective alternative to traditional growth factor-based therapies, offering significant potential for clinical applications in wound care and dermatological treatments. Ozone concentrations have increased in recent decades, and several studies have reported that long-term exposure to ozone increases the mortality risk induced by respiratory conditions. However, research on cause-specific mortality related to ozone exposure and respiratory diseases remains scarce. We constructed a retrospective cohort of 5,360,032 adults aged ≥ 65 years from the National Health Insurance Service of Republic of Korea, and death certificates were obtained from Statistics Republic of Korea to determine the cause of death between 2010 and 2019. The daily maximum 8 h average levels of ozone during the warm season annually (May–September) and other air pollutants were determined for the residential district. We analyzed the data using a time-varying Cox proportional hazards model with individual- and district-level covariates, incorporating a competing risk framework to address deaths from causes other than chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) and asthma. In our single-pollutant model with a 3-year moving average, a 1 ppb increase in ozone exposure was associated with a hazard ratio (HR) of 1.011 (95% confidence interval [CI]: 1.008–1.013) for COPD mortality and an HR of 1.016 (95% CI: 1.011–1.022) for asthma mortality. In our model adjusted for the presence of underlying diseases and district-level variables, the HRs were 1.009 (95% CI: 1.008–1.014) for COPD and 1.017 (95% CI: 1.011–1.023) for asthma, respectively. These associations remained robust in our two-pollutant model, except for NO2 and COPD. A linear concentration–response relationship was identified between ozone concentration, COPD, and asthma mortality. In this large nationwide cohort study, long-term exposure to ozone was associated with an increased risk of death from COPD and asthma in older Korean adults. Full article

This study investigated the tolerance of resting eggs of Eurytemora pacifica to storage under low temperatures, which is of particular interest in light of the recent use of nauplii as living food in aquaculture, other than conditions experienced also in the wild during winter cold events in the Northern Hemisphere. Sediment samples collected in August 2020 were used to store the resting eggs at two different freezing temperatures (−5 and −20 °C) for five different durations (1, 3, 6, 9, and 12 months). The mean hatching success rates of the resting eggs after one month of storage were 85.3 ± 1.5% (−5 °C) and 85.0 ± 3.6% (−20 °C), with no significant difference between freezing temperatures. However, significant differences emerged over time, with the mean hatching success rate remaining at 85.0 ± 3.6% at −5 °C after three months, while it dropped sharply to 1.7 ± 2.1% at −20 °C. For the non-freezing conditions, the hatching success at 10 °C increased gradually over the one-month incubation period, ultimately reaching 71.0%. These findings demonstrate the remarkable cold tolerance of E. pacifica but also indicate a limit to this tolerance at longer durations. These results underscore the importance of considering the adoption of storage freezing for resting eggs to be used for aquaculture and also suggest the possibility of the species better surviving the extreme weather events in comparison with other species. Gait analysis plays important roles in various applications such as exercise therapy, biometrics, and robot control. It can also be used to prevent and improve movement disorders and monitor health conditions. We implemented a wearable module equipped with an MPU-9250 IMU sensor, and Bluetooth modules were implemented on an Arduino Uno R3 board for gait analysis. Gait cycles were identified based on roll values measured by the accelerometer embedded in the IMU sensor. By superimposing the gait cycles that occurred during the walking period, they could be analyzed using statistical methods. We found that the subjects could be identified using the gait feature points extracted through the statistical modeling process. To validate the feasibility of feature-based gait pattern identification, we constructed various machine learning models and compared the accuracy of their gait pattern identification. Based on this, we also investigated whether there was a significant difference between the gait patterns of people who used cell phones while walking and those who did not. Full article

Although adverse events of proton pump inhibitors (PPIs) have been reported, there are few studies on physicians’ perceptions. We aimed to investigate physicians’ awareness of PPI-related adverse events and changes in treatment patterns according to their practice. We conducted an online survey of physicians using a 15-item questionnaire. The survey queried respondents’ demographic information, PPI prescription patterns, perceptions, and concerns on the reported PPI-related adverse events. Concerns regarding the adverse events of PPI were assessed by dividing them into possibilities and medical causality. Of the 450 respondents, 430 were specialists, and 232 were gastroenterologists. A total of 87.8% of the respondents were generally or well aware of the adverse effects of PPI, 29.1% considered side effects when prescribing PPI, and 14.6% explained them to patients. Specialists were more aware of the side effects of PPI than general practitioners (p = 0.005), and gastroenterologists were more aware of the side effects of PPI than non-gastroenterologists (p < 0.001). However, gastroenterologists explained less to patients (p = 0.001) and preferred to reduce the dose of PPI rather than discontinue it. The adverse events that were recognized as having the highest probability of occurrence and strongest association with PPI use were bone diseases, Clostridium difficile infection, gastrointestinal infection, pneumonia, and interactions with anti-thrombotic drugs. Physicians’ awareness of PPI-related adverse events and treatment patterns differed significantly according to their positions and practice. Although a number of adverse events of PPIs were reported, physicians seem to accept their significance differently according to their specialty and practice patterns. Full article

