Dear Colleagues,
We are pleased to invite you to contribute to a Special Issue of Urban Science entitled “Investigating Urban Safety Science, Technology and System Resilience”. In the context of accelerating global climate change and historically unprecedented urbanization, cities have become concentrated hubs of population, wealth, infrastructure, and socioeconomic activities. This convergence substantially amplifies the potential impacts of major disasters—whether natural or human-induced—when they occur in urban environments. The increasing frequency and intensity of extreme events underscore an urgent need to advance research on urban safety and resilience.
This Special Issue seeks to address critical challenges related to urban safety under the intertwined pressures of climate change, human activity, and large-scale urbanization. By fostering interdisciplinary insights, the collection aims to provide scientific and technological support for informed urban planning, enhanced disaster preparedness, and the development of more resilient cities.
The Issue explores urban safety and resilience through the analytical framework of “hazard sources–exposed elements–response capacity.” It addresses fundamental questions concerning the mechanisms of disaster formation and their destructive characteristics in urban settings; the vulnerability and feedback mechanisms of urban systems under diverse emergency scenarios; and the institutional, legal, and managerial frameworks governing emergency response to catastrophic events. By integrating perspectives from risk science, engineering, data science, and social governance, the Issue aims to contribute to a holistic understanding of urban system resilience. The theme aligns closely with the scope of Urban Science, which publishes interdisciplinary research on urban systems, sustainability, and planning, ensuring both relevance and scholarly rigor.
Original research articles and review papers are welcome. Research topics include, but are not limited to, the following:
- Urban safety theory and methodology;
- Urban risk monitoring and early warning systems;
- Emergency management for urban safety and resilience;
- Safety and resilience of urban infrastructure and lifeline systems;
- Big data and digital intelligence for resilient urban management;
- Climate change and urban systemic safety;
- Social safety governance and community resilience.

Manuscript Submission Information
Manuscripts should be submitted online at www.mdpi.com by registering and logging in to this website. Once you are registered, click here to go to the submission form. Manuscripts can be submitted until the deadline. All submissions that pass pre-check are peer-reviewed. Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the special issue website. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 250 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for assessment.
Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-anonymized peer-review process. Urban Science is an international peer-reviewed open access monthly journal published by MDPI.
