Topical Collection Information

Dear Colleagues,

The Bromoviridae are a family of viruses of significant research and agricultural importance. They are positive‑sense, single‑stranded RNA plant viruses characterised by a tripartite genome, with RNA1 and RNA2 encoding replication functions and RNA3 encoding movement and coat proteins. Members of the family (genera Alfamovirus, Anulavirus, Bromovirus, Cucumovirus, Ilarvirus, and Oleavirus) produce icosahedral or bacilliform virions that encapsidate a single RNA molecule. They are transmitted by insects in a non-persistent manner as well as mechanically. Efficient seed or pollen transmission has been demonstrated for some genera. They typically infect a wide range of crops and ornamentals, causing mosaic, stunting, and deformation symptoms.

In research, bromovirids remain a leading model system for studying 1) how segmented RNA genomes coordinate replication, 2) how viruses move and colonise their host, and 3) RNA silencing suppression and viral pathogenicity factors. Their properties are also being harnessed for biotechnological applications in the areas of nanoparticle engineering and virus-induced gene silencing.

Manuscripts focusing on any of the topics below regarding the genus are invited for this edition:

  • Replication
  • Cell-to-cell and systemic movement
  • Evolution
  • Emerging species
  • RNA structure
  • Virion architecture
  • Epidemiology
  • Novel diagnostics
  • Host–virus interactions
  • Biotechnological applications
  • Transmission
  • Disease management
  • Virus resistance

Manuscript Submission Information

Manuscripts should be submitted online at www.mdpi.com by registering and logging in to this website. Once you are registered, click here to go to the submission form. All submissions that pass pre-check are peer-reviewed. Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the collection website. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 250 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for assessment.

Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-anonymized peer-review process. A guide for authors and other relevant information for submission of manuscripts is available on the Instructions for Authors page. Viruses is an international peer-reviewed open access monthly journal published by MDPI.

Please visit the Instructions for Authors page before submitting a manuscript. The Article Processing Charge (APC) for publication in this open access journal is 2600 CHF (Swiss Francs). Submitted papers should be well formatted and use good English. Authors may use MDPI's English editing service prior to publication or during author revisions.