This study aimed to conduct importance-performance analyses (IPAs) based on Korean middle school students’ health management awareness during the post-coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) era. Data were collected from 867 Korean middle school students (13–15 years old) via online and offline surveys between May and June 2023. Frequency analysis, reliability analysis, IPA based on the entire student group, and IPA depending on sex were carried out with the collected data, which revealed the following. First, regardless of sex, the IPA results indicated that four factors of mental health were located in the third quadrant, with one factor of the same variable in the fourth quadrant. The three factors of disease management were located in the third quadrant. Regarding physical activity, two factors were located in the first quadrant, one in the second quadrant, and one in the third quadrant. Regarding sleep management, two factors were located in the second quadrant, one in the third quadrant, and one in the first quadrant. Regarding eating management, two factors were located in the third quadrant and one in the fourth quadrant. Regarding the social distancing variable, all four factors were located in the third quadrant. Regarding hygiene management, two factors were located in the first quadrant, one in the third quadrant, and one in the fourth quadrant. Furthermore, the IPA results indicated sex differences in regular sports and vigorous movement activities associated with physical activity. Additionally, a sex difference was observed in regular diet associated with eating management. This study proposed possible measures for encouraging middle school students to recognize the importance of health and increase their health-related performance during the COVID-19 endemic phase. Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), a common gastrointestinal disorder worldwide, is characterized by chronic abdominal pain, bloating, and disordered defecation. IBS is associated with several factors, including visceral hypersensitivity, gut motility, and gut–brain interaction disorders. Because currently available pharmacological treatments cannot adequately improve symptoms and may cause adverse effects, the use of herbal therapies for managing IBS is increasing. Lysimachia vulgaris var. davurica (LV) is a medicinal plant used in traditional medicine to treat diarrhea. However, information on whether LV can effectively improve diarrhea-predominant IBS (IBS-D) remains limited. In this study, using an experimental mouse model of IBS-D, we elucidated the effects of the LV extract. The methanol extract of LV decreased fecal pellet output in the restraint stress- or 5-hydroxytryptamine (5-HT)-induced IBS mouse model and inhibited 5-HT-mediated [Ca2+]i increase in a dose-dependent manner. Furthermore, we developed and validated a high-performance liquid chromatography method using two marker compounds, namely, chlorogenic acid and rutin, for quality control analysis. Our study results suggest the feasibility of the methanol extract of LV for developing therapeutic agents to treat IBS-D by acting as a 5-HT3 receptor antagonist. Full article

Intratumor heterogeneity leads to different responses to targeted therapies, even within patients whose tumors harbor identical driver oncogenes. This study examined clinical outcomes according to a patient-derived cell (PDC)-based drug sensitivity test in lung cancer patients treated with targeted therapies. From 487 lung cancers, 397 PDCs were established with a success rate of 82%. In 139 PDCs from advanced non-small-cell lung cancer (NSCLC) patients receiving targeted therapies, the standardized area under the curve (AUC) values for the drugs was significantly correlated with their tumor response (p = 0.002). Among 59 chemo-naive EGFR/ALK-positive NSCLC patients, the PDC non-responders showed a significantly inferior response rate (RR) and progression-free survival (PFS) for the targeted drugs than the PDC responders (RR, 25% vs. 78%, p = 0.011; median PFS, 3.4 months [95% confidence interval (CI), 2.8–4.1] vs. 11.8 months [95% CI, 6.5–17.0], p < 0.001). Of 25 EGFR-positive NSCLC patients re-challenged with EGFR inhibitors, the PDC responder showed a higher RR than the PDC non-responder (42% vs. 15%). Four patients with wild-type EGFR or uncommon EGFR-mutant NSCLC were treated with EGFR inhibitors based on their favorable PDC response to EGFR inhibitors, and two patients showed dramatic responses. Therefore, the PDC-based drug sensitivity test results were significantly associated with clinical outcomes in patients with EGFR- or ALK-positive NSCLC. It may be helpful for predicting individual heterogenous clinical outcomes beyond genomic alterations. Full article

In this paper, we present a method of gait analysis on a treadmill based on pressure distribution. We aimed to model the gait patterns of a subject walking at a constant speed on a treadmill based on differences in current consumption. The changes in current consumption were converted into pressure distribution curves, and then specific features were extracted. The extracted features were used to model the walking pattern on a treadmill. To verify the validity of our proposed feature-based gait pattern modeling, we conducted experiments by gender, age, BMI (body mass index), and step-to-step symmetry. The experimental results showed that the heavier the subject, the higher the value of each feature. In particular, our feature point-based gait modeling provides an index that can help determine whether a subject’s gait is abnormal, depending on the difference between the features. Full article

