Special Issue Information
Dear Colleagues,
Urbanization is reshaping socio-environmental systems, affecting sustainability, climate resilience, and human well-being, and rapid urbanization alters land use, increases emissions, and heightens climate risks. Rural areas are also transforming due to urban influence, which impacts ecosystems, agriculture, and economies. Fortunately, geospatial technologies, remote sensing, and climate modeling provide critical tools to analyze urbanization and climate impacts. However, integrated frameworks that bridge disciplines are essential for guiding sustainable urbanization policies and mitigating climate risks. Therefore, a comprehensive understanding of the interactions between urbanization, climate change, and socio-environmental systems is crucial for promoting sustainable development and resilience in both urban and rural areas.
The goal of this Special Issue is to gather together papers (original research articles and review papers) that provide insights into the innovative frameworks, methodologies, and empirical analyses that are used to assess urban sustainability within the context of climate change. The Special Issue aims to foster interdisciplinary perspectives by integrating geography, remote sensing, climate science, and urban planning to evaluate the environmental, social, and economic dimensions of urbanization sustainability. Our objective is to offer valuable insights and practical solutions to policymakers, urban planners, and environmental scientists, promoting urban and rural sustainable development in a changing climate.
This Special Issue will welcome manuscripts that link the following themes:
- Frameworks for urban and rural sustainability assessment;
- Interactions between urbanization and climate change;
- Land use/land cover changes;
- Urban–rural transitions;
- Urban expansion and environmental effects;
- Urban heat island and mitigation strategies;
- Green infrastructure and nature-based solutions (NBSs);
- Environmental pollution and urban sustainability;
- Cropland changes and agricultural sustainability;
- Crop productivity and food security;
- Sustainable land management and ecosystem services;
- Climate change adaptation strategies for urban and rural areas.
We look forward to receiving your original research articles and reviews.

Manuscript Submission Information
Manuscripts should be submitted online at www.mdpi.com by registering and logging in to this website. Once you are registered, click here to go to the submission form. Manuscripts can be submitted until the deadline. All submissions that pass pre-check are peer-reviewed. Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the special issue website. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 100 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for announcement on this website.
Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-blind peer-review process. A guide for authors and other relevant information for submission of manuscripts is available on the Instructions for Authors page. Land is an international peer-reviewed open access monthly journal published by MDPI.
Please visit the Instructions for Authors page before submitting a manuscript. The Article Processing Charge (APC) for publication in this open access journal is 2600 CHF (Swiss Francs). Submitted papers should be well formatted and use good English. Authors may use MDPI's English editing service prior to publication or during author revisions.
