Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

In the past few decades, cities have experienced explosive growth in both natural size and population, which is posing serious challenges regarding the ecological and environmental function of cities. Rapid urbanization has caused massive undesirable social-economic and eco-environmental problems, such as environmental pollution, urban heat island, energy shortage, population migration, social welfare and so on. Therefore, the world needs scientific knowledge to reduce these risks and meet the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) under the context of global climate change.Urban remote sensing has been evolving consistently over the last fifty years. Key contributions of urban remote sensing include, but are not limited to, the characterization of urban areas, urban land cover changes, human activities and thermal remote sensing of urban climates. Compared with field survey data, remote sensing images provide continual improved spatial resolution that can be applied to numerous natural and anthropogenic issues in urban areas across different spatial-temporal scales worldwide. In addition, emerging image-processing methods and approaches like big data, deep learning, and cloud computing will also advance the applications of remote sensing data. Remote sensing plays a significant role in understanding the urban environment and providing practical wisdom for urban sustainable development.

The potential topics in this Special Issue include but are not limited to the following:
- New methods for quantifying urbanization;
- Relationships between urban development and climate change;
- Mapping and monitoring urban social-economic, ecological and environmental problems (e.g., nighttime lights, urban heat island, urban pollution, urban flood, urban associated disaster);
- Mechanisms of urban landscape change;
- Cooling effect of urban green and blue spaces;
- New approaches for fusing different resolution data;
- Integrated urban-rural development;
- UAV applications in urban area;
- Modeling and predicting urban development.

Manuscript Submission Information

Manuscripts should be submitted online at www.mdpi.com by registering and logging in to this website. Once you are registered, click here to go to the submission form. Manuscripts can be submitted until the deadline. All submissions that pass pre-check are peer-reviewed. Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the special issue website. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 100 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for announcement on this website.

Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-blind peer-review process. A guide for authors and other relevant information for submission of manuscripts is available on the Instructions for Authors page. Urban Science is an international peer-reviewed open access quarterly journal published by MDPI.

Please visit the Instructions for Authors page before submitting a manuscript. The Article Processing Charge (APC) for publication in this open access journal is 1600 CHF (Swiss Francs). Submitted papers should be well formatted and use good English. Authors may use MDPI's English editing service prior to publication or during author revisions.

Benefits of Publishing in a Special Issue

  • Ease of navigation: Grouping papers by topic helps scholars navigate broad scope journals more efficiently.
  • Greater discoverability: Special Issues support the reach and impact of scientific research. Articles in Special Issues are more discoverable and cited more frequently.
  • Expansion of research network: Special Issues facilitate connections among authors, fostering scientific collaborations.
  • External promotion: Articles in Special Issues are often promoted through the journal's social media, increasing their visibility.
  • e-Book format: Special Issues with more than 10 articles can be published as dedicated e-books, ensuring wide and rapid dissemination.