Chronic pain is an unpleasant experience associated with actual or potential tissue damage. Inflammatory pain alerts the body to inflammation and promotes healing; however, unresolved inflammation can lead to chronic pain. Conversely, neuropathic pain, due to somatosensory damage, can be a disease in itself. However, inflammation plays a considerable role in the progression of both types of pain. Resolvins, derived from omega-3 fatty acids, actively suppress pro-inflammatory mediators and aid in the resolution of inflammation. Resolvins alleviate various inflammatory and neuropathic pain models by reducing hypersensitivity and regulating inflammatory cytokines and glial activation in the spinal cord and dorsal root ganglia. Thus, resolvins are a promising alternative for pain management with the potential to reduce the side effects associated with conventional medications. Continued research is crucial to unlock the therapeutic potential of resolvins and integrate them into effective clinical pain management strategies. (1) Background: Breast core needle biopsy (CNB) is preferred over fine needle aspiration (FNA) as it has higher sensitivity and specificity and enables immunohistochemical evaluation. However, breast FNA remains widely used because of its low cost, minimally invasive nature, and quick results. Studies analyzing the effects of each test on the prognoses of patients with breast cancer are scarce and controversial, and the criteria for test selection remain unknown. (2) Methods: This study included adult female patients who underwent breast cancer surgery at 102 general hospitals. The trend of breast biopsies over time was analyzed, and the prognoses of patients with breast cancer who underwent CNB and FNA were compared. (3) Results: This study included 73,644 patients who underwent FNA (n = 8027) and CNB (n = 65,617). A multivariate Cox regression analysis showed that patients diagnosed using FNA had significantly worse overall survival (OS) and breast-cancer-specific survival (BCSS) than those diagnosed using CNB. In the subgroup analysis, patients with breast imaging reporting and data system (BI-RADS) 5 lesions, palpable tumors, or centrally located tumors had significantly worse OS and BCSS with FNA than with CNB. Nivolumab after Induction Chemotherapy in Previously Treated Non-Small-Cell Lung Cancer Patients with Low PD-L1 Expression

This study aimed to investigate whether cyclophosphamide (C) and adriamycin (A) induction therapy (IT) prior to nivolumab could enhance the efficacy of nivolumab in previously treated patients with non-squamous (NSQ) non-small-cell lung cancer (NSCLC) with less than 10% programmed death-ligand 1 (PD-L1) expression. Twenty-two enrolled patients received four cycles of CA-IT every 3 weeks. Nivolumab was given 360 mg every 3 weeks from the second cycle and 480 mg every 4 weeks after four cycles of CA-IT. The median progression-free survival (PFS) and overall survival (OS) were 2.4 months and 11.6 months, respectively. Fluorescence-activated cell sorting revealed the lowest ratio of myeloid-derived suppressor cells (MDSCs) to CD8+T-cells in the responders. Proteomic analysis identified a consistent upregulation of extracellular matrix-receptor interactions and phagosome pathways in the responders. Among the differentially expressed proteins, the transferrin receptor protein (TFRC) was higher in the responders before treatment (fold change > 1.2). TFRC validation with an independent cohort showed the prognostic significance of either OS or PFS in patients with low PD-L1 expression. In summary, CA-IT did not improve nivolumab efficacy in NSQ-NSCLCs with low PD-L1 expression; however, it induced decreasing MDSC, resulting in a durable response. Higher baseline TFRC levels predicted a favorable response to nivolumab in NSCLC with low PD-L1 expression. Full article

The incidence of ulcerative colitis (UC), an inflammatory disorder of the gastrointestinal tract, has rapidly increased in Asian countries over several decades. To overcome the limitations of conventional drug therapies, including biologics for UC management, the development of herbal medicine-derived products has received continuous attention. In this study, we evaluated the beneficial effects of a hydroethanolic extract of Fritillariae thunbergii Bulbus (FTB) in a mouse model of DSS-induced UC. The DSS treatment successfully induced severe colonic inflammation and ulceration. However, the severity of colitis was reduced by the oral administration of FTB. Histopathological examination showed that FTB alleviated the infiltration of inflammatory cells (e.g., neutrophils and macrophages), damage to epithelial and goblet cells in the colonic mucosal layer, and fibrotic lesions. Additionally, FTB markedly reduced the gene expression of proinflammatory cytokines and extracellular matrix remodeling. Immunohistochemical analysis showed that FTB alleviated the decrease in occludin and zonula occludens-1 expression induced by DSS. In a Caco-2 monolayer system, FTB treatment improved intestinal barrier permeability in a dose-dependent manner and increased tight junction expression. Overall, FTB has potential as a therapeutic agent through the improvement of tissue damage and inflammation severity through the modulation of intestinal barrier integrity. Full article
